Kurt Jackson’s current exhibition Kenidjack: A Cornish Valley draws to a close on February 26th. The renowned artist’s latest collection has changed considerably since it opened in August, with breathtaking new works replacing those that have sold. The subject of this show, the Kenidjack Valley, spills over with natural treasures and dramatic topography. It openly displays its heritage and signs of past industrial enterprises, while providing a home to a plethora of wildlife.

the photographic Martin Raskovsky’s creative genius is in fact an outstanding innovation to photographic art: after centuries of technical and technological evolution, the progress of the optical instrument that revolutionised our lives seems to deserve a new dimension. Impressionist painters accelerated the gesture of their brush strokes in order to capture the ephemeral and immediate nuances of light, while Raskovsky carries out the process in reverse: he already owns reality and, with a unique reﬁned ision, transforms photography into postimpressionistic masterpieces. Flowing waves and sinuous lines create a sense of movement that vibrates all the nuances of a wild and rampant nature.

This exhibition at the Jackson Foundation – a large, award-winning art-space in St Just – is a stunning collection of paintings and sculpture inspired by the journey of a small stream from its source on the moors, down through the valley and into the sea; celebrating the sights, sounds, history, heritage and wildlife encountered along the way. In the days of sail, the Navy were awarded a daily tot of either rum or gin, with sailors most commonly choosing rum and o cers opting for gin. Today, ‘splicing the mainbrace’ has come to mean a toast to victory, as well as toasting to the Queen. Mainbrace Cornish Dry Gin is therefore a natural and exciting extension of the brand’s range, which also includes Mainbrace Premium Golden Rum 40%, and Mainbrace Navy Strength Rum 54.5%. Distilled in Cornwall, Mainbrace Cornish Dry Gin is made in a traditional copper pot still, using the London dry style with no added sugars, sweeteners, essences, or other additives. How else are we to safeguard the future of our seas? Kicking off in January this year, Dive Project Cornwall has now ‘gone live’ on its ambitious project to educate hundreds of ABOVE thousands of young people, by delivering an On the road to education programme directly into schools becoming ocean influencers across the UK, in partnership with the Marine Conservation Society. Many of these children will never have had the opportunity to experience the ocean close at hand. They’ll leave this residential course, delivered in the breathtaking environment of Porthkerris, on the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall, as DI qualified Open Water Divers, ready to spread the word as ocean influencers.

ome women greet their period each month at the same time like clockwork, with minimal side effects or symptoms from their cycle. However, says Miss Lone: “For others the impending dread of what physical and/ or emotional symptoms will come during or before their next menstruation can be stressful and life disrupting. The debilitating pain, missing periods, irregular bleeding between periods, or prolonged bleeding, can all be signs of a menstrual disorder, one that should not be treated as the norm. “Most symptoms we experience during our menstrual cycles have explanations and usually there are a range of different treatments that can relieve or improve your symptoms. It can be hard to accurately diagnose these problems ourselves,” explains Miss Lone, “so seeking help from a gynaecologist may be necessary. A specialist can help investigate these symptoms and help you choose the best treatment or option to ensure your cycle is more manageable – not something you dread, or which prevents you from living your life.” Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is one of the three most common menstrual disorders. PMS refers to unpleasant or uncomfortable symptoms experienced during your cycle, usually more severe and disruptive than typical premenstrual symptoms. PMS are bloating, swollen breasts, fatigue and headaches, with physiological signs including irritability, anxiety, depression and diminished libido. Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (AUB) is another, says Miss Lone. “The most common type of AUB is menorrhagia – heavy and prolonged menstrual bleeding which can disrupt daily activities. Some also experience amenorrhea – absent menstrual periods for more than three monthly menstrual cycles, or irregular bleeding between cycles.” Dysmenorrhea is the third. “Most women experience some form of cramps before or during their menstrual period, but for some, painful menstrual periods can be debilitating and cause dizziness or feeling faint.” Don’t forget, you’re the best judge on what is normal for you.
