to the June edition of Cornwall Living!

urrounded by the sea, it’s this ocean paradise that’s very much shaped Cornwall both in terms of industry and pleasure. From the fishermen who earn their living from its myriad species of fish and shellfish, to those that derive pleasure from being at play either on or beneath the waves, there’s no doubt that the sea has played a unique part in putting Cornwall on the map. With world-class reef and beach breaks at every turn, it’s no wonder that the Duchy’s surfing scene is such a strong one. Rosie Cattrell met Chris Brown, owner of Global Boarders, to find out how they’re inspiring and teaching the next generation of surfers and outdoor enthusiasts (from page 25). For those who prefer to appreciate Cornwall from dry land, despair not. We’ve been catching up with some great foodie destinations where you can sample the fruits of the sea and the fields. Trevaskis Farm’s on-site farm shop (page 68) boasts a traditional butchery and a way of shopping that is both affordable and sustainable; chef-patron of restaurant Kota Kai, Jude Kereama (page 74) talks of the importance of seasonality when it comes to cooking; and over at Beach Farm Café, Polzeath (page 76) eating is laid-back with a side of sea view! So, whether you are a water babe or a land lover, let Cornwall Living guide you to your next Cornish adventure…

Here comes Summer Sun, sea and sand sums up this beautiful place we call home, where relaxed, easy-towear style is timeless. It is this comfortable and affordable style that you’ll find at Whitegoose(&Co) in Wadebridge.

Come join the team at ‘The Boatshed’, the home of Paddle Cornwall SUP and Encounter Cornwall located in the picturesque village of Golant, just two miles outside of Fowey, for one of their awardwinning kayak tours or SUP (stand-up paddle board) sessions and launch onto the stunning River Fowey estuary. Their daily kayak excursions are perfect for those wishing to explore the waterways. Choose between their low tide Wildlife and Waterfronts tour and paddle towards Fowey, or one of their Creeks and Backwaters tour, heading further upstream. For the more adventurous, why not try a stand-up paddle board session under the watchful eye of their fully qualified and insured instructors. With a variety of

session types from beginners to advanced, they will have the perfect one just for you. If you would like to utilise your existing paddle skills, why not head out under your own steam with a kayak hire? You can choose between a half or full-day session in a single or double kayak. For the more advanced paddler they have their own Canadian canoes. And new for this year is their Mega SUP session, guaranteed fun for all the family, with either hire or supervised sessions available – no one is staying dry! Everything you need at Estuary Textiles

The award-winning

Cornish Waves book A popular choice for those who can’t decide on the spectacular one-off wave for their home, the newest limitededition hardback Cornish Waves book published by Waves Gallery in Porthleven has been a true hit, even winning a Gorsedh Kernow Holyer – a Gof Publishers award for 2021. Signed and numbered to 1000, inside you’ll find some of Mike’s finest work to date, including the hugely popular shots Cornish Kiss and Cornish Dreams.

Available now in paperback, another interesting feature of the book is the amazing story of a charity paddle to the Isles of Scilly for Surfers Against Sewage, complete with more Cornish photographic adventures, chasing

storms and capturing those rare special moments caught in the waves. For more information call 01326 368369 or visit www.wavesgallery.co.uk

Take a tour Stocking an extensive collection of wonderful material for both home, interior projects and those of the textile artist or student, Estuary Textiles’ collection spans many decades – from the 1850s to the 2020s – and also encompasses world textiles. They stock, amongst other pieces, handwoven kutnu silk from the Middle East, 1960s tweeds, turn-of-the-century patchwork from America and classic British out-of-print designs. This makes for a totally unique and highly desirable range of fabrics. The team are very happy to work with customers to sell the exact cut of fabric needed for their projects. Sustainability, minimal waste and economical purchases are all part of the shop ethos, so next time you’re in Wadebridge, make sure to pop in to Estuary Textiles at 5 Polmorla Road, PL27 7ND. For more information visit estuarytextiles

through time Offering a fascinating insight into Cornwall’s rich heritage, the Museum of Cornish Life building was originally designed as Helston’s market house in 1837. Today, it retains the original sloping floor, which adds to the authenticity of your visit as you journey back in time. In front of the museum is a cannon, salvaged from the wreck of the frigate HMS Anson, which foundered off Loe Bar in 1807. Around 100 sailors’ lives were lost, inspiring Henry Trengrouse to invent the ‘Rocket’ lifesaving apparatus, which can be found inside the museum.

Join the Saint’s Way Trek

Ever fancied taking part in a charity trek without leaving Cornwall? Now’s your chance, thanks to Cornwall Hospice Care’s newly launched ‘The Saint’s Way Trek’. Taking place on the weekend of 10th and 11th September, there’ll be an opportunity to camp half way on the Saturday night. The adventure starts at beautiful Padstow Church and day one will include a 16-mile walk to Mena Farm Campsite just outside Lanivet. “Here we’ll unwind round the firepit and enjoy a range of foods provided by onsite caterers,” explains Event Director Amy Lewis. “On Sunday the walk takes you to the windswept heights of Helman Tor where on a clear day, you can see both the north and south coasts of Cornwall. It’s then down to Golant and on to Readymoney Cove in Fowey for medal celebrations.” Shuttle buses will take entrants from the charity’s furniture store in Holmbush, St Austell to the start and overnight bags

and tents will be waiting at the campsite for trekkers on the Saturday afternoon. “Breakfast and a packed lunch will be provided on the Sunday so all people need to do is bring food for the Saturday leg and money to buy supper in the evening. Did I mention Lanivet has a top-class fish and chip shop and a great pub as well?” Funds raised will go directly to providing the end-of-life care the charity provides at its two hospices, Mount Edgcumbe in St Austell and St Julia’s in Hayle. “What better way to help us make a difference to our patients than by enjoying one of Cornwall’s most iconic walking routes with family and friends and at such a lovely time of year.” For more information call 01726 66868 (option 3) or visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk/ events/saintswaytrek

Preserving the beauty of

Step into The Little Gin Shack

the sea

Kurt Jackson’s latest exhibition highlights the need to protect our oceans. Mermaids’ Tears – showing at the award-winning Jackson Foundation artspace in St Just – is built around the world-renowned artist’s efforts to address the blight of plastic in the ocean, drawing attention to the resin pellets or nurdles from plastic manufacturing (mermaids’ tears) that pollute the environment. The focal point is a beautiful tapestry by Dovecot Studios, who worked with Kurt Jackson to achieve a sensitive balance of colour and texture. The contrast between the fishing rope, nurdles and wool powerfully illustrates the incursion of plastics into the natural environment. Alongside paintings rallying against the damage we are doing are others revealing the natural beauty of unspoilt beaches and the joy of pristine tidelines and powerful seas. The Jackson Foundation is open Tuesday – Saturday. For more information call 01736 787638 or visit www.jacksonfoundationgallery.com

For gin-lovers and curious connoisseurs alike, The Little Gin Shack warmly invites all to come in and take a seat in the beautiful premises that has been established at 35 Molesworth Street, Wadebridge since their relocation in October 2020. With room for 26 in total, there’s plenty of space to find a place to perch while you take your pick from the store’s incredible offering of just under 180 gins. With spirits from both Cornwall and around the world, you’ll truly be spoilt for choice, and any gin expert is sure to come across an undiscovered label to sample. When it comes to choosing your tipple, the Gin Shack doesn’t have a menu. Instead, says Neil: “Our fully trained staff prefer to talk to you about your preferences, and provide you with complimentary samples to try before you decide. You can also book a fantastic Gin Sampling session – just contact us for details!”

This range is complemented by a series of Cornish rums, vodkas, brandy, wines and bottled beers and ciders, which can be enjoyed on site alongside one of the newly introduced cheese and charcuterie platters, or as a purchase to take home. With such an impressive collection of carefully chosen products, a trip to The Little Gin Shack is not one you’ll want to rush. So, pull up a seat, explore the range and enjoy the experience! A love of great design

Eleanor Bowmer is a talented British artist and print designer based in Manchester. The team at Newlyn Maids fell in love with her bright colours and bold print designs at the Spring Fair at the NEC, Birmingham, and excitedly placed an order! Eleanor’s business began after she quit her job as a textile designer and opened a shop on ‘notonthehighstreet’, where she started selling her prints and tea towels. From there, she built a successful brand that continues to thrive, and Newlyn Maids is now a proud stockist of Eleanor’s beautiful homewares. You can find her range of tea towels, storage jars, aprons, baking utensils and mugs with her fabulous iconic Miami Shells and Dalmation prints online (website below) and in both the St Ives and Newlyn stores. Head to the Newlyn Maids website or visit one of the stores, and get 20% off the full Eleanor Bowmer collection. Roast on the coast

The glorious Victorian architecture of the Falmouth Hotel is the first thing that strikes you, this along with its beautifully manicured lawns that face the ocean. As well as offering luxury accommodation in its 71 hotel rooms and two- and three-bedroom stays in its stunning new lodges, the hotel is also much sought-after for its foodie offering. Open to nonresidents, the Lounge Bar affords laid-back dining with a menu comprising of light lunches and snacks, as well as indulgent Cornish cream teas, all served with a side of sea view. For more formal dining, the Castle Beach Restaurant is undoubtedly one of the best located in the area overlooking the beach for which it is named. Alongside an à la carte menu that features dishes created from the best local produce, the traditional Sunday roasts are a highlight. Choose from a selection of pot-roast beef, succulent pork or tasty chicken – and there is always a vegetarian option – all served with giant fluffy Yorkshire puddings.

But don’t just take our word for it, this is what a recent diner had to say: “Had a really lovely Sunday lunch today; one of the best we have had. African-born Dreya Bennett came to Cornwall at the tender age of nine, and ever since she has had an affinity with the sea. Previously a professional kite surfer, Dreya has a fascination with the ocean, inspired by its reflections, colour and translucent quality, which shows in her beautiful fused glass artwork. While studying at Falmouth Art College, Dreya fell in love with glass fusion before going on to study Architectural Stained Glass at Swansea. You’ll find Dreya’s gallery on the Killacourts, overlooking Towan beach in Newquay, where her work – which reflects the ocean and the Cornish way of life – can be viewed. As well as the wonderful collection of pieces to be found in her gallery, Dreya also undertakes bespoke commissions both in Cornwall and further afield. Stay safe SUP-ing this summer

The stand-up paddle boarding industry has been growing at a rapid rate for many years now, and more recently, when the Covid pandemic struck, it grew even more. It seems that everybody wants to give this exciting new sport a try. Inevitably with more people taking to the water, the need for good advice and education to keep them safe is needed. This is where SUP Standards come in; it is dedicated to ensuring that the rising sport of stand-up paddle boarding is as safe an environment as possible for those taking to the water. The aim is to provide consistent safety and paddling standards and information for SUP. SUP Standards is a valuable resource for both the recreational paddler and the trained professional. One of the unique things about SUP Standards is that there are countryspecific sections allowing stand up paddlers to check for any particular standards, safety and reference links, in their own country. The SUP Standards committee is a dedicated team of experts

throughout the world who regularly contribute on a wide range of topics. The committee members all have a specific area of expertise that they focus on, this could be anything from SUP safety, environment, equipment to mental health to foiling. SUP Standards is currently offering the chance to win an online SUP Wise Intensive course – with tips, techniques and videos sponsored by ASI, the world’s leader in SUP education – the first step to becoming a SUP instructor. Capturing the

energy of Cornwall

A crisp, clear day on the coastal path near Port Isaac, the sea a deep turquoise and the cliffs topped with lush green grass; this is the inspiration for ‘Where Kestrels Pause’ (pictured), a colourful, energetic painting in acrylics by Falmouth based artist, Chloe Woods. Chloe loves to explore Cornwall’s harbours and coastline with a camera and sketchbook in hand. Returning to her home studio, she translates the sketches, photographs and memories into larger, contemporary pieces that are perfect for bringing the colour and energy of Cornwall into your home. You can meet Chloe and see her latest work up close at Coast Colour Canvas Gallery from 4th to 10th June. Alternatively, why not pay a visit to Chloe’s website and discover more about her work? Slickers loves Dicky Bag!

As dog-walking counties go, Cornwall has to be up there with the very best in the UK. Miles of rolling countryside, bridleways and footpaths between coasts, with patches of woodland and forestry, not to mention the seemingly endless miles of the South West Coast Path, all combine to make the county paradise not just for humans hoping to make the most of the great outdoors, but their furry friends, too. However, part and parcel of owning a dog is ensuring that you pick up after them. After all, there’s nothing more annoying than coating the soles of your shoes in un-scooped poop that somebody before you left lying on the path! This is where the Dicky Bag comes in – designed to enable you to travel responsibly with your dog, without parading poop around like a trophy as you search in vain for a bin. The award-winning and stylish neoprene Dicky Bag is lightweight, airtight, washable and, crucially, leak proof. It can also be attached to you or your dog, and stores

those nasty knotted plastic bags until you find a suitable bin in which to discard it. With a range of accessories, including Dicky Discs to keep your bag smelling fresh, plus an extended range of other bags, from treat pouches to bum bags designed to carry small and larger items including keys, phones, tablets, even a packed lunch, accessorising for your daily dog walks has never been easier with Dicky Bag. Check out the range on the Slickers Doghouse website, or better still, pop into the store on Padstow’s quayside! For more information call 07917 005071 or visit www.slickersdoghouse.co.uk

Create an outdoor ‘room’ Wouldn’t it be great if the view from your balcony was not obscured by its surrounding handrail arrangement? Well, a solution can be found at Kestrel Specialist Handrail Systems. They can supply and fit what’s known as a ‘base fixed channel system’, suitable for mounting into concrete or steel, which alleviates the necessity for the installation of vertical support posts. Customers can choose to have the resulting ‘free-standing’ panels

left completely plain, or topped off with a variety of handrails if desired. Either way, the resultant look is both smart and easy to maintain, which means you can sit back and enjoy the view from a space that is sheltered, secure and perfect for outdoor dining this summer. o step outside our front door and feel the warm promise of spring on our skin as the days grow lighter and the sun more familiar is to remember the joy of living in the paradise that many of us are lucky enough to call home. Painted in greens, blues and sandy golds, and edged with cliffs embellished with heath and thrift overlooking the Atlantic ocean, Cornwall not only makes for a wonderfully inspiring place to be, but holds the key to real adventure in what we consider to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. In the spirit of immersing ourselves in the watery wilds of Cornwall this spring and summer, we thought it best to get an insight from someone who not only harbours a passion for the thrill of the Cornish coast, but has made a career of 17 years from it. From nurturing surf newbies on their first waves at Praa Sands and Gwithian Towans and coaching advanced salt-water thrill seekers, to exploring the coastline on a coasteering exploration around Mousehole, Chris Brown is a man at the very heart of outdoor adventure. Leading a team of over 12 surf and coasteering coaches, Chris is at the centre of a company that invites all to seek their very own outdoor adventure; Global Boarders.

“My first memories of the outdoors were spent on the crowded beaches of Southendon-Sea,” reminisces Chris. “Like many families from the southeast, Cornwall was a yearly family holiday destination and I recall catching my first waves at Gwithian on a partially snapped polystyrene bodyboard in the mid 90s. My parents made the brave move to leave Essex and relocate to Cornwall. Ever since then I’ve been drawn to the energy and natural beauty that can only be experienced in the great outdoors. As a first-generation surfer in my family, it took until the age of 16 before I learnt how to surf and two years later, whilst balancing education, I qualified as a lifeguard and surf coach and never looked back. In 2005 Global Boarders was formed and 17 years later my passion to coach surfing has never been stronger.” Originally a mobile surf school run by Chris and his best friend Steve, Global Boarders’ original ethos was to travel Cornwall’s coastline in the search of the best waves for their clients to surf, operating out of a van with surfboards strapped to the roof. “We did this all year round and it was a common site to see us in the winter months battling the Cornish weather whilst wrestling the surfboards on and off the roof,” explains Chris. “We realised this was where our passion lay, and 17 years later best friends became business partners and we’ve grown the business to proudly have beach front bases at two of Cornwall’s best surfing beaches; Gwithian and Praa Sands.”

 ABOVE On the hunt for adventure  BELOW An expedition below the cliffs and into the sea

Open year round, Chris and Steve’s early roots are still embraced, and Global Boarders remains one of the only surf schools in Cornwall who proudly stay open all through the winter to embrace the elements with their brave customers. Having managed and coached the GB National Surf Team from 2015 to 2019, Chris found himself in the driving seat of some incredible opportunities that would lead him around the world to the shores of California, The Azores and Japan. On his return, Chris’ newfound skills and experience found their place within the Global Boarders team at the head of an incredible group of hand-picked instructors and guides, each chosen for their individual skills and experiences: “My role as head coach allows me to proudly lead a team of wonderful coaches and great friends in delivering two amazing activities in surfing and coasteering across some of the most spectacular locations in Cornwall. We believe that we have the best team of instructors and guides possible, and to provide an unrivalled customer service we have hand-picked each individual to fit a certain roll within our coaching team. Ultimately, whether you’re local or just paying a visit, our aim is to leave you with a lasting memory of our special county and ensure it’s one of the highlights of your holiday.” From primary school teachers who work with the kid’s groups during the school holidays, to more senior coaches who support some of Global Boarders older customers, many of the team have been around for ten or more seasons, so they really know what they’re doing! What’s more, Chris and his team see many budding adventure seekers return to them year after year with the knowledge that the coach they’ve had previously is more than likely

there to coach them again: “We find that most return customers when booking their session will ask whether they can be taught by the coach or guide they had during their previous session. As a company, we put great emphasis on retaining our staff, with many being with us for at least five years, so the customer and coach relationships can progress with many students working with the same coach for years. We also renew our equipment every two years, which means our customers always enjoy warm wetsuits and a great selection of beginner and advanced surfboards.” Striving to be a fully inclusive operator for outdoor activities, and with a desire to promote the endless health and wellbeing benefits of being in the Cornish sea, Global Boarders are the lead surf school provider in Cornwall for working with local schools, encouraging local children to access the incredible outdoor environment that awaits them whilst promoting ocean safety and awareness. Not only this, the team are also proud to run a not-for-profit surf club for local children from beginner to elite level, many of which have gone on to represent England at international events. Their work with the military charity Surf Action and the Wahine Project UK (a year-round initiative for young girls to learn how to surf, look after the ocean, each other and themselves) only goes to show how dedicated Chris and the team are to the local community and the art of outdoor adventure.

With three bedrooms, it has been lovingly and stylishly refurbished to the highest of standards, without detracting from the original character that makes it so special. Slate flagstone floors and original fireplaces, for instance, are still very much in evidence on the ground floor, as are the exposed beams overhead in the kitchen, which itself has been refitted with gorgeous tongue-and-groove cabinetry and a natural wood work surface, cementing the ‘house in the country’ feel that has become so appealing over the last two years. The open-plan living/dining room is completed with a woodburner, which keeps things cosy during the cooler months. When the sun’s out, you can swap the warmth of the stove for that of the sun as you while away your afternoons dining al fresco in the private rear garden, with its blend of gravel, patio, lawn and mature borders. Within walking distance of the amenities of St Maybn, 1 Churchtown Cottage is perfect for those in search of a peaceful life in the country. That said, it is also only a short drive from the towns and villages that populate the banks of the Camel Estuary, from the foodie hubs of Padstow and Wadebridge, to

the sailing waters of Rock and the surfing waves of Polzeath, all connected by the beautiful South West Coast Path. In short, for anybody relocating to the Duchy who wishes to immerse themselves in the very best the Cornish lifestyle has to offer, 1 Churchtown Cottage is an opportunity not to be missed. In conversation with Rohrs and Rowe, we ask what it is about the Camel Estuary that continues to draw buyers in search of their dream home.  ABOVE It's easy to see the appeal

 BELOW Great Engollan Farmhouse

W

inding its way gently in land, the Camel Estuary is a walkers’ paradise, a wildlife haven, a must-visit for cyclists, and home to some of the most esteemed chefs and restaurateurs in Cornwall. No wonder then, that the area has become a beacon of promise to those seeking a tonic to an increasingly busy and stressful lifestyle, providing a sense of ocean-aired freedom that so many of us have found ourselves craving in the wake of events over the past two years. Especially in light of the pandemic that’s still very much

fresh in our minds, more homeowners than ever have found themselves looking to their own four walls, examining their lifestyles and re-assessing what’s important. Perhaps nobody is more familiar with this trend than Martyn Rohrs and Matthew Rowe, founders of awardwinning Cornish estate agents, Rohrs & Rowe, who sell some of the Camel Estuary area’s most exceptional and sought-after property. Before we get into those however, let’s dive a little deeper into what makes this stretch of Cornwall so alluring. If days spent under the power of sail are your idea of zen, then the Camel Estuary is home to some of the finest sailing waters in the UK, particularly in Rock. Championing the philosophy and traditions of good seamanship, keen racing and a happy family atmosphere, Rock Sailing Club welcomes new members with open arms, providing the perfect environment to spend time with likeminded seagoers, a place to make life-long friends and share in the joy of time spent on the water. Perhaps, instead, you wish to take a guided tour of the waterways, sitting back as you watch the coastline ebb past? If so, there are a number of tour agencies providing trips designed to show you the very best of what the sheltered waters here have to offer, including

wildlife spotting and even fishing, perfect for catching your supper before heading home and firing up the grill. Alternatively, if you prefer solid ground beneath your feet, then the Camel Estuary provides some of the finest cycling you’ll find in Cornwall, namely the Camel Trail, which offers cyclists of all ages and abilities the chance to take an easy ride. There are plenty of places to enjoy lunch too, all with incredible views and spots from which to watch the local wildlife. Of course, for some, nothing beats a bucket and spade day on the beach, in which case, one of the famed ‘Seven Bays’, centred around the small village of St Merryn, will provide you with all the sun, sand and sea you could ask for. Whichever way in which you choose to spend your days, the Cornish sea air is sure to sharpen your appetite, and where better to be than in the culinary capital of Cornwall, Padstow? Renowned for the collection of celebrity owned restaurants, including those of Rick Stein and Paul Ainsworth, with Nathan Outlaw’s offering available further along the coast, there’s reason that foodies flock to Padstow every year! Drawing on the region’s abundance of fresh, seasonal produce, daily caught seafood and locally reared meats, the changing menus of the restaurants around the estuary are an allure in themselves. But it isn’t just the landscape, coastline and lifestyle that draw buyers to the Camel Estuary.

The stamp of property here is exceptional, as is evident in the list of available, coming soon and recently sold homes on the books of Rohrs and Rowe. Take Trevoseen, for example; a five/ six-bedroom coastal home with outstanding sea views across the entirety of Trevone Bay (one of the aforementioned Seven Bays). Striking and exceptionally spacious, the house has been designed to maximise the stunning, uninterrupted sea views. Set out over three floors, the accommodation and living spaces provide ample room to spread out, with floor-to-ceiling windows opening out onto the terrace and providing the ocean views beyond. With beautifully set-out gardens, a broad sun terrace and an excellent, recently built summer house at the bottom of the garden that’s perfect for entertaining, Trevoseen is a prime example of the quality buyers have come to expect from property in the Padstow area. Another contrasting yet excellent example, is Great Engollan Farm. This handsome, detached coastal farmhouse boasts five bedrooms in the main residence. Add to this a one-bedroom integral annexe called The Loft, as well as an additional one-bedroom separate cottage within the grounds called The Nook, and the flexible accommodation at Great Engollan lends itself to visitors, dependent family members, or even the potential for additional income via holiday lettings. With parking for numerous cars, a detached double garage, and being less than two miles from the nearest beach, Porthcothan Bay, Great Engollan provides the space and lifestyle that two years of lockdowns have left so many searching for. Rohrs & Rowe have numerous other properties either on, or coming to the market in the Camel Estuary area over the course of the summer, so be sure to get in contact and register your details to find out more.

S

ituated along Sea Road in Carlyon Bay, one of Cornwall’s most highly regarded addresses, this new development of six luxury apartments, over three floors, is expected to be completed by September 2022. With uninterrupted south sea views from Gribbin Head around to Black Head, this prestigious and high-quality new development enjoys a location that is hugely convenient for the nearby golf course, Carlyon Bay Hotel, coast path, beach and the nearby town of St Austell, that also benefits from a direct rail link to London Paddington. The historic and picturesque harbourside village of Charlestown (a regular location for BBC’s Poldark and the film The Eagle has Landed), is just over a mile away and the beaches of Duporth, Porthpean and Pentewan are all within a very short drive. The worldclass and award-winning attraction, Eden Project, is located to the north of St Austell with The Lost Gardens of Heligan being found to the west of the town. Just six miles or so along the coast is the beautifully timeless and historic waterside town of Fowey, with its wonderful atmosphere, popular sailing and watersports, all complemented by an eclectic array of boutiques and restaurants. Configured on three storeys, this beautiful building offers a residence of timeless splendour. Two apartments on each floor each boast an open-plan living area with a separate utility room and wet room; three double bedrooms (one en-suite) and a kitchen replete with quartz tops and high-end appliances. The whole complex has then been wrapped within landscaped gardens, including a communal sitting out area, pond and lawn. With holiday letting, short-term letting and full-time occupancy permitted, coupled with underfloor heating and a 10-year building warranty everything has been thoroughly considered. Although the development won’t be available for habitation until early autumn, the apartments have proved such a pull that every one has been sold in advance, leading to the conclusion that the strength of the

coastal Cornish market combined with a legacy design has set a new standard in apartment architectural style.

HEART AND HOME A

With their fingers truly on the pulse, we ask the Kitchen Kit team for their insights into the latest kitchen trends for 2022.

s the centre of our day-to-day lives at home, a place for us to come together to cook, eat, and meet with friends, the kitchen is the beating heart of the home for many of us. With this in mind, it only makes sense that it not only looks the part, but functions in exactly the way we need it to so that life, at least in the kitchen, feels effortless. In the spirit of dream kitchens for 2022, we’ve been in touch with the team over at Kitchen Kit Ltd for their professional insights into the styles and trends we can expect to see for the coming year. Let there be light Kitchens of old were known for their stark, almost industrial lighting. While it’s good to be able to see what you’re cooking, as the modern kitchen has morphed into a sociable space rather than just a food prep area the trend in lighting has become subtler. If you think about it, a kitchen is likely to be the most expensive room in the house and so deserves lighting that ticks both the function and aesthetic boxes. Of course, task lighting is essential but this can be mixed with statement pendants, wall lights or recessed strips. Dimmable and colour changing lights will also be fashionable for 2022.

Under your feet Flooring is an important consideration in a kitchen space, and can take up to 7% of your budget so it needs to fit for purpose. There is going to be a lot of foot traffic in a kitchen, so your floor will need to handle daily wear and tear. Kitchen floors are also likely to be prone to spills so whichever flooring you choose it needs to be easy to clean. Vinyl has been a popular choice of kitchen floor for decades. Modern, engineered vinyl is available as planks which are incredibly versatile, waterproof and cost-effective. Tiles are also very durable and are available in numerous patterns and colours. A hardwood floor is a more traditional option, but will need to be treated to ensure a waterproof finish. Reclaimed wood flooring and sustainable hardwoods are also an environmentally friendly option.

Pull up a seat Once you’ve planned out your dream kitchen, it’s important to consider where you will sit to eat. Whether that be at a breakfast bar or around a table, chairs or stools need to be comfortable, functional and stylish and your dining table needs to sit and work well within the space. Is your dining table somewhere that

LIFESTYLE

 MAIN Smooth, sleek surfaces

the whole family will gather every day or is it a special occasion table? This will affect whether you opt for a durable, easy-to-clean finish or something with more of a wow factor. Will it double up as a desk? In which case, it will need to be hard-wearing and have enough space to accommodate home workers and homework doers! Shape is also key – a round or oval table will take up less space while rectangular tables look great with bench seating. On the surface When it comes to kitchen surfaces this year, stone is definitely going to figure high on the trend list. It’s both practical, stylish and hard wearing, and should be the go-to surface for any budding pastry chef as it stays nice and cold. Marble offers unique veining so you know your worktop will be one of a kind. Quartz is an excellent option if you are looking for a wider colour choice, and for a Cornish kitchen granite is perfect as it will also be in keeping with the local vernacular. Stone worktops aren’t the cheapest option, but they are a wise investment due to their combination of function and longevity.

Don’t fly off the handle! Handleless kitchens will remain highly sought-after in 2022. You might be asking yourself, what exactly is a handless kitchen and why would I benefit from one? A true handless kitchen, such as Kitchen Kit’s ranges from Nobilia and Ballerina will have grooves in the actual carcasses of the kitchens that allow you to open the doors from either the top or the side. The benefits are many, not least the minimalist look you will achieve due to the smooth unbroken lines of the doors. A handleless kitchen can also take up less space, often with the effect of making a small kitchen look bigger and less cluttered, and there are no knobs or handles to clean or get caught up on!

s a family-run Cornish business, HBH Woolacotts take social responsibility seriously and are committed to minimising and reducing their impact on the environment. As such, the team have been busy steering the company in a greener direction, and we’ve taken a look at the admirable steps they’ve taken to reach their eco goals. In-house recycling HBH Woolacotts have their own recycling plant which, following investments over the last 10 years, currently includes three bailers and compacting machines. The machines mean that all cardboard, polystyrene and soft plastic can be processed to create high-quality bails which are then sent to recycling plants for further processing to ultimately be re-used.

Eco-friendly infrastructure Over the last 10 years HBH Woolacotts have invested in their shops and buildings to make them more sustainable, incorporating things like large solar panel installations in Plymouth and Bude with plans for more in the very near future. Other recent investments include a brand-new paperless delivery system in 2021 which saves paper, fuel and time as well as giving customers a much more efficient service. Product recycling and disposal HBH Woolacotts work with Collectrical, a Plymouth based Community Interest Company, to manage Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). Collectrical have a zerolandfill policy and specialise in refurbishing and recycling old and unwanted electrical products. While a lot of old products are beyond repair and are stripped down for parts and scrap, many can be refurbished and are then donated to vulnerable people and families within the local community.

OUT OF

THIN AIR With a new government grant available, we talk to renewable heating experts at GreenGenUK about the benefits of an air source heat pump.

W

ith recent rises in electricity and gas prices, and more set for later in the year, we are all looking for ways of how to save on our heating and hot water bills. The government has announced that they are to provide homeowners with a £5,000 grant towards the upfront costs of replacing their fossil fuel boiler with an air source heat pump through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, with the aim to reduce the UK’s carbon emissions, our dependency on fossil fuels and exposure to global price hikes. This form of renewable heating is both better for the environment and cheaper to run, but how does it work? Surely, you can’t produce heat out of thin air? Actually, it appears you can. A fan draws air through the unit, which keeps an internal refrigerant gas cooler than the external air temperature. When the air passes over the gas its temperature rises; the refrigerant gas is then compressed and the refrigeration process causes an upgrade in the heat, which then passes through a heat exchanger and is distributed around your property. An air source heat pump is capable of providing both space heating and hot water and the process of upgrading the heat energy stored in the air means these heat pumps can

be more than 400% efficient. Add to that the fact that an air source heat pump can reduce the average heating bill by as much as 50% and it becomes a very attractive proposition. One homeowner from Polperro, whose property spans three storeys, is ahead of the curve and is already reaping the benefits of the installation of a Mitsubishi Ecodan 11.2kW Heat Pump and had this to say of GreenGenUK: "We have been very impressed with the way Shaun, George and Ben have worked over the past three days, transforming our house from an oil heated dinosaur to an electrically heated house courtesy of an air source heat pump. The radiators feel, if anything, a little warmer than they were when heated by oil which was a pleasant surprise.” So, what are you waiting for? Now is a great time to swap to a more efficient heating system or replace an ageing boiler ahead of winter.

THE FABRIC

of time

Estuary Textiles is a small shop in Wadebridge stocking a wide range of materials and fabrics from across the decades and around the world.

I

nside this textile emporium you will find a collection of antique quilts, including those stitched in America during the Depression Era from feedsack cottons, as well as those made closer to home by Victorian ladies a century and a half ago, from silk and velvet. There is an extensive range of 19th century French home-loomed linen sheets and nightshirts, too; the sheets are of a beautiful quality and wonderful to work with. The nightshirts, meanwhile, make superb frocks – good to know with summer just around the corner! Materials collected from around the world add a global influence to the Wadebridge shop. These are transformed into cushions and lampshades by a member of the team based in Padstow. Lampshades can be made from Kuba cloth which is sourced from the Congo – woven from raffia, dyed with mud pigments and decoratively stitched with cowries, making for a wonderful, textural addition to any home. Cushions, meanwhile, have been made with traditionally woven Kutnu silk from Turkey, edged in pleated fabric from the Hill Tribes of Northern Vietnam. As well as all of this you’ll find brightly coloured furnishing materials featuring

striking compositions from the post-war women designers who came to prominence in the Festival of Britain era, plus beautiful patterns by artists who were commissioned to design fabrics in the early 1960s. More contemporary designs, meanwhile, are chosen for the quality of both fabric and illustrative style. Estuary Textiles welcomes a range of customers as wide as the items it stocks, from young people just learning to sew, to fashion and textile students from local colleges, to keen stitchers and professional makers and artists. For those who want to create their own items, Estuary offers a custom cutting service, minimising waste and expense by selling cuts of material that are precisely the size and shape you require. There is also an extensive selection of threads and remnants for textile art, and the team will happily work with you to curate the selection that meets both your needs and your budget. Whatever your project, you are bound to find something to suit at Estuary Textiles, so be sure to pop in and see what’s in store!

HOME

o t k c a b g n i v i G CORNWALL

Whether you have a home in Cornwall that you use yourself or you offer to others, there’s a way you can support a much-loved local charity.

E

ver wondered how you can give back to the Cornish community that offers you such a warm a welcome when you visit? Well, next time you’re updating your holiday home think of donating your preloved items to Cornwall Hospice Care. The charity cares for and supports terminally ill adults and their families during the most difficult of times at its two hospices – St Julia’s in Hayle and Mount Edgcumbe in St Austell – and through its community service projects. One of the ways the charity raises funds is by selling on donated furniture through its network of charity shops across the county. Donating that sun-faded sofa or last season’s rug will help fund vital end-of-life and bereavement services for the community of Cornwall. You’ll also be helping to protect the area by finding new homes for the dining table that your family has outgrown or the lamp that doesn’t match the new theme, rather than sending them to landfill. The charity offers a free collection service that you can book online. Donations just need to be in a good enough condition to sell on and have any required fire safety labels. Without these the charity can’t legally sell them and would have to pay to dispose of the items.

SUMMER IS COMING!

Preparations are well under way at John Bray Cornish Holidays for the busy summer season ahead.

T

DID YOU KNOW? On 12th April, the John Bray Cornish Holidays team raised over £1,000 to support Port Isaac Breakwaters by rowing 164km – the equivalent distance of Land’s End to Port Isaac – in just 9 hours, on rowing machines outside of their office!

DISCOVER MORE… If you are thinking of letting for the first time or changing agents, the John Bray Cornish Holidays New Property team would be delighted to give you an honest appraisal of your property’s rental potential, as well as advice on their property management options. Call them today on 01208 863206.

his summer, Cornwall looks set to be another major player in the list of top UK holiday destinations. With the crystal-clear waters and clean sandy beaches of Cornwall’s coastline regarded by many as being on a par with the Mediterranean, its unsurprising that John Bray Cornish Holidays is still seeing incredible demand for staycations, with occupancy for the peak weeks already over 80%. At John Bray Cornish Holidays they have been busy preparing for the season ahead, as well as actively looking to add new properties to their portfolio. Jess Holman, General Manager, explains: “As an agency, our ethos is to provide our property owners with unrivalled service, taking any hassle out of holiday letting. From taking meter readings to helping guests work appliances, our local team go above and beyond to provide an extra level of care, managing all of the operational complexities involved in running a holiday home, so our owners don’t have to.” She continues: “Ensuring we have a strong team in place to facilitate this is fundamental, so we are delighted to have welcomed a wealth of new locally based staff to join our maintenance, housekeeping and owner relations teams in our Rock and Port Isaac offices – strengthening our already impressive

service offering. Our team has also been carrying out a wealth of jobs to ensure our properties are in premium condition for the months ahead. Preparing properties like this will help facilitate smooth, problem-free holidays for our guests.” However, at John Bray Cornish Holidays, the preparations go beyond the physical tasks ‘on the ground’. Now part of the Sykes Cottages family, owners benefit from the best of both worlds – a locally based knowledgeable team, combined with the resources of a national company, including dedicated teams analysing the market and trends, intuitive pricing systems and an eight-figure marketing budget! This combination means properties let with John Bray Cornish Holidays are in the best position for maximum bookings and income. So, whether you are looking to let your holiday home for just a few weeks a year, or are aiming to gain maximum bookings to reach your full income potential, John Bray Cornish Holidays would love to hear from you.

Sound too good to be true? Well, it’s not with Gwel an Mor’s designer eco-lodges. Situated just a 15-minute walk from the sandy shores of Portreath Beach, Gwel an Mor is the jewel in Cornwall’s coastal crown. The cobbled streets of picturesque St Ives are just a stone’s throw away, as is Cornwall’s small but perfectly formed capital city, Truro. And of course there are beaches aplenty; some of the county’s finest stretches of sand are just a short drive away, including Godrevy, Porthtowan and Fistral. However, with resort facilities such as archery, tennis, golf, fishing and a wellbeing spa, it’s a wonder how owners manage to peel themselves away. Gwel an Mor’s eco-lodges are no less impressive. Exquisitely designed, each stunning retreat boasts a generous array of state-of-the-art designer features, from atmospheric mood lighting, woodburners

and instantaneous hot-water taps, to sliding doors onto a sun deck and a plasma TV at the foot of the bath. The pièce de résistance has to be the outdoor hot tub – the perfect spot to luxuriate under a starry sky. The benefits of owners letting their lodge are undeniable. Open 52 weeks a year, just 32 letting breaks can cover running costs, letting management fees, housekeeping services, hot tub cleans and generate a potential income of £21,000. The cherry on top? A fully managed premier letting service from Gwel an Mor itself. It’s safe to say Gwel an Mor’s five-star retreat is an extremely tempting option for those who crave the luxury holiday lifestyle. TAKEN CARE OF St Ives based holiday lettings agent launches into spring with a fresh, new look!

ABOVE  St Ives is where it all began

A

fter 22 years in the holiday industry and ten years spent running Escape to St Ives holiday letting agency, owners Louise and John Bryan felt it was time for a change – the creation of a new brand that reflects not only where they’ve come from, but where they are heading to. Well known for their exceptional housekeeping standards, attention to detail and personal touch, this family run business began with only a few properties. Today, customers can choose from over 100 properties, ranging from penthouse apartments overlooking St Ives harbour, to picturesque cottages and larger townhouses with stunning sea views. And the portfolio is growing… “We are always on the lookout for beautiful holiday homes to put on our books,” says Louise, “so that we can keep our loyal customer base engaged and ensure perfect holiday experiences year on year.” Recently, however, due to the increasing popularity of Cornwall as a holiday

destination and St Ives, in particular, Escape to St Ives have been encouraged to search slightly further afield from its base. “With an increasing number of properties coming into the holiday property market from beyond our usual territory, it got us thinking about where we might be in another ten years’ time.” Of course, it’s never an easy task – to transition from a well-established and loved brand into a new one – however Louise and John felt that the time was right, and so the brand-new name, Cornish Escapes, is a fittingly natural evolution, reflecting the company’s roots and the future it is mapping out for itself. As John puts it: “We’ve enjoyed organic growth over the past ten years, but planning ahead, it’s inevitable that we will be looking to new horizons and expanding further into Cornwall. It’s really exciting to be evolving and moving our business forward with this new brand.” Like so many businesses within the travel and tourism sector, the Bryans’ business didn’t escape the impact of Covid,

particularly the first wave. “It was a really challenging time,” says Louise, who talks about the period with mixed emotion. “We were all pushed well outside of our comfort zones but we pulled together. It also made us update some of our own systems and processes, and we are operating even more efficiently now.” Reinvesting back into the business is an important part of the Bryans’ philosophy; they really do want the business to go from strength to strength over the coming years. They see its value in providing employment in the local area – not just to their core team, but the local businesses that support them, too. What’s more, they hope that their two children – Connor and Chloe – will one day become a big part of the company’s ongoing success in the future. Connor himself is very excited by the development of the company and has been closely involved in the creation of the new brand: “I’ve really enjoyed being a part of the whole rebranding process. I believe that this new look puts us exactly where we want to be, both now and in the future.” That said, whilst their fresh new look

symbolises an exciting new chapter for the company as ‘Cornish Escapes’, the team, values and excellent service that have, for a decade, underpinned the company’s success and made them exceptionally popular with visitors and owners, remains very much the same. As a very hands-on, family run business, the Bryans and their close-knit team of 13 take immense pride in delivering an excellent service. All of the housekeeping services are managed in-house with individual checks carried out between bookings. Available 24 hours a day, the team are always on standby for calls from owners and visitors alike. “The friendly team are efficient and organised and nothing is too much trouble,” says one owner. “Their knowledge and experience are invaluable when setting up a holiday cottage and they offer the full package, including the best cleaning service ever!” Visitors, too, are never short of praise for the team, who are repeatedly hailed as friendly, helpful and always on hand, providing peace of mind when staying with Cornish Escapes. No surprise then that with their new name and look now launching, with decades of experience in the industry and such rave reviews flooding in from clients past and present, the Bryans themselves have their own peace of mind as they embark on the next phase of their journey. With a company mantra that says ‘Relax, it’s all taken care of’, if you’re about to plan your next escape to beautiful Cornwall, or are thinking about renting your Cornish retreat, be sure to visit the new Cornish Escapes website to find out more.

FOOD YARDS,

By reconnecting us with our food, Trevaskis Farm provides a sustainable solution for those seeking to shop ‘local’.

DISCOVER MORE If you’re planning a summer of barbeque feasting, the butchers at Trevaskis Farm can help. Be it steaks cut to order, or ready-to-go barbeque boxes containing all the essentials with discount value, you’ll find everything you need to cook up a storm..

DID YOU KNOW? Trevaskis Farm Shop is open every day, 8am to 8pm, perfect if you’re looking for a way in which to ‘opt out’ of the oft-unsustainable supermarket sweep!

ow under the captaincy of brother and sister, Giles and Serena Eustice, Trevaskis Farm is famed for its restaurant, for offering families the chance to immerse themselves in the ‘farm park’ experience, and now, for its on-site farm shop. At the core of the business is a determination to achieve food yards, not miles, but it goes deeper than that. Via the farm shop and butcher’s counter, Trevaskis Farm provides visitors with a viable alternative to the supermarket, reconnecting them with food that has, in many cases, been growing only minutes before purchase. There is a refined focus on ‘local’, too, not only in terms of the produce on the shelves, nor the meat on the butcher’s counter, but in terms of the money spent here and ensuring it’s retained within the local economy. “We specialise in what we do really well,” says Giles, talking about the 100-plus various crops that are grown on-site. “But we’re really keen to share that wealth out through to our producers and let them do what they do really well, too.” On the butcher’s counter, which is led by longtime Head Butcher and master of his craft, Peter Davis, Giles explains that the approach is very much the same as that of the wider farm; to remove the disconnected relationship that, as a society, we have tended towards in recent decades. “Our butchery is very traditional, the kind of which is increasingly rare nowadays. Here, you’ll see meat in its true splendour, cuts on the bone, and what we want to encourage is for visitors to communicate with the friendly

team behind the counter and learn about the products they’re buying. If you come in and talk to us, chat through what you want to do, you’ll be amazed at what you can learn. It’s not an intimidating environment here.” On the counter, you’ll find the native South Devon Breed beef – a product that has a huge following and on which Trevaskis Farm has been able to hang its hat. You'll also find British Lop pork, a rare breed for whom Giles chairs the society that’s dedicated to protecting its lineage. In fact, the Trevaskis drove goes back in the family for generations, and anybody who’s tried it, be it in the restaurant or from the butcher’s counter, will understand why it’s garnered such a following among discerning Cornish foodies! In short, Trevaskis Farm is the embodiment of what more and more families have been searching for in recent times – a way in which to shop sustainably, affordably and, perhaps most importantly, in a way that supports the farmers, producers and makers that underpin Cornwall’s culinary spirit.

Introducing Mainbrace: evoking, in a bottle, the very essence of the sea.

DID YOU KNOW? Mainbrace has also recently announced a partnership with Saskia Tidey and Freya Black, an Olympic sailing duo who will be competing at the next Olympic Games.

M

ainbrace is a family-owned spirits brand based in Helford Passage, Cornwall. The idea for Mainbrace was born on a summer’s day, where a father and his sons were watching the local gig rowers celebrate a win after a race. Inspired by their surroundings and the spirit of courage, teamwork and friendship, they decided to bottle the moment by creating their own Cornish spirits company. As a brand based in Cornwall, the sea is at the heart of everything Mainbrace does, inspiring the brand’s range of spirits, which include Mainbrace Premium Golden Rum, Mainbrace Navy Strength Rum, and the recently launched Mainbrace Cornish Dry Gin. When asked about the brand’s ethos, Richard Haigh, Co-Founder of Mainbrace, commented: “When launching Mainbrace Premium Golden Rum, we really wanted to put a modern spin on the traditional maritime aspect of rum to attract a new contemporary audience into the category. In doing so, we aim to evoke the essence of the sea and ethos of maritime life with every sip, encouraging people to come together to celebrate their victories, no matter how big or small.” Unsurprisingly, the name Mainbrace itself hails from maritime traditions, born from the naval phrase ‘splice the mainbrace’. In the days of sail, the main mast of a ship was steadied, or braced, with a thick rope called the mainbrace. Due to its importance, it was

often targeted by enemy fire in the heat of a battle, meaning that a brave team of sailors had to repair it by splicing the rope back together to save the ship. As a reward for successfully achieving this titanic task, the captain would order the ship’s purser to issue a double ration (or tot) of rum or gin to the brave team as a toast to victory. Today, the phrase ‘splice the mainbrace’ has inevitably become a naval euphemism for a celebration and is always accompanied by a toast to ‘the Queen – God bless her!’. The naval connections don’t stop there for Mainbrace, who continue to work with sustainable, transparent suppliers such as Flexi-Hex packaging, which allows the brand to contribute towards improving the health of the oceans. This year, Mainbrace will be supporting Clean Ocean Sailing, a charity that was founded with the aim of cleaning up the coasts and oceans sustainably under sail and raising awareness about ocean plastics.

FRUITS OF

THE GRILL

At Heart, Smoke & Soal, the mission is simple: to transform every client’s unique outdoor space. ABOVE  Food is always better al fresco! RIGHT  Gear, rubs, spices – everything you need to make the most of your new barbeque

H

eart, Smoke & Soal understand that outdoor cooking means something different to everyone. Some are cooking only for their family, while others are catering for all of their friends. What can also make a difference, is the kind of food you like to prepare. It could be that, in your family, you have a pizza night once a week, in which case a purpose-built, wood-fired oven from Alfa Forni or DeliVita could be just the kit you need to bring that authentic taste of Italy into your garden. For others, nothing beats the savoury scent of food sizzling on the grill as you stand at the centre of the party, apron on and drink to hand, serving up a veritable feast to your guests. Let’s say you’ve decided to go for a traditional barbeque-style set-up. If the convenience of gas is more your style, then a three, four or five-burner barbeque from BeefEater could be the solution you’re looking for, available freestanding or as a built-in unit. Alternatively, if you’re feeding the masses, then why not consider a complete outdoor kitchen from Fire Magic? Offering a premium range of outdoor kitchens, barbeques and accessories that are the very epitome of outdoor living luxury, with grills, pizza ovens and a whole range of other appliances to completely customise your outdoor space, Fire Magic promises to take your cooking and entertaining ability to the next level. Perhaps you’re among those who believe there is nothing quite like the smoky flavour of charcoal. If this sounds like you, then let us

introduce you to Primo and welcome you into the fold of ceramic grilling! Ceramic, or ‘Kamado’, style grills are perhaps the most versatile. Their unique heat and moisture retention properties make them the equipment of choice for outdoor cooks who want the option to grill, bake, roast and smoke, across an entire spectrum of temperatures, without the need for different appliances. They’re incredibly efficient too, in fact, at temperatures of 150°F, you can cook for hours on end without the need to refuel! Even once you’ve settled on your appliances, you will only have scratched the surface of what Heart, Smoke & Soal can offer as, both online and in-store, there is a whole plethora of accessories available to help raise your outdoor dining game. This means that whether you left your tongs out in the rain last winter and need some new utensils, are after a cosy Atlantic Blanket under which to snuggle as the sun sets, or wish to try one of an incredible range of smoking woods, spice blends and rubs to elevate your food to the next level, you’ll find everything you need to transform your garden into a culinary hub for you and those you love this summer.

TASTE OF THE

season

We talk with Jude Kereama, our foodie Guest Editor, about seasonality within Cornwall’s culinary scene.

C

ornwall continues to grow in popularity for its ocean lifestyle that is just a little bit different to the rest of the UK. The pace is gentler, for one, and if you had the choice between the urban surrounds of the city and the shimmering coast of Cornwall, where would you really rather be? But it’s more than that. In the city, the weather doesn’t play as much of a part in the day-to-day lives of those who live there, which in many respects is a good thing. In Cornwall, however, the landscape and life within it is very much guided by the seasons, from the emergence of spring annuals in March, to the russet tinge of the trees in autumn as their leaves make the annual fall. Nowhere is Cornwall’s seasonality more apparent – or, in fact, important – than in the county’s culinary scene. In our latest foodie insight from Jude Kereama, owner and founder of Kota and Kota Kai in Porthleven, and four-time star of the BBC’s Great British Menu, he offers his view on the seasons in Cornwall and how they affect and influence the flourishing foodie scene here.

74 | CORNWALL LIVING

FOODIE

The first thing to say, is that seasonality is a massive factor in all of Jude’s cooking, and therefore an important part of the running of his restaurants. “By cooking with the seasons,” he says, “we are cooking with the freshest ingredients that are at their peak of flavour. It also means that it’s more cost-effective as it will also be plentiful and locally sourced.” Jude, who loves to forage, explains that seasonality has a big impact on the ingredients he can forage from the local landscape, too. “Right now, there are plenty of ingredients to forage such as wild garlic, nettles, sea herbs and seaweeds,” he explains. In fact, spring is Jude’s favourite season. “After a long winter, it is always great to see the change of the season; the colour palate of food turns into a sea of greens, with lots of meats and fish coming into season to match. It also sees the return of asparagus, wild garlic, nettles, watercress, spinach, purple sprouting broccoli, samphire, new potatoes, sea purslane, sorrel and seaweeds.” To match these seasonal vegetables and herbs, Jude draws on meat and fish like lamb, wood pigeon, sea trout, crab, salmon, langoustine, mackerel and all sorts of other seafood. In short, it’s an exciting time to eat at Kota! As a Cornish chef, while Jude loves to forage ingredients where and when he can, he is also able to rely on some amazing suppliers. After all, it’s our producers, farmers and fishermen that underpin Cornwall’s exceptional culinary reputation,

so why wouldn’t he draw on their expertise? “We are so lucky to have so many amazing producers here in Cornwall, and I only ever deal with the best ingredients that they can get at the time.” Like other chefs around Cornwall, Jude and his teams are only ever as good as the ingredients they’re supplied with. “This is why it’s so important that we have a close working relationship with our suppliers to make sure we are all striving to be the best we can be.” When asked about the need to keep food miles down, and whether he thinks more restaurants and chefs around the county are choosing to ‘roll’ with the seasons and use what’s naturally available at any given time of year, Jude’s answer is an interesting one. “We talk about the importance of seasonality, but in reality, there are more than four seasons in a food calendar,” he explains. “Ingredients all peak at different times and so we tend to change ingredients on our menu according to availability.” He compares it to ‘micro-management’ within the seasons, which he says “ensures that we are using the best from our local growers and cutting down our food miles”.

SUSTAINABLY

wild

The ethos at Wild Tipi has always been to create incredible memories and beautiful events immersed in nature.

K

nowing how much being outdoors surrounded by the natural environment had helped them and their children, Wild Tipi founders, Sam and Tim, sought to share this with others. Today, through their incredible tipis, they are able to share the magic of the great outdoors with clients hoping to make their event spectacular. “As adults, we often forget to play,” says Sam, “but you can’t help feeling a sense of wonder and childlike glee whilst staring up at one of these incredible structures! They seem to bring the best out in everyone, and that sense of gathering to feast, talk, laugh, love and enjoy – these are all simple pleasures that make the best of any day. Over the years, Sam, Tim and the team have worked hard to offer products that are mindful of the natural environment. Their tipis have all been purchased from a UK based supplier that works hard to ensure their products are not only the highest quality, but are sustainable, too. All tipi poles are made of sustainably sourced English pine and spruce, and the business is part of the Forestry Stewardship Council, meaning that new trees are planted for each one felled. What’s more, the incredible tipis blend into the natural environment beautifully, and can be put up and taken down with very little trace. The team have also been working to reduce

their carbon footprint, making decisions based on their environmental impact and reducing waste wherever possible. “For example,” says Sam, “last year we switched from single-use cable ties to Velcro ones where possible. We also use natural rope for installations and decorations, and even offer couples a recycling package to help them minimise their wedding waste.” In fact, Sam, Tim and co. are constantly on the lookout for ways in which to further reduce their footprint, which, next year, will include limiting the number of miles they travel out of county. “As the business grows and grows it would be easy to keep expanding further afield,” says Tim, “but we have everything we need right here in Cornwall. If we do go out of county, we will be working hard with our couples to offset our carbon footprint.” In short, if you’re planning your dream wedding in Cornwall and are looking for a team that can not only provide you with a fairytale venue in a location of your choice, but that can do so at minimum cost to the environment, then be sure to contact Wild Tipi!

We explore what has made Porthleven’s The Jewellery Workshop so successful over the last ten years.

A

s The Jewellery Workshop in Porthleven celebrates a decade spent on the popular fishing port’s harbourside, we wonder what it is exactly that has made this emporium of adornments so popular among locals and visitors alike over the course of ten years. The first thing to mention is that Clair and Paul’s reputation around Cornwall is undeniable. They are known throughout the county for crafting beautiful, bespoke pieces of jewellery, bringing designs to life that are each as unique as the customers who commission them. Having now been joined by their son David, they are extremely passionate about what they do, believing that jewellery is so much more than precious stones and metals. In fact, the workshop is underpinned by the understanding that jewellery can be bought, or commissioned, for any number of reasons. Whether it’s a gift for a loved one, or the reimagining of a family heirloom to create something that suits the latest beneficiary, they can help, and it doesn’t matter whether you’re remodelling, resizing, recycling or re-designing, they promise to make your experience one that’s both personal and exciting. “Having someone take the time to understand what you are looking for is just

as important as the making, here at The Jewellery Workshop,” says Paul. “Along with helping customers find new or preloved jewellery, we also love creating unique pieces from family heirlooms – it’s just a lovely way of creating individual pieces that people will cherish for a lifetime.” It’s no surprise then that visitors to Porthleven return to the workshop year after year, in search of the next exciting jewellery piece. Many of them bring with them diamonds and opals, while others come hoping to source the perfect stones to match the design they have in their mind’s eye. Whatever it might be, Clair and Paul have the expertise required to bring those designs to life. “Each family heirloom that we see is endowed with its own emotional values and sentiments, and holds a story that’s led us to this moment,” says Claire. “Every step of the journey is unique to the customer and it’s such a joy to be a part of it.”

THE COLOURS OF

SUMMER Inject some colour into your warm-weather wardrobe with a trip to Maxari.

E

ver since graduating from university and opening their first store in Salcombe, Devon, husband and wife Mike and Vicky have grown their business to encompass five shops across Devon and Cornwall, and feel very fortunate to live and work in this beautiful part of the country. As we move into summer, colour features heavily on the aesthetics of the clothing available at Maxari. This focus on bright, happy colours is geared towards creating a positive and inspiring shopping experience, with clothing arranged in colour blocks to create a vibrant and visually pleasing environment in which to indulge in some retail therapy. This is key as, above all else, Mike and Vicky like to make customers feel welcome and allow them to shop on their own terms, always without any pressure to buy but with friendly help and advice on hand when needed. With two stores here in Cornwall, one in Falmouth and another in Padstow, if you’re thinking it’s time you updated your wardrobe in time for summer, why not pop in, say hello, and see how Maxari can help? Alternatively, if you can’t make it in-store, simply head to the new website and get that summer feeling delivered straight to your door!

RECOGNISE

THE SYMPTOMS

We explore the symptoms of endometriosis with Consultant Gynaecologist, Mr Smith-Walker, at Duchy Hospital.

E

ndometriosis is the presence of endometrial-like tissue that normally lines the womb, in other places. This tissue responds to hormonal stimulation in a cyclical manner, by building up then breaking down and bleeding, however, unlike the tissue that lines the womb, this blood cannot leave the body. Endometriosis is a surprisingly common condition, with around one in ten women in the UK suffering from it. Not everyone with endometriosis will need treatment, or are symptomatic, but for some it can cause debilitating abdominal and pelvic pain, and subfertility. Other symptoms can include increasing pain during or either side of your periods, pain during sex, pain when opening your bowels or passing urine, particularly with your periods. The symptoms of endometriosis can affect your life in many ways, not only the physical pain, but also impacting psychological wellbeing through lack of energy, isolation, relationship or sexual complications and difficulty attending work or social activities. Often, the symptoms of endometriosis do not fit neatly into one box, there can be an overlap of problems and not all of them are necessarily endometriosis. Mr Smith-Walker would encourage keeping a symptom diary, to see if there are any situations, foods, drinks, or particular times that make the symptoms worse (or better), as there have been various diets recommended for managing endometriosis. Look at lifestyle

changes to see if that helps (he recognises that this can be easier said than done!), such as different forms of exercise like stretching/yoga/pilates. What works for others may not work for you, but it can be helpful to look on www.endometriosis-uk. org for tips, and share what you find useful. Previously it would take around seven or eight years from the onset of symptoms to diagnosis, however as endometriosis finally becomes more recognised, it allows for quicker diagnosis. The gold standard for confirmed diagnosis is by laparoscopy; a keyhole operation to assess the pelvis and surrounding tissues for endometriosis. Although this is not always necessary, Mr Smith-Walker advises that there are steps to take to ease the symptoms, which can be very beneficial. Remember, there is no need to suffer in silence. Duchy Hospital's expert Consultant Gynaecologists can discuss any concerns around diagnosing or managing endometriosis, so be sure to give them a call.
