Liquorice the seal pup returns to the wild

Liquorice, a rare grey seal pup rescued from Cornwall’s coastline, has returned to the wild after a successful rehabilitation at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. Completely black from head to toe, Liquorice is ‘melanistic’. The condition happens when too much melanin is produced in the skin – something seen in just one in 400 grey seals.

She first came to the Sanctuary back in January, underweight and with breathing difficulties, after being spotted by local walkers who called the Cornish Seal Sanctuary for help. Now, however, she has made a successful return to the sea after receiving expert care from the Sanctuary’s animal care team.

Tamara Cooper, the Sanctuary’s curator, says: “While it’s sad to see Liquorice go, we know the wild is the best place for her and we’re sure she will now thrive in the place where she is supposed to be.”

Did you know that you don’t have to spend the time and money to travel to far-flung retreats in order to experience holiday splendour?

Here in Cornwall, there’s a wide selection of luxury stays, all with the incredible backdrop of the Duchy’s beautiful landscape. If you’re travelling from out of county, then Cornwall is a little over five hours from London by car. With the last remaining section of single carriageway on the A30 due to be upgraded later this year, driving to your holiday home is a great way to travel. If you prefer to fly, then there are regular domestic flights from the ideally situated Cornwall Airport Newquay, or choose from the regular train services from across the UK.

With travel sorted, where should you choose to rest your head? Whether it be for a much-needed weekend escape or a longer stay, Cornwall’s luxury hotels and resorts offer the warmest of welcomes and an opportunity to relax in tranquil surroundings. The most southerly landfall in the UK, the Isles of Scilly lie just off Cornwall’s south-west coast, around 28 miles from Land’s End. And yet, the archipelago of islands, five of which are inhabited, feel like a world apart, with their own unique history, culture and even geography.

If you fancy a tipple, the islands are home to vineyards and even a gin school. And for foodies, the bounty of the sea is a given, from fish and chips to fresh lobster. We still haven’t mentioned the miles of coastal paths, spectacular beaches, golf, horse riding, cycling… the list goes on. The islands are famously dog-friendly, and your dogs are very welcome on board our flights and ferry.

All these experiences take place in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of the world you will ever see and can be enjoyed in just one day. However, there is so much to see, feel and do on the islands that for a lot of people, one day is simply not enough! SPRING INTO adventure
