ICE AXES BUYING GUIDE

In winter the British mountains take on an alpine character, becoming both more beautiful and potentially more dangerous. When there’s snow on the hills and ice clogging the gullies it is essential to take the right ice tools for your chosen route. Choosing the right axe isn’t always straightforward though - there’s a huge variety of shapes and sizes available, and each is designed for a slightly different purpose. This buying guide highlights the features and benefits of walking, alpine and technical axes.

WALKING ICE AXES

TECHNICAL ICE AXES

For Munro bagging, Welsh or Lake District winter hills, alpine glacier crossings and non-technical snow ascents, the simple straight shafted walking axe is a good choice. Walking axes are typically 50 to 70cm long. Broadly speaking, the taller you are the longer your ice axe should be. However beware of going too long as it may become unwieldy, particularly when self arresting. Also consider that you should always be holding your walking axe in the uphill hand. The greater the slope angle the harder it becomes to plunge a long shafted axe in the slope above you.

Fully curved with steep pick angles and protective lower hand rests, the modern technical axe will make any winter climb easier. The curved shaft clears obstacles and presents the pick to the ice at an ideal angle for stable placements. The standard approach is to carry one adze and one hammer. The adze allows you to scrape rime away from cracks or other potential protection placements, or excavate an ice axe belay or bollard. The hammer is there to bash pitons into thin cracks, or to ensure that hex and nut placements are as stable as they can be. With this combination you will be prepared for pretty much any Scottish winter climb of any grade, though they will really be in their element in the mid to high grades (say III to VII).

ALPINE ICE AXES There is a broad spectrum of mountaineering that lies between snowy walking and full on technical climbing; think Scottish winter mountaineering up to grade II or III or alpine routes to around AD. The design combines a straight lower shaft (to facilitate plunging) and a slightly curved upper shaft (giving an easier swing with better clearance). These axes tend to be 55 to 65cm long. The slightly shorter length allows for a more comfortable and accurate swing when used in climbing mode. However they are still comfortable to carry and use in walking mode. For extra adaptability across a range of walking, mountaineering and low to mid-grade climbing routes, it is possible to get both adze and hammer versions of the axe.

OFFSET HANDLE AXES Dedicated to the art of steep and highly technical ice, mixed and dry-tooling climbs, the latest generation of top end tools has settled around the use of offset handles. The handle is designed to be more ergonomic with a more comfortable wrist position and increased stability on skittish pick placements and shallow hooks. These axes are specifically intended to be used ‘leashless’, leaving hands free to exploit the upper handrest and match up on one axe if needed. These top end axes are always used as a pair, usually with minimal hammer set ups rather than with a full size adze and hammer.

Ice Axe Standards and Ratings The CEN standard for ice tools is EN13089:2015. This standard has two categories, based on the strength of the shaft and pick. The category should be clearly marked on the shaft of the tool. B: Basic. These are basic tools with the minimum necessary strengths for pick and shaft. If you’re heading above the snowline this winter, crampons will be an integral part of your kit. Worn by mountaineers and winter hill walkers, crampons fit the soles of specially-designed boots to give secure traction on ice and hard-packed snow. Available in a range of designs for different uses, it is essential that you select your crampons carefully; they need to be fully compatible with the boots they are fitted to so they work correctly.

ANTI-BALLING PLATES Anti-balling or 'antibot' plates are designed to prevent snow collecting and compacting in the bases of the crampon - a dangerous situation should it arise. Easily replaceable, almost all crampons come with a pair included.

LINKING BAR The metal bar joins the front and rear plates: this may be stiff or flexible, depending on the kind of boot they're designed to fit. The linking bar also allows sizing adjustment. Bars are easily replaced or changed according to size requirements.

POINTS These are the spiked teeth that bite into the snow and ice. Most crampon points are made from steel due to its strength, though some lightweight styles for less aggressive use (e.g. ski touring) are made from aluminium, making them easy to carry.

CRAMPON BINDING SYSTEM The strapping or binding system is what secures the crampon to the boot, and there are three different types: strap-on (C1), hybrid (C2), or step-in (C3). • Strap-on crampons use a toe basket/cage and a binding strap to wrap and secure the boot • Hybrid crampons have a toe basket/cage and heel clip for a very secure fit • Step-in crampons have either a toe clip or bail and a heel clip. These give the closest fit and only fit B3 boots

CRAMPON RATINGS EXPLAINED A crampon’s ‘C rating’ relates most directly to the binding - or the way it attaches to the boot. It is an indication of what boot a crampon binding will fit, regardless of the crampon's spike configuration. Note that some crampons have a modular binding system, allowing them to cover more than one crampon rating.

C3 CRAMPONS Suitable for: Ice climbing, technical mountaineering Compatible with: B3 boots only C3 crampons combine a plastic heel lever and metal toe bar. This step-in system gives a really solid fit but will only work with full B3 boots. Usually, a C3 binding is found on bigger, badder 12 or 14 point crampons that offer precise performance on steep ice or highly technical mixed routes. Very aggressive vertical front points give the best penetration on hard ice. Top-end crampons for top-end boots.

C2 CRAMPONS Suitable for: Technical winter scrambles, winter climbing, alpinism Compatible with: B2 & B3 boots C2 crampons use a plastic heel lever and a flexible toe cradle. This system will give a secure binding to B2 or B3 boots. Crampons tend to be mid-profile with longer secondary spikes and sharper front points. These are the 12 point all-rounders that are easy enough to walk in but still climb hard when called on. Excellent for winter climbing and alpinism.

C1 CRAMPONS Suitable for: UK winter hillwalking, glacier traverses Compatible with: B1, B2, & B3 boots C1 crampons have a webbing tape tether that pulls flexible cradles around the heel and toe to create a secure binding. This system allows good flex and is suitable for fitting to B1, B2 or B3 boots. It is usually found on low profile 10 point crampons with less aggressive points. They are ideal for winter walking or glacier traverses.

SEVEN UK WINTER MOUNTAIN WALKS While you do need a few more specific pieces of kit for winter walks, as well as the knowledge on how to use them, it’s important to remember that winter doesn’t have to stop you. In fact, it can open up a whole world of possibilities: chances are you’ll never look back. We’ve taken it upon ourselves to compile a list of some great winter walking areas from around the UK to help get you started.

THE PYG TRACK, SNOWDON, NORTH WALES Parking: Pen-y-Pass Car Park, LL55 4NU Why it’s great: If you’re lucky you’ll get hard-packed snow from start to finish and spectacular mountain views with an epic alpine feel. Things to consider: If the weather turns, this can become a serious mountain walk with disorientating visibility, high winds and very low temperatures. Check the forecast, always carry full winter kit including ice axe and crampons, a fully charged phone plus map & compass (with knowledge of how to use them). Winter daylight hours are short so start early.

KINDER SCOUT, PEAK DISTRICT Parking: Edale, S33 7ZL Why it’s great: A great area for circular routes, not too remote and generally non-technical terrain. Things to consider: Kinder Scout was the location for the Mass Trespass of ramblers in 1932, this was done as a protest to highlight lack of access to areas of open country and eventually resulted in legislation being passed allowing the ‘right to roam’.

PEN-Y-GHENT, YORKSHIRE DALES Parking: Horton-in-Ribblesdale, BD24 0HF Why it’s great: Gentle terrain to begin before becoming slightly more difficult and exposed towards the summit allowing you to get used to wintry conditions before the real challenge begins. Things to consider: For the geological afficionados out there, you will likely pass close to Hull Pot rumoured to be the largest natural hole in England at 300ft long, 60ft wide and 60ft deep.

WANSFELL, LAKE DISTRICT Parking: Ambleside Town Centre, LA22 9AN Why it’s great: A less remote area that makes for shorter routes and more gentle terrain for more tentative explorers. Things to consider: Perfect for building confidence and perhaps a little more convenient for heading straight for a post-walk feast, only to support the local economy of course!

PEN-Y-FAN, BRECON BEACONS Parking: Pont ar Daf Car Park, LD3 8NL Why it’s great: Terrain allows you to find your feet first before becoming slightly more challenging and steep at the top just before summiting, also routes can easily be made that little bit longer if you find you are particularly enjoying yourself. Things to consider: This is a popular area for mountain races/challenges all year round. Arrive early to avoid disappointment with regards to parking but be sure to give any competitors you see a word of encouragement along the way.

LOCHNAGAR, CAIRNGORMS Parking: Spittal of Glen Muick Car Park, AB35 5SU Why it’s great: A relatively remote area with a longer walk in, options for complete winter beginners or slightly more advanced beginners. Things to consider: Spectacular views from the top of Lochnagar (providing the weather allows) as well as Glas-allt-Shiel, also known as ‘The Widow’s House’ by the side of Loch Muick. This is where Queen Victoria mourned the death of her husband Albert and an out building has been donated as a bothy for those keen on overnight adventures.

ARTHUR’S SEAT, EDINBURGH Parking: Holyrood Park, EH8 8JD Why it’s great: Situated in the centre of Edinburgh it’s a stone’s throw from civilisation and offers predominantly gentle terrain while still offering some quality time gaining experience in the outdoors. Things to consider: The landscape was formed by an extinct volcano system from the Carboniferous age which was then eroded by a glacier exposing the crags to the west (Salisbury Crags). Holyrood Palace, within Holyrood Park, is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland.
