NEWS

Get ready for Hermanus FynArts! I

f there’s a town that loves a festival, it’s Hermanus! Three years ago the chairperson of Hermanus Tourism, Mary Faure, launched a unique event that was described as a fusion between an arts festival and a winter school, offering the best of South African arts. Since then Hermanus FynArts has become one of the highlights on the cultural calendar, offering the cream of musical productions, art exhibitions, workshops, talks, demonstrations and so much more. There is something for everyone and tickets are selling fast, so check out the programme details on the middle pages of this month’s Village Explorer, and enjoy the varied articles related to FynArts. For more information, visit www.hermanusfynarts.co.za or call Hermanus Tourism on 028 312 2629. Another innovation is the first ever Walker Bay Xtreme Sports Festival which kicks off this weekend. The event is presented by Rick Oosthuizen of the Hermanus Business Chamber in collaboration with the Hermanus Sea & Sand Institute, and will include unique tracks and courses right in the centre of town to provide maximum spectator value and entertainment.

Our arts pages are once again brimming with news from the local art scene in Hermanus on pages 6 & 7, while Frieda Lloyd, coordinator of the Hermanus Wine Route, takes a look at interesting red blends produced in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley on page 9. We also pop into Fabio’s Ristorante on page 17 for a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the wonderful world of Italian cooking. On page 19 we also look at the unsung heroes of Hermanus NSRI Station 17 and the volunteers who ensure the safety of not only humans but also animals. Winter is almost here, which not only means FynArts is on the way, but also the gentle giants of the deep that have become honorary residents of Hermanus. Be sure to follow Village Explorer on Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news!

Sportsmen and women will compete in a variety of extreme challenges, including open water swimming, cycling, running, stand-up sea paddling, cross-fit challenge, strong man competition, marathon and triathlon. The line-up also includes children’s challenges and live music entertainment on Friday and Saturday evening. For the full programme of events, visit www.walkerbayxtreme.com.

A whole Village under one roof

The Village Square centre is affectionately known as “the heart of Hermanus”. Situated in a prime location in the heart of the old fisherman’s village just above the iconic Old Harbour, the centre is conveniently close to all the major tourist attractions and accommodation establishments. In the double-volume arcade you will find a light and airy space alive with shoppers who are attracted to the eclectic mix of retail available from more than 30 specialty shops that include fashion boutiques, curio and gift shops, jewellery stores, beauty, massage and hair salons, home décor and art galleries. Each has its own unique character and offers specialty items unlike anything that can be found in commercial shops with mass-produced merchandise. Another major attraction is the waterfront piazza at Village Square, where both residents and tourists mingle and meet at the outside tables under colourful umbrellas. The centre has one of the biggest concentrations of restaurants in Hermanus where some of the town’s most popular chefs are serving up excellent cuisine ranging from breakfast and lunch to sundowners and dinner. In front of the piazza is the open-air auditorium with its kiddies’ play park overlooking Walker Bay. This is a popular look-out point for whales and also a focal point of the many festivals and special events that take place in Hermanus during the year, including the hugely popular annual Whale Festival. Other amenities at Village Square include a photo shop, two foreign exchange outlets with postal service, an ATM, a lift and rest rooms – a whole village under one roof catering for all your needs! Village Square is open seven days a week and trading hours are from Monday to Saturday 09:00-17:00, and Sundays from 10:00-15:00. Several of the restaurants open earlier for morning coffee and breakfast, and stay open for dinner in the evenings. For more information, visit www.village-square.co.za

Fearless Expression

I

nternational Filmmaker F C Hamman and his artist wife Annie Hamman, have been observing and filming their daughter whilst painting since she was a toddler.

In her very own style, she creates colourful layered abstracts using brushes, sponges, rollers and pens, fingers, hands and feet. Sometimes she erases what she doesn't like and starts new. With no interference or instruction from her parents and providing maximum freedom, 3-year-old Tallulah has created more than 15 paintings. Films demonstrating the process and the concept of education through art will be shown alongside Tallulah’s paintings at Bellini Gallery in Village Square from 4 to 16 June 2015. The exhibition will be opened by renowned artist Shelley Adams on 4 June at 18:00. The exhibition aims to encourage a lively discussion about freedom and limitations in art as well as in raising and educating our children.

Can you remember who you were before the world told you who you should be”

Uncorking Hemel-en-Aarde red blends by Frieda Lloyd

I

f synergy is the creation of a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts, then blending is the perfect illustration of synergy. Blending results in more than just the total effect of the grape components. More varietals blended together provide more structure, more depth, more flavours and more aromas. The Hermanus Wine Route produces a selection of red blends and these can be grouped into four general style categories: Bordeaux blends, Rhône blends, Cape blends and Italian blends Bordeaux blends Centred on the city of Bordeaux in France, the Bordeaux blend is the most famous merger of red wines and also referred to as “claret” in England. The wine is created from the juice of five varietals. Cabernet Sauvignon makes up the greatest measure with equal or lesser amounts of Merlot and smaller portions of the remaining varietals, Cabernet Franc, Malbec or Petit Verdot. Hermanuspietersfontein are well known for their excellent red blends, and winemaker Kim McFarlane favours their Bordeaux blend, Kleinboet, for the structure that the five varietals provide to this full-bodied red. A few kilometres further up the Hemel-en-Aarde Road, La Vierge express their affinity for red blends by producing three. Despite the unconventional name their Nymphomane is a typical Bordeaux blend made with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec. Rhône blends Rhone blends originated in the south of France with a combination of some of the following: Syrah (also known as Shiraz), Viognier, Grenache, Cinsaut and Mourvèdre. Syrah is typically used as the most prominent element and provides a bold body to the wine with spice and pepper aromas. Hermanuspietersfontein cellar master Wilhelm Pienaar and tasting room assistant Jason Hendricks favour their Rhône blend, Skoonma. Wilhelm enjoys Skoonma for its elegance and completeness. This is the one “where

it all comes together” for Wilhelm. He enjoys the chemistry of blending Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre and is expecting the 2015 harvest to deliver great wines due to weather conditions allowing the grapes to ripen evenly this year. At Newton Johnson winemakers Gordon and Nadia are achieving great success with their Rhône blends Full Stop Rock and Granum. Granum originates from weathered granite soil that provides minerals affecting the grapevine’s performance. It makes the growth more energetic and the character fuller, more perfumed. Granum is a blend of Syrah with 12% Mourvèdre – all grown in the Newton Johnson vineyards. Full Stop Rock takes blending a step up with the addition of Grenache, a Spanish varietal that lacks colour but adds spice and partners perfectly with Syrah.

Winemaker JC Martin enjoys blending Syrah and Grenache at Creation and calls it the “sly chameleon” as it tends to change its character to suit the occasion. This flexibility is a welcoming quality when it comes to food and wine pairing for which Creation is well known. Savoury notes of spice with soft textures makes the Syrah Grenache a balanced wine to be enjoyed with almost any meal. Cape blends Crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsaut (also called Hermitage) produced a unique and proudly South Africa varietal –

Pinotage. This experiment delivered the foundation of South Africa’s own blend – the Cape Blend. To enter the prestigious Perold Absa Cape Blend Competition a Cape Blend should contain between 30% and 70% Pinotage. Other components can vary but usually include Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Local Cape blends are made at Sumaridge and Ashbourne where Pinotage adds an indigenous expression of boldness on the palate. Resident winemakers ReinoThiart and Peter Finlayson enjoy working with Italian wine varietals. At Whalehaven Thiart considers the Italian grape varietals to be the most challenging to blend with. Grapes such as Sangiovese, Barbera, Primotivo (also known as Zinfandel) and Nebbiolo are not well known in South Africa but make interesting wines that are not always predictable when blending takes place. These wines are tasted not for what they are but for how they will develop in future. Viognier is a powerful blending partner and can be quite prominent on the nose. Bouchard Finlayson produces Hannibal from the Italian grapes Sangiovese and Nebbiolo imported in 1989 and developed over a twelve-year period before commercially releasing this popular wine. The secret blend of the Hemel-enAarde is surely the Ataraxia Serenity with winemaker Kevin Grant keeping everyone guessing as to what the components are. The idea is to distract from the varietals and give prominence to a sense of place. Kevin enjoys experimenting with the subtle impact of many grape varietals and makes sure that there is not only one recipe for the production of Serenity. More is more when it comes to blending and wine drinkers are fortunate to enjoy a variety of red wines crafted artistically by the winemakers of the Cape.

ow in its third year Hermanus FynArts 2015 offers a bumper programme from 5 to 16 June and a long line-up of a few familiar, and a great many new, faces and a couple of new and exciting twists.

Once again this fusion of Arts Festival and Winter School, with a focus on the visual arts, will include an extensive mix of exhibitions, films, music recitals, concerts, talks, workshops, demonstrations, tastings and pairings, dinners, children’s programmes and more. Following the success of the Sculpture on the Cliffs exhibition last year, a new exhibition with the theme Biodiversity will be presented on the Hermanus Cliff Path from 6 June until well into 2016. There will also be three exhibitions of sculpture - one at Benguela Cove on the R43 approaching Hermanus, and two along the Hermanus Wine Route one at Whalehaven Winery and the other at Creation wine farm. Seven wine farms in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley will host special exhibitions that include painting, glass and ceramics as well as the finalists in the Tollman Bouchard Finlayson Art Award.

Fifteen art exhibitions will be found in the centre of Hermanus with the premier exhibition, (In) the Nature of Things, in the old Synagogue building. Eleven art galleries in town will each host a special exhibition during FynArts. Other venues for exhibitions include the Windsor Hotel, The Marine and the Municipal Auditorium. Recognising the contribution of immigrants to the South African way of life and art, Hermanus FynArts will in future include a fine thread in its programme connecting one other country. The Italian Connection is the first such association and the FynArts 2015 programme includes a number of events that acknowledge Italy and Italian culture in art, music, food and wine. Another addition to the programme is a Pop-up Festival Kitchen installed by Mac Brothers with twice daily demonstrations by top and well-known chefs at the Windsor Hotel. Full details on FynArts 2015 are on www.hermanusfynarts.co.za and tickets can be purchased at the Hermanus Tourism Office or online from Webtickets.

HERMANUS FYNARTS FUND

T

he Hermanus FynArts Fund was launched this year with the long-term aim to establish a School of the Arts for the Overstrand in Hermanus. In the shorter term the aim is to widen audiences at concerts and at workshops to include people who for socio-economic reasons are not able to take part in the festival. Apart from individual support, Hermanus Property Management is the first corporate to have pledged its support to the Fund. In doing so director Alex van der Sluys said that Hermanus is a gem in so many ways – not only for its location and as a famous whale watching venue but also for its nature diversity, infrastructure, beaches, climate, various outdoor sporting facilities, people and now also FynArts. Author and journalist, Harvey Tyson is the first contributor in a personal capacity. “Approaching its third year Hermanus FynArts has proven that it is sustainable. This hugely successful initiative was born in our town, is organised in our town and brings wonderful new development opportunities for people, art, business and tourism. That is why we decided to support the Fund and to help in bringing these opportunities to all our communities – it is just the right thing to do.” The profits of this year’s FynArts gourmet dinner at Benguela Manor will be paid into the Fund as well as any surplus in the FynArts account after the festival. Details on the Fund can be obtained from the festival director at fynarts@hermanus.co.za.

Wine Plus tutored tastings

A

s in previous years, The Marine will be the place to be for wine enthusiasts during Hermanus FynArts 2015. Synonomous with the art of gracious living, fine dining and celebrated wines, The Marine will play host to a six-day Wine Plus festival series of tutored tastings presented by masters of the wine-making craft. This event, which runs from 6 to 11 June, will be curated by Melvyn Minnaar. “The more you think about it (and drink it!), the more wine resembles and echoes art,” says Minnaar. “So an art festival seems to invite wine by default. We’re all set to follow up on the fun of last year with another crisp, cheerful look at the creative edge of wine in South Africa right now.” Each event of 45 minutes is a stand-alone tasting which will be informative but not too technical, and framed by a fine selection of wines to taste. Visitors to Hermanus FynArts can select any one of the events or attend the whole series to attain an overall impression of the state of wine art. Day 1 – Saturday 6 June 15:00-17:00 Showtime: Hemel-en-Aarde on earth Local producers will present their finest wines from our great valley and be on hand to discuss their cellar artistry. Day 2 – Sunday 7 June 12:00 & 17:00 (repeat) Sparkling up a storm Meet Pieter Ferreira, cellarmaster at Graham Beck, and bubbly expert Alan Mullins who will talk about and present their selection of the finest Cap Classique wines. Day 3 – Monday 8 June 12:00 - Italians and immigrants Caroline Rillema, the country’s finest-tuned Italian aficionado, well-known importer and expert, will present a selection of local and Italian wines. 17:00 – High Spirits Giorgio Dalla Cia, the grand master from Friuli, pioneer and grappa prophet, will introduce the magic and mystery of this famous, lingering spirit. Day 4 – Tuesday 9 June 12:00 – The Wild Ones International wine expert and consultant Tinus van Niekerk will present a selection of the ‘wild white one’ to expose the soul of Sauvignon blanc. 17:00 – More Wild Ones Neil Ellis, the man with a wine name without equal in the Cape exposes the cellar challenge of the ‘red wild one’, Cabernet Sauvignon. Day 5 – Wednesday 10 June 12:00 – Magic in the mix Bruce Jack, who has traveled the wine world widely and worked at big and small wineries, introduces the fine art of blending white wines. 17:00 – Magic in the mix Wine master and author Tim James traces the front line of red blends as they become more and more interesting. Day 6 – Thursday 11 June 12:00 Five stars and more Philip van Zyl, the editor of the famous Platter’s SA Wine Guide, undertakes a top star trek and explains what it takes for a wine to earn the top rating in the country. L

a Vierge, French for ‘The Virgin’, is situated on the Hermanus Wine Route and nestles in the folds of the breathtaking Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The architecturally exciting building houses the tasting room and restaurant which are reached by way of an elevated walkway through the double-volume winery, giving visitors a clear view of the activities in the cellar below. Large expanses of glass in the restaurant maximize the spectacular views and the Champagne Veranda provides a romantic setting for enjoying all La Vierge has to offer. Grapes are sourced from our own lovingly tended vineyards on the farm Babylon in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, characterized by long cool summers influenced by the close proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. Close planting of the vines in Burgundian style with no irrigation, together with our winemaking philosophy of minimum interference and manipulation in the cellar, enable winemaker Gerhard Smith to craft a range of highly individualistic wines that present a true reflection of site and terroir. The unspoilt beauty and provenance of our virgin terroir are reflected in the Garden of Eden theme of our branding, suggesting a lush verdant paradise with all the purity, simplicity, innocence and temptation of life’s beginnings. Our crest represents Adam and Eve pondering the serpent and the apple, and the design language of our wines reflects a deep symbolism. This is a place where we celebrate our wines of desire with an abandon that evokes these famous words by Oscar Wilde: “The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it.” La Vierge’s range includes the La Vierge Noir (Pinot Noir), La Vierge Collection Seduction Pinot Noir, Original Sin Sauvignon Blanc, Jezebelle Chardonnay, Last Temptation Weisser Riesling, Anthelia Syrah, Nymphomane (Bordeaux-style blend) and Satyricon (Italian Blend). The tasting room is open daily from 10: - 17:00. Heading up the kitchen of The Restaurant & Venue @ La Vierge are the new owners, Ultimate Braaimaster Champions Yusuf Sujee and Stephen Mandes. Both are accomplished chefs who are dedicated to creating delicious, fresh, quality dishes to complement your experience at La Vierge. An infusion of locally sourced ingredients, a wealth of skill and experience, and a natural passion for food has resulted in a tantalizing menu to tempt visitors. The restaurant is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 – 16:00. Booking is essential. Call 028 313 2007 or email restaurant@lavierge.co.za. La Vierge is a popular wedding venue for brides with style and pizzazz, welcoming numbers from 25 – 120. The chefs will design a menu specifically to suit your budget and taste. La Vierge is situated 6,7km from the Sandbaai intersection on the R320 to Caledon. Call 028 313 0130 or send an email to info@lavierge.co.za. Visit www.lavierge.co.za.

During Hermanus FynArts from 5-16 June, La Vierge will host a ceramic exhibition ‘Birds in the City’, with artworks designed by Heidi Snaith, founder of Or-gari Golden Safari and painted by Clement Mkhize.

THE ITALIAN CONNECTION

n recognition of Italian immigrants’ contribution to the arts and the South African way of life, this year’s FynArts festival includes a number of events which follow this fine thread to Italy. Several local restaurants will also be offering at least one FynArts Italian dish for the duration of the festival. To get a glimpse into the wonderful world of Italian cuisine, we popped in to Fabio’s Ristorante, the only restaurant in the Overberg acclaimed as authentically Italian by being awarded the prestigious seal, the Ospitalità Italiana, by the Italian Chamber of Commerce. Owner Fabio Lenci believes that the main characteristic of Italian cuisine is its simplicity, and the restaurant’s menu reflects his deep respect for traditional dishes. Fabio’s family hails from the town of Lecco on the shores of Lake Como in northern Italy, and he immigrated to South Africa as a young boy with his parents and two brothers. He was always passionate about food and learnt the art of authentic Italian cooking from his mother, who owned several restaurants. However, he ended up in the corporate world before swopping life in Pretoria for the life of a restauranteur in Hermanus in 2007. “I was here on holiday with my family when I heard of a restaurant for sale,” says Fabio. “I immediately knew that this was my destiny.” We were invited into the kitchen of this warm, hospitable and down-to-earth restaurant to join chef Fabio (aka ‘the Don’) and chef Daniel de Wet Laing (aka ‘Bullet’) as they were preparing gnocchi and filled pasta. For the gnocchi, potatoes were boiled with the skin on and left to cool before they were peeled and mashed. An egg and a generous amount of parmesan were then mixed into the mashed potatoes, with salt and pepper added. Flour was added and the potato dough was kneaded until it had reached the right consistency – it had to be light and fluffy but elastic enough to knead, and not too dry and brittle. When asked for measurements, Fabio just smiled and said this was cooking with feeling, not recipes – “cucina artigianale” (artisinal cooking). The potato dough was rolled into a long sausage shape and divided into several pieces, which were again each rolled into a thinner sausage shape, before being cut into little pieces. Each little piece was then expertly placed on the thumb while rolling a knife over the top to make fine grooves. This helps the gnocchi to absorb more of the sauce or topping it will be served with – in this case it was Fabio’s delicious traditional Bolognaise. Next up was the filled pasta, which started with Fabio kneading the dough and running it through the pasta machine several times until it was thin enough to cut out the circular shapes. Before folding the circles of dough into panzerotti and angeolotti shapes, a spoonful of the filling was carefully placed in the centre. The edges of the panzerotti were pressed down with a fork to form a pattern, while the angeolotti was expertly folded over to form a sort of decorative cone. The filling for the pasta pockets was fungi porcini e vittelo (porcini mushrooms and veal). Fabio uses dried porcini because of the intensity of the flavour and, after soaking them, they were fried with onions, herbs and seasoning. This mixture was then combined with eggs, breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese, and added to the roasted veal which had been left to cool before being pulled apart. The panzerotti was served with a classic home-made pomodoro (tomato) sauce, which Fabio said forms the most fundamental part of Italian cooking – deceptively simple and simply delicious. But the real knock-out for me was the angeolotti served with burnt sage butter, which really allowed the mushroom and veal flavours of the filling to come forward. To experience these Italian delights for yourself, be sure to visit Fabio’s Ristorante during FynArts – or any day of the year. Buon Appetito! Fabio’s Ristorante, 60 St Peter’s Lane, Hermanus. Open seven days a week from 11:00 to 23:00 (kitchen closes at 21:30). Tell: 028 313 0532.

The Heroes of Hermanus

O

ur rescuers are just ordinary people. They are someone’s brother, husband, father or neighbour. When they get a call they leave their families without hesitation to go out and help a stranger.

founder members, Michael Clarke is still very active and is currently the Chairman of the fundraising committee. Ian Alton and George Stoddart are also still with the station.

Hermanus has 17 of these heroes who offer their time, skill and expertise, often at the risk of their own lives, to keep the waters of Walker Bay safe for everyone. Above all they do it free of charge.

In 1979 Henk Henn became a crew member with Station 17 and in 1988 Henk succeeded Graham as Station Commander. Over the years the station has seen many crew come and go and the station grew from a single vessel station to its current stature.

The 17 volunteers at the Hermanus Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) are part of a larger country wide network that saves lives on South African waters. NSRI Station 17 in Hermanus was established in 1978 by Graham Westcott and fellow Rotarians. Graham was the first station commander of Station 17. The first crew members to join the NSRI in Hermanus were Ian Alton, Steve Baron, Michael Clarke, Guy Clarke, J.Lund, Leo Miller, Peter Sutcliffe, Chris Verges and George Stoddart. Of these

The station now has a 4.2m rubber duck (Le Jenmar 2) for inshore operations, a 5.5m semi rigid inflatable (Hunters Gold Rescuer) that can operate up to 15nm from shore and a 10m Brede class deep sea vessel (South Star) that can operate up to 40 nm from shore with a range of 140 nautical miles. They cover an area of 23 nautical miles from Hermanus to Hangklip and 40 nautical miles from Hermanus to Quin Point. The station also has a special whale disentanglement kit that was sponsored by the Village Square and the Two Oceans Whale Festival. Henk was at the helm as Station Commander for 27 years and during April 2015 decided to step down and hand over to Deon Langenhoven who was Deputy Station Commander. Deon has been with the station for 19 years and has now taken over with Jean le Roux as Deputy. The station has an active group of 17 young volunteers who man the station every Wednesday evening and Saturday afternoon. Should you be interested to join as a volunteer you can contact the base on 028 3123180 or come down to the station on a Saturday to see what they do. They have a range of positions at the station and if you feel that you have something to offer, please come and meet the crew. Look out for a special new initiative in the next edition of Village Explorer to assist Station 17 with their fund raising efforts.

Dance with the art of Sheena Ridley

V

isitors to the FynArts Celebration in Hermanus will have the pleasure of viewing an exhibition entitled Dance by the acclaimed South African contemporary artist and sculptor Sheena Ridley in the beautiful setting of the newly renovated Benguela Cove tasting room.

Renowned for her large ferro cement sculptures, palette knife oils, and gentle pastels visitors will be able to amble between her sculptures in the garden on to the tasting room where her paintings and pastels will be on display. Sheena’s paintings and sculptures focus on movement and stance, influenced by local settings. Her modernistic figures display clever use of light and shade, often with a touch of delightful humour. "My initial feeling for sculpture in a garden setting came from seeing the sculptures in various exhibitions in and around Harare; The National Gallery of Zimbabwe, and the Chapungu Sculpture Park, says Sheena. “My favourite sculpture is one of serpentine stone by Bernard Matemera, titled Man Changing into Hippo at the National Gallery Zimbabwe. It is a large piece – 1.5m of very smooth serpentine with beautiful poise and has a humorous side too." Born in Harare, Zimbabwe 1964 Sheena completed high school in Johannesburg after which she moved to the Cape. She studied at Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town and worked as a scenic painter for CAPAB (now ArtsCape). Sheena has also trained as an antique porcelain restorer with David Vickers and lived in the Overberg area for nineteen years. Sheena also works in oils, which are impressionistic in style. She uses only the palette knife, concentrating on stances of the people and the wonderful light effects our weather and area treats us to. Her oil paintings of people are of movement and mood, often with a distorted or slightly askance aspect. She began working with cement as a sculptural medium in 1999. “I wanted to make huge sculptures without having to fire them. Initially I worked with clay, but then discovered that cement was a far more ideal medium.” Her sculptures are often coloured with oxides and finished in various textures. “I started experimenting with cement flooring, and this taught me a lot about the technical aspects of working with concrete. I love the fact that it’s quite flexible – that different combinations of sand and cement give you a variety of textures. On what inspires her, Sheena’s response is simply, “I’m

inspired by the way people move and stand – their body language. Although my sculptures don’t have strong facial features, the emotional aspects can be seen through the way their bodies are portrayed.”

Sheena now lives on a farm in the Klein Karoo at Kykoe, which is part of the Langkloof between Uniondale and George. After rejuvenating an old barn and outbuildings, she has opened the Langkloof Gallery and Sculpture Garden. Her sculptures are exhibited in the garden and the surrounding veld, creating a wonderful amble with plants and sculptures enhancing one another. *Opening times for the tasting room is 9:00 to 17:00.

Visitors can also join one of a series of interactive discussions with the artist: The use of palette knives in oil painting: Sheena demonstrates the use of the palette knife in this interactive presentation. You are invited to spread oil paints on prepared board and experience the advantages of this textural method of painting: 9:00 – 10:00. Monday 8th, Wednesday 10th and Friday 12th June. Max 6 persons R95pp. Armature in Sculpture: Sheena demonstrates the vital role of armature - the framework around which the sculpture is built. You are invited to interact with the placing of the support medium onto a prepared armature. This assists you in visualising the connection between inner armature and completed form. 9:00 – 10:00 Tuesday 9th, Thursday 10th June. Max 6 persons R95pp.

he tasting room at Benguela Cove has had a major facelift and now boasts double volume ceilings, a free-flowing open space with intimate sitting areas, bold art and views of the lagoon, ocean and indigenous fynbos. Add to this the blue cranes, herons and ducks, and you get the picture.

chocolates created by master chocolatier Jane Stuart sets out to enhance flavours of the wine and the chocolate and takes them to another level. According to Jane the success of a chocolate and wine pairing is based on science, since the skin of red grapes contains similar molecules to those found in the cocoa bean.

But this tasting room is first and foremost about wine. The vineyards produce wines that have a unique character. Described as easy-drinking, they are also so flavourful that they walk away with prizes. These wines are the happy result of a unique terroir.

Furthermore the estate will host two special wine tastings in May to celebrate the launch of its Pinot Noir 2014.

Of all the wine farms in the Walker Bay region, Benguela Cove is situated closest to the ocean. It is this location, with its cool air and nocturnal sea breezes and the long time grapes take to ripen here, that make for superior wines. This means starting with the easy-drinking wines like Matilda’s Secret and Moody Lagoon, and working your way to the Shiraz, which is spicy, complex and one of a kind. The tasting room also offers a delectable chocolate and wine pairing. The

The first event is on Saturday May 16th in the new tasting room of the beautiful lagoon wine estate, located at the start of the Hermanus Wine Route - and then a week later on May 23rd at the Benguela Restaurant at Lakeside Lodge, on the banks of Swartvlei Lagoon, at Sedgefield on the Garden Route.

goon, at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The south-easterly sea breeze is chilled by the Benguela Current flowing up from Antarctica,. This cools the grapes at night, after warm summer days, so the grapes ripen slowly, irrigated by above-average rainfall, for superior viniculture. The tasting notes describe the cherry and bright red berry fruits that form the backbone of the Pinot Noir 2014, whilst hints of spice and forest floor can be detected. The palate shows a suave elegance, neatly framed by polished, grainy tannins. Good balance and graceful poise are amply exhibited. For food pairing, serve it with virtually any dish but especially with lamb, coq au vin, game and rabbit.

Visitors can sample the Pinot Noir 2014 in the first flush of youth, which promises to turn voluptuous as it ages, say the estate’s winemakers. A medium-bodied wine, it already exhibits grace and power.

Visitors can enjoy the wine and cheese board and at Lakeside Lodge select from Benguela Brasserie’s extensive menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner, open seven days a week from 8:00am to 9:00pm. Resident Chef Kelly-Anne Pietersen has a growing reputation on the Garden Route for her French-inspired cooking.
