It was along the DUBAI CREEK that the Maktoum Dynasty settled in the early 19th century and began Dubai’s transformation from a sleepy fishing and pearl diving settlement into a bustling commercial hub. Whizzing around town with Alison My most recent find in Dubai The new Jumeirah Corniche.

For boutique shopping at its best Market And Platters near Dubai Marina. They have incredibly fresh seafood, vegetables, fruits and dairy. Their proximity to the beach means if you’re planning a picnic by the sea, it’s a great place to stop by and pick up some luxurious food.

The last art gallery I visited Showcase at Alserkal Avenue. They have a great exhibition of work from Al Mawaheb’s students.

For quiet time I would head out to the sea with great friends who value the sound of silence.

start your day by with a long walk by the beach followed by a refreshing swim. My nearest beach is Al Manara but wherever you are in Dubai you’re never far from the sea. if i had only 24 hours to explore dubai i would not sleep. My first stop would have to be the Dubai Creek alongside which you’ll find the Arabian-souks and the historic districts of Shindagah and Al Fahidi. Then take the ferry to Dubai Marina and enjoy the spectacular views of the city from the sea. From Dubai Marina hop on the Dubai Metro (well worth going Gold Class for the guaranteed seat and unobstructed view through the front window) to The Dubai Mall to see the Aquarium and take a trip up the iconic Burj Khalifa. Have lunch at one of the many great restaurants on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard in Downtown Dubai and end the day with a trip into the desert at sunset before heading back into town for a curry at Ravi Restaurant in Satwa. i would stay at XVA Art Hotel. I love the location – right in the centre of Al Fahidi Historic District. It has just a few beautiful Zen-like rooms above an art gallery and very good café. It is a total antidote to staying at a chain hotel. an unforgettable place for me would have to be on a dune in the Dubai desert on a full-moon night. The moon comes up in the east exactly as the sun goes down in the west. It’s a great time to see the world in perfect balance. show off by docking my boat perfectly. Dubai Offshore Sailing Club is my haven and I have been a member for 36 years. My three children learnt to sail there along with countless other youngsters. Whether I am racing or just cruising, it is where you’ll find me at the weekend. if it’s your first time at an art gallery, do make sure to research before you go. BEACH CANTEEN

Back by popular demand, Kite Beach is the place to meet and eat during the Festival. With the sand between your toes, savour the delights dished up by Dubai’s local restauranteurs, serving from their ‘pop-up’ kitchens. With a special ‘pop-up’ specifically for the celebrity chefs, this is a great opportunity to celebrate Dubai’s growing list of home-grown cafés and concepts. Entertainment will be laid on in the form of beach games, sunset yoga and local bands.

STREET NIGHTS

The vibrant industrial district of Al Quoz, home to the city’s cutting-edge art galleries, is the perfect setting to showcase Dubai’s street food and melting pot of cultures. Sample fayre from 20 of the city’s funkiest food outlets on hand to serve up their multicultural dishes on 19-20 February in Street 4B, Al Quoz. If you want to experience the city’s culture through taste, then don’t miss this.

TASTE OF PERU

For something completely different head to the Madinat Jumeirah Amphitheatre, 12-15 February, and visit food huts dishing up classic Peruvian cuisine. Think ceviche and tiradito, causa, quinotto and empanadas along with native juices and the renowned national grape cocktail, all washed down with live Peruvian music.

MYSTERY DINING TOURS

From 9-23 February, hop on board the Food Festival Bus for a culinary journey across Dubai. There are a number of routes from which to choose. Explore the lesser-known kitchens of the city’s street cafés where you’ll sample anything from rich aromatic curries to Arabian sweet delights. Alternatively, the five-star choice will see you dining on the signature dishes of some of Dubai’s top kitchen craftsmen. Tours take place on weekdays throughout the festival.

DUBAI FOOD CARNIVAL

Following its successful debut last year, the Dubai Food Carnival promises a weekend crammed with family fun. Running from 12-14 February, this is the UAE’s largest public food event with more than 20,000 visitors queuing up to see celebrity chefs reveal their cooking secrets and tips in a series of master classes and demonstrations. The massive celebration blends all the city’s gourmet ingredients from a la carte to fast food. Get in touch with your inner chef with competitions such as the BBQ challenges and bake-offs. And when you’re not eating or cooking, enjoy the live bands, street artists and kids’ corners. All this takes place at the Dubai International Marine Club. 18

SILVENA SERVES DUBAI

bulgarian born, british celebrity chef – and dubai resident – silvena rowe is on a mission to promote the authentic emirati recipes and local produce at her restaurant omnia gourmet are you excited about the dubai food festival (dff)? I’m hugely excited about DFF, especially after such a great start this year. It is very much a homegrown festival for Dubai, by Dubai. how do you describe your cooking style? what defines your dishes and menus? My food and concepts are very much home grown. I believe that home grown restaurants are the way forward in Dubai. My food is locally-sourced, organic whenever possible, 98 per cent gluten free, desserts are raw and sugar and dairy free – but still as delicious and satisfying as real food should be. My mantra is “raw-to-glow”. At Omnia Gourmet we believe in “You are what you eat”, so we strive to keep you beautiful on the inside too. what is your signature dish? At Omnia Gourmet it’s Silvena’s

Velvet Cheesecake, a firm Dubai favourite. how has your concept been embraced in dubai? Dubaiians love Omnia Gourmet. We have been blessed with many and very positive comments and customers, who are thrilled to be offered delicious but healthy dining options. why did you choose to open omnia gourmet in jumeirah’s fishing village? I love the location - it’s beautiful, peaceful and very Dubai. The restaurant is on the water itself plus it sits next to the old fish market. It also has a slight rustic element in the architecture. tell us more about the upcoming omnia by silvena. Omnia by Silvena will be an expression of the spirit of

how do the customers in dubai differ from elsewhere in the world? Dubai is a small place but packed with a variety of restaurants, which means customers are spoilt for choice and are becoming more demanding. I love that Omnia Gourmet has attracted Emiratis as well as many expat guests. you’re renowned for your use of ‘super foods’ and organic produce. how easy is it to source that in dubai? It is a challenge. Seasons here are different so consistency is also a challenge. Summers are tough due to such hot weather, but winter season is full of delicious produce. I just work closely with few local producers and make sure that I have good trusting relationships. you’ve lived in dubai for one year now, what do you think of it? I love Dubai and I love how there are no limits to creativity and opportunity here. I find Dubai very suitable for my character very progressive and fast. I am developing a long-lasting love affair with Dubai and enjoying every moment very much. apart from your own restaurant, where else do you like to eat in the city? For Sushi it has to be Bentoya on Sheikh Zayed Road. For Indian food it is Calicut Paragon in Karama and Wox at Grand Hyatt Dubai for the best noodles in town.

Note: Omnia by Silvena is located in Downtown Dubai and is due to open by Christmas 2014.

20TH Anniversary Shopping Festival

GO SHOP…

With fantastic deals and bargains, drool-worthy prizes and loads of fun activities, there’s no reason not to celebrate 20 spectacular years of the Dubai Shopping Festival

the 20 th anniversary of the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF), 1 January to 1 February 2015, promises to be a hugely rewarding shopping experience. This is the time when not only are prices slashed in thousands of shops across the city, but whopping prizes are up for grabs, and by whopping we mean the likes of Lamborghini, Bentley and Infiniti cars, apartments, gold and cash. As the name says, this is not just a sale, it’s shopping festival, and one like no other. Since its launch in 1996, DSF has offered more than Dhs1.7 billion in prizes. The sheer number of winners and the prizes they have won are truly mind-boggling. 22

To date, prizes have included Dhs80.5 million in cash, 734 kilos of gold and 33 Rolls Royce cars in addition to cars from Nissan, Lexus and Infiniti. During one DSF a lucky shopper won 100 kilos of gold while another shopper won 10 Nissan cars. At the 19th edition of the DSF in 2014, shoppers were treated to fabulous bargains and discounts that spanned 70 malls and more than 6,000 shops. As a global attraction, DSF attracts on average 4.5 million visitors a year with a total spend of Dhs15 billion. From 1996 to 2014, 56 million visitors came to Dubai for DSF, spending Dhs145 billion – whether on shopping, hospitality or on entertainment. d u b a i

20th Anniversary: A Journey of Celebrations The 20th edition of DSF is a landmark for the emirate. What began as an event to boost local business has now grown into the longest-running festival of its kind in the world. To mark this impressive achievement, this edition of the fest is themed as “A Journey of Celebrations”. Through an exciting line-up of events, experiences and entertainment, the festival will reflect the epic journey undertaken by DSF during the past two decades. The theme is also a reflection of the inspiring journey that visitors enjoy when they visit DSF and enjoy its multitude of rewarding experiences.

One World. One Family. One Festival But DSF is not just about discounts and bargains. The month-long festivities are also a great time for families and friends to enjoy some exciting activities and entertainment. Parks become outdoor theatres attracting audiences in the thousands, thronging to watch family shows featuring beloved TV characters, performances by gravity-defying gymnasts, ballet troupes and Bollywood bands. Al Seef Street, Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, Global Village and Al Shindagha Heritage Area are the places to head to for fun-filled frolics featuring more than a 1,000 street performers and artists including musicians, dancers, acrobats, stilt walkers and gymnasts. Add to this delectable cuisine from around the world and you have a cultural experience of a lifetime. And don’t forget the spectacular fireworks that light up the sky every night.

The World’s Best Shopping Experience The heart of the festival remains its ability to provide shopping experiences that are unique and diverse; that range from city and street markets to traditional souks and world-class shopping malls. Given that Dubai is ranked second after London as a city that has the largest collection of international retail brands in one place, as well as featuring the participation of more than 70 malls and 6,000 retail outlets many offering discounts of up to 75 per cent on everything from gold, fragrances, haute couture fashion, cars, electronics to handicrafts and textiles, shopping here is definitely among the world’s best.

d u b a i

WIN BIG AT THE 20TH DSF

In celebration of the anniversary milestone, the Gold and Jewellery Mega Raffle offers shoppers the chance to win up to Dhs15 million in prizes including 100 kg of gold and 40 carats of diamonds. The city is also aiming to set a new Guinness World Record during DSF by creating the “Dubai Celebration Chain”, a five km long handmade gold chain. This is also your chance to buy a piece of history: parts of the chain certified by the Guinness World Record will go on sale during the festival.

LIKE A PRO Kelly Lundberg has styled for The Brit Awards, The Grammys and The Dubai Film Festival. The Dubai-based personal shopper is also brand ambassador for celebrities’ favourite Neom Luxury Organics and accessory designer Lulu Guinness. And, if that’s not enough Kelly is the brain behind StyleMeDivine.com, a bespoke styling agency, founded on the premise that the region’s women (and men) like to have help with choosing clothes, shoes and accessories. So, if there is anyone who knows how to shop in Dubai it is Kelly. Here she reveals some of her favourites outlets. “The Dubai Mall is the world’s biggest shopping mall and also my top shopping destination. While it has some obvious designer stops it is also home to some of Dubai’s best-kept secrets and, having made shopping into a profession, I’ve made it my business to know every one of them. “To get the best from your shopping experience, my first tip is to plan ahead. Hit the malls early morning when you’ll find neatly arranged merchandise, plenty of stock and fresh-faced staff eager to assist. “Negotiating your way around The Dubai Mall can be challenging. Fashion Avenue is home to many top designer names but just a three-minute walk from there is the renowned Level Shoe District. It is a must visit for shoe fiends with exclusive shoes in every style, size and colour possible. End the shoe hunt with a royal sole treatment at Margaret Dabbs – the renowned celebrity foot expert and her team of experienced therapists provides outstanding care for feet. This is by far my favourite shopping spot. “Next on my list is Eye Boutique - a hidden gem, not just for ladies but for men too. Their extensive limited edition and designer eyewear and sunglass collection cannot be found anywhere else and are my “lust haves”. After all one pair is never enough. “Those looking for something different or keen to support local talent should take a trip off the beaten track. There are a number of independent boutiques and unique shopping districts along the Jumeirah Beach and Al Wasl Roads. The newly opened Galleria Mall is well worth a peek too. “Dubai’s newest shopping experience, The Beach at Jumeirah Walk, will tick the box for those looking to combine the beach with shopping. Sauce on the Sea is renowned for quirky accessories and cool kaftans, while familiars such as Victoria’s Secret and Sephora are destined to tempt you into an extra splurge. “Any shopping experience, however, is never quite complete without a stylish recharge. Check out Raffles for its Fashion Afternoon Tea, couture cupcakes and scrumptious sandwiches adding the ultimate finishing touch to a perfect day.”

BURJ AL ARAB TURNS 15

We celebrate 15 golden years of Dubai’s iconic Burj Al Arab, often billed as ‘the world’s most luxurious hotel’ it’s the stuff of dreams, an elegant obelisk reminiscent of the sails of a dhow rising from the shimmering waters of the Arabian Gulf. A fleet of white Rolls Royces and Bentleys glide over the causeway ferrying guests to its own man-made island, while private helicopters deliver VVIPs onto the helipad. Welcome to the Burj Al Arab, the world’s most luxurious hotel. Burj Al Arab, which celebrated its 15th anniversary on 1 December 2014, is often dubbed the ‘world’s only seven-star hotel’. Officially there is no such rating but if it did exist, The Burj, as it is affectionately known among Dubai residents, would be the defining standard. For many, stepping inside it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Whether it’s the opulent gold-leaf applied interiors, the fleet of chauffeur-driven Rolls Royces, its monumental atrium, its aquariums that are larger than most people’s apartments, personal butlers for each guest, in-suite check-in, gold-plated iPads, golddust laced cappuccinos and cupcakes, the Burj Al Arab epitomises luxury.

Unsurprisingly, the restaurants are exceptional. Al Mahara (The Oyster Shell) boasts Excellence Awards by TripAdvisor and Wine Spectator for 2014. OSCAR VAN DER VEEN, CONCIERGE MANAGER TALKS ABOUT LIFE AT BURJ AL ARAB.

what is the best thing about being the concierge at the burj al arab? Being part of a greater team that works at such an iconic hotel. My team includes porters, bell captains, doormen and valet parkers. Plus, as a manager, I not only look after some of the most unusual requests one can think of, I also chase lost luggage in a RTA taxi, look for organic baby food or prescription medication for some of our valued guests. the most memorable moment so far? I have had the pleasure to meet and look after some impressive 28

guests, not just royalty or celebrities, but also dignitaries and acclaimed industry leaders. where is your favourite spot in the hotel? The redcarpeted helipad. Every time I am up there I am amazed at the architectural splendour of our building and how the landscape and horizon of Dubai keeps developing so rapidly and dramatically. tell us some unique experiences you can create for guests. Some include a Rolls Royce or helicopter arrival or departure, or a luxurious yacht trip at

sunset with Burj Al Arab in the background. can you get last-moment reservations at the busiest restaurants in town? Being a concierge is all about contacts and who you know. You need to know who to call or, alternatively, you can try to make some arrangements via the Les Clef ’s d’Or’s international concierge network. I make it a professional mission to personally meet restaurant managers, tour suppliers, clubs and lounges so that when I have a last minute VIP request, it is easier to make the call. what is the most common request? Restaurant reservations. d u b a i

Online check-ins, desert safaris and city tours. what has been the most challenging request? Personal shopping can be very challenging. The requests may be seemingly simple, such as a toy or an iPhone, but these can sometimes take days to resolve. We are often calling global headquarters looking for local distributors. You need to take into consideration time zones and operating days that often make the search last longer. any requests that you are not able to fulfill? Many guests request access to the Burj Al Arab helipad. Unfortunately, it is not an observation deck. For safety reasons it is exclusively used for helicopter arrivals and landings.

SETTING THE SCENE For meetings that matter, choose venues that really make an impression

while meetings may last a few hours at most, they have a far-reaching impact on a company’s business. That’s why it’s essential that they leave a lasting and positive impression. The first step to sealing the deal is to pick a site that blows your delegates’ mind. Here’s a selection of some of Dubai’s most outstanding venues. d u b a i

47

At.mosphere at Burj Khalifa Located on the 122nd floor of the iconic Burj Khalifa – the world’s tallest building – meetings at At.mosphere will literally take your company to greater heights – 442 metres to be exact. It also helps that the restaurant-cum-lounge offers one of the best business lunches in town. Think creative, delicious dishes such as wagyu beef with slow-cooked egg and sour dough crostini, or guilt head sea bream. www.atmosphereburjkhalifa.com

Hatta Fort Hotel Cool mountain air helps you make clear-headed decisions. That’s why the Hatta Fort Hotel, set among the majestic Hajar Mountains, is ideal for meetings and conferences. Indoor facilities offer spectacular views of the mountains while outdoor venues include the Rock Garden Pool Patio and a Heritage Tent. The hotel is happy to offer bespoke dining options including canapés, cocktails, buffets and set menus. Take your conference a step further and dress the entire hotel in your brand’s colours, logo and theme. Just an hour away from Dubai, Hatta Fort Hotel also doubles up as the perfect spot for corporate getaways and has all the apparatus for fun team building. www.jaresortshotels.com

MadinatJumeirah Madinat Jumeirah’s USP lies in its novelty factor. Built in the form of a colossal Arabian citadel, a visit to the Madinat is akin to stepping back in time. The sandstone-coloured resort features elements of traditional Arabian architecture such as wind towers, and, with a waterway meandering through the resort, guests can ride an abra (a traditional wooden boat) to get around the entire complex. These, plus the versatility and capacity of the venues within Madinat Jumeirah, mean that it is a perennial host of many of Dubai’s key events such as Art Dubai and the Dubai International Film Festival. Delegates will also appreciate the Madinat Souk, a thriving shopping, dining and social spot. www.jumeirah.com

Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa The serene Arabian Desert forms a stunning backdrop for corporate events. Al Maha Desert Resort and Spa will impress clients not only with its luxurious facilities but its location. With the winter just setting in, Al Maha’s outdoor Campsite venue, complete with traditional seating, live entertainment and sumptuous meals served under the stars, is perfect for memorable group dinners. A word of caution for event organisers making a booking at The Palace: the stunning views of The Dubai Fountain and Burj Khalifa may leave your delegates highly distracted. This hotel is palatial, not only in size but also in its offering. There is a variety of meeting rooms each with a private pre-function area – a highly useful feature if you’re planning break-out activities. TRIP In August 2014 the #MyDubai initiative took on another dimension with the creation of #MyDubai Trip #mydubai trip is an exclusive series of videos that documented the journey of some of the most influential Instagrammers from around the world as they experienced Dubai. The twist? Their itineraries were thoughtfully curated and crowd-sourced from several of Dubai’s renowned social media personalities. Headed up by Qabeela New Media, the 12-episode travel series of videos was curated by well-known Emirati social travel experts, Peeta Planet, an award-winning travel series broadcast to 50 million TV 54

viewers across the Middle East featuring brothers Mohamed and Peyman al Awadhi, from the UAE who visit countries across the world. Their journeys are decided by recommendations made on social media. The #MyDubai Trip is the first time the model of social travel has been applied to their home city. Around 30 itineraries were curated by residents of Dubai, all of whom are prominent across social media, within their respective industries of fashion, food, sports, culture and entrepreneurship. The itineraries were posted on Peeta Planet’s d u b a i

Facebook page with the general public asked to vote for their favourite. The 12 most voted for itineraries were then each filmed as one episode of Peeta Planet’s ‘#MyDubai Trip’ series. Joining Mohamed and Peyman on the ‘#MyDubai Trip’ film series were 12 globally prominent Instagram users, chosen by another public vote. “The #MyDubai Trip’ series draws upon local knowledge and aims to transform residents of Dubai into advocates of tourism for their city,” says Mohamed. “It’s been an amazing experience working on this project in our own city. What became quickly apparent was the enthusiasm from local Dubai residents about their home. And then seeing that enthusiasm filter through to our visiting winning international Instagrammers was really rewarding.” Here are just a few of the 12 winning itineraries:
