Welcome

to the September edition of Cornwall Living!

With summer days still to be enjoyed we love to get out and about, making the most of all Cornwall has to offer. While the sun may not shine every day, there is always plenty to see and do, whatever the weather. Rosie Cattrell has been channelling her inner adrenaline junky and searching out some fantastic outdoor adventures across Cornwall. From sailing to surfing and sky wires to slip-and-slides, turn to page 21 so you don't miss out on the action!

We've also been searching out some of the best getaways in our special feature from page 43. Across Cornwall there is the opportunity to purchase some very special places to stay where you can not only enjoy holidays for years to come but also have the benefit of letting out your property for a return on your investment. Say goodbye to airport queues and trying to fit your clothes into a tiny suitcase! With a self-catering property of your own, you have the luxury of loading up the car with all the essentials and within a few hours, putting your feet up on your veranda with a glass of something cold in hand. Even better, if the property you purchase happens to be on one of Cornwall's amazing holiday parks you can benefit from facilities such as outdoor heated swimming pools, entertainment and children's play areas – and all just a stone's throw from the beach.

PROUD TO BE PART OF

Elsewhere, this month Cornwall Living sheds a spotlight on the Penwith area of Cornwall (page 61). Often known as the 'wild west', Penwith has a landscape and scenery all of its own. Steeped in myth and legend and boasting spectacular places to visit at every turn, such as the Minnack Theatre, Land's End or one of the many iconic mining sites, Penwith is a place for exploration. It is also the stepping stone for a voyage by air or boat to the magical Isles of Scilly. The opportunities are endless; whether you stay for a day, a week or longer, you won't be disappointed.

Any issue of Cornwall Living wouldn't be complete without taking a look at Cornwall's property for sale. This issue, Rohrs & Rowe showcases a stunning four-bedroom cottage with views across the Camel Estuary (page 29), while Philip Martin (page 30) features an amazing coastal home set high above the beach at Porthtowan. If you already own in the Duchy and are looking for interior inspiration, then turn to page 35 where Eve Hughes Interior Design can assist with anything from a large-scale interior project to a simple refresh.

...happy reading!

Cornish Seal Sanctuary’s summer superstars

This summer, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary is celebrating its wonderful residents –the beating heart of the charity’s vital conservation work. There for various reasons, including life-long illnesses, each resident has their own story about how they found solace with the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. Today, you can meet some of those special characters and discover the vital marine conservation work happening on our doorstep.

Rescued in August 2018 from Trevellas Cove, Banana first came to the Sanctuary completely malnourished, with bite wounds to her flippers and parasitic pneumonia. She was successfully released but later re-rescued due to difficulties. Unable to survive alone, she now has a permanent home at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary.

Play the day away at Jungle Jack’s

Marlin was rescued in 2002 from Sennen Cove, after being found tangled in fishing netting. During his treatment, the team noticed he’s completely blind – and likely born that way! With a low chance of surviving the wild, he’s been at the Sanctuary ever since.

By visiting animals like Marlin and Banana, you can help the Cornish Seal Sanctuary provide a forever home for marine animals in need for years to come. The Sanctuary also runs a successful rescue, rehabilitation and release programme for wild grey seal pups through the winter months.

The sweetest works of art from Café Cocoa

Working together as chocolatier and artist in their chocolate and art boutique, Café Cocoa, Emma and Immy specialise in chocolate, gifts, cards and homeware.

When Emma and Immy previously started working together, they found they shared an equal passion for what they do and loved being creative in their relative fields, so it only made sense to team up and combine the perfectly paired world of art and artisan chocolate.

Emma has previously worked as a chef, catering for celebrities such as Elton John and the Beckhams, as well as working in luxury restaurants all over the world. Having spent eight years teaching professional cookery at Cornwall College, Emma has always had a passion for flavour and being creative within cookery, and is bringing that all together with her beautiful Cornish handmade chocolates.

Love of Lemons celebrates success

Immy has always had a love for art and illustration, and after completing her degree in Textile Design from Falmouth University in 2021, she focused on running creative workshops, now designing cards, prints and homewares inspired by her life in Cornwall, all of which can be found on her Instagram, @cocoahome_cornwall. Both Emma and Immy are running workshops for children and adults at the boutique, so why not head down to 108c Kenwyn Street, Truro, TR1 3DJ, to get involved and be creative?

For more information email info@casacocoa.net or contact cafecocoa_cornwall

Selling a uniquely curated edit of vintage fashion and accessories, and now expanding with an additional shop in the beautiful Nansledan, Love of Lemons has built a reputation for quality, with a motto to ‘Reuse. Re-love. Re-style’.

This year, owner Bex Osman scooped Gold for Love of Lemons in the 2023 Muddy Stilettos Awards, winning the Women’s Fashion Store Award, amongst thousands of nominated Cornish businesses! “Love of Lemons is dear to my heart,” she explains, “born out of my dream to share the beautiful things I find with the world, reusing these star finds and inviting people to add them to their wardrobes. Let’s bring the old back to life alongside the new!”

Copperfish Distillery is excited to announce the launch of a new whiskey-style product, Kerbon®. Making its debut at the Looe Food Festival on September 10th, Jamie from Tom Thumb in Newquay will join Copperfish for cocktail demonstrations using their range of spirits, including Kerbon®.

This Cornish, Bourbon-style spirit is made from local corn, barley and wheat. After careful fermentation the mash is distilled and the fine liquor rested in specially selected oak casks to develop taste and colour. This versatile aged spirit tastes great neat or with a dash of cola, as well as making excellent classic cocktails. Also look out for Copperfish’s Cornish Single Grain Reserve –a very smooth aged spirit made from a mash of single grain creating a creamy liquor before aging in selected oak casks.

Navigating money worries, with Mustard Financial

As of 22nd June, the Bank of England raised interest rates from 4.5% to 5% – their highest level for almost 15 years and the 13th consecutive increase since December 2021. The cost of living continues to rise, with soaring fuel, energy and food prices. So, what can we do to help navigate the current financial challenges we’re all facing?

Talking to your financial advisers is a good place to start. Mustard Financial can help to make sure you and your family have the most appropriate mortgage and policies in place. For instance, if you’re on a standard variable rate, why not get in touch to see if you can be moved on to a lower fixed rate to give you more stability over the next few years?

Or, if you’re in the last six months of your current fixed rate, the team can help you look at your options moving forward. You may find that you’re able to secure a new product with a view to take effect at the end of your current fixed rate, so you’ll be protected against interest rate rises over the next six months.

If you would like to discuss how the team can help you, make sure to get in touch to book an appointment. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

A

hilarious and heart-warming tale

Featuring live foot-stomping music, quacking poetry and just a hint of Cornish eccentricity, FUP is a big-hearted, uproarious modern fable which plays exclusively at The Minack Theatre from 20th September to 5th October. Based on a cult American novella by author Jim Dodge, and written and directed by Cornwall’s Olivier-Award-winning Simon Harvey, it was originally produced in 2016 by Cornwall’s Kneehigh Theatre, touring nationally in 2018 and receiving a host of rave reviews. The Stage hailed it “Joyful and profound”, while The Times commented: “With live music, big, earthy performances and heart-melting puppetry, this comedy has a joyous, celebratory fizz and a piercing melancholy.”

Featuring original cast members, including Penwith-based actor David Mynne and renowned musician Ben Sutcliffe, the production (produced by o-region and The Minack) has been reimagined exclusively for The Minack Theatre.

The perfect Cornish keepsake

Justin Duance casts precious metals in beach sand to form beautiful organic jewellery. Inspired by combining unusual materials with precious metals, Justin offers a full range of unisex rings and accessories inspired by the rugged Cornish coastline.

You can even collect a little bit of sand from your favourite beach for your piece to be made in, encased in fond memories to last a lifetime, or choose from their extensive sand library.

The sand not only creates a unique texture,

but little grains are captured in the metal so you can carry a piece of your favourite place with you wherever you go.

The team can even melt down and reform old jewellery to give it a new lease of life. Visit the workshop to design a completely bespoke piece or simply choose one of the team’s sandcast designs; just gather your sand and they will cast jewellery especially for you.

Having been lucky enough to be born and raised here in Cornwall, every peek of the sun through the clouds meant time spent outside, in the outdoor playground that is our beautiful county. As a child, days spent by the sea felt commonplace; splashing around in the salty surf with siblings and friends; riding my first surfboard into shore while Dad pushed from behind; finding my balance without my stabilisers on one of the many cycle trails that weave through the countryside and around the coast. The opportunities were endless, and today I can fondly say that this certainly hasn’t changed, along with my regard that every sunny day is one to be spent outside.

Cornwall is dotted with local businesses and charities who have made it their mission to prove that there is nothing better than being outdoors with your friends and family, and one such charity is the Children’s Sailing Trust (CST). With a determination to create accessible and affordable watersports and

sailing opportunities for young people in Cornwall, there is a wonderful understanding here that physical and mental health are intrinsically linked. Physically, sailing and paddlesports can help strengthen core muscles and improve balance, coordination, and flexibility while improving cardiovascular fitness. Just as important is the mental well-being and freedom that getting out on the water provides, reducing levels of stress and anxiety.

The CST team are very aware that learning new skills and achieving personal goals can help to build self-esteem and self-confidence, vital attributes that can have a positive impact on overall well-being and attitude, which can be difficult to come across in a life spent indoors. their thoughts on a visit to CST in 2022: “It has been a wonderful experience for our students, improving their mental and physical heath, learning about themselves and each other and achieving more than they thought they could, improving self-esteem and confidence.”

With locations on both the Helford River and Trevassack lake, the charity also runs something called CST Experiences –commercial courses and sessions for groups, individuals and families. With every swim, sail and SUP session you purchase, you’ll be helping the Children’s Sailing Trust’s work to create opportunities for kids to get out on the water who wouldn’t otherwise get the chance!

Over in Kessel Quarry, a once successful granite quarry now flooded with spring water, lies another of Cornwall’s hidden outdoor activity centres. In some ways, Kernow Adventure Park feels more like a nature reserve than an activity centre, nestled within a breathtaking 21-acre site just outside of Falmouth, but there is no shortage of fun to be had here. The calmest of crystal-waters makes for a perfect open-water swim, whether a leisurely float or as part of a training schedule. Or, why not explore the lake by paddle board, gliding over the glassy water at your leisure? Watch out for dragonflies flitting across the water’s surface, and as you explore you may well see the strange shapes of submerged trees peer up from the depths.

The E-boats are another fun activity, charged and ready to propel you on a voyage around the lake, but the main attraction is hands down the Aquapark. The chance to jump, splash and slide your way around an impressive inflatable floating obstacle course

isn’t something to be passed up, and with room for up to 40 people why not bring everyone you know for an hour of waterpark fun?

For something a little more fast paced, the Monster Slip and Slide needs little introduction. Just four minutes away from the stunning beaches of Widemouth Bay in Bude, here you’re faced with no less than 360 feet of rad summer fun, open seven days a week. Hop into a ring or launch off on a super-fast body board and soar down to the bottom in uninhibited glee, a feeling some of us have long forgotten!

To go one step further into adrenalinefuelled territory, Hangloose Adventure Eden is the next level when it comes to outdoor fun in Cornwall. Based in the incredible surroundings of the Eden Project in St Austell (a wonderful day out in itself), Hangloose invites you to push your boundaries and take it to the limit with an incredible range of activities. Why not introduce the kids to scaling the walls of the outdoor climbing centre rather than the walls of the house? Or, step it up from the swings at the park and

Read, Watch, EXPERIENCE

It’s never been easier for those who love Cornwall to read, watch and experience for themselves the Ultimate Lifestyle By The Sea. From regular email updates and online blogs, to Cornish video content and incredible monthly competitions giving you the chance to win your own little piece of Cornwall, even if you can’t lay your hands on a copy of our monthly issues, our multi-media approach means you can access the best of Cornwall Living anywhere, at any time.

drop 15 metres over the Cornish cliffs on the giant adrenaline swing for anyone aged eight and up?

Embark on an action-packed journey through the tree tops on the Skytrek aerial adventure course, or throw yourself off an eight-metre platform to free fall onto the biggest air bag you’ll ever see. For the bravest of the brave, the Skywire zipwire will have you zooming at 60mph over the unbeatable views of Eden’s biomes, with a feeling as close as you can get to flying – a memory you can share with a loved one to last a lifetime.

As well as an incredible collection of outdoor activity centres, Cornwall comes with its own naturally occurring adventure parks, the most obvious being the shining Cornish coastline. Studded with life-guarded and Blue Flag beaches, there’s nothing quite like heading to your favourite stretch of sand, wetsuit on and surfboard under arm for an afternoon well spent in the surf with likeminded swell seekers. If you’re looking to get kitted out for your own salt-water adventure, look no further than Hayle’s Down The Line Surf Shop, home to everything you could possibly need.

As an adult, I now know that Cornwall had doted on me as a child, and I was spoilt for choice with the incredible outdoor playground that it provided everyone who called this place home, whether that be for a week, a month, or a lifetime. Like many Cornish folk, I can happily admit that I have held a fond appreciation for these shining shores since childhood, and this summer I’m determined to get outside and make the most of it, as should you!

PENHALE COTTAGE

A beautifully presented four-bedroom cottage with enchanting views of the Camel Estuary and surrounding countryside.

Tucked away in an idyllic hamlet, not far from the beautiful Camel Estuary, is Penhale Cottage. Boasting enviable views from a prime position in the Cornish countryside, the property has undergone a number of improvements since 2021, including a replacement kitchen and newly fitted shower room, to name just a few.

Speaking of which, the impressive kitchen diner stands as the feature room of the house. Fitted with tasteful, natural-toned units and cupboards, combined with wooden countertops and exposed wood-style

flooring, there is a rustic feel to the room, complemented by a large central island and black Aga.

The adjacent sitting room is double aspect, with four windows to provide excellent natural light, and the cosy addition of a wood burner to warm chilly evenings. The ground floor is completed by a spacious utility room and useful shower room.

Upstairs, the double-aspect main bedroom enjoys excellent views to the estuary, with one of the other three bedrooms also enjoying these views. All are stylishly presented and serviced by the recently refitted family shower room.

To the front of the property is off-road parking for two cars, and at the rear is a patio area, from which spectacular views can be enjoyed over an al-fresco breakfast or an evening tipple with friends, while a goodsized lawn area wraps around the side of the property with a useful wooden storage shed.

INTERIORSIconic

Now celebrating its 13th birthday, Eve Hughes Interior Design continues to help us realise the homes of our dreams.

With over 23 years’ experience in the industry, Eve Hughes Interior Design, headed up by Eve Hughes herself, offers a professional interior design service that specialises in bespoke curtains, blinds and soft furnishings. All hand sewn and finished to the highest standard using traditional techniques right here in Cornwall, great care is taken to source the best-quality linings and sundries, with a full measuring and fitting service if required.

From large-scale projects to a simple re-vamp of an existing interior, Eve's expert eye for detail makes reflecting your personal style and taste an easy task, with each project skilfully managed with the same enthusiasm, attention to detail and quality of finish, regardless of scale. For Eve, quality is key, and with brands like Designers Guild, Romo, Jane Churchill and Christopher Farr Cloth at her fingertips, you can rest assured that only the very best fabrics are available.

One client, Sue from Truro, is over the moon with her experience: “I used to be the person who had to look through every fabric book in every

shop – and then I found Eve. She has transformed most of our house over the last couple of years by sourcing a range of samples for each room. Eve has the most amazing knack of ‘reading’ a home and its inhabitants and has come up with wonderful ideas when requested, always steering us in the right direction. Nothing has been too much trouble during choosing, making up and fitting. In brief, she is just the best.”

And Sue isn’t the only happy customer. Eve’s collection of heartfelt testimonials just goes to show that her dedication and passion for her craft shines through in her work time and time again. It’s no wonder that her business is celebrating its 13th birthday this summer, and I’m sure there are many more to come.

If you’re looking for a little inspiration on how your house could become your dream home, why not get in touch with an expert in all things interior?

AND UPWARDSOnwards

With over 30 years’ experience, and more than 50,000 window, door and conservatory installations across Cornwall and beyond, the Rodda & Hocking team really know their stuff when it comes to upgrading your home. Here are the team’s top five reasons as to why you should seriously consider replacing your windows and doors, and with this level of expertise and experience under their belts, it’s certainly hard to ignore!

Make your home safer and more secure

If your current windows are old, draughty and don’t lock or open properly this could be a serious fire safety concern. Rest easy at night knowing that everyone under your roof is safe and secure.

Improve your home’s energy efficiency

Replacing faded or mismatched windows and upgrading them with new colours and modern designs will not only enhance the look of your home, but it can also add value. With each new energy-efficient window and door, your home will be that much better insulated, helping reduce those everincreasing heating bills that we’d all like to tackle for 2023.

Quiet the outside noise

You might be surprised at how much quieter your home will be as a result of replacing windows with acoustic performance glass. Relax easier at home, and even sleep better, which can do wonders for your overall health!

Up the comfort factor!

Once you make your home better insulated, your heating system doesn’t have to work as hard to reach your desired temperature. A home with efficient, optimally performing windows and doors will remain comfortable throughout the year.

Rodda & Hocking can offer the very latest software and samples to illustrate how your house could look with replacement windows and doors, or even an exciting new conservatory, so you can see the results before making any decisions – it’s as easy as that!

Coastal ESCAPES

Our choice of Cornish coastal getaways

Owl’s Nest, Hayle

Located on the edge of Hayle’s ‘Towans’, a three-mile stretch of coastal paradise from Hayle to Gwithian, sits Owl’s Nest, a newly built, dog-friendly holiday home that has been completed to exceptional standards and is just moments from one of Cornwall’s epic surfing beaches.

Owl's Nest has utilised natural materials, hand-curated details and natural coastal light to create a calming and inviting space, inside and out, with accommodation for up to six guests. Some of its top features include a cosy wood burner in the open-plan living area, a freestanding bath tub in the principle bedroom and a separate games room for children and the ‘big kids’ of the family.

Although located in a quiet area of Hayle, in relative terms the property is not far from the bustling Cornish atmosphere. It is within walking distance to beaches, eateries and is an easy drive to some of Cornwall’s top destinations such as St Ives, Penzance and Marazion, all of which are less than twenty minutes away. Better yet, you’re in a fantastic position to enjoy spontaneous ramblings across the dunes, which sit right behind the property. Your perfect Cornish escape at Owl’s Nest is waiting...

Songbirds, Bude

Songbirds finds itself tucked away from the noise and busyness of day-to-day life, in a Cornish oasis made for relaxing. Painstakingly restored, this barn sits within the secluded grounds of 16th century farmhouse and although wonderfully private, every modern luxury has been considered, from hand-built kitchens and luxury bathrooms, to oversized sofas and sumptuous beds. Wander out through the doors from the large living spaces to the terraces and enjoy your own little paradise where there is even an area to play petanque to while away the afternoons.

Complete with a fire pit, barbeque and pizza oven, Songbirds is the perfect place to unwind and eat al fresco as the sun comes down on this little piece of heaven. A decked terrace at the bottom of the garden overlooks the large pond where you can take in the morning chorus with a warm coffee in hand to start the day in the most maginificent way. Beach Pads, Lelant

Occupying a spectacular beach position overlooking St Ives Bay, these three seaside houses are a sensory paradise. Fantastic facilities include an indoor heated swimming pool, two private hot tubs and an entertaining space for the whole group overlooking the ocean inside and outside. Enjoy an evening sitting around a stone fire pit just above the beach. If you prefer there is also space for quiet reflection and privacy away from the crowds. Ferry House and Ferryman’s Rest both enjoy conservatories allowing the outside inside, especially on a sunny winter’s day. Boasting inescapable sea views, all houses are well equipped, offering open plan living spaces, whilst guests frequently comment on feeling both comfortable and cosy. If you could ever tire of the view there are TVs in the living areas and master bedrooms for curling up and watching a film. Alternatively, a moonlit beach stroll is a highly recommended heavenly experience, with only the sound of the waves to disturb you. There is plenty for everyone to do with a sandy beach on your doorstep and a great links golf course only meters away. Water lovers can enjoy kayaking, kitesurfing, surf and SUP activities. Sea fishing from your doorstep is a popular pastime. The beach outside is dog friendly all year round and so perfect for doggy guests too. The South West Coast Path makes for a walker's paradise, with St Ives just an amble away. It is remarkable to be so close to nature whilst having all the modern creature comforts you require close at hand.

Welcome to Getaways

The ultimate guide from Cornwall Living

Cornwall is the ultimate holiday escape! Well, we think so, and although we might be a little biased here at Cornwall Living, the breathtaking coastline, enchanting landscapes, natural beauty and vibrant culture that Cornwall offers makes for an unforgettable holiday experience like no other. Let’s start with the beaches; with golden sands backed by rugged cliffs, Cornwall boasts some of the most picturesque beaches in the UK, ideal for sun-soaked relaxation or thrilling water sports. There is a plethora of holiday homes across the county where you can make the most of the coast; take Tregoad Holiday Park (page 48) as an example. Set in a prime position close to the beaches of Looe and Polperro, make Tregoad your base for seaside adventures and ocean experiences.

Cornwall has also become a foodie destination over recent years and our home village of Porthleven is no exception. Lunch on the go is sorted with a Ced’s Bagel, street-food seafood from Dan, Dan the Lobster Man, or, of course, a pasty from Ann’s. For finer dining, sister restaurants Kota and Kota Kai offer mouthwatering menus and amazing locations on the harbour’s edge, while if you fancy pizza with a view and a great glass of wine then Go-Nauti is the place to be. We recommend Boscrege Caravan Park in Ashton as the perfect base from which to explore Cornwall’s culinary offering. The immaculately kept site has a range of touring pitches as well as caravans to rent. Turn to page 47 to discover more.

Moving from Cornwall's south coast to the north, Trevella Holiday Park caught our eye. With no less than two fishing lakes, a heated outdoor pool and landscaped gardens this is a tranquil park that gives access to the many holiday experiences the north coast of Cornwall has to offer. Sea, sand and surf are minutes away, while the stretch of South West Coast Path that meanders along the cliffs here afford aweinspiring views and invigorating hikes. Turn to page 51 to find out how you could purchase your own holiday home here for less than you might imagine!

If you're looking for your dream Cornish retirement, then LuxuryLife Development (page 57) offers true luxury living for the over 45's, so why not give them a call and arrange to visit this luxury gated community on the outskirts of Newquay?

…your next Cornish holiday could be just a page turn away!

With the shining Cornish coast close by, and Praa Sands only a few minutes’ drive away, days spent making memories on the beach are well within reach, only for you to wander back for the evening to rest your heads in quiet comfort at one of Cornwall’s most popular parks, having previously scooped Best Caravan Site in England!

In such a central location, there is a fantastic collection of Cornish attractions nearby that may not be so easy to choose between; The Eden Project is certainly within easy reach, as is Poldark Mine and Flambards, not to mention the National Seal Sanctuary and the Blue Reef Aquarium.

Family-run and kept to an incredibly high standard, Boscrege is set in twelve tranquil acres, with its collection of static holiday homes laid out amongst a beautifully planted garden. Generous in size and most with electric hook ups, the park welcomes touring caravans

and motor homes alike, so pitch up and make yourself at home.

If you’re looking to hire a caravan to call home for a while, each one is modern with various different sizes and models to suit all, some with central heating and decking, and all with a private garden, parking and a picnic area, fully equipped for a family holiday to be remembered forever.

What’s more, the range of pet-friendly caravans on offer means that your four-legged family members need not be left behind, and the two designated dog walking fields are there to make life a little easier.

So, if it's a holiday in Cornwall this year in a self-catering caravan, purchasing your holiday home or touring, whether for a short break or a long leisurely fortnight's holiday, then Boscrege Caravan Park is a must for a breath of fresh Cornish air.

SUCCESSSet for

Many people have a holiday let or flat, and some even move out of their home to let it to holidaymakers during the summer months, but how can you get the most from your holiday let? We speak to the team at Cornish Traditional Cottages, who have a few handy tips up their sleeves.

A good, reputable agency can often be a sound investment, especially if you don’t live close to the holiday let or have a busy life and can’t drop everything if your guests have an issue with the plumbing. Choosing an agency that has solid reviews, that other owners recommend, and that offers a good level of service to both guests and owners, is important.

Cornish Traditional Cottages was established in 1964 and has been run by members of the same family since then. They have great reviews, and regular offers to support those who want to visit Cornwall.

Having a reputation for first-class customer service is important, whether you’re running your holiday cottage yourself, or using an agency. Being fast to respond to questions from customers, seeking to solve their problems and being flexible regarding small issues that can make or break a customer’s holiday experience will gain you great reviews, and therefore more customers!

Cornish Traditional Cottages has a dedicated, well-trained customer service team, who are committed to ensuring a good experience for guests and owners alike, going the extra mile to ensure customers’ needs and desires are accommodated.

The key letting periods are obviously the school holidays, but you can maximise the occupancy rates, whatever time of year, by raising the quality of your property, with good décor and maintenance standards, as well as the facilities you include, and flexibility of letting periods. Many people are looking for a holiday which they can share with their dog, so offering petfriendly accommodation will open up more possible guests.

To find out more about Cornish Traditional Cottages, and their extensive selection of properties across Cornwall, head to their website. The team will be delighted to talk with you about holiday accommodation you own, so make sure to get in touch!

This magical archipelago of just five inhabited islands is the perfect destination for a short break and will leave you feeling like you’ve escaped reality. You can travel to these stunning islands on board Isles of Scilly Travel’s flagship ferry, Scillonian III, or fly on Skybus, its very own airline.

The Isles of Scilly have a unique climate, with sub-tropical gardens, wild, untamed landscapes and miles of unspoilt, powderwhite beaches. Spending time on the Isles of Scilly is an experience that you will never forget and there are a raft of experiences waiting just for you.

It comes as no surprise that boats play an important part of life on the Isles of Scilly. They are the best way to get from one island to another and an excellent way to see seals, seabirds and other wildlife. The turquoise seas around the islands make it the ideal place to practice watersport skills or to dip a toe in the water for the first time – whether it’s wild swimming, snorkelling, kayaking or paddle boarding.

Beachcombing and rock pool safaris are family favourites. From cowrie shells to sea glass, there is always treasure to be found on shore, and at low-tide, rockpools become mini-aquariums –all you need is a bucket and a keen eye!

If you fancy a tipple, the islands are home to vineyards and even a gin school, and for foodies, the bounty of the sea is a given, from fish and chips to fresh lobster. We still haven’t mentioned the miles of coastal paths, golf, horse riding, cycling… the list goes on. All these experiences take place in one of the most spectacular and untouched parts of the world you will ever see.

However you choose to travel to the islands, the journey will be as memorable as the destination. Just 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall, welcome to the breathtaking Isles of Scilly.

THRIVING THROUGH history

Hidden in the far west of Cornwall, a variety of unusual, rare and exotic plants can be found thriving in the mild, maritime climate enjoyed by Trewidden Garden.

One of three brothers known as the ‘Merchant Princes of Cornwall’, who made their fortune in banking and the Cornish tin industry, Trewidden was purchased at auction by Edward Bolitho in 1849. His son, Thomas Bedford Bolitho, was a keen horticulturist, bringing the first of the Dicksonia antarctica to the garden. Taking a personal interest, he had the Tree Fern Dell planted, now one of the highlights for most garden visitors.

In 1915 Trewidden became linked by marriage to what would become another of ‘The Great Gardens of Cornwall’ when Mary, Thomas Bedford’s daughter, married Charles Williams of Caerhays. Mary later became an accomplished gardener and corresponded with the curators of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and Edinburgh.

During World War II, Trewidden house had been used as a Red Cross Convalescent home, and each year a reminder of that time blooms in the garden. Springtime visitors are often surprised to see daffodils growing in the lawn by the pond in regimented rows, rather than naturalistic clumps, each standing tall and proud.

Alverne Bolitho, Mary’s cousin, has owned Trewidden since Mary’s death in 1977, and was keen to carry on the tradition to improve the garden whilst respecting its historic legacy. Alverne made the decision to open the garden to the public for the first time in 2002, working with Head Gardener Alison Clough.

Now working with Alverne is Head Gardener Richard Morton, who came to Trewidden in 2007. Having worked and trained in Cornwall, Richard went on to study at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew before coming to Trewidden.

Having discovered some lost rarities, Richard is working to identify and add the entire plant collection onto a plant database. Listing over 300 cultivars of camellia, Trewidden is registered as an ‘International Camellia Society of Excellence’, and while Richard is proud of many of the specimen plants in the garden, his particular passion is the collection of Azaleas, so make sure to pay a visit to see the enchanting collection for yourself!

A SEASON TO REMEMBER

The Rock Gin Distillery has had a busy few months, opening three new retail shops, as well as moving its distillery!

It’s true – Angie and George, the founders of this much-loved Cornish brand, love a challenge. The first of their recent unveilings was a brand-new store in Tintagel. Opened on Friday 5th May, the sweet little shop on the main road running right through Tintagel, Fore Street, hosts the complete range of Cornish Rock Gin’s craft gins and rums, plus glassware, hampers and more. Perfect for anybody in the area exploring the legend of King Arthur, be sure to pop in and grab a bottle or two to remember your day by.

Following the opening in Tintagel, the end of May brought even more buzz and excitement as George and Angie cut the ribbon of their second – and largest – retail store in Bude. Located right in the heart of the town on Lansdown Road, again, you’ll find the complete family of craft gins and rums, plus plenty of giftware including their ‘bling’ glassware.

“As with all our retail locations,” says George, “we have a purpose-built tasting station in Bude where you can relax and enjoy samples of our entire range of 20 craft products, all whilst getting expert advice from our team. So, if you’re looking for somewhere

to visit for the day (or longer!) and you’d love the combination of amazing beaches and the opportunity to try some of the most deliciously smooth craft gin and rum you’re likely to find in Cornwall, why not pop by and see us?”

This is all very impressive, but it’s not all Angie and George have been up to! Not ones to rest on their laurels, with the growing popularity of the Cornish Rock Gin brand, the decision was made to move their production facility to Wadebridge.

“Located in Dunveth Business Park, just minutes from Cornwall Showground, you have the opportunity here once again to see our beautiful display of craft products,” says Angie. “With parking available right outside, if you’re in Wadebridge, or are passing through, we’d love you to come by and say hello. You may even catch a glimpse of our operations team as they meticulously handlabel each of our beautiful bottles.”

Fruits of THE FORAGER

Jude Kereama puts a foodie slant on outdoor adventure, exploring the Lizard Peninsula as a forager’s paradise.

If you’re looking for an outdoor adventure, there’s no better place to go than the Lizard Peninsula. England’s most southerly point, the Lizard is full of gorgeous coastal walks, beautiful beaches with turquoise seas, surf, rivers, hidden coves and woodland. After cycling the peninsula many times, I can certainly vouch for its beauty!

But for me, where it really comes into its own, is in the abundance of ingredients that grow there. With such a diverse landscape, not only is it an adventurer’s playground, it’s also great for creative chefs in search of something truly local, providing a seasonally changing treasure trove of ingredients as varied as the landscape itself.

In the spring – one of my favourite times to forage – you have the emergence of lots of new green ingredients. Wild garlic is up there with the very best of them, however all the green vegetables that grow in the spring are worth taking the time to forage. Things like Alexanders, three-cornered leeks, nettles, chickweed, dandelion, wood sorrel, cleavers and gorse – all of these are in abundance, and there’s lots you can do with them. Mushrooms will also be rearing their heads in the fields and woods, and it’s a great time especially to pick St George mushrooms, field mushrooms, and giant puff balls. These all add a mighty punch of umami when added to dishes, but are equally delicious on their own.

FOODIE 76 | CORNWALL LIVING

Of course, being so close to the sea, there are also plenty of seaweeds and sea vegetables to be found in the spring. In Kota, we love using samphire, rock samphire, purslane, in fact all the seaweeds that we can find! All of them are either dehydrated and turned into powders, added to stocks, pickled, or served lightly blanched in some butter. There are some that must be used sparingly due to their strength of flavour (red pepper dulse is a good example), however when used correctly, there’s nothing quite like it.

Spring is inevitably followed by summer, and this is where we start to see elderflower making an appearance. Delicious when made into a cordial, sorbet, vinegar, or even tempura battered, I can’t think of anybody that doesn’t love the flavour of elderflower!

The summer also sees the emergence of yarrow, meadowsweet, wild rose, and wild berries, not to mention succulents and wild salad leaves in varying forms.

As the autumn rolls around, there is still gold to be found. Cobnuts, blackberries, chestnuts, rosehips, sloes, crab apples, hawthorns and plenty of mushrooms can all be foraged during the autumn months, while winter is a great a time to find quince, apples, nuts, burdock, nettles, even some varieties of salad leaf. Being the leanest of the seasons, it's also the perfect chance to make use of all those ingredients you've pickled during the warmer months!

On top of all of this is the seafood that can be foraged along the rivers and the coastline. Clams, crabs and mussels are, of course, firm favourites for most seafood lovers. We can also find oysters, razor clams, scallops, winkles, and other shellfish species, all of which can be easily collected if you know where to look. Having said that, a forager will never willingly give away where they forage, or else everyone will pick from the same spots, so for this reason I am going to keep my own spots secret! However, there are guides in the area who can help you experience a day’s foraging. Caroline Davey is one – from The Fat Hen Wild Cookery

School – offering locals and visitors alike the chance to experience a foraging trip, before being given the chance to cook what they’ve found.

If you’ve never tried it before, I’d highly recommend taking the time to go foraging. There’s an immense sense of satisfaction to be taken from foraging and preparing your own ingredients. Even as I write, I’m thinking about freshly picked mussels with wild garlic broth – gin and tonic in hand made with my very own elderflower cordial.

A fresh collection by Cornish artist Kurt Jackson

Kurt Jackson’s latest breathtaking collection

The Fowey opens on 2nd September at the Jackson Foundation, St Just, recently named ‘Best Art Gallery in Cornwall’ for the third year in a row.

One of Britain’s most respected artists, Jackson is a dedicated environmentalist and true polymath; his holistic approach to his subject seamlessly blends art and politics to create a hugely varied body of work unconstrained by format or scale. Jackson’s artistic practice ranges from his trademark visceral plein-air sessions to studio work, embracing an extensive range of materials and techniques including mixed media, large canvases, print-making, the written word and sculpture.

The Fowey sees Jackson follow the River Fowey over its 27-mile course as it winds

through mid-Cornwall, joining together numerous familiar and iconic locations. The provider of most of Cornwall’s drinking water, the Fowey is a place for wildlife, agriculture and recreation.

It’s an attractive route, linking moorland, villages and valleys before its final tidal stretch down to Fowey town. Temperate rainforest, salmon ladders, ancient-woodland, estuary mudflats, creeks, maritime cliffs – an extraordinary voyage. It was all there, just waiting to be painted. Kurt Jackson’s The Fowey opens on 2nd September at the multi-award-winning Jackson Foundation Gallery, St Just.

His work is a result of an emotional response to the landscape where composition and mark making play an important role in the execution of the work.

THE MAGIC OF THE SEA

Mike Lacey, owner of Waves Gallery in Porthleven, has been capturing breathtaking photos of the sea for over 10 years, from gentle ripples of calm waters to the crashing swells of stormy seas. Each wave tells its own story. Mike contends with unpredictable elements, like wind, tide, and even lighting, to preserve the moments of these transient waves. The challenge lies in capturing the essence of a wave – the grace and elegance in its movement, the iridescence of the water, and the exhilarating feeling of being surrounded by such immense power. In a revolutionary way to combine the art of wave photography with interior design, transforming your home into a tranquil haven

EXPERIENCE

By harnessing the brilliance of modern technology and the creativity of Mike’s talent, HD Metal splashbacks continue to redefine the boundaries of artistic expression. Why not let the radiance of a Cornish wave splashback grace your home and bring a touch of modern elegance to your space? Easy to clean, and highly durable, the toughened glass can provide a long-lasting solution for protecting your walls. You needn’t be restricted to standard sizes or proportions; simply give Mike and the team the measurements you require and they’ll create a bespoke backdrop for your perfect kitchen or bathroom.

You can find Waves Gallery nestled in the heart of Porthleven, overlooking the boats in the harbour head. The two-story gallery captivates ocean waves and coastal scenes in a calm and inviting atmosphere that allows visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of the ocean.

ACornwall-based Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Yoga Teacher, Dr Alicia Ray finds spending time outdoors is essential for maintaining a state of positive health. After spending time in Sri Lanka and completing Yoga Teacher Training in the Philippines and Costa Rica, experiencing immense benefits to her wellbeing, she came to develop a holistic approach that incorporates connecting with nature together with ideas and practices from Eastern and Western philosophies.

“Sometimes the simplest intervention can be the most powerful,” Alicia explains. “Stepping outside, taking a deep breath, looking out to the horizon, or listening to the sound of waves can have a profound impact on shifting energy and moving us out of a stuck mindset.”

Having worked as a psychologist across mental and physical health for 19 years in the NHS, Alicia understands the important relationship between body and mind. Her holistic approach encourages us to listen to our bodies intuitively, find balance in lifestyle and become more compassionate towards ourselves, on which she kindly elaborates: “Spending time in the outdoor world enables us to connect to the present moment and notice the subtleties that can often get missed or neglected such as how we feel, how we are in our bodies, where our energy is and what we might need to be able to look after ourselves in that moment. Being

in nature, tuning in to body and mind and feeling the energy of the elements has the power to shift our mood and energy and feel a positive connection to our environment.”

Alicia offers Cornwall-based yoga classes, online yoga and one-to-one yoga therapy, as well as workshops and international retreats where guests are facilitated to connect to body and mind with yoga, sound healing and guided breathwork sessions, as well as a variety of outdoor and coastal wellbeing practices including water immersion, coastal hikes, sea swimming, surfing, waterfall dips and outdoor meditation.

Throughout the summer season you’ll find Alicia teaching yoga on the beach. Gwithian Beach Yoga (now into its sixth season) has become a well-established community practice, bringing like-minded people together to practice yoga by the sea, a friendly and inclusive class that is open to all. For information on Alicia’s upcoming Cornwall retreat at St Nectan's Glen from 1st to 3rd September, make sure to head online!

A world

OF WONDER

Just a stone's throw from the bustling beaches of Newquay, Newquay Orchard is a natural oasis; a magical place where children can run free amongst the wildflowers and enjoy the wonders of nature up close.

This summer, the Orchard comes alive with a series of delightful live performances in its outdoor amphitheatre. The programme offers family shows featuring beloved characters like Peter Rabbit and Dr Dolittle, alongside Shakespearean classics and The Great Gatsby. There's music from Cornish shanty singers to big band jazz and ribtickling comedy with the likes of Hollie McNish and the Kernow King!

With community and wellbeing at its heart, Newquay Orchard’s principle is that nature is intrinsically linked with our health, and that taking time to be in nature is healing and energising. You can join a yoga class, sound healing and meditation, as well as Imagine Outdoors, a wonderful group focused on re-wilding kids at the Den in the woods.

The grassy terrace offers a unique opportunity to enjoy live performances

surrounded by wild meadows. The on-site café is open daily (before and during the shows), serving up food with heart and soul using produce grown from the Orchard’s very own market gardens. The café provides affordable, nutritious and delicious meals, so bring a picnic rug or eat in the café – the friendly staff and twinkling festoon lights add to the welcoming atmosphere, making you feel right at home.

So, whether you're a Cornwall resident or a summer visitor calling Cornwall home for a week or two, Newquay Orchard promises a memorable experience that will leave its magical mark on you. Gather your crew, pack your picnic blanket, and prepare to be restored and enchanted at Newquay Orchard.

However, if you’re looking to make the most of the day, one way to take in the stunning scenery and fun local attractions is by opentop bus! There is no better way to get around Cornwall and soak up the sights than on an Adventures by Bus ‘open topper’ as they wind their way around popular destinations such as Land’s End, Sennen, St Ives, Newquay, Falmouth, Padstow and more.

At incredible value, you can hop on and hop off at your convenience as you visit all the attractions along the way. Why not try out the Atlantic Coaster route, traversing the stunning coastline between the popular and well-loved Cornish coastal towns of Newquay and Padstow? Here you can pay a visit to Newquay Zoo, Blue Reef Aquarium or the National Lobster Hatchery.

The Land’s End Coaster route showcases rugged coastlines, mining heritage sites, harbour towns and one of Britain’s best

known and most popular landmarks, Land’s End itself, not to mention the Minack Theatre and St Michael’s Mount. If Falmouth is more your bag, the Falmouth Coaster is a great and simple way to navigate your way round this pretty Cornish town and the surrounding area. Why not check out Cornwall's National Maritime Museum, Pendennis Castle or Swanpool Beach?

The Sunseeker, however, will get you into St Ives, Newquay, or to any of the fabulous beaches along the way on the amazing stretch of Cornwall’s spectacular Atlantic coast, stopping off at places like Paradise Park, Tate St Ives and Crantock beach. Or, if you’re looking for a little Cornish heritage, the Tin Coaster provides a quick ride out of Penzance to St Just, Geevor Tin Mine or Pendeen.

Whichever route you choose this summer, you’re in for a ride to remember with Adventures by Bus.

LOOKING back

With a new project in the works this summer, the Museum of Cornish Life looks back on times gone by for Cornish farmers.

Housing a wide-ranging collection through which we can share in stories of life in Cornwall, Helston’s Museum of Cornish Life can be found in the town’s former market buildings. The collection on display ranges wildly in size, from the smallest item (a dice made from the tooth of a lion) to the largest – the historic building itself!

Led by Annette MacTavish, the museum’s Director, this wonderful museum is always looking for new ways to share what it has to offer, and to make it as welcoming as possible to as many people as possible. When the museum first opened its doors in 1949 the newspaper headline read “Farmers will like it”.

“This summer,” Annette explains, “the museum is embarking on a project led by Dr Tehmina Goskar to better reflect Cornish farming from the 1970s to today. As the project moves forward, we will be carrying out most of the work in public so visitors can speak to us while we document the collection, undertake preventive conservation and think about new interpretation.” This is all being made possible thanks to an award of £78,000 from the Museums Association Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund.

Annette continues: “While the museum displays objects related to working life from farming to fishing to mining, the main focus remains on everyday items. We specialise in the things people owned and loved. As you look around the museum, you will see objects that remind you of things people you know have used in their life. The museum is home to things used and loved, not boxed up and kept for special occasions. It’s why we can see people in the things we share, and why the museum is so special.”

Over the summer, the museum is running free weekly making activities for families on Monday afternoons and Thursday mornings to tie in with the summer exhibition Can You See Me, alongside activity trails for all ages. The museum is free to visit and open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

CONFIDENCESmiling with

It might be that you don't like the way they look, they're stopping you from eating the foods you love, or they’re even affecting the way you talk. However they may be affecting you, missing or failing teeth can really affect your confidence, preventing you from sharing your smile and enjoying the simple pleasures in life. However, Portman Dental Care offer a solution that could bring back your smile.

Whether you want to replace a single tooth or a complete smile, dental implants offer a long-term solution for missing or failing teeth. They'll improve your ability to speak and chew, and look and feel just like your natural teeth.

But what exactly is a dental implant? It’s a titanium attachment that’s placed where the teeth used to be, replacing your missing tooth root. After it’s fitted, the bone surrounding your implant will gradually integrate with it, holding the implant firmly in place. A false tooth (a crown) which matches the colour and shape of your existing teeth is then fitted to the top of the implant, leaving you with a fixed solution and a natural looking smile.

“Words can’t describe the way our patients look and feel after they have had

dental implant treatment with us,” says CEO, Sam Waley-Cohen. “One thing we're certain of is that everyone we have cared for ends up with a brand-new smile that they're proud of. Worrying about what other people think, how you look, what you can and cannot eat, and how you sound – becomes a thing of the past.”

One happy client shares her experience: "I can only applaud the superb staff for restoring my confidence (it’s very depressing losing a front tooth) and hope that other patients having doubts about the procedures will take the first step and be assured that they can have complete faith in the team’s advice and skills. Many thanks for putting a smile back on my face."

LITTLE CARSAWSEN, MYLOR

Little Carsawsen has been owned/occupied by the same family for over 100 years, hence its availability to the market is a unique occasion. In many respects it is a typical two bedroom Cornish cottage with a range of single storey outbuildings but its warm, south-facing position on the rural edge of Mylor Bridge is very appealing. The property adjoins the minor road leading from Carclew to Mylor Bridge, but the cottage and old farm buildings are secluded in over one acre of mature gardens and grounds and enjoy a high level of privacy and detachment from neighbours. There is a huge potential to create a fabulous home in a highly regarded residential locality where opportunities of this nature are at a premium. High hedges and trees provide shelter and privacy and a warm mature ambience. A pedestrian gate leads into the front garden from the road and areas of lawn with established shrubs, perennials and roses as well as a splendid monkey puzzle tree. From here, there is access through to a separate grassed enclosure and this in turn leads to a former vegetable garden and orchard with two mature fruit trees. On the other side of the entrance driveway there is a small paddock dominated by a mature Ash tree and ornamental Myrtle.

SHARING the love

There’s nothing quite as satisfying as a perfectly cut, green and thriving lawn, whether it be the pride and joy of your back garden, or a shared space made for picnics and playing. Either way, it can be difficult to get your lawn to this point, and even harder to maintain!

As part of their current ‘Share The Lawn Love’ campaign, GreenThumb (the UK’s most recommended lawn care service) has provided a year’s worth of free lawn treatments to 160 UK residents who were nominated by their friends, family or neighbours. The campaign generated over 700 nominations, and the lucky winners are in the best of hands when it comes to lawn care.

The nomination process saw communal green spaces in high demand for transformations, with the likes of schools, churches and sports grounds receiving 23% of nominations in the hope of enriching the local community. The diverse range of recipients include the residents at Clifton Gardens, Truro, who have a communal garden used for a wide range of games and gatherings, and a gentleman from St Ives whose garden is his pride and joy.

“With everything that’s happening in the world outside our control, more and more people are turning to their gardens, local green spaces and nature for quite literal grounding,” says Paul Edwards, Managing

Director at GreenThumb. “We’re proud to be able to help local people at a time when transforming lawns into green sanctuaries will have an even greater impact on the wellbeing of the recipients.”

In partnership with the National Garden Scheme and Scotland’s Gardens Scheme, GreenThumb are advocates for the physical and mental health benefits gardens provide and are hoping this campaign will allow them to spread the personal and sustainable wins that green spaces offer.

The campaign has seen plenty of nominations for deserving neighbours who have grown closer as a result of the pandemic, and now want to lend a helping hand. Perhaps unsurprisingly though, family and friends nominating their loved ones was the most common occurrence, with almost three quarters off all nominations keen to give back to those closest to them for a whole host of heart-warming reasons.

To find out more about the ‘Share The Lawn Love’ campaign, make sure to head online!
