THE ULTIMATE GUIDE FROM

T

he shimmering waters of the Camel Estuary continue to draw people from across the UK, including those from other parts of the Duchy, and why wouldn’t they? Whether it’s on, off, or looking at the water, this stretch of Cornwall’s north coast is a playground for anybody seeking to reconnect with the natural world. Wading birds are easily espied on the estuary as you cycle the Camel Trail; a plethora of unique wild swimming spots provide shallow, sheltered and, in the summer at least, warm water in which to float beneath the sun. The area is something of a mecca for foodies, too, particularly with the presence of celebrity chefs like Rick Stein (page 42). For those who find awe in artistic expression, it’s also a hub of creativity with a wealth of artists and galleries drawing inspiration from the incredible landscape, as we discover from page 33. If you happen to be visiting with your fur-baby in tow, then you’ll definitely want to pop your head into Slickers Doghouse (page 4), where dogs and well-behaved owners are always welcome. You may also be looking for a luxury home-from-home from which to launch your estuary explorations, in which case you’ll find plenty of inspiration from page 20. Alternatively, if you’re considering making the move to Cornwall full-time and building your dream home here, from page 16 we take a look at a recent project sustainably brought to life by the architects at Arco2, before talking to the timber-frame experts at Post & Beam (page 18) who are proud to support Plant One Cornwall in a bid to restore the globally rare Celtic rainforest. In short, whether you’re exploring the fishing port of Padstow (23), the historic market town of Wadebridge (31), or are simply looking for ways in which to make the most of your time near the estuary (47), this year’s Cornwall Living guide to the Camel Estuary is the perfect companion to help you capitalise on your time spent exploring this coveted stretch of the Cornish coast. We hope to see you soon on your next Camel Estuary adventure!

The hidden Cornish gem that the locals love Follow the winding country lanes off the main Padstow to Wadebridge road (yes, there is something down there!) and within half a mile you’ll be greeted by the iconic Pickwick Inn and Oliver’s Restaurant. As the locals know, it’s certainly worth finding! As well as being crowned ‘Best Pub in Cornwall’ in the National Pub and Bar Awards 2019, the Pickwick’s reputation for food has made it a destination venue for decades for those ‘in the know’. Be warned, it gets busy but you can book a table in advance and the friendly staff will always do their best to accommodate you. The Pickwick ethos is all about using the finest local ingredients from on the doorstep. Expect plenty of local seafood, for instance Porthilly oysters (they overlook the beds), as well as seasonal game from a neighbouring farm, and make sure to leave room for one of their famously delicious desserts! The Pickwick chefs are masters at creating imaginative daily specials, alongside traditional hearty pub favourites with a twist. It’s a casual dining experience without any pretence, just great food, top notch service and a view to die for – a proper pub.

The restaurant and rooms are the latest addition to the family-run freehouse; the 100-seater open-kitchen restaurant boasts magnificent views over the Camel Estuary to Padstow and Rock and across the Atlantic ocean. The nine super-stylish rooms all enjoy the same wonderful vista, each with its own private balcony, where you can sit and enjoy the rolling Cornish countryside and watch the tide roll in. It’s fair to say that you won’t want to leave! For more information visit www.pickwickinn.co.uk

Reinforcing connections

with the outdoors As we head into the beautiful Cornish summertime, thoughts turn to time with our loved ones and heading outdoors to enjoy those balmy evenings. Indeed, if the last couple of years have taught anything, it is about our connection to the outside world and the importance of both protecting our natural surroundings and being immersed in nature. Nature connection certainly is a priority for all of us now more than ever, and with Wild Tipi, it is evident to see how much being outdoors has benefitted them as a family and those they work with. What’s more, it’s fair to say that their Giant Tipis add a whole new level to a garden soirée! As company owner, Sam, puts it: “So many families this year are opting to hire one of our Giant Tipis for garden parties with their loved ones to celebrate special occasions, which is fabulous to be a part of.” For more information email info@wildtipi.co.uk or call 07860785780

Keeping an ancient craft alive Mel Chambers, the creative spirit behind the multi award-winning Alchemy Tiles, is the only artist to create beautiful, hand-carved tiles using ancient 13th century techniques. Perfect for those who want something bespoke and personal, Mel’s beautiful works can help make any house a home. From individual tiles, to splashbacks, to bespoke bathrooms, fireplaces and kitchens, Mel carves every tile freehand, rather than painting them, meaning each tile is in itself a work of art – a thing of beauty and inspiration that can never be replicated. A

tranquil and intimate landscape with a sheltered richness formed by the many small woods and creeks that flank it, it comes as no surprise that the Camel Estuary is one of Cornwall’s most enchanting Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With the calming influence of the stretch of blue-green water that reaches from Padstow to Wadebridge, and the hum of the Cornish wildlife that occupies the natural haven, what could be a better place to call home? With sustainability, health, comfort and wellbeing at the core of their practice, the team at ARCO2 take inspiration from the Cornish way of life and the beautifully wild landscape that surrounds them, as Co-Director Ian Armstrong explains: “Sustainability is everything at ARCO2 and the reason for our existence. We set up the company in 2003 with a passion for sustainability, and were one of the only practices in the south west with fundamental sustainable architecture principles.” Today, the team’s track record speaks for itself, with numerous sustainable design and practice management awards under their belts. Not far from Rock at a site that was originally home to a 1980s bungalow, it very quickly became clear to the team at ARCO2 that the property was not taking full advantage of its spectacular surroundings, and were delighted at the opportunity to create a family home that better connects with its wonderful location. With panoramic views over the Camel Estuary and to the countryside beyond, both the owner and ARCO2 team felt it was important to open up the living space to truly realise the potential that this home possessed. With a vision to blend the beauty of the outside with the shelter of the inside, work began to infuse Waterhouse with the natural influences that surround the home in a sympathetic design that wouldn’t compromise on energy efficiency. Incorporating a pallet of natural materials, dark stained vertical larch timber cladding with contrasting areas of un-treated horizontal larch adorn the exterior of Waterhouse, keeping the architectural language simple with a nod to the agricultural landscape character. A driveway was created that opened

into a central hub and internal courtyard space, from which all living and sleeping spaces could be accessed with an additional rear private evening terrace, protected on three sides from the prevailing winds. The open-plan living space was designed so that it could be divided as desired with mobile partitions to suit any occasion. So that the owner could fully appreciate an active Cornish lifestyle, an insulated workshop for hobby equipment and a surfboard store with covered access from the dwelling was also included. With stunning south-facing views over the surrounding Camel Estuary which provides a tranquil backdrop to this family home, today Waterhouse blends into its stunning surroundings, complete with a green roof and a charming aesthetic inside and out, composed of low-energy sourced building materials. Benefiting from a lifetime home ethos, the spacious rooms are filled with natural light in a seamless transition from the outside in, with an open-plan living, kitchen and dining area, and generous ceiling heights to maximise the horizon. Waterhouse has completely transformed the lives of its owner, Sally Jones: “The whole project has been a complete success. At all times, through both design and build, the team has been a pleasure to work with and we now have an amazing, future proof house. Highly recommended.” By opening up the building to its beautiful estuary setting and creating seamless transitions between the inside and outside, Waterhouse is a light-filled, spacious, low-energy modern family home that better connects with its location and fulfils the ethos of a lifetime home.

THE RIGHT For Post & Beam, sustainability, carbon offsetting and ensuring a future for our planet’s green spaces, are all paramount to the business ethos.

S

peaking to business founders, Tim Simpson and Tom Jubb, we learn that 90% of the raw material used by Post & Beam is oak, sourced from the sustainably managed forests of northern France. “French commercial oak forests are so well managed and have been for more than 300 years,” says Tom. “In partnership with the forestry management in France, we replant the equivalent of all the trees that we use in our projects.” Timber is a fantastic building material as it stores CO2 for the life of the building. However, says Tom: “We also feel that it is our responsibility to encourage and promote non-commercial rewilding and native woodland creation here in Cornwall. We do it because we recognise the long-lasting effects of re-wilding, and the importance of carbon offsetting in securing a stable, green environment for future generations.” Did you know that Britain was once a wooded isle with over 98% of the land covered in trees, and that now, only 2% of that ancient wild wood survives?

Restoring the Celtic rainforest çLEFT

Post & Beam replant two trees for every one used in their stunning builds

This startling statistic lies at the core of Plant One Cornwall, a registered Community Interest Company solely focused on putting trees in the ground for the benefit of us all. Working with private landowners and the community, as well as partnering with businesses like Post & Beam, Plant One Cornwall aims to restore and revitalise the ever-shrinking temperate rainforest – a habitat found here in the UK that is thought, by many, to be more endangered than its tropical counterparts. Known otherwise as the ‘Celtic rainforest’, this truly special habitat is becoming increasingly rare, their importance lying not only in their ability to act as a ‘carbon sink’, but also in the fact that their lush conditions are perfect for scarce plants, lichens and fungi, as well as an array of unusual animals. Led by Carl Rowlinson and Rai Lewis, Plant One understand that management of new woodland is as, if not more, important than physically planting trees. Tom continues: “Because of the high value of land in the UK, this becomes difficult

to address with private landowners. If a woodland fails, then so does the carbon offset sold with it. Plant One can pinpoint the exact planting location of the trees we purchase,” says Tom, and when you consider that a typical Post & Beam client is indirectly planting approximately 10 to 20 trees via Plant One Cornwall, this partnership is a significant force for good, supporting the rewilding of our countryside and the revitalising of the Celtic rainforest which has, perhaps, never been more important.

Conservation in action

Cherry Trees

Set on the harbour front in the heart of Padstow, at Cherry Trees, you’ll find cake heaven. This small café serves brunch, lunch and homemade cakes and cream teas, making it an ideal place to refuel after a cycle along the Camel Trail. With a menu catering for takeaway as well as eating in, follow the scent of roasting coffee beans and let the team make you a Kiwi style flat-white to go – with a large slice of something delicious!

Pioneering marine conservation in action, at the National Lobster Hatchery, you can get up close to rarely seen lobsters at all stages of their lifecycle. See the innovative Lobster Raise and Release programme first-hand (as seen on TV) and find out all about this most enigmatic of crustaceans from the team of self-confessed ‘lobster nerds’. t Moritz Hotel Cornwall offers visitors a collection of rooms, suites, apartments and villas, all just a short stroll from the ocean. Inspired by the Miami lifestyle and perched between two golden beaches, guests can spend as much time in the water as they please. Alternatively, they can embark on an adventure led by one of the guides and instructors who are kept on the hotel’s speed dial! While the hotel prides itself on its location – surrounded by the north coast’s endless natural playground – it is also a destination for foodies hoping to capitalise on what the team call the ‘culinary triangle’, between the exclusivity of Rock, the postcard-pretty Port Isaac, and the burgeoning gastro hot-spot of Padstow. In short, however you like to relax, St Moritz has you covered. Within the hotel itself, for those days when you just want to enjoy a lazy day close to the convenience of your accommodation, the hotel restaurant, Shorecrest, serves a bounty of seasonal dishes, with ingredients sourced from the abundant natural larder that is Cornwall. Quintessentially British afternoon teas, brimming with sweet and savoury treats and prosecco as standard, add an extra culinary sparkle to the day, while the Seaside Café provides the perfect spot to enjoy a coffee, a stone-baked pizza, or, indeed, a glass of bubbles as you kick back on the Leisure Lawn. The site itself lies within just minutes of world-class, award-winning attractions, sub-tropical gardens, ancient castles, Blue Flag beaches and endless miles of the South West Coast Path. But again, if something a little closer to home is the order of the day, then you’ll be well served by the St Moritz Cowshed Spa, indoor pool, sauna and steam room – offering the optimum balance of relaxation and rejuvenation, with treatments available from a highly trained team of therapists.

With a selection of stunning hotel and self-catering accommodation available to suit every style of holiday, all purposefully designed with stylish spaciousness in mind and just a short stroll from the fringes of the Atlantic, if you’re yet to book your 2022 escape to Cornwall, then why not make St Moritz your next port of call?

COME TO REST Rest and recharge on the north Cornwall coast from a luxury sea-view glamping pod.

N

estled between Watergate Bay and Mawgan Porth, overlooking the beautiful north coast, The Travellers Rest provides a spectacularly modern take on seaside stays, in the form of sea-view glamping pods. With jaw-dropping sea views, each pod offers modern-day luxury whilst keeping you immersed in the natural world, meaning you can wake up every morning to glorious sunrises and sip your favourite tipple in the evening as you watch the sun go down. Designed with comfort and convenience in mind, each pod comes equipped with Wi-Fi, smart TV, fridge, microwave, barbeque, outdoor seating, plus all the little extras that go towards making a holiday base a home. All cleaning products, soaps and shampoos, for example, are eco and animal friendly, and the team only use refillable dispensers, keeping waste to an absolute minimum and cutting down on the use of unnecessary plastics. All four of the pods are pet friendly, and the on-site pub – The Travellers Rest – also welcomes four-legged companions. What’s more, being located just a stone’s throw from the South West Coast Path, the site is perfectly situated for stretching everyone’s

legs. Most of the local beaches are dog friendly too, though it’s definitely worth checking guidelines to see where and when leads need to be worn. In recent times we have all experienced our fair share of challenges, making the need to get away and clear our headspace more important than ever. Whether you’re getting away by yourself or as a family, The Travellers Rest has everything on its doorstep to help you rest and recharge. From coastal walks, to yoga and surf coaching, whatever you have in mind for the perfect getaway, the team can set you on the right path and put you in touch with the right people to ensure you get the most out of your stay in this stunning pocket of coastal Cornwall.

Trebarwith Strand Seascape by Dean Murphy Painting seascapes, waves, landscapes and other figurative pieces in oil, acrylic and water colour, Dean Murphy works out of his gallery – a converted shipping container – at Trebarwith Strand near Tintagel. Well known for his paintings of this location and continually inspired by the beauty of north Cornwall, Dean grew up where he now lives and works, and is a master at capturing the light on the water. Prints are available and commissions welcome.

Being based in Cornwall has certainly influenced the style of the gallery which focuses on contemporary semi-abstract originals, exploring the concept of ‘edges’ and ‘boundaries’ - where land meets sky – a celebration of the lines and patterns of our countryside, and ruggedness of our natural coastline. A truly independent gallery with an obsessive attention to detail, style and quality. Pop in-store for a friendly welcome, or take the virtual gallery tour online from the comfort of your own home and enjoy the monthly exhibitions and new collections. 11 LANADWELL STREET, PADSTOW PL28 8AN 01841 533435 | info@padstowgallery.co.uk www.padstowgallery.co.uk

Rocking Jug by Paul Jackson Paul Jackson’s distinctive work is the result of two interrelated processes; each piece is first thrown on the wheel, before being subtly altered in form, giving each pot an individual character and strength that’s defined by a journey of discovery. This journey continues during decoration, where the pot’s elegance and sense of balance grow directly out of Paul’s concern for harmony between form, colour, and the painted surface. The results are stunning; to see them for yourself and discover more about Paul’s work, be sure to visit the website.

ART

THE ARTIST’S

muse

Jo Downs reveals her long and inspirational relationship with Padstow and the Camel Estuary.

J

o Downs, the renowned fused-glass artist, tells us: “Padstow and its beautiful estuary area have always been a real inspiration to me. When I first came to Cornwall, over 20 years ago now, honestly, the white sand, the blue water and the bustle of the harbour seemed utterly idyllic to me in that classic English coastal way. I still feel the thrill on days when I bring work from the studio down to my gallery here – it’s like a little holiday, even for a few hours!” As one of Cornwall’s best loved and most high-profile artists, Jo Downs can lay claim to a powerful connection to the whole of Cornwall, but Padstow holds a special place in the story of her career.

“Padstow is the place where I opened my very first gallery in 2005,” she explains. “It was a really pivotal moment in my career – it was so exciting and so terrifying! – but I felt right away that Padstow was the perfect place for my work. People come here to appreciate the light, and the colour in the landscape, and the unique beauty of Cornwall, and that’s what my work is all about.” The Camel Estuary and its surrounding bays and beaches have also inspired dedicated collections of Jo’s work over the years. Her longstanding and famously colourful Beach collection, which launched at Padstow all those years ago, drew

inspiration from the dazzling seaside colours of the little boats and beach umbrellas and bunting that dot the harbour and shoreline with colour. More recently, Jo’s Daymer Bay collection, inspired by the bright blues and yellows of a hot summer on the sand, have proved incredibly popular with seasonal visitors and locals alike. “I think people who love this area, whether they live here or come down on holiday, want something special to take home with them that declares their love for the place. All of us have a special place in Cornwall that we really feel is ‘ours’, don’t we? So, artwork connected to that place can be a real joy for people, and you know, there should always be more joy!” Jo’s gallery has also hosted a number of collections that are exclusive to Padstow, and not available in other galleries. “Right now, Padstow is the one and only venue for the new Hawkers Cove collection. Hawkers is the prettiest little cove imaginable, just north of Padstow, with soft dune grass and the pink of crushed seashells running all through the sand there, and this collection reflects that in its colours and textures. It’s part of our Artisan range of pieces that are designed and made entirely by members of my lovely glass fusing team. Artisan allows them to go wild with their creativity. Each work is individually designed, so you never know what will be on show.”

Another rich seam of creativity for Jo in and around Padstow is the opportunity for private commissions, to design bespoke pieces for some of the spectacular sea view homes that surround the Camel Estuary. Her highly coveted Shoaling Fish wall installations were first inspired by a huge commission for an architect designed home in Padstow. “That was the perfect commission,” says Jo. “A stunning space and absolute free reign to create whatever I wanted. The final design perfectly referenced the sea, the wild nature of Cornwall and the fishing scene associated with Padstow. It was another key design for me, a really meaningful one in my career. I was very proud of it.” Her Shoaling Fish collections continue to be favourites at the gallery, and this year they are even being created in unique Artisan colourways, “for a whole rainbow of new choices”, adds Jo. Her most recent commission is for one of her statement Fish Chandeliers, created for Perfect Stay’s Roscarrock House in Porthcothan. “Chandeliers are amongst the most complex works I make,” she says. “They take weeks of cutting, firing, refiring, polishing and assembling, but when all that work comes together and the client gets to see it in situ, that’s always a magic moment for me.”

THE FABRIC

of time

Estuary Textiles is a small shop in Wadebridge stocking a wide range of materials and fabrics from across the decades and around the world.

I

nside this textile emporium you will find a collection of antique quilts, including those stitched in America during the Depression Era from feedsack cottons, as well as those made closer to home by Victorian ladies a century and a half ago, from silk and velvet. There is an extensive range of 19th century French home-loomed linen sheets and nightshirts, too; the sheets are of a beautiful quality and wonderful to work with. The nightshirts, meanwhile, make superb frocks – good to know with summer just around the corner! Materials collected from around the world add a global influence to the Wadebridge shop. These are transformed into cushions and lampshades by a member of the team based in Padstow. Lampshades can be made from Kuba cloth which is sourced from the Congo – woven from raffia, dyed with mud pigments and decoratively stitched with cowries, making for a wonderful, textural addition to any home. Cushions, meanwhile, have been made with traditionally woven Kutnu silk from Turkey, edged in pleated fabric from the Hill Tribes of Northern Vietnam. As well as all of this you’ll find brightly coloured furnishing materials featuring

striking compositions from the post-war women designers who came to prominence in the Festival of Britain era, plus beautiful patterns by artists who were commissioned to design fabrics in the early 1960s. More contemporary designs, meanwhile, are chosen for the quality of both fabric and illustrative style. Estuary Textiles welcomes a range of customers as wide as the items it stocks, from young people just learning to sew, to fashion and textile students from local colleges, to keen stitchers and professional makers and artists. For those who want to create their own items, Estuary offers a custom cutting service, minimising waste and expense by selling cuts of material that are precisely the size and shape you require. There is also an extensive selection of threads and remnants for textile art, and the team will happily work with you to curate the selection that meets both your needs and your budget. Whatever your project, you are bound to find something to suit at Estuary Textiles, so be sure to pop in and see what’s in store!

magine a beautiful blue ocean, waves gently breaking on one end of a golden sandy beach and building to sweeping rollers at the other. It’s a bright spring morning and you’re faced with a dilemma – to swim, to surf or to paddleboard? The choices seem endless. Whichever direction you decide to go they’ll all be better than the inertia that has marked our lives during the recent Covid lockdowns. The benefits of cold-water immersion have been demonstrated to help with mental and physical health – improved sleep, mindfulness, confidence, the reduction of stress response, blood circulation and rheumatism. However, unless you’re a superhero, you’ll need the correct attire or kit to get the full benefits from any of these activities. Be it a simple pair of swimming shorts and rash vest, through to the most advanced fibreglass surfboard and everything else in-between. This is where MAD Water Sports can help. The team here know their foils from their foamies, and it would be odd if they didn’t, having been surfing and swimming off the north Cornwall coast for the past 20 years, along with running a successful outdoor activity centre. Ironically it was the onset of the pandemic that galvanised them into creating a retail outlet. They had to act quickly as they saw the take-up of their instructor-led courses drop off a cliff as new rules came into place. So, in 2020 a new business began trading, tentatively at first but as we emerged from the pandemic, the pace is picking up. At their completely refurbished unit just outside Wadebridge you enter a spacious area replete with a new mezzanine level; decked

out with a wide range of sustainable top-quality surfboards, paddleboards, bodyboards and a full range of paddles. There are also hydrofoils, wings, and foil boards, along with windsurfers, available to view and purchase in the shop. On the lower floor there are heaps of useful accessories, including quality wetsuits from several world-renowned manufacturers, change robes and dry bags. Very consciously they have managed to create a unique shopping experience, where the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. Help and grounded advice is always on hand but not to the point where you will feel pressured. Besides selling an extensive range of products they are also aware of the provenance of these items. They strive to ensure that they are sourced and supplied from companies who are keen to reduce plastic in their packaging, develop articles manufactured to ensure a long lifespan and, by monitoring all processes, reduce their carbon footprint. So, whether you just want to hit the sea for the occasional swim or to take it to the next level, we suggest you head to MAD Water Sports to tap into a wealth of knowledge and ensure you purchase the correct kit for your waterborne adventure. You won’t be disappointed.

FOODIE HOME |

ALL THINGS

food

At the heart of north Cornwall’s thriving foodie scene is a name that we have all come to know and love: Rick Stein.

DID YOU KNOW? Stay with Stein’s Stein’s offer visitors luxury accommodation throughout the Padstow area, all with beautiful, coastal inspired interiors courtesy of Jill Stein. From hotel rooms, to selfcatered properties, to cosy shepherd’s huts, a foodie break is made complete when you stay with Stein’s.

T

ucked away in the very heart of Padstow, only a short stroll from its working fishing harbour, St Petroc’s Bistro is best described as an informal bistro that takes great French cooking seriously. The atmosphere here is relaxed, a calm haven from the hustle and bustle of the summer season, and with a secret courtyard garden for al fresco feasts, plus a private dining room, it delivers the very best ingredients from Cornwall’s natural larder, fusing them with the simple flare of Parisian bistro-style cooking. Once you’ve finished your choice from the menu, Ruby’s Cocktail Bar – located just next door – provides a stylish and cosy space in which to wash it all down, with a menu replete with tempting cocktails, local beers and, of course, excellent wines. After an evening of such epicurean debauchery, you could hardly be expected to drive back to your stay outside of Padstow, so why not make a night of it in one of the unique, characterful rooms above the bistro? With low wooden beams, winding stairs and fireplaces, the ten rooms upstairs provide the ultimate sanctuaries in which to enjoy your coastal escape. Some even have views of the estuary, and with breakfast provided as a matter of course – be it downstairs choosing from the full menu, or a continental breakfast delivered to your room (depending on how much time you spent in Ruby’s the night before!) – you can start the morning the

right way, before embarking on your day’s coastal adventure. All rooms benefit from beautiful coastal interiors, courtesy of Jill Stein, and guests have the option of private parking as well as access to electric vehicle charging points. Some rooms are even dog friendly, and with a snug bar downstairs that welcomes four-legged companions, you needn’t leave your furriest of friends behind. If, after a taste of Rick’s bistro menu, you find yourself wanting to hone your own culinary skills, then the Rick Stein Cookery School gives visitors the chance to learn some of the master chef’s signature dishes. A huge range of courses are on offer, from one-dish workshops, mornings or evenings, to full and even four-day courses, providing you with new culinary skills with which to wow your guests. Alternatively, you may simply wish to sample more of what Stein’s has to offer. If so, you’re in the right place. The Stein’s presence in Cornwall began in Padstow, on the quayside, transforming a once-popular nightclub into an even-more popular restaurant – perhaps the ‘mecca’ for foodies travelling to north Cornwall. The Seafood Restaurant, Rick and Jill's flagship establishment, serves classic seafood that celebrates Cornwall’s produce alongside an excellent curation of wines. With a terrace that beckons guests to sit and stay awhile, soaking up the summer sun whilst gazing across the estuary, it is from the sturdy base

of The Seafood Restaurant that the Stein’s brand has continued to grow. Its evolution includes the Seafood Bar and Fishmongers, also in Padstow, a casual seafood bar where guests can tuck into the best seafood that Cornwall has to offer. Alternatively, you can take your pick from the well-stocked fish counter, advised by the friendly, knowledgeable fishmongers, perfect for budding chefs hoping to make the most of their self-catered stay. In fact, there is a multitude of eateries, big and small, including Rick Stein’s Café, just two minutes from Padstow’s harbour and open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. With Stein's Gift Shop next door, the café provides diners with the added indulgence of retail therapy, choosing from a carefully curated range of souvenirs, kitchenware, and Cornish inspired products by Jill Stein. Also in Padstow, Stein’s Coffee Shop delivers speciality roasted coffee from Cornish brand, Origin, alongside fresh sandwiches, bagels, sweet treats and luxury soft-serve ice cream. It would be remiss of us not to also mention Stein’s Fish & Chips – perhaps second only to The Seafood Restaurant in terms of iconic destinations. Indeed, what better way to satiate that sea-air appetite after a day spent exploring the Camel Trail, than with a box of Stein’s fish and chips as you sit and admire the sunset? An informal restaurant and takeaway serving locally sourced fish,

as well as oysters, scallops, fish burgers and even curries, a treat for the whole family awaits. You’ll find a similar offering, too, over at Rick Stein Fistral, which overlooks the waves of Newquay’s popular surfing beach, with plenty of space inside and out to enjoy the views, perhaps with a cocktail or two. In the rural village of St Merryn, The Cornish Arms is a must-visit. A traditional Cornish pub serving seasonal favourites, alongside the finest ales from St Austell Brewery, the pub boasts a large beer garden for soaking up the sunshine, offering guests fresh pizzas all summer from the outdoor pizza oven, with the added benefit of accommodation in the form of luxury shepherd’s huts, which are hidden away in the grounds. To put it simply, the food scene of the north coast is excellent, perhaps no more so than in Padstow, and with Rick Stein as a headline act offering culinary experiences of every kind imaginable, including luxury accommodation in which to rest after a heady day of indulgence, it’s easy to see why foodies continue to make it their holiday destination of choice.

A TRUE

SPIRIT

Cornish Rock Gin’s ever-growing collection of carefully crafted gins and rums offer a true taste of Cornwall.

A

stroll across Rock beach with their four-legged companion was where Angie and George had the vision for Cornish Rock Gin. Their idea was having a small distillery, but little did they know that from the outset there would be a huge demand for this Cornish spirit. Made from the most natural products, many of which are found here in the Duchy, and Cornish spring water, the gins are all sugar free and maintain a classic dry taste with subtle flavours and undertones. The Rock Distillery set out to produce a gin that was clean and pure and now make eight fabulous gins all made with the freshest and best botanicals possible. After much research a new bottle has been designed to make the presentation of the gin even more of an event. The bottles even match the exotic Rock Gin glasses which are the ideal way to enjoy a Rock Gin perfect serve. For the rums, the sugar cane base comes from the Caribbean, but many of the other ingredients are sourced as close to the Duchy as possible. The base is re-distilled in Cornwall with the addition of some exciting flavours. There are now eight fantastic Cornish Rums, again made from the purest ingredients, all with a smooth taste and some really amazing

flavours such as fresh coconut, vanilla, mango and passion fruit, English cherries and even Cornish saffron. Angie and George are passionate about their products and love to spread the word, with tempting taster shots. “We try to get out there to as many people as possible. So, as well as being an online retailer, we attend many markets and events so that people can come and taste our products at their leisure. Here in Cornwall, you will find us at Bude Market every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. We are in Tintagel (next to the Old Post Office) every Tuesday and Saturday. You can find us at Falmouth Market on the Moor every Saturday,” explains Angie. “We also have a small retail and tasting space in Port Isaac, plus we are at Port Isaac market every first Sunday of the month. If you can’t get to any of those locations then we also have a small retail shop and tasting station down in the Allen Valley just off the A39.”

RAISING THE

bar

A boutique gin emporium bringing quality and taste to your glass, from Cornwall and beyond.

T

he Little Gin Shack in Wadebridge is a veritable Aladdin’s cave of gin! The realisation of owner Neil Roberts’ dream of running his own gin shop and bar has survived three lockdowns and continues to evolve, going from strength to strength. A move to a high street position and a major refit has allowed for more seating, with space to browse and sample the vast array of gins on offer. Committed to supporting small, local distilleries you’ll find gins from virtually every distiller in Cornwall, complemented by some of Neil's favourite gins from around the world. As something of a connoisseur, having worked for a major licensing wholesaler for over a decade, Neil and his team are always on hand to help customers navigate the vast array of gins on offer, sharing their passion for the spirit. With a service that sets it apart from others, you’ll never buy ‘blind’ from the Little Gin Shack, as there are tiny tastings on offer to ensure that you leave with a gin for

the perfect serve. Taste is such a personal choice and with such a wide variety of gins on offer, all unique in their use of botanicals, it’s important that your tipple is something that will really excite your tastebuds. The gins are selected based on two simple philosophies: either Neil, or store managers Victoria and Tony, have to love the gin, and the bottle has to appeal to the purchaser. The two go hand in hand as there’s nothing worse than finding you have selected a poor gin in a fancy bottle! The Little Gin Shack’s approach to selling gin is unique in that it doesn’t have a ‘gin menu’ as such; the team prefer to establish the type of gin you like, be that traditional, dry, fruity or spicy. “We will then offer you a taster (with an appropriate mixer, of course) and once you’re happy, serve your choice perfectly, in a proper glass, and with the correct garnish,” explains Neil. “We apply the same philosophy to the

Cornish rum, vodka, brandy, liqueurs, beers and ciders that we stock too,” he continues. This attention to detail has not gone unnoticed as the Little Gin Shack was recently included in the top 10 Independent Shops review conducted by Reach, as well as receiving an award conducted by mystery shoppers and based on TripAdvisor reviews. A full bar service is now available in the new town centre location, which has an outside space in which to enjoy a lunchtime tipple or delicious sundowner. This is also the perfect spot to enjoy an aperitif before dining at one of Wadebridge’s superb restaurants. And, if you have something special to celebrate, why not book in to one of the Little Gin Shack’s bespoke tasting evenings for a special night of gins, matched with food, in the company of friends and guided by Neil’s incredible knowledge. If you aren’t able to visit in person, don’t despair as you can order both gins and other spirits online for delivery to your door. Each bottle is accompanied by tasting notes and advice on the perfect serve, so all you have to do is find your favourite glass, mix and enjoy!

Safeguarding OUR SEAS

A lifechanging competition launched early this year, to bring the crucial message of marine conservation to the heart of secondary schools nationwide.

D

ABOVE ì On the road to becoming ocean influencers RIGHT è Education through experience BELOW î Entering the breathtaking marine environment

ive Project Cornwall believe it is every young person’s right to experience the ocean. They also believe that educating our children about the wonders of the planet’s marine environment and the crucial part it plays in our existence has never been more important. How else are we to safeguard the future of our seas? Having kicked off in January this year, Dive Project Cornwall has now ‘gone live’ on its ambitious project to educate hundreds of thousands of young people, by delivering an education programme directly into schools across the UK, in partnership with the Marine Conservation Society. The mission is simple: to raise awareness of the importance of the Earth’s marine environment, and the vital role it plays in our very own existence. At the heart of the project is a nationwide competition open to all secondary schools, for 400 lucky teenagers to win the experience of a lifetime: a six-day, life-changing trip to Cornwall, where they will learn to scuba dive, enjoy outdoor adventures, take up beach-related activities, and attend presentations from leading marine industry experts. A truly immersive experience, the winning teens will be taken from classroom to shoreline and beyond; from the on-site training pool, to taking their first steps to discovering the wonders of life beneath the waves, igniting their imaginations along the way and sparking a desire to join the ocean conservation movement. Many of these children will never have had the opportunity to experience the ocean close at hand. They’ll leave this residential course, delivered in the breathtaking environment of Porthkerris, on the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall, as PADI qualified Open Water Divers, ready to spread the word as ocean influencers.
