lthough Cornwall is famed for its white sand beaches, turquoise waters and rugged clifftops, our county has a verdant side that shouldn't be overlooked. Due to its mild climate, where temperatures can rival those of the Mediterranean, Cornwall's majestic gardens are oft-described as sub-tropical, where flora and fauna normally associated with warmer climes flourish and flower. These lush green spaces provide a haven for happy wandering as Rosie Cattrell discovers in this month's cover feature from page 19. You'll find a couple of our favourite green spaces, Trengwainton and Morrab Gardens in the heart of Penwith. If you're visiting this area of the Duchy, then our Explore Penwith supplement (from page 57) is your companion to making the most of Cornwall's wild west, where history, culture and landscape collide. From the ancient to the new, this month we've been out and about exploring Nansledan, a 540-acre extension to the coastal town of Newquay. Inspired by HRH The Prince of Wales' vision to plan connected urban centres where mixed-income housing, shops, offices and leisure facilities combine so that daily needs can be met within walkable neighbourhoods, Nansledan is set to evolve into a community of over 4,000 homes supported by its own shops, school and public spaces. From page 69 we take a look at this exciting project and some of the businesses who have already made it their home. This issue, we are also delighted to unveil our new look. Updating our fonts and format we have made our pages easier to read, giving all of our content more room to breathe – we hope you love it as much as we do. …happy reading!

Partnership announced by Cornish charity

Foodie experiences like no other It’s been announced that the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) will be working in partnership with one of Cornwall’s major healthcare charities to promote and support lifelong learning. Both have signed a partnership learning agreement that will see them working together to provide ongoing training and development for RCN members and other staff and volunteers working through Cornwall Hospice Care. The national agreement, which is the second of its kind for the RCN Southwest region, also outlines the crucial role RCN learning representatives play in promoting learning and development. It will support the creation of new learning representative roles at Cornwall Hospice Care, with one recruited already and at least four more available. Regional Director of RCN in the south west, Lucina Muchina, says: “Sometimes it’s been hard for our members in the health and social care sector to take full advantage of the services the RCN offers because

we didn’t have enough representatives in place. This agreement gives us the opportunity to really support our members and to make sure we have a strong base of representatives.” Chris Starnes is the new RCN Learning Representative at Cornwall Hospice Care: “I’m passionate about learning and already involved in supporting my colleagues with training. This is a great opportunity to build on that, and to give better support by incorporating what the RCN has to offer.” Jo Smith, Education and Training Lead at the Cornish charity, adds: “We’re entering into this learning agreement with passion and enthusiasm, and are looking forward to exploring different ways of supporting people on their learning and development journey.” For more information call 01726 839156 or visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk

Epicurean adventures for pleasure seekers, Treguddick is all about experiences that bring taste, quality and innovation to the table with great food and drink. The team are serious about making the very best super-smooth spirits and liqueurs, coupled with menus that are designed with a passion for the south west’s finest ingredients. It’s about offering something different – dining with innovative dishes that are infused with their own awardwinning spirits. Opened in October last year, Treguddick is located just outside Launceston. What was until 2019 a muddy old barn, has since been transformed into a beautiful and versatile venue, perfect for days out and memorable experiences encompassing distillery tours and tastings. Add to these a bar and restaurant where you can indulge in a unique drinking and dining experience followed by a walk around the lake. A shining example

Keep exploring together with

Royal Cornwall Museum is excited to announce a British Museum Spotlight Loan, Gathering Light: A Bronze Golden Sun, from 6th August to 5th November.

Slickers Slings

Gathering Light stars the extraordinary Shropshire sun pendant, which is over 3,000 years ago – dating between 100 and 800BC, during the late Bronze Age period. The pendant could be one of the most significant pieces of Bronze Age metalwork ever discovered in Britain. The exhibition also features the Towednack Hoard, which was discovered in Cornwall 90 years ago and hasn’t been back since. The hoard features two torc necklaces, four arm rings, and two pieces of unfinished gold material. Whilst you’re there, don’t miss the plethora of treasurethemed summer holiday activities for families, details of which can be found on the museum’s website!

For adventurers and explorers seeking new horizons, the seemingly endless stretches of beach, coast path and countryside that make up the Cornish landscape are something of a paradise. Even more so for those travelling with intrepid hounds! However, not all furry friends are up to the task of coping with Cornwall’s long, winding trails. It could be that little legs just can’t carry them that far, or that, as they age, they can no longer keep up for the miles-long wanders that you once enjoyed together. Whatever the reason, a Slickers Sling could be the solution you’ve been looking for, allowing you to continue exploring together but without putting undue stress on your favourite fourlegged companion.

For more information call 01872 272205 or visit www.royalcornwallmuseum.org.uk

Available in medium and large sizes – medium accommodating dogs up to 6kg, large up to 13kg – Slickers Slings are strong and, importantly, comfortable. A brilliant

solution for nervous, elderly and blind dogs, as well as smaller hounds who can’t keep up on long walks, especially here in Cornwall, they are also much more convenient and practical than a pushchair or stroller. Made from durable materials and manufactured here in the UK, Slickers Slings are typical of the quality products that Slickers Doghouse is known for. As nature lovers, the team are on a mission to provide eco-friendly, sustainable products for our planet and oceans, as well as for our dogs, and they carefully choose the products to ensure that you’ll only ever find the very ‘best in show’ on the shelves. For a family day out or camping holiday to remember, head to Cornwall’s beautiful lakes this summer.

Located in the charming Cornish town of Looe, Tremaine Manor and its 12 traditional cottages, barns and shepherds hut, together with its gardens, is an enchanting, secluded, private hamlet dating back over 400 years.

Whether your passion is watersports, angling, walking, cycling, or simply enjoying nature with loved ones, you’ll find the perfect setting at Siblyback Lake on Bodmin Moor, Tamar Lakes near Bude or Stithians Lake near Redruth.

Tremaine, with its own village green, stream and duck pond is also home to some miniature horses, pygmy goats, chickens and guinea pigs and is truly a private world. The manor itself is available as a whole in all its imposing glory, or as two self-sufficient units, while the bespoke contemporary-chic shepherds hut is a particularly exciting addition for 2022. Each of the cottages, the shepherds hut and manor house can accommodate you and your favourite four-legged friends, so no one need be left behind on your next Cornish adventure!

Secret Suppers!

Tequila! Redacted memories and painful mornings after? Happy experiences of sipping cocktails in beachy paradise? Confused, not aware of what to expect? It’s certainly a word and world worth exploring. Made from the Blue Agave plant from geographically protected areas in Mexico, there’s been a huge shift from the shotslamming party days, to how consumers are drinking tequila nowadays. It’s gone away from Mixto tequila to 100% Agave tequila of premium, sipping quality, and is now revered as a serious spirit. Wadebridge Wines have gone to great lengths to get their hands on a diverse and interesting range of tequilas for

Husband-and-wife team Sam and Tim Moore of Wild Tipi have made connection and community their primary focus over recent years. Navigating life and business throughout the pandemic has meant that priorities have had to be modified and updated and, although the world was in turmoil, this time enabled the couple to reflect upon where they are heading and how to strengthen their existing offering. The result is their soon-to-be-launched ‘Simple Supper Nights’, evenings that are exclusively available to those signed up to the Wild Tipi mailing list. These nights will be about simplicity, connection, gathering and a little bit of magic – something we have all been yearning for. To take part in this unique experience follow the link below. you to enjoy. With something for all tastes and budgets, you’re sure to find a tequila to tempt you, whether that be Casa Noble (one of the first Certified Organic Premium Tequilas), a smoky Ojo de Tigre Mezcal, a summery El Sueno Watermelon tequila, or an afterdinner Vivir Coffee Tequila. Be it for slamming, sipping, stirring or shaking, Wadebridge Wines stock the lot. For more information visit www.wadebridgewines.co.uk

A summer of learning something new With summer flying by as usual, ceramicist Sally Tully is busier than ever, and if picking up a brand-new skill in pottery (or working on one you may already have) is on the agenda this year, now is the time to throw yourself in. With a limited amount of spaces left on her summer courses, time is of the essence when it comes to booking your space with Sally. Over the course of the summer holidays, you’ll find Sally at Roskilly’s, sharing the knowledge of her treasured craft of Raku firing, an experience you certainly won’t want to miss. What’s more, for the first time ever and with great excitement, Sally will be taking part in the Craft & Design Fair at RHS Garden Hyde Hall over the bank holiday weekend from 26th to 29th August. Including live demonstrations and interactive glazing sessions where you can Raku fire your

own pot in 45 minutes (so you can take it home with you), you don’t want to miss an opportunity to get hands on and learn something entirely new. For more information e-mail sallytullyceramics2021@outlook.com or visit www.sallytullyceramics.co.uk

The end of a summer of exhibitions As a summer of Cornwall’s most popular exhibitions at the Jackson Foundation draws to a close, now may be your last chance to catch them! Kurt Jackson’s Mermaids’ Tears contrasts the beauty and majesty of the sea with the scourge that is marine pollution, with particular focus on nurdles (also known as Mermaids’ Tears), the raw materials from plastic production that litter the tideline. His other show, Clay Country, looks at Cornwall’s China Clay pits that supply industry around the world with vital ingredients for purposes as varied as

porcelain, paper, toothpastes and lightbulbs. Fragile Earth sees textile artist Sally Baldwin evoke natural forms such as trees, pods, flowers, insects, sea life and water. The materials used – recycled and handmade paper, silk waste and gauzy cotton scrim – are ghostly, white and ephemeral, suggesting delicate, fragile, vulnerable and finely balanced landscapes. All three shows run until August 13th at the multi award-winning Jackson Foundation gallery in St Just, west Cornwall. Admission to this worldclass art space is free.

e all know the story of The Secret Garden; a hidden gem long forgotten, discovered by chance, fallen in love with and brought back to life to be kept a secret no more. What you may not know is that there are ‘secret gardens’ all over Cornwall, lying in wait for their next visitors to push open a door hidden by ivy and fern and step into a world of vibrant colour and eager growth, each bursting into bloom for the summer. Lost to the brambles of time for almost 80 years, the gardens of Heligan’s 200-acre estate had long been forgotten after the gardeners who carefully tended the ever-expanding collection of exotic flora were sent to the trenches of World War I. Out of 14, sadly only four would return. While this would be a story to dismantle many of the large estates throughout Britain, Heligan was different in the way that the gardens were never sold or developed, but left to slumber under a veil of ivy and thorns for decades, waiting to be discovered. Today, visitors can stumble upon the Lost Valley with its enchanting ponds and exquisite wildflowers, carpeted with bluebells in the spring. A peaceful home to both wildlife, ancient trees and the traditional practises of coppicing and charcoal burning.

Since 1659, Heligan was the ancestral home of the Tremayne family, who lived in the manor house. Incredibly, it is still owned by the same family, having been passed down to one of the descendants, John Willis. On 16th February 1990, he accompanied Tim Smit in a discovery that would change their lives forever, uncovering The Lost Gardens of Heligan. Stumbling upon the remnants of what was to be known as the ‘Thunderbox Room’, they came across a motto etched in pencil on the wall – 'Do not come here to sleep or to slumber’ – alongside the signatures of the lost gardeners, signed August 1914. “It had brought the garden alive for us, real people had led real lives here, and we now knew some of their names. It felt at once like a shared intimacy and an invasion of privacy. We could not ignore it even if we wanted to,” Tim explains in his book The Lost Gardens of Heligan.. “We were fired by a magnificent obsession to bring these once glorious gardens back to life in every sense and to tell, for the first time, not tales of lords and ladies but of those ‘ordinary’ people who had made these gardens great, before departing for the Great War.” Today, Heligan represents 200 acres of paradise for the explorer, wildlife enthusiast, plant lover and garden romantic, and with Victorian gardens,

pleasure grounds and even a jungle to entice you, you can expect a unique experience all year round. “The history of the gardens of Cornwall, great and small, is unique and remarkable,” explains Sir Robert Owen, Chairman of the Cornwall Garden Society. “It is the story of passionate horticulturists, the owners of gardens and their gardeners, who took full advantage of our wonderful climate and landscape, and, so importantly, introduced many wonderful plants from all over the world. The story of the intrepid plant hunters associated with Cornish gardens – sent out to roam the world in search of rare plants, and successfully propagated them in Cornwall – is fascinating, and made a very significant contribution to horticulture in the UK. We, the Cornwall Garden Society, can claim some insight into the historical importance of the Great Gardens of Cornwall, having ourselves been in existence for over 120 years, and enjoying a close relationship with many of the gardens.” Another historic Cornish estate with gardens and grounds worthy of our admiration can be found at Cotehele. Having been the ancestral home of the Edgecumbe family from 1353 to 1947, the gardens here have been carefully developed since the 16th century into the thriving utopia they provide today, with the Woodland Valley garden being a charming late Victorian addition. Spanning 14 acres of gardens and 12 acres of orchards, Cotehele's garden is unique and varied all year round, but a visit in summer is particularly enchanting. The borders in the upper gardens become a myriad of herbaceous plants and colourful flowers, while the terraces burst with hydrangeas, roses, geraniums and irises. The 19th century saw a boom for local

industries, and Cotehele Quay would bustle with busy vessels loading and unloading cargo. Paddle steamers made their way upriver to see the Tamar Valley’s famous blossoming orchards of Cotehele, which are still there to be enjoyed today. Preserved by the Edgecumbe family as a historic talking-point, rather than a comfortable family home, Cotehele is now in the hands of the National Trust. Built in medieval times, the current house is mostly Tudor and is full of stories about the family who owned it for 600 years, with an expansive garden cultivated over hundreds of years. Cotehele invites explorations of the formally planted terraces, adventures in the Valley Garden amongst the medieval stewpond and dovecote leading down to the River Tamar, or tranquil wanderings in the Upper Garden around a pond of red and white water lilies. Over in Penzance, the incredible and extensive collection of sub-tropical plants that you’ll stumble upon if you find yourself walking the winding paths of Morrab Gardens have been accumulated over many years. The original planting in the 1880s was a result of gifts from local estates like Trengwainton, Trewidden and Tresco after Penzance had become a popular seaside resort and demand for a recreational park became apparent. Upon holding a competition to design the

park, London designer, Reginald Upcher, won the prize of 20 guineas with his plan for the three-acre site. The original design, which included a bandstand and sub-tropical garden divided by a series of curvilinear walks, is still much in evidence today. When the park opened in 1889, the Gardeners’ Chronicle wrote: “One of its features is a Palm-grove, where tourists may fancy themselves in the tropics or on Mediterranean shores.” A significant role for the gardens was the study of acclimatisation of rare sub-tropical plants, a tradition which continues to this day. “But the importance of the major Cornish gardens is not simply historical,” Sir Robert Owen continues. “They continue to play a role that is both important to Cornwall and to horticulture more widely. Not only are they such a wonderful resource for those of us privileged to live in the county, but they rightly continue to attract visitors in vast numbers, thereby making an important contribution to our local economy. Secondly, they are a living phenomenon. Whilst many are of considerable age, others have been created or restored within recent times, most notably the Eden Project. Thirdly, the gardens provide a bank of experience of horticulture, which will be invaluable as we begin to address the effects of global warming. “They also provide an important training ground for those, young or old, seeking to pursue a career in horticulture, a resource supported by both practical and academic courses, and facilities for research run by academic institutions, such as Duchy College, Rosewarne and Eden Project Learning. I have no doubt that as we adapt to climate change, now accepted as happening by even the most diehard of sceptics, the role of Cornish gardens and their gardeners will be as great and as important for the future as it has been in the past.”

he south coast of Cornwall provides a gentle pace of life that, in recent times, has become increasingly popular, and if any town encapsulates what makes it so special, it has to be Falmouth. A harbour town with centuries of maritime heritage, Falmouth is rooted in the coastal lifestyle. It’s also home to a flourishing culinary scene, providing epicurean treats for all across a heady mix of trendy bars, cafés, delicatessens and restaurants overlooking the marina, which is why foodies love Falmouth. For those who take joy from the creative expression of others, Falmouth is home to its own university and provides fertile ground for creatives of all disciplines, with some superb galleries and exhibition spaces open to visitors. The Poly is a great example, with a constantly updating schedule of exhibitions, talks,

workshops, performances and even a cinema, engaging lovers of the arts across a whole spectrum of mediums. Or perhaps you prefer life on the water? If so, Falmouth Sailing Week really needs no introduction – an annual event that draws visitors in their thousands every year and has its origins as a local regatta dating back at least as far as 1837. Of course, if a lazy day by the beach is more your thing, then the Falmouth area has some wonderful beaches to add to your itinerary. Gyllyngvase is perhaps the best-known, located just a ten-minute walk from the town centre with a fine crescent of sand. Popular with families and with great amenities, the water here is great for kids (and grown-ups) to keep busy whilst they leave you to sunbathe, and there are plenty of chances to enjoy the water in adventurous ways, be it with a coasteering tour of the coastline, or by hiring a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) and exploring it from the water! Afterwards, if you’re among the many hoping to sample the delights of the aforementioned food scene, then you won’t be disappointed. Open in the summer from 9am to 7pm from Monday to Thursday, then until 9pm from Friday to Sunday, Gylly Beach Café has everything you and your crew need to refuel. The ethos here is that ‘Good food takes a little longer’, and rightly so! Open throughout the year, this is the ideal place to enjoy anything from a relaxing coffee with homemade cake, to a tasty lunchtime treat or even an evening dinner with the family. It also has the added benefit of a bakery next door – the Bakery on the Beach. Alternatively, if you're looking for a more relaxing way to spend your time, why not instead book in for the day at St Michaels Cornwall Spa? Home to the largest hydrothermal pool in the south west, with plenty of treatments and experiences available, it’s the perfect venue in which to enjoy some ‘r&r’. And when you’re done, round off the day with a two or threecourse meal at Brasserie on the Bay where, by working closely with local producers, farmers and fishermen, the chefs deliver a menu that champions everything grown, reared and hooked in Cornwall. Put simply, Falmouth is a microcosm of everything that makes Cornwall so attractive to so many, with which Matthew Rowe and

Martyn Rohrs, founders of award-winning Cornish estate agents, Rohrs & Rowe, agree. Perhaps unsurprisingly, they have seen exceptional demand in recent times in the Falmouth area. “In fact,” says Matthew, “after having recently successfully sold a number of the best properties in Falmouth at record prices for their areas and roads, we are still experiencing excellent demand from motivated buyers. As examples of the homes that Rohrs & Rowe have sold recently, Matthew shows us to Chy Wyn. With great views across Falmouth Bay, this three-bedroom home occupies an enviable spot close to Gyllyngvase beach. Beautifully kept gardens provide space in which to enjoy the sun, as does a broad, firstfloor balcony – the perfect spot for a glass of something chilled after a day spent exploring. Recently updated throughout, with a large garage offering the potential for development subject to permissions, it comes as no surprise that Chy Wyn did not remain on the market for long. Another example is 13 Stratton Terrace, also a Grade II listed residence but from the Georgian era. Once the residence of a packet ship captain, who is believed to have had it designed to match his cabin, the accommodation today combines immaculate interiors with astonishing water views to create the dream coastal home. It sits in an elevated position, enjoying stunning views across the river to the pretty village of Flushing on the opposite shore, and lies conveniently close to the many facilities for which Falmouth has become so popular. With additional accommodation in the form of a two-bedroom annexe, along with a one-bedroom, ground-floor apartment, there’s plenty of room for a family with guests to spread out. If you have a property in the Falmouth area and are considering selling, Rohrs & Rowe continue to see exceptional demand for properties there, and as such are always on the lookout for further homes to satisfy this.

iscovering your perfect door can be a tricky task, particularly when trying to decipher the many options available on the market. At Collingtons, the team understand this conundrum, which is why they only supply doors that are durable and secure, and that exceed expectations. “Our Apeer composite doors are 70mm in thickness,” says General Manager, Steve Cobbin, “to provide a robust, durable and weather-resistant door. They have a super-strong, metal reinforced and highly insulating polyurethane core, and are double rebated, which adds additional draught protection by creating an internal secondary seal. At Collingtons, we only supply 70mm composite doors, rather than the 44mm options, which ensures our customers have the best product available.” Collingtons’ anti-bump, anti-drill, antipick, anti-snap, Kitemarked cylinder lock barrels are fitted as standard to every Apeer door. These locks are ‘Secured by Design’ accredited, which is the official police security initiative that works to improve the security of buildings. And as if that wasn’t enough, the doors are also triple-glazed with an anti-tamper glazing system. Apeer doors offer the very latest in design and materials, helping to keep the heat in

and the cold out, making them some of the most energy efficient on the market. And at this energy conscious time, keeping the heat in has never been so important, so there couldn’t be a better time to fit a door that not only guarantees style, but also security and efficiency! As well as all of this, doors from Apeer are low-maintenance, and allow you to choose from a wide range of robust RAL colours, in both contemporary and traditional styles, so that your new door promises to match both you and your home seamlessly. “Our Helston showroom is open and has examples of our Apeer Composite GRP doors,” says Steve, “so you can visit and see for yourself how they feel and operate. We’re open Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4.30pm, and would be delighted to meet you, talk you through the products and answer any questions you may have.”

Storage worries are a thing of the past, as a new state-of-the-art self-store facility opens in Falmouth.

ave you outgrown your garage? Does your shed feel like it’s bursting at the seams? Do you have a growing business that is struggling for stock space? Storage can be a problem both at home and at work and there’s nothing worse than not having space to keep treasured possessions safe and secure. Luckily, the team at Britannia Lanes has come up with an innovative and ground-breaking solution to solve all your storage needs right here in Cornwall! This long-standing Cornish go-to brand for removals and storage has just announced that it will be opening its first pioneer un-manned self-store site in Falmouth in September this year, as Sarah explains: “This will be the first of its kind in the Duchy. Customers will be able to just turn up and choose the size of

room required. They will be able to complete a digital contract on a machine that will then give an access code into the facility.” This ease of access will be revolutionary for the people of Cornwall. Many people don’t realise that using a self-storage unit can be much more cost effective than other options. For homeowners, it’s considerably cheaper than buying a bigger property, especially if you only have a few pieces to store. Business owners can save too by not having to rent extra warehouse space, and with the advantage of short-term contracts this can give additional finacial flexibility within your business. Full renovations of the preceding facility on Bickland Water Road have taken over a year but, as we go to press, they are now due to complete in a matter of weeks. The

Lane family has been excitedly working on this new project which they hope will be the first of many ‘satellite’ self-store facilities across the south west and how they see their business growing for the next generations to come. After becoming the first self-store facility in Cornwall back in 2000, Britannia Lanes are keeping their fingers firmly on the pulse of the self-storage industry and will become one of the first entirely un-manned indoor facilities in the UK. The 24-hour facility has a bespoke self-check-in pod where customers can choose, book and check in to their units. Gone are the days of padlocks and losing your keys – access to the units is achieved via an app on your phone. The site was purchased in April, and since then the facility has undergone full renovations including a new roof, full re-clad and the installation of a state-ofthe-art self-store fitout, allowing Britannia Lanes to utilise some of the newest and most innovative security technology available. The facility boasts 136 units ranging in size from 25sqft to 250sqft, meaning that whether you just want to store a few boxes and surfboards to make room in your garage or have a full house when moving, there is a unit size to suit everyone. The facility spans three floors and will even include a lift for both goods and passengers, making your self-storage needs easier to realise than ever before. The site will be truly revolutionary, incorporating the highest level of security to provide an unrivalled 24-hour service.

Bringing its services well into the modern age, Britannia Lanes has spent decades getting to know its customers and what’s important to them. This includes the secure storage of their treasured family belongings, and the importance of ease of access. So, if you need self-storage, be sure to register your interest by sending the team an email; they are currently running a waiting list, and will be in touch soon with exact opening dates, unit sizes and availability, all of which will soon be pre-bookable. Sarah adds: “The plan is, that this will be the first of many of these facilities across Cornwall. It’s important for us as a company, and for our customers, that we are agile and move with the times. We’re used to having peaks and troughs as our business obviously follows the, sometimes volatile, housing market. Our satellite storage will help manage this, both in terms of our business and our customer’s needs.”

ith the varied and often wild weather we’ve experienced over the last couple of years, many of us have been left with little opportunity to properly maintain our gardens. This means that there are lawns to mow, patios to clean and fences to paint! For those of us who enjoy spending time outdoors, whatever the season, I think we can all agree that there’s a small part of us that wishes garden maintenance would just magically happen. However, sadly, there is no such thing as a garden fairy! What there is, however, is a low-maintenance alternative to replace your fencing. If your panels have borne a little too much of the brunt of the windy winters over the last couple of years, then why not consider ColourFence? to task’ for the autumn and winter months ahead. By installing a ColourFence, you simply don’t need to worry about your fence blowing down. What’s more, if you prefer to simply sit back and enjoy your garden space rather than have to constantly maintain it, a metal fence from ColourFence is a superb, lowmaintenance solution. It’s incredibly popular due to the fact that it’s highly durable, not to mention that it comes with a 25-year materials guarantee. Available in four colours, and with plain or more decorative options available, including a trellis topper to complete the look, if you’re after a replacement fence that you don’t need to maintain or paint every year, then ColourFence is certainly for you. In fact, other than hosing it down a couple of times a year, there’s zero work required from you to keep your fence in tip-top condition. It’s also guaranteed to withstand gusts of up to 130mph!

Anybody fortunate enough to have had access to their own garden over the last couple of years, will have almost certainly made the most the space, especially at times when pandemic restrictions prevented us from spending time outdoors elsewhere. This has led to a significant increase in how we value these spaces, and also a change in how we use them, with many incorporating outdoor kitchens, dining areas, and even garden bars. Now, with restrictions lifted, we can enjoy all of these with friends and family. To ensure we can make the most of the opportunities the summer weather affords us, before the autumn and winter storms begin to set in, it makes sense to update our gardens with a product that’s there to last! Another reason we have come to value our outdoor spaces more, is the way in which they allow us to reconnect with nature. From wildflower patches that attract our favourite pollinators, to hedgehogs, badgers and even foxes, there’s something truly rewarding about welcoming nature into your garden. With ColourFence, to ensure you continue to provide corridors for the critters who grace your space with their presence, all you need do is ask the installer! Animal highways for hedgehogs, foxes, badgers and even

neighbourly cats can easily be fitted almost anywhere in your fence, offering a vital route through gardens. Finally, it might not just be fencing that you need, which is why ColourFence also offer beautiful new gates and rails to add even more appeal to your garden. ColourRail comes in over 300 beautiful colours and multiple styles, whilst ColourGate brings a co-ordinated and secure option to your garden. You can even match your fences, gates and rails to your shed, thanks to ColourShed! These metal garden sheds refuse to groan even under the weight of heavy snow and rain, and provide lots of options for the homeowner who wants to get their garden sorted and then enjoy it. So, whether you’re looking at your fence and questioning its ability to deal with another windy winter, or are looking to completely overhaul and colour match your garden fence, shed, gate and rails, ColourFence has you covered. With the promise of unrivalled durability and a 25-year guarantee, it’s really a no-brainer for anybody in search of the ‘easy life’ when it comes to garden maintenance!

From fun and funky…

A

t the end of a busy day, when the hustle and bustle of life has calmed and we step in through our front door in the evening, there is one thing we can always count on for calm, comfort and rest – our bed. However, many of us are sleeping on a mattress that might not be quite right for us, has passed its best, or isn’t giving us the support we need to get the most out of our sleep. As we lead increasingly busy lives, we thought it only appropriate to take a look at exactly what we should be looking at when it comes to the perfect bed, with help from the Christie’s Bed Shop.

 BELOW … via simple Shaker style…

We spend around a third of our lives in bed, so if you’re having difficulty sleeping, one of the first things to look at is your bed. What you sleep on plays a huge part in how well you doze. A comfortable, supportive bed can make the difference between a restorative night’s sleep and poor-quality sleep that results in tiredness and fatigue, with research showing that sleeping on an uncomfortable bed could rob you of up to an hour’s sleep. A recent statistic from The Sleep Charity suggests that 40% of adults and children suffer with sleep issues, and much of this could very well be down to our beds and mattresses. While you could be doing all the right things when it comes to sleep – eating the right foods, exercising regularly, switching off gadgets before bedtime, winding down properly and sleeping in a cool, quiet and dark bedroom – if you’re sleeping on an old, unsupportive and unhealthy bed you still won’t get a refreshing night’s sleep. Your bed is by far the most significant element of a good night’s rest. It is near impossible to get a deep, effective sleep on an old, uncomfortable bed. Mattresses lacking comfort, space and support are likely to leave you waking tired and achy and will also have a significant impact on your partner’s sleep, too. Quite often a mattress has worn out long before you realise. That’s why the National Bed Federation recommends replacing your mattress every seven to eight years, after which a mattress has been subjected to over 20,000 hours of wear and tear!

Investing in something that you’ll essentially be spending a third of your time using has never been more important, and your mental and physical wellbeing could certainly be improved with the right choice. The team at Christie’s Bed Shop are primed and ready with a wealth of knowledge and advice when it comes to beds and mattresses, and are on hand in their expansive Penryn showroom to help you find the perfect match for your individual needs. While buying online can be convenient and may be the only option for some, the surest way to find the mattress that works best for you is to try it out for yourself by popping off your shoes and getting comfy. The National Bed Federation suggests that you lie on a mattress for as long as ten minutes to get a feel for the level of comfort and support, and certainly try more than one. From pocket-sprung and orthopaedic to memory and gel foam mattresses, you’ll be spoilt for choice at Christie’s, and with an incredible range of bedsteads to accompany them you’re sure to find your ideal match, with prices to accommodate any budget. A good way to check if the bed you are lying on is too soft, too hard, or just right is to lie on your back, and slide your hand in the hollow of your back. If it slides in too easily, the bed may be too hard for you (leading to pressure on your hips and shoulders); if it’s a struggle to slide your hand in, then the bed is probably too soft. If you can move your hand with just a little resistance, the bed may be just right for you. Whether you’re looking to re-gain control over sleepless nights, or improve on waking up with aches and pains on an old mattress, the team at Christie’s are on hand to help and personally guide you through their extensive range towards your perfect match.

A PIECE

Discover the benefits of holiday lodge ownership at Tregoad Holiday Park near Looe.

E

nabling the ultimate home-soil holidays that have, in recent years, become so popular, lodge ownership at Tregoad Holiday Park is an attractive option for anybody looking to invest in their future staycations. Be it for a growing family, or for romantic escapes away from the trappings of a busy work schedule, nothing beats knowing that at the end of the week, you can drop it all and head for Cornwall, where your own little piece of lock-up-andleave luxury awaits your arrival. Since acquiring the park in 2020, Waterside Holiday Group have invested heavily in Tregoad, and the team were delighted to be named 'Holiday Park of the Year 2021' in the Cornwall Tourism Awards, but really, it was no surprise. A range of on-site activities and family friendly facilities make staying here a joy, not to mention the incredible foodie offering available at Stargazy Bar & Grill. It also lies in close proximity to Looe, an incredible destination in its own right and providing sea, sun and sand seekers everything they need to enjoy their time by the coast. For lodge owners, the park also provides a fully managed sublet scheme, allowing you to generate an income from your investment during the times that you’re not using it, which will also help to mitigate the costs associated with purchasing a holiday retreat. This includes property upkeep, meaning you can rest assured your lodge will be beautifully

kept, ready for you to move in and enjoy whenever the mood takes you. So, what about the lodges themselves? In fact, Tregoad has a selection of different lodges, with both two and three-bedroom models available. And with some tempting additional options such as hot tubs and being pet friendly, absolutely everybody can come to Cornwall and make lifelong holiday memories. Lots of the lodges have incredible views, too, and for anyone contemplating buying a pre-loved lodge over one that’s brand new, you may be intrigued to know that these start at just £49,995! Perhaps the best part, however, is that if you purchase your holiday home at Tregoad, you won’t pay any site fees for 2022 or 2023 (subject to terms and conditions)! If you’re interested, and would like to know more about lodge ownership at Tregoad, the site team are always happy to extend the invitation to come along for an Experience Day. The perfect opportunity to see in person the luxury lodges and the incredible holiday lifestyle they afford, we highly recommend booking in and discovering for yourself everything that this award-winning Cornish holiday park has to offer.

A development of privately owned holiday homes offering a coastal haven of peace and relaxation.

O

cean Cove is a five-star private holiday park that benefits from incredible views out across the Atlantic ocean, and on a clear day you might be lucky enough to spot Lundy Island in the distance. There are 79 lodges in total across the park, kept safe and secure by a gated entrance and an on-site park warden who is available in case of emergencies. With new and pre-owned holiday homes for sale, there are a variety to choose from; sales typically complete within a month of putting down a deposit. Whilst subletting is not permitted – the reason why this is such a quiet and peaceful retreat – families and friends are welcome to enjoy your property throughout the year. Owners have exclusive use of the 15m indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, steam room, gym and lounge, recently refurbished to a very high standard and open seven days a week. Cornwall’s Atlantic coast spans over 40 miles from Bude to Perranporth along a wildly beautiful stretch of north Cornwall. Ocean Cove couldn’t be better situated between the quintessentially Cornish

Boscastle harbour and historic Tintagel, steeped in myth and legend and home to the mystical castle. You can access both on foot via the South West Coast Path, perfect for working up an appetite before a bite of lunch at Boscastle Farm Shop or a well-earned cream tea at the Bossiney Tea Room. Trebarwith Strand is close enough for an evening swim or early morning surf, while the enchanting woodland and waterfalls at St Nectan’s Glen are less than a mile away. Alternatively, why not walk down to Bossiney Cove, just five minutes away? With brand new lodges for sale, this is an opportunity you may not want to miss, with a front-row lodge available this August! Whichever lodge you choose, you are assured of years of Cornish holidays that will make forever memories.

his is what you’ll find at Cornish Traditional Cottages. Established in 1964, they are one of the very few remaining Cornish, independent, family owned holiday letting agencies around. With 58 years of experience in the industry, they have become experts in the Cornish market, building strong and loyal repeat business for the owners they partner with. No doubt it’s down, in no small part, to their key values – to always provide an honest and efficient service, ensuring owners get the advice they need to make the right choices for them and for the communities their holiday homes are located in. Specialising in Cornwall, they market all areas and all types of holiday homes in the county, with a competitive fixedrate commission. There are no penalties or additional costs to feature your property on their website, nor do they penalise you for taking your own family weeks at your holiday home. They are on hand from day one and every step of the way thereafter. They’ll advise you on every aspect of holiday letting, from statutory responsibilities to décor, and even the duties of your housekeeper. They’ll create a bespoke pricing structure for your holiday

cottage, and once they’ve started marketing your property, they’ll keep a close eye on its performance throughout the year, providing updates, suggestions and thorough annual reviews. They work hard to make the process of letting your property straightforward, enjoyable and, most importantly, successful. They are here to work with their owners and make sure to never oversaturate an area, so maximum occupancy can be achieved throughout the year. What’s more, with a flexible, fully managed service, you can rest assured that all is in hand with this family run Cornish agency. Why does Cornwall continue to ‘buck’ the projected trend for a decline in UK staycations this year?

F

orget about flight delays, lost luggage and the other uncertainties of travelling abroad; thousands of holidaymakers are finding that for a hassle-free summer getaway, self-catering letting agency, Cornish Cottage Holidays, provides the perfect solution. As we catch up with Phil Pascoe, the company’s Operations Manager, he explains why he believes many are choosing staycations here in Cornwall this year, over foreign travel. “Despite the prediction by numerous travel industry experts that people would holiday abroad in their droves in 2022,” says Phil, “over 21,000 people are already booked in to enjoy breaks in our 700 properties this

summer. In a post-staycation-boom era, where bookings for self-catering owners are coming later and competition is high, we at Cornish Cottage Holidays are utilising our years of industry experience to continue succeeding, despite the turning tide.” Key to this, Phil explains, is the company’s steadfast focus on balancing the number of bookings they achieve for owners with the income rate charged for bookings. “Remaining confident in our proven marketing tools and having faith in our data-led pricing matrix, is instrumental – and the reason why we are still seeing large volumes of bookings at the optimum price.”

So, why is it, despite travel restrictions now being a distant memory, that people are still choosing to enjoy a self-catering holiday in beautiful Cornwall, over other holiday destinations? “We think it has to do with three main reasons,” says Phil. “Firstly, the pandemic travel restrictions meant many people discovered Cornwall as a holiday destination for the very first time. There are so many picturesque corners of Cornwall that, for many, had remained unknown until Covid happened. But now people have come across this gem, they can’t stop exploring its charming nooks and crannies. We are seeing these visitors come back to the region again and again! “Ease of travel is also a factor,” continues Phil. “With travel chaos in UK airports, the instability of major travel operators, and numerous other global factors, holidaying closer to home is an easy, stress-free option. Since 2019, we have seen a 40% uplift in the number of family groups enjoying summer holidays in the region, which is unsurprising, given that Cornwall’s pretty, unspoilt beaches could rival any found in the Mediterranean, without the risk of hours sat in the airport departure lounge.”

The third and final reason, says Phil, is that the choice of self-catering accommodation across Cornwall is incredible! “Whether you’re looking for a stunning contemporary detached home like Beach Haven in Perranporth, which is perfect for a getaway with the children and dog in tow, or a cosy bolthole like Lazy Lodge near Porthtowan, complete with a hot tub, we have options for all.” “As an agency,” says Phil, “we strive to provide an outstanding service to both our holiday home owners and guests. Being located in Redruth means that we can effectively service all of our holiday homes, with a dedicated local property management team who are on hand 24/7, efficiently taking care of any matters that should arise.” Indeed, with such first-class service and accommodation offering, plus the many beautiful beaches, wonderful attractions and delightful eateries that Cornwall is home to, it really is no wonder that visitors continue to head to our beloved Duchy for their holidays. So, if you’re an owner who is considering letting your holiday home, why not contact Cornish Cottage Holidays’ New Property Team? They’d be delighted to give you an honest appraisal of your property’s rental potential, and all the information you need around the services they offer to new owners. Look at the drawings on the site and if possible the 3D model to give what you are looking at the context of where it will be built. Get a schedule of room sizes, including room heights and then try and compare them to spaces you know. Think about how you are going to use key spaces, try and visualise using them as designed to see if the space flows as you envisage using it.

QUALITY GERMAN KITCHENS & APPLIANCES

Understand the key views and areas of privacy that are important to you, look at the location size and orientation of windows to ensure they give you what you are looking for. Try and think about the things you would improve about your current home and then ensure the design addresses them.

O

nly ten minutes from the sea and just three miles from the Eden Project, this quaint little converted cider press with inverted accommodation and double glazing stands across the river from the original mill, surrounded by peaceful grounds and woodland. Situated in the quintessentially Cornish Luxulyan Valley, with great natural beauty and recently awarded World Heritage Site status, the riverside garden runs down to the banks of the boulderstrewn River Par which forms part of the boundary. Luxulyan village and St Blazey, 1.5 miles respectively, each have a pub and local shop/post office, or for a wider selection of amenities, the towns of Lostwithiel, Fowey and St Austell are all within a 15-minute drive. The large, south-facing beach at Par Sands and the small sandy harbour beach at Polkerris are both about a ten-minute drive away and there are boat trips available departing from Fowey. There are several golf courses within the immediate vicinity and the Saints’ Way coastto-coast recreational route passes nearby, linking Padstow in the north to the southern port of Fowey. Cycling is also available locally on The Camel Trail and in Cardinham Woods.

The Retreat, Widemouth Bay

W

idemouth Bay’s two miles of golden sand invites wave-riders, rock-poolers, sunworshippers and sandcastle builders alike. If you prefer your feet on terra firma, then the South West Coast Path offers adventures on foot in both directions. Step back just 400 yards from the ocean and you’ll find The Retreat. Designed for easy holiday living, this modern haven has everything you could ask for when it comes to a coastal escape. The Retreat is a homestay with integrity, whose accommodation is perfectly laid out and beautifully presented. Iroka Design, a leading Cornish interiors company, is responsible for the elegant and understated coastal theme that runs throughout. The refreshing combination of functionality and style makes for a holiday home that ticks all the boxes for every guest. The open-plan living and dining area is a sociable space for beginning and ending the day, while bedrooms entice sun-kissed and ocean-weary adventurers to rest their heads and regenerate for the next adventure. Throw open the patio doors and invite the sea air in before stepping out into the enclosed tiered garden for a morning coffee or a sun-downer. Catch the last rays of sun on the lawn before enjoying an al fresco dinner on the lower terrace.

Into the blue Raising the curtain The Acorn Theatre, Penzance’s favourite venue for live entertainment, is proud to present some fantastic events this summer season. Nestled in the heart of Penzance town, The Acorn Theatre in Parade Street is a stone’s throw from the famous historic Chapel Street and is surrounded by quality restaurants and eateries. The stunning building, originally a Methodist chapel, now serves as a local theatre and has recently hosted the popular Penzance Literary Festival and seen the likes of Tony Christie and USA Jazz Guitarist BD Lenz perform live on stage. The Acorn has a variety of events coming up to suit all music lovers, such as the extremely talented The Darkside of Pink Floyd, and The Tannahill Weavers, a visiting pipe band from Scotland. For blues lovers, how about tickets for the London-

based trio 5 Points Gang, and what better time than summer in Cornwall to come and see tribute band, the Beach Boyz! If you consider yourself a budding Miss Marple, they also host Murder Mystery evenings that will have you guessing who dunnit! The theatre has a fully licensed bar selling local real ales, Cornish ciders, and a selection of spirits and bar snacks. They also sell a selection of hot drinks, so why not pop in for a great barista-style coffee? Whatever the reason for your visit, you are guaranteed a warm welcome by Richie and Helga (Acorn Management) and their fantastic team of volunteers. Naturally drawn by a common love September 3rd sees the opening of a joint exhibition featuring two of Lighthouse Gallery’s most respected and acclaimed artists – Michael Praed and John Piper. Discover calm harbours and windswept moors, vivid blue seas and monumental skies. These timeless scenes are the result of a deep-seated knowledge and love of west Cornwall shared by both artists; in them you’ll find constancy and reassurance, joy and peace. Michael has spent over 50 years observing the west Cornwall coastline, and his work has a stillness

and serenity which mesmerises and envelops the viewer. John Piper’s central subject is the west Penwith moorland. He depicts this landscape with an immediacy and sense of fascination which is conveyed in each brushstroke. John’s subject is reassuringly constant, but his style and approach remain playful. FARM TO FORK For food with provenance, Trevaskis Farm is the go-to destination year round.

P

ick your own at Trevaskis is a truly wonderful day out for all the family and in early summer the poly-tunnels and fields have an abundance of ripe fruit and vegetables just waiting to be harvested, with over 100 crops grown across 28 acres. As we head towards autumn and the pick your own season comes to end, there is still an abundance of fresh produce to be had at The Market, Trevaskis’ very own farm shop. In season, the crops from the farm stock the shop’s shelves and these are supplemented by the best of the best from further afield, ensuring there is always quality fresh produce to be had. The Market is so much more than a farm shop though, and truly competes with the convenience of supermarket shopping. Open from 8am to 8pm daily it has a renowned butchery that focuses on the farm’s own home-reared meats. You won’t find a better place to stock up on the best quality cuts, all with the highest of provenance. Whether you are having a summer barbeque or are looking to impress friends for dinner, the meat counter has lots to offer, all at an affordable price. You’ll also find a fishmongers, deli, bakery and dairy, along with a dry goods

section, which means that you can do a full weekly shop in the knowledge that almost all produce is home-reared and home-grown. After you’ve done your shopping, why not treat yourself to a wander around the idyllic tree-lined farm that has been nurtured into a magical farming and food emporium over the last 40 years? Once you’ve worked up an appetite you’ll want to refuel, and where better than the Farmhouse Kitchen Restaurant, which is renowned for its cake counter with over 40 on display! But it’s not just cake that graces the menu here, the large selection of homecooked dishes – which change between breakfast, lunch and dinner – gives guests unrivaled choice and experiences, whether that be sat in the large main restaurant, or dining al fresco when the weather is kind.

iscovering DNANSLEDAN If you’ve yet to discover Nansledan on Cornwall’s north coast, perhaps it’s time you paid a visit? ABOVE é A fast growing community on the edge of Newquay BELOW ê Community allotments and wildflower meadows

O

ne of the first things that strikes you when you visit Nansledan is that, for a newly built community, it looks very Cornish. And that’s no accident. Just two miles from Newquay’s town centre, the Duchy of Cornwall’s awardwinning extension to Newquay has been meticulously fashioned to reflect the character of the area, with a design that has been honed with local input since 2005. Work started on Nansledan in 2014, but it was in the planning long before then. In fact, the development is inspired by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, whose Duchy of Cornwall estate owns most of the land in the area. The Prince’s vision was to create a vibrant, mixed-income community with homes, shops, offices and green spaces, all within walkable neighbourhoods. It was to create a place that could meet growing local housing needs, but also generate a more diverse range of jobs for Newquay’s highly seasonal economy.

Today, Nansledan already contains almost 600 homes, more than 30 shops and businesses, as well as a primary school (with a nursery school currently under construction) and plenty of green spaces for the public to enjoy. When it’s finished, it will have 4,000 homes, providing around 4,000 new jobs and a resident population of almost 8,000 people. Next year, work will begin on Market Street – an inviting new high street lined with threeand four-storey buildings to include a mix of shops, offices and homes, as well as events and leisure activities. And whilst this all is yet to come, when you walk around Nansledan today, there’s already plenty to see and it changes all the time. It has become a magnet for independent traders and artisans, and is fast becoming a lifestyle shopping destination, with many young businesses that place sustainability at the heart of what they do, be that sourcing locally or going plastic free. From Cornish homewares and artisan hats, to vintage clothing and beauty boutiques,

Nansledan is already home to an exciting – and growing – mix of shops, not to mention the various cafés and eateries specialising in delicious, local Cornish produce. Spread over 540 acres, Nansledan is built with leisure, health and wellbeing in mind, with plenty of outside space, community allotments, adventure playgrounds and footpaths for the community and visitors to enjoy. This includes 75 acres of wildflower meadows and farmland right on the doorstep at Pras Trewolek (Trewollack Meadow), which is perfect for walking, cycling or exercising your dog. In actual fact, when finished, Nansledan will boast the equivalent of 180 football pitches of natural open space, and it’s not only through its green spaces that the site is blazing an environmental trail. It’s also leading the charge when it comes to wildlife, pioneering the use of built-in nest boxes for migratory birds (an average of one per home), as well as bee bricks. Hundreds of trees are being planted, too, and there are even ‘edible’ streets in the plans that will be lined with fruit trees and herbs. For anyone thinking of moving to Nansledan, it offers a range of beautiful, architect-designed homes, each built to the

highest quality by a team of award-winning south-west housebuilders. From apartments, coach houses and cottages, to large detached family homes, each is finished to the same exacting standards. The development’s lowcarbon homes are constructed with local, natural materials like slate, granite and recycled aggregate blocks, and some of the highly energy-efficient buildings are pioneering the use of solar slates, with ground and air-source heat pumps planned in future phases. This means that homes here are already exceeding the 2030 climate change targets as set by RIBA and LETI. A third of the new homes are set to provide affordable housing for local people, making an important contribution towards Cornwall’s housing needs. Almost three quarters of the open market houses sold at Nansledan have gone to people with a Cornish postcode; around half of those have been bought by people in the Newquay area; and holiday lettings are forbidden, a policy aimed at fostering a community spirit and providing a year-round feeling of vibrancy and vitality. In fact, it is the creation of a community that lies at the very heart of this exciting development. “Nansledan is designed to meet local needs and we want people living and working here to have a stake in their community,” says the Duchy of Cornwall’s Estate Director, Ben Murphy. “That’s why it’s thriving. We’re providing a mixture of new homes to suit people at all stages in their lives. We’re creating new habitats and access to nature for local people, and we’ve put in things like schools, exciting shops and business space early on, to create a buzz and diversity that you just don’t get with most modern developments.”

esigned to provide environmental education, employability training and community events, Newquay Orchard is an open green space that welcomes everyone. It brings to life the aims of the Duchy’s sustainability strategy and is part of a network of green spaces throughout the new Nansledan development bridging the old town and the new. Built by the community, for the community, Newquay Orchard provides a place for local people to grow, learn and play in nature. From what was just a patch of neglected land six years ago, the urban greenspace has now flourished into a centre for culture, education and collaboration. Run by community interest company (CIC) Urban Biodiversity, the aim is simple: to create the best community green space in the UK. They are successfully achieving this by working with local communities to create high-quality, low-impact, environmental urban spaces as a platform for sustainable economic growth. Visitors can explore the three acres of maturing Cornish apple orchard, picnic in the community field and forage in the forest garden, or amble along the beautiful fruit espalier, see what’s growing in the An Lowarth community grow space and play hide and seek in the woodland walk. Nature lovers will be able to spot bees in the lavender, rabbits hopping along the Cornish stone hedge and might even spy the resident kestrel as she soars high above.

The success of Newquay Orchard, since its inception and initial funding back in January 2015, bears testament to a vibrant community of passionate volunteers. They inspired the site’s slogan ‘built by the community, for the community’. Throughout the past six years Newquay Orchard has worked with over 850 volunteers, bringing people from all walks of life together on common soil. The project gives people the opportunity to share their time and skills. It empowers individuals by teaching them about horticulture and sustainable living, giving them the chance to meet new people and make lasting friendships. In 2021 Newquay Orchard also unveiled its new amphitheatre, formed by Cornish stone terraces, which can seat upwards of 500 people. This brand-new venue in Cornwall is one of the county’s biggest seated open-air performance spaces and offers local people the opportunity to experience live music and theatre in an inspiring environment.

FRUITS OF THE FORAGER Starting as an apprentice in his hometown in New Zealand, with a career that has, along the way, included multiple appearances on the BBC’s Great British Menu, Jude Kereama has cemented both a home and a name for himself by the sea here in Porthleven.

FOODIE Jude Kereama discusses the importance of foraging when it comes to building the seasonal menus at his two Porthleven restaurants.

I

first started foraging when I was a little boy growing up in New Zealand. My dad, who is Maori, was always keen to show me how to find sea clams, mussels, crabs, abalone, as well as other foraged seafood and vegetables. Today, I have taken the ideas he taught me and turned them into a unique part of our menus that I believe adds that extra bit of local flavour to every dish. In terms of the seasons, spring and summer are my favourite times to forage, as it is during those seasons that ingredients are in high abundance. Throughout the recent months of June and July, we’ve capitalised on the local presence of wildflowers and leaves, including nasturtiums, borage, dandelions, wild chicory, mustard leaves, cow parsley, sea spinach, and pepper dulse. We’ve also made good use of rosehips, elderflower, bilberries, and chickweed. Each time new ingredients come into season, we find a new way of including them in our dishes, and as we move through August, we will see the hedgerows burst with blackberries, elderberries, crab apples, kea plums, sea buckthorn, primrose, wild mint and cobnuts as they all make their annual appearance. Seaweed is another ingredient of which there’s no shortage here in Cornwall, and at our restaurants in Porthleven, we use it to enhance stocks, butters, garnishes, and in powder form to sprinkle on other ingredients. Foraged sea greens, meanwhile, can be blanched, pickled or braised. Fruits can be used fresh or stewed, turned into ice creams or sorbets, or made into syrups and used to flavour desserts. Put simply, there’s plenty available for those willing to go out and forage for it, and so much scope for creativity when you bring it back to the kitchen. Many of the ingredients I forage can be found right on our doorstep in Porthleven and Praa Sands, but we are also lucky to have the Helford nearby, with its rivers and woods filled with goodies. I get a real sense of satisfaction when I come back from foraging, and it’s also a fantastic way of spending time with my son, Joe. We’ve spent countless hours picking elderflowers to make cordials, gathering shellfish to bring home and cook, as well as other ingredients to use in the two restaurants. It’s exciting to be able to show him that you can eat for free and enjoy delicious dishes full of nutritional value. One of his favourites is wild garlic soup, which is beautiful with its bright green colour, and especially delicious when served with huge amounts of crusty homemade sourdough bread and butter. Elderflower cordial made into ice lollies or a fizzy drink is another firm favourite.

One of the things I learned all those years ago foraging with my own dad, was about the plants and leaves that heal. One of these was the Kawakawa tree, whose leaves were used to make a tea for stomach ailments, to make poultices for skin problems, and generally to promote a healthy immune system. The fruit, with passionfruit flavours, was also delicious. We used it to enhance fruit salads, and sometimes just dipped in chocolate. What I do now is very much the same as I did back then in New Zealand – bringing the flavours of the land into my new home and restaurants here in Cornwall. Many of the ingredients we find growing wild are simply not available from local suppliers, and so are only available by foraging. They are also much fresher this way, and I don’t think there’s anything more rewarding than cooking with ingredients that you’ve gone to the great effort of foraging. For anybody who fancies giving it a go, before ‘going solo’, I would suggest doing a course with an experienced forager first so that you’re certain of what you’re picking. This is essential, as there are many ingredients that look edible but can actually be very dangerous. But the beauty of foraging, once you get the hang of it, is that it can be enjoyed all year round. Even when autumn rolls around, it brings with it the last of the fruit, like sloes to make gin, hawthorn berries, damsons, blackberries, mushrooms, chestnuts, even apples, and it’s a wonderful way of enjoying Cornwall as the temperatures start to drop. These ingredients will hit our menus in a big way as we head towards the leaner months of winter, but until then, I very much intend to enjoy what the summer brings us!

hen most would be considering retirement, Cliff and Liz West, who enjoyed most of their working life as dairy farmers on the banks of the River Tamar, decided to try their hand at making their favourite spiced rum liqueur. It began as a hobby, and after many long hours of research and development, the Silver Award-winning Toffee Apple (Rum) Liqueur, was born and has remained a customers’ favourite ever since. Monarch Liqueurs is nestled in the tranquil Tamar Valley, and its now comprehensive range of rum, gin, whisky, vodka and brandybased liqueurs are produced in small batches and easily recognised under their Tamar Tipple banner, complete with an iconic logo of nearby Druxton Bridge. Every unique recipe liqueur is presented in a bottle that has been washed, dried, filled, capped, ribboned and labelled by hand in Cornwall, resulting in beautiful, keep-sake bottles that look every bit as good as the contents taste. This dynamic duo’s passion for developing new and exclusive flavours, with the finest ingredients sourced locally wherever possible, means that there is something for every palette across the range. Cornish Black Bee Honey is used to flavour the Honey and Spice Rum Liqueur, while the addition of Cornish Sea Salt adds depth to

the Salted Caramel Rum Liqueur. Over the years, recipes have been tweaked to reduce sugar content in line with modern tastes and only fresh spring water is used in the mixing process. It's no surprise then, that Monarch Liqueurs now has seven Silver awards and two Gold awards from Taste of the West under its belt! These include Silver for the Honey & Spice Rum liqueur, the Spiced Orange Whisky and the Salted Caramel Rum liqueur, plus Gold for the delicious Peach Brandy Liqueur and Apple Brandy Liqueur. And as Cliff and Liz continue to work on new and exciting flavours, like the recently released Spirit of Lanson gin, there are bound to be more to come! The liqueurs themselves are smooth enough to enjoy on their own, and are also delicious when added to a coffee or hot chocolate for a decadent treat. With online ordering and bespoke gift boxes available, you can enjoy a tasty tipple from Cornwall, wherever you are!

un by husband-and-wife team Andy and Margaret Sutherland, you’ll find home-from-home accommodation at The Top House Inn, coupled with a high level of personal service that is often aspired to but not often achieved by other hostelries. The Top House is one of a small group of chosen pubs that is a Cask Club member of St Austell brewery, so there is a superior selection of local ales, cider and lager, as well as some special Cornish gins and whiskeys along with a carefully selected wine list. This is complemented by a superb à la carte menu as well as the traditional favourites – the full English breakfast, Sunday roasts and summer barbeques all of which use locally sourced produce where possible, with an emphasis on freshly caught fish and seafood daily; all prepared by Head Chef Alex. A brand-new feature not to be missed is the Sutherland’s Vintage Tea Room. Recalling an era when tea was regarded as an important ritual to be enjoyed at leisure, the tea room features genuine vintage crockery from which to eat your home-baked cakes, Cornish cream tea or ice cream from the Gwella Dairy – a visit to which is to be recommended. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Lizard peninsula the area is the ultimate outdoor playground. With direct access to the South West Coast Path just yards from the inn and footpaths that meander across the downs

in every direction, this area is a walker’s paradise. If you don’t want to set out alone, then a local guide can be arranged to steer you in the right direction, sharing stories and secret spots, as well as teaching you how to forage from the clifftops. Off-shore there are sea adventures to be had with the world famous Kynance Cove a short (hired) cycle ride away. However, if you set your sights lower, then Lizard village has some unique shops selling crafted items made from local serpentine. Finally, the Top House Inn regularly has live music and entertainment; from a saxophonist playing at Sunday lunch to Cornish folk and Celtic music evenings with popular local artists playing guitar, singing and dancing. Every Wednesday all local musicians and singers, along with visiting players, are invited to get together and enjoy an evening of jamming. Landlord Andy treats every player or singer to a drink on the house and as an ex DJ to boot, he hosts his unique disco parties, which always go down well.

Finding creativity from immersion in one of Cornwall’s best-loved gardens: Trebah.

T

BELOW  A varied, heady mix of live and creative events

rebah Garden has been encouraging artists and those with creative souls to look beyond the pathways of the garden’s 26-acre site, to be overwhelmed by the scale of the gigantic, twometre-wide leaves of the Gunnera manicata, or the four acres of sea-blue hydrangeas, before leaping into the glistening waters off of the site’s private beach. Full of spectacular vistas, sounds and fragrances, it’s easy to understand why artists across the country feel inspired by the garden’s unique atmosphere, heritage and culture. In fact, The Trebah Garden Trust, who manage the site, have been welcoming artists to develop work since they first opened to the public in the 1980s, however 2022 has seen Trebah embark on a new chapter of its history, to become a garden with culture at its core. Since re-opening after the initial lockdowns, Trebah developed a 5 Year Culture Plan, created to re-affirm one of the charity’s key objectives, “to promote the education of the public on matters connected with the arts and sciences of garden land”, and they aren’t doing things by halves! Despite the challenges of the past 18 months, Trebah has developed and supported a whole host of creative talks, workshops, exhibitions, performances and projects. From local artist and gardener, James Meredew’s exhibition encouraging observers to think in macro about the secret world of the garden at night, to a performance followed by a whole-audience

swim off the beach; from a day-long workshop with wildlife gardener, Brigit Strawbridge, focused on raising awareness of native bees, to a moving feast created in partnership with local food gurus, Bango Kitchen, where diners were treated to six courses in six locations across the garden before having the chance to toast a giant marshmallow whilst gazing out across the Helford river, Trebah is certainly embracing its new identity of providing high-quality, immersive experiences for locals and visitors alike! We’re always amazed to see how the creative team at Trebah find new uses for the spaces and facilities of the garden, and this September it seems they’ll continue to keep us on our toes, by staging a brand-new piece of landscape theatre performed across the garden. In Tempest, incensed skies will cause a catastrophic disaster on the beach of a magical island. Shoulder-padded passengers will scatter as a new leader stands tall atop a cliff. Venture through an island full of noises in Trebah’s radical adaptation of the 400-year-old story from Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and decide for yourself: who really holds the power?

Celebrating more than just artefacts, Helston’s Museum of Cornish Life gives an insight into the everyday lives of times gone by.

H

ousing a wide-ranging collection through which we can share stories of life in Cornwall, Helston’s Museum of Cornish Life can be found in the town’s former market buildings. The collection on display ranges wildly in size, from the smallest item, a dice made from the tooth of a lion, to the largest – the historic building itself! Led by Annette McTavish, the museum’s Director, this iconic attraction is always looking for innovative ways to share what it has to offer, and to make it all accessible to as many people as possible. “For our programme of exhibitions,” explains Annette, “we offer exhibition tours that we share through social media and our website, and every week we offer virtual visits to care homes, giving residents the chance to dial into the museum.” Helston’s beloved museum continues to keep up with the times. Annette explains: “There is a movement in the museum sector, to question the heritage of museums themselves – their buildings and purpose – as well as the collections that live within them. At the Museum of Cornish Life, we believe that it is as relevant for us, as it is for the large

nationals.” As an example, we learn that in 2022, Dr Tehmina Goskar has started a Headley Fellowship at the museum through which she is applying modern ethical practises to writing an entirely new history of the collections and the museum itself. In doing so, she will be sharing a sector toolkit on how to deal with embarrassing problems in small museums. Annette explains, however, that while the museum covers a lot of historical ground, the main focus remains on everyday items. “We specialise in the things people owned and loved. As you look around the museum, you will see objects that remind you of things people you know have used in their home, garden, or carrying out a trade. The museum is home to things used and loved, not boxed up and kept for special occasions. It’s why we can see people in the things we share, and why the museum is so special.”

Whether you’re in search of that allimportant engagement ring for a moment to remember forever, or a gift that can say more than words, The Jewellery Workshop is sure to entice you in, the silver and gold reflecting the glint of the ocean in the harbour outside. As the epitome of all romantic gestures, finding the right ring to make your proposal is paramount, and with a very large range of diamond rings ready for your perusal, you’re sure to find the perfect one for your love amongst them. The eternity rings make for a wonderful sentimental symbol, and with a multitude of designs in every price range, leaving The Jewellery Workshop empty handed is an unusual sight. f he summer oLOVE TSPREADING Cards are a timeless and easy way to stay in contact, especially important during hard times.

ABOVE  The perfect gift

C

ards are a way of saying ‘thank you’, ‘I’m sorry’, ‘I’m here’. They can declare love, send sympathy or just let your friends and family know that you’re thinking about them. Receiving a card seems so much more special than a text or an email, as you know that the sender has taken the time to choose a beautiful design as well as to write a lovely message. Rather than being locked away on your phone or your computer they can also be displayed in your home, bringing joy each time you pass. This summer, the folks at Whistlefish are on a mission. During a season full of brightness and beauty it can be easy to forget that there are plenty of people having hard days. That’s why they’ve added two extra cards into their usual '10 for £10' deal, so you can keep spreading the love even when cutting back. Cards show kindness, compassion and care like no social media or messaging service ever can, so spread the love this summer and choose from a large range of designs created by handpicked artists in a range of both traditional and contemporary styles.

Whistlefish cards aren’t just good for human-kind either, they’re gentle on the earth too! Made from 100% recycled paper they are printed with non-toxic vegetable inks and packaged plastic-free. They are printed right here in Cornwall, supporting the local economy and minimising air miles. You can now visit the newly refurbished St Ives Whistlefish shop on Fore Street where you’ll also discover art and gifts, alongside the cards, meaning you can take home something special as a reminder of your holiday happiness. You’ll find a large range from pretty mugs and tea towels for decorating your kitchen, to travel print tote bags, luxury candles and Cornwall’s only organic gin with a Whistlefish twist. There’s something for everyone to treasure at Whistlefish stores this summer, so why not send a piece of the south west to someone you’re thinking of and spread a little happiness?

ART

A touch of

ALCHEMY

We’re delighted to welcome back one of Cornwall’s most skilled artisans, and to take a peek at the new magic she’s been weaving over the last year.

M

el Chambers is the creative founder behind Alchemy Tiles and, despite the changing and challenging times, she continues to evolve with ever more stunning creations. Diving deep into the arena of interior design, she brings her magical, alchemic touch to each and every home with her hand-carved and inlaid tile designs, with inspiring images and words. As one of the only creative tile makers in the UK still using the ancient 13th century technique of hand-carving and inlay, Mel’s work has become exclusively unique. Her bespoke interior designs, incorporating individually created tiles, have provided an opportunity for customers to have something made just for them, each piece being utterly bespoke, intimately personal, and designed from the heart. As each tile is hand-cut and then hand-carved, every space, nook and cranny can be worked with, which is a blessing for Cornwall’s beautiful old homes, which rarely offer the convenience of straight walls. Mel was delighted to win the SME Southern Enterprise Award for ‘Best Hand-Crafted Tile Company’ for a second year in a row in 2021, as well as becoming the ‘Made in Cornwall’ Member of the Year! She has been part of the Made in Cornwall scheme for the

last six years and, after rigorous testing by Trading Standards, received top marks for her work, being awarded the gold standard of an authentically Cornish product. With a string of awards to her name, not only is Mel keeping her ancient craft alive, she is also using it as a force for good. After launching three collections last year for local Cornish conservation projects, she’ll be launching another three this year at her annual exhibition in Port Navas, from Friday 26th to Sunday 28th August. You can check out Mel’s catalogue of beautiful home creations on her website, each and every one tailored to the customer and home. Every project includes a full consultation and design work before the piece is created, and all is included in the price. But the best part is that, because the designs can never be replicated, just like you, each one is totally unique. So, if you’re looking for something that brings you a daily smile and warmth in your heart, then why not indulge in a touch of alchemy with Mel Chambers.

Inspired by the fragile dimensions of sea-life, Emily explores the delicacy of what lies beneath the surface. Jellyfish have the power to simultaneously instil wonder and fear; just as these creatures can mesmerise, Emily’s light pieces do the same. Her Electric Sting series uses light and bold colours to highlight the hypnotic beauty of these translucent bundles of energy. These light pieces are UV prints on acrylic with LED taken from an original Emily Penfold ink painting. Please contact if you would love an Emily Penfold light piece or original jellyfish ink painting hanging in your home. Commissions also available.

FUSED GLASS BY CLAIRE HARRIS Beach Scene by Claire Harris

In this beautiful piece, the thin layers of glass are carefully cut to create the background image, then crushed glass (called ‘frit’) is added. Course frit adds extra texture, whilst the powdered frit creates the fluffy look of the clouds. This piece is depicted in its unfired state; it will gradually be heated in a specialist glass kiln to around 800 degrees Celsius, in a process that will take around 12 hours. Featuring the quote “Marriage is sharing life with your best friend, enjoying the journey along the way and arriving at every destination together” by Fawn Weaver, this wooden trivet is Cornish made and exquisitely hand carved by Mel Chambers of Alchemy Tiles. Using ancient 13th century inlay techniques, each piece is individually hand carved (not painted) with beautiful images and words into stunning bespoke and unique creations. Each handmade tile is held eternal in earth and time. Commissions welcome. uilding for Humanity is not an ordinary not-for-profit housing company. It's one with a purpose of improving affordable home ownership and rental properties, with profits used to self-fund the company's own homeless charity – Homes for Humanity. Modelled by the founders to develop the best, simple, most sustainable, low-energy performance homes to make housing accessible to those who can only dream of owning or renting an affordable home, Building for Humanity is a not-for-profit housing company reinventing affordable home ownership and affordable rental properties, with all profits donated to their homeless charity partner, Homes for Humanity. The big difference is that no one benefits from the company profits, apart from those who the company have set out to help; instead, they donate all surplus profits to provide the initial support work and the Step Forward programme that Homes for Humanity provides, in essence creating a self-sufficient eco system. With most of this income providing advice, installing insulation, heating measures and renewables into homes for individuals in fuel poverty, this fits perfectly with the company ethos of helping those most in need.

 ABOVE Working together towards a brighter future

 LEFT

Supporting our ex-military heroes

This is an incredible opportunity for families, individuals on low income, potentially homeless, homeless and any ex-military personnel to be mentored, trained, offered apprenticeships and the chance to work in any role throughout the company, and even help build the very homes which they will eventually be buying, renting and maintaining with the Building for Humanity team. Each site will have its very own Community and Training Hub where the community can meet for coffee, socialise, train and get involved in every aspect of the development, from the initial concept and design right through to construction, maintenance, ongoing upkeep and management of these properties. This is not just about building more affordable homes and social housing; this is about social re-engineering and showing these individuals that are usually on some form of government benefit that you can be rewarded for working and taking control of your future with the Humanity Credit programme. Building for Humanity is a proud member of the Armed Forces Covenant, and this project will demonstrate the team’s commitment to ex-military personnel, their spouses and their children.

Reducing

THE RISK Raising awareness around the types, and causes, of skin cancer.

S

kin cancer is by far the most common form of cancer seen in the UK. At Nuffield Health in Plymouth alone, they deal with roughly 5000 cases a year. The vast majority are related to excessive sun exposure and are therefore, theoretically, preventable. Ultraviolet light, both UVA and UVB, causes damage to the DNA in our skin cells, and this is continually being repaired. Broadly speaking there are three different types of skin cancer. The most common is basal cell carcinoma (BCC) – accounting for roughly 70% of cases. These tumours tend to grow slowly over years and have very little potential to spread outside of the skin. Some can be effectively treated with cream, but most require surgical removal, and unfortunately they are most commonly seen on the central face, especially on the nose, temples, or around the eyes. About 20% of skin cancer is squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). SCCs differ from BCCs in that they grow more quickly, usually over a period of two-to-three months, and do have the potential to spread to local lymph nodes or other organs. The vast majority, however, are cured with surgical excision, and the incidence of metastatic disease (spread) is less than 5%. The most important type of skin cancer is malignant melanoma (MM) – approximately 10% of cases. These cancers develop in the pigment cells in the skin (melanocytes), so often show a black colour, although they can be subtle with multiple different shades of

pigment, or even have no pigmentation at all, in which case they develop as red or pinkish lumps on the skin. MM is a potentially aggressive form of cancer, with a high chance of metastatic disease if untreated. It is vital that they are diagnosed and excised as quickly as possible, as if they are picked up early, when they are still thin, the prognosis is excellent, with over 95% of patients having a long-term cure. Recent data shows that although we are seeing more cases of melanoma every year, we are diagnosing them earlier. We can reduce the risk of damaging our skin and the most effective way of doing so is by using a high-factor sun-block. It should be applied liberally to all areas where the sun will reach, and re-applied if staying out in the sun for a long period, and especially after swimming. In addition, covering the scalp and protecting the eyes and eyelid skin with sunglasses is important. We can also try and reduce sun-seeking behaviour and avoid sunbed use, as the link with skin cancer is strong. If you would like to speak with one of Nuffield Health’s dermatologists, please get in touch with the confidential team by calling the number below.

SEEING CLEARLY Booking your cataract surgery may be easier than you think, with Duchy Hospital. é ABOVE Clear your vision with treatment from Duchy Hospital

L

osing our sight is something that worries us all as we get older, but with a little bit of professional guidance there are ways to combat an ailment that will affect many of us in our lifetime. Cataracts usually form very slowly over many years, and symptoms appear gradually, though they can also be unpredictable, normally occurring as a natural side-effect of ageing. That said, other elements can play a part, such as exposure to sunlight, certain medical conditions, or genetics. None of us should have to struggle with poor sight or cloudy vision, and Duchy Hospital are on hand to help, with four Specialist Consultant Ophthalmologists offering convenient appointments. Delaying treatment for cataracts is rarely an option and left untreated altogether could seriously impair your vision. The side-effects can become much worse, including cloudy, hazy or blurred vision, glare around lights, poor night vision, impaired colour vision, sensitivity to bright light and ultimately impaired vision which could lead to full or partial sight loss. The only treatment for cataracts is surgery, but when this should happen can be down to different factors. The right time for treatment would be advised by your ophthalmologist, based on your personal circumstances. For example, if your cataracts are age-related and

developing very slowly, you might be able to delay surgery until your problems with vision have worsened. If you are younger and your vision problems are caused by other factors, treatment may be a more pressing matter. Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed, with a high success rate and usually no need to stay overnight in hospital. During the surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens, which usually results in restoring clear vision. There are several lenses to choose from at Duchy Hospital, including multifocal, bifocal and toric, which can be discussed in your initial consultation. The surgery would usually be arranged within a matter of weeks following on from your first appointment. Duchy Hospital has a team of highly skilled Consultant Ophthalmologists; Mr Jones, Mr Kumaravel, Mr Patwardhan and Mr Westlake, each of whom have vast experience in all aspects of ophthalmology, and offer convenient appointments that suit you, with your choice of consultant. So, if you are struggling with your vision, why not give Duchy’s Private Patient Team a call today?
