A familiar path: ‘Justified’ returns to FX with ‘City Primeval’ sequel

By Jay Bobbin

To those who enjoyed the initial drama, a sequel to it is likely to seem quite “Justified.” Timothy Olyphant returns in the further adventures of lawman Raylan Givens as the FX series “Justified: City Primeval” debuts with the first two of its eight episodes

Tuesday, July 18. Set 15 years after “Justified” ended, the saga adapts another story by Elmore Leonard (“City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit”) and newly factors Givens into it, with the U.S. marshal living in Miami after his time in Kentucky.

A situation that develops in Florida leads him to Detroit and a vicious felon known as the Oklahoma Wildman (played by Boyd Holbrook, previously of “Narcos”), whose lawyer (“King Richard” Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis) has her own rea-

sons for wanting to help her client elude the scales of justice. With Olyphant also an executive producer of the show along with author Leonard’s estate, “Justified: City Primeval” includes Adelaide Clemens (“Rectify”), Vondie Curtis-Hall (“The Recruit”), Marin Ireland (“Hell or High Water,” 2016), double Tony Award winner

Norbert Leo Butz (“The Girl From Plainville”), Ravi Patel (“Animal Control) and Vivian Olyphant – the star’s daughter, who plays Givens’ offspring – among additional cast members. They’re new to the “Justified” world, as is actress Ellis, who felt she couldn’t go wrong with material that\ originally came from the mind of Leonard.

“I just had a general familiarity with ‘Justified,’” she says. “I knew it was an Elmore Leonard adaptation,

and I was interested in that because I’m a big reader. Then, when I started working on this, I watched (the original show) and got to see Tim being ‘that guy.’ It was one of those things where you feel a character was written for somebody, even if the author did not have that person in mind.

“There was a great singer named Phyllis Hyman, and Duke Ellington’s granddaughter says that she believes he wrote his songs for Phyllis Hyman even before she was born,” Ellis explains. “There also are acting roles like that, and I just feel that Tim is the person who was meant to walk in these boots.”

Much of the appeal for Ellis in playing attorney Carolyn Wilder in “Justified: City Primeval” came from what she defines as “taking that ‘Justified’ world and putting it inside

Detroit, and seeing those worlds collide. (Givens) certainly is a fish out of water there, and I love how Carolyn is very confrontational with him. She says, ‘I know how you’ve been doing things, but you can’t do them here … not in my town, and not with me.’” Still, there’s room for Carolyn to have her own development arc.

“There’s the world of justice and the world of law, and sometimes, those don’t meet,” Ellis reasons. “I think Carolyn is one of those people who feel that justice isn’t necessarily found in a courthouse or a legislative building. You have to find it where you can find it, and I think that’s what makes her and Raylan kindred spirits. She does things that are necessary, but she still has to find her footing and

Alex Morgan is ready for FIFA Women’s World Cup

Jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand, the much-anticipated FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off Thursday, July 20, providing a platform for the world’s best soccer players to showcase their skills. This year’s international tournament has arguably the most talented pool of players, with several teams poised to make a strong run, though all eyes will be on the reigning and two-time defending champion: the United States.

Heading into this tournament, the U.S. is looking to secure its fifth World Cup title and make history by becoming the first women’s football team to win a record third consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The squad has no shortage of experience — in fact, this will be the fourth World Cup tournament for forward Alex Morgan. A two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champion, the San Diego Wave FC star played a big role in helping the U.S. secure a spot in this year’s World Cup. In the title match of the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship (formerly the CONCACAF Women’s Championship), Morgan scored on a penalty kick to defeat Canada 1-0, earning the team a berth in both the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and 2024 Paris Olympics.

Having already played on two of the most talented teams, in 2015 and 2019, Morgan sees many similar championship qualities on this year’s team.

“I think this is the best team we’ve ever had,” Morgan told The Guardian in an interview. “I feel like we have the talent, we have the quality, we have the right coach, the right players, the right camaraderie, the right mentality.” Going into the tournament with confidence at an all-time high, the U.S. will start its quest for another World Cup championship on Friday, July 21, with a Group E match against Vietnam, airing live (from Auckland, New Zealand) on Fox.

BEST PAUL NEWMAN MOVIES

“The Hustler” (1961): One of Newman’s most memorable roles is “Fast” Eddie Felson, a pool-playing upstart who wants to take on the legendary Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason). The film will be presented Tuesday, July 18, on Turner Classic Movies.

“The Prize” (1963): Newman displays great humor within a thriller premise in the Irving Wallace story about an unlikely Nobel Peace Prize winner caught up in intrigue while in Sweden for the ceremony.

“Harper” (1966): Newman’s smooth, sly screen image largely was crystallized by this private-eye tale that boasts a great all-star supporting cast.

“Torn Curtain” (1966): This Alfred Hitchcock-directed spy story involves Newman in a brutal kitchen scene. Trust us, you’ll know it when you see it.

“Cool Hand Luke” (1967): An outstanding Newman plays an independent-minded convict who shows “a failure to communicate.”

“Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969): Newman and Robert Redford had their first teaming as the title

outlaws who, at least here, stage robberies with a humorous spirit.

“The Sting” (1973): The reunited Newman and Robert Redford are great in this best picture Oscar winner as Depression-era con men out to even a score with a tough gangster (Robert Shaw).

“The Towering Inferno” (1974): Though he faces more immediate peril than any architect hopefully would, Newman makes a fine action hero in producer Irwin Allen’s disaster epic about a fire in the world’s tallest building.

“Absence of Malice” (1981): Newman is in top form as a mobster’s grandson seeking justice after a newspaper article wrongly suggests he’s involved in illegal dealings.

“The Verdict” (1982): In what many deem his career-best performance, Newman plays a down-on-his-luck Boston lawyer seeking redemption via a case against the Catholic Church. “Nobody’s Fool” (1994): A terrific Newman plays a smalltown ne’er-do-well trying to patch things up with his estranged son (Dylan Walsh).

OF AMERICA’S FUNNIEST HOME VIDEOS ON ABC

Q: As you head toward your ninth season of hosting “America’s Fun- niest Home Videos,” are you still enjoying it?

A: I absolutely love it! It’s been a lot of fun, and it’s always home base for me. It feels to me like it will continue to be on for a very, very long time, and it always will be my Number One, though it feels like “Dancing With the Stars” – on which I was co-host and am now host – is making a comeback.

Q: Did you enjoy being involved in PBS’ “A Capitol Fourth” as the special’s host recently?

A: I saw the list of people they had (as musical guests), and I thought, “Oh, this is great! I’ll be able to hang with a lot of people I know for several days, celebrating.” I was less worried about the number of people who would be there (as on-site audience members) and more concerned with my own emotions over how cool it was to be a part of that and to be able to be on that stage.

Q: Your friend and “America’s Funniest Home Videos” predecessor Tom Bergeron host- ed “A Capitol Fourth” multiple times. What do you make of that?

A: All I can say is that following in Tom Bergeron’s footsteps in any way is an incredible honor. I’ve always considered him to be the best host on TV, and typically, it’s when he gives up a job that a job becomes available for me. It was obviously a little different with “Dancing With the Stars,” with Tyra (Banks) coming in between the two of us, but it’s an honor. He’s someone you want to model your career after.
