o far, this summer has truly been one to remember down here in sunny Cornwall. With the sunshine coming into its own after what felt like a lifetime of winter, the Cornish sea seems to have regained a cheeky sparkle over a radiant blue that has drawn many of us to take a dip, now that the cold salt-water sting has faded into a refreshing summer relief as we spend our days on the many beaches that edge this fabulous county. As we reach the end of the summer, it seems only right to reflect on the new memories made with loved ones as the season begins to turn towards crisp autumnal days. Whether it's intrepid hikes along the stunning coastal paths that border the land, trips into local attractions that celebrate the rich Cornish history and heritage, or stopping off along the way at the multitude of eateries that truly make the most of the bountiful natural larder that resides here, you're never short of activities to inspire wonder when you pay a visit to the Duchy. Explore some of the county's most treasured gardens alongside Rosie Cattrell in this month's cover feature from page 10, where you'll discover the charms of places like Trengwainton and Morrab Gardens, not to mention the enchanting tale behind the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Looking to take the plunge and make the move down to Cornwall for good? Make sure to take a look at some of the luxury properties currently on the market from page 16. Or, if the time isn't quite right, we look into some of our favourite holiday retreats from page 25, so you can rest your head in a home away from home whenever the urge strikes in some of the most stunning locations around. Where would we be without the tantalising offering of locally produced delights, like that of carefully crafted spirits such as Cornish Rock Gin on page 44, or the thrill of learning something entirely new under the guidance of eFoil on page 49? It's those little details that can make a trip to the south west particularly special, finding time to take a moment and breathe in what's around you, and if you're looking for inspiration when it comes to a special keepsake, we've got you covered on page 50. While the warmer months have cast a dazzling light across Cornwall, the golden hour of the season is only just beginning, and the days ahead hold just as much promise of magic.

Around Cornwall in 38 churns A remarkable and unusual art project has been launched to raise funds for Cornish healthcare charity Cornwall Hospice Care. ‘Around Cornwall in 38 Churns’ has been devised by Sue Dennett of Newquay who also wanted to showcase the county’s talented artists and stunning locations. The project is being supported by Rodda’s Creamery, Visit Cornwall and David Lay Auctions and will culminate in an auction of the churns. Artists from across Cornwall have been given a churn, kindly donated by Rodda’s Creamery, and have offered their talent and time to decorate each one in their own particular style. They include famous names such as Kurt Jackson, Michael Praed, Dick Twinney and Lorna Wiles. Each will be featured at venues around Cornwall through the summer and people will be encouraged to follow a trail. Nick Rodda is the Managing Director of Rodda’s Creamery: “Churns are not only iconic but a beautiful shape

n Lorna Wiles

and I think they lend themselves to this charity project. This is a brilliant idea and showcases our heritage while also giving a nod to the current day talents of our local artists. Rodda’s is part of the tapestry of Cornwall and we’ve always worked with local charities.” “The auction will be on Wednesday 21st September at Truro Cathedral and given the comments we’ve already received I think the bidding is going to be feverish,” says organiser Sue Dennett (the Chair of the charity’s Newquay Fundraising Group), who’s supported the charity for the last 38 years. e all know the story of The Secret Garden; a hidden gem long forgotten, discovered by chance, fallen in love with and brought back to life to be kept a secret no more. What you may not know is that there are ‘secret gardens’ all over Cornwall, lying in wait for their next visitors to push open a door hidden by ivy and fern and step into a world of vibrant colour and eager growth, each bursting into bloom for the summer. Lost to the brambles of time for almost 80 years, the gardens of Heligan’s 200-acre estate had long been forgotten after the gardeners who carefully tended the ever-expanding collection of exotic flora were sent to the trenches of World War I. Out of 14, sadly only four would return. While this would be a story to dismantle many of the large estates throughout Britain, Heligan was different in the way that the gardens were never sold or developed, but left to slumber under a veil of ivy and thorns for decades, waiting to be discovered. Today, visitors can stumble upon the Lost Valley with its enchanting ponds and exquisite wildflowers, carpeted with bluebells in the spring. A peaceful home to both wildlife, ancient trees and the traditional practises of coppicing and charcoal burning.

Since 1659, Heligan was the ancestral home of the Tremayne family, who lived in the manor house. Incredibly, it is still owned by the same family, having been passed down to one of the descendants, John Willis. On 16th February 1990, he accompanied Tim Smit in a discovery that would change their lives forever, uncovering The Lost Gardens of Heligan. Stumbling upon the remnants of what was to be known as the ‘Thunderbox Room’, they came across a motto etched in pencil on the wall – 'Do not come here to sleep or to slumber’ – alongside the signatures of the lost gardeners, signed August 1914. “It had brought the garden alive for us, real people had led real lives here, and we now knew some of their names. It felt at once like a shared intimacy and an invasion of privacy. We could not ignore it even if we wanted to,” Tim explains in his book The Lost Gardens of Heligan.. “We were fired by a magnificent obsession to bring these once glorious gardens back to life in every sense and to tell, for the first time, not tales of lords and ladies but of those ‘ordinary’ people who had made these gardens great, before departing for the Great War.” Today, Heligan represents 200 acres of paradise for the explorer, wildlife enthusiast, plant lover and garden romantic, and with Victorian gardens,

pleasure grounds and even a jungle to entice you, you can expect a unique experience all year round. “The history of the gardens of Cornwall, great and small, is unique and remarkable,” explains Sir Robert Owen, Chairman of the Cornwall Garden Society. “It is the story of passionate horticulturists, the owners of gardens and their gardeners, who took full advantage of our wonderful climate and landscape, and, so importantly, introduced many wonderful plants from all over the world. The story of the intrepid plant hunters associated with Cornish gardens – sent out to roam the world in search of rare plants, and successfully propagated them in Cornwall – is fascinating, and made a very significant contribution to horticulture in the UK. We, the Cornwall Garden Society, can claim some insight into the historical importance of the Great Gardens of Cornwall, having ourselves been in existence for over 120 years, and enjoying a close relationship with many of the gardens.” Another historic Cornish estate with gardens and grounds worthy of our admiration can be found at Cotehele. Having been the ancestral home of the Edgecumbe family from 1353 to 1947, the gardens here have been carefully developed since the 16th century into the thriving utopia they provide today, with the Woodland Valley garden being a charming late Victorian addition. Spanning 14 acres of gardens and 12 acres of orchards, Cotehele's garden is unique and varied all year round, but a visit in summer is particularly enchanting. The borders in the upper gardens become a myriad of herbaceous plants and colourful flowers, while the terraces burst with hydrangeas, roses, geraniums and irises. The 19th century saw a boom for local

industries, and Cotehele Quay would bustle with busy vessels loading and unloading cargo. Paddle steamers made their way upriver to see the Tamar Valley’s famous blossoming orchards of Cotehele, which are still there to be enjoyed today. Preserved by the Edgecumbe family as a historic talking-point, rather than a comfortable family home, Cotehele is now in the hands of the National Trust. Built in medieval times, the current house is mostly Tudor and is full of stories about the family who owned it for 600 years, with an expansive garden cultivated over hundreds of years. Cotehele invites explorations of the formally planted terraces, adventures in the Valley Garden amongst the medieval stewpond and dovecote leading down to the River Tamar, or tranquil wanderings in the Upper Garden around a pond of red and white water lilies. Over in Penzance, the incredible and extensive collection of sub-tropical plants that you’ll stumble upon if you find yourself walking the winding paths of Morrab Gardens have been accumulated over many years. The original planting in the 1880s was a result of gifts from local estates like Trengwainton, Trewidden and Tresco after Penzance had become a popular seaside resort and demand for a recreational park became apparent. Upon holding a competition to design the

park, London designer, Reginald Upcher, won the prize of 20 guineas with his plan for the three-acre site. The original design, which included a bandstand and sub-tropical garden divided by a series of curvilinear walks, is still much in evidence today. When the park opened in 1889, the Gardeners’ Chronicle wrote: “One of its features is a Palm-grove, where tourists may fancy themselves in the tropics or on Mediterranean shores.” A significant role for the gardens was the study of acclimatisation of rare sub-tropical plants, a tradition which continues to this day. “But the importance of the major Cornish gardens is not simply historical,” Sir Robert Owen continues. “They continue to play a role that is both important to Cornwall and to horticulture more widely. Not only are they such a wonderful resource for those of us privileged to live in the county, but they rightly continue to attract visitors in vast numbers, thereby making an important contribution to our local economy. Secondly, they are a living phenomenon. Whilst many are of considerable age, others have been created or restored within recent times, most notably the Eden Project. Thirdly, the gardens provide a bank of experience of horticulture, which will be invaluable as we begin to address the effects of global warming. “They also provide an important training ground for those, young or old, seeking to pursue a career in horticulture, a resource supported by both practical and academic courses, and facilities for research run by academic institutions, such as Duchy College, Rosewarne and Eden Project Learning. I have no doubt that as we adapt to climate change, now accepted as happening by even the most diehard of sceptics, the role of Cornish gardens and their gardeners will be as great and as important for the future as it has been in the past.”

It’s also within easy reach of the Roseland, the peninsula famed for its exceptional beaches and vibrant sailing scene. Approached via a long driveway, which passes the intriguing new construction of a lodge (itself providing great potential for friends to stay, or as a holiday let), as you arrive at the main house, you’re immediately wowed by the incredible condition of this Grade II listed home. The generous sitting room features a broad fireplace for wintry evenings, and at the oppositve end of the house, a beautiful drawing room provides views over the gardens and also features an attractive fireplace.

There are a total of five bedrooms (plus two more in the aforementioned lodge), including an impressive master, all serviced by two lovely bathrooms. The sheer quality of the interiors and fittings is incredible, bringing the entire ensemble together to provide exceptional, comfortable accommodation. Outside, mature specimen plants and shrubs can be found across the 3.5 acres of gardens and grounds, as can a three-bay garage, and a summerhouse that would be perfect as a studio or area for teenagers. There is also a further outbuilding that’s currently used as an office. What’s perhaps most idyllic, however, is the overall hilltop setting, providing distant views to Probus and its church, surrounded by quiet, arable farmland, and sheltered by its own woodlands to the west.

LIFESTYLE CAMEL ESTUARY

f o l e l r u TheTHE a ESTUARY In conversation with Rohrs and Rowe, we ask what it is about the Camel Estuary that continues to draw buyers in search of their dream home. é ABOVE It's easy to see the appeal

ê BELOW Great Engollan Farmhouse

W

inding its way gently inland, the Camel Estuary is a walkers’ paradise, a wildlife haven, a must-visit for cyclists, and home to some of the most esteemed chefs and restaurateurs in Cornwall. No wonder then, that the area has become a beacon of promise to those seeking a tonic to an increasingly busy and stressful lifestyle, providing a sense of ocean-aired freedom that so many of us have found ourselves craving in the wake of events over the past two years. Especially in light of the pandemic that’s still very much

fresh in our minds, more homeowners than ever have found themselves looking to their own four walls, examining their lifestyles and re-assessing what’s important. Perhaps nobody is more familiar with this trend than Martyn Rohrs and Matthew Rowe, founders of award-winning Cornish estate agents, Rohrs & Rowe, who sell some of the Camel Estuary area’s most exceptional and soughtafter property. Before we get into those however, let’s dive a little deeper into what makes this stretch of Cornwall so alluring. If days spent under the power of sail are your idea of zen, then the Camel Estuary is home to some of the finest sailing waters in the UK, particularly in Rock. Championing the philosophy and traditions of good seamanship, keen racing and a happy family atmosphere, Rock Sailing Club welcomes new members with open arms, providing the perfect environment to spend time with likeminded seagoers, a place to make life-long friends and share in the joy of time spent on the water. Perhaps, instead, you wish to take a guided tour of the waterways, sitting back as you watch the coastline ebb past? If so, there are a number of tour agencies providing trips designed to show you the very best of what the sheltered waters here have to offer,

including wildlife spotting and even fishing, perfect for catching your supper before heading home and firing up the grill. Alternatively, if you prefer solid ground beneath your feet, then the Camel Estuary provides some of the finest cycling you’ll find in Cornwall, namely the Camel Trail, which offers cyclists of all ages and abilities the chance to take an easy ride. There are plenty of places to enjoy lunch, too, all with incredible views and spots from which to watch the local wildlife. Of course, for some, nothing beats a bucket and spade day on the beach, in which case, one of the famed ‘Seven Bays’, centred around the small village of St Merryn, will provide you with all the sun, sand and sea you could ask for. Whichever way in which you choose to spend your days, the Cornish sea air is sure to sharpen your appetite, and where better to be than in the culinary capital of Cornwall, Padstow? Renowned for the collection of celebrity owned restaurants, including those of Rick Stein and Paul Ainsworth, with Nathan Outlaw’s offering available further along the coast, there’s reason that foodies flock to Padstow every year! Drawing on the region’s abundance of fresh, seasonal produce, daily caught seafood and locally reared meats, the changing menus of the restaurants around the estuary are an allure in themselves. But it isn’t just the landscape, coastline and lifestyle that draw buyers to the Camel Estuary. The stamp of property here is

exceptional, as is evident in the list of available, coming soon and recently sold homes on the books of Rohrs and Rowe. Take Trevoseen, for example; a five/sixbedroom coastal home with outstanding sea views across the entirety of Trevone Bay (one of the aforementioned Seven Bays). Striking and exceptionally spacious, the house has been designed to maximise the stunning, uninterrupted sea views. Set out over three floors, the accommodation and living spaces provide ample room to spread out, with floor-to-ceiling windows opening out onto the terrace and providing the ocean views beyond. With beautifully set-out gardens, a broad sun terrace and an excellent, recently built summer house at the bottom of the garden that’s perfect for entertaining, Trevoseen is a prime example of the quality buyers have come to expect from property in the Padstow area. Another contrasting yet excellent example, is Great Engollan Farm. This handsome, detached coastal farmhouse boasts five bedrooms in the main residence. Add to this a one-bedroom integral annexe called The Loft, as well as an additional one-bedroom separate cottage within the grounds called The Nook, and the flexible accommodation at Great Engollan lends itself to visitors, dependent family members, or even the potential for additional income via holiday lettings. With parking for numerous cars, a detached double garage, and being less than two miles from the nearest beach, Porthcothan Bay, Great Engollan provides the space and lifestyle that two years of lockdowns have left so many searching for. Rohrs & Rowe have numerous other properties either on, or coming to, the market in the Camel Estuary area over the course of the summer, so be sure to get in contact and register your details to find out more.

With a nod to the nautical, Sail Shades Direct provide a stunning option for anybody hoping to bring their garden vision to life.

I

n an increasingly busy and stressful world, having an outside space in which to relax and re-engage with nature can provide much-needed respite from an otherwise hectic lifestyle. This is the ethos behind Sail Shades Direct. The business was founded by Jamie Watts, who explains: “Back in 2012, when working as a sailmaker in the marine industry, I realised how quiet we became during the summer and wanted to do something to fill the time during the warmer months.” His creative mind eventually settled on the idea of using the same hardy materials that he was used to working with during his main occupation, only this time to create beautiful, bespoke shelters. As well as creating stunning outdoor shelters with designs and shapes that are perfectly suited to those awkward Cornish gardens, Jamie and his team can manufacture blinds for the inside of your house, as well as complete conservatories and garden buildings. “We have access to an excellent range of quality structural materials and retractable systems, with lots of technical fabrics sourced from specialist suppliers all around the world. These include woven polyester fabrics from the USA, PVC

fabrics from France and mesh products from Australia. What’s more, we deliberately avoid cheaper products as they tend not to last. “Our shades and pergolas cover lots of different applications,” he continues. “From small sails to provide shade in a garden, to large waterproof sails over pub and beer gardens; we can even do feature sails for indoor locations and pergolas with fabric roofs. Manufacturing here in Cornwall means we have so many potential applications.” So, what could this mean for you? If you’re among the many who have decided to rethink the way in which you use your garden, then there’s almost certainly a Sail Shade to suit your vision. Be it for a small family dining space or a full-blown outdoor kitchen, Jamie explains that their square or rectangular pergolas are perfect for such areas, providing shelter from the changeable Cornish elements and made from materials that celebrate the heritage of the county in which we love to live.

RETREAT Discover unique luxury stays on Cornwall’s south coast for a holiday remember.

B

odrugan Barton lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the soft south Cornish coast, just a mile away from the fishing village of Mevagissey. The location is nothing short of superb; you’ll find beaches within walking distance, pubs, cafés and a range of eclectic shops in one of the most charming harbour villages in Cornwall. Gorran Haven, with its family friendly beach and facilities, is just under two miles away. Further afield, the beauty of the wider Roseland peninsula beckons with acclaimed coastal cafés and beaches, as does the stunning Caerhayes Estate with its castle and spring gardens, and the renowned Lost Gardens of Heligan. Bodrugan offers guest accommodation, from two to eight people, in five luxury holiday cottages. All of the cottages have well-equipped kitchens, comfortable sitting rooms and beds with crisp white cotton sheets and snuggly duvets for a good night’s sleep. Recently awarded a Visit Britain four-star Gold award, they are situated on rolling farmland with stunning walks and access to the South West Coast Path, and lie within an ancient farmstead of historical significance. For those who prefer a different style of roof, Bodrugan also has six glamping cabins known as Wigwams®. With uninterrupted sea views and decks, the beauty of these cabins is that

they are self-contained with en-suite showers, kitchenettes, and bedding available on request. Guests at Bodrugan can enjoy swimming in the indoor heated pool, lounging in the garden or cooking up some local produce on the barbeques, followed by evenings around the firepits. A stroll to Portmellon – just at the bottom of the hill from the farm gate – offers kayaks and paddle boards for hire and The Shack café offers great coffee, bread and cake, with bicycles available to hire at Pentewan for those who like to explore on two wheels. So, who will you bring on your Bodrugan adventure? It is a great place for families, but also loved by groups of friends, reunions, yoga groups and writers as there is a lovely studio space available as well. Whatever the reason for a trip to Cornwall, Bodrugan has something very special to offer and owners Tim and Sally can’t wait to welcome you.

50 years

CELEBRATING With family at the heart of everything they do, Hendra Holiday Park celebrates its 50th birthday.

T

his year, Cornish, family run Hendra Holiday Park is celebrating its 50th year of family holidays. It began back in 1972, as a touring park, and remains a family run business to this day. Hendra provides an extensive range of holiday homes, luxury lodges and glamping pods, as well as 600 touring pitches. With 100 acres of park land, a team of gardeners work hard all year round to maintain their grounds, planting the most stunning floral displays. Hendra’s Oasis Fun Pools are the largest in the south west. With heart-pounding flumes, river rapids and indoor and outdoor swimming pools, they’re a fun-filled day out whatever the weather. Visitors, guests and locals can also enjoy authentic Italian pizza at Mario’s Pizzeria, or tasty favourites at their fish and chip shop. There’s even a range of cooked breakfasts, pub food, coffee, and cake at their poolside Terrace restaurant – not to mention their Deck Bar with live music in the evenings! With issues surrounding the environment prevalent everywhere you go, Hendra have worked hard to evolve into a sustainably run park. In 2011, they installed their ‘SunPower Meadow’, a field filled with solar

panels which powers over 70% of the park’s electricity. In 2013, they installed a biomass boiler which heats the Oasis Fun Pools with locally, sustainably sourced woodchips and offcuts from around site. In 2014, they built Woodland Barton Wind Farm which is run by Hendra, not to mention their own water supply from an underground spring. Around the site they are continuously planting trees and shrubs, as well as building beehives and birdhouses to provide natural habitats for local wildlife. Over the 2021 winter months, they planted over 200 trees and shrubs, with an aim to provide a home for local wildlife, and to become as green and self-sufficient as possible in the future. In the last ten years, they have reduced their carbon footprint by 60%! With families at the heart of everything they do, Hendra provides a safe, fun and exciting holiday destination for visitors, whether they are travelling from near or far.

Retreat to

THE COAST

A development of privately owned holiday homes offering a coastal haven of peace and relaxation.

O

cean Cove is a five-star private holiday park that benefits from incredible views out across the Atlantic ocean, and on a clear day you might be lucky enough to spot Lundy Island in the distance. There are 79 lodges in total across the park, kept safe and secure by a gated entrance and an on-site park warden who is available in case of emergencies. With new and pre-owned holiday homes for sale, there are a variety to choose from; sales typically complete within a month of putting down a deposit. Whilst subletting is not permitted – the reason why this is such a quiet and peaceful retreat – families and friends are welcome to enjoy your property throughout the year. Owners have exclusive use of the 15m indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, steam room, gym and lounge, recently refurbished to a very high standard and open seven days a week. Cornwall’s Atlantic coast spans over 40 miles from Bude to Perranporth along a wildly beautiful stretch of north Cornwall. Ocean Cove couldn’t be better situated between the quintessentially Cornish

Boscastle harbour and historic Tintagel, steeped in myth and legend and home to the mystical castle. You can access both on foot via the South West Coast Path, perfect for working up an appetite before a bite of lunch at Boscastle Farm Shop or a well-earned cream tea at the Bossiney Tea Room. Trebarwith Strand is close enough for an evening swim or early morning surf, while the enchanting woodland and waterfalls at St Nectan’s Glen are less than a mile away. Nature never STOPS

S

ome may think that Cornwall closes its doors in autumn and winter, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. This is a time when the county is at its best. Gone are the busy roads and the bustling crowds and it’s a time of year when the Duchy and its visitors can take a breath. Set atop the cliff, a stone’s throw from Britain’s most southerly point, Housel Bay hotel is a retreat like no other. On calm days, you could have nearby beaches almost to yourselves, or walk the South West Coast Path direct from the hotel’s garden, stopping for a cold-water dip in a hidden cove, enjoying the abundance of local wildlife, and soaking up the dramatic seascapes and winter sunsets. The nearby sleepy fishing village of Cadgwith (where most of the restaurant's seafood is sourced) plays host to smugglers' tales and has a vibrant community – the Christmas light switch on and Christmas Day swim are events not to be missed! Or head to Kynance Cove where you can explore the epic caves at low tide. When the weather turns, the hotel garden is the perfect place for storm watching as the Atlantic swells start to build and when night falls, wrap up warm and experience some of the county’s best stargazing. You’re always assured of a warm welcome at Housel Bay; you’ll feel instantly at home as you cosy up in front of the open fire in the Snug.

Rooms have panoramic sea views of the beautiful Lizard countryside and as you cast your gaze seawards, you’ll feel your shoulders drop and your cares ebb away. They say that food is good for the soul and this is very true of the culinary experience at Housel Bay. The emphasis is on local and seasonal menus at both The Terrace, and Fallowfields, where you can experience a three-course evening menu or five course tasting experience at this AA two-rosette restaurant…both come with a side of incredible sea views, drawing on exceptional local and seasonal ingredients from suppliers whose commitment to quality and provenance is second to none. Pre-dinner drinks or aperitifs can be enjoyed in Marconi’s Bar, which has a great selection of local gins and ales alongside a carefully selected wine list. All of this, in one of Cornwall’s most unique, hidden-away corners, makes for an exceptional autumn and winter experience – one that’s sure to help you rest and recharge after a busy summer season.

Discover the benefits of holiday lodge ownership at Tregoad Holiday Park near Looe.

E

nabling the ultimate home-soil holidays that have, in recent years, become so popular, lodge ownership at Tregoad Holiday Park is an attractive option for anybody looking to invest in their future staycations. Be it for a growing family, or for romantic escapes away from the trappings of a busy work schedule, nothing beats knowing that at the end of the week, you can drop it all and head for Cornwall, where your own little piece of lock-up-andleave luxury awaits your arrival. Since acquiring the park in 2020, Waterside Holiday Group have invested heavily in Tregoad, and the team were delighted to be named 'Holiday Park of the Year 2021' in the Cornwall Tourism Awards, but really, it was no surprise. A range of on-site activities and family friendly facilities make staying here a joy, not to mention the incredible foodie offering available at Stargazy Bar & Grill. It also lies in close proximity to Looe, an incredible destination in its own right and providing sea, sun and sand seekers everything they need to enjoy their time by the coast. For lodge owners, the park also provides a fully managed sublet scheme, allowing you to generate an income from your investment during the times that you’re not using it, which will also help to mitigate the costs associated with purchasing a holiday retreat. This includes property upkeep, meaning you can rest assured your lodge will be beautifully

kept, ready for you to move in and enjoy whenever the mood takes you. So, what about the lodges themselves? In fact, Tregoad has a selection of different lodges, with both two and three-bedroom models available. And with some tempting additional options such as hot tubs and being pet friendly, absolutely everybody can come to Cornwall and make lifelong holiday memories. Lots of the lodges have incredible views, too, and for anyone contemplating buying a pre-loved lodge over one that’s brand new, you may be intrigued to know that these start at just £49,995! Perhaps the best part, however, is that if you purchase your holiday home at Tregoad, you won’t pay any site fees for 2022 or 2023 (subject to terms and conditions)! If you’re interested, and would like to know more about lodge ownership at Tregoad, the site team are always happy to extend the invitation to come along for an Experience Day. The perfect opportunity to see in person the luxury lodges and the incredible holiday lifestyle they afford, we highly recommend booking in and discovering for yourself everything that this award-winning Cornish holiday park has to offer.

S

et on a spectacular stretch of coastline on St. Martin’s, one of the stunning isles that makes up the archipelago of Scilly, Karma St. Martin’s lies just a stone’s throw from the water, and feels a world apart from everyday life. A luxurious island hotel, with 30 beautiful bedrooms and suites, at Karma, you can simply settle back and lose yourself in the oceanic vista with a glass of wine to hand. Each of Karma St. Martin’s rooms and suites presents a carefully balanced mix of classic English and contemporary design, with Interior Designer Tina Kirschner bringing in period touches, such as William Morris inspired wallpaper motifs and vintage-style furniture, blending these with luxuriously upholstered beds and sofas that feel decidedly modern. All feature en-suite bathrooms and luxurious bathrobes, with complementary signature toiletries included as standard. And if room service is the order of the evening, no problem – simply grab a menu and pick up the phone! On site you’ll also find the Karma Spa, inviting you to experience both traditional and cutting-edge Asian infused therapies. Relax during a Scilly Detox Salt Experience, or be soothed with a Himalayan Oil & Warm Stone massage, followed by a cathartic ‘healing hands’ manicure. All ingredients used are GMO-free, and the talented

therapists promise to ease you into an authentic state of deep healing, allowing you to depart from your break feeling transformed. For those who find comfort in the finer things, the Library and Wine Lounge provides guests with an ever evolving list of favourites, timeless classics and local histories – specially curated by Ultimate Library. You’ll also receive a card upon arrival for the hotel’s Wine Emotion System, which allows you to explore the world’s finest vintages, one sip at a time. Finally, for those who prefer to get out and into the outdoors, why not first enjoy a leisurely breakfast, before striking out and exploring? Snorkel with seals, explore hidden coves, kayak across to the Eastern Isles, and visit St. Martin’s vineyard. The Karma team will even pack a picnic for you to enjoy on one of the island’s soft beaches! The best part is that, however strenuous your day’s activities, you’ll have the comfort of Karma in which to retreat, where coastal cuisine, fine wines and the prospect of a Scilly sunset await to help you round off the day.

FOODIE

of innovation

THE SPIRIT Since conceptualising the original idea of opening a small distillery during a walk along Rock beach, demand for Angie and George's Cornish Rock Gin has soared.

M

ade from the most natural products, many of which are found right here in Cornwall, along with Cornish spring water, Cornish Rock Gins are all sugar free and maintain a classic dry taste with subtle flavours and undertones. And at a time that the provenance of the food and drink with which we line our cupboards has never been more important, it’s perhaps unsurprising that demand for a true Cornish spirit has only continued to rise. Setting out to produce a gin that was clean and pure, Cornish Rock Gin – at the Rock Distillery – now make eight fabulous gins, all with the freshest and best botanicals possible. More recently, Angie, George and the team have also unveiled a new bottle design, making the presentation of their liquid wares even more of an event. The bottles even match the exotic Rock Gin glasses, which themselves are perfectly designed to enjoy a Rock Gin ‘perfect serve’. But it’s not all about the gin. Cornish Rock Gin have also unveiled a range of rums, for which the sugar cane base comes from the Caribbean, with other ingredients sourced from as close to Cornwall as possible. The base is re-distilled here in the Duchy with the addition of some exciting flavours and now, matching the range of gins, there are eight

fantastic Cornish rums to boot, all made from the purest ingredients and each offering a smooth taste, with flavours such as fresh coconut, vanilla, mango and passionfruit, English cherries, even Cornish saffron! Angie and George are passionate about their products and love to spread the word, with tempting taster shots. “We try to get out there to as many people as possible. So, as well as being an online retailer, we attend many markets and events so that people can come and taste our products at their leisure. Here in Cornwall, you will find us at Bude Market every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. We are in Tintagel (next to the Old Post Office) every Tuesday and Saturday. You can also find us at Falmouth Market on the Moor every Saturday,” explains Angie. “We also have a small retail and tasting space in Port Isaac, plus we are at Port Isaac market every first Sunday of the month. If you can’t get to any of those locations then we also have a small retail shop and tasting station down in the Allen Valley just off the A39.”

We discover how Cornish based digestive health brand, Trivas, can help restore balance to your digestive health.

W

hen you come to think of Cornwall, there are a number of things that likely spring to mind – pasties, rugged coastlines, aggressive seabirds – but innovative digestive health brands are not, traditionally, one of them. Enter Trivas – an exciting new start-up based in Hayle, currently creating luxury food-based supplements to combat digestive health disorders. The company name has Swedish origins, meaning ‘to thrive’, and with two rigorously tested and incredibly popular products designed to boost digestive health and promote wellbeing, it couldn’t be more apt. Trivas’ flagship product, Probiotic Superfoods, is a daily wellness shake with organic fruits and vegetables, Nootropics, key vitamins and minerals, plus billions of gut-friendly bacteria. It has been specially formulated to help those suffering from conditions such as IBS, bloating and acid reflux. Catching up with company founder, Thomas Hanson, we learn that the inspiration for Trivas was born from personal experience: “I’ve had digestive health issues for most of my adult life. Over the years, I’ve been prescribed a huge range of drugs, some of which have helped in the short-term, but none of which had addressed the root cause

of the problem. It was only when I started to research digestive health from a holistic view point – considering the effects of diet and lifestyle – that things really started to change.” Digestive health is certainly a hot topic at the moment. In a recent report by consumer analysts Mintel, it was revealed that a staggering 86% of British adults reported experiencing gastrointestinal issues in the past year. It’s a worrying statistic, but it’s one that Tom is confident can be reversed, if people were given more information about the true cause of these conditions. “Doctors are quick to prescribe medication for digestive issues,” says Tom. “But in my experience, making key dietary and lifestyle changes, whilst incorporating some targeted supplements like probiotics, can dramatically improve and even cure these conditions without the need for medication. “We’re the first luxury wellness brand to make digestive health our number one priority,” continues Tom. “There are plenty of superfood powders out there, but none that have been specifically created for sufferers of digestive disorders. Everything we do from the ground up, is designed to improve digestive health and ultimately, boost performance.”

LEARNING Soar over the water without the need for wind or waves in the safe hands of the E-Foil Cornwall team.

L

to fly

earning to surf on a regular surfboard requires years of practise and even then, the sport remains super difficult and fickle and rides are short. When you’re on an E-Foil however, you can keep going forever – or at least as long as your battery lasts. E-Foil Cornwall is the first and only centre in Cornwall for electric hydrofoiling. Based in the tranquil waters of Looe Bay, E-Foil Cornwall offers the perfect location in which to learn how to E-Foil, not to mention an exciting new way to explore the iconic Cornish coastline. The best part is that anyone can E-Foil! It’s easier than you might think, and the team at E-Foil Cornwall have found that almost anyone can stand up within just half an hour, and that’s without any kind of surfing background! The experienced instructors make sure that all lessons are safe and fun, and most importantly, that you have an unforgettable time. You can choose between three different types of lesson. You can go solo with a one-to-one lesson, or attend as a group and learn together.

The E-foil Experience provides those who have done e-foiling previously the opportunity to explore the stunning Cornish coastline whilst soaring above the waves. With river, island and coastline experiences available, E-foil Experience gives you the chance to see Cornwall from a totally unique perspective. With E-foil and paddleboard instructors Joel and Dennis at the helm, you can rest assured you’re in the safest of hands, whether you’re fresh to the E-foil scene and need a little instruction to get on your feet, or are more practised and looking to explore the waters in the local area (weather dependant) with a guide who knows the perfect spots to make the most of the beautiful Cornish scenery, and the 60 minutes of battery time afforded by an E-foil.

Five years

AND BEYOND Situated in one of the oldest streets in Falmouth, The Grey Lurcher is a dream for those seeking the curious and eclectic.

E

stablished in 2017, you’ll find a curation of conversation pieces and healthcare products as well as seasonal plants and gardenalia in the gorgeous courtyard. And with a continously expanding business it is no surprise that, having taken advantage of the opportunity to move to their current premises during the first lockdown, owner Julie recognised an opportunity to diversify even further. Stock ranges have been extended and brands that fit well under the umbrella of the company’s ethos have come on-board. One such is Made for Life Organics, who produce skincare products that nourish your body both inside and out and have minimal impact upon the planet’s resources. This is very much a line of approach that works well with The Grey Lurcher’s client base as has been borne out by their continued loyalty. Julie says: “We have a lot of support from our local customers, which is absolutely essential in today’s retail sector.” A product that is always a firm favourite are Annie Sloan’s chalk paints, which saw a huge upturn in sales during lockdown. It really lends itself to upcycling furniture and is an easy, no fuss way of exploring your creativity

and producing results that replicate the patina from years of use. The result is both genuine and satisfying to achieve. Cornish Milk Mineral paints are another new addition to the range – a company that produce water-based, non-toxic, nonsolvent, non-chemical, environmentally friendly paints that reflect the colours of the Cornish landscape. Rest assured the shop still stocks homeware lifestyle brands such as Parlane, Grand Illusions and Casa Verde, along with St Mawes Scent Room luxury candles and diffusers, limited-edition printed velvet cushions and scarves from Arcana as well as a small selection of jewellery and various handmade items. For the summer, the store has enjoyed a more coastal living vibe, and as Falmouth becomes more of an all-year round destination, The Grey Lurcher is fully embracing that feeling.

ENGAGING beauty Let us introduce you to Ethica’s five most sought-after engagement rings.

S

ometimes, shopping for the perfect engagement ring can be overwhelming. Once you delve into the world of jewellery there is a lot to get your head around and many decisions to be made. Ethica Diamonds, with their boutique showroom in Truro, are here to guide you through the wonderful world of engagement rings, lab-grown diamonds and mined diamond alternatives. Their awardwinning customer service team are only a phone call or email away, meaning you can feel reassured when making such an important purchase. Their stones are always ‘Kind, not Mined’, meaning the ethics and environmental toll of your stone is one less thing to worry about. But with so many ring designs on their website, it can be hard to know where to start. So, we thought we would introduce you to five of their favourites.

 Evangelin

e

Evangeline Just dreamy. An understated solitaire from the top but anything but ordinary from the side. The setting reveals delicate vines of precious metal, forming a vintage style scroll under each side of the stone. Round lab-grown diamonds add sparkling accents to the setting detail, making this ring truly enchanting.

Natalia Unique, intricate and just so pretty, Natalia features a round brilliant centre and several tiny baguette and round stones either side, forming an art-deco pattern. It can be striking and a statement piece when in a large carat, or dainty and delicate in a smaller one.

Fleur Nadia Flattering and elongating on the hand, oval is the stone shape of today. This delicate band is set with alternating marquise and round lab-grown diamonds, a unique and modern alternative to the traditional shoulder setting. Not on the website yet, this design is brand new and available to order upon request, with a wedding band to match!

Reverie Delicate and vintage, the Reverie is one of Ethica's most romantic rings. The three stones are said to represent the past, present, future and ultimately, eternal love. Reverie features a round brilliant centre and two side pear stones, which can be set in any colour.

Vintage glamour – an oval halo that represents a flower. Incredibly feminine, the oval stone is of course very flattering and the halo of smaller stones emphasises the size of the centre. Set on a plain band for a gorgeous contrast. To find out more about Ethica’s range of engagement rings, be sure to get in touch. Better still, why not arrange an appointment and pay a visit to the showroom?
