PROUD TO BE PART OF

Welcome

From the Editor

to the Bath and Bristol edition of Cornwall Living!

We all know that getting outdoors is not only good for our bodies, it's essential for our minds too. Connecting with land and sea this month, Rosie Cattrell has been searching out some al-fresco adventures. From page 10, join Rosie as she sails, swims, slips and soars her way across the Duchy, learning new skills and experiencing daredevil activities to get the heart pumping! If you're staying in the Duchy, or looking for some school-holiday fun, then we've got you covered with a range of outdoor activities.

Talking of stays, I had the privilege of taking a sneak peak at St Michaels Resort's new spa lodges. These luxury retreats offer a peaceful sanctuary where you can relax in a private space while benefiting from all of the hotel amenities, including the incredible hydrotherapy pool and recently refurbished spa garden. Take a look for yourself from page 4

For self-catering stays, Shore Stays have an enviable portfolio of properties which focus on holiday homes close to the beach. Turn to page 15 to discover more about this family-run business and how they can quickly turn your seaside-stay dreams into reality. If you have a home by the sea, then they also offer some excellent marketing packages, treating your property with the same care and attention that you would.

If a single, annual holiday stay in Cornwall just isn't enough, then I urge you to take a look at the Heligan Lodges by Gwel An Mor (from page 16). The resort sits in an elevated position above the harbour town of Portreath and while these eco-lodges offer incredible seclusion they are also very wellconnected. Designed and furnished to the highest specification, a Heligan Lodge comes with a 999-year lease, so not only can you enjoy multiple holidays, your family can enjoy this gorgeous north-coast destination for years to come.

For a more permanent residence in the Duchy, LuxuryLife Developments' new private, gated community on the outskirts of Newquay offers the ultimate in retirement accommodation. Fir Hill Park is a collection of luxury permanent homes available to over 45s and is a brilliant base for embracing the Cornish lifestyle.

Teaming up with our award-winning property partners Rohrs and Rowe, this issue we also bring you a host of luxury homes on the market, from page 26. Coastal, rural, boltholes and luxury residences... the choice is yours.

…happy reading!

Escape to cosy and quiet Cornwall this autumn

If you are looking to book a last-minute getaway in September or October, why not visit Polmanter in St Ives?

Polmanter’s sophisticated apartments and hot-tub cottages provide the perfect escape for you to explore this beautiful part of the county at a slower pace, once the summer crowds have left. September holidays benefit from the last of the warm weather (and sea temperatures!) along with the town’s annual two-week music and arts festival from the 9th to the 23rd. October provides the chance for some impressive wave watching and windy walks along miles of quiet sandy shores.

Alternatively, stay tucked inside your luxury self-catering accommodation. Apartments sleep up to four and cottages sleep up to six, each with parking for two vehicles and EV charging. If you choose to stay in a cosy cottage, enjoy some added luxury in the form of your very own hot tub and private garden to watch the Cornish sun go down.

What’s more, all accommodation is dog friendly, so nobody gets left behind!

All properties include access to the five-star facilities at Polmanter, like the heated outdoor swimming pool (until mid-September), the Stable Bar and Restaurant, indoor soft play for your little ones and treatment rooms for some much-deserved relaxation.

If this wasn’t enough to tempt you, Polmanter is currently offering 15% off your stay throughout September and 20% throughout October (including half-term), making it the go-to place for your Cornish retreat this autumn.

For more information call 01736 795640 or email reception@polmanter.com

15% off your summer stay!

Looking for a break in the south west? If so, we recommend experiencing the luxury of a Richardson Hotel! With hotels by the beach in Cornwall and Devon, Richardson Hotels has a selection of special offers tailored to you at each hotel. Each offers you the chance to enjoy the experiences, unbeatable prices, award-winning food and spectacular views that each hotel offers.

As an example, The Falmouth Hotel, just a stone’s throw from Castle beach, has

fabulous views over Henry VIII’s Pendennis Castle, stretching across the bay and the open ocean beyond. It also has some superb things to do on site, including a spa, leisure and fitness facilities, and of course, an award-winning restaurant.

Currently offering 15% off its best summer prices, if you’re yet to book your 2023 break, be sure to do so soon with Richardson Hotels.

For more information call 0800 0052244 or visit www.falmouthhotel.co.uk

We are looking to expand our portfolio across the county, and are dedicated to making the process of sharing your holiday home easy and enjoyable. With tailored services to suit your needs, you can be involved as much or as little as you like, knowing that you and your guests are in safe hands.

Find the missing piece to your health jigsaw

The modern world is a wonderful place, but it’s not without its stresses. Whether you work a tough, physical job or sit for hours of the day hunched over a desk, aches and pains are, for many, part and parcel of working life. It could be lower back or neck pain, or the impossibly high walls of chronic stress that you can’t even begin to imagine breaking down.

If you’re struggling, it’s reassuring to know that there is a results-based clinic right here in Cornwall that can offer you a well-rounded health plan based on Zone Technique – to get you the results you’re looking for, and restore the balance your life is missing. Run by Jonathan Gleed, The Health Advantage, Lostwithiel, is also completely unique to this part of the world, offering clients an alternative when all other options have been exhausted.

Love of Lemons celebrates success

The results speak for themselves, too, with one client saying: “I went only three times and cannot believe the transformation! Give them a go. You have nothing to lose but your pain.” Others hail The Health Advantage as “likely to be the missing piece of your health jigsaw”, praising Jonathan for “sorting my life-long problem in just six weeks” and allowing one client to “live my life pain free and back to normal”.

So, if you’re exasperated at trying and failing to resolve your aches, pains or chronic stress, there’s a good chance that Jonathan could help, so be sure to book yourself an appointment and take advantage of his unique approach to healing.

ComeOUTSIDE

From ocean expeditions to tree-top explorations, the opportunities for outdoor adventure in Cornwall are endless.

Having been lucky enough to be born and raised here in Cornwall, every peek of the sun through the clouds meant time spent outside, in the outdoor playground that is our beautiful county. As a child, days spent by the sea felt commonplace; splashing around in the salty surf with siblings and friends; riding my first surfboard into shore while Dad pushed from behind; finding my balance without my stabilisers on one of the many cycle trails that weave through the countryside and around the coast. The opportunities were endless, and today I can fondly say that this certainly hasn’t changed, along with my regard that every sunny day is one to be spent outside.

Cornwall is dotted with local businesses and charities who have made it their mission to prove that there is nothing better than being outdoors with your friends and family, and one such charity is the Children’s Sailing Trust (CST). With a determination to create accessible and affordable watersports and

sailing opportunities for young people in Cornwall, there is a wonderful understanding here that physical and mental health are intrinsically linked. Physically, sailing and paddlesports can help strengthen core muscles and improve balance, coordination, and flexibility while improving cardiovascular fitness. Just as important is the mental wellbeing and freedom that getting out on the water provides, reducing levels of stress and anxiety.

The CST team are very aware that learning new skills and achieving personal goals can help to build self-esteem and self-confidence, vital attributes that can have a positive impact on overall wellbeing and attitude, which can be difficult to come across in a life spent indoors. their thoughts on a visit to CST in 2022: “It has been a wonderful experience for our students, improving their mental and physical health, learning about themselves and each other and achieving more than they thought they could, improving self-esteem and confidence.”

With locations on both the Helford River and Trevassack lake, the charity also runs something called CST Experiences –commercial courses and sessions for groups, individuals and families. With every swim, sail and SUP session you purchase, you’ll be helping the Children’s Sailing Trust’s work to create opportunities for kids to get out on the water who wouldn’t otherwise get the chance!

Over in Kessel Quarry, a once successful granite quarry now flooded with spring water, lies another of Cornwall’s hidden outdoor activity centres. In some ways, Kernow Adventure Park feels more like a nature reserve than an activity centre, nestled within a breathtaking 21-acre site just outside of Falmouth, but there is no shortage of fun to be had here. The calmest of crystal-waters makes for a perfect open-water swim, whether a leisurely float or as part of a training schedule. Or, why not explore the lake by paddle board, gliding over the glassy water at your leisure? Watch out for dragonflies flitting across the water’s surface, and as you explore you may well see the strange shapes of submerged trees peer up from the depths.

The E-boats are another fun activity, charged and ready to propel you on a voyage around the lake, but the main attraction is hands down the Aquapark. The chance to jump, splash and slide your way around an impressive inflatable floating obstacle

course isn’t something to be passed up, and with room for up to 40 people why not bring everyone you know for an hour of waterpark fun?

For something a little more fast paced, the Monster Slip and Slide needs little introduction. Just four minutes away from the stunning beaches of Widemouth Bay in Bude, here you’re faced with no less than 360 feet of rad summer fun, open seven days a week. Hop into a ring or launch off on a super-fast body board and soar down to the bottom in uninhibited glee, a feeling some of us have long forgotten!

To go one step further into adrenalinefuelled territory, Hangloose Adventure Eden is the next level when it comes to outdoor fun in Cornwall. Based in the incredible surroundings of the Eden Project in St Austell (a wonderful day out in itself), Hangloose invites you to push your boundaries and take it to the limit with an incredible range of activities. Why not introduce the kids to scaling the walls of the outdoor climbing centre rather than the walls of the house? Or, step it up from the swings at the park and

As well as an incredible collection of outdoor activity centres, Cornwall comes with its own naturally occurring adventure parks, the most obvious being the shining Cornish coastline. Studded with life-guarded and Blue Flag beaches, there’s nothing quite like heading to your favourite stretch of sand, wetsuit on and surfboard under arm for an afternoon well spent in the surf with likeminded swell seekers. If you’re looking to get kitted out for your own salt-water adventure, look no further than Hayle’s Down The Line Surf Shop, home to everything you could possibly need.

As an adult, I now know that Cornwall had doted on me as a child, and I was spoilt for choice with the incredible outdoor playground that it provided everyone who called this place home, whether that be for a week, a month, or a lifetime. Like many Cornish folk, I can happily admit that I have held a fond appreciation for these shining shores since childhood, and this summer I’m determined to get outside and make the most of it, as should you!

Family run, and with a wealth of experience and knowledge of the local area, the Shore Stays team are certainly pros when it comes to holiday letting, with a reputation for taking the best care of their properties and guests.

“The reliable care and attention we give to managing properties on the north coast of Cornwall is second to none because it really is a true passion of ours,” says Sara. “As a family run business, we offer years of experience and take a personal approach to caring for each property for total peace of mind.

“We appreciate the time and care that has gone into creating each beautiful property, and it’s our mission to protect it for the owners while sharing it with others who will appreciate it just as much as they do. Whether it’s for long periods of time or just a few weeks, owners just need to let us know the times of year they would like to share their property and we do the rest. We make regular visits to each house and cover full inspections at changeover as standard, fixing any issues ourselves before new visitors arrive, as we have a super maintenance team on call 24/7!”

Shore Stays' top priority is to establish a great relationship with their owners so they can feel 100% confident that their home is being well cared for; from the finer details such as cleaning products and lightbulbs right through to re-decoration. “We’re proud to use local contractor Terry Harris & Sons, and our maintenance team all live locally, so are contactable 24 hours a day for both owners and guests alike,” adds Sara.

The team's property portfolio has a simple recurring theme; coastal locations that are close to the beach and offer a little slice of comfortable luxury. So, if you have a luxury property by the sea and are interested in letting your home with Shore Stays, why not get in touch with the team today? They would love to hear from you!.

Secluded but well connected, the high-spec eco-lodges are perfect for indulgent breaks in an incredible setting. Accessed via a private entrance, the last few remaining lodges are surrounded by stunning coastal landscaping. Each lodge enjoys an expansive decking area, prioritising outdoor living as much as the carefully designed interiors. Your holiday home will become a treasured escape for you and your loved ones, and can also provide an ongoing source of income for years to come.

Created for you to earn more

You could earn up to £36,500 a year from your Gwel an Mor holiday home when you’re not using it yourself, a figure that’s based on the average gross income of owners at Gwel an Mor in 2022, before annual running cost deductions. This number will vary, depending

on the date of purchase, demand and number of bookings during the season, and Cove UK cannot guarantee it. However, it makes for interesting reading for those hoping to see a return on their investment! Gwel’s Premier Letting service provides everything you need to earn a good income from your holiday home, with no impact on your time. The experienced team takes care of all the advertising, holiday admin and cleaning to ensure your beautiful holiday home is returned to you exactly as you left it.

Holiday home buyers can save up to 25% on the value of their property by exploring a number of tax benefits that are available to holiday home owners. Again, this cannot be guaranteed, and is an estimation by tax specialists, STax. It’s also subject to HMRC, however it’s reassuring to know that there are savings there to be made! Owners are provided with air conditioning, underfloor heating and a cosy wood-burning stove. Top-of-the-range appliances such as Neff hide and slide ovens, a combi oven and microwave, induction hob and wine fridge provide modern conveniences and little luxuries such as a whirlpool bath with plasma TV screen, in-built Sonos sound system, mood lighting and sunken hot tub make each stay feel like an indulgent getaway.

Created for experiences

When you become an Owner at Gwel an Mor, you get unlimited access to the lesserknown gems of this stunning county. So, it’s

time to take off your holidaymaker hat and live like a Cornish local, immersing yourself in the true, unspoilt magic of your beloved home-from-home.

Gwel an Mor is situated in a beautiful location, with easy access to Portreath beach, Tehidy Woods Country Park and the Clay Trails. Combining the awesome north Cornwall coast with mining heritage sights and pretty woodlands, it is an ideal location to experience the natural beauty of Cornwall. If you want to venture further afield, you will find St Ives, Truro, Penzance and Newquay all within a 30 to 40-minute drive, with plenty of villages, gardens and coastline to explore in between.

The resort itself also offers plenty of distraction with an indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, a full range of wellbeing and beauty treatments available from the spa, a golf course, fishing lake, sensory playpark, indoor play area and climbing walls, plus a wildlife centre offering regular animal experiences. There is also a bar and restaurant providing delicious food with a sea view.

Created for Cornwall

If you’re looking for a more sustainable holiday home solution, Gwel needs to be on your ‘must see’ list. The offer of well-located, stunning holiday homes without reducing the availability of local residential housing is an attractive option for people seeking a second home in the popular county. Buyers will have peace of mind that they won’t be affected by potential second home planning restrictions and premium council tax rates. These luxury properties are of net benefit to the local economy, attracting tourism income, without putting pressure on local services and housing stock.

Newquay also has some fabulous scenic walks and is famous for its surf and beautiful beaches – Porth beach is less than six minutes away. With the added bonus of Cornwall Airport Newquay being a short drive away, life at Fir Hill Park couldn’t be better. If this has stirred your interest then why not take that first step and arrange a viewing?

A LIFETIMEOnce in

One of Cornwall’s most celebrated estates, with a Grade II-listed Georgian manor house set within approximately 233 acres, has come to the market for the first time in 99 years, and for only the second time in its 300-year history, through national property consultancy Carter Jonas.

With a rich heritage dating back to the mining history of Cornwall, The Chyverton Estate’s elegant manor house, originally built in 1730, is surrounded by mature, native woodlands and farmland rich in biodiversity, private tracks and pathways, two lodge houses, a stable block, a walled garden, undulating pasture and a famous cross-country equestrian course. This is truly the stuff of dreams.

The exceptional property is available as a whole or in lots, so whether you want the entire estate package or just a little piece

of paradise, your dream can be catered for. Chyverton House, with its beautiful gardens and swimming pool complex, the stable block, lodge houses, walled garden, equestrian course, pastureland and mature woodland within approximately 160 acres, is the first lot. The second lot, of nearly 73 acres, comprises mature woodland, level pastureland and the remains of a cottage, brimming with romantic potential.

The manor house is built with the classic proportions and timeless appeal of the Georgian era and enjoys an elevated and imposing position overlooking the parkland gardens and surrounding woodland. Its soft red-brick front façade, unusual for a house of this significance within Cornwall, adds a homely appeal to the property, a feeling that continues throughout its interior, which radiates charm and comfort.

LIFESTYLE 24 | CORNWALL LIVING
Carter Jonas is delighted to present a truly exceptional opportunity for those looking to own a little piece of Cornish history.

Extending to approximately 11,000 sq ft, the house was largely remodelled in the mid-1800s and has been sensitively and gently enhanced over recent years. Of particular note is the drawing room, including an 18th-century iron fireplace, much admired by Sir John Betjeman on his many visits to Chyverton. This delightful room at the front of the house also has large French doors opening onto a sun-drenched al-fresco dining area with paths leading down to the swimming pool area, overlooking the ponds.

Chris Anderson, who is leading the sale from the Carter Jonas Truro office, says: “Chyverton Estate really is one of the most enchanting properties the county has to offer; it has a magnetic appeal. The grand, light-filled rooms of the main house are complemented by its surrounding parkland. Magnificent oak and beech trees and beautiful shrubs such as Camellia, Rhododendron and Magnolia encircle the property, naturally preserving its privacy. It is little wonder that this is only the second time in its history that it has come on the market. It is a true haven that has been managed in tune with nature.”

The manor house features six principal bedrooms and a centrally positioned entrance hallway with access to all areas of the house, including the drawing room, kitchen and dining room. The right wing of the property is dominated by an enormous family room, formally used as a billiards room, with an impressive fireplace and surround.

The left wing has been sensitively refurbished to provide a self-contained two-bedroom, twostorey annexe, including a wood-panelled library using early 18th-century oak panelling that originated from Harlyn House, near Padstow. Neo-classical plasterwork on the walls and ceilings is present throughout the house, especially around the open-well staircase with its cast-iron balustrade.

The lower ground floor enjoys independent external access and window wells. These details ensure that this level benefits from extensive natural light. This area, and six unused attic rooms on the second floor, would allow the accommodation to be vastly enhanced without any alterations to the external elevations.

“Chyverton presents a unique opportunity to the market,” Chris adds. “An estate and country house that somehow manages to create a sense of intimacy, one that is befitting of the generations who have lived in and loved every aspect of this wonderful property.”

Located in central Cornwall, Chyverton Estate is within striking distance of the city of Truro. It has excellent access to the county’s north and south coasts, the former being just four miles away (a ten-minute drive), where a variety of watersports, including sailing and surfing, are available. Truro has a range of professional services, employment, retail and leisure opportunities, alongside cultural activities driven by Truro Cathedral and the recently refurbished Hall for Cornwall. The city has a number of private and state schools for all ages and is home to the Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske.

Offered for sale at an asking price of £6M, contact the team at Carter Jonas for all enquiries and any further information on this incredible piece of Cornish history.

OUT THEREAdventure is

Just 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly enjoy a unique climate, warmed by the Gulf Stream. Nature flourishes here in many different ways, from the sub-tropical beauty of Tresco’s gardens to the wild and untamed landscapes of Bryher, St Agnes and Gugh.

Spending even just a few days on the Isles of Scilly is an experience that you will never forget and there is a raft of experiences just waiting for you – and your four-legged friends!

It comes as no surprise that boats play an important part of life on the Isles of Scilly. They are the best way to get from one island to another and an excellent way to see seals, seabirds and wildlife.

The calm, clear seas around the islands make this the ideal place to practice your watersport skills or to dip a toe in the water for the first time – whether it’s wild swimming, snorkelling, kayaking or paddle boarding. Beachcombing and rock pool safaris are family favourites; from cowrie shells to sea glass, there is always treasure to be found on shore. At low tide, rockpools become mini-aquariums – all you need is a bucket and a keen eye!

If you fancy a tipple, the islands are home to vineyards and even a gin school. For the foodies among you, the bounty of the sea is a given, from fish and chips to fresh lobster. We still haven’t mentioned the miles of coastal paths, spectacular beaches, golf, horse riding, cycling… the list goes on! All these experiences take place in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of the world that you'll ever see.

The islands are famously dog friendly, and pooches are very welcome on Skybus flights or on Scillonian sailings, operated by Isles of Scilly Travel. Skybus departs from Land’s End or Newquay in Cornwall, and from Exeter Airport in Devon, where you can access exclusive VIP perks such as discounted entry to the executive lounge. Or, why not sail along the spectacular Cornish coastline on board Scillonian III from Penzance, passing landmarks including the Minack Theatre and Land’s End on the way?

So, what are you waiting for? Book online at islesofscilly-travel.co.uk!
