Welcome

From the Editor

to the August edition of Cornwall Living!

Member of:

Cornwall's seafaring and sailing history is as eminent as it is eclectic. From pirates to packet ships, crabbers to shrimpers, day boats to sail boats, the waters around our coast offer a veritable ocean playground to those afloat. Cornwall's maritime town, Falmouth, is the hub of all things nautical. Its docks, run by A&P Falmouth, form the largest ship-repair complex in the UK and also a busy working port. Smaller yachts and boats are well catered for at Falmouth Marina or nearby in Mylor, while numerous dinghies and day boats can launch from the town's central slip. In celebration of its nautical heritage, this summer Falmouth will be hosting some exciting racing events and shoreside celebrations. Turn to page 17, as I look ahead to a month of on-the-water action. We've also been visiting some of our favourite businesses around the town, which you can discover from page 45

If you're looking to stay in Falmouth then St Michaels Resort (page 38) is just a short stroll from the seafront and town. Its brand-new spa lodges are the ultimate in indulgence, while the hotel boasts ocean-inspired bedrooms and boat-to-plate seafood delights in its restaurant. Culinary delights also abound at Kota (page 48), in the nearby harbour town of Porthleven. We catch up with newly appointed Head Chef, Ross Sloan, whose exquisite small plates menu is already receiving high praise.

PROUD TO BE PART OF

Moving from artistry on a plate to creativity on canvas, our dedicated arts section this month begins by taking a deep dive into the work of artist Emily Penfold (page 57), as she explores the delicacy of that which lies beneath the surface. We then meet Steve Slimm (page 63), whose new collection of originals, gifts and accessories highlights a deep connection to the natural environment, as well as celebrating Cornwall's unique quality of light. Art in a different form comes into focus as we visit Justin Duance's jewellery workshop (page 72). Also taking inspiration from Cornwall's landscape, each piece is carefully crafted with the opportunity to personalise with sand or wood.

This month, there is also the chance to win a host of fabulous prizes. From page 67, enter one of our competitions and you could be enjoying a week's stay in St Ives, relaxing in a Falmouth hotel, tasting some top Cornish tipples or stepping out in style in knitwear from an award-winning Cornish fashion boutique. You have to be in it to win it, so be sure to get your entries in soon.

...happy reading!

A cooling solution

With the heat of summer in full swing, are you finding yourself battling to keep your home cool and comfortable? If so, you may be interested to know that shutters provide a stylish and timeless solution to your temperature control needs. In the summer months, they help to keep the heat of the sun and warm air out – making it easier for you to stay cool.

What’s more, unlike traditional curtains, shutters are available in a wide range of styles to help you control the amount of light you would like to let into your room, allowing you to spend time in your home in the summer months without needing to compromise by sitting in darkness. Full-height or tier-on-tier shutters are an ideal option to help you achieve this.

On the flip side, when wintertime comes around, the solid hardwood material of

shutters will provide an insulating layer between you and your window opening, helping you to block out draughts and make your home more energy efficient. At Shuttercraft, the team’s made-to-measure service ensures you’ve got every nook and cranny covered.

If you’re ready to explore whether shutters will be the next new feature in your home this summer, they’d love to hear from you. Get in touch to book your free survey today. Their no-hard-sell promise guarantees you an informative but relaxed experience, with no pressure to buy – just friendly advice, as and when you need it.

Newly launched, the Pizza Shack, Bar & Terrace at Harbour Hotel St Ives has hard-to-beat panoramic views, soaking in the vista of Porthminster beach and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.

On the menu, pizzas take centre stage and are freshly made with Executive Chef, John Pollard’s own pizza dough recipe, topped with the finest Cornish ingredients and stone-baked to perfection. For seafood lovers, the signature pizza is mouth-wateringly good, topped with lashings of crab, crayfish and mussels, and drizzled in a lobster aioli.

If pizza isn’t your bag, then you can also choose from a selection of classics including the popular Harbour Fish and Chips and chunky club sandwiches, or you can opt to dine inside the hotel’s Harbour Kitchen, which offers relaxed all-day dining and an indulgent Cornish afternoon tea.

Show garden gift to Cornish charity

Newquay based Garden Designer, Kim Parish, along with garden design company, Landscapes of Distinction, recently unveiled a very special garden, The Fontana Contemplation Garden, at this year’s BBC Gardener’s World Live at the NEC, Birmingham. Kim, working with 91-yearsyoung Derek Bishop of Kearn Estates, helped him to realise his life-long ambition to be part of a show garden.

“I’m passionate about the power of nature and the support and comfort it can provide,” says Kim. “Derek and I have worked with Cornwall Hospice Care to produce this special gift. The garden will offer quiet contemplation and features a treetop room, two intimate seating areas and a beautiful pool. For patients with more limited mobility, the garden can be seen from bedrooms and the patient lounge.”

Hall for Cornwall launches its classical concert series

The garden celebrates Cornwall and its famed beautiful gardens. Gina Starnes, Director of Clinical Services at Cornwall Hospice Care, says: “We’re extremely humbled by Derek Bishop’s generous donation of the garden to our Mount Edgcumbe Hospice, where it will offer a place of solace and comfort for our patients, their families, our staff and volunteers.”

For more information visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk

The series begins as BBC Proms returns to Cornwall on 27th August, featuring the debut of The Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective. Two weeks later, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Tom Fetherstonhaugh, presents works by Borodin, Rachmaninov, Akimenko, and Beethoven. BSO returns in March 2024, conducted by Mark Wigglesworth, to present Verdi, Chopin, and Beethoven. Joby Burgess, a percussionist extraordinaire, performs his vibrant album on 8th October followed by Academy of Ancient Music, celebrating its 50th anniversary on 1st November.

2024 opens with Welsh National Opera Orchestra’s New Year Concert on 6th January. The season concludes with a visit from BBC Singers in their centenary year on 9th May, paying tribute to John Betjeman.

Falmouth has a venerable history as a sea-faring town. Known as the UK’s Atlantic gateway, its port and docks were established over 160 years ago. Together with the Carrick Roads, it is the third deepest natural harbour in the world, and the deepest in Western Europe. Falmouth is no stranger to epic events, having been the start or finish point for several round-theworld record breaking attempts, including those of Sir William Robert, Pat “Robin” Knox-Johnston and Dame Ellen MacArthur. With such a maritime pedigree, it’s no wonder that the town hosts a series of popular, and hugely successful, sailing and shore-side events throughout the summer.

The UKOPRA ‘Cornish 100’ Offshore Powerboat Race heralds the start of this year’s on-the-water events on Saturday 29th July.

Managed by the Falmouth-based Eastwood Racing, Director Gary is a true ambassador of the sport and has worked hard to bring the event to Falmouth for the second year running. Their own boat, Vintage Torque is a

class-1, which can exceed 100mph on a good day! This year looks set to be bigger and better than ever with more boats competing and increased onshore participation. If you’ve never experienced the thrill of off-shore powerboat racing, we can highly recommend it – V8 noise, speed and rooster tails of spray are guaranteed!

The boats will leave at 12 noon from the wet pits (to the rear of the National Maritime Museum Falmouth) and slowly parade past Falmouth Docks, Pendennis Point and across to Gyllyngvase beach. Racing starts at 12.30 with the boats heading east on the 90Nm course up as far as Eddystone lighthouse and close to Plymouth harbour, past Fowey and then returning to Falmouth. The starter’s gun goes off for Falmouth Week on Friday 4th August 2023. Kicking off the excitement is the ever-popular Pink Wig charity event, raising money for the Breast Care Team at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro, and Breast Cancer Now, nationally. Throngs of pink-wiggers parade the streets of Falmouth before joining together for a Pyjama Party with a difference in the Falmouth Week marquee! There are shore-side events galore happening throughout the week, with something for everyone to enjoy. From daredevil sports shows to an extensive programme of music events, Falmouth Week is a must-visit for locals and visitors alike. You can also discover some great shops along the high streets in our Falmouth Feature on page 45

Saturday 5th August is when Sailing Week gets underway. Watch yachts, day boats and dragon boats battle it out in the waters of Falmouth Bay and the Carrick Roads. Many competitors combine the racing with their annual family holiday, such is the prestige of this Cornish regatta, showcasing top-flight competition in a fun and welcoming atmosphere. You don’t have to be on the water to experience the thrill of the race… there are numerous viewing points along the banks of the River Fal, or head to Pendennis headland, and in particular the ramparts of Henry VIII’s Pendennis Castle for a bird’s eye view of the fleet.

The Bay Fleet races in 15 square miles of open water outside the harbour and comprises Firebird catamaran, IRC and YTC (South West Yacht Time Correction) yachts.

LIVING

The Carrick Fleet races in the lower estuary and, weather permitting, may also venture a short distance outside the harbour mouth, beyond Black Rock. Classes comprise Ajax, Shrimper 19, Sunbeam, Falmouth Working Boat, Falmouth Gaffer, Piper OD / Rustler 24, and YTC. There’s a special long-distance race held on the Wednesday for the Carrick Fleet, the Mainbrace Rum Race, sponsored very aptly by a local distillery. Local sailing clubs take it in turns to host the various days of racing with the prestigious Champagne Race for offshore yachts, also held on the Wednesday, always a highlight.

If all this wasn’t enough on-water action, this year will also see the return of the Tall Ships Race, Magellan Elcano from 15th to 18th August. This won’t be the first time these majestic vessels have graced Falmouth’s waters – they have been here six times before – but it will be the first time in nine years that we are again able to see them race. The visit has been made possible by the hardworking Town Team (the award-winning collaboration between Falmouth Town Council and Falmouth BID). Richard Gates,

Falmouth Town Manager comments: “It’s a welcome return for the Tall Ships Races, after it was postponed in 2020, and 2021, due to Covid restrictions. Our town’s history is intertwined with these magnificent vessels so you could say they are coming home!

We’re really excited to be the venue for the start of the races. As always, we look forward to the truly awe-inspiring spectacle of the tall ships as they sail into the harbour.”

Visitors will have the opportunity to board some of the historic tall ships as they will be sited within the A&P Falmouth Docks. Tickets can be secured via the See Tickets website, or by scanning QR code below. The Falmouth Harbour Commissioners, as in previous events, will provide exceptional ‘on the water’ logistical management. Miles Carden, CEO of Falmouth Harbour Commissioners said: ”The Tall Ships Race is an unrivalled opportunity to showcase our amazing harbour to visitors, operators and future investors. The economic impact is significant and is felt across many sectors but in particular it highlights the marine powerhouse that Falmouth has become. We look forward to welcoming these incredible vessels to the UK’s Atlantic gateway and the many visitors that will enjoy the harbour during the event.”

The global Tall Ships Races are organised by Sail Training International. The race itself will be preceded by a stunning Parade of Sail and several days’ worth of celebratory shoreside events. Once underway, the tall ships race follows a course from Falmouth to A Coruña in Spain, then onward to Portugal’s capital, Lisbon before finishing in Cadiz, Spain. Whether under power or sail, this summer’s maritime events in Falmouth should be on everyone’s calendar.

A LIFETIMEOnce in

One of Cornwall’s most celebrated estates, with a Grade II-listed Georgian manor house set within approximately 233 acres, has come to the market for the first time in 99 years, and for only the second time in its 300-year history, through national property consultancy Carter Jonas.

With a rich heritage dating back to the mining history of Cornwall, The Chyverton Estate’s elegant manor house, originally built in 1730, is surrounded by mature, native woodlands and farmland rich in biodiversity, private tracks and pathways, two lodge houses, a stable block, a walled garden, undulating pasture and a famous cross-country equestrian course. This is truly the stuff of dreams.

The exceptional property is available as a whole or in lots, so whether you want the entire estate package or just a little piece

of paradise, your dream can be catered for. Chyverton House, with its beautiful gardens and swimming pool complex, the stable block, lodge houses, walled garden, equestrian course, pastureland and mature woodland within approximately 160 acres, is the first lot. The second lot, of nearly 73 acres, comprises mature woodland, level pastureland and the remains of a cottage, brimming with romantic potential.

The manor house is built with the classic proportions and timeless appeal of the Georgian era and enjoys an elevated and imposing position overlooking the parkland gardens and surrounding woodland. Its soft red-brick front façade, unusual for a house of this significance within Cornwall, adds a homely appeal to the property, a feeling that continues throughout its interior, which radiates charm and comfort.

LIFESTYLE 26 | CORNWALL LIVING
Carter Jonas is delighted to present a truly exceptional opportunity for those looking to own a little piece of Cornish history.

Extending to approximately 11,000 sq ft, the house was largely remodelled in the mid-1800s and has been sensitively and gently enhanced over recent years. Of particular note is the drawing room, including an 18th-century iron fireplace, much admired by Sir John Betjeman on his many visits to Chyverton. This delightful room at the front of the house also has large French doors opening onto a sun-drenched al-fresco dining area with paths leading down to the swimming pool area, overlooking the ponds.

Chris Anderson, who is leading the sale from the Carter Jonas Truro office, says: “Chyverton Estate really is one of the most enchanting properties the county has to offer; it has a magnetic appeal. The grand, light-filled rooms of the main house are complemented by its surrounding parkland. Magnificent oak and beech trees and beautiful shrubs such as Camellia, Rhododendron and Magnolia encircle the property, naturally preserving its privacy. It is little wonder that this is only the second time in its history that it has come on the market. It is a true haven that has been managed in tune with nature.”

The manor house features six principal bedrooms and a centrally positioned entrance hallway with access to all areas of the house, including the drawing room, kitchen and dining room. The right wing of the property is dominated by an enormous family room, formally used as a billiards room, with an impressive fireplace and surround.

The left wing has been sensitively refurbished to provide a self-contained two-bedroom, twostorey annexe, including a wood-panelled library using early 18th-century oak panelling that originated from Harlyn House, near Padstow. Neo-classical plasterwork on the walls and ceilings is present throughout the house, especially around the open-well staircase with its cast-iron balustrade.

The lower ground floor enjoys independent external access and window wells. These details ensure that this level benefits from extensive natural light. This area, and six unused attic rooms on the second floor, would allow the accommodation to be vastly enhanced without any alterations to the external elevations.

“Chyverton presents a unique opportunity to the market,” Chris adds. “An estate and country house that somehow manages to create a sense of intimacy, one that is befitting of the generations who have lived in and loved every aspect of this wonderful property.”

Located in central Cornwall, Chyverton Estate is within striking distance of the city of Truro. It has excellent access to the county’s north and south coasts, the former being just four miles away (a ten-minute drive), where a variety of watersports, including sailing and surfing, are available. Truro has a range of professional services, employment, retail and leisure opportunities, alongside cultural activities driven by Truro Cathedral and the recently refurbished Hall for Cornwall. The city has a number of private and state schools for all ages and is home to the Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske.

Offered for sale at an asking price of £6M, contact the team at Carter Jonas for all enquiries and any further information on this incredible piece of Cornish history.

MOVING Get

If you’re planning a move, then there is a business that’s been tried and trusted for 50 years, and its team are the experts in this field. Helping both domestic and commercial clients with removals and containerised storage throughout Cornwall, M.J. Christophers & Son has succeeded across three generations through the age-old virtues of excellent value and unrivalled customer service.

It has to be said that moving house, be it to or from Cornwall, is one of life’s most stressful experiences. There’s lots to think about, and when it comes to moving day, placing your treasured possessions into the hands of somebody else and entrusting their safe transit can leave many tearing their hair out. It’s reassuring, then, to know that there is a company out there who can help, and not just with the move from ‘a’ to ‘b’, either! As you move out of your former home, the transition period can often leave you needing to store your entire family’s belongings before being handed the keys to your new house.

If you’re still unsure, why not click through to the ‘Storage’ page of the website? You’ll soon see that the team can take care of that for you, too! They’ll load your items into an empty container at your home before storing it at their facility, where the most up-to-date security systems are all in place. These include smoke detectors and CCTV, keeping your belongings safe and sound until you’re ready to move in.

Perhaps you’re moving abroad? If so, M.J. Christophers & Son have, over 50 years of business, developed a network of agents around the world, each working to the same exacting standards. They can take care of all removal documentation and even offer full liability cover, whilst undertaking quality export packing by professionally trained staff.

Finally, wherever you’re moving, and whatever you’re taking with you, one of the biggest headaches is almost always packing. To help, M.J. Christophers & Son offer a full or part packing service. Alternatively, you can apply for a free starter pack, which includes quality packing materials ensuring your most prized possessions are kept safe and secure in transit.

To find out more we suggest you visit their website where you’ll find a ‘Helpful Hints and Tips on Moving Home’ sheet, as well as a ‘Moving Check List’. With a website arming you with all the information you’re likely to need, in addition to a host of first-class reviews from countless happy customers, M.J. Christophers & Son are the removal company of choice.

With the future in mind, not to mention energy price uncertainty, more people than ever are switching to air-source heating. With a £5,000 grant under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme readily available, and the cost of fuel like oil and gas fluctuating, we spoke with Neil Rollinson of GreenGenUK to find out exactly what we can do about it.

“Air-source heating is the ideal renewable upgrade for anyone looking to replace their existing fossil fuel boiler,” says Neil. “Disruption is minimal and with the £5,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme available, the upfront costs of installing a heat pump are now similar to that of oil or gas systems.”

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides upfront funding to homeowners looking to install renewable heating, with a £5,000 lump sum towards the cost of installation. “Here at GreenGenUK, we deal with the application and then the grant money is deducted from what the customer pays,” Neil explains. “With homes needing to meet just a small number of eligibility criteria, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is open to everyone.”

Air-source heat pumps supply all of a property’s heating and hot water, completely replacing the original system. When running with radiators, modern heat pumps installed by GreenGenUK achieve in excess of 400% efficiency. Not only does this make them affordable to run, but also creates a carbon

saving of several tonnes a year. What’s more, a constant, ambient temperature will permeate your property, avoiding highs and lows, an alternative that is cost effective, better for the building’s fabric and creates a more comfortable living environment. It seems like a no-brainer!

We ask Neil, who’s worked with GreenGenUK for almost a decade, to tell us a little bit more about the process: “The key to all heat pump installations is design. We start with a heat loss calculation that forms the basis of our proposal. A well-sized, well-installed heat pump is key. We offer free advice, free surveys and free proposals to anybody considering making the switch. We aim to keep our customers fully informed and to make the upgrade to renewable heating as stress free as possible”.

Cornwall-based GreenGenUK is among the South West’s leading sustainable energy experts. With free advice and proposals, why not contact their team of experts today to discuss the options for upgrading your home with renewable heating?

AND PLANET People

Cornish Cottage Holidays, part of the Sykes Holiday Cottages family, is celebrating the group’s recent B Corp certification!

Achieving B Corp certification is an impressive feat, and for Sykes Holiday Cottages, it marks a major milestone in the agency’s mission to make a positive contribution to its people, the planet, and the communities it serves.

No doubt it’s down, in no small part, to their key values – to always provide an honest and efficient service, ensuring owners get the advice they need to make the right choices for them and for the communities in which their holiday home is located.

For those who don’t know, ‘B Corp’ recognises ethical businesses that combine profit with purpose. To achieve certification, businesses must reach high standards for social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency, in factors ranging from employee benefits and charitable giving, to supply chain practises and input materials.

As one of Cornwall’s largest holiday letting agencies, Cornish Cottage Holidays has over 700 holiday homes across the county. The team, based in Redruth, have more than 50 years’ experience in the industry, helping thousands of holidaymakers make lasting memories every year, and they’re incredibly proud to have been part of the Sykes Holiday Cottages family since 2017.

As a group, 2023 has already seen the launch of a number of environmental and social impact pledges, including a commitment to reducing its carbon emissions by at least 50% by 2023, and reaching net zero by 2050, as well as achieving Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Business accreditation by the end of 2024. But it’s not just these commitments that the Cornish Cottage Holidays team are focusing on, with

volunteering days at local charities and fundraising for the 2023 nominated good cause, The Wave Project, also taking high priority.

Every B Corp is scored based on five impact areas within the assessment. Demonstrating its commitment to placing the wellbeing of its employees front and centre, the Sykes Holiday Cottages family scored particularly highly within the workers impact pillar in recognition of contributions to its employees financial security, health and safety, wellness, career development, and engagement and satisfaction.

“This means so much to our small, close-knit team here in Redruth,” says Phil Pascoe, operations manager at Cornish Cottage Holidays. “From the volunteering days we complete each year, to the fundraising work we do for local charities – even the Christmas calendar we work on with local schools in the run up to December – it all has culminated in this success.”

Graham Donoghue, CEO of Sykes Holiday Cottages, shares Phil’s sentiment. “This certification by B Corp is the culmination of years of hard work throughout our team to ensure we are consistently meeting the highest possible standards of social and environmental performance. We’re thrilled to have achieved certification, solidifying our commitment to ensuring our impact on people and the planet is as important to us as shareholder profit.”

ARRANGEMENT

With Cornwall’s natural beauty making it an irresistible summer destination, boutique hotels and holiday homes are seeing the benefits of using Bryluen Flowers to invigorate their indoor spaces.

For those who want to give their guests a home-from-home experience, while also creating a place that captures and complements the Cornish identity, a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers really brings together all the elements of your interior design. Bryluen Flowers offers a perfect way to welcome your holiday guests without the cost of maintaining or replacing flowers weekly. These fresh flowers, carefully selected and preserved to last all season, look as fresh at the end of the season as the day you purchased them.

“The Bryluen website described the tea rose accurately, but upon receipt of the item, our expectations were exceeded,” share the delighted owners of Sea Fever, St Ives. “The tea rose is beautiful. We’ve only had it a week (and they last a year) but are amazed by how lovely it is. We have it in a white vase in our bathroom and friends and family have commented how beautiful it is. We have now placed an additional order as the product is exceptional. Service received from the time of ordering to delivery was excellent. Thank you.”

Bryluen flowers are allergy-free, so all guests can still enjoy the beauty of the outdoors inside whilst avoiding those pesky hay fever symptoms. These gorgeous summer bouquets really lift the room, providing a great way to relax and impress your guests while at the same time contributing to Cornwall’s focus on sustainable tourism.

St Ives-based, Bryluen Flowers offers a complete end-to-end managed service through lettings agencies or directly to homeowners. Hand delivery and arrangement of the bouquet at your home is included, and what’s more, Cornwall Living readers can enjoy a 15% discount on the range. Simply head online and see the new Cornwall Living range of bouquets, choose your arrangement, and enter CORNLIV15 when you check out. Alternatively, call the team on 01736 217101 and they will help you design your very own bouquet for your home.

OF PEOPLE The importance

It’s perhaps never been more apparent in business that you’re only as good as your people. People make the world go round; having the right people on board, who share your vision, your creativity, your drive to push the envelope, and your standards of work, can make a good business a great one. One man who fully understands this is Jude Kereama, owner of Porthleven restaurants, Kota and Kota Kai.

The food found at each establishment, whilst different in style and catering to different guests, is the result of great people –of talented chefs in the kitchen, and equally talented front-of-house staff bringing it to the table. Ross Sloan, Jude’s new Head Chef at Kota, is a prime example of this, his approach to and appreciation of good food dovetailing beautifully with Jude’s goal to provide the ultimate hospitality experience for visitors to Porthleven. We catch up with Ross and gain an insight into his role, what he’s doing differently, and how he feels about the world of Cornish cuisine.

Starting his career as a chef in hotels in Stratford-Upon-Avon and London, Ross later

moved to Cornwall, where he took over the Halzephron Inn at the age of 21. Here, he says:

“I gained Dining Pub of the Year twice – in 2001 and again in 2004.” That’s an impressive start for any chef, and it wasn’t long before Ross found himself working aboard super yachts and in the private household industry, where his considered approach to food won the hearts of those who appreciate the very finest things in life. With that frontier conquered, he set his sights on London again, opening a Bohemianstyle restaurant in Camden called Boho. Whilst he was working in one of the foodie capitals of the world, there was, nevertheless, a magnetic draw to return to the Duchy and pick up where he’d left off. “Cornwall has always pulled me back,” he explains, “and so before long I moved back to take over the role of Head Chef at the late Mount Haven Hotel, where we achieved awards such as Best Foodie Hotel and Best Hotel.”

His history in Cornwall goes even further than that. In fact, we learn that as well as Mount Haven and before it, the Halzephron, Ross had actually already spent some time in the role of Head Chef at Kota almost a decade

FOODIE 48 | CORNWALL LIVING
Introducing Ross Sloan – new Head Chef at Kota Restaurant, Porthleven.

ago! “So,” he laughs, “I’ve come back to where I started. Jude and I go way back. When he came to me the second time around, I was already filling in at Kota as a temp, and his current Head Chef at the time, Pete Almond, was planning to relocate back to Australia. I was ready to take the position again.”

On working with Jude, Ross explains: “It’s always fun being in the kitchen with him –there’s always great banter, and generally we tend to bounce off each other’s ideas.”

Crucially, the two of them agree on some key principles, which makes their relationship all the better. They agree, for example, that Cornwall is home to what can only be described as a bounty of growers and producers. As Ross puts it, “Cornwall is the place to source such ingredients!”

So, what does Ross bring to the menu?

“I generally have a lot of freedom with the menus. Jude ‘okays’ them and sometimes adds elements to a dish if needed. Since I started again as Head Chef, I’ve been able to introduce quite a lot to the menu. For example, I’ve replaced the amuse bouche with snacks, which I think are way more fun! I can get really creative with them, and they tie well with my love for sharing.”

With this in mind, Ross has introduced perhaps one of the biggest changes to the menu that Kota has seen for some time. “I’ve moved to a small plates menu for lunch,” he explains. “This gives the customer a chance to come and enjoy as little or as many of my

dishes as they like. They can sample the whole small plates menu, if they choose! Here at Kota, the small plates are all about sharing. I love to eat this style of food, and I’m sure our guests love it too.”

As Kota, like every other restaurant in the Duchy, prepares to get the season rolling, it’s looking set to be another busy one, not least here in Porthleven. With changes to the lunchtime menus and the combined flair of Ross and Jude bustling away in the kitchen, to anybody who shares their love for the virtues of great Cornish food and the pleasure of sharing, we would highly recommend booking a table.

The perfect PICNIC

CREAMY SUNDRIED TOMATO PASTA SALAD WITH ROASTED GARLIC AND RODDA’S CORNISH CLOTTED CREAM

What could be better than warm weather, good food and the great outdoors? Nothing says summertime more than bringing family and friends together for a spot of al-fresco dining with a picnic. Try this pasta salad recipe from Rodda’s Cornish clotted cream.

METHOD

1 Cook the pasta following the instructions, until al dente. Whilst the pasta is cooking, preheat the oven to 180°C.

2 Chop the top of the garlic bulb off to expose the cloves and place on a piece of tin foil. Pour 1 tablespoon of the sundried tomato oil over the garlic bulb and wrap in tin foil, forming a small parcel.

3 Roast the bulb in the oven for 20 minutes. While it’s roasting, drain the pasta and place in a large bowl. Cut the onion into very small pieces and add to the bowl of pasta along with the chopped sundried tomatoes, fresh herbs and Rodda’s Cornish clotted cream.

4 Pour 1 tablespoon of the sundried tomato oil into the mix and squeeze out the roasted garlic from bulb, mixing thoroughly to coat all of the pasta. The warmth of the pasta will melt the clotted cream and make a delicious sauce. Season, allow to cool, and for a peppery taste serve with a little rocket.

TRADITIONLegend meets

Immerse yourself in Tintagel and the legend of King Arthur, whilst enjoying one of Britain’s greatest foodie traditions: afternoon tea.

Acquired by the Mappin family and British artist, Ted Stourton, in 1999, then restored in the early-to-mid 2000s, Camelot Castle now offers guests the chance to stay and relax in accommodation of Downton Abbey scale, soaking up the period charm and enjoying the staggering coastal views that the castle’s clifftop location affords.

But it’s not just for those in search of accommodation for the night, in fact it’s the perfect place to stop by for a bite on a day spent exploring the myth-strewn landscape of Tintagel. The castle has no fewer than three venues in which to enjoy refreshments; there’s Irina’s Restaurant, where superb, freshly cooked food is prepared using local produce. With formal dining inside, there is also the chance in fine weather to eat and drink al fresco on the Camelot Castle Hotel terrace. For pre- or post-dinner drinks, be sure to retire to The Golden Age Bar, and if you are stopping in the daytime, why not enjoy afternoon tea in The Explorer’s Tea Room?

Here, you can enjoy one of, if not the most, luxurious afternoon tea in Cornwall, in one of the county’s most beautiful, dramatic and romantic locations. Available everyday between 12pm and 6pm, there are three afternoon tea options to choose from. The first – the Camelot Afternoon Tea – is just £19.99 per person. With it comes a selection of finger sandwiches,

Russian honey cake, brownies, macaroons, cupcakes, scones, Cornish strawberry preserve, Cornish clotted cream, and of course, tea. The second – the Prosecco Afternoon Tea, for just £25.99 per person – is great for when you’ve earned a long-lunch treat, offering all of the above but with the addition of a large glass of pink prosecco.

It’s the Royal Afternoon Tea, however, that’s really caught our eye. Also featuring the same tasty treats as the Camelot Afternoon Tea, the ‘royal’ touch comes via the addition of salmon caviar, and a glass of pink Champagne from Dom Perignon Grapes.

Whichever you choose, there are few better places to enjoy afternoon tea than the clifftops of Tintagel, and the tea menu from the renowned Tregothan Tea Estate will make it difficult to choose just one. Replete with history, and with the period charm of Camelot Castle inviting you to take a walk back in time, there are unsurprisingly some superb reviews on the Camelot Castle website. But don’t just take our word for it; book a table and experience it for yourself!

Remembering Penlee

On December 19th 1981, the crew of Mousehole’s Penlee lifeboat, Solomon Browne were lost attempting to rescue the crew and passengers onboard the stricken vessel, the Union Star. Battling heavy seas and force-12 hurricane winds, they managed to rescue half the crew, but rather than return to shore they made one final heroic rescue attempt, and all radio contact was lost. Sixteen souls were lost to the sea that night, eight from the Union Star and the eight gallant crew members of the Penlee lifeboat, Solomon Browne

11 LIZARD ART

Nucleus by Sarah Trewhella

Sarah is an expressive, contemporary artist based on the Lizard Peninsula, specialising in ink and mixed media. She produces work that is influenced by the ever-changing world that surrounds her, with the fluidity of water-based paints, taking on a movement of their own accord, which leads into something else – unexpected, in the same way that nature can reveal things that are unexpected.

Discover

If you’re visiting Cornwall this summer and you love to discover local artists, don’t miss a visit to one of Whistlefish’s coastal galleries. Located in Falmouth, Fowey, Dartmouth, Looe, Newquay, Padstow, Plymouth, Salcombe, St Ives and Truro, you’ll find a huge selection of cards and art, all lovingly designed and printed right here in Cornwall.

Whistlefish was founded by Lyn Thompson in 1996. An ambitious young artist with a passion for florals, animals and the coast, she lovingly grew the company to become one of Cornwall’s most well known card and art brands, now with 11 shops in south-west England.

DID YOU KNOW?

Visitors to Whistlefish can buy 10 everyday cards for £10. And for Cornwall Living readers, 10% discount can be enjoyed online when you use the code ‘CL10S23’! Excludes stamps, sale items, delivery, gift cards and art. Offer expires 31st October.

The Whistlefish team of Cornish in-studio designers, as well as independent artists, bring fresh, unique designs to homes across the country. They believe everything should be a piece of art, from a congrats card to a statement canvas.

With her whimsical harbourscapes and often-present dogs, Hannah Cole is one of the brand’s most popular, long-standing independent artists. You’ll find many new pieces this summer in soft palettes with pops of pink and turquoise that lend themselves perfectly to interiors with a costal feel.

You’ll also find lots of lovely floral greeting card designs, a celebration of Whistlefish’s love for wild flowers and gardens alike, along with coastal landscapes, cute characters for kids and more of the ever-popular archshaped cards. You can also pick up beautiful gift bags, wrapping paper and party ware from the wide selection online; everything you need for summer celebrations.

In case you were wondering about the brand’s green credentials, Green Matters is at the heart of everything Whistlefish does. The team produce their 100% recycled, sustainable greetings cards right here in Cornwall, using vegetable inks and packaged without plastic. When you buy online, you’ll be asked to donate to plant a tree, supporting the company’s aim to plant more trees than it uses, regenerating the materials they use in production.

So, whether you or someone in your life has a love for all things Cornwall, or you’re looking to up your gifting game, be sure to pay a visit to Whistlefish, either online or in-store!

THE WAVE Ride out

As the current British Masters Longboard Champion, Chris Thomson is no stranger to the feeling of catching a wave and riding the salt water in to shore, so it’s no wonder that he’s not only the founder of Longboarder Magazine, but also an online store dedicated to providing everything you need to get out there yourself.

Planted firmly in the heart of Newquay, one of Cornwall’s surf capitals, 10 Over Surf Shop is proud to be one of the sponsors of the British Longboard Union, with one hand always in the action, ready and waiting to advise you on surfing in Newquay, what equipment to use, where to eat out and anything else you might need to know!

Stocking surfboards, surf clothing, wetsuits, surf hardware, yoga equipment and skate boards, it’s unlikely that you won’t find what you’re looking for at 10 Over, and with next-day delivery or click and collect from Newquay available, you’re sure to get your order fast, so there’s no need wait to start your next surf or skate adventure.

The online surf shop is driven by four core values: earth, nurture, showcase and community, as Chris explains: “The environment is critical to us as a group of surfers, outdoor lovers and horticulturalists.

We strive daily to do our bit to protect the environment and to put planet Earth first in every business decision we make. We want our younger surfers to feel supported to achieve their surfing goals, and to nurture talent where it is evident, giving each emerging surfer an opportunity to find his or her voice and a freedom of expression.

“We are always on the lookout for new brands with environmental and social integrity that push boundaries, and yet are economically viable and serve to benefit all in the supply chain. 10 Over Surf Shop will endeavour to collaborate on community projects that benefit us all. Only by working together can we move forward, and communities work best when there is tolerance of difference.”

With up-and-coming young UK surfers like Lola Bleakley, Amelia Hewitson, Willow Smith and Harvey Waters under the sponsorship of 10 Over Surf Shop, there is nothing but good vibes here, so why not go online or get in touch with the team to find out more?

Like a perfect day of surf, 10 Over Surf Shop based out of Newquay is the combination of many unique elements.

INSPIRED by nature

We discover a unique Cornish jewellery workshop, with a world-wide audience.

Nestled near National Trust gardens on the outskirts of Penzance, you’ll find Justin Duance’s jewellery workshop. It may look unassuming from the outside but inside it is a hive of activity, twinkling gemstones and tapping hammers.

From these humble origins Justin’s jewellery is made and sent all over the world, with designs not just inspired by our natural surroundings, but incorporating it. Local hardwoods are inlaid into rings and gold is cast directly into beach sand to create unique and organic textures. “It’s very humbling,” explains Justin “people come from all over the place to choose their jewellery after seeing us online.”

Any visit is more than worth it. You’re welcomed into their office space (from which you can see into the workshop) where their extensive collection of rings, pendants, studs, and cufflinks are all laid out for you. With their relaxed and friendly approach, you’re encouraged to have fun – trying different pieces on to get a sense for what feels right and what you like. When you’re ready, all the different elements are pulled together into a design for the perfect piece which can be made especially for you.

There is plenty of scope for personalising your piece; from collecting your own sand or wood, to choosing the specifications of your design and the materials it’s made from – all sustainably sourced, of course. Everything is made to order, with the exception of the ‘Off the Bench Peg’ collection which is ready-made. Here Justin has given his team free reign to make whatever takes their fancy and these one-of-a-kind pieces are displayed at the workshop as well as being for sale on their website. This not only gives the jewellers creative freedom but also an opportunity to explore new techniques and ideas that can inform new designs. And of course, it means that you can have a unique piece of Justin Duance jewellery without the usual wait time.

If you’d like to visit Justin’s workshop, book in online or over the phone. You’re encouraged to bring ideas and heirloom materials, or simply come and choose from their many designs.

SUMMERsuperstars

Meeting the cheeky characters that reside at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary!

This summer, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary is celebrating its wonderful residents – from seals and sea lions to penguins and beavers, these animals are the beating heart of the charity’s vital conservation work. Here for a number of reasons, including life-long illnesses that need to be managed daily, each resident has their own story about how they ended up finding a place with the Cornish Seal Sanctuary.

Today, the animal care team works tirelessly to ensure these animals remain happy and healthy, and now they can also help tell the story of the work happening behind the scenes.

So, this summer, meet some of those special characters and discover more about the vital marine conservation work happening on our doorstep!

Ray came to the Sanctuary at around three-weeks-old in 2001, completely malnourished and thought to have suffered a head injury – which may be why he behaves very differently to other seals now. He’s also totally blind! Today, Ray is friendly and playful, and even has his own Facebook page.

Aayla was rescued in Norfolk in January 2017, malnourished and with an injury to her right flipper. The injury led to a small amputation to prevent infection and she still

receives care for this at her now-permanent home at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. Pumpkin was rescued from Guernsey in 2011, with a persistent urine infection that later revealed kidney stones. Now, it's believed Pumpkin is one of the only seals in captivity in the world to have them! Due to his condition, Pumpkin needs life-long medication and remains under the care of the Cornish Seal Sanctuary.

By visiting animals like Ray, Aayla and Pumpkin at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, you can help the charity provide a forever home for marine animals in need for years to come. The Sanctuary also runs a successful rescue, rehabilitation and release programme for wild grey seal pups through the winter months. Those who can't be released back to the wild are offered a home for life with the Sanctuary's fellow residents.

KEEPING CORNWALL wild

Cornwall Wildlife Trust is working to protect Cornwall's wild landscape for the future.

With its beautiful coastline and enchanting wild landscapes, it's no wonder that many fall in love with Cornwall, whether visiting or lucky enough to call Cornwall home. What many don't know is that nature in Cornwall is in serious trouble.

The State of Nature Cornwall Report drew concerning conclusions: “Over the last 30 years, nearly half of terrestrial mammals and three-fifths of butterflies are found in fewer places. Almost half of breeding birds have declined. Whilst a few species have prospered, an ecological emergency is unfolding.”

Each day, Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s team of dedicated volunteers and staff are working to ensure that nature thrives in Cornwall once again. Managing over 50 nature reserves, the charity works with organisations, farmers and landowners to protect wildlife sites and inspire local communities and young people.

For those who hold nature in their hearts, there are a variety of ways to help, one of which being the incredibly kind decision to remember Cornwall Wildlife Trust in your Will. Over the last five years, gifts left in Wills have accounted for more than a fifth of the charity’s income, with these legacies making it possible to purchase more land for nature, protect endangered species and tackle climate change.

“Having worked for Cornwall Wildlife Trust for over twenty years, it has been amazing to see the impact of gifts left to us in Wills,” says Head of Nature Reserves, Callum Deveney. “I have been privileged to work alongside families to ensure their loved one’s wishes are carried out. There’s a real sense that they have left behind something truly remarkable that will live on, and often a special connection develops with a particular place, which can be visited by families in the years to come.”

SECRET LAKE Summer fun,

Welcome to CST Experiences, an exciting community hub of not-for-profit watersports, holidays and lakeside café open to everyone!

Hidden away in the privacy of an abandoned quarry, a hive of accessible activity is bubbling away. But the secret is out! And more and more people are leaving shining five-star reviews for the fab, fun facilities at Trevassack Lake, all owned by Cornish charity, Children’s Sailing Trust, who’ve been teaching little ones life skills through sailing on the Helford River since 1997.

EXPERIENCE

Just ten minutes from Helston, laughter echoes around the quarry cliffs from both young and old, six to 106 year olds, at this inclusive, accessible watersports and events centre. Friends can take to the water for calm, supervised paddlesports or get splashing in group raft-building that abandons you on the island with only some ropes and barrels to get you back to shore!

Bring the whole family to Trevassack for the day, where anyone can take part in sailing, paddleboarding (including MegaSUPs!), kayaks, Katakanus, raft-building, wild swimming, events and venue hire for birthdays, group meet-ups and even accessible weddings, with well-being classes such as yoga and pilates.

There are two Changing Places plus specialist hoists and equipment to help those with SEND requirements and the whole site is ideal for wheelchair users, with free parking and dogs allowed on leads, too. The cherry on the lake? The waterside café, run by locally-renowned Cornish Food Hub. Enjoy artisan coffee and homemade cakes with a view or indulge in delectable deli brunches all morning before the gourmet lunch menu from midday. Open seven days a week to the general public, Chef Andrei plates each mouthful to perfection. Private dining options are available for evenings or special occasions – sit inside and dine or eat al fresco on the lakeside deck or a picnic-table on the beach. You’ve just found your new favourite eatery beside the not-so-secret lake.
