T

he Hermanus town centre is ideally explored by foot, as there are many hidden gems tucked away in attractive side streets and arcades that are mostly known only to the locals. If you can manage to tear yourself away from the touristy areas at the waterfront, you will discover little specialty shops, art galleries and eateries where you can mingle with the locals and recharge your batteries after an exhausting Christmas shopping spree.

Hermanus locals love their coffee and the following restaurants, bistros and coffee shops were recommended by them as the best places to meet up with family and friends or take a solitary break from the hustle and bustle of the festive season. EATERY

Anya’s Mum Café

The Eatery has transformed a once dull thoroughfare between Long Street and Main Road into a buzzing location where Hermanus locals meet for breakfast and coffee from early in the morning. The Spartan interior reflects the Eatery’s philosophy of simplicity and honesty; there is nothing ponsy about the décor or the food and what you will find here is unpretentious, wholesome downto-earth goodness.

At this cheerful eatery tucked away in a quiet street, “Anya’s mum” Marianne has created a home away from home. The vibe is young, fresh and fun and the wholesome food will remind you of mum’s home cooking. Take a seat on the quaint little front “stoep”, at one of the tables inside or chill out in the shady courtyard at the back.

Coffee lovers gather outside or at the open counter at the coffee bar, and inside there are rustic wooden tables as well as a large communal table that encourages you to make new friends. The menu features original and innovative breakfasts and light meals, and they serve what many believe to be the best coffee in town. At the helm in the kitchen is experienced and well-traveled chef Tullishe le Roux, who trained at Warwick’s Chef School in Onrus and came from the Lourensford Wine Estate to whip up some action in Hermanus. Their baked treats are made fresh every day by Julia Bailey and her team at their deli, Eatery Co, situated in an adjacent old fisherman’s cottage. Here you can buy their deli products, fresh bread and baked goodies, and also delicious pre-cooked meals to take home. The Eatery Co also caters for private functions, including weddings, engagements, baby showers and birthday bashes, or even a high tea with friends. Open Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 16:00 and Saturdays from 07:00 to 13:00. Long Street Arcade, Hermanus. Tel: 028 313 2970.

The cake table is filled with yummy home bakes such as carrot cake and old-fashioned cookies, scones and croissants to enjoy with your coffee. They also serve breakfast all day long and a hearty fresh dish of the day along with a Mediterranean-inspired buffet lunch that includes individual quiches rated by several locals as the best in Hermanus, spanakopita, various vegetable fritters and an array of colourful and creative salads that will appeal to the vegetarian in you. Open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 16:30 and Saturdays from 08:00 to 14:00. 5 High Street, Hermanus. Tel: 028 312 3407. Oskars

Just Pure Bistro For one of the best sea views to enjoy along with your coffee, head out to The Bistro on Marine Drive. This casually elegant bistro with its cosmopolitan ambience grew out of Tamsin Koen’s business which she launched in 2007. Just Pure is a proudly South African range of pure, all-natural skin and body care products manufactured in Hermanus and available from the Just Pure showroom inside the bistro. The French-inspired vintage chic interior invites you to linger with several magazines and newspapers, comfy couches, individual tables and a communal table from where you can relax and soak up the views. On fine days you can sit outside on the veranda with the ocean just metres away. And don’t forget to pop into the Just Pure shop for those special Christmas gifts. Tamsin sees the bistro as a natural extension of the Just Pure philosophy of returning to basics and good old-fashioned values. The imaginative and creative menu reflects a wealth of quality ingredients sourced from local farmers and growers. All the breads are hand-made with stone-ground flour by their artisan baker, and there are freshly baked croissants and pastries daily. You will certainly be tempted by the decadent cakes on display, which can be enjoyed with The Bistro’s organic Fair Trade coffee whipped up by the efficient team of baristas. Other treats include light meals and a Plat du Jour which is freshly prepared every day, an extensive selection of loose leaf teas, freshly squeezed juices, old-fashioned milkshakes and their famously rich hot chocolate. The pantry shelves are lined with goodies to take home, such as The Bistro’s own unique coffee blend, home bakes, honey, olive oils, vinaigrettes and homemade jams. For more info, go to www.justpure.co.za. Corner of Marine Drive & Park Lane, Hermanus. Tel: 028 313 0060

The mother-daughters team of Sanmarie, Ilana and Lizanne Swanepoel has turned Oskars into one of Hermanus’s best-loved eateries where patrons are invited to linger, savour and indulge in their unique brand of wholesome food. Situated in Village Square directly opposite the popular trading stalls on Market square, this is another popular meeting place for locals. The downto-earth décor inviting, with old-fashioned framed shabbyrows of used books and magazines,

is warm and tapestries and paintings, chic cushions, vintage crockery, quirky wine racks and, above all, the unmistakable aroma of freshly baked breads and cakes, and honest home cooking. Oskars is open all day for breakfast, lunch, tea, coffee and dinner. Everything on the menu is homemade and freshly prepared every day, right down to the pies and croissants, mayonnaise and salad dressing. And when it comes to food and drink, moderation is not a word that features in the Swanepoel ladies’ vocabulary.

They serve a staggering selection of imaginative and inspiring breakfasts, and refreshments include a variety of teas, coffees, cordials, raw juices, smoothies and milkshakes. No one can resist their scrumptious selection of freshly baked goodies that include triple chocolate brownies, baked cheesecake, pana forté, date balls, carrot cake and apple crumble – and their melt-in-the mouth chocolate cake is reputed to be the best in Hermanus. On Saturday mornings you will find the vegetable table at Oskars brimming with fresh locally sourced produce – the perfect opportunity to stock up for the week on fresh vegetables, bread and other goodies from their bakery. Village Square, Hermanus. Tel: 028 312 3873.

eat & drink Savannah Café Savannah has been a local favourite for many years and their extensive menu ensures that you’ll be able to treat yourself here no matter what diet you are on.

Vir besprekings e-pos dieboskokboma@sonicmail.co.za of skakel 082 77 29218.

T

he summer holiday has finally arrived and that means plenty of gatherings with family and friends to celebrate the festive season. But none of us want to spend hours in the kitchen preparing lavish meals, so we approached chef Bridget Bartleman from The Tasting Room at Stanford Hills to share some recipes with us for fresh and wholesome dishes that will delight the family and impress your friends while being easy to prepare.

recipes

Asparagus salad with poached egg, prosciutto cotto and hollandaise Serves 2-4

Method

Ingredients 1 bunch green asparagus, washed 2 poached free range eggs Prosciutto cotto

Lightly poach asparagus in simmering water for 3-5min. Remove water from pan and slightly fry in butter, salt and pepper. Squeeze a drop of lemon juice at the end. Remove from the heat and let cool slightly.

For the Hollandaise: 2 egg yolks 150g salted butter 2 tbsp water Cherry tomatoes cut in halves Wild rocket

Quick and easy hollandaise: Place egg yolks in a mixing bowl. Heat butter until it boils, and slowly whisk drop for drop of the hot butter into the egg yolks. This mixture will become thick – if there are any signs

of splitting, add a dash of cold water. The mixture should be well combined once all the butter is used up. Many people use clarified butter but I like the salty extra flavour normal butter adds to the sauce. Add a dash of lemon juice and water at the end and voila. Place asparagus on serving plate. Drape prosciutto over, then the poached egg. Scatter cherry tomatoes. Drizzle with hollandaise and top with rocket.

Grilled aubergine stuffed with cream cheese and nuts served with fresh tomato and basil Serves 4-6 Ingredients 3 medium sized aubergines For the filling: 100g Cream cheese 1⁄2 cup parmesan 40g toasted mixed nuts, finely chopped 3⁄4 cup Parsley, finely chopped Pepper Topping: Cherry tomatoes cut into quarters Fresh Basil roughly chopped Method

Finely slice aubergines lengthways. Toss with salt and place in a colander over the sink – this will draw the bitterness out and prevent it from going soggy. Allow to stand for at least 30min, then pat dry with paper towel. Using a griddle pan or gas grill, grill each side of the sliced aubergine on low heat to get lovely grill lines and cook slightly through for about 2-3min on each side. Place cooked aubergine on a flat surface. Shape the cream cheese filling into mini

rugby balls. Place on the bottom end of the aubergine and carefully roll up to the top, keeping it nice and firm. Place fold side down onto a greased baking tray, sprinkle with a little olive oil and bake in the oven at 180 deg for 8-10min just until the cheese softens up. For the topping, combine chopped tomatoes and Basil. To serve, place on a serving plate. Spoon over tomato and basil topping garnish with baby leaves. Serve with grilled ciabatta slices.

Slow roasted pork belly with baked nectarine salad Serves 4-6 Ingredients 2-3kg Pork belly deboned, skin scored (tip: I get good quality pork belly from Van Blommestein Butchery – they debone and score the skin for me) 150ml apple juice 1 Knorr chicken stock pot 1 cup fresh sage, roughly chopped 1 tsp whole grain mustard 100ml water Fine salt For the baked nectarine: 4-6 firm nectarines, sliced in half and pitted Honey

Olive oil 50g Walnuts 100g Soft quality feta cheese (I prefer Soet Muis feta locally bought at the Stanford Market) cut into small cubes Wild rocket Balsamic reduction Method Place all the ingredients except the pork belly into a roasting pan. Using a tea towel pat skin of pork belly very dry. Sprinkle a generous amount of fine salt over the skin. Don’t be shy, this won’t make your dish salty it will simply make your pork belly skin

nice and crispy. Carefully place pork belly into roasting pan, making sure the liquid doesn’t cover the top. Keep some liquid behind as your roasting pan might need a top up throughout the roasting process. Roast for 3-4 hours at 180 deg on the top oven rack. Slice nectarines in half and place in a baking tray. Drizzle with honey and olive oil, and bake at 180 deg for 15-20min. Cut pork belly into square portions. Combine nectarines, feta, walnuts and rocket. Drizzle lightly with balsamic vinegar and serve alongside the pork belly.

Baked fig, walnut and honey cheese cake Serves 8-10 Ingredients For the base: 225g biscotti biscuits/ Marie biscuits 150g salted butter, softened For the filling: 450g cream cheese 1⁄2 cup castor sugar 1⁄4 cup honey 1 tbsp honey 4 free range eggs

250g whipped cream 5 whole preserved figs 1 cup walnuts Method Line a 20cm spring cake tin with baking paper and grease well. In a food processor prosess biscuits with butter until mixture resembles bread crumbs. Using your fingers flatten biscuits against cake tin sides up to the edges to form a base. Beat cream cheese, castor sugar and honey until well

combined for about 1 min with an electric mixer. Add the eggs one at a time, scraping the sides regularly until the mixture is smooth and combined. Beat in the cream on medium speed for about 1min, and add 3 chopped-up figs. Place filling in the biscuit base. Slice figs to decorate the top of the filling and sprinkle with walnuts and 1 tbsp of honey. Bake at 160 deg for 45-50min on the middle rack in the oven.

THE TASTING ROOM.... IT'S A LIFESTYLE

S

spect, but the Punts shy away from chemicals and prefer their yield to reflect what nature has given. “Weather conditions and rainfall vary,” says Wilma. “Just like wine, our harvest is different every year and reflects what nature sent our way. We never add anything.”

tanford Hills Estate is a boutique wine farm situated just outside the quaint village of Stanford that encapsulates country living at its laid-back best. The hub of the farm is The Tasting Room, housed in an old renovated farm building with a large covered veranda surrounded by a large, rolling lawn, a dam, vineyards, olive groves and fynbos. All against the hauntingly beautiful background of the Kleinrivier mountains. Under the care of the inimitable Kastners – Peter and Jami, and their young sons Jack and Alex – stopping at the Tasting Room is like joining a jovial family gathering. With patrons chattering and laughing, the serving staff efficiently dashing about and the shrieks and laughter of children filling the air, you’ll immediately feel at home.

In the kitchen chef Bridget Bartleman ensures a constant flow of down to earth decadence combined with hearty country fare. While the adults relax with good food and wine, the children can run around and explore the farm to their heart’s content. Guests tend to linger, and it’s never easy to leave. Stanford Hills has twelve hectares under vine from which Peter makes his wines: Jackson’s Pinotage, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The last 10 vintages of the Jackson’s Pinotage boast four Platter stars, with the Veldfire Pinotage and Stanford Hills Grappa, made from Pinotage husks, completing the range. The Tasting Room is open for breakfast and lunch Thursday to Monday from 08:30 to 17:00. It also provides the perfect setting for private and corporate functions, wine tasting, picnics, horse riding, hiking trails, boating, bass fishing and swimming in the dam. And if you don’t feel like leaving, there is an old manor house and five lovingly restored original farm labourers’ cottages on the farm offering cosy self-catering accommodation. ohan and Wilma Punt’s small farm in Botrivier reminds one of the saying that dynamite comes in small packages. Covering only 5,5 ha, Bakenshoogte lies on the N2 at the foot of the Houwhoek Pass and was once part of the historic Compagnesdrift farm. It is here that the Punts established their small olive grove a decade ago, and within a few years they were producing one of the most highly acclaimed Extra Virgin Olive Oils in South Africa. In 2011 the Bakenshoogte Extra Virgin Olive Oil beat many larger and more sophisticated olive oil producers by receiving a coveted double gold at the SA Olive Awards, followed by gold in both 2012 and 2013, along with being nominated as one of ABSA’s Top 5 Olive Oil producers in the country. They even feature in Italy’s FlosOlei, the definitive guide to the best olive oils in the world, where the Bakenshoogte Extra Virgin Olive Oil is described as... “elegant and ample, rich in vegetal hints of artichoke and wild chicory, together with distinct notes of aromatic herbs, especially mint and rosemary. Its taste is full and strong, characterized by a flavour of lettuce, black pepper, and a distinct almond finish.” The 2,5 ha olive grove consists of five Italian varieties – Frontoia, Leccino, Corotina, Favolosa and Nocellaro. The trees are treated with care and re-

The olives are harvested by hand and packed in small crates to ensure minimum bruising and to keep them cool on their journey to Morgenster, where the pressing is done. Surprisingly, the Punts made the decision not to supply retail outlets with their precious olive oil and prefer to sell directly to the public from their farm. “I get annoyed when retailers add a 100% mark up on our product, because value for money is very important to me,” says Wilma. “I want the consumer to get the best possible product at the best possible price.” Bakenshoogte now produces three different olive oils – the original Extra Virgin Olive Oil, one infused with lemon and one infused with herbs. They also bottle their own balsamic vinegar sourced from Modena in Italy, and their fruit tree harvest is used for making various home-made jams. Wilma also bottles green and black olives using the old-fashioned organic method which is a long process – the green (Nocellaro) olives are preserved in a salt solution for up to 9 months and the black (Calamata) olives for up to 4 months. All these products are available at the farm on weekdays from 08:00 – 17:00 and visitors are welcome on a Saturday by prior appointment. Call 028 284 9988 or visit www.bakenshoogte.co.za

How to spot a rip current:

If avoidance fails:

■ A break in the incoming pattern of waves ■ Water in a surf zone that is a different colour (often darker) to the surrounding water ■ Seaweed, bubbles or debris moving out to sea through the surf zone ■ Isolated turbulent and choppy water in the surf zone

If you are caught in a rip current stay calm. Swim slowly parallel to the shoreline or relax and let the current carry you pas the breakers until it slacks, then swim parallel to the shoreline before using waves to carry you back to the beach. Float on your back and wave one arm for help

Rip currents are not an “undertow”. They will not pull you under the water. As long as you can tread water or float you will be safe until you can escape the flow and head back to the beach. Maintain a slow and relaxed swimming pace until you reach the shore or help arrives. Other tips: ■ Ask the lifesavers about rip currents be-

fore you get in the water ■ Never swim alone ■ Let your children wear approved life jackets to play in the surf ■ Discuss rip currents and how to deal with them with your children ■ Swim only on beaches where lifesavers are on duty In case of an emergency call the Hermanus National Sea Rescue Institute on: 028 312 3180

Who we are The DVH Group is a national group of young dynamic Attorney Practices with offices situated in the Western Cape, Gauteng and Kwazulu-Natal. Each company has its own Directors specialising in Property Law, legal training, the registration of transfers & Mortgage Bonds and all aspects of Developments. On 1 June 2004 Dykes, van Heerden Inc opened offices in the Cape as part of its strategy to be “Conveyancers for South Africa.” The offices are currently operated through the firms Dykes Van Heerden Slabbert Hopkins Inc and Dykes Van Heerden (Cape) Inc and the operating partners are Louis Slabbert and Elana Hopkins. The offices are situated in Bellville but due to the fact that it is prepared to sign documents with clients at their homes or offices, it covers the entire Western Cape including the entire Peninsula, the Winelands, the Garden Route up to Plettenberg Bay, the West Coast, the Overberg, the Overstrand, the Swartland and parts of the Karoo.

Services we Offer Seeing as the DVH Group specialises in conveyancing and all other aspects of Property Law, the Directors have over the years built up vast experience in this field making us the attorneys of choice for a large client base and enabling us to assist Estate Agents and individual clients with the structuring of their transactions and the drafting of agreements, and Developers with the commercial planning, drafting of agreements and conveyancing involved with small and large free standing and sectional title developments. We are on the panels of all 4 major South African Banks to assist with the registration and cancellation of Mortgage Bonds.
