Located in Helston’s historic market buildings, the Cornish Museum of Life is home to thousands of objects and artefacts that will transport you back in time on a journey through Cornish heritage. Spread over five floors, the museum is free to enter and welcomes the whole family through their doors, including the dog!

Step inside to find one of the largest Cornish social history collections, from a five-ton cider press to the scene of a 1950’s kitchen. Learn about Helston’s famous inventor, Henry Trengrouse, whose rocket lifesaving apparatus saved thousands of lives; and the Victorian classroom will give the kids a taste of what it was like to learn over one hundred years ago. Getting the best of the beach with Kernow Veterinary Group

While we all like to share our fun on the beach with our four-legged friends, Kernow Veterinary Group have let us in on a few things to bear in mind to keep our pups happy and safe by the sea. For instance, before even stepping foot on sand you’ll want to check the local rules regarding beach access, and find a beach to suit you and your canine friend! Remember, dogs are susceptible to heat stroke on hot days, so perhaps avoid the beach on hotter days, or go early in the morning or in the evening, with plenty of shade and water available. Also, be mindful of other people on the beach to avoid any upset picnics or borrowed frisbees! A good ‘leave

it’ cue can be very helpful here. Remember to watch out for local wildlife, keeping your dog away and under control, and be mindful of strong currents if your dog is a water baby. With the local vets’ details on hand just in case, and with a few beach essentials, we can all play safely in the sun this season.

It doesn’t stop there; this spring and summer the team will be expanding their ever-popular range of floating toys, not to mention doggy life jackets and the Clima cool jacket, so that the whole family can join in the fun at the beach, all of which will be available online. There is also a new system in which customers can have more choice over the range of George Barclay beds by ordering online and receiving a complimentary delivery with a special retailer code!

Over Christmas, the Bella’s team donated money and various items to local animal charities, and this year they’re only reaching higher, looking for ways in which they can provide support all year round.

Reasons why 5

Pooch perfect places for you and your pal.

1WOODA FARM HOLIDAYS

4WALKS

2LOCAL BEACHES

Your four-legged friend is welcome on beaches like Sandymouth, Black Rock and Northcott all year round, while other local beaches like Widemouth, Summerleave and Crooklets will have seasonal restrictions, so make sure to look those up!

5WATER SPORTS

If it’s a day on the beach, why not have a go at the local water sports opportunities? Immerse yourself in salt water and have a crack at the Cornish surf scene while your dog plays with the rest of the gang on the beach.

3CAFÉS AND RESTAURANTS

Why not head on over to one of Bude’s doggyfriendly eateries? Rosie’s Kitchen, The Bank and The Barge are primed and ready for you and your pooch.

A dog’s DELIGHT

Taking the dog with you on holiday shouldn’t mean being cooped up in a caravan park or a bare-boned B&B. Karma St. Martin’s hotel in the Cornish Isles of Scilly extends a warm welcome to its canine clientele. Karma’s stunning natural setting, creature comforts, and tranquil surroundings will leave you and your furry friend feeling like ‘Top-Dog’.

Travelling with your four-legged friend is a breeze... Karma’s knowledgeable front office team is on hand to guide and advise you on the two transport options. Whether your lovable pooch is a wannabe Scillonian sea-dog or a jet-setter, Karma’s team will explain each mode of transport in detail and check availability of the RSPCA approved animal boxes on the SkyBus airplanes. From the moment your four-legged companion arrives at the hotel, they will be welcomed with a VIP (Very Important Pet) registration form, a welcome treat, bowls, blankets and a canine-friendly menu. The petloving Karma team can provide dog-sitting services,

leaving you free to enjoy a spa treatment or make friends with the local seal colony on a snorkelling trip. Just visit www.karmastmartins.com for more details.

Unlike the main beaches on St. Mary’s, the ones on St. Martin’s are dog friendly all year round. Soak up the fresh sea-scented air whilst your dog enjoys the feel of soft powdery white sand under his paws. The unpolluted waters are ideal for a spot of doggy paddle and the hotel provides complimentary towels for mucky pups to freshen up after a long day outdoors.

For peace of mind, there is also a caring Vet Support Group on the Islands. With the help of supporters and extensive fundraising, a purpose-built surgery, consisting of consultation room, X-ray room and operating theatre with living accommodation for the incumbent vet, was completed in December 2010.

OF THE BEST

Reasons why 5

DOGS LOVE THE FALMOUTH HOTEL

Five reasons why the Falmouth Hotel should be top of your list for a dog-friendly stay.

1LUXURY

Often referred to as the ‘Grande Dame of Falmouth’, Falmouth Hotel’s luxurious and relaxed atmosphere means you’ll be looked after by a team that understands how dogs are very much part of the tribe. The hotel has many dog-friendly rooms that boast wonderful sea views. Dogs are also allowed out and about in the hotel grounds on a lead, so, it’s really a no-brainer to bring your waggy tailed friend along!

2LOCAL BEACHES

This area of Cornwall couldn’t be better for playing on the sands. Gyllyngvase beach is right on the doorstep. Dogs are permitted before 10am for a cool early morning walk or after 6pm for a balmy evening stroll any time after 6pm in high season. After September 30th, when the temperature has dropped a bit, you and your pooch have the run of the shoreline 24/7. Grab a rug and a picnic and enjoy!

3HISTORY

Endless miles of walks stretch from either end of the seafront promenade. Turn left out of the hotel and you’ll discover the historic Pedennis Castle. Or walk a little further into town to the Prince of Wales pier where you and your pup can catch the St Mawe’s Ferry across the bay to explore the Roseland Peninsula. Head right and the South West Coast Path towards Mawnan Smith winds past Maenporth beach, around Rosemullion Head and on to the banks of the Helford.

4PUBS

Falmouth town itself has a plethora of dog-friendly pubs, cafés and restaurants for refuelling on your Cornish adventures. Inside the Falmouth Hotel’s Castle Beach Bar & Brasserie, you can expect locally caught fish and grass-fed local meat to grace the menu. And of course there are Cornish pasties, cream teas, and local ice-cream in abundance.

5PET FRIENDLY

Last but not least, and our favourite reason for staying at the Falmouth Hotel, is that you don’t have to leave anyone behind. With the best available rates on offer, and a small additional charge for your pup per night, it’s never been easier to holiday with your pooch!

Jump, bounce, slide and splash your way around the ever-popular Aquapark, which is undoubtedly the favourite element of the park amongst visitors young and old. With a maximum of 40 people during one session, and with lifeguards on hand to maintain everyone’s safety, what could be more thrilling than splashing and sliding off an inflatable obstacle course into fresh water with the kids, or a group of friends?

While the Aquapark may well be the star of the show, there is endless amounts of fun to be had on an E-boat; be the captain of your own ship and explore the quarry

on your own unique voyage! With buoys and obstacles to navigate, you can hone your skills and be a pro in no time, and the fun info boards will tell you all about the geology and history of the site. What’s more, your four-legged friend is more than welcome on-site; walk the paths and explore the full expanse of the quarry, taking in the sheer beauty from a different vista. Why not bring a picnic along for the day, or grab a coffee to ready yourself for a day of fun?

With a multitude of visitors joining the fun every year, it’s no wonder that the park has amassed a collection of shining reviews, as one happy customer reflects: “Wonderful place to engage in a number of outdoor sports, the staff make you feel truly welcome and safe! The Aqua Park is heaps of fun, we will be back!” Re-opening for fun-filled days in May of this year, make sure to go online and book your summer adventure with Kernow Adventure Park.

A finalist in the 2023 National Fish & Chip Awards, it’s easy to see why, with Cornish flaky fish from Newlyn in crispy batter and the most moreish chips made from the finest Cornish potatoes. Mylor’s hidden location makes it the perfect spot for a creekside walk. ZIP-A-DEE

doo-dah!

Make every day a wonderful day for your happy hound with a zip up coat from Slickers Doghouse.

Although Cornwall gets more than its fair share of lovely weather, we do get days when the sun hides its head, the clouds gather and the temperature drops. However, staying in just isn’t an option when you have a dog, as walks are a daily must. Fear not, as we have discovered a range of zip up seasonal coats for dogs from Stix which could be exactly what you and your pooch are looking for!

After little success of finding a dog coat that would tick all the boxes, Stix founders Jo Murray and Desi Heptinstall saw an opportunity to create their own range of high-quality waterproof dog coats that would be functional and user-friendly, while also being stylish. Stix coats are made from Polartec fleece, which is both warm and breathable – perfect for Cornwall’s sometimes unpredictable weather! They have a signature zip for ease of putting on – follow legs, neck, zip and your dog will be cosy and warm in minutes. Taking off is simply the reverse and as they are machine washable and fastdrying, your dog’s Stix coat will be clean and ready in no time for your next canine adventure.

Finding the right size coat is easy, too. Grab a soft tape measure, and perhaps the promise of a treat for standing still, and take the back measurement needed to match up against the comprehensive size chart. Covering more than 25 different breeds, with a range of sizes for each – whether you have a greyhound or a golden retriever, a pug or a pointer – your four-legged friend will be ready for walkies, whatever the weather.

What’s more, a Stix coat is also kind on the environment. Carbon paw-prints are very important to Stix and so they proudly support sustainable packaging solutions, using only recycled and recyclable materials to package their orders. The Polartec fleece is also made from 90% recycled bottles, making it one of, if not the most environmentally friendly dog-coat on the market! Be sure to check out the range on Slickers’ website or pop into the store to see the quality for yourself.

A TRIP TO TREVAUNANCE COVE

One of the north Cornish coast’s best-kept secrets, Trevaunance Cove is the main beach at St Agnes. A series of caves offer ample opportunity for exploration, and at low tide there is the opportunity to walk across to the neighbouring beach of Trevellas Porth. Fortunately, dogs on leads are welcome on both all year round – just be sure to check the tide times and conditions before you head out. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, why not pop into Schooners? With no need to book, this dog-friendly, beach-side restaurant offers table dining and takeaway, with a seafood-led menu pulling all kinds of flavourful punches.

Put simply, for those in search of a real taste of seaside Cornwall, a trip to Trevaunance Cove comes highly recommended!

ON THEright track

To help you make the most of the coastal path that edges the shining shores of Cornwall, we’ve collected all the information you and your pooch need to stay safe this season.

We reveal the South West Coast Path Association’s top tips for staying safe whilst exploring Cornwall’s coastal paths with your furry friend in tow.

The first is to always keep your dog in sight and use a lead if their recall isn’t always reliable. This will help to keep your dog away from cliff edges, which are often loose and home to rabbits! There are also some stretches of the coast path that lie within areas of mining heritage, and whilst these are fascinating stretches to explore, be aware that there may be uncapped mine shafts hidden in the undergrowth near the path.

If you come across sheep, cows, horses or other animals grazing in fields alongside the coast path, irrespective of how well trained your dog is, you should always clip on a short lead – it’s much safer for everybody. If you feel threatened by cattle, then the SWCP recommends unclipping the lead so that you can escape separately.

Even if your dog has great recall or you’re using a lead, you never know when your furry friend is likely to bolt off in excitement. With that in mind, it’s worth ensuring yours has a name tag and is micro-chipped. Even a temporary name tag with your contact details on it can help other walkers get in touch, should they come across your escaped hound.

The next tip is to not let your dog run up to other people uninvited. Not everybody likes dogs, and there have been incidents where walkers have stepped out of the way of dogs with fatal consequences.

One thing we can say for sure that nobody likes, is dog poop left on the path. Not only does it give dog-owners everywhere a bad name, it can it pass on diseases to people and farm animals, so be sure to ‘bag it and bin it’ wherever you are.

Other advice includes winding the windows down in your car should you need to leave your dog inside for a short time, and to keep an eye out for the white, waxy lumps of palm oil that sometimes wash

up on beaches. These can be harmful if eaten by dogs, so if you see yours munching on something near the shoreline, it’s certainly worth intervening.
