Dive Project Cornwall launches for 2024 In 2023, Dive Project Cornwall taught over 350 young people to dive here in the Duchy. It was an experience that changed the lives of many, and just as importantly, raised awareness of the importance of our oceans, encouraging the next generation of Ocean Influencers to go out into the world and enact the positive change that’s needed in order to safeguard the future of the marine environment. As well as learning to dive, the youngsters were educated about the importance of the ocean with activities led by Marine

Conservation Society, activities that also taught them valuable life skills for use in their everyday lives. Now, as Dive Project Cornwall looks to embark on an even bigger and more impactful 2024, it needs your support. Ten years of riding the wave Waves Gallery, Porthleven, celebrates its tenth anniversary this year! After opening in Easter 2013 the gallery has adapted, grown and thrived – through the tough times of Covid through to successfully surfing the current unsteady economic climate. One year into the endeavour, Mike Lacey – the gallery’s founder – managed to capture the most iconic photo that has become the hallmark of his talent. ‘The Cornish Heart’, a one in a million shot, was not only Mike’s last photo of

the day, but was also his last photo taken in the sea before his eldest daughter was born. As Mike says, “There is something really special about The Cornish Heart photo I took the day before my daughter, Coral, was born. It has become quite the most dramatic image in the gallery,” leading to the creation, with his wife Lisa, of the children’s story book – Coral & the Cornish Heart. ’m not one for resolutions. I find that they’re too quick to be decided upon and all too easily broken. This year, I’m going to opt for some long-term goal setting instead, taking time to really think about what I want to achieve in terms of health and happiness, and adopting some sustainable changes that will see me through the year and beyond. I’ve recently become interested in breathwork and its associated benefits, so I’m going to start there. Having been tutored at a recent workshop by breathwork coach Anthony Mullaly (anthonymulllay. com), I was amazed by how, with just a little time spent on practising correct breathing techniques, these could have such dramatic benefits. Nose breathing is something that we should all be doing and when combined with breath holding has myriad benefits. Breathing through the mouth is something our ancestors would only have done in times of stress, when the fight-or-flight response was activated and they were in need of greater volumes of air. They would revert to nose breathing as soon as the stressor was gone, however in modern times we have lost that ability, the reversion to nose breathing is no longer inherent, and this affects stress levels and subsequently our mental health. hotels will be running workshops next year combining breathwork and cold-water immersion and I can highly recommend this as a way to let go of any stress and anxieties that you might be holding on to. Who would have thought that simply by changing the way we breathe we can achieve a freedom of thought and nourishment of the body? While practising breathwork, some of which is done seated on the floor, I quickly realised that my ageing scatter cushions just weren’t going to cut it! In some ways, breathwork is akin to meditation and so I went on the hunt for a cushion that would help position my body correctly. Sati’s (satidesign.com) ethical meditation cushions are thoughtfully designed in Cornwall and hand made in a small village just outside Jaipur in India. Using only natural dyes and traditional block printing techniques, these firm cushions elevate your hips to the correct angle, dropping your knees below your thighs, allowing a good spine position and excellent overall posture while you sit. I have also decided that it isn’t just my mind that deserves some attention over the coming year, how I nourish my body also needs some work. With the excesses of the festive period behind us, many of us will turn to dry January and embark on various diets to try and banish those extra pounds. Going ‘coldturkey’ and suddenly depriving our bodies is great for short term gains, but should we be looking at longer term solutions where the choices we make can be sustained throughout the year? With so much in the news recently about rising infections from flu, Covid and a nasty strain of Step A, I’ve looked to a Cornish product that is bursting with vitamin C, made from a tiny orange berry grown on the Roseland. day. If you’re not a fan, like I am, try flavouring it with cucumber, mint or the fruit of your choice. On cold days, try it hot with a slice of lemon; it’s both cleansing and warm and counts towards your daily quota. That’s daytime hydration sorted, but what about when it comes to going out? I think that goals are better achieved when they taste good and so opting from a non-alcoholic drink that is a treat in itself will make sure you don’t feel like you’re missing out. Joe Thomson, Co-owner and Head Brewer at the Firebrand Brewing Company (firebrandbrewing.co.uk) says that he became interested in developing an alcoholfree beer through a personal desire to live a healthier lifestyle. “I wanted to cut down on alcohol without giving up beer,” he says. “I tried many different styles of alcohol-free beer but found them watery, thin and lacking flavour. They were often full of lactose to add depth too. So, I decided to brew one that provides everything I like, the first

this magical berry while trekking to Everest base camp with his friend Kiran. Suffering the effects of altitude sickness, they were given a bright orange drink by a sherpa, and the effects were amazing. Made from sea buckthorn, Seth discovered that the plant could be found growing wild in Cornwall and so began cultivating his own crop, forming the Cornish Seaberry Co (cornishseaberry.co.uk). ith the days drawing out and the sun beginning to shine through our windows earlier each morning, it seems that spring is almost upon us. It’s a season of promise, awakening and new life, enlivening us and rekindling our adventurous spirit. It’s a time for getting outdoors once again, and for those seeking to escape the dreary humdrum of their daily lives away from the Duchy, to break the ice of hibernation and crash into coastal Cornwall for a long-awaited holiday. Beautiful at all times of the year, Cornwall is especially stunning as nature dips her brush into the paint pot and begins layering her canvas with the colourful palette of spring, which makes it a popular time for those who relish time spent outdoors. With this in mind, we thought we’d explore some of the many options out there for holiday makers hoping to make the most of Cornwall in the season of new life, from luxury, surroundedby-nature lodges and options for those hoping to invest in their future family holidays, to camping and glamping escapes that place but a layer of canvas between you and the enigmatic beauty of Cornwall. We’ll begin with the latter, and where better to start than the Yurt Village at The Park, Cornwall (theparkcornwall.com)? In actual fact, accommodation at The Park ranges widely, from luxury lodges and cottages, to park cabins. But it’s really the resort’s Yurt Village that has stolen our attention this month. For more than 2,000 years, Mongolian shepherds have made yurts their homes. Traditionally made from a round wooden frame with stretched-canvas rooves, each yurt at The Park comes with a touch more luxury than the traditional shelters that inspired them, with underfloor heating, doubleglazed windows and woodburners making them cosy all year round, even on those chillier spring evenings. Within easy reach of Mawgan Porth beach – and of course, benefitting from all the facilities The Park Cornwall has to offer – if it’s a glamping retreat you’re looking for, you’re unlikely to be disappointed. Another favourite of ours that offers an array of accommodation is Pentewan Sands (pentewan.co.uk). Nestling on a half-mile stretch of privately owned beach in the sheltered waters of Mevagissey Bay, it’s the ideal location for families embarking on the traditional Cornish bucket-and-spade escape. It also welcomes guests wishing to stay in all kinds of ways, be it in their own motor home, caravan or tent, or in one of the resort’s on-site holiday homes. Bedecked with everything you need for the perfect holiday, from fully equipped kitchens, to bedrooms with all of the bed linen supplied, these lodges provide the ultimate comfort for a break on the fringes of the coast, with many offering views over the Atlantic breakers. With the on-site Seahorse Restaurant offering in-house dining and takeaway meals, as well as tennis courts, indoor swimming pools, bicycle hire and even an amusement arcade, there’s lots to keep families busy at Pentewan. Facilities also abound at Wooda (wooda. co.uk), a five-star holiday park near Bude. Placing families in prime position to make the most of woodland walks, nature trails and cycle paths, as well as tractor rides and the chance to meet the farm’s animals, Wooda continues to be made home from home by families who have been visiting for generations. The site also boasts a tennis court, a fitness suite, indoor archery, a pitch and putt, badminton, a fishing pond, pottery workshops and much more, but what really sets it apart is the attention to comfort and luxury that defines its accommodation. Wooda, like Pentewan, offers both touring and camping pitches for those bringing their own shelters with them, however it also has a variety of luxury holiday homes sleeping up to six, all with sea views, as well as three self-catering holiday cottages (two on site, with one in the heart of Bude). Tucked into the hillside with sweeping coastal views across Bude on Cornwall’s north coast, Gwelva Hills offers the perfect destination for a romantic break for two, as much as it does for family holidays and get-togethers with friends. Stylishly designed with soft hues, the interiors of these spacious lodges feature open-plan living spaces, log burners and sink-into sofas to make time spent together as relaxing as possible. Barbeques and bottles of bubbles are all but obligatory thanks to the outside decking areas, while the bedrooms provide sumptuous sanctuaries in which to rest up before the next day’s adventure. For those in search of something a little more secluded, or for a real point of difference compared to the wider market of available stays, Unique hideaways (uniquehideaways. com), for want of a better phrase, offers exactly what it says on the tin. Mistery 2 is a fine example, a houseboat hidden along the banks of the river Kennall, just over four miles from Falmouth. Sleeping four, this beautiful barge is permanently docked at her own quay, which itself is on the water’s edge of a two-acre holiday sanctuary. You’ll find tucked-away spots in which to read a book, easy access to the river for paddleboarding, and a firepit around which to gather and enjoy a hot chocolate as you gaze up and pick out the stars of the night sky. Inside, the interiors are as luxurious as they are nautical, with port windows allowing the sunshine to stream in, a well-equipped kitchen with surfaces carefully crafted from recycled Falmouth dock pilings, and the outside teak decking having been transferred from older ships. Another of Unique hideaways’ show-stoppers is The Bird Box, described on the website as a ‘cabin in Cornwall with an outdoor bath’. Inviting you to reawaken your connection with nature, this Scandi-chic, rustic cabin in a

secluded pocket of countryside near Liskeard is a true example of glamping. It allows daydreamers to do just that, with a sumptuous freestanding tub inviting al fresco, bubbleheavy soaks, and a hammock suspended idly in a small spinney of trees. Add to this a back-tobasics, warmed-by-wood-fire interior that has everything you need to relax, and all that’s left to do is enjoy the company of just the two of you. Perhaps what epitomises the modern ‘glamping’ retreat the most, however, is the humble shepherd’s hut. Anybody who has stayed in one of these will know how amazing it is what creative minds can do with such a small space, and Unique hideaways’ retreat, Shepherd’s Rest, is no exception. Located less than four miles north of Fowey, this romantic, beautifully crafted hideaway lies in the heart of the countryside, with a lakeside barbeque hut for intimate sunset feasts. Craftsmanship and attention to detail are evident in every wooden joint, from the reclaimed floorboards, to the handmade cabinetry and bed frame, to the window frames that provide calming views out over the decking, the lakes, and the Cornish countryside beyond. At Shepherd’s Rest, it’s easy to unplug and switch off from the bustle of modern life. And whilst, from the outside, it feels very much like a ‘back to basics’ retreat, the simple façade belies a luxurious interior, including a lavish shower room, sumptuous king-sized bed and a welcoming woodburner. Oh, and there’s a matching shepherd’s hut for your dog just next door! What all of the aforementioned stays have in common is closeness to nature, and in fact they are but a small sample of the camping, glamping and luxury lodge retreats that Cornwall has to offer. Particularly in recent years, more and more holidaymakers in the UK have been looking to Cornish soil when it comes to booking their breaks, and for many, this has left a lasting longing to return time and time again. This, in turn, has sparked an upward trend of visitors deciding to invest in their own little slice of Cornish paradise, from cottage boltholes by the sea, to luxurious lodges on resorts with all of the amenities required for the

t’s no secret that our beautiful Duchy draws visitors from far and wide for the rich local history and startlingly beautiful scenery that frames our corner of the country, but in recent years a new focus has come to the fore to pique our interest. While famed for traditional Cornish pasties and cream teas, still very much enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, Cornwall’s abundance of fresh, good quality ingredients, combined with an ever-growing collection of talented chefs and a shared passion for seasonal food, has meant a glinting reputation for fine dining at its very best has settled over the county, beckoning foodies from far and wide. The dishes prepared at Outlaw’s New Road reflect the location and time of the ingredients gathered, even to the day; we consider the subtle changes in produce and raw components as each season evolves. Our aim is to elevate seafood.” With the option of an a la carte lunch, celebrating Nathan’s most iconic dishes from the last 20 years, or his signature seafood tasting menu for dinner, which elevates the seafood dining experience to whole new heights, Outlaw’s New Road is nothing short of a haven for any sea-foodie. Relatively new to the scene, but nevertheless packing a punch with a Muddy Stilettos Best Restaurant Award for 2022 tucked under its belt only a few months after opening, The Mulberry in Falmouth (themulberryfalmouth.co.uk) has quickly found a firm foothold, fusing fine dining with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere to put you at ease as you sample the very best of local flavours. With chefs Harry Cartwright and Jay Brady at the helm, each bringing their own unique skills and perspectives to the plate, local, seasonal and sustainable produce is at the core of everything they do, using local suppliers wherever they can, and even foraging a lot of their ingredients themselves. Much like Ugly Butterfly, The Mulberry aims to produce as little food waste as possible, with a determination to use every part of an animal, fruit or vegetable, ordering in whole cuts of meat from butchers like Philip Warrens. While the premium cuts are used in the pork tenderloin dish, offcuts will help create the delicious quail scotch

eggs currently on the menu; anything left from the lamb saddle can be made into lamb bacon or salt lamb; and remnants of fruits and vegetables can be used in gels, sorbets and stocks. This level of attention to detail shows in the presentation and flavour of every dish on the menu, and paired with an extensive wine list and a collection of locally sourced spirits and fresh, seasonal cocktails, a visit to The Mulberry is sure to satisfy. Finding home in The Headland Hotel, perched fifty feet up on Newquay’s Towan Headland with a view of Fistral Bay’s pounding surf and tantalising sunsets through the twelvefoot windows that stretch the length of the restaurant, is Restaurant RenMor (renmor. co.uk). Serving breakfast, afternoon tea and supper, dishes here are unfussy and luxurious, with ever-changing specials inspired by the pick of the produce delivered to the kitchen every morning. ell, what a year we have had in the restaurants. It’s been a brilliant season and we’ve been lucky to have had so many visitors to Cornwall, enjoying all we have to offer in this great county with all our fine restaurants, cafes, tea rooms, produce, beaches, natural beauty, and people. Also, the summer was long and hot and that contributed to a fantastic long season of holidaymakers continuing to come long after the school holidays had ended. Despite the difficulties faced by businesses around Cornwall and the UK, there has been a definite increase in the popularity of the Cornish ‘staycation’. Cornwall relies on the tourist trade, and it’s been great to see that people are able to enjoy our beautiful county

FOODIE now without all the restrictions we have had over the last few years. We are all hoping that Cornwall has put itself firmly in the calendar for many more to come and enjoy. It was very uncertain times for hospitality during the pandemic and our trade was by far the hardest hit; it seemed like we would never be able to open normally. The stopstart lifting of restrictions was really difficult for all of us, along with not knowing what the next rules would be or how they might affect our restaurants and cafes. After all that, we learned to roll with the punches; we all became more resilient and found that we could adapt to whatever was going to be thrown at us next. Strangely, that seems like a long time ago now. The next challenge for hospitality was the lack of staff wanting to work in our sector after Brexit. We were all suddenly left with a huge hole in our restaurant rotas, which meant lot of places had to reduce their hours and miss out on a lot of the summer business. We’ve seen a huge rise in food prices that has affected all our food costs; fish prices doubled overnight; farmed products costs increased, and the costs have been passed onto the restauranteurs. The war in Ukraine saw the worlds grain prices rise steeply and there is now a supposed egg shortage (created by supermarkets) and these are the basic ingredients to so many dishes that we cook every day! Prices of European wine and ingredients have all gone through the roof due to Brexit, and electricity prices for some of us in our sector are going up by a terrifying 600%. To combat these challenges, restaurants have had to slim down their offering because of the need to keep costs down, and manage the lack of labour. It has been hard times, but we hope that customers can be a bit more understanding that we are all trying our best to give them the best meal and service that we possibly can.

We have seen many changes to Kota this year with the new art, crockery, and tasting menus, and while Kota will be closed for a small refurbishment, we will returning with a fresh, early spring menu where we will be looking to focus more on our foraging, pickling, ageing, and fermenting. We are already getting excited for a small break and then getting back with an exciting new menu. Kota Kai has been open since 2011 and it has been so much fun having the restaurant in its current form, and now we’re looking at freshening up the concept for Kai too with a new menu to start our spring season. As always, the Porthleven Food Festival is a firm favourite in the calendar year, and we can’t wait to get involved for 2023. Wine and beer nights with a matching tasting menu in Kota Kai will feature all weekend, with Kota championing a seafood menu with a wine and champagne bar during the day time. It really is something to look forward too. Our New Years’ resolution this year is to bring our waste down even further to the very bear minimum. We try our best every day, but we’re resolute to try even harder to encourage our suppliers to do more to reduce the impact on our environment. We hope more can come and join us to make a difference. Here’s to 2023!

hat began life as an idea dreamed up on a dog walk across Rock beach, saw company founders George and Angie set up Cornish Rock Gin with a single classic gin. Fast forward some five years and Cornish Rock Gin is proud to start the 2023 season with eight wonderful gins, eleven very special rums and more to come later this year. As ever, all of their gins remain sugar free and contain the best and freshest natural ingredients they can source. The rums are very much designed for those with a sweeter tooth and make the most delicious instant cocktails.

In order to continue to keep producing such fabulous products, Cornish Rock Gin is moving to new, much larger premises in Wadebridge. Here, this will not only give them the space and capacity to produce and bottle more of their gins and rums, it will also allow them to have a trade counter plus a retail shop on site, so visitors can come and try their wide selection of tasty gins and rums. Not ones to stand still in terms of pushing the business forward, George and Angie will also be opening a Cornish Rock Gin shop on Fore Street, Tintagel. where you can sample the fabulous selection of gin and rum at a full tasting station, with very knowledgeable staff on hand who can help you find that special tipple. You’ll also find them at the Old Post Office, Tintagel, on a Tuesday and Saturday, so whichever side of the street you’re on, you cannot miss them! However, George and Angie will not be forsaking Bude, where their retail adventure started. The Cornish Rock Gin range will be available every Friday at the Farmers Market and every Wednesday and Saturday at the artisan market opposite the tennis courts. Watch this space, as a shop will be opening in Bude later in the season so gin and rum lovers will be able to visit every day. One of the latest rums to join the fold is Cornish Perfect Plum. This could be used in a myriad of cocktails and, as the name suggests, it is just perfect on its own. George and Angie suggest serving it simply in a warmed brandy bowl – sit back, sip and enjoy! Another new rum is the Cornish Cinnamon Rock; a spicy rum lover’s dream that's fantastic with either ginger ale or cola, the choice is yours. Now let’s take a look at some of rums that are just perfect for making cocktails. Cornish Tropics Mango and Passionfruit makes an instant porn star martini, simple add a fresh squeeze of passionfruit and top up with either Champagne or prosecco. Use Cornish Coconut Paradise for a really tasty and refreshing cocktail. Pop some ice into a rum tumbler, add a shot of Coconut Paradise and top up with pineapple juice. This Caribbean-inspired mix of coconut with pineapple is to die for! Another perfect cocktail idea, if you’re in need of an instant margarita, is to salt the rim of a cocktail glass, put in a shot of Cornish Devine Lime with Salted Caramel and top up with Fever Tree Mexican Lime Soda. A sip of this will transport you to South-American heaven!

or those who love Cornwall, it will come as little surprise that it provides endless inspiration for creatives across the entire spectrum of disciplines. Artists are drawn here not only for its muchcelebrated light, but also its ability to instil that calm feeling of reflection that enables those with creative proclivities to find their state of flow. At Cornwall Living we are fortunate enough to see, learn and write about Cornish art in all its diversity, and it never ceases to amaze us just how fertile the ground is here for creative innovation. Cornwall based artists continue to push the envelope, instilling the pressing themes of the world into their work and showing us that art is not only an identifier of time and of the world’s most troubling issues, but also provocative of its audience. It sparks conversation, it inspires thought, and in doing so it plays no small part in enacting change.

Of course, there is also the element of beauty to be found in Cornish art, and sometimes it is enough to find resonance with a piece of work simply because it catches your eye. They do say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and it is our hope in this issue that we have showcased a fair representation of Cornish art so that you, our reader, might behold something you love. In fact, if you have been staring at a blank piece of wall for some time and wondering what to do with it, it’s fair to say that this issue is a great place to begin your search for its occupant. Not only do we have our dedicated Arts supplement from page 67, we are also celebrating another year of Open Studios Cornwall, a highly anticipated event that sees Cornish creatives throw open their doors and welcome lovers of art to come in and gain an insight into their world. As the seasons turn and the days lengthen, hundreds of artists, designers and makers from across the Duchy are preparing to throw open the doors of studios and workshops to share their artistic practice against a uniquely Cornish backdrop of creek, countryside and coast. From Saturday 27th May to Sunday 4th June, Open Studios Cornwall will take us on an exploration of multiple art forms – from paintings to pottery, furniture to felt making, weaving to woodturning and a whole lot more besides – as we follow distinctive orange ‘O’s across villages and towns to curate our own art trails. But the event is as much about people as it is about place. It provides us with the chance to dive into a wave of creative possibility and plunge into the depths of emotion that lie beneath. The power of nature to heal the body and soothe the mind is a recurring theme that binds this year’s participants – whether it be the haunting cry of the curlew, the glimmer of golden gorse on a grey day, the wildness of wintry skies, the relentless pounding of surf on rocky outcrops or the searing hues of a summer sunset.

Artist, Sue Read, takes her inspiration from north Cornwall’s dramatic coastline and the elemental power of the ocean. She immerses herself within it to read the waves before committing them to canvas in their everchanging shapes, tints and moods. “I am at my happiest when I am in the water and swim in the sea all year round,” explains Sue. “It is a place to imagine new artworks and to really connect with the natural world, to be conscious of how the water moves, how it feels and how it catches the light.” Many of Sue’s paintings begin on the beach – en plein air – because it is important for her to absorb the sounds and saltiness of her surroundings. In a recent interview for the BBC TV series, Rick Stein’s Cornwall, Sue spoke of ‘mordros’ – the Cornish word for ‘sound of the sea’, which speaks as much of her passion for her birthplace as it does of its cathartic influence on her creative approach. “There is a lot of weather in my paintings, from brooding skies to crashing waves. The waves I paint come very instinctively from the feeling of being in the water, submerged by their intensity, and the timelessness of the tide.

This overriding sense of wellbeing that seaswimming and being present in the natural world provides is not her only creative catalyst. For Sue, it is about ‘finding the quiet': “Being outside at the beginning and end of the day, when you are closest to the sounds and feel of nature, can be meditative and freeing but it can also evoke feelings of vulnerability, fragility, excitement and empowerment, especially on those stormy days when the light is fading and the contrast between sky and sea is so stark.” The result of this perspective is a body of work that is suffused with atmosphere and layers of extraordinary Cornish light as well as personal experience. “Because I was born here, I think I am responding to a deeprooted connection to North Cornwall, an area that is often neglected and forgotten,” Sue continues. Located just beyond Bude, Sue completes her coastal compositions in a beautiful barn studio on a farm that has belonged to her family since the early 1900s. “Back in the studio, the ideas that came to mind whilst in the water become part of the conversation I have with paint. After applying watery layers of colour to my canvas, the shape of a wave or a familiar fragment of coastline will emerge from my filing cabinet of memories.

“Being out in nature stimulates all the senses and I gather in the sights, sounds and smells of my environment, the feel of the air and the light on the water, and record them in my memory to inform my future work,” Sue adds. “Many of the larger wave paintings that I create emerge from my being so close to them in the ocean. I am not trying to capture them exactly. My intention is to encapsulate the movement within them. I aim to imbue them with the rush of adrenaline I feel when I first run in, confronted by their sheer power; when I dive beneath them, spin around in them and feel their full force, or simply enjoy the pure exhilaration of catching a wave and riding it in. I want the viewer to understand and feel what I felt when I was in that moment. That moment is incredibly healing and I really want them to feel that too.”

“In fact, my life is a constant process of seeing and recording ideas and thoughts to be painted, to inform new pieces of artwork, or depict the narrative of this precious part of Cornwall, which is integral to my own story. My paintings do not contain any figurative elements but by making work that is borne of my own experience, I hope my paintings touch, connect and resonate with those who view them.” Atlantic storms have shaped this stretch of coastline over centuries and Sue reflects this sense of erosion and metamorphosis by using similar techniques in the studio. “My process is one of sanding, wiping off, glazing further layers of light and adding impasto brush marks, where paint is applied thickly to provide texture,” Sue explains.

Citing influences as diverse as Pierre Bonnard (1867 to 1947), Joan Eardley (1921 to 1963) and Rose Hilton (1931 to 2019) – an amalgam of French Impressionism, Scottish landscape painting and the St Ives School – the allure of her homeland and Sue’s sense of connection to it infuses her artistic output with an authentic voice. Whether she is memorising the fluid colour palette of the sea – with its whirlpool of greens, blues, turquoises and greys – or observing the ocean through the tangle of a Cornish hedge, Sue is wholly at one with nature when capturing the essence of her beloved Cornwall.

Art in Focus PAINTINGS OF QUIET CORNERS John McKinstry is a Cornwall-based artist who has been painting the landscape for as long as he can remember. “It is something I just can’t imagine not doing,” he explains, “and like most landscape artists, I try to capture those parts of it that most inspire.” For John, these come in many forms; solitary cottages; small hamlets and harbours clinging to the coast; moorland farms stark against imposing skies. aving been lucky enough to be born and raised here in Cornwall, every peek of the sun through the clouds meant time spent outside, in the outdoor playground that is our beautiful county. As a child, days spent by the sea felt commonplace; splashing around in the salty surf with siblings and friends; riding my first surfboard into shore while Dad pushed from behind; finding my balance without my stabilisers on one of the many cycle trails that weave through the countryside and around the coast. The opportunities were endless, and today I can fondly say that this certainly hasn’t changed, along with my regard that every sunny day is one to be spent outside. Cornwall is dotted with local businesses and charities who have made it their mission to prove that there is nothing better than being outdoors with your friends and family, and one such charity is the Children’s Sailing Trust (CST). With a determination to create accessible and affordable watersports and

sailing opportunities for young people in Cornwall, there is a wonderful understanding here that physical and mental health are intrinsically linked. Physically, sailing and paddlesports can help strengthen core muscles and improve balance, coordination, and flexibility while improving cardiovascular fitness. Just as important is the mental well-being and freedom that getting out on the water provides, reducing levels of stress and anxiety. The CST team are very aware that learning new skills and achieving personal goals can help to build self-esteem and self-confidence, vital attributes that can have a positive impact on overall well-being and attitude, which can be difficult to come across in a life spent indoors. their thoughts on a visit to CST in 2022: “It has been a wonderful experience for our students, improving their mental and physical heath, learning about themselves and each other and achieving more than they thought they could, improving self-esteem and confidence.” With locations on both the Helford River and Trevassack lake, the charity also runs something called CST Experiences – commercial courses and sessions for groups, individuals and families. With every swim, sail and SUP session you purchase, you’ll be helping the Children’s Sailing Trust’s work to create opportunities for kids to get out on the water who wouldn’t otherwise get the chance! Over in Kessel Quarry, a once successful granite quarry now flooded with spring water, lies another of Cornwall’s hidden outdoor activity centres. In some ways, Kernow Adventure Park feels more like a nature reserve than an activity centre, nestled within a breathtaking 21-acre site just outside of Falmouth, but there is no shortage of fun to be had here. The calmest of crystal-waters makes for a perfect open-water swim, whether a leisurely float or as part of a training schedule. Or, why not explore the lake by paddle board, gliding over the glassy water at your leisure? Watch out for dragonflies flitting across the water’s surface, and as you explore you may well see the strange shapes of submerged trees peer up from the depths. The E-boats are another fun activity, charged and ready to propel you on a voyage around the lake, but the main attraction is hands down the Aquapark. The chance to jump, splash and slide your way around an impressive inflatable floating obstacle course

isn’t something to be passed up, and with room for up to 40 people why not bring everyone you know for an hour of waterpark fun? For something a little more fast paced, the Monster Slip and Slide needs little introduction. Just four minutes away from the stunning beaches of Widemouth Bay in Bude, here you’re faced with no less than 360 feet of rad summer fun, open seven days a week. Hop into a ring or launch off on a super-fast body board and soar down to the bottom in uninhibited glee, a feeling some of us have long forgotten! To go one step further into adrenalinefuelled territory, Hangloose Adventure Eden is the next level when it comes to outdoor fun in Cornwall. Based in the incredible surroundings of the Eden Project in St Austell (a wonderful day out in itself), Hangloose invites you to push your boundaries and take it to the limit with an incredible range of activities. Cornwall Wildlife Trust is protecting and celebrating our rich coastline with volunteers like you!

hen we think of our Cornish coastline, we picture rugged cliffs, sparkling blue horizons and gentle waves lapping onto never-ending stretches of sand. But what if some of the most beautiful sights could be found beneath the surface, in a world waiting to be discovered? For example, the solar-powered sea slug whose distinctive chloroplasts on its wings, feet and head make it look like a sky full of glittering stars! Or the sea hare, a snail with ‘rabbit ears’ that takes on the colour of the seaweed it eats! Perhaps the most colourful of all, the rainbow sea slug, was only first spotted in Cornish waters last summer. This is just some of the lesser-known wildlife thriving on our shores and being cared for by several skilled marine volunteer groups all around Cornwall’s coastline, thanks to Cornwall Wildlife Trust. The charity set up Your Shore Network, a network of eighteen community-led marine conservation groups that run beach cleans, surveys and events. The charity even trains its own beach rangers and young volunteers to take part in citizen science projects. The Shoresearch groups work hard monitoring the shoreline, while the Seasearch

groups spend time in the water surveying the seas and their Seaquest groups spot marine mammals out at sea from the coast. These groups collect data that monitors the health of Cornish waters and provides evidence of threats, calling on better protection for our valuable marine life. All groups cater their work to a unique marine environment and run fun, interactive and educational public events and talks, helping to raise awareness of the issues surrounding our marine life and habitats while campaigning on their behalf. Anyone can get involved in these groups, even complete beginners! May saw the arrival of the St Ives Food Festival from 12th to 14th down on the sandy expanse of Porthminster Beach, a sandy-toed gathering of artisan tents, food and drink vendors, chef demos from Jack Stein and more, and evening music sessions with bands like The Scribes, Showhawk Duo and Good Old Fashioned Lover Boys to round off the days. Falmouth Food Festival wouldn’t be far behind, and 26th to 28th May would bring crafters, traders, music and art together for a true taste of the town. Cornwall’s wonderfully weird, awardwinning family festival, The Great Estate, certainly did not disappoint this year, and 2nd to 4th June brought back ‘the most rambunctious garden fete’ to be delighted in once more at the glorious Scorrier Estate, packed to the rafters with magic, marvel and mystery as usual. Workshops, talks, arts and crafts could be found at The Sanctuary in a glade of calm and

ne of my favourite things about summer in Cornwall is the constant feel of celebration throughout the warmer months. For me, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of complete contentment you get when you’re standing in the sunshine amongst friends with a cold cider in hand, listening to the familiar melodies of a favourite band wash over you in a live performance to surpass any recording as the sun goes down on a perfect day. Down here in the Duchy we are certainly ones to celebrate the good things in life; fine food and drink, theatrical performances to enthral old and young, and live music to get the toes tapping from acts all over the world. Looking back on Cornwall’s celebratory successes last year, I can’t help but look forward to another festival season as we emerge from the chill of a wintery hibernation to dance together in the sunlight. One thing we do very well down here in the South West is food, so it’s no wonder we like to base entire festivals around it. On 21st to 23rd April this year, the ever-popular Porthleven Food Festival drew revellers from all across the county and further afield for a weekend of mouth-watering morsels and toetapping tunes to kick off the summer season. The Chef’s Theatre showcased the talents of the likes of Anthony Worrall Thompson and Jude Kereama amongst a host of others, while seemingly endless street food vendors tempted tongues left, right and centre. Although the rain made a dramatic appearance at times, it certainly didn’t manage to dampen the festival spirit, and acts like Smokey’s King Shufflers, Oh My God! It’s The Church and Old Time Sailors had folk up and dancing late into the evening.

Last year, Boardmasters brought us sunset blinders like Joy Crookes, Palace, Tom Grennan and the unforgettable Kings of Leon, a hypnotic experience that I for one will never forget, and 2023’s line up promises the event’s continued position on the list of the UK’s biggest and best festivals. With a seemingly endless line up of inspirational musicians old and new bursting the seams of the plump weekend line up from 9th to 13th August, this year is set to raise the bar for Boardmasters yet again. With names like Florence + the Machine, Liam Gallagher, Lorde, Cypress Hill, Rudimental, Ben Howard and The Vaccines among a host of other artists filling the bill, it’s understandable that the weekend draws attendees from all over the country every single year to stand together in green fields alive with the sound of summer while the sun sets into the ocean behind them, casting a golden glow over festival faces. Alongside the magic music line up, Boardmasters would not be the Cornish festival that it is without the worldrenowned surf competition that it plays host in the form of the Boardmasters OPEN, so make sure to head down to Fistral beach to catch the action. With an incredible list of events taking place all across Cornwall this summer, my diary is quickly filling up, and I remember how very lucky I am to live in this beautiful county with such a passion for music, food and coming together in fond celebration while the sun shines over our little corner of the south west.

he Duchy comes into its own at this time of year, transforming from a coast blanketed in delicate auburn leaves to one bordered with crashing waves, sweeping afternoon sunsets and crisp, biting breezes. In spite of this, at the heart of the colder season’s metamorphosis is warmth; crackling pub fires defrost the toes of heat seekers, flickering candles peek through the drawn curtains of houses and steaming cups of mulled wine wait patiently to be sipped. As festive anticipation builds, journey with us to discover some of the most magical ways to spend your days as we sink deeper into winter and the big day approaches on the frosted horizon. You could easily while away several hours wandering across Fowey Town Quay, Albert Quay and Web Street, delighting in the range of wares for all tastes and budgets, and there is plenty of opportunity to stop in one of Fowey’s fantastic eateries for a well-deserved refuel. Moments before the town band strikes up to begin the Christmas parade, wave hello to Father Christmas as he arrives by tugboat to lead the procession. Finally, experience the switching on of the lights amongst delighted onlookers and become immersed in a world of music and magic where festive cheer exists in abundance. If you prefer Christmas lights without the crowds, take a driving tour of some of Cornwall’s most beautiful spots during the colder season, perhaps stopping for a stroll underneath the moonlight. Travel through Newlyn to take in the view of the arching coast with lights indistinguishable from stars, twinkling in the distance as you make your way to Mousehole (mouseholelights.org. uk), arguably one of the best locations in the Duchy for a dazzling display. Fairy lights hang from bare branches, boats bob in the distance and a mysterious sea creature inhabits the harbour while children delight in the stunning spectacle and run from lapping waves upon the shore. The reflection of illuminated house windows and glimmering paper lanterns glow on the glassy water surface as the excited hubbub and sweet smell of mulled wine from open-door pubs fill the air, pulling you in. For an equally breathtaking view, head to Angarrack where there is a captivating display at every turn. Wander through the streets to spot the twelve days of Christmas, marvel at the seven swans a-swimming on the river and take in the dedicated displays lighting up the local houses. Finally, take a trip to Mevagissey

where the pretty harbour becomes alive with colourful lights and its welcoming pubs and eateries offer a cosy retreat after a walk around its perimeter. While these are just a handful of our favourites, you are bound to find breathtaking illuminations wherever you turn in Cornwall as each community creates its own unique display. Alternatively, escape to Cotehele (nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/cornwall/cotehele), the National Trust-run Tudor house with medieval roots, glorious gardens and an expansive estate where a spectacular 60-foot garland adorns the Great Hall. A tradition since 1956, each year the gardeners at Cotehele build the garland from thousands of flowers grown on the estate. Preparations begin in January when flower seeds are sown in the Cut Flower Garden before being picked in late April and dried over the summer and autumn. After admiring the impressive display, follow the festive lights along the stream to Cotehele Mill, decorated in traditional Victorian style, and take in the sights and smells of the flour mill at Christmas. Wrap up warm to enjoy the performances of choirs and bands just outside the Hall Court before wandering across the frosty estate with a hot chocolate in hand; the Piggery in the farmyard has a selection of flavours and toppings to choose from so you can design your own to keep you toasty. On Saturday 23rd December the estate has its Wassail, an annual procession where visitors are encouraged to arrive at the estate in fancy dress with something noisy in hand and scare away the evil spirits, ensuring a bumper crop the following year. A trip to the Bull Pen Gallery offers a range of unique gifts inspired by Cotehele itself, from Christmas garlands and games to festive tree decorations and luxury Christmas biscuits. Spend the day discovering the festive history that lies within the walls of this grand estate and be part of how it continues to be celebrated today.

Boconnoc Estate is delighted to be hosting a fundraising dinner and auction this February, in support of Dive Project Cornwall.

fter a resounding success in its first year, introducing young people from around the UK to the incredible marine environment and instilling in them a desire to cherish and champion its vitality for generations to come, last year alone Dive Project Cornwall trained over 350 school students from around the UK, reaching and educating over 500,000 young people via its education programme on the importance of the ocean. It’s an achievement that the whole team is immensely proud of and, as we embark on a new year, Dive Project Cornwall seeks to make this one even bigger than the last. But it needs support in order to do so, which is where the amazing house and grounds of Boconnoc Estate come in. Steeped in history, Boconnoc Estate has been home and host to some of our country’s greatest luminaries. It is believed to have welcomed King Charles I, who stayed in what is now known as the King’s Bedroom, and home to William Wyndham, Lord Grenville, who married Anne Pitt and later became Prime Minister. Wyndham was also famous for abolishing the slave trade. In 1864, on Lady Grenville’s death, the estate was bequeathed to George Matthew Fortescue, younger son of Lord Grenville’s sister, Hester, who married the first Earl Fortescue of Castle Hill, Devon. It has remained in the Fortescue family ever since.

Today, Boconnoc Estate is only open to the public for private events, most of which are weddings, which makes this upcoming fundraiser a fantastic opportunity to visit the amazing house and grounds whilst supporting one of Cornwall’s finest not-for-profits. Taking place from 7pm on 8th February, the evening will begin with welcome drinks, before a four-course dinner and complimentary wine. At around 9.30pm, a presentation will unveil the extent of the work of Dive Project Cornwall, along with its plans for the future, and at 9.45pm, an auction of more than seven amazing lots will take place, with proceeds going towards helping Dive Project Cornwall achieve its goals. The evening will be hosted by Dive Project Cornwall, with food prepared by a team of renowned chefs, some yet to be named, others including ex-Executive Chef for Rick Stein, Stephane Delourme. It’s shaping up to be an incredible evening for the social calendar, with the best part being that it’s all in support of a cause that is key to a stable future for our planet.
