The Guild

So, like, what even is “The Guild”?

In a nutshell: The Guild exists to protect the welfare of students, to represent your interests with the University, and to provide services that enhance your experience of studying at ECU. The Guild is governed by a council of elected students called the “Senate”. The senate decides the overall priorities of the Guild, approves how the budget should be spent, and any changes to how the Guild is organised. The Senate also debates issues students are concerned about and can direct representatives or Guild departments on how to respond. The day-to-day governance of the Guild is the responsibility of the Secretariat. Members of the Secretariat are more hands-on in their role and are responsible for the implementation of new policies, liaising with the operations side of the Guild, and ensuring the Guild is run in a transparent and accountable way. The Guild also employs staff to make sure its key services are delivered professionally on each campus. Some staff have direct contact with students, while others work behind the scenes to keep the Guild running smoothly. There are Guild offices on each campus open Monday - Friday throughout most of the year.

What does the Guild do, exactly? The Guild runs the second hand books service, publishes GSM (ECU’s student magazine), listens and talks to students through social media, discusses issues affecting students at ECU and how to resolve them, runs sausage sizzles, provides the text book subsidy scheme, organises end of semester parties, provides academic and professional referrals and assistance with academic appeals, provides kitchen facilities, supplies free fruit, bread and breakfast to students, grants emergency loans, operates free espresso machines, advocates students’ interests to the University administration, provides free printing facilities, distributes free student diaries and other merchandise, provides online access to the Guild’s financial and policy documents, provides a discount program to members, lobbies the University and the government for better conditions for students, hosts workshops and runs educational campaigns about issues affecting students, supports social justice causes, funds and promotes student clubs and societies, hires students for casual labour, supports minority and marginalised communities on campus, organises the ECU Welcome Days, club carnivals and other major campus events…

Hey, I heard I have to pay to join the Guild? Nope! It is 100% free to join the Guild. ECU charges a mandatory Student Services and Amenities Fee. This money is then distributed to all the different organisations providing services to students on campus according to criteria decided by the government. The Guild must regularly provide the University with updates showing how it spent its portion of this money, and how its programs aim to benefit students. This money can only be spent on services and events that are apolitical and serve to enhance the experience of students studying at ECU. The Guild’s budget, as well as other public documents can be downloaded from www.ecuguild.org.au

Why should I join the Guild? Firstly, to get the full range of Guild benefits you must to be a member. Secondly, Guild membership rates help inform us if our services are appealing to students; if you use any guild facilities, attend Guild-supported events, or access any Guild services your membership helps ensure the Guild receives the right amount of funding for providing these. Joining the Guild is free and takes two minutes! To join the Guild just log into SIMO. To validate your Guild membership make sure you collect a Guild member sticker. These stickers must be displayed on your student card and mustbe updated each semester. You’ll also be given a Guild Student Pack. These packs are filled with freebies including a student diary and a discount booklet just for Guild members.

But what if I still don’t want to join the Guild? Joining the Guild is completely optional. If you would like to alter your membership status you can change this by logging into SIMO anytime before the census deadline of each semester (i.e. the last date you can change your enrolment without any academic penalties). Feedback from students is always welcome! You can leave your comments on the Guild’s Facebook page or email president@ecuguild.org.au
