We understand Cornwall’s property market better than anyone else As we enter the winter, the number of properties for sale are at a record low whilst demand from buyers remains at near all time highs. If you are planning a move in 2022, the early months of the new year are likely to be among the best of the year in which to sell

Please get in contact to discuss how we can help to maximise the value of your property rohrsandrowe.co.uk

•EXPERIENCE• L I F E O N T H E WAT E R The cool and glimmering waters off the Cornish coast have a near-gravitational pull that draws many locals and visitors to her shores, and what better way to experience Cornwall in its purest form than to immerse yourself? MAD Water Sports is here to make it happen. Fresh on the scene and family run, the company offers everything from stand-up paddleboards, surf boards and body boards to hydrofoils, wings, foil boards, wetsuits and kayaks, and the list goes on! Managing Director, Steve Kirk, understands the importance of personal service: “Getting the right product to suit an individual’s needs and wants requires some experience and advice. I think we are without doubt unique in the sense that our advice is based on years of coaching and using these products ourselves.” Head on over to their retail unit, and with their friendly and helpful team there to help, you won’t be disappointed.

Regaining your lost confidence

A local company you can trust

with your home Owner Cassie King, set up The Wig Sanctuary 13 years ago in Somerset after seeing her loved one’s affected by cancer. She has relocated to the beautiful Cornish countryside where, for the past year, she has been helping women of all ages, with their various hair concerns, from her idyllic new Wig Sanctuary Studio. “From childhood dolls to celebrities, transforming hair has always been my passion and delight,” Cassie tells us, “After training and working in London’s West End as a hairstylist, I ran my own hair salons, where working with wigs became part of the wonderful experience.” Although Cassie doesn’t make the wigs herself, she can facilitate custom-made ones if required. However, holding a good stock and having access to thousands of beautiful, ready-made wigs, it’s seldom required. “Hair loss can be devastating,”

explains Cassie, “especially for women and m ell a are f the n i ting emotions that some may feel in even ma ing that first nta t ith me. an only assure them I’m here to help!” According to Cassie’s customer feedback, the whole experience is unexpectedly enjoyable, and often laced with laughter. “Seeing my lovely client’s, leave ea efully ith regained nfiden e is deeply rewarding, and such a blessing for all.” Cassie is often asked about her consultation fee, but she chooses to give her time freely and also supports Cornish charities, inviting optional donations to her collecting box, and her client’s kind donations and fund-raising events have raised over £13,000. For more information call The Wig Sanctuary on 01326 531677 or visit www.thewigsanctuary.co.uk

After experiencing impersonal service from one of the large property agents, Phay MacDowel founded Stylish Cornish Cottages. The ethos of her company has remained the same ever since its inception in 2008; to offer a highly personal service to all homeowners and guests. As a small agency, Stylish Cornish Cottages can offer a truly bespoke service to all home owners. Whether you live next door or abroad, they can tailor a package to meet your needs. So, if you are considering letting y ur r erty f r the first time r you don’t feel that you’re getting the service you deserve, Phay would be delighted to discuss your requirements and book you in for a free, no obligation property appraisal. s we continue to navigate the uncertainties of the pandemic, there is a constant that we hold dear, and that’s the great outdoors – and in particular our own outdoor space. Each environment is different, something that the experts at Heart, Smoke and Soal appreciate. With this in mind, they offer a fully bespoke, design-led process to help customers realise the potential of their outdoor space. Owners Zowie and Gareth Rees, have a background in plumbing and heating and a passion for outdoor living and cooking, meaning they are excellently placed when it comes to advising on your dream project. We ask Zowie about how the process works: “Clients will make contact with us and we are delighted to have a no-obligation chat to talk through initial thoughts and ideas.” he first ste t designing the utd r it hen f y ur dreams is t define hat y u need from your space. The advantage of our custom service is that we can make sure you have everything you need to cook, live and entertain outdoors in style. Even if you don’t have a large space, we can still offer designs that are both elegant and practical.” The next step is to book a visit to the fullystocked showroom, where clients can view a range of products, materials and design ideas in situ. This is a time for one-to-one questions and answers and gives Zowie and her team the opportunity to discover the client’s wants and needs, while at the same time being able to talk through their brands, build options and time scales. “Following a showroom consultation,” adds Zowie, “we recommend a property visit that allows our designer to get a feel for the space and how the area is likely to be used. Having these conversations really is key to understanding our clients. From here, it’s to the drawing board we go, where we will spec the design and create a visual.” n e finalised the r e t is ed and the Heart Smoke and Soal team take it from there. From sourcing all of the materials and products, prepping the ground

and completing the installation, all the client need do is to await completion and handover, when their al fresco experience will be ignited.

A NEW LIFE We take a look at a recent sustainable upcycling project by Duke Stone of Cornwall; a vintage Victorian slate water tank turned into modern kitchen worktops.

A

local developer, Martin White, recently renovated a Victorian manor house and surrounding derelict outbuildings on the Lizard peninsula. In the house, a 200 year old substantial Delabole slate water tank was discovered in the loft, and it wasn’t long before it was carefully removed and taken to Duke Stone of Cornwall. Delabole slate is quarried locally in north Cornwall from the largest and oldest working slate quarry in England. This particular slate is renowned worldwide for its durability and for its aesthetic appeal. Duke stone of Cornwall restored and repurposed this slate by designing, manufacturing and transforming the tank into beautiful kitchen worktops – the stunning results of which can be seen here. The showstopper island, which was once the bottom of the water tank, is a spectacular piece of work at 10cm thick, showcasing the pearlescent grain which runs through the slate. The stunning kitchen worktops are a talking point amongst each new guest that checks in at this Airbnb, aptly named ‘The First Lady of The Lizard’ since the owners learnt that this building once housed the most southerly church in mainland Britain.

The Duke Stone of Cornwall team are experts in design and manufacture and are well versed when it comes to precisely tailoring your home to your needs, and this stunning project is a case in point. So, whether it’s a new build, a renovation, or simply the update of a single room, and you're looking for expert help in bringing your project to life, be sure to give them a call!

t was actually the Cornish pasty that drew the Frankiss family to Cornwall, when in 2017 they moved to the Duchy to take over a pasty shop in Falmouth, Their very popular pasty café, Oggies Cornish Kitchen, is an extension of the family’s love of food and Cornwall. However, knowing that there is so much more to Cornish food than the pasty, they anted t find a ne and additi nal ay to celebrate the plethora of amazing Cornish food producers across the county. The answer came in the shape of The Cornish Kitchen, a luxury deli that opened its doors last month to great acclaim, showcasing the unusual and the artisan. We caught up with owners Rebecca and John who told us: e have een very lu y t find a remises very close to our existing shop with an outside seating area. We then return the used ones to ReRooted h re y le and refill the ttles e really love this idea of a no waste circuit.” The ethos is very much to champion small growers and producers, but John and Rebecca will be led by demand and are happy to source any special products at their customers' request. S

ummer 2021 has seen an extremely positive shift from the lockdowns and government restrictions that have characterised our way lives since the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic. And whilst that didn’t mean we could suddenly ignore the dangers of Coronavirus – even now it is something we must continue to protect ourselves and each other from – it did open up the door for UK holidaymakers to make their way to Cornish shores, and it’s fair to say that summer 2021 was surely one of the busiest on record! But we are by no means experts, which is why we decided to take this rtunity t re e t and as the ini ns of those who are; to discern their views on the stay ati n trend s e ifi ally here in rn all and t find ut hether it is ne we can expect to continue. More than that, as the weather starts to cool, we wanted to curate an insider’s guide to making the most of our wonderful county, as summer turns to autumn, and inevitably winter. ea ing first ith e rge d ard Collins, Managing Director of Cornish Traditional Cottages (corncott.com), we learn that the upward trend of UK staycations is, at least in part, a result of restrictions on those who might otherwise have travelled abroad for their summer breaks. With this in mind, he says: “Cornwall has been given a fantastic opportunity to showcase the county and its hospitality industry and, if we as businesses have got it right, then I think that we will see many who have holidayed here f r the first time return and e me regular visitors.” Catherine Coad, Brand Manager for Cornish Horizons (cornishhorizons. co.uk), agrees, explaining: “Over the last 18 months, a wider group of people have dis vered rn all and the enefits f holidaying in the UK. I think combined with these enefits as ell as the nfusi n and uncertainty of holidaying abroad, Cornwall is set to continue as a popular holiday destination for many, even as holidaying abroad becomes easier.

ABOVE Soak beneath the stars with a luxury stay from Cornish Horizons LEFT Trevoda House, available through Cornish Horizons

“We know from speaking to customers that many enjoyed their staycation to Cornwall so much, that they’re already planning their next UK break,” Catherine continues. “With our bookings for next year signifi antly u at this int in time compared to previous years, we certainly believe this trend will continue.” So, what about an autumn or winter break in the Duchy? Surely once the weather begins to cool off, being so close to the sea loses its appeal? Wrong! As Phoebe from Housel Bay hotel (houselbay.com) says: “We celebrate every season here. a h seas n sees the vista f the i ard peninsula transform, with something new to experience whenever you choose to visit.” In fact, this is true of the whole of Cornwall, and as long as you’re near the sea, Phoebe’s recommendations of stargazing, exploring secluded coves and soaking in the stunning winter sunsets and dramatic winter storms, are pastimes not just reserved for the UK’s most southerly point. Although it has to be said, on the i ard fr m y ur ase at usel ay they are especially spectacular! “The thing we tell our guests about autumn is that it can surprise you,” says hil endall f under f rever rn all Unique Retreats (forevercornwall.co.uk).

“The crowds will have faded away, so beaches are yours to enjoy, along with the last drops of summer sun and the warm (ish) seas.” Phil recommends making the most of the autumn swells, but also iterates if you’re looking for a more relaxed experience, that en ater s imming ith the right kit, is still an option – particularly on the south coast. To put it a different way, as Catherine says: “It doesn’t matter what time of year you visit Cornwall; you will be sure to experience some of Britain’s best coastal towns, villages and attra ti ns in luding the den r e t Minack Theatre and so much more!” In fact, she continues: “Autumn is one of my favourite times of year in Cornwall. The county is quieter, the weather is still warm, and the countryside starts to embrace a vibrant golden glow, and there are many adventures to be had from wild swimming and woodland foraging. “The winter is also wonderful, being able to enjoy rejuvenating walks along quiet sandy beaches before snuggling up in fr nt f a r aring en fire t ee y u warm. Although very different to a summer staycation, autumn and winter in Cornwall still have so much to offer.” Indeed, no matter when you decide to visit Cornwall, no trip here would be complete without a trip to the beach. Among many others, Catherine recommends Rock beach and Daymer Bay, both of which “offer fantasti vie s a r ss the amel stuary and to Padstow with plenty of sand at high tide and are both great spots for watching indsurfing. he als suggests al ing the South West Coast Path around to Polzeath, if you have time. “You won’t be disappointed!”

ade up of vast stretches of fertile land and surrounded by clean salty waters, Cornwall offers a thriving natural larder that has become globally renowned and locally treasured. While this beloved county is famed for the immensely beautiful landscapes and breathtaking coastal vistas we all recognise and adore, the unique culinary signatures that hail from the farms, bakeries, breweries, distilleries and restaurants are renowned throughout the rest of the country, and in fact the world. But what makes the Cornish food and drink industry so successful in and out of the Duchy? With such a rich and complex industry at the heart of our county, we thought it only prudent to consult Cornwall Trade and Investment on what quality food and drink really means for the Duchy, and the people who live here. “Built on the f undati ns made y the regi n s fishermen and farmers, Cornwall’s food and drink sector has proven itself a cornerstone of UK gastronomy,” explains Nicola Lloyd, Director of Trade and Investment. “As the number one food destination in the UK, the industry is key to the region’s economy, seeing an annual turnover in excess of £2 billion!” Unsurprisingly, the sector creates one in three jobs in Cornwall and is a huge draw for tourists, which in turn creates further employment. The incredible food and drink produced, sold and exported from Cornwall is integral to the region as a whole and has

an ever-growing place on the local, national and global food highway. From the Cornish pasty and the iconic cream teas to the freshest local seafood caught right here, Cornwall has made a name for itself in the arena of top-notch cuisine. There seems to be an incredible connection between businesses and their suppliers and produce that lies at the heart of the county, and Nicola shares with us her thoughts as to why that is: “The region’s growers, suppliers and food and drink businesses are all united by a genuine passion for Cornwall’s produce. Cornwall’s peninsula effect encourages practical collaboration with purpose across the local food system: shortening local supply chains, maximising regional food value, minimising food waste and improving food justice.” This collaboration is key to the sustainability and future growth of Cornwall’s food economy and is responsible for its innovation and forward-thinking practices. When it comes to catering and hospitality, an industry that the Duchy is undeniably famed for, Cornwall has seen numerous Michelin starred chefs operating locally, drawn by both the culture and the quality of seafood and farm produce on offer.

Rick Stein, Paul Ainsworth and Nathan Outlaw are amongst the most wellknown, not to mention Michael Caines, who has recently set up shop in the pretty harbour-side village of Porthleven, known locally for its rich food culture with a dedicated festival every year to celebrate it. Born and raised in Devon, Michael was immersed into a local food culture from the start: “I grew up in a large family, and my love of food and cooking came from the big family meals we always shared together, prepared by my mother who was a wonderful cook. My father loved to grow vegetables and fruit in our garden, and so I grew up appreciating the av urs f the freshest f ds i ed that day and simply prepared.” After nurturing a natural talent and passion for food, spending time with chefs like Raymond Blanc in Oxfordshire, and the late Barnard Loisseau in Paris, Michael returned home to Devon to take his place at Gidleigh Park as Head Chef with a new wealth of knowledge and experience. “Bernard taught me the importance of ‘terroir’,” recalls Michael, looking back to his time in France, “that all great cuisines are rooted in the products, produce and seasonal ingredients of their own locality.” Having spent 21 years at the helm of Gidleigh Park, in 2016 he went on t reate the lu ury five star untry h use hotel, Lympstone Manor – a dream come true for the Devon chef.

i hael s uisine is refined and elegant and is rooted in seasonality, regionality and l ality an eth s re e ted in all f his establishments, including the fourth addition to his collection – The Harbourside Refuge Restaurant and Bar in Porthleven. The protected harbour was originally created as a safe haven for sea vessels travelling along the beautiful yet rugged south Cornish coast. Here, Michael has created a safe haven for all lovers of food and drink who choose to make their ay t this idylli s t in fine eather or foul. “You can’t help but be aware of the beauty and power of the sea when you come to Porthleven, and also the rich bounty that it erennially yields t th se intre id fishermen who brave its wrath,” explains Michael. Michael’s belief in seasonality and regionality means that this strong ethos is central to his cuisine and to the supply of ingredients and produce: “I have gone on record many times that the south west doesn’t just have the best larder in the UK, it has the best larder in Europe!” It’s this attitude shared by leading chefs and local artisans that is putting Cornwall at the forefront of a delicious movement towards a local resourcefulness, with more and more people becoming aware of this rich, natural bounty that lies on our very doorstep. One such cultivator of a popular local product is the family run Trink Dairy, a farm that understands the value of knowing exactly where your food and drink originates from. Having earnt itself a reputation for high-quality, great tasting produce, with a two-year consecutive Taste of the West Gold award, and named Champion Dairy Product for 2020, Trink is at the top of the list for many local residents and businesses.

Although dogs are restricted at the other Cornish National Trust properties and gardens, there are still miles of coastline and countryside to explore. Just a stone’s throw from Cornwall Living HQ, y u ll find the enr se state here a lovely level path meanders along the side of the Loe Pool. You can either do an out-and-return walk from either Helston or the National Trust car park on Penrose Hill to Loe Bar and back, stopping off at The Stables café for refreshment or, for a longer walk circular walk, you can cross the sandy Loe Bar and return via Degibna woods. In spring, expect carpets of bluebells to light u the dland r e l re the i t rian bath house or simply sit a while to admire what was once a late 18th century deer park backed by Penrose House, home to the Rogers family, who gave the estate to the National Trust in 1974 – the largest single gift to the Trust in Cornwall.

e are all familiar with the National Trust’s houses and parklands but did you know that a large part of Cornwall’s coastline and countryside is owned and managed by the National Trust (nationaltrust.org.uk)? From the rugged cliffs of west Cornwall, where majestic, UNESCO-protected engine houses rise from the rocks, to the more gentle nature of Loe Pool and the Penrose Estate, the National Trust prides itself in being welcoming to all; especially dogs. With that in mind, we would love to share with you some our favourite National Trust places and areas to visit with your hound this summer. There are two stunning gardens that are great for exploring with dogs. Furthest west is Trengwainton, near Penzance. This sheltered garden bursts with trees and shrubs at every turn. Dogs on leads are very welcome and there is plenty to sniff out in the 25-acre garden. Water bowls are available at the tea rooms where you are welcome to sit in the garden and enjoy a cuppa or a light lunch. Head inland towards Helston and you’ll discover Godolphin; an ancient and atmospheric estate at the bottom of Godolphin Hill. Here you can wander happily through the gardens for a days-gone-by feel or for the more adventurous, a walk to the top of the hill on a clear day affords the most amazing 360-degree view. Dogs are very welcome but should be kept on a lead in the garden as well as when exploring the wider countryside due to grazing livestock.

St Agnes in the middle. All have plenty of spots for refreshment and St Agnes even has its own brewery, The Driftwood Spars. Cross the county and the Roseland peninsula is one of those places where time seems to have stood still. This unspoilt area of Cornwall is excellent walking country. From St Anthony Head there are panoramic views from across the Carrick Roads. The sister castles of St Mawes and Pendennis keep watch over the water, and on a clear day you can see as far as the Helford passage, with the Lizard just beyond. Carne, Towan and Porthcurnick beaches are free from dog restrictions so you can play on the sand with your pooch to your heart’s content. And if you’ve worked up a thirst, Carne has a pop-up horsebox in high season serving drinks and ice-cream while Porth Farm café with its sunny courtyard, just yards from Towan, offers lunch, drinks and sweet treats. Travel up the coast and you’ll reach the Fowey Estuary. This is Daphne Du Maurier country, the setting for many of her books, with Menabilly her own Cornwall home. estled in the heart f ld ey y u ll find Readymoney Cove which allows dogs outside of the two peak months of July and August. This sheltered, sandy cove has St Catherine’s Castle on one side and medieval Fowey on the other. From here experienced walkers will enjoy taking the South West Coast Path towards Polridmouth (dog-friendly all year round) and on to Gribbin Head and its daymark with glorious views out across the sea. DID YOU KNOW? In association with Forthglade (forthglade.com) the National Trust has created a canine code. • Take the lead: please keep your dog on a short lead at all times while visiting the gardens • Scoop that poop: bag it and bin it to keep the places beautiful. • Paws for thought: plant diseases can be present in leaf litter and spread on the bottoms of shoes and paws, so keeping to paths helps prevent this. Cornwall’s most southerly peninsula, with its iconic lighthouse and craggy cliffs jutting out into the Atlantic, is a wonderful area to explore with your hound. The South West Coast Path runs along the edge of the peninsula joining up the beaches of Gunwalloe and Poldhu, on to Mullion Cove, past Kynance with its famous rock stacks and tur u ise sea ef re finally ringing you out at Lizard Point. There are cafés at all these points along the way, so plenty of opportunity for a cream tea or a Cornish ice cream. Whether you choose to walk the whole route or just some of it, keep your eyes peeled for seals and seabirds. You never know, you might be rewarded with a Cornish chough sighting. The birds returned to Cornwall in 2001 after an absence of 30 years and have been here ever since. ead ver t the n rth ast and y u ll find Cornwall wears a different cloak. Mining heritage dominates the landscape, with engine houses rising up from the cliff edge, giving the landscape around Chapel Porth and St Agnes a more rugged feel. Along this Heritage Coast are endless miles of cliff walks, backed by heathland offering a veritable dog’s playground. However, care should always be taken when walking with your pup if the footpath passes close to the cliff edge. Always best to have the lead at the ready to navigate these stretches. The seaside towns of Portreath and Perranporth mark either end of the St Agnes Heritage Coast, with the village of
