Dreaming of Tremaine

Hoteliers and entrepreneurs Lana and Peter de Savary have struck gold again with their latest project: Tremaine Manor. Set amidst the unspoilt beauty of the Cornish countryside in a private world all its own, Tremaine has undergone a full refurbishment and we can’t wait for the opening in Easter 2022. Peter de Savary, legendary in the hospitality industry over the last 40 years, came upon Tremaine in 2021 and was instantly drawn to its magical qualities, on which he ponders: “Tremaine exudes history, tranquillity and an abundance of charm. In my quieter moments, I dream of Tremaine” Having just completed a program of upgrade and refurbishment to provide delightful, comprehensive and characterful accommodations in the substantial manor itself, the 12 traditional cottages, the shepherds hut, and the gardens and grounds, guests and their dogs will be delighted by the doggy welcome pack to greet them on arrival to this pooch friendly haven. For more information call 01503 220333 or visit www.tremainemanor.com

Stay prepared with Adder Packs When out wandering the dunes and moors with our four-legged pals, the last thing we expect to come across is a startled adder. With adder bites in dogs on the rise, it could pay to be prepared whenever out walking with your furry friend. All adder bites require urgent veterinary treatment, but your immediate actions, should the worst happen, can make all the difference to your dog’s recovery. The Adder Pack provides you with all the necessary information and equipment needed

to administer this immediate first aid. There is also a clear and concise, ‘what to do’ guide to help you through the period between the time of the bite and your arrival at the vets. So, with the Adder Pack in your pocket, you can rest easy on your outdoors adventures with the kit that all dog owners should have, but hopefully you’ll never need! The paw-fect historical experience

Located in Helston’s historic market buildings, the Cornish Museum of Life is home to thousands of objects and artefacts that will transport you back in time on a journey through Cornish heritage. Spread over five floors, the museum is free to enter and welcomes the whole family through their doors, including the dog! But make sure to plan ahead and book your visit to this popular attraction. Step inside to find one of the largest Cornish social history collections, from a five-ton cider press to the scene of a 1950’s kitchen. Learn about Helston’s famous inventor, Henry Trengrouse, whose rocket lifesaving apparatus saved thousands of lives; and the Victorian classroom will give the kids a taste of what it was like to learn over one hundred years ago. Combined with Henry the parrot and the hunt for the museum’s smallest object, you won’t want to miss this incredible experience, but don’t forget to book your visit! Made for dogs,

designed for you

We’re a nation of dog lovers and when it comes to going out, we’d much prefer to do it with our furry friends by our side. Trips to the pub, riverside picnics or park-bench coffee breaks; if we can, we’ll take them. But we can’t guarantee they won’t dash across to another family’s picnic and snaffle their sandwiches! This is where the Tetherlead comes into its own. The luxurious leather lead allows you to safely and securely attach your dog to just about anything. The family behind the brand wanted to create products that are unique but will also stand the test of time, using the finest Italian leather and sold brass fittings, all handmade in England. The British designers have created two carefully considered designs. The ‘Oxford’ has brass eyelets that run the length of the lead, the slimline design making the lead perfect for popping in a pocket, whereas the ‘Woodstock’ has brass rings for a more bold and

10 | DOGS LOVE DGS--A5--MAR--2022--COMPOSITE--News & Views--V2.indd 8

eye-catching design. Both the eyelets and the rings can be used to adjust the length of the lead and to tether your dog by unclipping the handle, wrapping it around an object and attaching the clip to the eyelet or ring at your desired length. The Tetherleads team didn’t stop there, they have also produced a matching range of leather collars and slip collars using the same high quality, durable materials. To see the beautiful collection for yourself, be sure to visit the website. And whilst you’re there, quote ‘DLC20’ – an exclusive discount for Cornwall Living readers, giving you 20% off your order! The importance

of 24-hour care It always pays to think about what might happen to your pet in an out-of-hours emergency, be that at night or during the weekend. It makes sense, therefore, to find a surgery that covers out-of-hours care, so that you have peace of mind that whatever happens, and whenever it occurs, your pet will be well looked after. It’s also worth bearing in mind whether the surgery you’re registered with provides 24-hour nursing care, so that your poorly pet isn’t left frightened and alone. Kernow Vets is one example of a veterinary team in Cornwall that provides the assurance of round-the-clock care, meaning that whether you’re home or away, you’ll be able to rest assured that they’ll be there for you and your pet. Dedicated and professional, Kernow Vets offer animal owners a comprehensive service, and with a Pet Health Club that covers everything you’re likely to need, from a free micro chip and twice-yearly health checks, to a monthly worming plan and much, much more, it’s well worth giving the team a call and guaranteeing you and your pet’s future peace of mind.

Your next adventure awaits In a prime position to explore this unspoilt area of west Cornwall, Polurrian on the Lizard boasts 12 acres of mature gardens, the South West Coast Path on its doorstep and its own sandy beach Polurrian Cove, located just a short stroll down from the hotel. Dogs are welcomed at the Polurrian with open arms, both in the hotel and in most of the luxurious self-catering villas, which gives guests the freedom to do what they want with the benefits of using the hotel’s facilities.

fter a gentle climb out of Bude, the walk becomes easy and flat. There are no stiles along the route, although kissing gates will prevent access for some prams and wheelchairs. The section along the Bude canal is very accessible for wheelchairs and more details about it can be found on the Cornwall Council website. An all-terrain ‘Tramper’ mobility scooter is available for hire from Whalesborough Farm, for use while exploring the farm trails and canal path. Further information and booking details can be found at www.countrysidemobility.org. This walk takes in the coastal path with lovely sea views, before turning in-land across farmland to join the canal towpath back to Bude. An excellent walk for children, if the weather’s good take a picnic and watch the boats and kayaks on the canal, or why not hire one yourself and take your picnic upstream? A fine route in spring, when there are ducklings and even cygnets on the canal, the hedges are full of primroses and celandines, and warblers sing in the blossom-covered bushes. It is great in autumn too, when pipits and buntings find rich pickings in the stubble of the newly harvested fields.

bowl. Many of the one, two and three-bed beach residences managed by St Michaels are available for pet stays, with deep balconies and lots of floorspace for a lazy evening stretch to follow a day of sniffing out beaches and coast paths! Recent changes to Cornwall beach restrictions for pets have made daily walks a breeze too, with high season walks on popular beaches (including Gylly beach) permitted before 10am and after 6pm, and there are no restrictions in place between October and April. When your furry friend has explored all of Gylly Beach, try Helford Passage for walks along the river’s beaches and fields, and maybe even a visit to Trebah Garden. Slightly further afield lies Kennack Sands on the Lizard peninsula, one of the few year-round dog-friendly beaches. Make sure you head to the second beach along, which is clearly sign posted and a perfect sandy beach for dogs to explore off the lead! assing two beaches and two pubs, both of which are dog friendly, this is certainly a walk to be enjoyed with your pooch by your side. Starting in St Just – a small town with a rich mining heritage and England’s most westerly town – here you’ll find your way to the Coast Path at Kenidjack Castle, the site of an Iron Age fort, to travel on around Cape Cornwall where the Atlantic Ocean meets the English Channel, and on to Porth Nanven, affectionately known as ‘Dinosaur Egg Beach’. One of the first stops along the way is Tregeseal, the site of a number of important archaeological monuments, including a stone circle known as the Nine Maidens, a Neolithic chambered cairn, and a number of holed stones around the granite outcrop at Carn Kenidjack. Find your way past the ruins of Kenidjack Castle to a quarry track and down into the valley until eventually you’re following the Coast Path along to Cape Cornwall. Before long the astonishing view from Cape Cornwall will take your breath away. Known as ‘Kilgoodh Ust’ in Cornish, meaning ‘goose back of St Just’, the cape is one of two in Britain, and is formed by two great bodies of water, Cape Cornwall marking the point where the Atlantic current divides. An important breeding ground for seabirds,

and the site of many a shipwreck, the view is certainly worth the walk. Looping back to the beginning, you’ll find your way along the cliff and down onto the road in Cot Valley, before crossing the stream by the footbridge and passing the ruins of Wheal Rose. Together you can find a detour to ‘Dinosaur Egg Beach’, famed for the large round boulders scattered along the shore which are now protected by law. Stay safe

DOGS

Photographer Alison Hou se

OUT THERE! We want to make sure you’ve got all the information and advice you need to get the best out of Cornwall, and keep yourself and your pooch safe at the same time.

W

e reveal the South West Coast Path Association’s top tips for staying safe whilst exploring Cornwall’s coastal paths with your furry friend in tow. The first is to always keep your dog in sight and use a lead if their recall isn’t always reliable. This will help to keep your dog away from cliff edges, which are often loose and home to rabbits! There are also some stretches of the coast path that lie within areas of mining heritage, and whilst these are fascinating stretches to explore, be aware that there may be uncapped mine shafts hidden in the undergrowth near the path. If you come across sheep, cows, horses or other animals grazing in fields alongside the coast path, irrespective of how well trained your dog is, you should always clip on a short lead – it’s much safer for everybody. If you feel threatened by cattle, then the SWCP recommends unclipping the lead so that you can escape separately. Even if your dog has great recall or you’re using a lead, you never know when your furry friend is likely to bolt off in excitement. With that in mind, it’s worth ensuring yours has a name tag and is microchipped. Even a temporary name tag with your contact details on it can help other walkers get in touch, should they come across your escaped hound. The next tip is to not let your dog run up to other people uninvited. Not everybody likes dogs, and there have been incidents where walkers have stepped out of the way of dogs with fatal consequences. One thing we can say for sure that nobody likes, is dog poop left on the path. Not only does it give dog-owners everywhere a bad name, it can it pass on diseases to people and farm animals, so be sure to ‘bag it and bin it’ wherever you are.

 Murphy enjoying the

view, at Compass Point, Bude

Other advice includes winding the windows down in your car should you need to leave your dog inside for a short time, and to keep an eye out for the white, waxy lumps of palm oil that sometimes wash up on beaches. These can be harmful if eaten by dogs, so if you see yours munching on something near the shoreline, it’s certainly worth intervening. FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT WWW.SOUTHWESTCOASTPATH.ORG.UK

lickers Doghouse in Padstow is delighted to have won Britain’s Favourite Independent Pet Shop 2021. Lisa Hope, who owns the store, says: “On behalf of all the staff at Slickers Doghouse, we would like to say an enormous thank you to everyone out there who nominated us for this award run by Beco – Britain’s leading sustainable pet brand. We are blown away by the number of people who took the time to vote for us, and are motivated to continue growing our offering and expertise to offer our customers the very best in dog care.” So, what’s new for this year? Now stocking a variety of Innopet all-terrain dog strollers and bike trailers, Slickers invites you to buy or hire so you can take your elderly or injured dogs out on your coastal walks where everyone can enjoy stress-free family days out in comfort. Alongside an expansion in their Slickers dog slings (keep your eyes out for the new colours!), the new organic cotton mesh Doggie Bags provide all you need to look stylish on the beach this year. Continuing to work on reducing their carbon footprint still further, the Slickers team are choosing more and more plastic free packaging alternatives, with a focus on buying British. Watch out for their pick and mix treats, where you can bring your own container, buy one of theirs or fill a paper treat bag, the choice is yours. What’s more, their eco toy section has expanded, so why not pay a visit and let your

pooch choose their next cuddle buddy from Cora the Crab or maybe Sidney the Shark if they are feeling particularly feisty? Don’t forget to get safe for summer, as we all know our little fur buddies can overheat very quickly when the sun comes out, so it pays to get fitted for a Britishmade Cool Coat which is proven to reduce your dog’s temperature to normal within five to ten minutes, even on the hottest of days. With all this and more on offer, make sure to go and get pampered at Slickers Doghouse Padstow, they can’t wait to see you. FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT WWW.SLICKERSDOGHOUSE.CO.UK
