uly is known as a slow, quiet month for local businesses in Hermanus. The excitement generated by the third Hermanus FynArts celebration is a distant memory, the cold has settled in and it’s easy to become gloomy and long for better warmer days. The upside is that we locals have the town mostly to ourselves for a change, and many accommodation establishments and restaurants are offering winter specials for locals and visitors from “over the mountain”. An added bonus is that the whales have settled in the bay after their long migratory journey from the Antarctic and can now be seen from the cliff paths and all along the coast. Highly recommended is a boat-based whale-watching trip by one of our local operators which by all accounts is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This

does not have to be enjoyed exclusively by tourists but is something that local residents should also put on their must-do list this winter. With the school holidays upon us there are also wonderful nature activities for children organized by Whale Coast Conservation. Their fun holiday programme is aimed at children aged 9 – 14 years. On Tuesday 7 July there will be a Fynbos creatures model building workshop, on Wednesday 8 July an Amazing Race @ The Green House and on Thursday 9 July a coastal hike while exploring rock pools at Hoek van die Berg in Vermont. All these activities take place from 10:00 – 13:00 and the cost is only R50 per child. For more information, contact Dr. Anina Lee on 028 316 2527 or send an email to wcc@ocf.org.za.

And when the cold sets your tummy rumbling and you feel like indulging in hearty comfort food and good wine, turn to our feature in this month’s Wineland’s Explorer on where to dine this winter. Each of these restaurants are well worth the trip and offer a great destination for a day out with family or friends. There are also plenty of heartwarming activities and outings to undertake this month and you’ll find all the details in our Village Explorer Events Diary on page 3, and the Winelands Events Diary and Sport Diary on pages 10 & 11 of the Winelands Explorer. Remember that here is still plenty to look forward to this winter, with the Hermanus Wine & Food Fair, the Kalfiefees and the Hermanus First Fridays Artwalk all returning in August. Until then, keep warm and enjoy the slow season!

hat is it about the First Friday each month in Hermanus? Why do residents, weekenders and those from as far afield as Stellenbosch and Swellendam sashay through to our dorp to share in these art events launched last year with such success and with the participation of all central art galleries? Could it be just locals and the lure of free drinks? Not impossible but rather a mean-spirited view; there has certainly been satisfying buy-in by almost all concerned in this vibrant promotion. The town is abuzz with strollers from late afternoon around 5pm until 8 or later. An Art Walk map is a good thing to pick up at your first port of call. It lists all the galleries and you can stroll from one to another, checking out the works and the people, having a glass of wine here, a snack there, till you are sated. You may meet artists – sometimes wielding their brushes – and you will certainly interact with colourful characters. The whole idea is to break down the sometimes forbidding – for the uninitiated – myth of the elitist art gallery.

In Cape Town, the concept known there as “Last Thursdays” has been a winner. The plan is to replicate it from June in Johannesburg, too. Slowly – Capetonians are not known as early adopters - it has become a regular date for art lovers who relish the easy-going jol. Now the galleries are thronged and you battle to find a table at a restaurant in the gallery precinct if you haven’t booked. On the local scene, Terry Kobus of Originals and Liz Coates of Pure South enticed our gallerists to plot and to plan, to splash out with orange First Friday livery on shop fronts and to conceive fresh themes each month. With persistence, good humour, loads of chutzpah (and more than a hint of smooth diplomacy) everyone who has a stake in Hermanus as Art Destination was cajoled into working together.

Jenny Jackson @ Gallery 19

If you have not yet participated in the monthly passeggiata*, you have a treat Liz Coates and Terry Kobus hand over the in store. Tips from a regular: It may be a donation raised from HFF’s Night of 1000 mistake to try and do all thirteen gallerDrawings to Anina Lee from Whale Coast ies in one evening. Save some for next Conservation time. Five minutes is not enough to take in all that a gallery has to offer, especially if you are looking to broaden your taste in art and not just staying with the safe and familiar. Go with a couple of friends and do have a designated driver or, at very least, someone who will remember where you left your car. Last word from Jenny Jackson of Gallery 19 in High Street. “We put a lot of thought into each month’s event, trying to inject a sense of playfulness and helping visitors to feel active participants rather than passive spectators.” Indeed, Jenny, that is it. The gallerists may keep open late, offering as much refreshment as they see fit, but without the art-loving peeps, the interaction and the fun, it would be nothing. After a recess for winter and FynArts, the next HFF is on 7 August. Catch them on Facebook. And Viva Hermanus First Fridays, VIVA! * Passeggiata: (Ital.) “a leisurely walk taken in the evening for the purpose of socialising.”

Remember to like us on Facebook/Village Explorer for regular updates on happenings in and around your area. And enjoy this lovely recipe from Leopard's Leap for Glühwein. Cheers!

Glühwein Recipe Glühwein is synonymous with Christmas in Europe where its beautiful warm flavours of spice help to thaw the winter’s ice and snow. And although it might not be Christmas, the South African winter can definitely do with a warming winter drink. recently visited several establishments from Hermanus and the Overberg to the Elgin Valley, and Stellenbosch and Franschhoek in the Cape Winelands that will not only warm your heart but also satisfy the heartiest of winter appetites.

While many restaurants are closing their doors this month for a much-needed winter break, others are embracing the slow season by creating wondrous winter menus and special dining experiences at irresistible prices. Village Explorer / Winelands Explorer

So don’t let the weather get you down or stop you from bundling into the car and meeting up with family or friends for that special winter meal accompanied by premium wines. Take note of the many special offers available from the featured restaurants and you’ll know that there’s no better time to spoil yourself than the Cape winter.

ith the Western Cape firmly in the grip of winter we find ourselves inclined to retire indoors and seek refuge from the cold in the form of full-bodied red wines, hearty comfort food and the warmth of cosy fireplaces. But that doesn’t mean that you have to stay cooped up at home for there are many wonderful destination restaurants out there where you can enjoy exactly that.

FRANSCHHOEK

Pierneef à La Motte

Trendy and traditional A

s the winner of the Best Food and Wine Matching Experience for 2013 and 2015 at the Drinks International Wine Tourism Awards, La Motte Wine Estate in Franschhoek takes the exploration of food and wine combinations to a whole new level this winter. Celebrating her first year as Executive Chef at Pierneef à La Motte, Michelle Theron has conjured up an inspired winter fest. Michelle explains the restaurant’s modern interpretation of traditional Winelands flavours and styles of cooking: “Winter is perfect for the slow-cooked comfort of traditional Cape Winelands Cuisine. But patrons that enjoy staying up to date with culinary trends will also appreciate current influences such as the use of heritage grains and techniques of fermentation. Heritage grains often take the place of the expected starches while whey and buttermilk are used instead of rich, concentrated jus and creamy sauces, adding an interesting alternative without compromising heartiness.” Winter favourites such as cider-braised pork are served with salted caramel, whey-braised celeriac and Granny Smith piquant sauce, while the slow-cooked lamb comes with eggplant molasses, warm curried lentil salad and mint-infused sour milk puree. For those embracing winter with all its expected richness, cumin-scented beef shin ravioli is served with charred bell pepper and tomato fondue, smoked sweet potato, mushroom and parsnip, while Cloete Afrikaner beef steak with warm tomato and potato-and-olive ragout should also do the trick.

Not to be missed is the La Motte Evening of Vintage Wine & Venison. The estate’s passionate wine and culinary team will treat guests to an evening of vintage wine and venison in Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant, presenting a 5-course menu beautifully paired with exclusive older vintages from the La Motte Vinoteque. Chef Michelle will present a menu including bourbon-glazed duck, fermented honey and mustard rabbit galantine, mushroom-roasted venison loin and Karoo blue and dried date verrine. Cellarmaster Edmund Terblanche will give insights into the paired wines, which include 1995 La Motte Shiraz, 2007 La Motte Pierneef Shiraz Viognier and 1995 La Motte Millennium. Sharing La Motte’s passion for regional cuisine and cultural heritage, Professor Johann Kirsten, mastermind behind the legal protection and certification for Karoo Lamb as well as head of the Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development at the University of Pretoria, will present a talk on the evening, focusing on the importance and conservation of regional food as part of our cultural and food heritage. •The Evening of Vintage Wine and Venison will take place on 20 August at 18:30 and the cost is R490 per person. Reservations are essential and can be made at 021 876 8800 or pierneef@la-motte.co.za

For the duration of winter, a special offering of pies will be included on the daily menu. Pies date from the middle ages and with the limited ovens and equipment of the times, perfecting a pie required skill and were often used to impress and to showcase technique. The pie offering will be based on traditional Cape Winelands pies such as chicken with boiled eggs and preserved lemon and pastry covering meat on the bone such as oxtail.

With the variety of seasonal vegetables available from the estate’s garden, Pierneef à La Motte’s menus always include a beautiful selection of vegetable dishes and, in this instance, a deep-red wood-roasted beetroot soup with hung yoghurt and dill or warm farm vegetable salad with fruited rye, while the millet and honey-and-buttermilk dressing will ensure a good dosage of vitamins for the cold months. Vegetarian options include a spiced pear tart with porcini-and-port puree and onion and blue cheese salad as well as a gluten-free savoury pancake with cabbage-and-quinoa rolls and kale-and-almond pesto. With the recent appointment of Vicky Gurovich as Senior Sous Chef (Pastry), the ever-so-important winter’s dessert menu presents the classics in an unexpected way. The traditional cheese course is represented by “That’s so cheesy”, a decadent verrine of Dalewood fromage, parsnip puree, pickled parsnips and fennel seed crackers. Bread and butter pudding made from chocolate and banana bread also incorporates Valrhona chocolate cream, roasted peanuts and banana ice-cream. The Pierneef à La Motte winter menu offers everything that is expected and considerably more: it is warming, comforting, trendy, traditional and comes with carefully paired La Motte wine suggestions to complete the taste experience.

Please note that Pierneef à La Motte will be closed for a winter break from Monday, 13 July and will reopen on Friday, 7 August.

Pierneef à La Motte’s hours: Lunch: Tuesday – Sunday Breakfast: Saturday & Sunday Dinner: Thursday – Saturday: (summer months), Friday & Saturday (winter months) • Reservations are recommended and can be made at 021 876 8800 or pierneef@la-motte.co.za

4 STELLENBOSCH FRANSCHHOEK

At the historic Boschendal Estate, situated at the foot of Helshoogte between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, visitors can enjoy their new casual winter dinner programme of ‘No menu, one dish meals’ which gives guests the chance to visit different venues for an evening meal over the course of each week. Executive chef Christiaan Campbell, who is spearheading the renewal of Boschendal’s dining experiences, focuses on providing flavourful and nourishing food that is even more warming and comforting during the colder months. On Mondays it is home-made pasta in the Deli, Tuesdays see the Bakery team showing off their pizza-making skills, and on Wednesday nights guests can sit down to a filling winter casserole in the new Werf Restaurant. Thursday night’s special offering is a traditional dish in the historic Manor House’s kitchen. The cost for Monday to Thursday is R95 for the main course, excluding service fee and beverages. On Friday and Saturday nights guests are back in The Werf Restaurant for the a-la-carte menu which features Boschendal's own farm produce and grass-fed Angus beef. Christiaan’s menu changes regularly to reflect what is seasonal and available from the gardens. Guests staying over on the Farm get preferential treatment when booking, but locals and other visitors are welcome, depending on availability. Reserve your table at reservations@boschendal.co.za or call 021 870 4274.

VIVE LA FRANCE

‘GINSPIRATION’

Boschendal is getting into the mood for the Bastille Festival with French-themed food and wine tastings in the different venues.

Executive chef Christiaan Campbell and Roger Jorgensen, producer of handcrafted spirits including the fabulous Jorgensen’s Gin, are pooling their talents to match a curated selection of Gins with a 3-course meal at the newly renovated Werf Restaurant on Saturday, 18 July from 18:30.

The Wine Tasting Room believes that “letting them eat cake” is the right answer this time around, and is presenting an impressive Croquembouche, created by pastry chef Corien Hattingh, which will be paired with sparkling wine for R50 pp. Another popular option is the chocolate and bubbly tasting at R70 pp. Executive Chef Christiaan Campbell will also create French-style Bistro dishes like a country-style Coq au Vin or grass-fed Boeuf Bourguignon, which can be enjoyed with a glass or two of good red wine.

The cost is R450 pp for the food and gin pairing (excluding other beverages and service charges). For reservations: werf@ boschendal.co.za or 021 870 4206. Boschendal is offering a discounted price on accommodation in their luxury cottages for those diners wishing to overnight at the farm. Visit www.boschendal.co.za to find out more.

ELGIN

Since its official launch in 2012 the Elgin Wine Route has become a favourite destination for those who like to wander off the beaten track. In contrast with the more genteel, traditional wine routes of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek, the Elgin Valley is a wild frontier with rugged mountains, verdant forests and rolling hills covered in a patchwork of fruit orchards, olive groves and vineyards. Turning in to The Valley Road off the N2 will bring you to South Hill, a small privately owned farm where you will be warmly welcomed at their tasting room and art gallery / restaurant. Surrounded by a lush garden dotted with sculptures you can laze on comfortable couches on the lawn overlooking the vineyards or seek refuge inside where the cosy fireplace will keep you toasty on cold winter days. The tasting room is open for walk-in tastings seven days a week from 10:00 – 16:00 and bistro-style breakfast and lunch are served in the restaurant from Wednesday to Sundays 08:30 – 15:00. Owners Kevin and Sandy King have transformed South Hill from a neglected apple and pear producer to an exclusive boutique wine farm producing cool climate wines of elegance and finesse. They currently have 28ha under vine from which winemaker Sean Skibbe produces a range of South Hill wines that includes Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Rosé and MCC Blanc de Blanc, while the exclusive Kevin King range consists of interesting blends and single varieties Pinot Noir and Malbec. In the kitchen chef Fleur van den Hoogen, who lives on a neighbouring farm, works her magic with fresh seasonal produce to offer a small a la carte menu of down-to-earth goodness such as a heavenly home-made chicken pie, pure rib-eye beef burger or wild mushroom risotto. Highly recommended is their 5 course tasting menu which gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy each dish with a perfectly paired wine at R425 per head. Just some of the delights to be sampled are fish, mussels and prawns in a white wine and basil cream paired with Kevin King Bassey Semillon / Sauvignon Blanc, medallions of smoked duck breast with black cherry and port reduction paired with Kevin King Bazza Pinto Noir, and baked Camembert with berry poached pear served with the delightful South Hill Rosé. Summer or winter, South Hill is the kind of place where you’ll want to linger. It provides the perfect setting for that special occasion, and they cater for weddings, corporate events or any celebratory occasion. The guesthouse offers four-star luxury, family-friendly accommodation along with the Cellar Garden Suite and the Pumphouse Honeymoon Cottage. Contact the restaurant for more details on their Christmas in July dinner on 25 July and check out our Village Explorer events diary on page 3 for details on their Wednesday Movie Supper evenings. South Hill will also be the venue for a Trail Hounds Run on 11 July – for more information turn to our Winelands Explorer sport diary on page 7.

WINTER DINING BOTRIVIER

GABRIëLSKLOOF If the thought of dining on hearty country cuisine in front of a roaring fireplace on a beautiful Overberg farm appeals to you, look no further than Gabriëlskloof. This award-winning winery and restaurant is situated on the Swartrivier Road which turns off from the N2 at Dassiesfontein, just outside of Botrivier on the way to Caledon. Estate owner Bernhard Heyns and his wife Sjarlene bought the farm in 2001 and together with farm manager Barry Anderson set out to establish the vineyards from which premium wines have been produced since 2009. The cellar, tasting room, chapel and restaurant are arranged around a tranquil courtyard garden with a manicured lawn and two reflective ponds. There is an unmistakable emphasis on quality, but Gabriëlskloof’s particular brand of understated elegance is at once homely, inviting and relaxing. The interior of the restaurant, with its high ceilings and exposed rafters, is dominated by an open hearth where you will find a warming fire on cold days, and when the sun is shining the restaurant spills over to a large covered veranda overlooking the courtyard garden. Here chef Frans Groenewald and his wife Mariaan, who is the restaurant and banquet manager, welcome guests to enjoy their down-to-earth country cuisine prepared with a sophisticated flair. Fresh seasonal produce is sourced locally from the farm, friendly neighbours and local artisans, and includes Gabriëlskloof’s award-winning olive oil and honey, and Anysbos goat’s cheese from the farm next door. “Our new winter menu embraces our country roots and we allow each ingredient to speak for itself,” says Frans, who assisted in designing the kitchen from scratch and has been at the helm since the restaurant opened its doors six years ago. “Unpretentious yet elegant cuisine with a rustic charm and a touch of nostalgia, cooked from the heart to feed the appetite and the soul,” is how Frans describes his winter menu. And what can be more comforting than his signature slow-roasted Botrivier leg of lamb served with slaphakskeentjies (pickled onions) and heavenly Hemel-en-Aarde wheat and pumpkin risotto, or the drunken Elgin free-range duck au Vin with dauphinoise potatoes and vegetables. For a lighter lunch or as a starter you can also enjoy olive oil poached trout served on a warm sweet potato and chick pea salad or the popular slow-roasted bone marrow and deboned oxtail served with a roosterkoek. Vegetarians will not feel left out in the cold and can choose from various options such as a silky potato, artichoke and truffle soup, lentil bobotie served with coconut rice and sambals, or mushroom and goat’s cheese ravioli served with a mushroom and leek broth. And don’t forget to leave room for a delectable dessert such as souskluitjies (sweet dumplings) served with orange preserve, meringue and crème Anglais, or malva and poached pear tartlet served with hazelnut praline and vanilla ice cream. The entire Gabiëlskloof range of wines is offered by the glass or bottle, along with other wines from fellow Botrivier wine producers. The restaurant also offers scrumptious breakfasts and a deli menu with light meals such as gourmet hamburgers, paninis and platters. The restaurant is open from 09:00 – 17:00 every day except on Tuesdays. Their Winter Special offers any two a la carte meals at R165 per person and a three course indulgence at R195 per person. To book, call 028 284 9865 or send an email to restaurant@gabrielskloof.co.za

5 HERMANUS

La Pentola

The best special offer this winter surely has to come from La Pentola Hermanus, where diners are seduced not only by patron-chef Shane Sauvage’s singular style of fusion cuisine but also by the breathtaking ocean views. With a special winter menu offering two courses for R75 or a three course indulgence for only R105, there has never been a better time to visit La Pentola on the Hermanus waterfront. And as an added bonus you might even get to spot a whale in the bay from the comfort of your dining table at no extra cost.

Shane is a larger-than-life chef with a hearty appetite for life and a passion for cooking. He exudes charm and generosity, and he loves nothing more than taking care of people and making them feel special. That includes feeding them, something he has done for as long as he can remember. As a chef he likes to push the boundaries and think out of the box, which is why he continues to develop creative recipes based on the unique combination of ingredients and flavour sensations. Shane is also the owner of the critically acclaimed La Pentola Pretoria, which has been going strong for 20 years. About 17 yeras ago he realised another life-long dream by relocating to Hermanus with his family. After cooking up a storm at the La Vierge Restaurant on the Hermanus Wine Route, he decided to branch out by opening La Pentola Hermanus on Marine Drive in 2012. His third cookbook will be out soon, following on The Edge of Fusion (2007) and In Fusion (2009), which earned him that year’s Gourmand Award for the Best Cookbook by a chef. Several of the dishes featured in his books are available on La Pentola’s a la carte menu. The special winter lunch menu is available every day and offers a choice of starters such as South African style butternut soup or hot baby marrow carpaccio, while the mains include Limpopo chicken which consists of tender chicken breast pan-fried in butter with ginger, aromatic curry spices and macadamia nuts steamed in white wine and refreshed with thyme and cream. Other mains include fish and pasta dishes, while the desserts are sure to bring comfort on a cold winter’s day in the form of baked apple pancake, crème brulee or vanilla ice cream with a hot home-made Danish chocolate vanilla sauce. The friendly ambience, the warmth of the fireplace and the gorgeous views combined with the innovative cuisine and extensive wine list are sure to lift your spirits on even the dreariest of winter days. A PASSION FOR PROPERTY, A DESIRE FOR QUALITY “

We intend to be more than just business owners in Hermanus. We have moved to this beautiful town to build our lives here. We want to become not only residents but be part of the community. We are here for the long run,” says Lee Greeff and Nikita Pierce, the new owners of the Just Property Group in Hemanus. Lee and Nikita took over the reins at Just Property Group on the 1st of June this year and they already have big plans with the aim of creating a refreshing experience for all. “We are planning our official opening in August 2015 and inviting everyone to come and join us. “Our goal is to have raving fans and not just clients, we believe the only way to do business is to have our clients walking out the door saying wow!” “But this will not only be a goal that’s written down on a piece of paper. Lee and I will be getting our hands dirty together with our team. We are going to work alongside them to make this vision a reality for not only us but also for our clients,” says Nikita. “I have been a Principal for over 8 years and in that time I have gained hands on experience and in-depth knowledge of the property industry. Every day there are new challenges and experiences to be learnt and every day we are adding to our knowledge bank and we strive to pass that onto those around us as well as learn from those we work with. I am currently Principal of Both the Hermanus and Amanzimtoti branch in KZN," says Lee. According to Nikita she believes she and Lee make a formidable team. “We bring different facets to the company and yet we have the same goal in mind. As Branch Manager my goal is to create a fun and supportive culture within the office environment, by always being an inspiration to my team and a support mechanism. I strongly believe by growing people you grow your business as it is the people that grow your business resulting in a synergy between company and client.”

According to Lee property has become a way of life. “My mother owned a property company in Mtunzini (KZN), so the business and the love for working in this field is in my blood. You can almost say, property runs in my veins,” he says. After studying Import & Export as well as Marketing, the 30 year old Lee started the Just Property branch in Amanzimtoti, which now employs more than 14 people. “It is because of the success of this branch that I have been afforded the opportunity to take over the Hermanus branch.” Nikita, who studied not only Brand Management and Fashion design but also Business risk Management, is the Branch Manager of the Hermanus branch. After first starting her career in online marketing at SEO7k in the UK she opened up a branch for the company in Johannesburg together with owning Socialite – an online marketing and Design Company. She came into property via marketing and marketing property companies before turning to recruitment and training. Both Lee and Nikita are young and vibrant people with a passion for people, business, property and the communities in which they operate. “We want to revitalize and refresh the property industry in Hermanus. We care deeply about the well-being of our clients and about quality of service." The Just Property Group Hermanus covers Rooi Els , Pringle bay, Betty’s Bay, Kleinmond, Caledon, Greyton, Villiersdorp, De Kelders, Gaansbaai, Kleinbaai, Danger Point and Pearly Beach, offering a full range of property services, residential sales, residential letting, commercial letting and commercial sales.
