at the Olympics

Sport Climbing will make its Olympic debut in Tokyo, Japan. Although ‘sport climbing’ has historically referred to lead climbing on bolted rock, in the Olympics it will take on a new guise: a triathlonlike combined discipline event featuring Speed, Boulder and Lead climbing. Competitors and fans alike were initially unimpressed with this triple discipline format, but most athletes have warmed to the challenge of becoming a more well-rounded climber. A total of 40 athletes (20 men and 20 women) will compete at the Games. The competition will be held over 4 days (2 days of competing per sex). The first day consists of a qualification round with 20 climbers and the second day is a final involving the top 8 climbers from qualification. Athletes compete in Speed first, then Boulder, then Lead with short rest periods between each discipline.
SPEED Known as the ‘100 metres of climbing’, climbers race an opponent to the top of a standardised 15-metre-high wall featuring two side by side routes, or ‘lanes’. The climbing holds and the route they form are routinely practised by the athletes on homologated walls across the globe. Athletes have hit the buzzer and claimed world records in 5.48 seconds and 6.99 seconds for men and women respectively. Athletes compete head-to-head in matches in a bracket tournament structure until the winner is decided in a final race between the two fastest athletes. A super-fast time isn’t ultimately important, though, since beating opponents to the buzzer is the objective and false starts and slips are common in this discipline, which can leave the field relatively open.
BOULDER Bouldering is climbing low to the ground (~4 metres in height) with safety mats for protection. Athletes aim to complete short sequences of around 6-8 movements, called ‘boulders’, which often incorporate acrobatic or parkour-like dynamic movements. The boulders will be unknown to the climbers, so problem-solving skills come into play. Athletes can attempt a boulder as many times as required within a 5-minute time period, aiming to ‘top’ each boulder by taking the last hold in control with both hands. A ‘Zone’ hold is a progress-marker of sorts, positioned on a halfway hold or on a move which is difficult to achieve, but still below the top. This enables greater separation between athletes, who are ranked depending on their scores using the following hierarchy: 1. number of Tops, 2. number of Zones, 3. number of attempts to reach Tops, and 4. number of attempts to reach Zones. For example, a score of 3t7 4z5 = 3 Tops in 7 attempts, 4 Zones in 5 attempts. To rank 1st, a climber must top the most problems and reach the most zones in the fewest attempts. Athletes will tackle 4 boulders in the qualification round and 3 in the final round. A perfect score would therefore be 4t4 4z4, or 3t3 3z3 in the final. page 17

LEAD Lead climbing involves a wall around 15-20 metres in height and a climbing route with 40-60 holds/movements. Athletes climb with a rope and clip into safety points along the way up. Lead climbing tests endurance and pacing. Climbers aim to ‘Top’ the climb by clipping the rope into the final safety point at the top of the wall within the 6minute time period. Each hold reached is worth 1 scoring point and the athlete who climbs highest before falling or reaches the top will win the round. Only one attempt at the route can be made.
SCORING The combined score across the three disciplines is determined by multiplying the athletes’ ranking positions in Speed, Boulder and Lead. For example, 1st in Speed x 2nd in Boulder x 3rd in Lead = 1 x 2 x 3 = 6 points. The athlete with the lowest score is the winner. Since this multiplication system favours low numbers, athletes will be vying to rank 1st in their favoured discipline. It’s also worth noting that an athlete’s final ranking is greatly influenced by the relative rankings of their fellow competitors in this system! Ones to watch: Janja Garnbret (SLO) and Tomoa Narasaki (JPN) are seeded first for the Games. Great Britain’s Shauna Coxsey stands in good stead for a medal as third seed in the women’s event. ROCK SHOE BUYING GUIDE Rock climbing is all about footwork, so choosing a pair of climbing shoes
may be the most important move you make. The design, shape and materials vary according to the kind of climbing they’ve been made for. Our guide will help you find the ideal shoe and the best fit for you.
COMFORT
Ideal for: Beginner climbers; all-day comfort on multi-pitch climbs. Design: Flat and straight-lasted for comfort. They often use a very durable rubber. The midsole is usually medium-stiff to give a supportive platform. Fit: When starting out it’s important not to be seduced into getting a tight ‘technical’ fit. Fit shoes so that your toes touch the end, slightly curled but not crammed in.
ALL ROUND
Ideal for: Improving climbers moving up the grades; multi-discipline all-rounders. Design: More asymmetric and sometimes slightly downturned. Angled heels load power onto the toe. Thinner, stickier rubber and more flexible midsoles give better sensitivity. Fit: Improving climbers will appreciate the extra precision and edging power you get from snug fitting shoes and a slightly crimped toe position.
TOP TIPS FOR FITTING ROCK SHOES
• Shoes made from unlined leather will stretch with use (up to a full size). Nonstretch synthetic materials or lined leathers should stay true to the original size. • Rubber is the interface between you and the rock, and often your main defence against gravity! Harder compounds offer better durability and edging performance; softer rubbers give better friction but less solidity on edges. • Lacing gives precise adjustment down the length of the foot. Hook-and-loop (e.g. Velcro) tabs are quicker and easier to adjust. This is especially good for tight-fit bouldering shoes, allowing easy removal between problems. • Whether lace or Velcro, make sure there is scope for tighter adjustment, in case the uppers stretch over time. • Keep an open mind on size. You may need to go up or down from your usual street shoe size, depending on the brand and fit required. Brand

• Feet swell slightly through the day, so try rock shoes in the afternoon or after a walk. Remember you’ll be wearing them without socks. • Ensure shoes are laced or fastened securely to eliminate dead space. Focus on the forefoot, but aim for a snug heel as well. • Check that the shoe’s heel cup contours comfortably around the ankle bone and doesn’t dig in to the Achilles. • Test shoes in-store. Stand on holds or edges using different parts of the foot, including the big toe, inside forefoot and outside forefoot. Check they feel stable, with no rotation around the foot. • Rock shoes perform best when fitted snugly, but remember the old Five Ten motto: Pain is Insane! Don’t fit them too tightly; modern rock shoes will give you the performance without the pain.

CLIMBING ROPES BUYING GUIDE A dynamic climbing rope will link together your entire safety chain, and could be the thread that saves your life when you fall. With so much riding on this piece of equipment, it’s important to choose the most appropriate one for the kind of climbing you’re doing. The three main considerations are the type of rope; the length; and whether or not it should be dry treated.
TYPE OF ROPE
Single Ropes Single ropes are suitable to be used on their own. They are simple to use for both lead climber and belayer. Single ropes are ideal when the route follows a fairly straight line, so choose one for sport climbing, indoor walls (leading or top-roping) and short straight-up trad climbs.
Twin Ropes Here the climber uses two very thin (<8mm) ropes which must both be clipped together to the same protection. The benefit is that they’re lighter than half ropes, and can be used to do full rope-length abseils compared to single ropes. Pure twin ropes are rarely used in the UK.
Half (Double) Ropes Half ropes can be clipped independently to keep each line running straight on wandering, traditionally-protected routes. This reduces the ‘zig-zag’ effect (and rope drag) you’d get with a single rope. Half ropes can also be knotted together for full-length abseils.
Confidence Ropes The walker’s confidence rope is suitable for short-roping nervous members of a party over steep or rocky ground. Made from a lightweight static rope, it is not suitable for rock climbing.
CHOOSING A CLIMBING ROPE LENGTH
The length you choose depends on the kind of climbing you’re doing. Indoor Climbing Many indoor climbing centres have lead walls between 10m and 15m high. Therefore, a 30m or 40m single rope should be ideal for most indoor climbing centres. Longer ropes increase the chance of tangles and will take longer to re-coil at the end of the session!
Sport Climbing Many outdoor routes are significantly longer than those found indoors and it’s worthwhile having more than enough rope for any given route. 50m is a minimum; 60m covers most situations; 70m is good for longer pitches; and 80m will allow you to tackle longer extensions.
DRY TREATMENT
Untreated ropes can shrink by 10% when wet. As the nylon shortens, the rope becomes less dynamic (stretchy), which increases the impact force. This increases the chance of ripping protection and/or a bigger shock to the body in the event of a fall. Soaked and frozen ropes can also be unmanageable. So for any adventurous trad, alpine or winter climbing, a dry treatment is essential. Look for ‘Dry’ ropes with Brand

Trad Climbing 50m ropes save weight and reduce rope faff on shorter rock pitches. However, 60m lengths may allow you to reach and attach to better belay stances. They also allow longer abseils which can be crucial on winter and alpine climbs. As ever, longer ropes give you a greater safety margin.

STAFF IN ACTION
One of the main reasons I’m so passionate about climbing is the stories I can share; not all of them are good, but all mean something to me. Most of the stories I tell seem to involve using words like runout, sketchy and tiring. Nonetheless, I wouldn’t change a single thing. It’s these experiences that make you who you are, and what you’ll always remember, as you’ll always find yourself chewing someone’s ear off with one story or another. I had just completed one of my favourite alpine routes, Arête des Cosmiques. I was exhausted, feeling supersick from the altitude and the exertion. We’d pretty much had to run the second half of the route to beat a storm home (that’s a story for another time), and every part of my body hurt. However, after a couple of recovery drinks of one sort or another, I realised it was one of the best climbing experiences I had ever had. The next day, I went back up for a different route full of psych. I’ve also had to back off routes many times, which is a different sort of good feeling. Sometimes pushing through isn’t the right call, and it’s a good moment when you realise that turning back is the sensible and safe option.
Climbing has changed a lot for me over time. It’s so diverse, whether indoors at the local wall, trad climbing at Stanage, or alpine ascents around Chamonix; I’ve learnt to love all of it. When I first put on a pair of rock shoes at my local bouldering wall I thought that it was just going to be a good way to keep fit, little did I know that one day I’d be putting on rock shoes at 3000m in the Alps. Fortunately, climbing is also part of my work, whether it be instructing or kitting someone out for their next adventure… while of course, sharing stories with them. page 37
