ornwall is awash with creative talent, something which is celebrated annually by Open Studios. Suffering a hiatus during the pandemic, Open Studios has returned stronger than ever with over 300 artists, designers, makers and creators welcoming visitors to their studios from 29th May to 5th June. This countywide festival, which celebrates art in all its forms, is the subject of our cover feature this month (from page 21) as Jilly Easterby talks in-depth to one of the participants, St Ives painter Emma Jeffryes, as well as profiling a selection of other artists who will be opening their studio doors. Cornwall also plays host to talent of a different sort, that of the many celebrated chefs and food producers across the Duchy. This month we are delighted to welcome renowned chef, Jude Kereama as guest editor of our food pages (from page 78), where each issue he will be delving into Cornwall’s culinary scene with recipes, recommendations and more. Now is the time that we look forward to one of the highlights on Cornwall’s event calendar, the Royal Cornwall Show. To be held this year from 9th to 11th June at the showground near Wadebridge, this premier event is a must-visit. We hear more about the exciting events at this year’s show from organisers, Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association (page 70). With so much going on, I would urge you to grab a coffee and your diary and start planning now!

Softening your home with Estuary Textiles With 17 years of experience offering locals and visitors alike the chance to embark on coastal adventures, with all the equipment and facilities you’ll need to make the most of a day on the water, Global Boarders makes its home at Gwithian Towans, with views ‘to the lighthouse’ of Godrevy that inspired Virginia Woolfe to write the novel of the same name. It is one of only a few schools around the country to hold the prestigious ‘Centre of Excellence’ rating, and certainly the only to benefit from close proximity to the popular licensed Sunset Surf Café. With staycations on the rise, Global Boarders are getting ready for another fun packed season in Cornish waters, and surfing is not the only activity on the agenda. Coasteering is one of the fastest growing adventure activities in the UK, and where better to experience it than

As the exclusive provider of coasteering adventures from Mousehole, the charming coastal village with fame as the home of The Mousehole Cat, and with a further base at Praa Sands, you can expect to swim with seals, explore ocean caves, float through gullies and challenge yourself to take on a rock jump ranging from 2ft to 25ft! The only limit to this exciting ocean adventure is your imagination.

Creating handmade soft furnishing goods in Padstow, they also have a selection of contemporary materials chosen for their quality in terms of fabric and design. n store you ll find a personalised custom cutting service, which means you can purchase the precise quantity of fabric that you require for your own project; whether that be a square for a cushion or the exact size required for a DIY lampshade, custom cutting ensures minimal costs and waste.

Visit a garden and show you care

Cornwall Hospice Care’s Open Gardens scheme celebrates its tenth anniversary this year with 15 privately owned venues supporting the Cornish charity. The sites will be opening their gates in support of the end-of-life care provided at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell and St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle. The scheme, which is supported by popular Cornish gardener George Kestell, raised an extraordinary £13,500 last year. This year the gardens opening up to the public extend from South Bosent in Liskeard to Tanglewood near Penzance, with the scheme running until September. Event Organiser Anna Seymour, says the range of gardens provide something for everyone: “Whether you’re a keen gardener or just enjoy visiting other people’s gardens for a wander round, there’s plenty to choose from. You’ll get to meet people with a passion for gardening too and thanks goes to all those who’ve kindly agreed to share their venues. At Boconnoc you’ll be welcomed by the St Austell and District Soroptimists who’ve

chosen us as their charity of the year and will be hosting the event on 29th May.” A brochure featuring all the gardens opening for Cornwall Hospice Care this year is available from all the charity’s shops, Tourist Information Centres and Garden Centres. A digital version is also be available on the charity’s website. “What better and easier way is there to offer support than by visiting a garden or two?” says George Kestell. “Whatever the size the garden may be, the keen visitor will usually find an unusual flower, fascinating feature or glorious view. Then of course for those less worried about the green things, there’s often a delightful range of refreshments and someone to have a natter with.” For more information call 01726 66868 (option 3) or visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk

Sunflowers for Ukraine

raises £10,000

at Rapid Health Test

The war in Ukraine has taken over the airwaves and the plight of the refugees has touched all of our hearts. With an urge to find a way to help, the team at the Jackson Foundation have raised an astonishing £10,000 through the sale of Sunflowers for Ukraine, to support the DEC in providing food, water, shelter, healthcare and protection to those fleeing the conflict in Ukraine. “Thanks to your generosity, together we have managed to sell the complete run of these limited-edition etchings within 46 minutes of them being announced,” explains Kurt. “Sunflowers for Ukraine sold out before we’d even had a chance to announce it. We are truly humbled and thankful, this money

can make a real difference to those affected by the war in Ukraine.” For more information call 01736 787638 or visit www.jacksonfoundationgallery.com

Creative days

At the moment Rapid Health Test’s best selling and cheapest PCR test is one that can be done in the comfort of your own home and can be obtained for £49. A same day test in Falmouth, Truro and Plymouth is also available for Cornwall living readers for just £99.

near St Keverne Pottery really is something everyone can do and those who believe themselves to be ‘not very creative’ are often the best on the day. So says Sally Tully, when talking about the one-, two- and three-day courses that are run at her studio just outside of St Keverne. There you can learn to both throw, hand-build and decorate in clay. Each course is designed so that everyone can make the things that are asked of them – from the complete novice to those who’ve dabbled a bit in the past. Above all else the classes are fun – full of the joy of making and creating with fellow travellers. There are always lots of laughs and conversation and the participants often remain friends, sharing their work in social media groups afterwards.

Dr Stolte and his professionally trained team are fully CQC and UKAS registered, meaning you are in the safest of hands and that you can have a supervised test with reliable results guaranteed. They are also currently the only government approved clinic in Cornwall to offer a 90-minute PCR with Fit-to-Fly Travel Certification for just £129. They also offer an antigen test, the results of which can be obtained within 30 minutes. For more information call 01326281062 or visit www.sallytullyceramics.co.uk

Supply Clouds, proud to support Dive Project Cornwall

Colours of a

Cornish day Landscape artist Amanda Hoskin is able to take something familiar and show it to us as if for the first time, grasping towards the sublime in her efforts to capture her beloved Cornwall. “I endeavour to put my feelings for the landscape into every painting; to give it an energy which I hope the viewer will see,” says Amanda. Her style and approach have changed very little over the years, simply becoming more refined and confident. owever, her work could never be described as formulaic; each painting is infused with emotion and energy. Light itself is very often the subject of Amanda’s work: “Light is what gives a painting life, and I try again and again to capture that ephemerality in the sea, sky and landscape. It is a constant challenge but one that fascinates me.” Her latest exhibition, Colours of a Cornish Day runs from 30th April to 14th May at Lighthouse Gallery in Penzance. Founded and directed by Jonathan Scott, an entrepreneur with a background in teaching, Supply Clouds Next Generation provides education recruiters and supply teachers with an end-to-end CRM system that aims to automate, innovate and simplify the entire process. ith a firm belief that our children are our future, Jonathan is delighted to announce his support for ive roject Cornwall, a not for profit organisation that aims to educate children around the UK on the importance of our marine environment. At the core of Dive Project Cornwall is a competition open to schools around the UK to win the chance for 20 pupils to come to Cornwall and learn to scuba dive. As part of the collaboration, Supply Clouds has purchased 50 ‘Dive Buddy’ sponsorships, which it plans to distribute among its clients. Through the education of hundreds of thousands of children around the UK, as well as millions of adults, Dive Project Cornwall has set itself the goal of eliminating plastic pollution in our oceans. By inspiring the next generation

to become cean nfluencers , it aims to protect the marine environment and save all life in our oceans for many future generations to enjoy. As Dive Buddy sponsors, Supply Clouds’ clients will have access to a suite of content that s been specifically tailored to market their business. It’s an excellent way for businesses to increase awareness in the market, and a superb opportunity to promote their corporate responsibility and sustainability. It’s also a generous way in which for Supply Clouds to say ‘thank you’ to those agencies who have continued to support Jonathan’s vision for the future of the next generation. Stay safe SUP-ing this summer Stand-up paddle boarding is a great way to get out on the water, but there are three tips we should all keep in mind. Firstly, what’s the wind doing? Don’t go out if there is a bit of a breeze! It’s very hard to paddle against the wind, you will get tired and could get blown out to sea or away from your entry point. Secondly, always use a leash. It connects you to your board so, if you

fall off, it won’t get carried away leaving you with a long swim back to shore. Finally, learn how to fall off correctly fall flat, otherwise you could injure yourself. For further tips, and to be in with the chance of winning a ‘Learn to SUP’ online course, visit the SUP Standards website. For more information visit www.supstandards.com or www.academyofsurfing.com

etween Saturday 28th May and Sunday 5th June, 329 artists, designers and makers from across the Duchy will share their studio spaces and artistic practice as they throw open their doors and welcome visitors to participate in Open Studios Cornwall. A profound focus on the healing power of nature and a celebration of place permeates much of the artwork on show during this year’s event, as do the ties that bind us to our immediate surroundings, a response to freedoms curtailed during lockdown. The unprecedented events of the past two years provided a creative stimulus for some participants and St Ives painter, Emma Jeffryes, found herself among them. The experience of her daily hour of lockdown exercise has resulted in a body of work that resonates with such an intensity of colour and overwhelming sense of joy, it is impossible not to be cheered by its boundless positivity. The allure of painting and the everchanging nature of the sea are indelibly inked in Emma’s memory as she recalls the seaside holidays of childhood in Dorset and visits to grandparents in Norfolk. “Because we lived in Hertfordshire, we did that a lot. That’s where the love of the sea came

from because we weren’t living by it,” Emma explains. “That real sense of freedom when swimming in wild water. The absolute beauty of the colours, from muted greys through to the really bright greens. That’s where it all started for me.” Although her passion for painting ran deep, Emma studied Textile Design at Middlesex University. “It never occurred to me that I could make a living from painting so I took the design route to build a career that way,” Emma adds. This led to her moment of epiphany. “A tutor thought I would really like St Ives so I came for a visit and fell in love with it as everyone does. I did lots of painting and even when studying for my Masters at the Royal College of Art, I just couldn’t stay away.” After graduation, Emma instinctively returned and produced ten paintings. “Some friendly people at the Porthminster Café suggested I show my work to the New Craftsman Gallery in Fore Street. Boots Redgrave, who was connected to the Leach Pottery family, said she loved my paintings and took me to have them framed in Penzance. I returned to London to complete some freelance design work

and the gallery sold them all in about two weeks. That was the defining moment the sign that I was destined to live in St Ives and paint. I started selling through galleries and it’s been the same ever since.” Emma has earned a reputation for depicting the Cornish coast using bright colours and bold shapes. She cites her influences as the early 2 th century Fauvists, such as Matisse and Raoul Dufy, who used pure, brilliant colour, applied straight from the tube. Ben Nicholson is another, who distilled visual information into pared-down geometric shapes. Alfred Wallis’s harbours and shipping scenes, painted in the naïve style and David Hockney’s The Arrival of Spring series are also sources of inspiration. “The way Wallis looked at things was fascinating the way he painted and his composition. The way that Hockney draws attention to an object that really interests him, such as a particular tree, by painting

it bright pink. choose different influences as I go along and learn from them. Colour is a big thing,” comments Emma. “If there is something I want to enhance, I do that using strong colour.” And her colours are so intensely vibrant that her paintings sing with joie de vivre. “It is all about boats and beaches,” says Emma with a smile. “Sailing boats, tall ships, fishing vessels. never tire of them and the beauty of their shapes. But I also like to interject a secondary theme to add a point of difference.” What changed in lockdown was that Emma began to see St Ives differently. “In our permitted hour of daily exercise, we walked up the most beautiful lane with wild hedgerows where we live. Each year, I do a solo show at the New Craftsman. It’s where I try to push myself in new directions. Last year’s show was all about the experience of walking up and down that lane. As more flowers appeared in the hedgerows, I painted them: in vases, as a stem in a glass, or all the wildflowers together. t is a Cornish lane, still rooted in St Ives, but it led me to explore a dynamic new colour palette of purples, greens and greys. "Even though these paintings were not typical St Ives compositions, they were so well-received. It made me feel that if I shifted perspective slightly, I could still paint the St Ives I love but in a different way, with the sea as a backdrop, rather than as the main event.” This new-found love of walking has led Emma and her husband to tackle sections of the South West Coast Path.

PREPARE

for summer

With the English summer just around the corner our thoughts turn to how to make the most of this unpredictable season.

L

iving in Cornwall we know that when the sun shines there’s no place like it. Beautiful sea washed coves and golden sand beaches, where the surf rolls in and beach barbeques linger into lazy nights. It’s what attracts many to our county, but every sunny day has a cloudy lining. When the temperature drops it’s just a bit too chilly to remain outdoors, unless you’re engaged in a brisk coastal path walk. We know all this and accept it as part of living in the UK. But cunning nation that we are, there are ways that we’ve developed that allow us to enjoy the great outdoors whilst remaining comfortable at the same time. A way that is less burdensome than applying layer after layer of bulky clothing, what’s more it can also add value to your property at the same time! If your curiosity has been piqued, then look no further than Philip Whear Windows & Conservatories. They’ve been successfully designing and manufacturing quality timber and uPVC conservatories, doors, windows and glass balustrades in Cornwall since 1985. And when we say quality, we

say so with a measure of authority. Just look at some of the beautiful examples that are pictured. Imagine yourself sitting comfortably, whilst the sun retreats, but still being able to enjoy the vista. Then when the summer rain begins, as it often will, just stay exactly where you are. No scurrying around in a panic to collect books and discarded clothing in preparation for a mad dash to shelter, because you’re already there. The pitter patter of rain drops on the roof can clearly be heard but you’re dry and warm, enjoying the carefully curated objects of familiarity with which you've chosen to decorate this safe space, all of which add to your feeling of contentment. It’s like your living room, but instead of the TV you have the natural world to wonder at and appreciate its natural rhythms, boosting your energy and resilience. So how do you turn this dream into a reality? There aren't many providers of conservatories on the scene, some have come and gone, but few have the track record of hilip hear. ne recently satisfied recipient says: “Having had previous work done by

They were not only highly skilled, but also two of the nicest workmen to have around. They worked tidily, e ciently and took obvious pride in their work. They are a credit to the company.” It would seem then that, for many, Philip Whear is certainly the provider of choice. So what are the choices? A bespoke design in either hardwood or painted uPVC. Philip Whear manufactures top quality conservatories at their factory and joinery in Cornwall. All units are manufactured to conform with British Standards and, where toughened glass is required, also carry the BS ‘kitemark’. ppearance is often cited as a defining factor – wooden frames have a natural, traditional charm that can't be found with any other framing material. uPVC by contrast is lower maintenance, and can simply be wiped clean rather than requiring future treatments to maintain its appearance. Perhaps higher on the list of considerations these days is one of impact on the environment. With sustainability at the core of their values, the timber used is SC certified sustainable frican hardwood and their uPVC contains 80% recycled content. All uPVC, glass, timber and reinforcing are recycled.

Whichever your preference, a Philip Whear conservatory will last for a long time and whether that’s timber or uPVC, it will withstand most of what the Cornish weather can throw at it. What we can say for certain is if you are considering a conservatory or glazed extension for your home, it would pay to speak to the experts at Philip Whear to help you make an informed choice and make your aspirations a reality.

lfred Smith & Son has a been furnishers of distinction since 1811. Based in the heart of Penzance, the business has always offered a wide selection of upholstery, beds, dining and bedroom furniture. Their range of mattresses is one of the best offerings in the county, with more than 40 mattresses on display. We hear from Sue Calvert, Director, who explains that: “Lots of people during the pandemic have turned unfortunately to online purchases. I don’t think they necessarily mean to buy online, but more and more people use the web for research and just end up getting drawn in.” In response to this, Alfred Smith & Son has ensured that for those wanting quick delivery there is always a significant choice available from stock. As you explore the showroom, you never quite know what you ll find round the next corner, so it s well worth a visit to be able to see the beds and furnishings up close. The upholstery is particularly eye catching and awash with colour, offering a choice of traditional and modern styles. Each part of the store has been thought out, including the excellent fabric, curtain and blind department, which has its roots firmly ensconced in the building and offers a range of solutions for windows. There’s also a new area for independent living. Here you will

find riser recliners, adjustable beds, walkers, and walking sticks all under one roof, so if you are wanting to stay in your own home, but need a little help to do so we recommend a visit. After all, as Sue says: “Your home is where your heart is. We know that sometimes this kind of furniture can be needed in a hurry so many of the items are in stock and available for same day delivery.” This is a business which is determined to adapt in order to remain the oldest independent furniture retailer in the country and to play its part in keeping en ance s town centre flourishing.

ith the kitchen now considered as the showpiece of a modern home, it will often set the stage for all other design decisions. ith a trend towards open floor plans the kitchen is a place to gather, where families start and end their day, and has to be a combination of form and function. With 14 years' combined experience creating beautiful, bespoke designs alongside managing large projects, friends Tyler and Luke set up the luxury kitchen design company, Wilson Fink, in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. While working together in both national and independent kitchen retailers they had identified that customers were not always given enough time during the design process and wanted to offer a more personal approach. Tyler and Luke's vision was all about offering outstanding build quality alongside modern innovation, underpinned by exceptional value. In order to achieve this Wilson Fink sell quality Italian, German and handmade kitchens. They found that the build quality of these kitchens was superior to anything else on the market and came combined with a uropean design flair that set them apart. Mobilturi kitchens, which are located in southern taly and were one of the first kitchen producers in the country, are made from a solid wood construction

using classic shapes for a timeless appeal. Kuhlmann are one of Germany’s premier kitchen manufacturers who have been producing stylish and sophisticated kitchens for nearly 100 years. Their variable room designs and the excellent range of styles, materials and colours available, means that the only limit to your kitchen is your imagination. These are just a couple of examples of the ranges available from Wilson Fink. Working with such quality products, and combined with their love of designing interesting kitchens, Tyler and Luke are able to offer a range of ideas and inspiration for the beating heart of your home. Listening carefully to their customers’ wants and needs also means that whatever project they are working on receives high acclaim. With incredibly competitive pricing, at a time when other costs are spiralling, Wilson Fink can offer higher quality kitchens for a similar price to those of lesser quality – something which makes perfect kitchen sense!

A peek inside one of St Ives’ most popular bars and hotels, Host, having recently received the ‘Duke Stone’ treatment.

T

he stonemasons of the Lizard peninsula, otherwise known as Duke Stone of Cornwall, have long designed and supplied bespoke natural stone products, outfitting dream homes and businesses throughout the county with practical and naturally beautiful adornments, from granite and quartz worktops to hearths. There’s a certain satisfaction to be taken from achieving your dream space, be it the worktops in your kitchen or the floor and wall-tiles of your bathroom. But knowing where to start when it comes to sourcing the best materials, not to mention installing

them to a standard that lives up to your interior dream, can be tricky. As an example of how Duke Stone of Cornwall can help, we take a look inside the recently opened cocktail bar and boutique hotel, Host – based in the centre of St Ives and destined to become extremely popular. Duke Stone was commissioned to manufacture the bespoke tops for the bar, as well as the unique, luxury vanity suites in the guestrooms. The brief necessitated that the style of these items, and the materials from which they were made, tied in with the wider chic interior style. The clients, we learn, were very specific and focused on the aesthetic, and the ogee edge detail that Duke Stone used on both the bar and the vanity suites, really brought their elegant concept design to life. Working with local businesses and supporting their visions is something Duke Stone of Cornwall loves to do on a daily basis. Especially here in Cornwall, there is a great demand for surfaces, inside and out,

made of the natural stone that s so reflective of the county’s rugged natural environment. It’s on these materials that Duke Stone has built its sterling reputation, working with an extensive range of colours and finishes in granite, quartz, marble and limestone, to give homes and businesses alike precisely the look they want. Each member of the team pays meticulous attention to every little detail throughout the course of a project, displaying unrivalled skill in meeting your requirements, as is evident in the new bar and vanities of Host. But what really stands out, is their focus on customer care; with Duke Stone, you know you’re being well looked after.

Duke Stone of Cornwall are experts in design and manufacture, and well versed when it comes to precisely tailoring your home to your needs, of which Host, St Ives, is a case in point. So, whether it’s a new build, a renovation, or simply the update of a single room, if you’re looking for expert help in bringing your project to life, be sure to give them a call!

BOTH WORLDS Wendron Stoves have found just the thing to combat those ever-increasing energy bills, without compromising on style or comfort.

W

ood stoves remain the heart of many a home here in the south west, providing us with much-needed warmth in the winter months, not to mention a soothing, traditional sense of cosy comfort as we lounge beside them in the living room. However, as energy costs seem to be growing higher and higher, now is the time to consider what we can do to bring them back down, and the team at Wendron Stoves may have found just the thing. Introducing wood pellet stoves, wood burning for the 21st century; turning pellet stoves on and off at the flick of a switch, with totally programmable and thermostatically

controlled operation and the satisfaction of knowing that you are heating your home in an environmentally responsible way using a low carbon fuel, will certainly bring peace of mind. Pellet stoves can come as both boiler models, there to heat the whole house, or as space heating stoves to warm one room and spread a background warmth around the house. They are available in many different forms, ranging from utility boilers in the garage, to stylish living room models, and even cookers in the kitchen to provide all the central heating. The name Klover is synonymous with engineering excellence and their stoves

are known for their reliability and build uality. This family run talian firm use the utmost care and attention to detail in the manufacture of their stoves, which represent the widest range of MCS-accredited pellet stoves in the UK. Manufactured with the UK market in mind, the Smart 120 British Traditional has an enamelled top, handrail and optional hob covers, and is available in cream, red and black, making it perfectly suited to cottage and farmhouse kitchens. Like the original Smart 120, the Traditional model runs at over 9 e ciency and gives 1 . k to water and .2k to room fitting hob covers will reduce the heat to the room and increase the heat to water. The Traditional Smart 12 can be fitted with a top or rear flue and is efra exempt for use in smoke control areas. Wouldn’t it be great if it could burn overnight, if the stove could turn on automatically, or what if it could be programmed so that there was a fire in the fireplace when you woke up at am on a cold winter's morning? Well, all of this is now a reality! Aduro Hybrid is neither a pellet nor a wood-burning stove; as the name indicates, it is a hybrid – a combination. Aduro Hybrid allows you to switch between the best of two worlds, with environmentally friendly heating from wood pellets and the cosy ambience of firewood. You can use Aduro Hybrid as a classic, environmentally friendly wood-burning stove with cosy flames, silent operation and a charm that only real firewood can provide, and you can always heat your home, even when the power is out. With the option of using wood pellets, the hybrid stove offers new opportunities. With a clear conscience, you can let the stove burn overnight and heat up the house when you are not at home. The Aduro Hybrid series represents a new type of wood-burning stove with

a high level of user-friendliness and advanced technology wrapped in a stylish, Nordic design. Winner of the European Business Award for the Environment 2018, the Aduro ybrid reduces the emissions significantly compared to conventional wood-burning stoves; with the pellet function, the CO emission is reduced by 9 , the C emission by 91%, and the dust emission by 9 . Since fuel is added to an duro pellet stove several times every minute, the combustion will always be better than in a traditional wood-burning stove, in which firing happens every other hour. The energy e ciency is also greater. The only thing you need to do is to fill up the stove with wood pellets, and the technology will take care of the rest. A pellet stove can typically burn for around 2 hours on one filling and often for several days without cleaning! t an average cost of p per kwh, wood pellet stoves seem to very much be the future of wood stoves and boilers in the home, and Wendron Stoves are at the forefront of these amazing new technologies, so make sure to get in touch for some specialist advice and a quality, personalised service.

DISCOVER MORE Don’t just take our word for it. James and Mads from Constantine were delighted with the service they received from Wendron Stoves: “The installers were great, very hard workers and surprisingly quiet. They did a brilliant job and were so good cleaning up after themselves. Thanks again for a great job.”

Introducing a sense of sleek, functional style to make the most of the long-awaited sunshine.

I

t’s been a long, dark, wet and windy winter, and we all get a lift from seeing brighter colours with the kick of Vitamin D that natural daylight brings. As lighter days approach, it’s time to look at whether we’re truly making the most of the golden rays that we welcome back into our lives, and particularly, our homes. Throwing the curtains wide open is great, but there are subtler, more customisable solutions which can help you make the most of the beautiful light, without getting a shine across your TV screen, or having the neighbours see that you’re squeezing in watching daytime telly while working from home. With so many options, how do you choose what’s best for you? We asked Lynn and Steve Allen, owners of Shuttercraft in Cornwall, a well-established local business supplying shutters and blinds, what some of the main considerations are, and how they help people make the most of their homes. Lynn says: “The key is listening to the wants and needs of homeowners, and everyone is different. If your house is close to the road, privacy is likely to be a more important factor, or if you’ve got stained glass portions in the upper part of your windows, we want to help you make the most of those. f you re into films, ensuring you can stop the screen glare will be key. It’s all about getting it right for you.”

HOME

Whilst shutters are undoubtedly the most versatile of window coverings, due to the ability to tilt different sections of louvres so you can choose exactly which parts of your windows are covered, there are lots of blind options which are well worth considering, as they can fit with a softer, fabric aesthetic. While the most important thing about your home is how you feel in it, we all like to see our houses looking great from the outside, and the right choices can give your home more ‘kerb appeal’, which can lead to improved house prices, as Steve tells us: “It’s worth thinking about the long-term when you put something new in your windows. It will probably be a long time before you consider changing again. Think how they will look in a few years. One of the key reasons I like working with wooden shutters is that they stand the test of time, they don’t go out of fashion, and they’re really durable, which is why we’re able to offer a ten year guarantee.” Of course, energy costs are rising, making it more expensive to heat and cool your house. What you put in your windows can make a big difference. As Lynn puts it: “It’s about two factors; how well light and heat get through. The more your window coverings move

in a breeze, the less you’re able to create a thermal barrier between your room and the window. In the summer, you can cool a room by reflecting light away from the interior of a room by tilting louvres up, and on those cold winter nights, closing them completely is not only a great way of creating a cosy private space, it keeps the heat in, too.” Lynn and Steve’s Shuttercraft franchise offers you the best of all worlds; a local company, owned and run by this highlytrained, friendly couple, and the reassurance of a national brand guaranteeing the quality of the product and workmanship. Wherever you are in your thoughts on improving your home, why not give them a call? In a free consultation, they talk you through the options available in the comfort of your own home with no pressure, ensuring that when you choose to change, you’ll end up with a solution perfectly tailored for your needs!

any of us are beginning to consider ways in which we might cut back when it comes to our monthly energy bills now that costs are rising, and any dreams of a traditional hot tub may feel further from reach than ever. However, Kernow Springs has something in store that might have you re-considering giving up on your luxury dream. It all started for Kernow Springs when Cornwall-based, former boat builder and father of two, Martin Dean, built a couple of wood fired hot tubs for his garden after sampling their relaxing delights whilst on a family vacation. Working with different wood types has always been second nature to Martin and word rapidly spread of his beautiful back yard creations. Demand then soared to the point where he decided to launch his own company – Kernow Springs – building and supplying eco-friendly wood fired hot tubs to the south west. For centuries, different cultures around the world have recognised the many benefits associated with soaking in a traditional wooden hot tub. The Greeks, the Romans and the Japanese regard it as a ritual – an act

of comforting the body and nourishing the soul. ith the wood fired hot tubs of Kernow Springs, the occasional wiff of smoke and the crackle of the fire is a comforting reminder that the water in your hot tub is being heated by burning carbon neutral ‘coppiced’ wood. Now in collaboration with Water and Stone, to which Kernow Springs supply their beautifully crafted wild spas, it is easier than ever to experience your very own taste of outdoor luxury. Made from 100% natural materials and completely electricity free, Kernow Springs wood fired wild spas are an idyllic off-grid solution that come free of any surprise energy bills, and installation is a breeze. Using his extensive knowledge and experience, Martin is leading the way in the industry of wood fired hot tubs here in the south west. To find out more, be sure to visit the team on their stand at the Cornwall Home & Garden Show, from 30th April to 1st May.

PLAN AN EASY It’s going to be a balance between practicality and aesthetic appeal.

I

n an ideal world your garden should be a space to enjoy and relax in. You don’t want to sit back in your deckchair only to be assailed by a vison of a tangle of plants, that initially cost you a small fortune and are now making a bid for freedom into your neighbours' gardens! What went wrong? It was all going to be so lovely, but unless you have a lot of time on your hands it’s worth aligning your commitment with content. Here are a few tips from ColourFence, that will leave you with a beautiful yet manageable garden rather than a jungle, so that you can concentrate upon family barbeques and al fresco cocktails. Boundaries, sheds and decking One of the quickest ways to make your garden look untidy and unkept is to allow these prominent man-made features to become neglected. Unfortunately, these things are often the costliest and most time consuming to maintain. When buying, always bear this in mind. There are some great low-maintenance options available made from alternative materials that have a long-life expectancy and are easy to care for. They can save you an

awful lot of painting, treatments and repairs. A worthwhile option to consider for fencing is ColourFence, a product that is Australian in origin and is exceedingly popular out there due to its low maintenance and durable nature. This galvanised steel fencing looks surprisingly attractive and natural in a garden environment, and the colours can be chosen to beautifully set-off plants and other features. ColourFence only needs to be hosed down a few times a year to keep it looking brand new – maybe that’s why the Australians allegedly have so much time for barbeques! Lawns If the thought of planting, mowing, weeding, watering and aerating doesn’t fill you with the joys of spring then maybe the traditional, perfectly kept stripy lawn isn’t going to be for you. You can of course replace a lawn with paving, or with gravel areas to reduce garden maintenance. Although, if you aren’t ready to abandon your little patch of green, you could consider a chamomile lawn or a perennial meadow, as these require less upkeep and support more wildlife and flora than

a traditional lawn. Excellent for areas under heavier use, you could consider artificial turf. If you want a natural look, it is worth investing in a good quality product with length and colour variation and a good fitter. t will still need a hose down occasionally to keep it clean and a brush to get rid of debris, but it will save a lot of mowing and raking. If all of the above sounds a little too drastic then you could simply settle for mowing a little less regularly and learning to love those ‘weeds’. The bees, butterflies and other pollinators will thank you for it and your lawn will generally be more resistant to extremes like waterlogging and drought. Flower beds lanting and maintaining flowers and shrubs can be time-consuming, but the time involved in upkeep will depend on the plants you go for. Containers may seem like an easy or low-maintenance option, but it is worth bearing in mind that they dry out

quickly in summer and will require regular feeding for the plants to thrive. Some options to consider are plants like heathers and lavenders which are hardy and flower for a long period, hard fuchsias and geraniums will add colour year after year, while ivy and climbing hydrangea tend to be quite easy to please and will add height and interest. There are also many ferns and ornamental grasses that require little attention and look great in a rockery or in front of a cream-coloured fence or wall. Your garden is supposed to be an enjoyable source of pleasure. You can add to your garden without adding to your time or straying from your style and preferences. It’s just an attitude of mind that may re uire some fine tuning to achieve your vision. f you would like to find out more about how your garden can be low maintenance, then we suggest that you get in touch with ColourFence.

DINING

o c s e al fr The weather’s warming up, summer’s around the corner, time to head outdoors.

I

f like us, your thoughts are turning to the days and months ahead and all that they entails, then one of the joys of being released from winter’s grip is being able to dine outdoors again. Lawns will need to be mowed, borders trimmed and patios washed down in preparation. This is also a moment to take stock and consider if that outdoor dining area that you’ve been utilising for years is starting to look a bit tired. It’s served you well, come rain or shine, but perhaps it’s feeling a bit dated, exhibiting more patched up areas than attractive, clean-laid flagstones. o the chair and table legs, no matter how hard you try to configure the layout, always seem to keep snagging on those annoying raised bits? And worse still, if you haven’t got round to filling in here and there, what about those mini-sink holes that have opened up? You could almost justify getting a few red warning triangles out to warn diners of the potential hazards! If these aren’t enough issues then what about the overall shape – does it still work with the way your garden has matured or have things moved on? Is it time to replace?

We would imagine that most people would opt to replace like-with-like, but we think this is an opportunity to think outside of the box. ecking would have been the obvious alternative a few years back, but attitudes change and although they can add a bit of frontier charm to a property, they are not that practical in reality and require a high degree of on-going maintenance. Possibly concrete then? Too bland. Gravel – let’s not even go there! All of the obvious choices seem to come with their own inherent problems. It was at this point in our quest that coincidently we found ourselves talking about Oltco, which we knew was famed for providing beautiful and practical driveways and parking areas. What we hadn’t considered was that the same technology could be used elsewhere. We’d contacted Oltco and had been speaking to its team on another matter, and just dropped our problem into the conversation. “Patios, why of course we can help,” came the response to the issue, “resin is just the answer and will tick all the boxes. The finish is smooth, has marvellous anti-slip properties and what’s more, it’s permeable which means there’s no puddling.” The team went on to talk about one of their newer products, which would be an obvious choice for this sort of application – Recycle Bound. It’s made using plastic waste already in circulation, and since its launch, has managed to recycle the equivalent of over 150 million plastic straws in installations across the UK. Even the grid used in Oltco's Recycle Base product is made using 100% recycled plastic, and has a load-bearing capability of up to 800 tonnes per square metre. Fully permeable and recyclable at the end of its life, this really is an innovative product, one that’s testament to Oltco’s commitment to a greener, more sustainable future. It’s also available in a range of colour blends and patterns so you can make a choice that is appropriate for your garden.

Of course, a resin-based patio should not just be viewed as a replacement for an existing one. For those of you who are yet to lay down your first outdoor dining area or just re uire a space that is useable all-year round, then why not get in touch with Oltco? The team is ever ready to listen to your requirements and will come up with the best option, all the while guiding you through the project, from the initial planning stage through to installation. hat s more, so confident is ltco in its product that it’ll even offer a 20-year guarantee, plus aftercare. But should you need more convincing, just have a look at the website where you ll find rafts of information and a selection of testimonials from satisfied customers who’ve already wandered down the Oltco path. Or should we say patio?

f you’re thinking about a self-catering holiday, that deals away with all the hassle of travelling abroad this summer, then look no further than Falmouth Holiday Homes. They are the bonafide experts and have properties on their books that can fulfil the needs of full on families or couples seeking a cosy romantic retreat. s their name suggests, the sailing capital of Cornwall is the hub of their operation, but with tendrils spreading into other quintessential, sought-after locations such as lushing, evoran, alpas, and enryn. Although an all-year-round destination, Falmouth comes alive in the summer months and has a wealth of things to engage every visitor. This bustling port has a wide range of bouti ue shops, stunning restaurants and art galleries as well as the National Maritime Museum; not forgetting endennis Castle built in the 1 th century and now maintained by English Heritage. f course, no holiday would be complete without a trip to the beach, of which almouth has four yllyngvase, Castle, Swanpool and aenporth. Falmouth is a big draw with walkers and cyclists and is perfectly placed to explore further afield. n fact, the region s subtropical climate led to the establishment of many lush and exotic gardens, packed with magnolias, tree ferns, rhododendrons,

gunnera and palms. Three of the finest examples are Trelissick, lendurgan and Trebah, all within easy reach. enryn, with its cobbled streets, is a stone s throw away, along with Flushing which is just across the river. The laid-back vibe and community spirit that you ll find here comes to a head in late July when it holds its Regatta Week, featuring water-based activities such as bath tub racing, rowing, swimming, a sandcastle competition, crab catching and street market, culminating in a carnival procession on the final Saturday night. f all this sounds too hectic then Falmouth Holiday Homes also have properties that have an even more rural location ones that abut the water s edge along the estuary that stretches from the outer edge of almouth ay up to the old port of week. n the opposite direction are the tree-lined creeks and tributaries of the al where you ll find evoran and alpas. All of which have their unique charm with pubs and small local stores that will make your holiday complete.

A one-woman show about outdoor swimming and how it can keep you afloat, this production from Liz Richardson and ImPossible Producing is full of humour, heart, live music, projection and an optional swim from Trebah’s beach. SWIM is a tender tale based on the true story of Liz who, after time away living in the city, returns to the hills of the Lake District, where tragedy rocks the lives of an entire community.

The Munch Mission Do you possess the wit, nerve and skill to become a CIA agent? From the creatives at

Brave Bold Drama, The Munch Mission is a playable family theatre show where those participating will work with agents, Kahlo and ali to solve a fiendishly sneaky art heist and recover a world-famous artwork that’s gone missing from Oslo National Museum.

Souls & Cells This new, contemporary dance duo – Akeim Toussaint and Crystal Zillwood – sees the coming together of two distinctive artists, who build an artistic universe through embodied explorations of ancestry and biology; what makes us different, and what unites us on a universal level? Drawing on their experience in creating solo dance works, Souls & Cells creates a dialogue between the crossing of heritages and stories in relation to human biology, exploring differences and commonalities whilst inviting the audience to see their own bodies and stories in a different way. Garden entry from 4pm included within the ticket price.

ith a venerable history that dates back to the original Cornwall Agricultural Society held in 1793, the Royal Cornwall Show has grown to become one of the Duchy’s premier events. What began as an agricultural event, the show has now grown into an amazing three days where there is something for everyone to see and fun to be had by all. Staying true to its roots, this year will see some of the most anticipated livestock and equine competition in the country, where prize specimens will be on show both in the Main Ring and the surrounding small animal and bird tents. Hot competition has always been at the very core of the Royal Cornwall Show with everyone chasing the coveted coloured rosettes. The show offers hundreds of competitive classes across a whole host of sections, from beef cattle to bees, ponies to pigs, and dogs to blacksmiths, as well as a strong horticultural showing in the Flower Show, thought to be one of the country’s best. Visitors can take a ringside seat for the hotly anticipated show jumping and for the first time in its history, the Shetland Grand National will be at the event. Pint-sized ponies will be darting around the course with their young jockeys, having previously entertained crowds at Badminton Horse Trials and the Royal Windsor Horse Show.

The Bolddog display team will again be gracing the Main Ring with stunts and tricks 35ft feet in the air, with the help of the largest and most sophisticated mobile landing system. The ever-exciting Inter Hunt Relay will be entertaining crowds, alongside the famous Sheep Shearing competitions and the Cornwall Cider Championships, which is a highlight for many! As ever there will be a host of agricultural stands – this is a time of year when Cornwall’s farming community comes together to do business, compete and to catch up with colleagues and friends. Many are lifetime members, supporting Cornwall's premier annual event and the promotion of agriculture in the county. It is Cornwall that truly lies at the heart of this event, with its history and heritage finding its way into every corner from the magnificent Steam Fair, impressive Countryside Area, and the unmissable Cornish Heritage Pavilion.

These stunning islands are fringed with sandy secluded beaches and criss-crossed with miles of trails and paths. Life here moves at a slower, more natural pace. Ramble from the beach to an artisan bar and enjoy slow cooked,

PUT A SPRING BACK

IN YOUR STEP DID YOU KNOW? Your knees, hips and other joints rely on a supportive network of muscles, tendons and ligaments to keep them sturdy and working efficiently. Exercises that build these muscles and ligaments will strengthen your joints, making you less prone to injury in the long term. A further benefit of exercise is that it can build strength in your joints which can help improve your posture and prevent a cascade of injuries as a result, and the more you move, the less stiff and fatigued you’ll feel.

DID YOU KNOW? Orthopaedic Surgeons at Nuffield Health Plymouth Hospital provide comprehensive orthopaedic diagnostics and treatment to the Cornwall and Devon region. They have specialists in all areas of orthopaedics, supported by onsite diagnostics which include MRI, CT, Ultrasound and X-Ray.

I

Do you shy away from exercise in fear of damaging your joints? Nuffield Health experts say you needn’t be worried, exercise can in fact help to protect your joints, as well as relieve pain.

don’t do that exercise because it’s bad for your joints. Sound familiar? It’s a common reason people avoid exercises like running, weight training or some classes. However, the assumption that exercise damages your joints has been found to be false. Studies conducted over the past decade have shown that exercise benefits your joints, helping to build healthy cartilage and muscular support around the joints, keeping them stronger for longer. Arthritis happens when the cartilage that cushions your joints wears away: this can eventually lead to bone rubbing on bone, which causes pain and discomfort. This isn’t the result of exercise, but of injury and constant low-level damage over time. Research has shown that exercise can actually reinforce cartilage and promote healing. Each of your joints are surrounded by a thin tissue connected to your blood supply called the synovial membrane: this membrane produces the fluid that lubricates your joints, a little like the engine oil in a car. Cartilage has no independent blood supply, so instead it gets its nutrients from this synovial fluid. When exercising, your blood pumps faster around your body, providing the membrane with a plentiful supply of nutrients, which are infused into the fluid.

What’s more, running and other highimpact exercises, have been shown to force this nutrient rich fluid into the cartilage, keeping it healthy and promoting healing. Of course, if you already suffer from joint pain, high-impact exercises that aggravate this pain should be avoided, but there’s plenty of exercises that you can do to build back strength into your joints. Mr Andy Murphy FRCS, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Sports Injury Specialist at u eld ealth lymouth Hospital says: “Exercise can be really beneficial for overall bone and joint health however persistent painful joints could be an indicator of early arthritis (wear and tear that might benefit from specialist assessment and sometimes arthroscopic (keyhole) surgical intervention. If exercise is not helping but actually making your pain worse, you should seek advice from an orthopaedic specialist and maybe further investigation including scans. More often than not, we can get you back to playing the sports you love.”

ith the intention of remaining for just two years before returning to his home in New Zealand, Jude Kereama quickly found his feet here in the UK. Eventually, after a time spent opening restaurants for a group in London, he moved to Cornwall with his wife Jane, where they established Kota, the first of two restaurants in orthleven. The second, Kota Kai, came a few years later. Commanding an enviable position on orthleven s harbour head, Kai complements the fine dining experience of Kota with a family friendly atmosphere. Its eclectic menu fuses the vibrant, playful flavours of south east sia with Cornwall s abundance of home grown meat, seafood and produce. “ t is like od s own larder,” says ude, “from the number one butchers in the UK and the freshest seafood and fish, to the top vegetables and herb farms and other artisan producers.” This respect for Cornwall s natural pantry has been fundamental to ude s success. n fact, Kota is one of only a handful of restaurants in Cornwall to have been awarded three osettes, but it s not all about the food: “It has been lovely to introduce our resident artist, axine reer, and to have our own range of pottery made by The Toll ouse ottery Ceramics. t makes

the whole experience more immersive,” explains ude, “celebrating Cornwall not just for its food, but its creative identity, too.” Cornwall has to be one of the UK s premier foodie destinations and orthleven is at the forefront. ut it isn t only ude s presence here that has cemented his association with Cornish cuisine; he has also appeared no fewer than four times on the C s Great British Menu. “I was always a huge fan of GBM. When I was asked to compete, it gave me a sense of belonging as one of the best restaurants in the south west of England. There is a mountain of pressure for you to get things right as the whole country tunes in to watch. ut it is a double edged sword. It can be great for you if you do well, but equally as bad if you make mistakes. Luckily for me have done okay.” s an example of what has put ude s restaurants on the UK s culinary map, he shares with us one of his favourite, signature recipes: Seafood Laksa...

CORNISH LEGEND Born from the depths of smuggling folklore comes a spiced rum to warm the cockles of any heart.

I

t's no secret that Cornwall has a rich history of smugglers and pirates, but it’s the legend of a lesser known figure in Cornish folklore – the wrecker – that provided the inspiration for Cornwall s first black spiced rum, Crusty Juggler. Linked closely to the smuggling trade, a wrecker was someone who salvaged goods from sunken ships – taking advantage of a law that permitted the looting of stricken vessels provided that no one on board was alive. The practice of wrecking was so lucrative, that wreckers would deliberately direct ships into the rocks and kill any remaining survivors. As Crusty Juggler co-founder Tom Hanson explains: “The Crusty Juggler character is based on the legend of an infamous Cornish wrecker who would stand near the shore after dark and lure ships to their doom with lengths of flaming driftwood. e tied this in with a line from one of our favourite movies, Hot Fuzz, and the Crusty Juggler character was born.” Founded by brothers Tom and Sam Hanson, Crusty Juggler spiced rum is made just outside of St Ives from a blend of imported Caribbean rum, black strap molasses and exotic spices. ot only is it Cornwall s first black spiced rum, it’s one of the only rums in the UK to be matured in ex-bourbon whiskey casks.

“ e wanted to create a versatile spiced rum that worked well in cocktails but could also be drunk neat,” explains Sam. “Finishing the rum in whiskey barrels helps to mellow out the spices and also adds notes of coconut and toasted oak.” Although the Crusty Juggler character might have been a villain, in creating the brand Tom and Sam wanted to give something back to the local community – which is why for the sale of every bottle they make a donation to Cornish charity Surfer’s Against Sewage. “The Crusty Juggler brand is rooted in the Cornish coast,” explains Tom. “The ocean is the lifeblood of Cornwall and we think it should be protected at all costs.” So, what does it taste like? Think treacle sponge cake and creamy vanilla, cut with dried orange peel, rich spice and a rush of ginger. But don’t take our word for it, grab yourself a bottle and try out Crusty Juggler’s signature cocktail – the Juggler’s Revenge!

A TRUE

SPIRIT

Cornish Rock Gin’s ever-growing collection of carefully crafted gins and rums offer a true taste of Cornwall.

A

stroll across Rock beach with their four-legged companion was where Angie and George had the vision for Cornish Rock Gin. Their idea was having a small distillery, but little did they know that from the outset there would be a huge demand for this Cornish spirit. Made from the most natural products, many of which are found here in the Duchy, and Cornish spring water, the gins are all sugar free and maintain a classic dry taste with subtle flavours and undertones. The Rock Distillery set out to produce a gin that was clean and pure and now make eight fabulous gins all made with the freshest and best botanicals possible. After much research a new bottle has been designed to make the presentation of the gin even more of an event. The bottles even match the exotic Rock Gin glasses which are the ideal way to enjoy a Rock Gin perfect serve. For the rums, the sugar cane base comes from the Caribbean, but many of the other ingredients are sourced as close to the Duchy as possible. The base is re-distilled in Cornwall with the addition of some exciting flavours. There are now eight fantastic Cornish Rums, again made from the purest ingredients, all with a smooth taste and some really amazing

flavours such as fresh coconut, vanilla, mango and passion fruit, English cherries and even Cornish saffron. Angie and George are passionate about their products and love to spread the word, with tempting taster shots. “We try to get out there to as many people as possible. So, as well as being an online retailer, we attend many markets and events so that people can come and taste our products at their leisure. Here in Cornwall, you will find us at ude arket every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. We are in Tintagel next to the ld ost ce every Tuesday and Saturday. ou can find us at Falmouth Market on the Moor every Saturday,” explains Angie. “We also have a small retail and tasting space in Port Isaac, plus we are at Port saac market every first Sunday of the month. f you can’t get to any of those locations then we also have a small retail shop and tasting station down in the Allen Valley just off the A39.”

ART

OBSERVE AND REFLECT Transforming motionless images into works of art, Dr Martín Raskovsky pushes the boundaries of our perception.

A

n eclectic artist with an incomparable and complex aesthetic touch, Dr Martín Raskovsky’s visionary journey and passion for photography was born early and followed a stimulating and remarkable evolution that has resulted in thought provoking, intellectual and deeply evocative works of art. Encountering Martín's expressive and captivating creations, you ll find yourself stimulated by a strong sense of movement, innate harmony and an intense mystery that brings you to pause, observe and reflect, taking time to explore the rich, complex, albeit exquisitely graceful, compositions with a sense of enjoyable curiosity. The enthralling flows and meanders of energy in his work are truly penetrating as the elements start to blend with the surreal aura of the backgrounds. Finally, the authentic source of the final artwork comes to light a perfect photograph. The camera is used as a sacred and basic tool to catch the latent and fierce beauty of a specific instant. Every individual trace of majesty and grace is captured by Dr. Raskovsky, to then be given new life, a conception of dramatic artistry that roots in science, nature and the subconscious mind of the artist. Motionless images are transformed into works of art made of a versatile and energetic elegance

that recall graceful watercolours or fluid oils with the communicative power of a great expressionist. Martín's creative genius is an outstanding innovation to photographic art; after centuries of technical and technological evolution, the progress of the optical instrument that revolutionised our lives seems to deserve a new dimension. Impressionist painters accelerated the gesture of their brush strokes in order to capture the ephemeral and immediate nuances of light, while Martín carries out the process in reverse. He already owns reality and, with a uni ue and refined vision, he transforms photography into post-impressionistic masterpieces. Flowing waves and sinuous lines create a sense of movement that vibrates all the nuances of a wild and rampant nature. Martín's rich imagination is able to relieve the viewer from the dominant and accepted norms of photographic art and, as a consequence, he opens our minds.

AND BEYOND… Situated in one of the oldest streets in Falmouth The Grey Lurcher is a dream for those seeking the curious and eclectic.

E

stablished in 2017, you’ll fi nd a curation of conversation pieces, healthcare products as well as seasonal plants and gardenalia in the gorgeous courtyard. And with a continuing expanding busines it is no surprise that having taken advantage of the opportunity to move to their current premises during the fi rst lockdown, owner Julie recognised an opportunity to diversify even further. Stock ranges have been extended and brands that fit well under the umbrella of the company’s ethos have come on-board. One such is Made for Life Organics, who produce skincare products that nourish your body both inside and out and have minimal impact upon the planet’s resources. This is very much a line of approach that works well with The Grey Lurcher’s client base as has been borne out by their continued loyalty. Julie says: “We have a lot of support from our local customers, which is absolutely essential in today’s retail sector.” A product that is always a fi rm favourite are Annie Sloan’s chalk paints, which saw a huge upturn in sales during lockdown. It really lends itself to upcycling furniture and is an easy, no fuss way of exploring

your creativity and producing results that replicate the patina from years of use. The result is both genuine and satisfying to achieve. Cornish Milk Mineral paints are another new addition to the range – a company that produce water-based, non-toxic, nonsolvent, non-chemical environmentally friendly paints that reflect the colours of the Cornish landscape. Rest assured the shop still stocks homeware lifestyle brands such as Parlane, Grand Illusions and Casa Verde, along with St Mawes Scent Room luxury candles and diffusers, limited edition printed velvet cushions and scarves from Arcana as well as a small selection of jewellery and various handmade items. For the summer, expect a more coastal living vibe, as Falmouth becomes more of an all-year round destination, The Grey Lurcher is fully embracing that feeling.

JOINT

EFFORT

Keeping your knees healthy this spring in Cornwall, with Mr Pengas, Orthopaedic Knee Consultant.

C

ornwall has so much to offer, literally on our doorstep. Some amazing landscapes, coastal walks, beaches, along with a myriad of outdoor pursuits and sports. We all wish to be able to enjoy these, especially now that spring has arrived and the weather is improving. However, if you are struggling with knee pain, these activities, sadly, can remain a dream. Duchy Hospital is here to help you get back to the things you love; don’t let knee instability and pain hold you back from enjoying your life! We have some advice from one of Duchy Hospital’s Orthopaedic Knee Consultants, Mr Pengas. “Most patients are worried that knee pain equates to a big operation for a ‘new knee’,” he explains. “That is far from the truth in a significant proportion of the cases. At Duchy, we can explore all available options and solutions from non-operative treatments to surgical intervention by consulting with a knee specialist that can truly offer tailor made solutions to your knee needs.” Mr Pengas truly believes that the best knee you will ever have, is your own. “It is imperative that the correct diagnosis and management options are thoroughly explored in a timely manner, to enhance the chances of your native knee’s survival and function. Not all painful knees may require surgery or indeed replacement, but that option is available when necessary and appropriate.” Mr Pengas is a Trauma and Orthopaedics Consultant specialising solely on knee pathology. He has completed sought-after

knee fellowships and a Doctorate Thesis on knee arthritis. He has maintained an active interest in knee sport injuries, joint preservation and biological solutions that can enhance and prolong your own knee joint function as well as joint replacement surgery. Mr Pengas is an active member of several national and international knee societies, in which he is currently involved with the upcoming European Consensus Statement on PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections in knee osteoarthritis. So, if you have been unlucky to have a knee sporting injury or suffer with knee pain and arthritis, preventing you from your sport or daily activities, don’t let that hold you back in life. Seek the expert advice and explore your options with an exclusively knee-focused specialist, whose aim will be in finding solutions to prolong your native knee's longevity and function.
