Solution Science for Research and Industry

January 2010 Edition: New Year, New Products... Elliot Scientific has recently introduced a new version of the E3500 computer-controlled multiple-trap optical tweezer system with E4100 QPD (Quadrant Photo Detector) force measurement facility. The system utilises two fibre-coupled lasers: one for trapping and the other for the probe beam. The tweezer was built into a high-end Nikon microscope and a similar system will be demonstrated by our tweezer team at February's Biophysical Society's 54th Annual Meeting in San Francisco. At January's Photonics West, we will reveal our Optical Tweezer Roadmap. A presentation that will detail the future development of this product range, showing the new technologies and applications ahead. To see the product range and view the demo videos, visit our laser tweezer product pages, download our tweezer summary brochure here or email Sales to request more information.

AKELA Laser Corporation, a leading high power laser diode manufacturer of custom diodes and optomechanical sub-assemblies, has selected Elliot Scientific to distribute their products in the UK and Ireland. AKELA offers: • • • •

Multi-mode and single mode pulsed and CW diode lasers Diode laser modules, bars and arrays Standard packages and custom designs Wavelengths: 635nm to greater than 2 microns

They are the market leader in the wavelength region from 1208 to 2000 nm, achieving powers roughly 2~3 times that of the competition. The AKELA range is also the most complete in the industry, offering the widest choice of wavelengths from 635 nm onwards. To discover more about this new signing, please go to the AKELA product page or email Sales.

A New Year brings a New Look as Sperian combines the timelessness of tortoise shell with high-tech in the launch of the New York range of comfortable and stylish laser protection spectacles. Intricate metal accents not only enhance the design, but also create a highly protective laser-resistant frame. Sperian's use of premium materials for every component in this sophisticated, high quality product results in CE certified laser protection like no other in the industry. For more information on this frame and the others available, please visit the Sperian product page or email Sales with your requirements.

FEMTOLASERS have been busy and 2010 sees the launch of two new lasers: FEMTOSOURCE scientific XL 650 is the most powerful Chirped Pulse Oscillator of the scientific XL family. It is designed specifically for applications which demand even higher pulse energies, offering more than 650 nJ in under 50 fs at MHz repetition rates. FUSION M1 is the most powerful member of the ultra-compact Ti:Sapphire oscillator family. Maximum stability and ease of operation, combined with cutting edge laser parameters from a compact oscillator are guaranteed. The enlarged FEMTOOPTICS Catalogue can be downloaded here and for more information on the lasers, please visit our FEMTOLASERS pages or email the laser team at Sales.

Elliot Scientific's YouTube Channel is now hosting a video demonstrating the imaging of methane gas using a Firefly-IR system from M Squared Lasers. Conventional video shot under normal lighting shows nothing, but a mid-IR image recorded using a Firefly-IR laser tuned to a methane absorption line at 3.35 µm shows the emerging gas plume clearly. The original video material is courtesy of the University of St. Andrews.

Thales Laser Division's Gaïa-R is industrialising laser shock peening. This advanced material processing technique, once limited to the laboratory, is finding use in automotive and aerospace factories as it offers a faster, cleaner and more effective method of strengthening alloys than traditional shot blasting. Details of how the flashlamp-pumped Nd:YAG laser has improved industrial processes was revealed in MWP magazine's Shock Treatment article found on page 69 of the November 2009 issue. To find out more about this laser and its stablemates, see the Thales Laser product pages or email Sales.
