here is nothing I like more on a sunny late spring afternoon than wending my way through the path of one of Cornwall’s many gardens. Our mild climate is the perfect place for sub-tropical plants to flourish and the lush fronds of green vegetation give way to jewel-like plant species at every turn at this time of year. The first buds of the camellia raise their heads to the sun, set off by their deep, waxy green leaves. Rhododendrons rise majestically, covered with flowers in every colour from deep red, through bright purple. My favourite is the magnolia, with its tea-cup shaped flowers; the delicately shaped petals in white and pastel pinks find homes on branches that reach to the sky.

Newquay Garden Centre celebrates 75 years

From humble beginnings as a market garden in 1948, established by Wilfrid Curgenven, Newquay Garden Centre has grown and evolved into one of the south west’s largest family run garden centres, and this year marks its 75th birthday. Unsurprisingly, the team are delighted to be celebrating this magnificent achievement with their customers and colleagues throughout 2023.

Newquay Garden Centre has become a pillar of the local community, and the team do what they can to get stuck in. Having raised over £1,000 for Children’s Hospice South West in 2022, it’s fair to say that they’re happy to help. Not only do they raise money for local charities, the garden centre team also sponsor Newquay Football Club and the Newquay Bowls team, whilst also working closely with Newquay Zoo to improve their sustainability and reduction in palm oil campaign.

With their award-winning restaurant, The Potting Shed, and their latest creation, The Flower Studio florist, the garden centre team have continued to be proactive and provide their customers with everything they could need, a testament to their success! With social media competitions and community projects, alongside limited-edition merchandise giveaways, Newquay Garden Centre’s celebrations are set to continue throughout the year!

It’s bottled at a navy strength of 57% alcohol volume to really enhance its full deep and dark flavours, while giving a nod to our local nautical heritage. gardens; some to be found in deep wooded

Cornwall has something of a micro-climate. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the Duchy lays claim to being the warmest and sunniest county in the UK. The mild maritime climate and longer days keep the county warm, allowing subtropical plants to flourish. Nowhere is this more apparent than in its plethora of lush gardens; some to be found in deep wooded river valleys, others in more formal positions attached to historic estates, including one that lay hidden for over 70 years.

Let’s first take a look through the gates of some of Cornwall’s gardens that are steeped in history. 'Trewithen' (trewithengardens.co.uk), established as an estate in 1715, means 'house of trees'. With 30 acres of surrounding woodland gardens and more than 200 acres of parkland, it couldn’t be more aptly named. While the trees are certainly a highlight – the current owner having planted 30,000 of them to enlarge the shelter belts and surrounding woodlands in

compensation for the many casualties of the great storm in 1990 – Trewithen also boasts a huge collection of beautiful specimen plants including magnolia and rhododendron. It is also recognised by the International Camellia Society Garden, being only one of five gardens in the UK to boast this accolade.

Tregothnan (tregothnan.co.uk) is a magnificent, botanical garden. Estate teas and herbal infusions are grown on the estate and its flora has been renowned for hundreds of years. From the 1840s it became a global botanical hotspot and to this day it is still making headlines. It has the world’s largest Camellia Maze, and is home to one of the world’s rarest trees, the Wollemi Pine, which was found in an Australian ravine and brought to Tregothnan in 2011 for cultivation, where it now flourishes in this safe haven.

Located in the sheltered Porthluney valley, Caerhays Estate has a very traditional Cornish spring flowering garden. The gardens here stem from the work of two great Chinese plant collectors, E.H.Wilson (1876 to 1930) and George Forrest (1873 to 1932). Plants nestle together here for protection, which helps create their own microclimate, and its lack of formality makes this is a real plantsman’s garden.

Hidden in Cornwall’s wooded river valleys are gardens of a different nature. The trio of Meudon (meudon.co.uk), Glendurgan (nationaltrust. org.uk) and Trebah Gardens (trebahgarden. co.uk) can all be found on the banks of the Helford River. All three were created by the wealthy Fox family, who ran a very successful shipping business in Falmouth, as well as having interests in mines and fishing. These stunning examples of sub-tropical splendour were stocked with exotic plants by the family over the years and are now home to many a celebrated specimen – including magnolia and rhododendron and camellia – which have grown to proportions unique to this incredible Cornish microclimate.

As we close the gate on some of Cornwall’s most venerable gardens, we turn to a society which is helping to protect them for the future. The Cornwall Garden Society (CGS) has a history that is as rich as it is unique, as Jilly Easterby discovers.

The Cornwall Garden Society (cornwallgardensociety.org.uk) is a charity that encourages and improves the science, art and practice of horticulture; shares knowledge about gardening and Cornwall’s rich garden heritage, and promotes the conservation of the diverse array of gardens within it. From the historic to the contemporary, the coastal, the woodland and the sub-tropical, gardens across the Duchy, with their extraordinary spring colour and tender plants from across the globe, never fail to inspire, surprise and delight both the ardent horticulturist and green-fingered enthusiast alike.

CGS members enjoy self-drive visits to such glorious – and often, private – gardens in Cornwall and day trips to those beyond; an extensive in-person and online lecture programme by local luminaries and national experts; and the opportunity to participate in the staging of the Society’s showcase event – its annual Spring Flower Show – which has celebrated the cream of Cornish horticulture for more than a century. Indeed, the Society’s provenance stretches back to 18th May 1832, when the inaugural meeting of the Royal Horticultural Society of Cornwall was held, supported by the patronage of King William IV, who was “graciously pleased to place the sum of £10.10s.0d (ten guineas) annually at its disposal.”

Its primary function was to hold exhibitions of fruit, flowers and vegetables to bring the beauty of the Duchy’s large gardens and estates to public notice, given the limited opportunities for travel that existed at that time. This incarnation existed until 1856 when records faded but the same concept re-emerged with the publication of an advertisement in the Cornwall Gazette on 4th March 1897 announcing that a Daffodil and Spring Flower Show would be held in the Truro Concert Hall at the end of that month.

The owners of Cornwall’s great gardens and country estates organised those early events under the auspices of the Spring Flower Show Society until the 1950s, pausing only for two world wars, petrol rationing, or severe cold weather. The post-war period saw a

rapid increase in the popularity of all things horticultural, so the Spring Flower Show Society formally reconstituted itself as the Cornwall Garden Society in 1958 with a much broader remit: to share gardening knowledge with a wider audience through lectures, workshops and visits to special gardens.

65 years on and the Society is thriving. Its Spring Flower Show, which has been described by The Daily Telegraph as “the Chelsea of the South West”, remains a highlight of the horticultural year and attracts many thousands of visitors. This year’s event was no exception as head gardeners from Cornwall’s historic estates and glorious gardens – Trewithen, Tregothnan, Caerhays, Botallick and Porthpean among them – gardening enthusiasts and an increasing number of novices from across the county battled it out in the Competitive Classes, which are at the heart of the show, to win the 39 coveted trophies on offer.

warming,

“To mitigate the effects of climate change and global warming, we need to understand how best to preserve Cornwall’s gardens for future generations by ensuring that qualified horticulturists continue to tend them,” explains CGS President, Andrew Leslie.

To that end, the CGS provides financial support for horticultural students and working gardeners in Cornwall through The Pat and Margaret Wells Bursary, which it administers on behalf of Clare, Helen and Brendan Wells in memory of their late mothers who were born in the 1920s and never had the chance to study the subject. From travel costs for work experience to course fees and the purchase of equipment, this scheme has already assisted a number of up-and-coming gardeners with individual awards of up to £2,000. “Cornwall is the most wonderful place to grow plants that do not thrive elsewhere and the power of horticulture to drive economic vitality is under-estimated,” concludes Andrew Leslie. “We will continue to raise awareness of this, support the next generation of gardeners and catalyse conversations about the challenges of 21st century gardening.”

THE OLD BARN

A picturesque barn conversion with annexe, set in stunning gardens and grounds.

Located just outside of the picturesque and highly sought-after north Cornwall village of St Mabyn, the Old Barn enjoys a delightful and discreet setting positioned on the edge of the hamlet of Tregaddock. Accessed via a private driveway, the property is well screened from its nearest neighbour. As the name suggests this attractive, southerly facing barn was converted to a high standard during the 1990s and has been well maintained since. However, its fixtures are of that period and so it could now benefit from some updating.

Set within large gardens and grounds, offering immense potential for extending the

main accommodation, there is also a large grassed paddock with a well maintained 30’ timber stable block in situ. On the eastern side of the barn is a large lawned area.

The accommodation is arranged over two storeys – the layout is flexible as the main barn has two bedrooms and two bathrooms located on the first floor with a third bedroom and shower situated on the ground floor, with the third bedroom currently in use as an office. In the centre of the house is the main living room, with an open fireplace and French doors on the southerly side opening onto a patio and providing views across the gardens. This leads into the dining room, which in turn provides access to a utility room and kitchen. This is located within a single storey wing on the southerly side of the property and features a cream-coloured Aga that harmonises with the cream shaker style kitchen units. Beyond this is a sitting room that contains relaxing sofas, from where you can sit and enjoy the vista over delightful gardens.

THE OLD COACH HOUSE

A lovely property positioned within the centre of the village, close to amenities yet tucked away from the main thoroughfare.

This is a particularly attractive doublefronted building, with mellow stone elevations and arched red brick lintels, all under a natural slate roof. Due to its former use the property has high ceilings with exposed beams and a front elevation facing south west, meaning it enjoys a light and sunny aspect for the majority of the day. It has recently undergone a complete renovation by the current owners and is finished with the finest quality fixtures and fittings.

There is a sitting room and a kitchen/ dining room on the ground floor, with two bedrooms and a bathroom on the first floor. An attic room is accessible via a second

staircase in bedroom two although this has restricted head room and is mostly suitable for storage. The property benefits from double-glazed windows and new electric heating, while a new, pressurised stainless steel hot water system has also been installed. Offered for sale with no onward chain and vacant possession, it is currently utilised as a successful buy-to-let holiday residence, yet it could equally be suited to both full-time residential letting or full-time occupation.

In other words, The Old Coach House will appeal to a range of different buyers, making an internal, early viewing essential.

Tregony itself is a thriving community sometimes referred to as the "gateway to the Roseland". It offers a post office/shop, public house, church, doctors’ surgery and both primary and secondary schools, as well as a wide range of social activities.

The village offers easy access to the whole of the Roseland Peninsula, one of Cornwall's best kept secrets and one which is fast becoming a much sought-after residential area.

SANCTUARY A zero-carbon

Did you know that almost a quarter of CO2 created by us comes from buildings and the homes we live in? A statistic that may be difficult to swallow, but there is a way forward to the future we all want. Verto has spent over ten years fighting for zero on the home front, and as the team like to say, zero carbon means zero limits.

Founded in 2010 by Tom Carr and Richard Pearce, multi-award-winning Verto stands tall as the UK’s leading sustainable housebuilder, with great design, technology, wellbeing and sustainability at the heart of everything they do. This passion for forward-thinking innovation is certainly reflected in one of their latest developments, Tessello Rise.

Tucked away in a peaceful residential corner of Carbis Bay, lies a collection of 17 beautifully designed, Zero Carbon Smart Homes™, within easy reach of the beach and everything that the surrounding area has to offer. Picture waking up every morning in a home that works in complete harmony with its surroundings. From air-sourced heating and integrated rooftop solar panels, to larch and slate cladding, these carefully designed homes define the highest efficiency and sustainability standards.

As you enter your coastal home, the large hallway leads you to an open-plan custom kitchen and dining area – perfect for hosting a dinner party with friends, or enjoying a family breakfast before a day at the beach.

LIFESTYLE 30 | CORNWALL LIVING An art lover’s
dream, a surfer’s paradise, a family’s haven – a home at Tessello Rise is anything but ordinary.

A handy utility room sits off to the side. The spacious living room, just along the hall, has double doors that lead to your private garden. This home truly brings the outside in to create a zero-carbon sanctuary.

Head upstairs to the first floor to discover four excellent sized bedrooms, all with Juliet balconies, and a spacious family bathroom. The master bedroom boasts a sumptuous en suite with large, walk in rainhead shower. The contemporary exterior is striking, yet sits harmoniously within its environment. Private gardens are to the rear of all the properties. And with driveway parking and a well-proportioned garage at the side, there’s always a space for you and your lifestyle.

There is no detail that has not been attended to in the design of these astonishing properties. The four-bedroom Heron embodies modern family living, with plenty of room for everyone and everything in the light-filled, open-plan living space. Coming in three beautifully different external elevations, the homes are designed to maximise solar gain for the PV panels on the roof, and the four spacious double bedrooms are designed perfectly for recharging for the next adventure.

On top of the solar panels, an Air Source Heat Pump, triple glazed windows and super insulation, each home has a myriad of sensors in each room all connected to a smart home system which means the home can ‘learn’ how you live, ensuring you are only heating rooms when you need them to be warm. With automatic lighting and Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery incorporated aswell, these really are as cutting edge as they are sustainable. All of this is controlled via a handy app on your phone, meaning you can keep an eye on things from anywhere in the world.

“We’re immensely proud to be from the Southwest,” Tom reflects, “because it means we’re fortunate enough to build award-winning sustainable homes surrounded by some of the country’s most spectacular landscapes, beaches, towns and villages. As locals ourselves, we care deeply about building architecturally stunning homes that sit harmoniously within these beautiful surroundings.”

If you’re moving from a traditional house where each hot shower, warm radiator and brightly lit room comes at a cost to the planet, the difference is nothing short of life changing. Verto is changing the way we live, by changing the homes we live in, for a lighter, more joyful and sustainable lifestyle. With only a few homes remaining at Tessello Rise, why not reach out to Verto now, and start your journey to Living Zero today.

QUARTZ

If you’re new to the world of worktops, you might be wondering which material you should choose and why. Duke Stone of Cornwall has been designing and supplying stone to homes of distinction across Cornwall for over seven years. With the launch of the competitively priced Coastal Range – a new bespoke collection of quartz selected carefully by analysing recent trends and liaising with customers for current favourites – we asked the team to explain the benefits of a quartz worktop.

What exactly is quartz?

Quartz is a man-made product which combines natural stone with resin to produce a durable composite. As it is manmade, quartz is more uniform in colour and patterning than the natural alternative and is available in a huge variety of colours and patterns to complement any kitchen design. Be it a marble or speckled effect, a sparkling or quietly elegant colour, chunky or slim and sleek, the choices are endless.

Is a quartz worktop durable?

Kitchen worktops are the most-used surfaces in the home and so durability is key. A quartz worktop is incredibly hard-wearing as it’s made from one of the toughest materials available. You might be surprised to learn that it’s both tougher and stronger than granite, able to handle double the impact of granite with

four times the flexural strength. However, it is certainly worth noting that quartz is prone to damage through heat, so no hot pans!

Will my worktop scratch?

There are few things worse than purchasing a new kitchen worktop, only to discover scratches on it shortly after. Thankfully, quartz is naturally scratch-resistant, with only three other natural minerals in the world that can scratch it; diamond, sapphire or ruby, and topaz. As long as you remove any jewellery containing these gems before cooking or baking, your worktop will remain in pristine condition.

Is quartz environmentally friendly?

Quartz is a material that doesn’t emit chemical gases, resulting in better air quality throughout your home. In addition, with brands bringing out more sustainable ways to produce quartz, alongside the fact that quartz worktops are built to last, this is a worktop choice that’s kind to the planet.

Designer FOR A DAY

Not looking for a full design service but in need of some professional style guidance? Cotton Mills Design House has just launched a brand-new solution…

Cotton Mills Design House in Truro has long been known for its luxury, bespoke window treatments, but since being bought by interior design expert, Helen Grundy-Smith, the company now also provides a timeless and functional interior design service that spans both end-to-end projects – very popular with both developers and holiday home owners looking for a property makeover – as well as bespoke packages for private homes and single consultations. New for this year is a ‘Designer for a Day’ service, which bridges the gap between a full-service, turn-key design offering, and single-room makeovers. The service has been launched in order to offer professional guidance for those who have a vision but are struggling to realise it in terms of design, styling and shopping, and the whole process is delivered in five easy steps…

Discovery call

Why not book a complimentary discovery call to see if your project is a good-fit for this style of service? At this stage communication is key,

and being open and honest about your dream goals, whilst keeping budget and other limits in mind, is the road to success.

Decide your dates

The Cotton Mills’ team will then talk to you about available dates. As with all professional services there’s an agreement and invoice process to lock in the arrangement and get started on your dream space.

Pre-work

Next comes the ‘game plan’. “Before our session, clients will receive a questionnaire and provide photos of their space. Then we'll hop on a pre-meeting call to ‘game plan’ the session,” says Helen. “It’s an exciting voyage of discovery for both myself and the client.”

Designer for a day session

Helen, or one of her experienced design team members, will then dedicate a five-hour day to you. To get an idea of how this day might look, we speak to Helen: “There's lots that we could achieve in our time together: we might start with a one-hour prep call via Zoom so that we

HOME 40 | CORNWALL LIVING
 ABOVE Down to the finest detail

can be clear on the client’s priorities. We can also use this as a chance to take a virtual tour of their home.

Follow up

"A second one-hour follow-up call via Zoom can be arranged to get answers to the inevitable questions that arise," says Helen. "We can arrange to visit a property if it’s local to us or, if the client would like to visit us at our Truro studio, we offer complimentary lunch and drinks. The service is designed to be versatile and open to all, whether you live incounty or out. We finish the consultation with a bespoke Client Guidebook, which contains a summing-up report of our time which is packed with notes, links, recommendations and next steps.”

There are a range of services that Helen and her team are happy to discuss: “We usually start with floorplans and furniture layout,” says Helen. “We then move onto interior finish recommendations as this will set the tone for the design. Next comes the finer design elements where we can advise on furniture, soft furnishings, accessories and, of course, window treatments!”

Cotton Mills Design House offers optimal interior styling for both residential and commercial properties: “I worked on superyachts for a long time and due to the small environments, I had to learn how to

organise and make good use of the space available, both in terms of light and storage, and it’s these impactful elements in a room that are important. I believe the design needs not only to stand the test of time but to be functional as well. This is what we aspire to at Cotton Mills. Everything we do is geared towards curating dream homes for our clients that they will love to spend time in, and not just until the current trends wear thin.”

In terms of commercial projects, Helen can advise those looking to furnish a holiday or second home: “Guests are looking for that little bit of luxury. I think where you can afford to spend a little more, making really good decisions and curating special pieces that are going to last and are of really good quality will set your property apart. Competition can be so fierce in the holiday letting industry, especially in Cornwall. Cornwall speaks for itself in terms of marketing, it has worldwide renown. So, if you’ve got a letting property, you’ve really got to try and stand out amongst the crowd and going that extra mile with certain details and finishes makes a big difference. Guests can be very discerning and have come to expect quality.” So, whatever your interior design aspirations we highly recommend getting in touch with Cotton Mills to realise your dream home.

Painted uPVC doors and windows can really add the wow factor to your property, giving it incredible curb appeal. In recent years, home owners have become more discerning when it comes to the colour of their doors and windows, moving away from the traditional white or increasingly customary anthracite options.

Philip Whear Windows and Conservatories offers the perfect solution in the form of their in-house paint booth, which means they can create truly unique installations in a kaleidoscope of colours.

Before the paint is applied, all surfaces undergo two stages of preparation. Firstly, the surface is keyed to remove the glossy sheen, giving the paint even greater adherence.

The frame is then cleaned with a special preparation treatment, developed by paint manufacturers exclusively for this purpose, ensuring all surfaces are degreased and clean. Next comes the masking process if only parts of the items are to be sprayed. For example, you can have the colour of your choice sprayed on the outside, leaving it white inside. Once prepped by Philip Whear’s expert technicians, the product is then ready to be sprayed in their on-site spray booth at the factory showroom in Cornwall.

The specially developed high-quality paint chemically bonds itself to the uPVC, giving excellent resistance to scratching, fading

and weathering. Once the product has been sprayed, it is ‘oven-baked’ and left to cure, before receiving a final coat of protective lacquer. The whole process means that the paint is very hardwearing and, for piece of mind, is covered by a ten-year guarantee.

Philip Whear Windows and Conservatories has been designing and manufacturing quality timber and uPVC conservatories, doors, windows and glass balustrades across Cornwall for almost 40 years. Priding themselves on quality design and craftsmanship, the team have created unique, bespoke designs that have enhanced a plethora of homes across the Duchy.

With a 2,000sqft showroom, open six days a week, you can drop in to see the product first hand, and you are even welcome to have a look around the factory and wood workshop to see where your vision will become reality.

Our choice of Cornish coastal getaways

Drym House, Drym

In-between the coasts, within the peaceful hamlet of Drym, equidistant from Hayle and Helston, sits Drym House; a distinguished, traditional granite-built home sleeping eight. Originally built in the 1850s, it has been tastefully renovated to exceptional standards while keeping its traditional assets.

The love and attention paid to this home is evident from the moment you step in – on the ground floor there’s a large formal living room, a newly renovated open-plan kitchen/diner, as well as a naturally lit sunroom with bi-fold doors to a patio and outdoor dining space.

The mid-Victorian staircase at Drym House leads to four light and airy bedrooms (three of which are en-suite) and a large family bathroom with freestanding bath. Each room has been beautifully styled with comfort and rest in mind.

Set in just under an acre of land that has been kept in impeccable condition behind its private gates, it has extensive gardens and plenty of parking for multiple cars. One of the highlights of this property is undoubtedly the wood-fired hot tub, a blissful addition in all seasons. The dogsecure gardens are a fantastic space for family games, or to relax with a bottle of something delicious after a day exploring the Cornish coast.

Spring IS HERE!

We all know the importance of self-care and the positive impact it has, but how many of us are really that good at following this through? By self-care, we’re not necessarily talking about a full-on spa day or yoga retreat (although they do help!), but just resetting the clock and taking an hour out to clear your mind, chatting with friends over some lovely food or a refreshing drink.

At the Harbour Hotel Fowey, you are invited to take an opportunity this spring to sit back and relax. Why not find your way to the terrace for a morning coffee to start the day right, or perhaps a spot of lunch or a glass of something cold as you look on at the gentle activity on the water below.

You can just drop in for daytime refreshment, there’s no need to book. Stop in for lunch, served from 12pm to 12.30pm, or the all-day cream teas. Whatever you choose, you can be spontaneous and treat yourself! Sit inside or out and make the most of this time, and if you want to stay for dinner, booking online is easy to secure a table at this popular foodie spot.

With a casual, all-day dining atmosphere, food is light, seasonal and locally sourced; try the melt-in-the-mouth cod and crab, the crispy tempura prawns, or the simple but stunning steak. Meanwhile, the drinks menu offers an eclectic range of wines, not to mention signature cocktails, local craft beers and locally-made gins.

Harbour Hotel Fowey is dog friendly too, so do bring your four-legged friends along with you. With seating in the bar and on the terrace for you to use, and with water dishes in the hallway plus a jar of treats at reception, you can all be sure of a warm welcome!

ARCHIPELAGOEngland’s magical

The most southerly landfall in the UK, the Isles of Scilly lie just off Cornwall’s south-west coast, around 28 miles from Land’s End. And yet, the archipelago of islands, five of which are inhabited, feel like a world apart, with their own unique history, culture and even geography.

Flying into the islands, you could be forgiven for thinking you were somewhere in southern Europe. The islands crouch low and green in the Atlantic, grassy bluffs and brilliant white sand beaches giving onto startling turquoise water. Their southerly location and prevailing ocean currents mean the islands are among the warmest locations in Britain.

There are a host of activities to enjoy, from sailing adventures and snorkelling with seals, to exploring some of the outlying islands on kayaks and glass-bottom boat excursions, as well as wind and kite surfing and paddle boarding. On land, easy strolls are a great way to explore coastal paths, empty stretches of beach and verdant landscapes filled with endemic plant and flower species. Mountain biking and trekking are also great options for getting around, while there are regular boat services to shuttle you between the islands.

Clustered along a stunning stretch of coastline on St. Martin’s, the northernmost of the five islands, Karma St. Martin’s luxury boutique resort evokes a classic, English seaside village. The 30-room resort is set right on the edge of Par beach – a stunning stretch

of white sand giving onto pellucid waters that are perfect for a bracing dip.

The resort’s destination restaurant – Sir Cloudesley Shovell (named after a famous 17th century naval commander) – is an acclaimed eatery that has won the AA’s double-Rosette award for the last five years running. Fresh caught seafood and farm-to-table meats and produce are the order of the day, prepared in the modern French style. The restaurant offers ocean views all the way to nearby Tresco and the uninhabited islands that surround it. The excellent cuisine is matched by a wellstocked cellar, including Karma vintages, old and new world wines as well as access to our Enomatic Wine Machine for those interested in sampling.

There’s a pretty garden terrace and a private jetty where the ferry from St Mary’s docks when dropping off or picking up guests. It’s the perfect base from which to explore the magical islands – or simply to settle back and gaze off across the ocean with a glass of wine in hand. What’s more, you can do so with your favourite fourlegged friend in tow – Karma St. Martin’s is a dog-loving resort and your hound will be treated with as much care and attention as you are.

Reflect upon the ocean at a new exhibition at Colour & Space

Dive into a colourful collection of original art at Colour & Space with the new exhibition, Ocean Reflections. The new display showcases various viewpoints that explore the beauty of the sea and how we swim, surf and enjoy it.

Taking inspiration from her love of surfing, Phoebe Pocock presents a new collection of oil paintings and limited-edition prints that take a different viewpoint on the sea, as she plunges the viewer into the water to capture the joined forces of the surfer and the sea.

Perranporth artist Joe Mcdonald has just finished a beautiful collection of original oil paintings capturing those vibrant beach days. Joe’s intuitive approach to painting depicts warm summer colours with a subtle impressionistic feel, bringing to life those great summer holidays spent with friends and family.

The gallery is also delighted to welcome local artists Elisa Trueman, with her charming playful paintings that capture the Cornish coast, and Sarah Dearlove, with her colourful paintings celebrating the sea swimmers of Cornwall.

To complement the collection of paintings and prints there will be a selection of fused glass by Mother & Daughter Glass, hand thrown pottery by Paul Welling and a collection of handmade silver jewellery from local maker Magpies Cornish Treasures.

“As we are only tucked around the corner from the golden sands of Perranporth beach we are naturally inspired by the beauty of the sand and sea and feel this is the perfect way to kick off the spring season with a splash of coastal colour.”

The exhibition will run until the 27th of May.

MASTERYFloral

Preferring to work onto recycled or reclaimed surfaces and using recycled paints where possible, Florence Super’s work takes inspiration from colours, culture, contrasts, movement and wildlife experienced while travelling and diving around the world. With murals gracing the walls of business and private homes across the globe, Florence was recently commissioned to create a beautiful botanical celebration of the amazing plant life that can be found at The Duchy of Cornwall Nursery. The conversation began in early January 2021 when Florence was approached to discuss the possibility of creating a mural on one of their café walls.

After agreeing the design ethos, which was to reflect plants that could be purchased at the nursery, Florence mapped out the shapes on the wall to ensure that the composition was perfect. Using acrylic paint, Florence’s favourite medium, allowed her to create texture and depth without the paint taking too long to dry. Adding the detail, Florence applies the paint freely, using a large range of colours, all whilst moving with the paint as the work progresses. This detail is usually applied in as many as six layers, with each layer fluidly applied across the whole piece in one go. Working in this way provides Florence

the opportunity to sit back and see how the mural is taking shape, identifying any elements that might need further attention. The finished mural consists of a huge variety of plants, and reaches from the walls of the nursery café up to the sloped ceiling and round onto perpendicular walls, adding an extra bespoke element.

As well as botanical murals, Florence has also been commissioned by Highgrove to create a painting for an exclusive range of china. Originally designed and hand-painted by Florence onto recycled wooden panels and first showcased at The Garrison Chapel during the Chelsea Flower Show in 2022, the delphinium design has now been reproduced and transferred onto a range of fine bone china kitchenware in the home of British pottery in Stoke-on-Trent. The intricate light blue delphinium, HRH King Charles' favourite flower, wraps around the cup while a crescentshaped delphinium adorns the saucer.

Her wood engravings are produced using end-grain boxwood blocks finished and polished then cut into with small chisels and printed as you would a lino cut. Sally’s paintings and drawings focus on unravelling the intricacies in found objects and places.

With an incredible selection on offer, choose between fluffy pancakes, tropical vegan granola bowl, or smoked mackerel and fried eggs. Or pop in for brunch from 12pm to 4pm; brunch burritos, Reuben steak sandwiches and the Beach Farm bloody Mary's served all day.

As the light fades and evening sets in, enjoy the view from the YARD area with a stone-baked pizza from the shipping container kitchen.

Hand stretched and freshly made to order, take your pick from tempting toppings. Or perhaps the char-grill menu is more to your taste? If a little tipple is in order, the bar serves beers, ciders and cocktails, with a comprehensive wine list to boot.

One thing that the team at Beach Farm are particularly looking forward to participating in as an official activity partner, is the Roarsome Summit Family Adventure Weekend from 19th to 21st May – a three-day celebration of the great outdoors and a weekend of family adventures for all. From camping and glamping to surfing, treasure hunts and beach cleans, not to mention saunas, barbeques, walks and talks, here is a weekend promising fun and fond memories.

Hosting the official welcome drinks is none other than Beach Farm, along with football matches, speaking events and live music; it seems that this is the place to be this spring, with live music planned throughout the summer, so make sure to keep an eye on this incredible beach-side venue.

Spring is IN THE AIR

As this month’s issue focuses on Cornwall’s gardens, Jude Kereama takes the chance to explore a key topic in the world of food: farming.

season of growth, and a great time for foraging, in fact some of my favourite ingredients are already popping up in the woods and on the coast. The pungent scent of wild garlic and three-cornered leeks is evident as soon as you approach the woods. Wood sorrel is starting to grow once again, too, bringing a welcome, vibrant tang to spring salads, or as a garnish with a touch of acidity. And don’t forget about the mushrooms! Out on the coastline, meanwhile, we are seeing the annual return of seagrass, sea lettuce, and pepper dulse, as well as samphire, rock samphire, and

Words by Jude Kereama

To put it another way, it’s an exciting time of year to be a chef in Cornwall, and with this month’s issue of Cornwall Living focusing on gardens I thought I’d take the chance to explore a key topic in the world of Cornish food: farming.

Here in Cornwall we are lucky to have some amazing organic farms, who I’m proud to say are key when it comes to building the menus at both our restaurants here in Porthleven. We love to find out in advance what they have planted and what we can look forward to getting in the upcoming weeks, and right now, there’s lots to look forward to. In fact, we’re already anticipating seasonal staples like asparagus, broad beans, peas, snow peas, new season spring onions and other greens. Add to these the return of new potatoes, spring greens, purple sprouting broccoli, new season carrots and brassicas, and it’s easy to see why our kitchen teams love this time of year.

It really is a pleasure to draw on Cornwall’s home-grown produce. It’s a county that’s known for its natural larder, and as we continue to work with organic farms, growers and producers around the Duchy, it’s hard not to be inspired. Here at Kota and Kai, we would love to have our own home-grown produce, in fact I dream one day of having my own farm so that I can provide for both of my restaurants. Luckily, for now, I have some superb suppliers, meaning I can get my hands on the best local organic produce. But it can take time to find them, and it’s important that we source from the right suppliers. Ultimately, it’s their produce that can really make the difference to the dishes we serve up in our restaurants.

Fortunately, I would say that Cornish food is moving in a direction that’s really celebrating organic farming. It’s on the rise, and we applaud what these farms do – supporting them, I think, is the answer to the future of all farming. Working with biopesticides, like recycled animal waste, means that no unwanted chemicals are finding their way into our meals. It also means that the soil has more nutrients, which in turn leads to greater biodiversity of plants, animals and microbes. You need only look at the plight of the honeybee, whose dwindling populations are, in part, a result of the use of pesticides. The nutritional value of organic produce is also infinitely better than produce that comes from the mass-yield pesticide farms, where all the nutrients in the soil is exhausted, and surely we would all rather feed ourselves and our children with the best, most nutrient-rich produce?

Of course, while the techniques of organic farming aren’t new – they have, in fact, been employed for centuries – the reason for their ‘shelving’ in recent years is due to the need to cater to the mass market. There’s no

escaping the fact that organic farms yield less than their massproduction counterparts, and this, in turn, means that the produce is more expensive.

However, for restaurants like ours, the benefits far outweigh the costs, and I think our guests appreciate that. And it’s not only the vegetables – the same applies to organically farmed meat. Our venison supplier, for example, only feed their deer on organic vegetables, and they never use antibiotics on them. This ensures that the meat that arrives at our restaurant is completely unspoiled. More than that, we know that the welfare of the animals was always a priority, in fact it needs seeing to be believed just how happy they are! The farm also has its own abattoir and butchery on site, which means that not only is no stress placed on the animals due to transportation, there are also no fuel emissions resulting from their transportation from the farm. It’s really a win-win, and as more and more of us look to live and eat more sustainably and be more conscious about animal welfare, we’re really pleased to be able to ‘do our bit’ to help.

and they never use antibiotics on them.

At both Kota and Kai, we have always had a strong relationship with our local suppliers. It is so good to be able to communicate what we are after in the restaurants – to be able to have a conversation with them and discover what they have growing and what they have planted. It makes us super seasonal, and it means our menus reflect what’s actually growing here in Cornwall. As a diner, that’s an attractive proposition, and as a chef, I cannot think of a more exciting way to cook.

In high SPIRITS

Another exciting season begins for Cornish Rock Gin, with extra tipples on the horizon and a new home for their distillery.

What began life as an idea dreamed up on a dog walk across Rock beach, saw company founders George and Angie set up Cornish Rock Gin with a single classic gin. Fast forward some five years and Cornish Rock Gin is proud to start the 2023 season with eight wonderful gins, eleven very special rums and more to come later this year. As ever, all of their gins remain sugar free and contain the best and freshest natural ingredients they can source. The rums are very much designed for those with a sweeter tooth and make the most delicious instant cocktails.

In order to continue to keep producing such fabulous products, Cornish Rock Gin is moving to new, much larger premises in Wadebridge. Here, this will not only give them the space and capacity to produce and bottle more of their gins and rums, it will also allow them to have a trade counter plus a retail shop on site, so visitors can come and try their wide selection of tasty gins and rums. Not ones to stand still in terms of pushing the business forward, George and Angie will also be opening a Cornish Rock Gin shop on Fore Street, Tintagel. Discover the new store on the main street that runs the length of the town,

FOODIE 64 | CORNWALL LIVING

where you can sample the fabulous selection of gin and rum at a full tasting station, with very knowledgeable staff on hand who can help you find that special tipple. You’ll also find them at the Old Post Office, Tintagel, on a Tuesday and Saturday, so whichever side of the street you’re on, you cannot miss them!

However, George and Angie will not be forsaking Bude, where their retail adventure started. The Cornish Rock Gin range will be available every Friday at the Farmers Market and every Wednesday and Saturday at the artisan market opposite the tennis courts. Watch this space, as a shop will be opening in Bude later in the season so gin and rum lovers will be able to visit every day.

One of the latest rums to join the fold is Cornish Perfect Plum. This could be used in a myriad of cocktails and, as the name suggests, it is just perfect on its own. George and Angie suggest serving it simply in a warmed brandy bowl – sit back, sip and enjoy! Another new rum is the Cornish Cinnamon Rock; a spicy rum lover’s dream that's fantastic with either ginger ale or cola, the choice is yours. Now let’s take a look at some of rums that are just perfect for making cocktails. Cornish Tropics Mango and Passionfruit makes an instant porn star martini, simple add a fresh squeeze of passionfruit and top up with either Champagne or prosecco.

Use Cornish Coconut Paradise for a really tasty and refreshing cocktail. Pop some ice into a rum tumbler, add a shot of Coconut Paradise and top up with pineapple juice. This Caribbean-inspired mix of coconut with pineapple is to die for! Another perfect cocktail idea, if you’re in need of an instant margarita, is to salt the rim of a cocktail glass, put in a shot of Cornish Devine Lime with Salted Caramel and top up with Fever Tree Mexican Lime Soda. A sip of this will transport you to South-American heaven!

We hear from George and Angie, as they take a moment out from their busy schedule of new openings: “We have also just launched three commemorative gins to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and Queen Camilla, this May. All feature our bespoke illustrative label and come in a patriotic red, white and blue, perfect for a coronation celebration! We hope to see Cornwall Living readers at one of our venues or shows in the coming months. We can’t wait for them to taste our incredible range of gins and rums, and help them to pick the perfect product.”

Trewidden Garden

One of the Great Gardens of Cornwall, Trewidden is a tranquil oasis home to a collection of magnolias, camellias and tree ferns, as well as the National Plant Collection of Rhododendron Kurume Azalea Wilson 50. These, combined with the historic links to west Cornwall’s mining heritage, make for a fascinating day out.

It’s an ideal garden to explore, walking along unusual twisty paths between banks of extraordinary flowering trees and shrubs. End your trip with a welcome Cornish cream tea in the tearoom, and Trewidden becomes the ultimate day out for anyone looking to immerse themselves in Cornwall’s fabulous gardens.

Enys Gardens

This largely natural garden is a haven of tranquillity and is reputed to be the oldest in Cornwall. Situated between Truro and Falmouth it has an air of history and mystique about it. Well worth a visit for those seeking an inspiring day out and who are ready to explore the breathtaking bluebell display in the spring, the formal Flower Garden, the Meadow Walk full of ox-eye daisies in June, or the pond surrounded by Candelabra Primulas. And once your sojourn is over, round off your visit at the tea room with freshly baked scones and cake.

Events in spring include an art exhibition and craft fair with the mansion house open on specific event dates. Please see the website for details.

Pencarrow House & Gardens

Pencarrow, the much-loved home of the Molesworth St Aubyn family for nearly 500 years, is set in 50 acres of woodland and garden, where dogs and children are most welcome.

In the gardens there are superb conifers that tower over azaleas, magnolias and camellias, with many varieties of rhododendron adding to the blaze of colour in the spring and blue hydrangeas lining the mile-long carriage drive throughout the summer. Discover the ancient Celtic cross, Iron Age hill fort, Victorian lake and icehouse, grotto, restful Italian gardens with fountain and enormous rock garden.

Visit the Peacock café and enjoy the delights of a homemade cream tea or a light lunch and then browse in the Pencarrow shop for that perfect gift. The house is also open for guided tours every day except Saturdays.

Lamorran Gardens

Visitors who have travelled the coast of southern France or northern Italy will recognise Lamorran Gardens; perched on a south-facing hillside overlooking the sea, it has been laid out to maximise its ‘Mediterranean setting’. Yes, there are many rhododendrons, evergreen azaleas and camellias, but Lamorran is unlike any other Cornish garden, playing host to no less than 35 different types of palm trees with over 200 specimens within the garden. Likewise, the number of species of Dicksonia and Cyathea tree ferns run into the dozens. There are ponds with waterfalls, streams, bridges and temples to encapsulate the Mediterranean influence which pervades the garden. This is a private garden open to the public every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10am to 5pm. Contact the team at info@lamorrangarden.co.uk, or head straight on down to the gardens on Upper Castle Road, St Mawes, TR2 5BZ.

PLANT PERFECT

Now heading towards five decades of operation, Trevena Cross is an independent, family owned one-stop shop for all your gardening needs.

The garden centre is in the unique position of growing more than 90% of all their plant stocks on site in their large 35-acre nursery, ensuring plants remain at the forefront of its offering. This sophisticated, large-scale growing operation has evolved from a blank canvas when the nursery was first established back in 1976. Little more than a field of cabbage plants at first, current owner Graham and his late father built up the business, setting it on a pathway to become the unique destination it is today.

Graham remains at the helm of the business, with a team of staff that embodies Trevena Cross values, always putting its customers first. Offering exceptional products and friendly, helpful, knowledgeable service has built the business a loyal following, keeping it strong and resilient to the wide range of challenges that have presented themselves over the years, such as extreme and unpredictable weather, multiple recessions, and a pandemic. Trevena Cross doesn’t compromise when it comes to plants either. In addition to a diverse range of staple trees, shrubs, perennials, herbs, and seasonal plants, it also offers rare and unusual plants, sparking the attention of specialist plant enthusiasts, collectors and those wanting to bring something transformative to the garden landscape.

Several signature plants have helped give the nursery and garden centre its subtropical association, but nothing more so than the centre’s superb collection of large specimen palm trees, olives, citrus, bay trees and other showstoppers. New stocks of large specimen trees land on Trevena Cross soil only once or twice per year and each is one of a kind, making them very special indeed. Add to the visitor experience a shop full of houseplants and gifts, animal hunt fun for the children, and a comprehensive menu of delicious options at the on-site Garden Kitchen Café, and you begin to realise the centre has all bases covered. Plus, the good news is, whether you’re a visitor to the county or based more locally, a piece of Trevena Cross can be delivered to your doorstep with the centre’s local and national delivery service, so you won’t need to worry about fitting everything in the car!

FIXED UP FORfreedom

After a successful eight months, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary marks another busy pup season!

As Cornwall’s grey seal pup season comes to an end, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary has marked another busy winter for the animal care team. In fact, today the sanctuary at Gweek, near Helston, still has pups in its care, after more than 50 pups made it to the dedicated Seal Hospital between September and April.

DISCOVER MORE...

You can find out more about The SEA LIFE TRUST Cornish Seal Sanctuary mission and vital conservation work on their website, www. sealsanctuary.sealifetrust.org, or follow them on Facebook, Instagram or TikTok for more!

The SEA LIFE TRUST Cornish Seal Sanctuary is a charity that rescues and rehabilitates grey seal pups from around the Cornish coastline. Each season (September to March), the Sanctuary rehabilitates an estimated 50-70 seal pups that have been rescued for various reasons, from malnourishment to being separated from their mum. The sanctuary also provides a permanent home to animals that need special care from their team of marine animal experts, including seals, sea lions, penguins and beavers. When visiting the sanctuary, experience these wonderful marine animals up close and personal and learn all about their individual stories.

And it’s safe to say the 2022-23 pup season has been no easy feat for the team. A number of complicated cases have come through the doors, from eye removals to flipper amputations – as well as the usual issues that so often see pups land on their doorstep. Early in the season saw the admission of Wasabi,

who had a rear flipper amputated (and was released after a successful rehabilitation back in January), while Tulsi, who had an eye removed, continues to recover ahead of his release in the coming weeks.

As the sanctuary looks ahead to another fun-packed summer season, they’ll be sharing the stories of the residents who live on-site year-round, including that of the famous Ray, who has his own dedicated fan following!

There’s no better time to see their work in action, so dive into an ocean of fun at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary this spring – the team can’t wait to see you there.

THE SUN Fun in

As thoughts turn to the summer, and the diluvial qualities of the past few months sink into memories of the past, it’s probably time to consider what’s required to get the most out of this season. If, like us at Cornwall Living, you are looking to embrace a new water sport or improve upon skills honed last year, then you’ll probably be looking around to see what’s on offer kit-wise. One of the many suppliers that we’ve come across in our search are MAD Water Sports, based in Wadebridge. What we’ve found to our liking is that they’re a family run business offering expert knowledge in tandem with superb customer service. One exciting new development is a customer loyalty scheme, where points earnt whilst making a purchase can be exchanged for vouchers against your next one – a convenient way of allowing you to make the most from your budget.

They have also just launched a brand-new website, whose clean, intuitive design is very user friendly. Whilst you're there, you can signup to receive the team's newsletter and blog, with all the inspiration you need to get out and make the most of coastal Cornwall. Here you’ll find everything you’ll ever need to have fun on the water. In terms of kit, you'll find it all, from

inflatable

paddleboards, to buoyancy aids for all the family (including the dog), inflatable kayaks, electric pumps, wetsuits, surfboards for beginners up to seasoned pros, body boards, skim boards and loads of accessories that you didn’t even know existed! As we are, you’ll be pleased to know that they strive to ensure their products are sourced and supplied from companies who are keen to reduce plastic in their packaging and develop products manufactured to ensure a good lifespan and product longevity. If you want a hands-on experience than we suggest you visit the Wadebridge store. Alternatively, you’ll also find them at this year’s Royal Cornwall Show (running from 8th to 10th June). Here you’ll be able chat with the team and catch up on the latest technological changes and improved methods of production, the benefits of which will extend your fun upon the water.

REMEDYA remarkable

Over a 15-year Test Cricket Career (102 Tests and 116 One Day Internationals) and nearly four decades of global charity walks (raising over £30 million), Lord Ian Botham OBE has pushed his body to the limits, leading to decades of treatment and surgery. Last summer, six months prior to his recent knee surgery and at his least mobile, Sir Ian was introduced by his son Liam to a CBD sports gel that helped him return to his active lifestyle within a matter of weeks. With plans this year to play golf tournaments and with a busy fundraising schedule that will have Ian physically pushing himself, using the therapeutic gel is now part of his daily routine.

“I sent the gel over to dad and three weeks later he was walking round Sunningdale!”

Liam explains. Within two months he’d made a return to the Dunhill Links, playing three rounds of competitive golf despite not being able to make it round a course for at least two years prior to using the gel. Lord Botham recounts: “To get me through the Dunhill, I used the gel two to three times per day. To be quite frank, without it, I wouldn’t have made it round. This gel gives me the opportunity to get active again, quicker.”

The two legally available cannabinoids that form the backbone of EthicaCBD’s products (CBD and CBG) are recognised providers of

pain relief, having powerful anti-inflammatory properties. By combining these with a variety of dynamic plant extracts that have been carefully selected, EthicaCBD have come up with what appears to be a winning formula.

Chatting with Sean Jack at HPT Sports in Bude, who is seeing the benefits of the Sports Gel as both a stockist and a consumer, he shared that he thought "this magical stuff should be called a mobility gel, rather than a sports gel", because it’s helping a wide variety of customers with their aches and pains – not just sporty types. Sean personally uses the gel in the mornings to help with the crooked neck he wakes up with, and his best customer is in fact his mum, who’s seeing notable daily benefits using the gel on her joints.

As Ian says: “Sometimes you can do all the talking in the world, but when it actually comes to it, it’s got to work, and it works.” How’s that for a recommendation?

Duchy Hospital’s Consultant Urologist, Mr Nic Munro, clues us in with some helpful information about prostate cancer.

While ‘the c word’ is something we are all mindful of, and something we can only hope to avoid, the information available to us now is remarkable, and Consultant Urologist Mr Nic Muno at the Duchy Hospital has a wealth of it to set our minds at ease should we have any questions.

READ

For Mr Munro’s profile, and to read his full article on the subject, head online to www.duchyhospital. co.uk/specialists/urology/ mr-nic-munro. More general information and the statistics in this article are available at www.prostatecanceruk.org www.cancerresearchuk.org

Prostate cancer accounts for over 12,000 deaths annually in the UK. It is the most common male cancer diagnosis and accounts for over a quarter of all male cancer deaths. Treatment can be lifesaving, albeit with lifechanging side effects, and yet seven in eight men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer do not have their lives shortened by the disease, and many men never need treatment.

Am I at risk?

Prostate cancer is usually a disease of older men and is almost never seen in the under 50s. It runs in families; a father with prostate cancer almost doubles your risk of prostate cancer. However, race and ethnicity are also an important factor; black men in the UK have double the risk of diagnosis and death compared with white men, whilst men of Asian ethnicity have half the risk again.

How do I know if I have prostate cancer?

This is not straightforward. Surprisingly, urinary symptoms are not seen commonly in men with prostate cancer. Most symptoms

arise from a benign enlargement of the prostate gland, while advanced cancer may present with bone pain and weight loss, but this is rare.

Should I have a screening PSA blood test?

The level of the blood test PSA is usually higher in men with prostate cancer, so it would seem sensible to request a test to identify and treat any problem early, but it’s not quite that straightforward. On average, prostate cancer takes more than 10 years to cause harm. Studies have shown curative treatment shows benefit only in those with 10-15 years life expectancy, so PSA testing in the very elderly is unlikely to be helpful. In England, men aged 50-70 are entitled to ask individually for a PSA test after appropriate counselling, but testing is not routine.

“There are rapid changes afoot in diagnosing and treating men with this condition,” Mr Munro explains, “and I am confident that we can continue to offer contemporary first-rate diagnosis and treatment for men at risk of this disease in Cornwall.” To book an initial consultation with Mr Munro, make sure to call the dedicated Private Patient Team on 01872 438121 at Duchy Hospital.

NOW OPEN! Bidding is

Dive Project Cornwall is giving Cornwall Living readers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bid on a luxury superyacht charter in Palma de Mallorca worth £15,000.

Picture it – weighing anchor in the sheltered, opalescent waters of Palma de Mallorca, basking in the Mediterranean sun and sipping on a glass of your chosen tipple with up to 10 of your nearest and dearest. For the winner of this incredible auction, this dream could well become reality, and with bidding starting at just £5,000, it’s really a chance not to be missed for anybody in search of the ultimate group getaway.

Perfect for birthday surprises, anniversary celebrations, team building, or a group trip to remember, if your bid is successful, you and yours will enjoy a magnificent trip in luxurious paradise. The two-night, threeday trip is provided by White Star Charters, aboard one of two luxury vessels – the Lady Tatiana of London, or the Lady Alhena of London. Each can accommodate up to 11 guests across five permanent cabins, with an experienced crew of four catering to your every need.

Proceeds from the auction will go towards supporting Dive Project Cornwall CIC. For those who haven’t yet heard of it, this Cornish not-for-profit provides underprivileged school children from inner cities around the UK with the chance to learn to scuba dive in Cornwall. In doing so, it is raising awareness around the country and further afield about the importance of our

oceans, creating the next generation of Ocean Influencers to enact the positive change that our marine environment so badly needs.

It's an incredible cause, and the work it’s doing in partnership with key organisations like PADI and Marine Conservation Society comes at a time when our oceans have never needed it more. We are all, by now, aware of the pollution issues facing the marine environment, and there has never been a more crucial moment to take action. Dive Project Cornwall is leading the charge, but it needs our support. Whether it’s bidding for your chance to win a luxury superyacht charter in Palma de Mallorca, or by pledging a sponsorship to help fund the 300 under-privileged children who will be travelling to Cornish shores this year to learn to scuba dive, all contributions are welcome.

Bidding closes on Monday 15th May. To place your bid, visit the Cornwall Living website below, or head to the Dive Project website to find out more about the other ways you can help.

CHY AN BOWJY, TREGONGON

This is a rare opportunity to purchase a property that will appeal to those looking for a residential smallholding or equestrian enterprise in a special location but also those with a need to establish a business and maximise the existing commercial potential and thereby provide lucrative income.

The dwelling at Chy an Bowjy comprises of a 3-bedroom single-storey building with very generous living accommodation and whilst attached to another dwelling it is very private and the result of a sympathetic barn range conversion originally undertaken nearly 40 years ago. An inner courtyard includes a separate 1-bedroom annex which is ideal for a dependent relative, teenager or possibly letting. Externally there is mature planting to the garden and grounds and trees provide shelter and privacy. Beyond the gardens the land is comprised in four railed or fenced paddocks, there are purpose-built stables/donkey sheds and a loose cattle house with concreted yard. A dominant feature of the property is the large modern outbuilding of approximately 5,500 sq ft and a quarter of which is occupied by a local veterinary practice and providing useful income. Previously other parts of the building have been let as workshops and there is huge potential in this respect. The total extent of the property is about 6.29 acres.

Tregongon is a small hamlet with a mere handful of individual properties. It is located just off the A3078 Truro to St Mawes road, central to all the scenic attractions of the Roseland Peninsula and the Cathedral city of Truro and St. Austell both about twelve miles away and within twenty minutes driving distance. The nearest villages of Tregony and Veryan are both within three miles, offering excellent every day facilities including public houses, shops and post office, churches, primary school as well as a secondary school at Tregony. Sandy beaches are very close at Pendower and Carne (2-3miles) and the harbour village of St.Mawes is within a short drive. The tiny village of Ruanlanihorne is within a mile and a half and here there is an ancient church and a popular pub. The whole of the Roseland Peninsula is recognised as being of outstanding natural beauty and there are fabulous cliff top walks along the coast. The King Harry ferry provides an alternative link to Truro, whilst St. Mawes has a pedestrian ferry to Falmouth.
