When AMC aired “Dark Winds’”

Season 1 finale mid-July last year, the show proved, if nothing else, that all it takes is six great episodes to create a strong and supportive fan base. Now, a little more than one year after said finale, New Mexico cops Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon, “Reservation Dogs”) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon, “The Red Road”) are back for Round 2, calling all fans back to their TV sets and computer screens once again. Season 2 of “Dark Winds” premieres Sunday, July 30, on AMC and the AMC+ streaming service. Set in the American Southwest during the 1970s, the spiritually infused crime thriller follows two Navajo officers of the law, Leaphorn and Chee, as they take on a smattering of cases in their desert

community. Constantly plagued by an open double murder in the first season, the officers take on several other, smaller cases while chipping away at the big unsolved crime, all while grappling with their own personal and cultural demons.

The series opened to positive reviews when it premiered in June 2022 and continued to pick up acclaim over its six weeks on air. Among the most notable accolades, “Dark Winds” was nominated for the Best Action/Thriller Television Series Saturn Award, and leading man Gordon was nominated for a Gotham Award for his performance as undercover FBI agent Chee. Additionally, the Graham Roland (“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”) -created series earned a Western Heritage Award for the pilot, titled “Monster.”

The AMC production has also

been lauded for its richness of Indigenous culture, well-rounded character development and overall beautiful storytelling — the latter of which comes as no surprise to those familiar with the other works of executive producers George R.R. Martin (“Game of Thrones”) and Robert Redford (“Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” 1969).

Backed up by a massive team of talented writers, producers, directors and more, Martin and Redford have a major part in bringing the Navajo Mysteries novels of Tony Hillerman to life.

Much of the magic, however, falls in the hands of the series’ cast. Returning for Season 2 alongside Gordon and McClarnon are Jessica Matten (“Frontier”) as gifted tribal police Sgt. Bernadette Manuelito; Deanna Allison (“Accused”) as Leaphorn’s wife,

Emma; and Rainn Wilson (“The Office”) in his unusually sinister role as twisted missionary and used car salesman “Devoted Dan” DeMarco. There has also been word that Sally Growing Thunder (Elva Guerra, “Reservation Dogs”), Frank Nakai (Eugene Brave Rock, “That Dirty Black Bag”) and Hoski (Jeremiah Bitsui, “Better Call Saul”) are likely to return this season.

As for the remainder of the second-season plot, the “Dark Winds” trailer features a very human threat in the form of a “blond man” walking onto the reservation and committing a string of murders. Though with many of Season 1’s questions still lingering without concrete answers, it’s worth noting that many of this season’s horrors link back to the freshman season in one way or another.

Guerrero Jr. and the Jays look to move up in the AL East

With the Aug. 1 Major League Baseball trade deadline looming, everyone is keeping a close eye on which teams are making moves to fill glaring holes in their rosters. And while much has been said and written about the Toronto Blue Jays’ good-but-not-great season so far, fans are looking to the team’s best players to help deliver another win this Sunday, July 30, when the Jays wrap up a series against the Los Angeles Angels in a game airing live on Peacock.

While the Jays’ record this season may look similar to last, the team had a sluggish first half — and that did them no favors in a loaded AL East, where they sat in fourth place for much of June. No one expected them to be chasing the third wild card spot at the midway point, but the Jays’ roster doesn’t lack depth as the team looks to turn things around.

Having been named to his third All-Star game, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. thrilled fans by winning this year’s Home Run Derby in Seattle. While the midseason accolades gave them reason to celebrate, the 2023 campaign has been an uphill battle for the Montreal-born player. Known for his explosive hitting power, Guerrero Jr.’s slugging percentage took a hit this season, sitting at .443 at the midway point — his worst since 2019.

Despite the struggles, there has been a glimmer of hope for Guerrero Jr. In his last 15 games before the All-Star break, he hit four home runs while batting .271, with an .881 on-base plus slugging (OPS) percentage. If the Jays have any hope of making it into the post-season, they’ll need Guerrero Jr. to step up and have a strong second half to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Look for Guerrero Jr. to come out swinging when the Toronto Blue Jays take on the Los Angeles Angels at Rogers Centre, Sunday, July 30, when the game airs live on Peacock.

“Alien” (1979): Director Ridley Scott’s deepspace chiller introduced Weaver — who now stars in the Prime Video series “The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart,” debuting Friday, Aug. 4 — to audiences as she played one of several astronauts aboard a vessel that unwittingly picked up an unwelcome, and quite lethal, guest during a rescue mission on a remote planet.

“The Year of Living Dangerously”

(1982): Weaver and Mel Gibson are extremely sexy together in a tale of romance amid political unrest. Co-star Linda earned an Oscar in a gender-crossing supporting role.

“Ghostbusters” (1984): Who ya gonna call? In the case of Weaver (as a literally haunted woman), Bill Murray and company, of course, but demonic possession lets her camp and vamp it up for a while.

“Aliens” (1986): The original “Alien” is iconic

in its own way, but the first sequel gave Weaver even more to do as astronaut Ellen Ripley fought a queen alien to ensure a child’s safety.

“Gorillas in the Mist” (1988): Weaver proves an ideal choice to embody famed scientist Dian Fossey, who paid greatly for her dedication.

“Working Girl” (1988): A droll Weaver is perfect in this comedy, directed by Mile Nichols, as a sneaky boss who wants to take credit for an employee’s (Melanie Griffith) business idea while trying to keep her claim on the acquisitions veteran (Harrison Ford) they both love.

“Death and the Maiden” (1994): Weaver does a lot of the heavy lifting in director Roman Polanski’s intense drama, in which she plays an activist convinced that she has a previous and very unsavory connection to a neighbor (Ben Kingsley).

“Copycat” (1995): Weaver does a superb job of conveying agoraphobia as a psychiatrist

reluctantly helping a policewoman (Holly Hunter) track a serial killer.

“The Ice Storm” (1997): A very adult, and adulterous, Weaver is great in helping put forth a story of restless mid-1970s suburbanites.

“Galaxy Quest” (1999): This good-natured sci-fi spoof casts Weaver as one of the former stars of a fantasy series, thought to be the real thing by actual aliens who want the actors’ help against an intergalactic enemy.

“Heartbreakers” (2001): Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt are fun as a mother-daughter team of con artists who bait wealthy men into compromising situations, but they meet their match in one intended target played by Ray Liotta.

“Avatar” (2009): Reunited with “Aliens” director James Cameron, Weaver plays it properly clinically as a scientist who either could aid or foil an ex-Marine’s mission on the planet Pandora.

Q: As “When Calls the Heart” starts its 10th season, what is your feeling about reaching that milestone?

A: It’s just incredible. We’re very, very lucky to be working with a network that is so supportive, and that we have such a fan base of “Hearties” that’s so loyal and passionate about our show. Typically in years past, we have premiered around February, so we’re really testing their patience here … but they sound very excited about seeing Season 10, and we can’t wait to share it.

Q: What can you say about the new season of the series as it begins?

A: As usual, we left things off with a pretty climactic episode. There was a fire and a proposal and a lot of things happening, and Season 10 has a lot of drama and action and romance. We’re planning a wedding, there’s danger happening in Hope Valley, there are funny moments with the kids – just a lot. We try to level up every season.

I think we have a pretty good sense of what our audience appreciates most, and sometimes, we like to challenge that by feeding them some stories that might be tough on them. For example, some people really struggled with the idea of Rosemary (played by Pascale Hutton) and Elizabeth (Krakow’s character) being at odds at all … and I didn’t love playing arguments with my dear friend Pascale, it reset things a bit. At the end of the day, it’s about spending time with these people who viewers have come to love.

Q: The engagement of Elizabeth and Lucas (played by Chris McNally) is a major aspect of Season 10. How is it for you to portray that?

A: It’s nice to get to explore a new chapter in their love story. It has been a minute since Elizabeth was married, so we took our time with this, and they’re getting to explore what this new phase of their relationship looks like. It comes with some really lovely and loving scenes, but it also comes with some real challenges.
