A few words on cannabis culture:
“We’ve seen a lot of stoners and appreciate them all; except that one guy.” If there’s one take-away from our sit down with Slightly Stoopid, it’s the concept of community that cannabis irrevocably brings to the world. To meet such demand, Sky High Garden’s has partnered with Kush Tourism to offer the public a peek inside the operation of their 21,000 sq./ ft., Tier 3, indoor recreational cannabis garden.

This is a great move forward toward the legitimacy of the cannabis industry and I hope that this trend continues. As the market matures as do people’s palettes, the cannabis industry might evolve similar to the way the microbrewery industry did here in this state. “If we are going to make it a legitimate industry here in Washington, opening up to the public has got to be done,” said Humphrey. “We can’t operate in the shadows.”

Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square set the stage for a candid conversation on the emerging cannabis industry in Washington State January 9th, with none other than counterculture icon and cannabis advocate, Tommy Chong. At the press conference, Chong spoke to the tremendous opportunity facing the Washington State cannabis movement, stating that, “Washington is growing up and is evolving into this beautiful country that is going to help and be at the forefront.” He also highlighted the business end of the spectrum, speaking to moving past the black market and how to “monetize the industry beyond the guy that knows the guy…” When asked what set Washington State and the Seattle area apart from other cannabis markets, Chong was quick to cite the longtime channel of Canadian
pot making its way through Washington on its way to California: “Washington has an interesting history. It is so close to BC Bud. Washington, apparently—according to my growers—is one of the greatest places in America to grow weed. The conditions are perfect.” While Chong has been a quintessential member of the cannabis movement for decades, working across artistic mediums and generations, his recent battles with prostate cancer have only furthered his promotion of what he calls “the magical herb”: “The health aspect of the plant itself is paramount. When I heard that they were thinking of getting rid of the medical side in favor of the recreational, I thought, Who are these dumbfucks? How fucking stupid is that approach?”

But Chong isn’t one to suggest cannabis be used only by those suffering from illness. In a clever reminder that forgetting can be a health benefit, Chong noted what he views as the positive side effects of cannabis on healthy individuals:
“The right people have to get stoned.”
“And then it helps the healthy people. One of the knocks against marijuana is that it makes you forget things. Well, that’s exactly what we’re supposed to do. We’re not supposed to hang onto stupid memories that make you feel bad. You’re supposed to forget that shit. Move on. That’s a health benefit.”
“The great thing about our culture is that we share. And we don’t care who we’re sharing it with. I’ve gotten stoned with some of the greatest people on this planet. Like George Harrison of The Beatles. He’s the only Beatle I actually smoked a joint with. I smoked in front of Ringo, I smoked in front of John Lennon, but George was the only one that took that joint out of my hand.”
Chong further elaborated on the cognitive benefits of cannabis, stating, “Pot is medicine for the brain. People ask me how will pot will save the world—well, pot will save the world when smart people get high. And smart people are gonna figure out shit.” He later reiterated his point, saying,
