ummer’s on its way! I can feel it in the air…which is getting warmer by the day. Our woodlands are carpeted with the most exquisite bluebells, the gorse is shining vibrant yellow with its delicious coconut scent reminding us of the beach days to come, while the cherry blossom falls like confetti on the breeze. Now’s the perfect time to start reconnecting with the outdoors, and with that in mind, Rosie Cattrell has been on an outdoor adventure of her own, catching up with surf and coasteering school owner Chris Brown of Global Boarders (from page 10), to find out how best to make the most of the outdoor playground that is the Cornish coast. In order to have your own Cornish adventure, you’ll want a fabulous place to stay and the Duchy has no shortage of those. From coastal cottages (page 23) to boutique bell tent villages (page 28) and luxury hotels (pages 31 and 37) to the hidden tropical paradise that is the Isles of Scilly (page 38), you’ll be spoiled for choice and could be sipping a glass of something cold overlooking the ocean in no time at all… and the best bit is, you don’t even need a passport! We have also, once again, partnered with award-winning estate agents Rohrs and Rowe (page 46) to bring you the most prestigious homes on the market as we know that once you visit, you’ll never want to leave! ...happy reading!

o step outside our front door and feel the warm promise of spring on our skin as the days grow lighter and the sun more familiar is to remember the joy of living in the paradise that many of us are lucky enough to call home. Painted in greens, blues and sandy golds, and edged with cliffs embellished with heath and thrift overlooking the Atlantic ocean, Cornwall not only makes for a wonderfully inspiring place to be, but holds the key to real adventure in what we consider to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. In the spirit of immersing ourselves in the watery wilds of Cornwall this spring and summer, we thought it best to get an insight from someone who not only harbours a passion for the thrill of the Cornish coast, but has made a career of 17 years from it. From nurturing surf newbies on their first waves at Praa Sands and Gwithian Towans and coaching advanced salt-water thrill seekers, to exploring the coastline on a coasteering exploration around Mousehole, Chris Brown is a man at the very heart of outdoor adventure. Leading a team of over 12 surf and coasteering coaches, Chris is at the centre of a company that invites all to seek their very own outdoor adventure; Global Boarders.

“My first memories of the outdoors were spent on the crowded beaches of Southendon-Sea,” reminisces Chris. “Like many families from the southeast, Cornwall was a yearly family holiday destination and I recall catching my first waves at Gwithian on a partially snapped polystyrene bodyboard in the mid 90s. My parents made the brave move to leave Essex and relocate to Cornwall. Ever since then I’ve been drawn to the energy and natural beauty that can only be experienced in the great outdoors. As a first-generation surfer in my family, it took until the age of 16 before I learnt how to surf and two years later, whilst balancing education, I qualified as a lifeguard and surf coach and never looked back. In 2005 Global Boarders was formed and 17 years later my passion to coach surfing has never been stronger.” Originally a mobile surf school run by Chris and his best friend Steve, Global Boarders’ original ethos was to travel Cornwall’s coastline in the search of the best waves for their clients to surf, operating out of a van with surfboards strapped to the roof. “We did this all year round and it was a common site to see us in the winter months battling the Cornish weather whilst wrestling the surfboards on and off the roof,” explains Chris. “We realised this was where our passion lay, and 17 years later best friends became business partners and we’ve grown the business to proudly have beach front bases at two of Cornwall’s best surfing beaches; Gwithian and Praa Sands.”

DISCOVER MORE For the ocean adventurers among you, MAD Watersports may well have just what you need for your next salt-water session. From paddleboards and surf boards to kayaks, windsurfs and wetsuits, you’re sure to find what you need at www.madwatersports.co.uk.

 ABOVE On the hunt for adventure  BELOW An expedition below the cliffs and into the sea

Open year round, Chris and Steve’s early roots are still embraced, and Global Boarders remains one of the only surf schools in Cornwall who proudly stay open all through the winter to embrace the elements with their brave customers. Having managed and coached the GB National Surf Team from 2015 to 2019, Chris found himself in the driving seat of some incredible opportunities that would lead him around the world to the shores of California, The Azores and Japan. On his return, Chris’ newfound skills and experience found their place within the Global Boarders team at the head of an incredible group of hand-picked instructors and guides, each chosen for their individual skills and experiences: “My role as head coach allows me to proudly lead a team of wonderful coaches and great friends in delivering two amazing activities in surfing and coasteering across some of the most spectacular locations in Cornwall. We believe that we have the best team of instructors and guides possible, and to provide an unrivalled customer service we have hand-picked each individual to fit a certain roll within our coaching team. Ultimately, whether you’re local or just paying a visit, our aim is to leave you with a lasting memory of our special county and ensure it’s one of the highlights of your holiday.” From primary school teachers who work with the kid’s groups during the school holidays, to more senior coaches who support some of Global Boarders older customers, many of the team have been around for ten or more seasons, so they really know what they’re doing! What’s more, Chris and his team see many budding adventure seekers return to them year after year with the knowledge that the coach they’ve had previously is more than likely

there to coach them again: “We find that most return customers when booking their session will ask whether they can be taught by the coach or guide they had during their previous session. As a company, we put great emphasis on retaining our staff, with many being with us for at least five years, so the customer and coach relationships can progress with many students working with the same coach for years. We also renew our equipment every two years, which means our customers always enjoy warm wetsuits and a great selection of beginner and advanced surfboards.” Striving to be a fully inclusive operator for outdoor activities, and with a desire to promote the endless health and wellbeing benefits of being in the Cornish sea, Global Boarders are the lead surf school provider in Cornwall for working with local schools, encouraging local children to access the incredible outdoor environment that awaits them whilst promoting ocean safety and awareness. Not only this, the team are also proud to run a not-for-profit surf club for local children from beginner to elite level, many of which have gone on to represent England at international events. Their work with the military charity Surf Action and the Wahine Project UK (a year-round initiative for young girls to learn how to surf, look after the ocean, each other and themselves) only goes to show how dedicated Chris and the team are to the local community and the art of outdoor adventure.

magine owning your very own five-star luxury holiday retreat on Cornwall’s magnificent north-west coast. Now imagine your holiday retreat generating a potential income of up to £21,000. Sound too good to be true? Well, it’s not with Gwel an Mor’s designer eco-lodges. Situated just a 15-minute walk from the sandy shores of Portreath Beach, Gwel an Mor is the jewel in Cornwall’s coastal crown. The cobbled streets of picturesque St Ives are just a stone’s throw away, as is Cornwall’s small but perfectly formed capital city, Truro. And of course there are beaches aplenty; some of the county’s finest stretches of sand are just a short drive away, including Godrevy, Porthtowan and Fistral. However, with resort facilities such as archery, tennis, golf, fishing and a wellbeing spa, it’s a wonder how owners manage to peel themselves away. Gwel an Mor’s eco-lodges are no less impressive. Exquisitely designed, each stunning retreat boasts a generous array of state-of-the-art designer features, from atmospheric mood lighting, woodburners

and instantaneous hot-water taps, to sliding doors onto a sun deck and a plasma TV at the foot of the bath. The pièce de résistance has to be the outdoor hot tub – the perfect spot to luxuriate under a starry sky. The benefits of owners letting their lodge are undeniable. Open 52 weeks a year, just 32 letting breaks can cover running costs, letting management fees, housekeeping services, hot tub cleans and generate a potential income of £21,000. The cherry on top? A fully managed premier letting service from Gwel an Mor itself. It’s safe to say Gwel an Mor’s five-star retreat is an extremely tempting option for those who crave the luxury holiday lifestyle. Close to Cornwall’s main transport links, the location boasts the best of both worlds, ensuring owners and guests alike can get there easily, while still feeling a million miles away from day-to-day life.

For those who like to lace up their boots and get outside, the coastline between Atlantic Coast and the fishing village of Portreath is simply spectacular, with plenty of breathtaking spots at which to stop and take in the view. Why not pack a picnic for the walk? With Blue Flag beaches, fishing boat trips and plenty of leisure facilities all within easy access by car, and with the resort’s friendly team, fabulous location and immaculate facilities, Atlantic Coast Holiday Park has the kind of appeal that makes visitors want to return again and again to relive the magic of a truly memorable escape. Tens of thousands of people enjoy the freedom of leisure home ownership in Britain and at Atlantic Coast, your home will be yours to enjoy throughout the year whenever the park is open, for both short breaks and longer stays. There’s no need to book ahead either, and all your home comforts will be ready and waiting, just the way you like them. Imagine a fun-filled summer escape together, with the place all to yourself to spend some quality time with your loved ones in style and comfort. So, what can you expect from the lodges available at Atlantic Coast? Thanks to strong relationships with every major caravan manufacturer, Coastdale Parks – of which

Atlantic Coast is a member – can supply any caravan with any specification, subject to the size and aesthetics of each individual pitch. This means that whether you’re simply in need of a place to hang your hat after a day exploring the coast, or a luxury base with state-of-the-art fixtures, from hot tubs to home entertainment, whenever you decide to pack the car and head for the coast, you can relax as soon as you arrive, comfortable in the knowledge that everything is laid out just the way you like it. What’s more, if you’re thinking of sub-letting your lodge – another perk of ownership at Atlantic Coast – then the ability to tailor your accommodation to your guests’ needs is a real advantage. By doing so, you can encourage maximum bookings among potential holiday guests, which means that even when you’re not using it, you’ll still be making the most of your investment. To put it quite simply, whether you’re hoping to capitalise on Cornwall’s growing staycation market with a lodge in one of the county’s most highly coveted holiday destinations, or are looking to invest in your family’s future holidays, then the lodges and location that define Atlantic Coast Holiday Park come highly recommended.

ornwall is home to an array of beautiful places to stay, but you will not find a more unique property than The Bodmin Jail Hotel. This boutique hotel is nestled in Bodmin, not far from the famous Moor, and was built by Napoleonic prisoners in 1779 and used as a prison until 1927, when it was decommissioned. The jail then fell into disrepair, until it was bought by its current owner who could see the wonderful potential of the space, which has been sensitively restored and many of the original features retained. Three prison cells have been knocked together and are now stylish bedrooms, with original doors and bars on the windows. The original prison layout was ideal for achieving an industrial chic look with four floors of steel exoskeleton and a metal landing underneath a glazed roof that brings in lots of natural light. Guests checking into The Bodmin Jail Hotel can now expect a hotel that retains and enhances a unique atmosphere and sense of history. If fine dining makes your holiday, then The Chapel Restaurant delivers on that front. This fabulous restaurant offers a seasonal à la carte menu and the daily changing table d'hôte. Carefully curated from locally sourced ingredients, Head Chef

Dane Watkins (formerly of The Headland Hotel) creates a superb dining experience with dishes such as seared scallops, pan friend turbot and Ruby Red beef fillet. Every morning the team will serve you a hearty Cornish breakfast to prepare you for your day. The Bodmin Jail Hotel is to be found in the heart of Cornwall, and with both coasts accessible in 20 minutes it is an ideal base for both a coastal and country adventure. You can head north and experience the wild waves of Polzeath, a mecca for surfers, or go to the south coast for sheltered coves, which are perfect for paddle boarding and sailing. Active guests can hire bikes to cycle the 18-mile trail to Padstow or head up to Bodmin Moor, one of the most dramatic places to explore in Cornwall. The on-site Bodmin Jail Attraction is another must-do and has an immersive ‘Dark Walk’ experience, which shows colourful characters from Cornwall’s past, who were inmates in the former jail. After exploring the sites around Cornwall, you might wish to head to the hotel’s Champagne Bar for bubbles or afternoon tea, the perfect setting for a spot of relaxation.

ow under the captaincy of brother and sister, Giles and Serena Eustice, Trevaskis Farm is famed for its restaurant, for offering families the chance to immerse themselves in the ‘farm park’ experience, and now, for its on-site farm shop. At the core of the business is a determination to achieve food yards, not miles, but it goes deeper than that. Via the farm shop and butcher’s counter, Trevaskis Farm provides visitors with a viable alternative to the supermarket, reconnecting them with food that has, in many cases, been growing only minutes before purchase. There is a refined focus on ‘local’, too, not only in terms of the produce on the shelves, nor the meat on the butcher’s counter, but in terms of the money spent here and ensuring it’s retained within the local economy. “We specialise in what we do really well,” says Giles, talking about the 100-plus various crops that are grown on-site. “But we’re really keen to share that wealth out through to our producers and let them do what they do really well, too.” On the butcher’s counter, which is led by longtime Head Butcher and master of his craft, Peter Davis, Giles explains that the approach is very much the same as that of the wider farm; to remove the disconnected relationship that, as a society, we have tended towards in recent decades. “Our butchery is very traditional, the kind of which is increasingly rare nowadays. Here, you’ll see meat in its true splendour, cuts on the bone, and what we want to encourage is for visitors to communicate with the friendly

team behind the counter and learn about the products they’re buying. If you come in and talk to us, chat through what you want to do, you’ll be amazed at what you can learn. It’s not an intimidating environment here.” On the counter, you’ll find the native South Devon Breed beef – a product that has a huge following and on which Trevaskis Farm has been able to hang its hat. You'll also find British Lop pork, a rare breed for whom Giles chairs the society that’s dedicated to protecting its lineage. In fact, the Trevaskis drove goes back in the family for generations, and anybody who’s tried it, be it in the restaurant or from the butcher’s counter, will understand why it’s garnered such a following among discerning Cornish foodies! In short, Trevaskis Farm is the embodiment of what more and more families have been searching for in recent times – a way in which to shop sustainably, affordably and, perhaps most importantly, in a way that supports the farmers, producers and makers that underpin Cornwall’s culinary spirit.

R

un by husband-and-wife team Andy and Margaret Sutherland, always a good indicator in our experience of a good hostelry, the Top House Inn is a ‘must-visit’ when you find yourself on the Lizard peninsula this summer. Having taken over the tenancy quite recently they bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience from time spent running a successful holiday business in the south of France. This in itself suggests that there must be something special about this area to draw a couple from one of the most idyllic places on the planet. Grounded and bearing witness to the history of this unique part of the UK, the inn is within easy reach of some of Cornwall’s most gorgeous beaches along with places such as Poltesco, Kynance, Goonhilly and the Lizard Lighthouse. There’s so much to do in this relatively small area that you’ll want to delay your return home for a long time. Which means you’ll need to stay somewhere that is comfortable and welcoming allowing you to be ready for the following day’s adventuring. So, with this in mind we can think of no better recommendation than the Top House Inn from which to base your exploration. There are eight luxurious rooms to choose from, all of which have been recently renovated to the highest standard, replete with en-suite facilities and super-fast Wi-Fi, not to mention peace and quiet being set to the side of the pub. Whether visiting for the day or staying for a while, you're sure to be met with the warmest of welcomes.

The inn itself offers a great selection of local beers and lagers as well as guest ales. This is complemented by a superb à la carte menu incorporating freshly sourced local produce, with an emphasis placed on fish and seafood, all prepared by Head Chef Alex. A brand-new feature not to be missed is the Sutherland’s Vintage Tea Room. Recalling an era when tea was regarded as an important ritual to be enjoyed at leisure, their tea room features genuine vintage crockery. Margaret will be offering a Cornish cream tea made with fresh local products. Finally, the Top House Inn regularly hosts live music and entertainment, from a saxophonist playing at Sunday lunch to Cornish folk evenings and disco nights with popular local artists playing guitar and singing. In the midst of a walkers’ paradise, and with sites like the lavender farms nearby, you couldn't find a better spot for outdoor activities. We suggest that, if your destination is Cornwall, you put yourself in the safe hands of Andy and Margaret, and book direct with the Top House Inn.

A WORLD OF

its own T

he Isles of Scilly are just 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall and are officially recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are five inhabited islands and over a hundred smaller ones. One of the islands, St Agnes, is the most southerly point in Britain and all of the islands are gently warmed in the currents of the Gulf Stream. In fact, the Isles of Scilly are the first place that spring arrives in the UK. The islands are fringed with sandy beaches; white sands with hardly a footprint on them and dazzlingly blue seas. Turn inland and you’ll find each one criss-crossed with miles of trails and paths. Depending on the island you find yourself on you can explore the footpaths by bike or horse. You might take a guided nature walk or just ramble on your own, taking a gentle stroll from beach to artisan café to enjoy slow cooked, local food. You might just watch grey seals playing in the crystal-clear ocean. Every single moment is one for you to delight in. Just over one hundred years ago, the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company established a regular ferry link between the islands and

Penzance on the mainland. In the beginning most of the traffic was made up of islanders on business or early flowers and vegetables being transported to the mainland. By the 70s, the Isles of Scilly had become a significant holiday destination; Harold Wilson, the Prime Minister, had a summer home here. People from Cornwall and Devon went every year on their annual holiday. Holidaymakers would book the same week or two for the following year even as they left the islands to return home. If you go back to visit the Scillies once, so they say, you will return every year. Today, the islands are just as beautiful as they ever were. In fact, their wild and unspoilt beauty is now even rarer and so even more appreciated, but the Isles of Scilly haven't been untouched by the passage of time and now the islands can offer almost everything that a holiday maker could wish for, but in their own rugged and special way and surrounded by stunning natural beauty. The inter-island boats will take you from one island to another, but that journey is much more exciting than any normal taxi or bus ride. Island hopping becomes a pleasure in itself with the captain and crew pointing out birds and wildlife as well as some of the historic sites. If you wish to cross the water under your own steam, paddle boarding and kayaking have become popular and can be hired from a number of places. Pull on a wetsuit and you can slip under the water and dive with the seals, a truly memorable and heart-warming experience.

If all that activity and fresh air has given you an appetite or a thirst, the islands have a number of restaurants and artisan cafés where you can enjoy the freshest possible seafood and slow cooked, locally sourced delights. You might choose to visit the local vineyard or treat yourself to a gin school experience where you will develop your own gin recipe. Whether you visit for the day or stay a little longer, you will never forget your time on the Isles of Scilly. The island life becomes a part of you and you become a part of the islands' story. However you choose to travel to the islands, by Skybus from Land’s End, Newquay or Exeter airport; or sail on the Scillionian from Penzance, the journey will surely be as memorable as the destination.

Pioneers in the world of responsible gemstones, Ethica Diamonds are at the forefront of guilt-free jewels.

S

et in the heart of Cornwall’s city of Truro is a small boutique jewellery showroom specialising in lab-grown diamonds and the highest quality moissanite jewellery. Founded in 2010 with sustainability at its core, Ethica Diamonds has gone onto become the south west’s leading specialist of sustainable fine jewellery set with lab-grown alternatives to mined diamonds, winning multiple awards for their products and customer service, for which they have five stars. Not only is their stunning range of fine jewellery better for the environment, each piece is of the highest possible quality, made in the UK and is still more affordable than most jewellery found on the high-street. While many will pay a visit with a certain style in mind, it’s not unusual to fall in love with something completely different. So, although a visit in person is not necessary (virtual appointments are also a possibility), booking a showroom appointment is certainly worth indulging in if you can! Whilst visiting the showroom, you’ll have the chance to compare the two brilliant stones Ethica offers in place of mined diamonds; the Ethica Diamond, which is the only lab diamond infused moissanite available that is independently certified using international diamond grading

standards, or the sustainably sourced, pure lab-grown diamonds grown using green, renewable energy. If you like the idea of designing your very own bespoke piece of jewellery, or you’d like Ethica to design a piece especially for you based on other designs you love, then the team can help you navigate this process too. The helpful team at Ethica can walk you through the process and turn what may seem like a daunting task into a hassle-free and straightforward prospect. If you’re wanting to propose and go engagement ring shopping together as a couple, visiting Ethica Diamonds in Truro is a romantic, memorable experience. Imagine spending the day trying on beautiful, dreamy engagement rings followed by a gorgeous lunch or dinner in a local independent Cornish café or pub? What’s more, Ethica are offering £150 towards your order when you visit them for a showroom appointment, just quote 'Cornwall Living' when you pop in!

Whether you have a home in Cornwall that you use yourself or you offer to others, there’s a way you can support a much-loved local charity.

E

ver wondered how you can give back to the Cornish community that offers you such a warm a welcome when you visit? Well, next time you’re updating your holiday home think of donating your preloved items to Cornwall Hospice Care. The charity cares for and supports terminally ill adults and their families during the most difficult of times at its two hospices – St Julia’s in Hayle and Mount Edgcumbe in St Austell – and through its community service projects. One of the ways the charity raises funds is by selling on donated furniture through its network of charity shops across the county. Donating that sun-faded sofa or last season’s rug will help fund vital end-of-life and bereavement services for the community of Cornwall. You’ll also be helping to protect the area by finding new homes for the dining table that your family has outgrown or the lamp that doesn’t match the new theme, rather than sending them to landfill. The charity offers a free collection service that you can book online. Donations just need to be in a good enough condition to sell on and have any required fire safety labels. Without these the charity can’t legally sell them and would have to pay to dispose of the items.

So, next time you’re taking in the beauty of the rugged Cornish coastline, exploring the county’s rich history or eating fresh scones (jam first of course!), just remember what you can do to support the local community that calls Cornwall home. Cornwall Hospice Care has furniture shops in Penryn, Truro, St Austell and Wadebridge and will come and collect the donated items from your holiday home. Just pop online and book your collection in advance. They are also great places to browse if you are looking for a quirky gift or to upcycle any furniture for your own use.
