J. Fox Movie’ pulls back the curtain with Michael J. Fox

Cover Story

Apple TV+ profiles Michael J. Fox in ‘STILL’

Michael J. Fox’s life has entailed a lot, and as his many fans long have been aware, not all of it has been for the cameras.

The five-time Primetime Emmy Award winner was at the height of his popularity as an actor when he received a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease in 1991, and both his private and public aspects get considerable attention in “STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” which Apple TV+ debuts Friday, May 12. Directed by Davis Guggenheim (“An Inconvenient Truth”) – whose wife, Elisabeth Shue, worked with Fox in the “Back to the Future” franchise – the film factors dramatic re-creations into Fox-narrated recollections of his experiences.

Though Fox admits he had

early difficulty emotionally in dealing with his health assessment, he ultimately channeled the situation into the nonprofit Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. It has financed more than $1 billion in projects, including a recent breakthrough involving a spinal fluid test. Fox also has traced his life and times in several memoirs:

“Lucky Man,” “Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist” and “No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality.”

Last year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gave Fox the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, also an acknowledgment of his significance as a member of the entertainment community. After

he moved to Los Angeles from his native Canada, it wasn’t long before he was cast as politically minded Alex P. Keaton in the sitcom “Family Ties”; during its seven-season run, he also scored such movie successes as the three “Back to the Future” films, “Teen Wolf” and “The Secret of My Success,” plus image departures in “Bright Lights, Big City” (co-starring Fox’s wife, Tracy Pollan) and “Casualties of War.” After making such early-1990s comedy films as “Doc Hollywood” and “For Love or Money,” Fox returned to weekly sitcom work in “Spin City.” Midway through that show’s run, he went public with his Parkinson’s news, and Charlie Sheen succeeded him in the series. However, Fox earned later acclaim for recurring guest roles

on “Boston Legal,” “Rescue Me” and “The Good Wife.” In 2012, Fox made a bid for series work again with “The Michael J. Fox Show,” which incorporated aspects of his real life as he played a TV newsman. It lasted less than one season, but afterward, Fox reunited with earlier movie co-star and longtime friend Kiefer Sutherland in a guest arc on the latter’s show “Designated Survivor.” Though Fox maintains that he has retired from acting, he notes that could change under the right circumstances. For now, he’s back in the limelight by telling his own story in “STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” and it’s

“Movie: Baby

Mama”

Two veterans of “Saturday Night Live” reunite, to very funny effect, in this comedy about surrogate parenthood. Tina Fey plays a business-minded woman who wants to have a child, though she’s biologically unable to. The apparent solution is a decidedly different, rough-around-the-edges lady (Amy Poehler) who moves in, making it anyone’s guess if the duo will be able to endure each other until the baby is born.

deGrom looks to put health woes behind him in Texas

When your team hasn’t seen the postseason berth in six years and has a pitching staff consistently among the game’s worst, the need for change is obvious. And so it is that Jacob deGrom became a Texas Ranger.

Signing a five-year, $185 million contract over the winter, the twotime Cy Young winner represents a significant upgrade and a significant gamble on the part of the Rangers. Yes, when the righthander is healthy, he’s arguably the best pitcher in the game, as his career ERA of 2.55 would indicate. And his arrival, along with those of righty Nathan Eovaldi and lefty Andrew Heaney, served notice to the rest of the league that the Rangers are officially in win now mode.

But in recent years, the 34-year-old Floridian has looked increasingly fragile. He missed the second half of 2021 with inflammation in his pitching elbow. Then last season, a stress reaction in his right shoulder kept him out all year until August. And when he returned, the Mets, his former team, kept him on a strict pitch limit, which they removed when they needed him for a playoff run. And at that point he looked very ordinary, pitching to a 1-3 record with a 4.50 ERA in five starts.

Little wonder, then, why the Mets balked at giving him more than a three-year deal. The Rangers, conversely, were all too eager to give him the long-term deal he desired.

Now presumably healthy again, he leads a revamped Texas rotation with newcomers Eovaldi and Heaney and returnees Jon Gray and Martin Perez, one that the Rangers faithful hope will help make the team a force in the American League West.

The Rangers can be seen in action against the Oakland A’s Saturday, May 13, on FS1.

Q: What do you think got “The Neighborhood” to its recent 100th episode, which you directed?

Agent

A: The cast is just really dynamic. That’s been really one of the key things, I believe, to the longevity and the success of the show that we’ve had. And, of course, our writing staff and just the whole family environment here.

We feel very blessed to be able to be doing a show on a big, major network at this time. I’m really proud of that (100th-episode) milestone, as well as getting the great news that we’ll be back for a sixth season.

Q: What was your own neighborhood like when you were young?

“Wanda Sykes: I’m an Entertainer” (Netflix — new special, May 23)

The actress and comic brings her insightful wit and candor to bear as she discusses topics ranging from raising Gen Z teens to the dilemmas of being a liberal in a hyper charged political climate, in this stand-up performance filmed this past February at the Miller Theater in Philadelphia.

q&a

A: I grew up in St. Louis, definitely the kind of neighborhood where you knew everybody up and down the block, the different families. You knew the houses not to go to. All of these things were a part of being a great neighborhood. Now, of course, it’s very different. One, I’m extremely rich. I have to live behind 13 gates, I believe, right now. There’s several security guards to even get to my own bedroom. (In the pandemic era,) everybody had to get outside. We were walking, and that was the first time in recent years that I had an opportunity to kind of find out about people who lived near me, and see their faces and know who they were.

Q: When did you first get the sense that comedy could be a career for you?

A: You know, for me, it was in junior high school, you know ... that eighth- or ninth-grade era of your life, when you are kind of transitioning from being your mother’s kid to this guy that’s going to have your own identity and your friend group. You are getting a little more independence.

Q: What do you think got “The Neighborhood” to its recent 100th episode, which you directed?

I think that’s when my sense of humor started to jump out and when I was aware of it, especially when I started getting in trouble at school for being funny – doing things that I thought was just me being myself, and I’d find out I would have the kids all laughing. Then the teacher would blame me for being disruptive, and I was like, “Oh. This is something.”
