FITTING PROCESS

Many of our staff are passionate about trail running. We have team members from across the country entered into a variety of races every year, including half marathons, vertical kilometres and 100 milers. We value their skills and invest in their knowledge, both on-the-hill and in-store with our SUREfit programme. Working closely with our brands, we operate on-thehill events in the Lake District and North Wales, where staff demo the latest models and clock some serious distance, whatever the weather. Initial discussion: We listen carefully to your needs, including your intended activities and any existing foot problems that may affect your choice.

SUREfit is our in-store fitting service. Developed over many years, it is both a way of fitting and a system of training. From seminars and coursework to brand training and product testing, the SUREfit programme ensures Ellis Brigham staff have the skills and knowledge needed to help you find the best product for your needs. We will discuss your intended activities and analyse your feet to help select the optimal shoes for your needs.

Breaking in: Footwear moulds over time, which is the final step to getting that perfect fit. We encourage you to wear your new shoes inside at home before hitting the trail, and if there are any problems we are always here to help.

Foot analysis: Measuring for size is only the start; we observe all parts of the foot to get a detailed understanding of their shape and volume. We also look at your biomechanics and test for any signs of instability, including over-pronation or over-supination. Trying on: Putting together our discussion and observations, we make recommendations from our wide range of quality running shoes. We check the fit, making sure there are no signs of discomfort, and offering effective solutions to support and stabilise your feet. Adjustments: Our expert staff are adept at making adjustments to the fit, using lacing techniques and alternative footbeds to fine-tune the comfort.

Footbeds: By supporting the arch, footbeds are able to reduce over-pronation or oversupination. This can alleviate discomfort and fatigue, helping you focus on the scenery rather than your feet! We offer a range of insoles, all of which can dramatically improve comfort and stability inside the shoe. Footbeds can be found on page 17.

DROP The height differential (in mm) between the heel and forefoot. Drops of 8-6mm feel great for most runners. Drops of 4mm and below may encourage a more natural gait cycle, but you should transition slowly if unfamiliar with low drop shoes. FAST LEARNERS Every spring, staff from Ellis Brigham stores around the country gather in North Wales for a unique trail running experience. At the event in May 2019, staff ran 30km over two days, experiencing an array of footwear, clothing and equipment in some classic North Wales conditions!

Day 1 The group rose early and got ready to demo as many of the latest trail running shoes as possible. We were joined by all our key trail running partners: Inov-8, Salomon, La Sportiva and Hoka One One, along with Ultimate Direction packs. Splitting into 4 groups, each group began the day with a different footwear brand. Wearing one pair of trail running shoes, and with a different pair packed into their running vests, each group ran their first 5k. Halfway through the run, they swapped shoes to test the second model. And then the groups rotated so that by the end of the day, each group had tested 8 pairs of footwear from the 4 brands, across 4 different runs. A lot of running – a lot of footwear – a lot of fun! “The process of having 4 different brands all with test kit and being able to test the products side by side was very helpful and more useful than just singular brands.” The varied landscapes around the Llanberis Pass and Capel Curig were perfect for testing a variety of models. Climbing steeply up the slopes behind the hut and following Afon Dudodyn into the cwm beneath Elidir Fawr, shoes had to cope with gritty, rocky tracks and tussocky heather. Running along the slate mine tracks gave gravel and hard terrain, with fast, sweeping downhills. Over at Capel Curig, forest tracks gave way to open hillside for a great all terrain test. Leaving personal fit preferences to one side, you got a sense of the grip, cushioning, support and agility of each model.

“It was great to get staff together using the products. Everyone should take a great deal from the couple of days.” Day 2 This time staff chose their favourite pair of shoes, with a remarkably even split between brands and models. We headed across to Llanberis, and went on a very wet and windy run over Moel Eilio, Foel Gron and Foel Goch. This rolling ridgeline has some steep sections, but plenty of very runnable terrain, and a fantastic fast descent to complete the circuit. There’s nothing like sharing the hills with likeminded, enthusiastic people! “Brilliant event, well organised, same again!”

Could you introduce yourself; Hi, I’m Brian n! I’m an ultra and mountain runner based in Glasgow, Scotland and I work as a freelance tou ur guide. I first went for a plod back in 2015 and haven’t stopped since really. Over the past few years, I’’ve taken it more seriously, training to be a much bette er runner with lots of ambitions for the future! How did you get into running? Back in 2015 5, I went through quite a radical lifestyle change. I quit smoking and stopped going out drinking g everyy weekend and instead decided it was a grand idea to go and run the 3 Peaks Challenge with my Stepdad. At the time I was nowhere near fit enough an nd I didn’t complete it; we got very lost - and not just on the mountains! Fast forward a few years and I’v ve trained well enough to win my first ultramaratho on [the Deeside Way D33]. So, I got into

What are your best race results? In 2019, I won the Deeside Way 33 Ultra Marathon in 3 hours 42 minutes and I was 2nd in the Ambleside 60km in 6 hours 43. SO WHY DO I NEED A RUNNING VEST?

Ellis Brigham’s Trail Running Guru Martin Bell gives us the inside track on this essential piece of trail running kit.

Over the past few years, running vests have become much more popular. They’re ideal for so many occasions, carrying extra gear during events and races, long training runs and sometimes even on shorter runs. Running vests hug the body much better when running than a conventional pack, they don’t bounce about, and you hardly notice you’re wearing one. When using a running vest, you want everything you think you’ll use at the front of the vest. With most vests, you can fit two 500ml soft flasks at the front. You don’t need to take the soft flasks out to drink; they’re designed to stay in the pocket. Soft flasks for me win over a bladder for the following reasons: they’re easy to drink from, you can see/feel how much liquid you have in them and you can refill them without having to take the vest off. As well as the soft flasks it’s good to carry a collapsible cup/mug, a Sea to Summit X Mug is ideal as you can put coffee in it and fill it with food (not at the same time!). page 38

You get various pockets made with a stretchy material at the front of the vest; these pockets can carry a LOT more than you’d think they can. This is where you want to carry your food, hat and gloves – basically anything you think you will use. Also, at the front of certain running vests are loops that you can attach your collapsible running poles through. Again, it’s easier to access if it’s at the front. In the larger rear pocket, you can carry all the gear that you know you should take, but might not need to use. A good tip with running vests is to put the gear that is going into the main back pocket, into a dry bag. This will obviously keep everything dry if it’s raining but also dry from sweat on a hot sunny day. When sizing for a running vest, be sure you have some adjustment spare with the straps; try not to be at either extreme, you want to be able to make slight adjustments when needed. The vest will fit differently when wearing a waterproof jacket compared to just a t-shirt!

Key Skills Every Trail Runner Needs For many people, the appeal of trail running is the simplicity and accessibility of running, combined with the benefits of time spent in nature. And it’s true – you don’t need much in the way of equipment or skills to get outside on your first trail run. But the sport of trail running should come with a warning – it’s addictive! Newcomers are soon wondering how to run further, harder or wilder. Keri Wallace, trail running guide and Co-Director of Girls on Hills (supported by Ellis Brigham Mountain Sports), describes the key skills trail runners need to take that all-important step into the unknown.

ROUTE PLANNING Most people run the same trails over and over again because they are nearby or fear they will get lost on an unfamiliar route. But the best way to inject some excitement into your trail running, and take it to the next level is to run new trails and explore more! For this, you will need to hone your route-planning skills. Start with map-familiarisation and shorter forays out of your comfort zone. Set yourself manageable goals and let someone know where you’re going. Planning and visualising ‘landmarks’ (tick-off features) along your journey is the first step in navigating your new route. NAVIGATION The list of GPS watches and smartphone apps for navigation is long indeed. But just carrying one of these devices is not sufficient. Whatever you decide to use, make sure you know how to use it properly out on the trail (understand the display, functions and menus). Also, make sure the battery life is enough for your planned adventure. If you’re going to be running in the mountains or a remote location, make sure you also carry a map and compass (and know how to use them). Learning some simple navigation skills will keep you on track…

UNDERSTANDING THE WEATHER Never underestimate the importance of weather on how you’ll feel and how long your run will take you. On a short run it’s okay to get a bit wet, but on long or remote adventures, take every effort to stay dry (put your waterproofs on early). Once you’re wet, you rarely dry-out in the UK! The ambient temperature doesn’t need to be especially cold for you to get into trouble, and the combination of wind and rain is your worst enemy. A strong headwind will make your run feel much harder than it is (and so it will take you longer), and low visibility will mean more selfnavigation – which will also slow you up! Always have the worst-case scenario forecast in mind when you’re packing your vest. PACKING AND CARRYING Running is no fun with an overly heavy bag or vest. It is wise, however, to be cautious and take a bit more than you need when you’re setting out on your first adventure-run. The answer to this conundrum is to take the lightest and most ‘packable’ gear you can find, without compromising on safety. Always take waterproofs (jacket and trousers), and a small first aid kit. Keep your mobile phone dry using a reputable case or dry bag. When it comes to keeping warm, you’ll need to learn what layering system works for you through a process of trial-and-error, as everyone is different. You’ll need a vest or running pack that has enough volume for all the things you need, and that feels comfy (try on a range of packs in-store if you can).When packing, make sure that the things you’ll be reaching for regularly are easily accessible, so that you can do less ‘faffing’ and more running!

BASIC FIRST AID Trail running is often a solo activity, so you need to be able to look after yourself and get back to safety if you need medical attention. Thankfully most runningrelated ailments are preventable, such as blisters, chaffing, low-blood sugar and hypothermia, but of course accidents happen. Knowing how to bandage a strain or sprain, and how to stem a bleed is useful, as these are the most likely outcomes of a slip or fall. The more remote your trail running activities, the more important emergency first aid becomes. It is useful to recognise early signs of hypo- and hyperthermia/heat exhaustion, as well as how to do CPR (on passers-by or other runners). If you’re heading into the mountains, make sure you know when and how to call mountain rescue (and protect your mobile phone’s battery and integrity in case you need to make that all-important call). CHOOSING THE CORRECT FOOTWEAR Selecting the right trail shoe for your run can be makeor-break. Choose a shoe with the grip, support and cushioning needed (or not needed) for the terrain on your chosen route. It can be almost impossible to run in very muddy conditions if your shoes don’t have big enough lugs. Equally, shoes with great grip and no cushioning might leave you feeling sore after a long run on a hard-packed trail. Durability is also important for racing versus training runs. Ultimately you need to know what terrain and conditions to expect underfoot, as well as what you find comfortable, and this takes experience. But underestimating the importance of footwear from the outset is to sell yourself short on the trail.
