When it comes to a few of my favourite things, I think I’ve quite possibly hit the jackpot this issue. The Isles of Scilly is my dream Cornish destination. It’s Caribbean-esque turquoise waters and white sand beaches transport you a world away, yet they are just 28 miles from Cornwall’s mainland. There is a pace of life in Scilly like no other; shoulders drop and cares disperse as soon as you step off the Scillonian or the Airbus. When I visited as a child, holidays were full of simple pleasures and today these are only made better by the plethora of food and drink producers on Scilly. Ahead of the Taste of Scilly festival held in September, I’ve been finding out more about the island’s victuals (from page 25).

We can then bring the bed back to its single form when we need to attend to the patient’s care. One of my fondest memories is of looking through the doorway of a patient’s room and seeing them with their partner and child on the bed all laughing and joking together.”

Sunset stays through September and autumn A truly unique claim that can be made by the Land’s End Hotel is that it possesses an uninterrupted view across the water to the setting sun in the west, 23 minutes after it is already dark in the capital! Sitting proudly a top of a granite promontory you can gaze out from your bedroom window and take in the breath-taking view of the Atlantic Ocean, as it reflects the ochre-stained evening heralding a farewell to another day. Watch as the famous Longships Lighthouse becomes silhouetted against a blaze of orange and, on a clear evening, witness as that ripple of land that sits on the horizon retreats into the darkness as the Isles of Scilly settle down for the night. And then, in the morning, after a hearty breakfast prepare to step out and experience a meander along the coastal path – either toward Nanjizal to the south-east or Sennen Cove to the north-east. Breath in the chill, clean air and become invigorated by a feeling of being at the edge of the world. Watch the gannets spectacularly dive upon their pray out to sea and hear the resonating cry of the gulls as they swoop and then hang upon the updraft from the 200-foot sheer cliff. After you’ve had your fill, return to the luxury and warmth of your hotel bedroom that reflects its Victorian heritage but with a big nod to contemporary twists and modern whims. All in all, it’s a place to head to this forthcoming season. For more information call 01736 871844 or visit www.landsendhotel.co.uk

Importing from Burgundy with Wadebridge Wines Devastating frosts in April were just the start for the vineyards of burgundy in 2021. Snow and a cool, wet summer followed to only worsen the situation. Fortunately, Burgundian winemakers have seen their fair share of challenging vintages throughout the ages, and didn’t lose faith. Though some lost up to 80% of their crop, by late September the sun eventually shone and gave the grapes the final ripening they needed before harvest. Several months later, the shipment arrives at Wadebridge Wines directly from their favourite estates with a fantastic selection for you to try; whether you’re just discovering one of the oldest winemaking regions in the world, or you’re a traditionalist who won’t drink anything else. Oils and acrylics feature everything you will see in the landscape of north Cornwall –sunshine on the beaches, the energy of the ocean, the weather ravaging the moors. Among these works of art, you’ll find beautiful, delicate ceramics, an excellent selection of silver jewellery, wooden and glass pieces and cards for all occasions, with recycled and natural materials featuring in the three-dimensional pieces. Authentic Cornish dining at Brasserie on the Bay Surrounded by Falmouth’s burgeoning food scene, local boy and Executive Head Chef Darren Millgate is making waves and taking diners on a laid-back tour of Cornish fields, farms and waters at the picturesque Brasserie on the Bay. Having trained under Michelinstarred Ben Tunnicliffe and learning his trade in the south of France, Darren is back on home turf with a food philosophy centred on honest, Cornish produce.

“One of my earliest memories was going out with my dad on our boat at Portholland to pull up the net and see what was in store for dinner. The excitement of not knowing what would be in the net still guides me today. It’s far more important than the flamboyance and waste of a fine-dining operation.”

On a regular trip to Newlyn Fish Market, Darren runs his eye over an array of hake, rays, brill, turbot and red mullet while Cornish Fish Direct co-owner Anthony talks him through his latest hauls. He points

Darren in the direction of his prized, fresh catches - farmed sea bass, smoked salmon and weaver fish, all of which Darren orders on the spot and ideas immediately spark on plating the dish and bringing it to the table at St DarrenMichaels.spends the afternoon in the fields of local organic vegetable suppliers WestCountry, getting first-hand experience of their ‘no dig, no fertilizer’ production Themethods.relaxed Brasserie on the Bay looks out across the shimmering seas and white sands of Gyllyngvase Beach and is open all year round. Flowers rather than food were one of the main industries on the islands during that time, but the growth of overseas production resulted in a decline in the industry.

My first experience of Scilly was a holiday on St Mary’s as a young girl some 40 years ago. The nearest we got to a foodie feast back then was a bag of chips and an ice-cream sat overlooking Pelistry Bay. Subsequent years saw us spend two idyllic weeks every year on St Martin’s. This was a time of simple pleasures, where the absence of mains electricity meant that the hum of the generators played the soundtrack to our evenings. Each morning we collected our milk in churns from Carron Farm and a stroll to the pub for a rum and shrub at the Seven Stones was much loved.

Rearing their own Red Devon beef cattle, alongside chickens and bees, as well as growing fruit and vegetables, the farm offers a diverse habitat that is managed specifically to sustain wildlife.

Veronica Farm Fudge As with many of the producers on Scilly, small-scale production often begins with kitchen table R&D. This was the case for the Taylor family, whose Bryher-based fudge making ( veronicafarmfudge.co.uk ) began over 20 years ago on their AGA, using traditional methods and local milk from Troytown Farm on St Agnes. Moving to Bryher from the mainland in the 70s, owners Kris and Geoff were in the business of flowers rather than fudge, but when the narcissus market dwindled due to European competition they needed to diversify. Their entrepreneurial daughter Issy had been making fudge to fund dance lessons, and when she left for university, they took over the production of these sweet treats, scaling the business and rescuing the farm’s future. & RIGHT  Scilly

Lockdown, as with many companies, saw them hit rock bottom as income from their holiday lets and honesty stall disappeared overnight. A glut of chillies saw owners Ruth and Graham buy a dehydrator in a bid to find a product that would save the farm. Light to post, the resulting scarlet gems caused a stir on both the mainland and the farm stall and so Scilly Chilli (scillychilli.co.uk) was born.

DIDEXPERIENCEYOUKNOW? Fantastic feasts and where to find them… This year’s Taste of Scilly festival runs from the 15th25th September. Chef Simon Stallard, whose renowned clifftop café The Hidden Hut and recently opened pub The Standard, both on the Roseland, will be travelling to the islands using local produce to cook up some very special feasts in September. The events take place on the 23rd on Tresco, the 24th on St. Martin’s and the 23rd on St. Mary’s. Visit www.visitislesofscilly.com for more details.

Such is the plethora of producers and growers on the islands now, they even boast their own festival, The Taste of Scilly which takes place in September each year. We take a tasting tour of just a few who are leading way.

Westward Farm Neighbouring St Agnes farm (westwardfarm. co.uk) has been producing soap and toiletries for many years, growing plants on the farm which are then harvested and distilled to produce the quality essential oils that provide the enticing fragrance of their soap, shower gel and hand wash. Using their experience of extracting the very best qualities from different botanicals, thoughts turned to gin! Aiden Hicks, the seventh-generation custodian of Westward Farm, wanted to create an honest gin using as many seasonal botanicals from the farm as possible. Other ingredients don’t travel far, including honey from Tresco, used to create an exclusive Tresco Abbey Garden gin. Tresco Honey

Another farm to have lost their flower crop, the Hicks family knew they had to turn their attentions to production of a different kind to supplement the milk sales. Clotted cream came first, followed by a luxurious smallbatch ice cream that is now available in over 30 flavours.

Scillonian Bee Project in 2021 to protect the 11 hives they have on the island and to save the island’s native dark honey bee, is the custodian of the island’s bee population. With hives on Bryher, St Martin’s and St Agnes, each jar of island honey has its own unique taste due to its local conditions and is used to flavour other island produce such as fudge, ice-cream, gin and rum.

The Island Bakery Barney McLachlan is an early riser on St Martin’s as the island’s daily batch of organic breads and rolls is baked. Starting at 4am, the first task of the day is to decide how much to bake based on visitor predictions, which can be up to a staggering 600 a day If the weather is good and there’s a double landing of trip boats to the island. As well as daily bread favourites, including a reduced-sized camper’s loaf specially produced for St Martin’s campsite guests, Barney and his team also bake sweet pastries as well as a ubiquitous Cornish pasty (baked to a special island recipe of course!) that is always a sell-out.

The bees who make the hives in the Abbey Garden (tresco.co.uk) their home have a very unique foraging landscape. Based at Carron farm, each of SC Dogs vodka and rum (named for a combination of the island’s fishing boat prefix SC as well as Andrew’s and Scilly’s seafaring past) is dedicated to a venerable island ‘sea dog’. Troytown Farm With its campsite that sits at the very edge of the island, Troytown Farm (troytown.co.uk), as with many businesses on Scilly, has more than one string to its bow. It’s the only dairy farm on the islands with just 11 milking Jersey and Ayrshire cows. A daily milk round on St Agnes has expanded with Troytown milk now being exported to the other islands.

This unique coastal vineyard covers an area of just over a hectare of south-facing slopes with predominantly granite soils. Once a flower farm, whose bulbs still make a surprise appearance now and again with daffodils and lily of the valley flowering amongst the vines, its natural evergreen pittosporum windbreaks now protecting the vines rather than the bulbs. Grown just a few yards from where they are pressed, the vines have minimal input with a predominantly organic spray regime. This core principle of sustainable organic production encourages natural pest predators with flowers under every footstep.

lthough a national brand, Andrew Cook and his team at Just Shutters pride themselves on being a local company. Based in Newquay you can expect excellent customer service across the peninsula, both for residential home owners and those in the holiday letting market. With the adoption and acceptance of online meetings, after the recent pandemic, nondomicile owners can utilise Zoom or Facetime hook-ups to engage with the company, negating the need to be on-site when choosing the right blinds or shutters. The whole process becomes very streamlined and stress free with some placements achievable within a two-to-three-hour window – a boon on changeover days.

Besides being relatively easy to install shutters have also shaken off their purely functional, minimalist genesis. The number of different designs and materials available has exploded over the years, allowing you to match them with the over-arching theme of your interiors. Essentially each one can be as bespoke as you want it to be, and of course made to measure. Whilst they might, in some instances, be the more expensive option, their versatility means they provide better value than curtains or blinds. If privacy, light control, efficiency and durability are important to you, there is no better window dressing option. In terms of use, window shutters can be set to be partially open which allows the required light into the room whilst simultaneously reducing the impact of full sun on fabrics such as furniture and carpets. A recent study proved that shutters reduce heat loss more than blinds and curtains – a big plus as we move toward a more sustainable future. Hence, they can help maintain a desired room temperature and ultimately reduce your heating bills. In colder weather, louvres should be fully closed so that your room retains more heat. So, there is no doubt they meet all the criteria for a practical window covering and when you change your colour scheme you won’t have to change your window covering.

A beautiful timber staircase, designed by the team, has been finished using flush stair nosings to keep the look as minimalist and seam-free as possible, while the feature slat wall certainly makes an impact to the downstairs living area, offering an architectural feature to provide natural light which runs up through the staircase. Bespoke carpentry has been integrated throughout; fixtures and fittings like the stunning oak acupanel wood cladding system in the dining area is in keeping with the Nordic feel, which is reflected in subtle details throughout the property.

Possibly our favourite room in The Granary, the cosy living room is the essence of Hygge, a defining characteristic of Danish culture

INTERIORSIconic

With a reputation for a keen eye when it comes to innovative, fresh interiors, it comes as no surprise that iroka were the top choice for Boskensoe Barns when the time came for an overhaul. As part of a collection of five stunning barn conversions – including The Stable, Long House, Pig House and The Mill – The Granary was the final addition to the enchanting group of luxury holiday rentals, touched by the expert hands of iroka.

A custom kitchen and utility was also designed in-house, and features a matt black longline handle, contrasting wonderfully against a light driftwood-style slab door. Integrated LED strip lighting was installed along with a full-height Caesarstone splash back and worktop with streaks of grey vein, finished with draining grooves, while the cabinetry was produced by German manufacturers AGKU and installed by their dedicated, specially selected and highly skilled trades and craftsmen.

Wanting to combine the heritage of the buildings with a modern and contemporary look, each barn was individually styled by iroka, incorporating their history and identity. Features like exposed beams are in keeping with the rustic feel of the farm, while Scandinavian and Japandi inspired interiors add a modern, natural and luxurious touch, with a comprehensive range of finishes handpicked by the iroka’s Hayle-based interior design team.

It’s certainly clear that every detail has been taken into consideration by the design team at iroka, from the floors and doors to the handles and hinges. Every piece of furniture finds purpose in its rightful place, and nothing has been overlooked when it comes to this enchanting five-star holiday rental, which is lying in wait for you to book your next stay with Sykes Cottages. For all things interior, iroka have a wealth of information and services available via their showrooms, so make sure to get in touch with the experts of the industry.

which draws on the feeling of comfortable conviviality that brings with it a feeling of calm contentment. One particular highlight of the room is the wood burning stove feature wall, designed by the iroka team and thoroughly thought out, incorporating a slate split face tile chimney breast, slate hearth, bespoke oak shelving, lined log store, modern inset wood burning stove and finished with a handless, stone-top storage unit and accent slatted wall panelling. A natural colour palette of deep forest green and stone greys from Ecru is accentuated nicely with paint colours from Little Greene, and the study area features wall cladding for an added texture against Little Greene’s shade of ‘Livid’.

Restful tones of rich greens and earthy rust notes layered with textures of matt cotton velvets and linens bring a restful, calm feeling into the bedrooms, very much in keeping with the farm setting. Light wood furniture fitted and installed by the in-house delivery team complement the stunning A-frame beams that crown the master bedroom, while handmade curtains and roman blinds dress the windows throughout the property in neutral, simplistic fabrics, hung by iroka’s in-store specialist.

Comfort and durability line the floors in the form of quality carpeting, something which iroka pride themselves on with department specialists on hand in their Hayle showroom primed to advise on the perfect flooring.

Let’s not forget the striking contemporary bathrooms, adorned with rich, dark herringbone tiles against the statement oval-shaped freestanding bath, while the contrasting brushed brassware finishes off the look with a high-end finish, and the over-sized walk-in shower provides a luxurious addition amidst the neutral base of the light grey porcelain stone tiles.

Founded in 2004, Oltco has over 18 years’ experience as a leading flooring specialist for the domestic and commercial markets. With a passion for innovation and a desire to offer superior products, it is a Cornish business with national reach, dedicated to delivering solutions tailored to each client’s specific requirements. The creation of two unique outdoor flooring solutions, Recycle Bound and Recycle Base, has transformed driveways, patios, footpaths and balconies, terraces, courtyards and beer gardens across Cornwall, the wider UK and Channel Islands.

With its 50th franchise launch in sight, the UK's and Channel Islands' leading sustainable resin bound driveway specialist, Oltco, is laying the foundations for an exciting year ahead.

S ustainability is something very much at the forefront of Oltco’s business ethos.

If you’ve not heard of these groundbreaking products, we urge you to read on as they really are leading the way when it comes to putting sustainable flooring under your feet. Recycle Bound was developed in-house by Oltco’s team of technical experts and is a world first with the waste plastic used being obtained from a dedicated plastic recycling point and including plastic drink bottles, food packaging and straws. Combining this recycled waste plastic with a mixture of stone and aggregates creates a product which is low maintenance, has both longevity and durability, and also looks beautiful.

ABOVE é Left to right, Johnny Pearce and Tom Stringer

CORNWALLHOMELIVING | 47

Low-grade plastic is difficult to recycle and is often incinerated, releasing CO2 into the atmosphere. Oltco, however, has managed to create a ground reinforcement system which utilises stone mixed with this low-grade plastic, with the added benefit of also including waste ocean plastic. Recycle Base, as it is known, uses a grid made from 100% recycled plastic and has a load bearing capability of up to 800 tonnes per square metre. An average 70m2 driveway using Recycle Base could offset as much as a tonne of CO2, or the equivalent of planting six trees! Recycle Bound is then laid over the top resulting in a surface fit for both purpose and the planet. Such is the popularity of Oltco products, the business has now recycled the equivalent of over 200 million plastic straws in Recycle Bound transformations across the UK and Channel Islands, and has this year alone launched ten new franchises. The summer of 2022 has been an incredibly busy one for the team as they have installed some stunning outdoor transformations, and the versatility of the product means that it’s not just patios and driveways that have received the Oltco treatment. A glorious raised seating area at a property in Port Isaac benefitted from the smooth surface and marvellous anti-slip properties of Recycle Bound. What’s more, as the surface is permeable it means there are no annoying or unsightly puddles to dealWithwith.a20-year guarantee and a choice of colour blends and patterns, it’s no wonder that so many home and business owners are opting for this versatile product. If you’re unsure if this could be the flooring for you, the Oltco team is always on-hand to listen to your requirements in order to recommend the best option for your property. From the initial planning stage through to installation they will guide you through each stage of the project, ensuring that the finished product exceeds expectations. Such growth this year has seen two new members of the team join Oltco’s head office in Newquay; Tegen Mitchelmore as Franchise Account Manager, and Jess Pollard as Social Media Content Manager. Tegen will be onhand to support Oltco’s growing franchise network, while Jess will be capturing engaging content on-site, sharing it across Oltco’s social media platforms. Jess will also be liaising with each of Oltco’s franchisees to ensure that all of their platforms are kept up to date. As a skilled photographer and videographer, she will be perfectly placed to offer Oltco’s network the visual content they need to showcase their exciting work. Oltco Directors Tom Stringer and Johnny Pearce are immensely proud to continue to be growing both their team and their franchise network ahead of a busy 2023.

Electric fires have always traditionally been thought of as an inefficient way of heating your home, but with the trend for a cleaner way to heat your property, alongside the versatility an electric fire provides, many manufacturers are now placing more importance on the energy efficiency of these products than ever before. The rise in the popularity of electric heating means that the consumer has a much wider variety of products to choose from. Electric fires will convert 100% of the energy used into heat with very little wastage. Almost every penny spent on electricity is converted into heat for your home and, with the introduction of LED lighting and thermostatic controls, electric fireplaces only use the energy needed to keep the room at the temperature you desire. In addition to this efficiency, unlike other types of fires such as wood-burning or gas, electric fires don’t produce a real flame which means they don’t omit any nasty by-products such as smoke or waste gases, making them much better for the environment. Further benefits are that you can have heat at the touch of a button, installation is easy with little disruption, maintenance is minimal and you don’t need to have a flue or a chimney; all of which makes an electric fireplace or heating system a solid energy efficient investment for your home. We get some advice from the experts on how to heat your home in the most efficient way possible. The Eden Hearth & heatinghasshowroomHomedifferentoptionsateveryturn

E nergy use is on the tip of everyone’s tongue at the moment and rising fuel prices have become a household topic.

In light of this, we got in touch with the experts at Eden Heath & Home, who have over 21 years of expertise in the fireplace and heating industry. You might think that due to the recent hike in electricity prices, with more forecast later this year, that this form of heating wouldn’t be the best choice. However, here are some myth-busting facts about the use of electric fires versus gas and solid fuel which might just be a pleasant surprise!

Heating is one aspect of your electricity bill which often costs the most but with the right radiators and electric heating system in place you could actually be reducing your bills. At Eden Hearth & Home you will find a fantastic range of electric fires, fireplaces and heating products on display including energy efficient electric radiators that are a great replacement for old and ugly storage heaters. The Electrorad range of radiators come in various sizes and heat outputs, with one to suit every room in the house. They also have the bonus of WiFi or digital controls making each radiator independent in the home. Having the Wi-Fi option gives you greater flexibility and offers much more control over the energy usage and temperature requirements and can be controlled from your smart phone or tablet, wherever you are. Gone are the worries of burst pipes in a cold snap if you’re away and there’s no need to come back to a cold house in the evening; simply turn up the heat using the remote features and your home will be toasty on your return. From the latest trendy media walls to high efficiency heaters or a showpiece electric stove, Eden Hearth & Home has an amazing range of fires and fireplaces on display for you to see.

For centuries, different cultures around the world have recognised the many benefits associated with soaking in a traditional wooden hot tub. The Greeks, the Romans and the Japanese regard it as a ritual – an act of comforting the body and nourishing the soul. With the woodfired hot tubs of Kernow Springs, the occasional whiff of smoke and the crackle of the fire is a comforting reminder that the water in your hot tub is being heated by burning carbon neutral ‘coppiced’ wood – no electricity, no pumps, 100% natural and 100% sustainable. Now in collaboration with Water and Stone, to which Kernow Springs supply their beautifully crafted wild spas, it is easier than ever to experience your very own taste of outdoor luxury. Kernow Springs’ wood-fired wild spas are an idyllic off-grid solution that come free of any surprise energy bills, and installation is a breeze. Using his extensive knowledge and experience, Martin is leading the way in the industry of wood-fired hot tubs here in the south west. To find out more, be sure to visit the team on their stand at the Cornwall Home Improvement & Self Build Show, on 1st and 2nd October. READ DID YOU KNOW? The Eco Garden Pod design used for the outdoor saunas can also be used in a multitude of other ways, from outside office spaces to garden rooms.

C ornwall-based, former boat builder and father of two, Martin Dean, built a couple of wood-fired hot tubs for his garden after sampling their relaxing delights whilst on a family vacation. His beautiful back yard creations garnered much interest and as word spread demand for Martin’s hot tubs increased to the point he was able to launch his own company, Kernow Springs. Now a thriving business, Martin and his team build and supply eco-friendly wood-fired hot tubs across the south west. Many of us are choosing a greener lifestyle, becoming more conscious of ways we can reduce our environmental impact.

THE NATURAL Solution

Purchases and lifestyle habits affect the environment, and it’s important that we spend time evaluating the eco-friendly and sustainability aspects of the products we buy. Combine this with the rising energy bills of recent months and it’s no wonder that any dreams of a traditional hot tub may feel further from reach than ever. However, Kernow Springs has something in store that might have you re-considering giving up on your luxury dream.

A s the days begin to grow colder as we venture into autumn, now is the perfect time to get your new, renewable heating system installed, running and ready for the winter. As such, there has never been a better time to buy an air source heat pump. Much has been made of what's going on with electricity prices, but gas prices have already quadrupled and will be increasing again. Heating oil prices are in excess of £1 per litre – meaning homes heated by oil are looking at a bill in excess of £1,000 to fill up their oil tanks. Whichever way you look at it, heating prices are going up and installing an environmentally-friendly, energy-efficient heating system is the best way forward. Air source heat pumps run off electricity and convert heat stored within the air to supply our home's heating and hot water. As a result, they can output more than four times the energy they consume, making them highly efficient! As they work at low temperatures over longer periods of time, living in a home heated by a heat pump is noticeably friendlier. Maintaining your property's temperature means a home never feels too hot or too cold. As well as these benefits, the government is currently offering a £5,000 contribution towards the installation of an air source heat pump system. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme, or BUS, provides £5,000 towards the upfront costs of an installation. Offsetting nearly half of the total installation costs, meaning a home can convert to renewable heating for a similar cost to installing a replacement gas or oil boiler. With the heating season just around the corner and the inevitable rush on heating installation, get ahead of the game and install an air source heating system with GreenGenUK.

Kestrel Specialist Handrail Systems are a small, family-run business that have all the knowledge and expertise to bring a functional quality to your home. Kestrel installs balustrades, Juliet balconies and privacy screens using 316 grade mirror polished stainless-steel posts and handrails, which are particularly suited to coastal areas, and when combined with opaque glass create a personal environment with excellent weather protection. The versatility of using glass as a privacy screen means that you can create everything from a sheltered, private balcony to a full-height wind break. Or, if you are looking to create a low-level, secluded seating area, the use of satin glass means you get the benefit of privacy, while still being able to enjoy the view when moving around. There is also the option of using a combination of privacy and clear glass panels in different areas depending on what you want to obscure.

Recently, Kestrel worked with a customer and the carpenter that created a beautiful decking area to decide together on the best design for retaining their astonishing view and the functionality of the space. Using a 316 marine grade stainless steel with a high mirror polish to withstand the Cornish elements, and bearing safety in mind, the design used a handrail with toughened glass and also a toughened laminated glass without a handrail to achieve an uninterrupted view on the main deck. In order to accommodate the different glass thicknesses whilst still offering design continuity, the team were able to use a similar post design and glass clamp shape for a flawless finish. he idea to make gin was conjured up after a throw away remark: "You like gin, so why not make it?" As Angie and George continued walking their dog on Rock beach, little did they realise what that simple comment had put in motion. All they had to do was come up with a really good gin.

Next came the production of our first 1,000 litre distillation – very scary, but once bottled and released, they too were very well received. The adventure had begun and really became an unstoppable force.” It wasn’t long after that a fashion began to emerge for ‘instant’ cocktails in the home market, which is when Angie and George began to devise a series of rums to add to their repertoire. Five years later, and Cornish Rock Gin has eight gins and eight rums in its portfolio!

Simple, right?

Although not strictly a cocktail, their Rock Blue Angel Gin simply served with ice and tonic would be acceptable in any cocktail bar. Their Rock Mellow Yellow Gin, meanwhile, makes the perfect dry martini – just mix chilled dry vermouth with a shot of Rock Mellow and stir with an olive on a stick. Another gin cocktail they’ve devised was for the opening night of Hillary Bonners' play Dead Lies. To make the ‘Dead Lies’ cocktail, add a shot of Rock Cherry Kiss gin with a shot of Campari and top up with Fever Tree raspberry and rose petal soda. As for rum cocktails, their Coconut Paradise Cornish Rum makes the perfect piña colada. Then there’s the Tropics Mango & Passionfruit Cornish Rum, which makes the most amazing Porn Star Martini! Alternatively, if you’re after the best ever espresso martini, grab some White Espresso Cornish Rum and their Golden Vanilla Cornish Rum topped with espresso coffee – very special. Many more cocktails are set to emerge from the Cornish Rock Distillery, so be sure to keep an eye on the website and follow them on social media.

Angie and George take up the story: “The beginning was the hardest part, when producing the gin to a recipe was only an idea. Initially we produced 25 bottles just to test out on friends and family. After a big thumbs up and with great excitement we produced 500 bottles and, having sold them, we’d stumbled upon a market eager for more.

The experience is nothing short of a show-stopping culinary adventure, with many different components and performers contributing to the final dishes that appear on your plate, from the fishermen in Looe and the neighbouring farmer, to the wild mushroom forager and Cornish cheese makers. The menus change to reflect the seasons and spoils of the surrounding countryside and sea. Seasonal highlights for starters might include a heritage tomato salad with gazpacho and a crunchy sesame cracker, or John Dory with fragrant curry oil, toasted macadamia, cauliflower and bittersweet chicory. For the main event, Glen cites the melt in the mouth fillet of beef with beer-braised beef cheek amongst his favourite dishes. And while the menu is unashamedly heavy on meat and fish, when it turns to vegetarian options, it does so with no less aplomb. Working with Hugh West and Karen Carlyon at Tollhouse Pottery, Jude explains: “They now provide all of the crockery for Kota. Before we started collaborating, I was taken aback by their enthusiasm at the prospect of working together, but also by what they can create and have already achieved as high-end potters. They are both super busy, but were nevertheless looking for a new challenge. Luckily for me, that challenge was to work with Kota and ensure our diners were eating off fine crockery that did justice to our food.”

THE TABLE é ABOVE Jude Kereama  BELOW Hugh West and Karen Carlyon

Porthleven based chef Jude Kereama delivers flavours with a flourish with help from Tollhouse Pottery.

Thrown for

A couple of issues ago we spoke to Porthleven based chef Jude Kereama, whose collaboration with local artist Maxine Greer has seen the walls of his Porthleven restaurant come to life with colour, interest and creativity. It’s a combination that matches the food that Jude and his team bring to the table of every guest, and serves as proof of the magic that can happen when creatives come together. But it’s not only the restaurant walls on which you’ll find the marks of Jude’s determination to champion local artistry. In fact, while some of us may find ourselves ravenously focused on the food in front of us, the more discerning diners will appreciate the difference that the plate beneath it can make, something that Jude is acutely aware of.

The ethos at Tollhouse Pottery goes hand in hand with that which Jude continues to champion at Kota – being creative and presenting quality ingredients perfectly on fine crockery. “Hugh and Karen are fantastic people to work with and they are just like us in the way they love to create and make people smile with their craft.”

It seems that Hugh and Karen are destined for a busy few months as they continue to bring Jude’s imagination to life. As the chef himself puts it: “What we do in this industry is to try and keep our ideas interesting for our guests and luckily for us, we have Tollhouse Pottery to help keep that fire burning.”

Hugh and Karen also provide open bowls in autumnal colours, deeper bowls in a mushroom shade, as well as plates with chattered and shaded russet rims. “The attention we give to the detail, colour and quality of our handthrown porcelain work complements Jude’s beautiful menus.”

Hugh agrees, adding: “Working with Jude is always a pleasure. We love his cooking and he’s always receptive and complimentary about the pieces we produce for him.”

straight-sided dishes with chattered outside edges that create texture, and we do these in both white and leaf-green.”

Jude picks up the story. “Our first collection of crockery started with our reopening back in February. I was after a collection that reflected our upcoming seasons, but also the dishes that we serve in the restaurant. Each time a season changes, I talk to Hugh and Karen in advance about the shapes, colours and sizes of crockery we need for the new dishes.”

It’s a tall order, too, especially when you realise that Kota serves a lot of tasting menus, meaning they need crockery for nine courses. “That’s a lot of plates to fire!” says Jude. “It’s been a great challenge for us to get everything just right with what we are trying to create with Kota, and it’s a chef’s dream to have crockery made for you.”

So, what can we expect at Kota now that the leaves are beginning their annual fall? “We are always excited by what each season brings,” says Jude. “Autumn will bring more brown and orange glazes that reflect the ending of the hot summer season and the beginnings of autumn and mushroom season. We’ll start creating warmer dishes to reflect the season, and look at little cups that you can grasp to warm the hands as the weather turns. When the winter arrives, we’ll be creating a menu based on all the dishes I've made over the years on Great British Menu. I’m already imagining the crockery I need for those wintry evenings, and this will be the next project for November and December.”

CORNWALLFOODIELIVING | 79 é ABOVERIGHT& The complementarydifferingyetstylesofHugh(left)andKaren(right)  RIGHT Coastal palettes with flourishes of individuality

Briefing them in every detail, including size, colour and texture, it is no small undertaking to create the next season’s crockery for Kota. “The making of the piece takes a long time,” says Hugh. “After the initial meeting comes designing, throwing, firing, a second glaze firing, and experimenting, until we have the colour and form that’s in Jude’s mind. It’s a challenge, but as a pottery, we are continually striving to stretch our skills ever further, producing pots that are not only beautiful, but that instil a wish in the viewer to handle and admire by tactile means. Nothing is stocked if they don’t love to eat and drink it themselves; everything is sampled, and if the duo doesn’t think it works in terms of quality or provenance, it simply doesn’t make it. Hoping to bring healthy and tasty inspiration to everyday life, along with a little bit of luxury, the deli welcomes all to come in, take a seat and enjoy a dish created from the produce, whether inside or on the patio, with flaky pastries on offer for morning visitors. From freshly baked cakes, to cheeses, aged charcuterie, and even picnic hampers for a day to remember, there’s something for all tastes at The Cornish Kitchen. Come in to do your weekly shop or have a sit down with one of their lovely specialty coffee, teas, gourmet hot chocolates, or treat yourself to a tasting platter, deli sandwich, salad, soup or slice of cake whilst relaxing on the patio or inside in the comfy seating area. And that's not all! Their new website launched at the end of August, giving you the opportunity to order your in-store favourites online. Choose anything, select a basket size, and they’ll do the rest, putting together a hamper-style package that would be perfect for catering events, get-togethers, parties, and of course, Christmas.

Visit a world of victual delight, right in the heart of Falmouth.

READ DISCOVER MORE With so much on offer on the Trevaskis Farm menu, it’s not easy to choose which quality dish to go for, but we’ve managed to whittle down our favourite choice. Starting with seared scallops with Aja Blanco, grapes and olive oil, the South Devon breed beef short rib with bourguignon sauce and root vegetables was impossible to resist for a main course, and the selection of desserts at the counter is simply mouth-watering!

So, whilst the farm team are in the fields pruning fruit bushes galore in preparation for next year’s growing season, the kitchen and retail teams are ready to welcome diners and shoppers galore to sample everything that's on offer. If you don’t want to miss out on some great foodie deals and produce offers, make sure to keep an eye on Trevaskis’ social media accounts and website to be the first in the know.

As summer produce at Trevaskis Farm comes to an end, the restaurant takes on the foodie baton with some tasty autumn offers.

T he words of John Keats’ poem Ode to Autumn are a fitting tribute to life at Trevaskis Farm. As we head into autumn, the heat of the sun dips away and the farm embraces a calmer Cornish ‘season of mists of mellow fruitfulness’. The fields and polytunnels at Trevaskis Farm head into a more tranquil period during the shoulder months while from now, and on into festive period, the renowned farm eatery gets little chance to slow down. While the hospitality sector in the rest of our county tends to slow in pace at this time of year, the restaurant at the farm actually starts to gear-up, as local customers take advantage of the autumn offers they have come to enjoy soThroughoutmuch.

October and November you’ll find a selection of deals from the farm centred around a fine dining theme across a great value, set menu platform. “We find the excellent price point gives our customers the opportunity to make a real night of it with a bottle of wine (or two!), creating a lively, almost party, feel,” comments owner Giles Eustice. This sort of atmosphere can be hard to find in November in Cornwall’s restaurants, but Trevaskis Farm yet again seems to pull it off in style! The offers are not only limited to the restaurant, as there are always some great prices to be had at The Market, Trevaskis’ wonderfully well-stocked farm shop. Customers can expect to find deals on the sublime offering from the butchery department and its award-winning meat products, including home-reared British Lop pork and finest local South Devon breed beef.

As a consequence of this laudable stance, The Cornish Company’s most recent Corporate Social Responsibility venture has been to support Children's Hospice South West (CHSW), working in partnership with the charity on its ‘Big South West Cream Tea’ campaign. The aim is to raise as many funds as possible by getting family and friends to enjoy a cream tea, by giving customers the option to add a donation to their order, which is on course to raise £5,000 for the charity by the end of August. Operating throughout Cornwall, Devon and Somerset it provides care for children with life-threatening conditions along with professional family support services. They offer a home-fromhome, where children with life-limiting conditions and their families can take a short break to recharge their batteries in a homely, warm and welcoming environment.

A s a company with obvious vested interests in Cornwall, The Cornish Company likes to keep itself in tune with the community and is constantly asking how it can help local people and businesses. After all, we all have to pull together to make this world a better place, especially if through dint of hard work or luck, fortune has seen fit to place you in a position to exercise your philanthropic function.

The Cornish Company continues to grow since its inception in 2020, but one of its core values – a determination to support the community – will always remain the bedrock of its ethos.

W hen Copperfish Distillery opened its doors four years ago on Buller Quay in East Looe, the founders were keen to create great tasting, truly authentic Cornish drinks with a plan to grow the business, developing local employment and supporting the local economy. Four years on and the team of Bill, Jemma, Rob and Andy still share that plan, along with their quest of helping to put Looe on the Cornish food and drink map. And why not? There are some truly fabulous restaurants, hotels and producers in the locality, including The Sardine Factory, The Sail Loft, great tapas at The Portbyhan Hotel, fish and chips at The Coddy Shack, along with some of best pasties in the county including Sarah’s, a firm favourite.

craft distillery, making small batch spirits with pride and passion. TIPPLES

Not only does Copperfish distil their own gin and rum, they also make Cornish Moonshine and, if you love the Copperfish logo as much as we do, they’ve got some cool merchandise on offer too!

In essence, this means they don’t cut corners and use the best ingredients and methods they can. Take their rum for example, Copperfish Rum is one of the very few rums actually made from scratch in Cornwall. It starts from creating a wash from sugar cane molasses, which is then fermented before it enters the stills. This rich sweet earthy liquid is then heated gently up towards 80°C when the magic of distillation takes place. A pure white rum comes out of the still which is then poured into oak barrels to age for many months to develop taste and colour. Their great tasting drinks have been recognised by the Taste of the West awards where the team received four golds and three silvers in 2022. So what’s next for Copperfish? The team have taken on an additional premises on the quay that will be developed into a visitor centre where tours, tastings and makings will be open to the public. However, if you can’t wait until Spring 2023 when it’s due to open, why not visit the shop and bar or check out their website for more information.

Katie’s background in art and design has ensured the quirky, intimate spaces in the 18th century building are used to their full potential, adding a contemporary feel to a relaxed and unpretentious environment. Tom and his kitchen team create a dining experience that is sophisticated and creative with a fantastic balance of flavours and textures cleverly constructed to elevate and enhance the best seasonal ingredients. Procurement from passionate local suppliers is at the core of the kitchen ethos and shines through on the menu, from rod and line-caught fish (they are licensed to buy direct from fishermen) to vegetables from a justice-oriented, ecologically supportive and sustainable farm a few miles away. You could be forgiven for assuming it is all about the food at this little gem of a pub, but with one of the best back bar selections to be found in the county it is most definitely a destination for craft spirits, carefully curated cocktails, unconventional wines and award-winning national and local beers. The same ethos to responsible sourcing and sustainability in the food runs right through the pub. From biodynamic wines (Katie is a trained sommelier and curates the wine list around these values whilst creating a list perfectly in sync with Tom’s indulgent food) and local craft beers to locally grown, seasonal flowers on the tables. In spite of such excellence across the board, there is not an ounce of snobbery to be found here. Exciting times ahead for the Treguddick Distillery as a new face joins the team.

ARRIVESA master chef  TOP LEFT Tom Elson-Knight

Opened in October last year, Treguddick is located just outside of Launceston. In 2019 the barn was transformed into a beautiful and versatile venue, perfect for events, days out and memorable experiences. The captivating distillery tour and tasting experiences are always popular, with a bar stocked with over 40 bottles from English Spirit’s premium range. Not forgetting the restaurant where you can enjoy a unique dining experience. ‘Treguddick’s Epicurean Adventure’, as the venue’s first anniversary event is called, will see a five-course adventure menu that follows the journey of founder and Master Distiller, Dr John. From his first still, commissioned over ten years ago, John realised there was a gap in the market for genuinely high-quality spirits. Suitably galvanised, he set out to bring the methodology of distilling firmly into the 21st century. His creations have won the most prestigious awards at leading international spirit competitions and he is consistently leading innovation in the spirit’s market. In fact, he was first in the UK to distil rum, sambuca and baijiu, and has developed worldleading techniques for extracting flavours and accelerating ageing processes. The adventure evening will see the unveiling of the next venture with the final course! The event takes place on Saturday 5th November, with booking details available on the Treguddick website.

T reguddick Distillery is all about experiences that bring taste, quality and innovation to the table with the best ingredients the south west has to offer. To elevate this stance even further, Tom Elson-Knight will become a member of the team in September. His credentials are impeccable, having appeared in the 2019 series of MasterChef where he made it to the final, followed by appearances at pop-up shows around the UK with Salt Kitchen. Putting his itinerant lifestyle on hold, Tom explains: “Treguddick is an incredible and unique venue with bags of potential, and I am really excited to take the kitchen to the next level. I have already begun working with the team on our first events and I have been delighted to put together a five-course menu for the first anniversary of Treguddick on November 5th.”

Mainbrace are changing the way we think about rum by infusing tradition with a fresh modern twist. ABOVE Celebrating courage, teamwork and Innovation BELOW Premium Golden Rum and Always Sunny Cocktail

Run by a father and sons team based out of the Helford passage, the idea for Mainbrace was born when together they watched a team of local gig racers celebrating their win, and a moment of courage, teamwork and friendship inspired a venture into the spirits business to find a way to bottle that feeling.

FOODIEfriendshipBOTTLED

As a family of varied tastes, they wanted to create something that would fit perfectly into a refreshing long drink, a sophisticated cocktail or to be savoured neat. Eventually they’d settle on a unique blend of two distinct and never-before bottled styles to produce a smooth, perfectly balanced golden rum with no additives, sourced from Guyana and Martinique. This splicing of two rums got them thinking, and, knowing the phrase of “Splice the Mainbrace”, they thought it perfectly encapsulated the product and spirit of the rum, and we couldn’t agree more.

By working with smaller, local brands the team hope to alter the perception of drinking rum to one of sophistication, introducing the thought of rum in a simple cocktail or with a delicious mixer like ginger ale or tonic, with an added slice of orange of extra flavour. With the perception of drinking premium rum in a simple way so as to not ruin the quality spirit in mind, Mainbrace’s favourite cocktail is the Always Sunny, an easy cocktail to make at home. Just add plenty of ice into a high ball glass, followed by 50 ml of Mainbrace Premium Golden Run, 25 ml of fresh orange juice, and then top up with ginger ale. Garnish with an orange wedge and you will have the perfect drink to bring sunshine into your life, no matter where you are! The rich and natural flavours with notes of dried fruits, spices, apple and toffee, Mainbrace is also wonderful savoured neat for those experienced rum and whisky drinkers.

With the rise of new gins and rums, naturally an increase in new and innovative mixers has followed, which can only mean exciting and creative opportunities for brands like Mainbrace, who recently collaborated with small mixer brands like Navas Drinks, a local premium Cornish mixer, and Sekforde Drinks.

F or the summer collection, Ayr Space has applied minimal print detail against relaxed silhouettes, using contrasting tones inspired by the shallow sandy waters, white walled cottages and warm nights spent in St. Ives. The series is made up of standalone pieces that quickly become day-to-day wear once the temperatures start to soar. “We saw the 2022 season as the perfect platform to reintroduce ourselves; to express who we are and what we are about. Summertime in St Ives and Cornwall can be a little insane, so we wanted to reflect a more subdued, laid-back approach in our new series,” explains owner, Dan Chater.

Combing coastal elements with modernstreetwear and graphic work inspired by spaceflight and cinema, Ayr Space produce high-quality pieces in small runs, avoiding the mass-production side of the fashion industry.

Dan continues: “I began working on a design during the early months of the pandemic; something that could represent all of Cornwall and Scilly. Many towns and villages were rocked with the sudden loss of loved ones and key pillars of their communities. Jobs were lost and many businesses relying on tourism had to shut their doors leaving families struggling, all while house prices soared along with the overall cost of living. Once the country had begun to open up again in limited capacity, surviving businesses, particularly hospitality found themselves at breaking point with limited staff and supply chain delays – yet everyone just kept going and pushing on!”

Photographer Ander Gunn has spent a lifetime turning his lens to the world. From a photo of a workingclass Londoner framed in the doorway of a red-brick clad public convenience, to intimate portraits of the brightest lights of the St Ives School, this exhibition of photographic images reflects his output over the last 70 years to offer a sample of both rural and urban subject matter. “Watching my father at work felt like being with a magician conjuring up images that floated into life,” explains his daughter, Charlotte Gunn. “Time always seemed to melt away. It was a very magical experience. To wash his photographs Ander had to use the bath. Large prints of people, landscapes and seascapes floating as we cleaned our teeth. I’d often see people that I recognised locally – Roger Hilton, Patrick Heron, a tin miner, a farmer with his cattle. Other familiar faces included writers and artists such as Tom Stoppard, Barbara Hepworth, Jean Rhys, Karl Weshke, Brenda Wooton and my uncle Thom, Ander’s brother.”

For Helford River, Jackson turns his eye to that stretch of water running west to east, entering the sea into Falmouth Bay. The Helford’s shoreline is vast, taking in a wide range of habitats; its exposed rocky estuary stands in stark contrast to the sheltered muddy creeks found further inland. This flooded river valley is fed by seven streams including Frenchman’s Creek, immortalised by Daphne DuMaurier’s enduringly popular novel of the same name. A dedicated environmentalist, Kurt Jackson is drawn to the Helford not just for its stunning vistas and romantic associations, but equally for its significance as an area rich in biodiversity and importance to conservation and wildlife. In what is sure to be another blockbuster, this exhibition draws together Jackson’s paintings, sculptures, etchings and ceramics to celebrate a truly unique part of Cornwall.

The name Kurt Jackson is synonymous with large-scale, ambitious, visceral plein-air paintings that capture the raw power and natural beauty of the landscape laid before his canvas. In his newest collection, leading British contemporary artist Kurt Jackson revisits the Helford River, its creeks and tributaries to reveal stunning beauty and incredible biodiversity. Along the way, Jackson explores the wildlife and the communities that live in and on this unique watercourse.

Owned and run by artists and bespoke picture framers Liz Hackney and Paul Clark, you'll find originals and prints by both of them displayed amongst the eclectic collection of art and crafts from artists and designers across the UK, including Stephanie Axtell from Wadebridge and Duporth artist Alan Arthurs. New for this year, Atishoo is delighted to introduce collage artist Dawn Maciocia, based in Fife, Scotland. Her artwork, made with torn paper, includes foxes, hares, owls and British garden birds. She prints her own fabric from the designs and produces lampshades, cushions and tiles as well as limited edition prints of her stunning work. The lampshades are completed with recycled coloured glass lamp-bases and colourful flexes all handmade in the South West. Another new addition this year are raku clocks made by the incredibly talented Stonesplitter Ceramics which complement the colourful paintings that hang in the gallery. If you look very carefully, you’ll find a little mouse hidden on each clock! Liz and Paul also offer a bespoke picture framing service from the onsite workshop with over 40 years of combined experience between them. Atishoo is the official picture framers for some of Cornwall's leading artists, including Amanda Hoskin and Ben Taffinder; with an eye for detail, they are known for their quality framing work and are often booked up four to six weeks in advance, so it's worth planning ahead if you have a show coming up and require their services.

Sometimes overlooked by visitors and locals alike due to its tucked-away location, it is a place well worth seeking out if you are in the area. Full to the brim with original art, prints, glassware, ceramics and homewares –from plush faux velvet cushions to beautiful lampshades – it's not what you would expect from a normal formal gallery space and that is part of its elusive charm.

I n short, Business Relief is not available. The relief applies to reduce the chargeable value of a qualifying asset by either 100% (total relief) or 50%, saving inheritance tax that is generally chargeable at 40%, and therefore hugely valuable. Broadly, the relief applies to trading business assets – interests in trading businesses themselves, assets used in a trading business and shares in unquoted trading companies.

An overwhelming number of holiday-let landlords believe that their property won’t be subject to inheritance tax. Think again. the BELOW  Steve MaggsCTA Tax

Furnished holiday lets (FHLs) are a property investment activity (not a trade) that is deemed to be a trading activity for many tax purposes, and are, at least theoretically, capable of qualifying for inheritance tax Business Relief. This the starting point of the great myth!

LIFESTYLE 106 | CORNWALL LIVING

Busting

For Business Relief to apply, the business asset being considered must not consist of “wholly or mainly…making or holding investments”. Property businesses are notoriously difficult for placing on the scale of investment activity on one end of the scale and training activity on the other. In recent years, only one judgement by the First Tier Tribunal has resulted in a win for the taxpayer, and even this reaffirms the position that the bar is incredibly high for any FHL landlord to meet to be considered to qualify for Business Relief.

This case was the case of Personal Representatives of Graham versus HMRC – a ‘home case’ given that it concerned an FHL business on the Isles of Scilly. HMRC enquired into the claim for Business Relief in relation to the four self-catering flats, and farmhouse occasionally used as bed and breakfast accommodation. As ever, the question was whether Mrs Graham and her daughter (who ran the business) were providing enough additional services to mean that the business was not one of property investment.

This opinion has been consistently ratified by the tax tribunals and courts –as is evidenced by the significant number of judgements that have gone in HMRC’s favour when challenging Business Relief claims made by executors of deceased estates owning interests in FHLs.

construction operation on the other extreme of the scale at the trading end. FHL activity falls somewhere in between these extremes, falling somewhere mid-way along the scale – how far along the scale the particular FHL activity sits determines the qualification for Business Relief. Where an FHL fits on this property activity scale is largely determined by the provision of services, and the facilities provided. The myth can be whittled down to FHL landlords assuming that their FHL property interests automatically qualify for Business Relief, whereas placement on this scale actually determines qualification – and the bar is an extremely high one!

FHL landlords need to be aware that they are highly unlikely to qualify for inheritance tax Business Relief, meaning that their interests in the properties will be chargeable to inheritance tax. This means that it makes sense to seek experienced and professional advice on how best to plan for this.

The tribunal heard that the services and facilities included refreshments and a welcome pack on arrival; the owners being on hand to take in shopping, organise celebrations and organise activities, as well as arrange the purchase of fresh fish for their customers; an outdoor pool; well-maintained gardens; a sauna, games room, laundry, separate guest lounge and barbeque area; the supply of fresh flowers, homemade goods, toiletries, books and more; as well as a golf buggy and bicycle hire. In short, the services and facilities were extensive, and the operation was demanding. The tribunal decided that it was “an exceptional case which does, just, fall on the non-mainly investment side of the line”. It is difficult to see what more an FHL landlord could do to push the operation firmly over the line. It evidences the difficulty FHL landlords face, as opposed to being held out as a victory and signal for change.

The view of HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is stated (in their Inheritance Tax Manual to their officers) as: “HMRC’s view is that furnished holiday lets will in general not qualify for business property relief. The income derived from such businesses will largely consist of rent in return for the occupation of property. There may however be cases where the level of additional services provided is so high that the activity can be considered as non-investment, and each case needs to be treated on its own facts.”

Mr Windhaber stresses the importance of maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, eating a balanced diet (avoiding processed foods) and carrying out regular gentle exercise, as they have all been shown to help improve and maintain a healthy circulation. However, for those struggling with the appearance of their veins, there are options to cover up and camouflage unsightly veins with concealer or fake tan product, whilst aching can be relieved by the use of compression stockings or the application of topical anti-inflammatory gels such ibuprofen or Voltarol gel, both of which can be purchased over the counter.

LIFESTYLE 110 | CORNWALL LIVING C ornwall in summertime truly is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Spending time outside getting fresh air and exercise is key to maintaining our mental and physical health.

Unfortunately, varicose veins could be affecting this and preventing some from wanting to, or being able to, go outside this summer.

Mr Windhaber tells us: “For those patients who want to get rid of their varicose veins there are a number of treatments available, all performed as a ‘walk in, walk out’ procedure under local anaesthetic at Duchy Hospital. These treatments are recommended by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence NICE CG168 (www.nice.org. uk/guidance/cg168) as being safe and the most effective available for this condition. Treatments include endovenous laser therapy, radiofrequency ablation, microphlebectomy, sclerotherapy (foam) and short-wave diathermy.” Mr Windhaber tailors treatment to each individual based on a full clinical history and detailed venous duplex scan.

Mr Rob Windhaber is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon and Vein Expert specialising in the minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins under local anaesthetic, working at Duchy Hospital. We have been talking to Mr Windhaber about symptoms and treatment: “Many patients tell me that they cover up and avoid wearing summer clothes because they are uncomfortable about the appearance of veins on their legs. Others find they are limited in their activities by discomfort or swelling in the legs when they walk. The good news is that it does not have to be like this. Vein treatments have improved massively since the days of painful stripping operations under general anaesthesia and there are many things that you can do yourself to ease the condition.”
