ISSUE 26 FEBRUARY 2018

FROM THE EDITOR

Editor-in-Chief Enas Hashani Managing Director Maria Mahdaly Executive Editor Bassma Al Toaimi

UNLEASH YOUR INNER CREATIVE You can tell a lot about a group by the art it creates. And by art, we mean all artistic expression from film to oil paintings, music to poetry; the labor of all artistic and creative pursuits. You see, the French artist Matisse once said: “creativity takes courage, and no one understands the type of courage Matisse spoke of quite like us. In a time where the arts were not considered an integral aspect of our lives, many Sharqawis have taken it upon themselves to persevere and persist, despite the naysayers and limited supporting resources. Today, the nation not only has embraced the arts but celebrates it. In this issue, we sat down with Majed Al Babtain, General Manager of the Ministry of Culture and Information in Dammam, who walked us through Media, its beginnings, and how it is today. We also got the chance to sit with the newly appointed director of the Society of Arts and Culture in Dammam, Yousif Al Harbi, whose passion for the arts will be the only dose of inspiration you need this month.

Lama Al Aswad A connoisseur of aesthetics. By Dalia Darweesh

Excitement, passion, and enthusiasm; these are but a few words that come to mind when you’re in the company of Lama Al Aswad. Having a background in Interior Design and Architecture, and an appreciation for photography and art, Lama founded Grey Art Events in 2016, a platform for artists in Sharqiya. After working in Bahrain for some time, Lama came back to Khobar and noticed that many of the things she was used to, have changed. She decided to start something of her own. Lama began organizing events with Behance, an international online platform that showcases works of artists. She held the first Behance Portfolio Review event in Saudi, and has organized 10 such events ever since. “I loved the feeling, it was fun,” she tells us. However, she wanted to add her own touch of individuality to the events she curates and organizes, especially after noticing that many of the artists weren’t receiving the appreciation they deserved. It is then that an idea started forming in the back of her head and this was its premise: a place that allows artists with different interests to share their love for art, to showcase it, and allow other artists and art lovers to appreciate it all. Grey Art began with a Black and White concept, which 10 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2018

carries a beautiful message behind it. Art is never defined from one perspective, or one point view. It can be interpreted in many ways: “In art, there is no black or white. There is no ugly or beautiful.” Grey Art Events has been going since 2016, and has witnessed a huge success. “We believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that there is no wrong or right, and that each person envisions the world in their own personal way.” What Lama loves the

most about what she does is being able to network. Communicating and meeting new people from the local community, while exchanging ideas and thoughts makes her feel great. She explains that organizing her art events has also helped her become a better communicator. Lama won’t just stop at Grey Art. Her future goals entail organizing bigger events, especially with the activities that are happening with the General Entertainment Authority and Vision 2030. Sharing her thoughts with us about the art scene in Sharqiya, Lama believes that additional work is still required to elevate our local art scene. “But I still get pleasantly shocked when I see that we have so many talents here,” she adds. One advice that Lama wishes she could give to all artists is to not be afraid of showcasing their work. “Just go out there.” Web: greyart.net Email: info@greayart.net greyartevents

MEDIA THEN AND NOW Majed Al Babtain, and his thoughts on Saudi media. By Dalia Darweesh

STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA ALDAWOOD

Preserving the Saudi identity and spreading the values of our society has been the role of the Ministry of Culture and Information throughout the years.

12 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2018

Saudi media has been contributing in raising awareness on the country, both locally and internationally, and has also been confronting false interpretations and misconceptions that exist. The beginnings of Saudi media started with a series of sound and organized steps, with insight on the important role media plays within a nation. Umm Al-Qura newspaper was the first media outlet, established in 1924 under the reign of King Abdulaziz. In 1949, the Saudi Arabian radio station was established

by royal decree. In order to improve Saudi media, the Directorate General of Press and Publishing was established and the radio was linked to it in 1955. This is what is known today as the Ministry of Culture and Information, officially renamed in 2003. We had a sit-down with the general manager of the Eastern Province branch of the Ministry of Culture and Information, Majed Al Babtain, and he shared his thoughts on the progression of Saudi media throughout the 32 years he has worked in the industry.

With Prince Saud bin Nayef, Governor of the Eastern Province.

During a visit to London Underground event in Khobar.

Born and raised in Khobar, after pursuing my Bachelors from King Saud University in Riyadh in Arts, I went on to obtain my Master’s degree in Media from the state of Indiana in the United States. There were many job opportunities back then, so it was easier for one to pick and choose, unlike how it is now. Even though I had many options, I chose to work in Media. It’s a vast sea. I consider Media to be a subsection of human sciences. It’s fun, entertaining, and enlightening, especially when you have the interest and passion for it.

Media is also dealing, interacting, and communicating with people. That’s why I have always loved it. There’s always something to enjoy. The field 14 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2018

that really interests me is strategic and media planning, which also falls within the Public Relations field.

How would you compare Media from then till now?

It’s completely different. If you asked me back then that this change will happen, I would never have imagined that we will reach to where we are today. It was difficult for men

and women back then to be associated with the Media field. Some women would write under fake names in order for their articles to be published on newspapers. Once upon a time, Media platforms were opposed and fought against from the majority. Although the community may still be facing some struggles, I believe that we are witnessing a positive change now.

COURTESY PHOTO

Tell us a bit about yourself, and how did you fall in love with Media?

In your opinion, what are the reasons for these changes?

The society has changed. It is becoming more accepting of the whole concept, in comparison to 30 years ago. Media platforms and delivering methods are almost countless nowadays, from virtual, to spoken or readable. This is the fruit of the efforts of the community itself, the society wants change, the society is well-educated. People seek education, and there may be some economic problems, but it’s very essential to know that we have been invested in to get that education that lead us to where we are today.

What do you think of the cinema ban lift?

I believe that it is definitely a great step in the right direction. Cinema in Saudi is just another Media communication method. On that note, the Saudi film industry will boom soon. I have met actors and producers, and also watched different films produced by Saudis; they have very powerful and strong thoughts. This is a promising generation. Over the past few years, the Saudi media has invested heavily in developing their professional capabilities, even surpassing some of the Arab media platforms. This is in addition to the cultural subjects in the Media that create complementarity and harmony towards achieving the greatest outcomes. AWJ EVENTS ENTERTAINMENT WEAVERS A sit-down with AWJ Events, crafters of new experiences. By Jou Pabalate

Their interactive theater caught our attention so we just had to find out who they were. The team behind AWJ are young entrepreneurs out to change the game side by side big players in the entertainment industry. And you know what we think? They’ll be winning. Arwa

Can you tell us about yourselves?

STAFF PHOTO/NAWAF AL FARRAJ

We are four co-founders Abdulrahman, Abdulaziz, Jawaher and Arwa. It all started when we were in Alfaisal University in Riyadh. Each one of us joined a student committee where we all held lead roles and responsibilities. We were planning and executing various events on and off the campus throughout our years studying in the university. This experience is what brought the four of us together. We all held a great passion to implement our ideas to reality and we wanted to continue in the event planning field.

What inspired you to create AWJ Events?

The impact of the events we held on the community, we wanted to continue delivering a new and worthwhile experience to the audience.

Our ambition is to help reshape the concept of entertainment in the Kingdom. We hope to add more value to the world of event planning by creating interactive experiences that understand the culture and interests of our audience. As for the name “Awj”; it is an Arabic word that means “the peak”, or “the highest point”. We wanted the company to hold a name from our first language this is still relatable with our goals and vision.

How do you see the entertainment industry developing in the Kingdom? What are your challenges?

The entertainment industry has been increasing exponentially. Many entities are supporting and investing in the sector to bring more activities and means of entertainment from abroad. Other than that, there are numerous event planning companies and festivals being DESTINATIONKSA.COM 17

held. In very short months we are seeing so many events happening at the same time. And we do expect it to continue this way for the upcoming months. The challenge arising with having many events is that a lot of people have lost interest because of the repetitive concepts happening. Today competitors are not only other events, but any other form of entertainment one has at home. The current support we need may include a facilitator in the form of governmental entities. When implementing new ideas that have never happened in the Kingdom before, there are no clear processes for such types of events, so we had to take a rather difficult route and put more effort to receive legal licenses and governmental approvals. We also hope that more spaces for holding events will be made available. With the current increase in events, there are not enough spaces to support having them.

What expectations did you have in the beginning?

We were expecting the governmental process of the events approval is clear; and that there is support from some governmental entities, companies, and groups for our concept. Last, we thought that the people would be very excited for trying a new journey through our events.

18 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2018

The reality was, the licensing process wasn’t that clear and we had some issues. But we still got the got the support from some government entities, companies, and groups and they where excited about our concept. Lastly, the feedback of the people was amazing. They were excited, but we faced some problems in explaining this concept to people, and now we are planning to run an educational campaign to avoid this kind of issues.

What are some of the things you didn't quite anticipate as entrepreneurs?

First, we tried to take a new challenge and try a different route from others. But being unique costs a lot so we spent more time in explaining and educating people about what an “Interactive Theater is. Second, we avoided using any social media influencers to promote us and our services. We used other strategies to reach out the people such as word of mouth. Apparently our strategy works in a long-term campaigns and not the short ones. Also, we focused to include the youth as much as possible in all aspects of the events, so a lot of our stakeholders are from the youth. Web: awjevent.com

We hope to add more value to the world of event planning by creating interactive experiences that understand the culture and interests of our audience.

A PATRON OF

THE ARTS A local society, its director, and talents of thousands.

20 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2018

Imagine a one-story building along the edges in the sprawling city of Dammam. It’s not a new building, roughly 12 years of age. The walls of its courtyard are covered with prints depicting scenes from old plays and performances that date back to the 70’s. There’s an overcast, with a slight breeze. Sitting on one of the Khaleeji-style benches lining one of the walls is Yousif Al Harbi, the Society of Arts and Culture’s director. This is where we were, and this is what I know to be true: there are people who have made it their business to make the world a more beautiful place, and I was sitting in the presence of someone just like that. The newly appointed director to the Dammam branch is no stranger to the art scene. Having served the society first as Head of Media and Publishing for 7 years, then Head of Public Relations for 5 years, the Arts and Culture Society had become a second home for Al Harbi. But that’s not where his journey with the arts began. The director is a student of the arts, turned teacher. When he’s not overseeing the activities of the society or writing a column for Al Watan newspaper, Al Harbi would be preparing for his day job: an elementary school art teacher. A true believer in the transformative powers of art, Al Harbi dedicates his time to instilling, not skills, but an understanding to what art is, in his young students. “All children are born artists,”

Picasso tells us, and this is what Al Harbi believes, too. “There is nothing more gratifying that watching the look on a child’s face when they hold up an artwork of theirs; there is pride, there, behind the common shyness. A look that says, ‘this is what I did’ and that ownership, is everything.”

Aside from cultivating creativity and keeping the imagination alive, Al Harbi also believes that art teaches children patience, decisionmaking, and with enough encouragement, it teaches children dedication. “Art is also a window into a child’s wellbeing. Parents can deduce a lot from their children’s artwork if they just pay enough attention to it,” he tells us. Yousif Al Harbi hopes to see more art competitions between schools and exhibitions. “I’ve already started last year but I strive to witness the realization of a nationwide competition leading to one of the biggest art showcase dedicated towards the works of kids and young adults, between the ages of 6 to 17.” “That is what I dream to see,” he added. Aside for art, photography included, of course, Al Harbi believes in the power of reading. “We need more book clubs!” The presence of book clubs in schools as crucial towards the development of a society that reads. From a more comprehensive integration of arts in the educational system to the local art scene in Sharqiya, our DESTINATIONKSA.COM 21

conversation brought us back to the very location we were at that day: The Society of Arts and Culture in Dammam. Established in 1978, the Society in Dammam has hosted hundreds of events, both cultural and artistic, including workshops, courses, and festivals. Divided to committees or “houses”, as they’re referred to, they focus on the following disciplines: Fine Arts, Theater, Prose and Poetry, Cinema, Music, and Heritage. Each of these houses are spearheaded by a member of the Society, overseeing their respective programs. The members, along with their director, Al Harbi, volunteer their time and effort with nothing to gain except for the gratification that stems from seeing the community celebrating the arts, in all its form. Simply, a labor of love. The Society, with its old but charming building, stands today as a reminder for a facet of our society that might have been overlooked for quite some time:A society that loves art, that loves poetry, that loves music and plays; a society that wants to create, to spread joy, to give back. A society that loves life, and appreciates it. And what better way to express that love than through the arts? Society of Arts and Culture: Location: Al Athir, Dammam Web: sasca.org.sa sasca_dmm

RADIO STAR Let us introduce you to the vivacious Ajwa Al Joudi. By Dalia Darweesh

Behind the voice that’s been transmitted through to our radios is a woman, all strong will and fierce determination. Meet Ajwa Al Joudi, Radio Announcer and Community Engagement Liaison at Aramco’s radio station, 91.4 fm. Having taken the path less travelled, she managed to fight against the odds, and prove to herself, her family, and community, that nothing is out of reach.

DESTINATIONKSA.COM 25

Back in 2010, Ajwa obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah. After working for a few months in the Kingdom for newspapers and magazines, she noticed that she was leaning towards something other than print: broadcast journalism. From there, she followed

26 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2018

her passion and went on an educational journey to Los Angeles for a Master’s degree. “I was so mesmerized when I got there. Not from the cultural differences, but from the different methods used for teaching there.” Education was noticeably different to her in the United States, and not just academically but the whole

experience. That is when Ajwa decided to make the most out of her time there. “I’ve always had an admiration for Saudi women who are successful and have done or held unconventional and unique jobs.” For her senior project, she produced a documentary about successful Saudi women

in California. Ajwa sees herself producing and creating documentaries in the future, that is her true passion.

not in this case. It was a very competitive market, especially for journalism amongst young women.

It is a known fact that Los Angeles is the spot for fame and success. After all, they say that America is “the land of opportunities”, right? Unfortunately,

After graduating and working as a freelancer for a few months, it was time for Ajwa to say goodbye to this valuable stint. “I realized by then that this was not the platform for me. My shot in broadcast journalism was definitely in Saudi Arabia, where this type of journalism is beginning to bloom.” Ajwa has always been active in her field, and she has the most fitting and lively personality for that. Her various involvements included attending Saudi Film Days in Los Angeles, as a reporter. After coming back to Saudi, she interned at Al Arabiya TV in Riyadh, and another window opened after that. She was contacted by the Saudi Film Festival that was held in Dammam in 2017 to be an MC (Master of Ceremonies), an opportunity that unknowingly turned into landing a job at Aramco, after being discovered at the event. Now, it’s inevitable that doing something outside of society’s norms is frowned upon by some. “When I was in middle school, I was on a TV show on MBC3 and hadn’t covered my hair.” Ajwa recalls the non-acceptance from people around her, so she decided to stop her activities in journalism after that. How many of us have felt that spark inside of us, that need

we feel to follow our dreams, but we simply didn’t because we’re unsure, or too afraid of what people may think? Even though everyone around Ajwa thought it was an adolescent phase, and that she’ll get past it, the appetite inside of her never died. Of course, she still gets her good share of objections from “how could you do this?” to “this is not in our culture”, but it never stops her. So, what’s more fun than being a radio host at one of our favorite Sharqawi radio stations? Ajwa says meeting, connecting, and building relationships with people from different fields and interests is the best part about her job. “It’s never one boring thing that you keep on doing.” Even though she makes it look natural, being a broadcast journalist is not as easy as it sounds. She likes discovering new, local stories before any other journalist. That’s why she works twice as hard. Being successful doesn’t necessarily mean sticking to a certain routine. “I don’t have a routine, especially with a very busy schedule. Every day is a different adventure”. We left off our conversation with these powerful words from our radio star:“I learned the hard way, so before you have the knowledge, before you have the talent, before you have anything, grow thick skin. When you do something that you love, be professional at it, or just leave it.”

ART

A Conversation With

ALANOOD AL SULBI … ON ART AND DOING WHAT YOU LOVE. Tell us a bit about yourself.

I have a bachelor's degree in Marketing from Dammam University, but I have always enjoyed the arts. I’ve worked here and there, but I recently resigned, and this gave me more time to focus on my art. It’s what I truly enjoy. I consider my art to be different, emotional as well.

When did you first discover that painting is what you wanted to do?

It was a hobby of mine ever since I was young, so it came out naturally. I was in a special Arts College at Shelton High School back in the UK, where we worked on Art-related projects, and that’s when I first started showing people my work.

I absolutely have to listen to music, perhaps the type of music depends on my mood that day. Coffee, of course is a must to me. I start getting creative, and mostly enjoy painting on late nights, sometimes early mornings.

What’s your favorite piece that you have created? A four-piece “mix and match” portrait painting that I have 28 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2018

What kind of creative routines do you have?

created, it’s like a puzzle. I can match it however I like. Personally, I get bored easily and that’s why I often like to switch up my environment, so I truly enjoyed creating this piece.

What inspires you?

It depends. Since I have free time now, I decided to start planting, and I chose to plant a sunflower. The anticipation and the excitement that comes along with waiting for it to grow was inspiring to me. I noticed that the sunflower indirectly affected me, since I realized that most of the paintings that I did during that period of time were

in yellow, the color of a sunflower. Everything can inspire me, in a way.

What’s the best advice you have ever received?

Sometimes you can get an advice, without someone saying it directly to you. But something that I have always heard, and truly believe in is: be different and do something that’s unique to you. For example, my advice to someone would be finding something that you love, and try doing it. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have to achieve a certain goal, but at least enjoy doing it.

Who are some of your favorite artists?

Picasso, of course. Iraqi Artist Nabeel Ali, I love his style and drawings. Also Najla Abdullah, I’m such a big fan of her work.

If your closest friends and loved ones were to describe you in three words, what would they be? I don’t usually like to talk about myself, but my loved ones will usually say that I’m crazy. Of course, it could be positive or negative sometimes (laughs), different or unique, and beautiful. al3nood_a_s

MUSIC

MAQAM Excavating the Kingdom’s underground music scene. By Jou Pabalate

It’s hard to imagine how a couple of years ago, the strum of a guitar would have made some folks a little uneasy in the city. Nowadays, such anxiety in appreciating music in public has turned into excitement. Events today include musicians, and it’s no longer a surprise to enter a restaurant with a constant playlist running on the background. A music community has always existed in the city, albeit, they kept their amps low

and their jams underground. With the paradigm shifting, people are now trying to find these talents and put them center stage, where they belong. Creating an ecosystem for musicians and with that, build a local music industry is where Maqam comes in. Jamal Bishri and Salah Alazhari, each carrying their guitars entered our office with huge grins on their faces. Once we were done exchanging pleasantries, I

asked them why they were in such a good mood: “People kept asking us while we were walking where we’ll be playing. They wanted us to play for them,” Jamal said. “These things show us we’re right on time, people are ready, in fact, they want music in Riyadh,” added Salah. Jamal has been a guitarist for 12 years, an architecture student, and a budding serial entrepreneur. Salah on the other hand has a decade of experience under his belt as a guitarist. He was part of a band called, “Bear and the Happy”, a project manager by education, and an aspiring sound engineer. Together, these 24-year-olds founded Maqam (musical scale in arabic), a hub for anything music related in the Kingdom.

“Through Maqam, we help teachers find students (and vice versa) wanting to learn how to play an instrument. We connect musicians with each other, and with people/events trying to find professional performers. We’ve also offered some basic recording workshops,” said Salah, who is currently working full-time on Maqam. “Our experience as musicians helped in sourcing fellow musicians, as well as determine the readiness of one artist from another. Sometimes it’s about chemistry too, you can jam perfectly with one group and totally be out of sync with another,” said Jamal when asked how they built their growing roster of talents. “We’re just in the beginning of our journey, our dream is to create a music scene.”

According to Jamal and Salah, one of the challenges they’ve had is securing venues for jam sessions as well as the music classes. “This is one of the things we are trying to fix, because eventually, we would also want to provide musicians with sound studios, and be able to connect them to other professionals who can help them with their projects.” Musicians and Music Enthusiasts, connect with them now: Web: maqam-music.com Email: info@maqam-music.com

There’s no doubt that Maqam is filling a gap in the music industry, providing a platform for indie artists and performers, to create a community that no longer lurks in the shadows but can claim their much deserved spotlight.

NISREEN GHANDOURAH Author of Al Nahr Al Thalith By Sumaiyya Naseem

ed FAVORITE CAFE: M oner CURRENT READ: St

bic by John Williams (Ara translation, Dar Athar)

Nisreen Ghandourah was a reader long before she published her own novel. As a child, the cabinets filled with books at home fascinated her, and the earliest seeds of writing were sowed while listening to her father read the stories in the Qur’an.

There’s so much beauty in the storytelling. Each chapter and section is written for a particular audience. The Qur’an taught me the importance of knowing your audience, and finding the right point of view and the reason you’re telling the story. — Nisreen Ghandourah

The metaphysical elements in the Qur’an fed her imagination and inspired her. A strong sense of language made her stand out in high school, and it was then that she realized she had a unique voice in writing. She believes that it’s important 40 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2018

to discover one’s creative identity, saying, “Writing takes hard work. Once you know your voice you can build it.” The Saudi writer was only 22 when she completed her debut, Al Nahr Al Thalith (The Third River). Soon after graduating from Dar Al Hekma University in 2005, she dedicated her time and efforts to writing a story about the Iraq war of 2003. It’s been a decade since her debut was published, and since that time she has established herself as a promising voice from Saudi Arabia. It was after the publication of her debut that Ghandourah evolved into a well-known and respected writer. Under the wing of her publisher, she was able to connect with readers at book fairs and literary events, the most recent being the International Jeddah Book Fair. She dedicated the next few years to learning more about her craft. “I understood that any work could be better, so I took creative writing courses. There are hundreds of references on writing, but I wanted to be around likeminded people who are passionate about stories.” The courses she took were from City University, London School of Journalism, and Oxford University. Armed with an eye for introspection, she began revisiting her favorite Arabic novels to analyze and explore what made a story or character interesting. In the previous year, she used Instagram as a platform

to share her thoughts on the books she’s been reading. Ghandourah doesn’t believe in the concept of star ratings, “I prefer appreciating books for their quality, even if they don’t match my taste. I look at the effort, idea, creative style and relevance.” In her reviews, she introduces the plot of the book, gives her opinion and highlights the main takeaways. Ghandourah teamed up with Jeddah Reads to give a talk on Naguib Mahfouz, titled Respected Sir, after one of her favorite novels by the late author. It was a chance for her to dig deeper and introduce local readers to the brilliance of the writer and how he captured an era of Egypt through literature. She feels it’s important to have such literary discussions in Jeddah, and more options for buying books. “We need libraries or literary clubs where people can get together to discuss books. When I was in my teenage years we had a problem with supply, but we can shop online now.” While collections in local bookstores are still quite limited, websites like Jamalon and Book Depository are good options for bookworms. Nisreen Ghandourah is currently writing her second novel, which is set in Saudi Arabia. The story follows a set of characters who were raised in Saudi in the 80s. “The main character is a horse trainer; I was inspired by the beautiful description of horses in classical Arabic poetry.”

Available on jamalon.com

Al Nahr Al Thalith follows three journalists on a mission to cover the untold stories of the war in Iraq. Ghandourah took up the task of conducting intensive research through documentaries, books, interviews, and diaries to expand her sense of Iraqi culture and society. Her novel shows that life goes on, but it’s up to people in a crisis to either recover or collapse. “I wanted to highlight the reality of war and its destruction of human legacy. Through my characters I portrayed how it affects people on a social and psychological level. War doesn’t solve problems, it just makes people scared of each other.”

Before KiraKira, there was “ ” [tir tir, Saudi slang for sequins]. And before red carpet fashion in Hollywood, there was Thursday night in Saudi Arabia.

For decades, Arabs have always been unapologetically overdressed. Call it #BeduFab or the by-product of a decadent lifestyle, but we‘ve always possessed a magpielike attention to all things Swarovski, and today, unfortunately, that obsession has gone to our heads – literally (Huda Beauty highlighters, anyone?). Our affinity of all things gaudy has allowed us to fill the void in the

international fashion scene, which was left by its current penchant for street style minimalism, a lethargic economy, and most recently, the tainted headliner in evening wear, Marchesa (thank you, Harvey Weinstein)! Nowadays, it’s common to see A-list celebrities struggling to announce the Arab name of who they are wearing. Red carpet fashion is just one way Arab designers are taking over the fashion industry.

In this issue, we pick a few of favorite red carpet looks by Arab designers to celebrate their international rise.

Go ginger using henna! Grannies don’t like using the harsh hair colors to dye their hair or hide the whites. Plus, it’s all natural, and strengthens and conditions your hair. Application: Combine powdered henna with warm water (you can replace water with black tea or coffee). Stir till the paste resembles the consistency of mashed potatoes. Add more water if you face difficulty applying it.

Mushat powder A combination of herbs, such as, cardamom, rosemary, chamomile, sandalwood, and similar herbs of medicinal quality – is used on hair. It strengthens hair; prevents dandruff and the growth of fungi, moisturizes, and gives your hair a lustrous look. Application: Add this powder in water and boil for a while. Transfer this solution in a sprayer and spray it on your hair. Make sure your hair and scalp are drenched in it. Let it sit for an hour, and then wash your hair with water and shampoo.

While giving us a more intimate insight into how they develop recipes, take photos of their culinary creations, and prove that a kitchen is not just a space in the house, we get to know two culinary bloggers and how they share their genuine passion for food with the world.

Njood Abdullah

After graduating college with a degree in English literature, Abdullah wanted to pursue her passion for baking and cooking. Starting an Instagram account in December 2016, she taught cooking not simply as a skill to have, but as an adventure, a wild ride, and a delightful experience.

Born in Dammam in 1991, Njood Abdullah is the cook and photographer behind the Njood Food instagram account.

Since she was 12, Njood has always loved being in the kitchen. “As a child, my mother made the effort to always have me and my sisters around when she cooked; showing us how to chop stuff, letting us mix things, and teaching us how to make simple recipes.”

FIRST EVER RECIPE: “The first recipe I developed was many years ago: a simple vanilla cake stuffed with strawberry jam and drizzled with a warm peanut butter sauce. It was inspired from my favorite classic dish: the pb&j sandwich.”

Her passion continued as she grew up experimenting in the kitchen and consuming cookbooks, Food Network shows, and YouTube cooking channels. “I find inspiration everywhere,” said Njood. “I have a list of recipe ideas in my phone that I add to when inspiration strikes.” When it comes to photographing food, Njood advises proper lighting. “Choose a room that has a big window with natural daylight and turn off any nearby artificial lights.”

Cookbook: The Baking Bible: by Rose Levy Beranbaum

A cooking hack that Abdullah loves using to melt butter is to pour boiling water into a large glass, leave it for a few seconds, toss out the water and then cover the butter stick with the heated glass. The heat and steam from the glass will gently warm and soften the butter in just a few minutes. njoodfood

Helping out in the kitchen was her favorite thing to do as a child. “My mother was a wonderful cook and she loved to entertain all the time,” said Al Thawadi. “I can still see myself hanging over the mixing bowls waiting for my turn to mix.”

After attending culinary college and teaching cooking for a couple of years, she attended food photography and styling workshops to be able to take better photos of the food she prepared. Soon enough, she started up her own blog and Instagram account. Al Thawadi is easily inspired by a delicious meal, local ingredients, cooking classes, pretty food photography, and new cuisines experienced while travelling. “The best meal is the one that makes me want to eat it all over again.” Describing her relationship with food as “a little obsessive”, Al Thawadi has her own list of essential tools in any kitchen: “A good kitchen knife, chopping board, sauté pan, wooden spoon and can opener.” She thinks of ingredients as building blocks to creating meals. Her most essential ingredients are “Arborio rice, dried mushrooms, stock cubes, onions, garlic, dried herbs and seasonings. ” With these ingredients, she knows she can always whip up a risotto.

For up and coming food photographers out there, Al Thawadi recommends keeping food real, “Pay attention to detail, composition, color, and use natural light whenever possible. It's also worth taking a short cooking course that teaches different cooking techniques. It’ll give you a better understanding of how to handle food, which in turn will improve your food photography skills.” foodandtools DESTINATIONKSA.COM 59

CRĂˆME DE LA CREME A dairy reverie at the heart of France.

We ventured to France on a culinary journey organized by Cream of Europe to discover the origins of French dairy. The trip took us to the picturesque countryside and onto the streets of Paris, where the finest patisseries have long mastered the use of exquisite French cream. Our journey begins at the heart of dairy produce, Normandy. It is in Isigny Ste Mere, a collective consisting of 430 farms and one of two protected designation of Origin Creams, 68 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2018

that we got to experience authentic provincial French hospitality. We were welcomed by the sight of cows grazing across green grass fields, the overcast above us warned of rain fall at any given time. This bucolic setting doesn’t only make for a tranquil scenic view but is in fact one of the secrets behind the superiority of French dairy products. Isigny Ste Mere is a top tier terroir. Its soil is rich and

This entails ascribing the level of authenticity and approved procedures in order to maintain the established reputation of a region in terms of its products in the marketplace. Our discovery trip to Normandy was followed by two refreshing days of exploring the key places in Brittany. We learned about terroir, a set of three natural factors (soil, topography, and climate) that impart certain qualities to the produce grown in the region. When cows graze on the special flora, the cheese that is later produced from the milk reflects the quality of the terroir. Gaec de Toul Manac’h Farm

fertile, the region has mild weather throughout the year, and if you pair that with their strong producer culture that has been preserved and mastered throughout centuries; you have the best conditions to produce excellent milk and thereby, exceptional cream, butter, and other dairy ingredients. A visit to their factory opened our eyes to the rigorous process of milk production. The cooperative ensures that it meets POD (Protected Origin of Designation) standards.

In Brittany, we also visited GAEC de Toul Manac’h, a Paysan Breton farm, where we explored the milk-production units and the special care that goes into animal welfare. To ensure maximum comfort for the animals, the farm we visited was equipped with massage appliances for the cows. They also had music in the stables since cows produce more milk while listening to music. To further provide comfort to the animals, the farm incorporated automatic machines that milked the cows at their convenience. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 69

Interestingly, Brittany is one of the two milk-producing regions that has ideal climate for farming. In fact, it is the most important milk-producing region in France. The farms in Britanny are largely familyrun, where skills are passed down from one generation to the next. The informative trip to Brittany was followed by a sweet gastronomic adventure. We headed towards Paris, fashion capital and equally, haute dessert central. We witnessed and tasted how French cream are artfully incorporated to transform desserts. 70 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2018

During our visit to La Maison de la Crème by Elle&Vire, we attended a masterclass and demonstration by Chef Ludovic Chesnay on choux à la crème filling. Our most memorable stop was at the Un Dimanche a Paris, a patisserie where its renowned executive pastry chef Nicolas Bacheyre held a unique workshop focusing the fine qualities of this famous ingredient. For a couple of hours, the scent of vanilla and oven fresh baked goods marveled our sense. We were captivated by the skillful manipulation of French cream, known for its ability to withstand rigorous culinary application, to create velvety whitescapes and fluffy toppings. The flavors beautifully matched the pristine aesthetics, delicately balanced and textured.

Visit to Gaec de Toul Manac’h farm with Mr. Jaouen

We went back to Saudi Arabia with a newfound appreciation of French creams (President, Elle & Vire, Paysan Breton, Isigny Ste Mere) and other French products with the PDO seal on the supermarket shelves. Now all we have to do is master the techniques, and recreate the French culinary reverie we’ve experienced at the comfort of our homes. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 71

A Journey to the Edge of the World

WITH FOUR SEASONS RIYADH An extraordinary and thrilling trip to Riyadh’s most famous horizon.

Hence, it was a wonderful surprise when the Four Seasons Riyadh invited us to try their latest extraordinary experience. We wondered how the luxurious hotel can put a spin on an outdoor excursion we’ve been on so many times. But ‘lo and behold, Four Seasons did not just manage to offer us a new way of seeing the Edge of the World, they wrapped it nicely into a carefully crafted experience the hotel is known for. 72 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2018

COURTESY PHOTO / FOUR SEASONS RIYADH

For Destination, a trip to the Edge of the World has become an annual tradition. The year doesn’t seem complete without a day spent watching the sunset atop one of its famous cliffs.

Our journey started with a quick trip to Bujairy, where we got to listen to a little bit of history about Riyadh and the makings of this particular UNESCO heritage site. It was a good way to get into a cultural mindset before heading out to the Edge of the world. We braved the off beaten tracks in style, on-board black Escalades equipped with Wifi and driven by professional drivers from the hotel. After a couple of hours, we reached our destination and were greeted by the gentlemen of Four Seasons, gahwa and finjan in hand. As we looked

over the horizon, we see the silhouette of a tent being built on the topmost cliff, where we would later on have lunch. The sound of an engine caught our attention, and right at that moment we were told that we will have an experience of a lifetime—flying over the edge on a microlight aircraft. We can attest that a bird’s eye view of the Edge of the World will leave you in awe. The wind swept desertscapes contrasting with seemingly endless blue skies is breathtaking. We had the chance to reflect on this bucketlist moment over the

sumptuous lunch that ensued after. Executive Chef Ahmed prepared for us an authentic Najdi feast with a signature Four Seasons twist. We indulged in Saudi classics, like ghorsan, kabsa, jareesh, and Hinaini. But also, mixed grill delights (you must try the lamb chops) and smores made for a wonderful hearty meal. Our day ends with the sun preparing to sleep on the horizon, our tour guide reveling us with stories of Bedouins and natural wonders. Eventually it’s time to leave, and we make our way back to urbanity. Tel: +966-11-2115888 DESTINATIONKSA.COM 73

IN BAHRAIN

How significantly is the role of poetry to our life? Poetry is a way of life. It is not just the text. Rather, poets view the world with a sense that differs from most people. They use their poetic sensuality to interpret their interactions with everything in their environment.

Do you think people are born poets, or can they train to become poets?

THE Rebirth of Poetry Sit-down with renowned Bahraini poet, Qassim Haddad. By Alexander Woodman

Poetry is one of the most powerful instruments to express one’s inner world. It is an art, which acts as a conduit to transform words into meaningful and purposeful expression. In the Kingdom of Bahrain, Qassim Haddad, is a global poet extolled by the locals. I had a wonderful opportunity to discuss poetry with this legendary Arab poet in his homeland. 74 DESTINATION SHARQIYA FEBRUARY 2018

It is a combination of both. My generation, those born in the 50s and 60s, were born into poverty because of the socio-economic crisis. We had to work to earn a living. Many did not have the luxury to study literature and poetry at the academic level. Nonetheless, for those of us who had an aptitude for poetry, we were able to excel in it. Despite the hardship, I was fortunate to come from an educated and religious household, which could afford to give me an official education. Regardless of our background and challenges, we appreciated the life that we experienced.

What makes Arabic poetry and literature unique in comparison to Russian, Persian, or other ethnic poetry?

I have read many forms of poetry from many different cultures. I read either the translated or transcribed forms. I observed that the Arabic language is unique. Unlike the Latin languages, it has not changed. The language has maintained its original form carrying with

it the Arabic heritage, as it courses its way through one generation to the next. The Arabic language is profoundly descriptive and melodious by nature. It is suitable for poetry, because this art requires a colorful, rhythmic, and an extensive vocabulary to express itself. Due to the language, Arabic poetry has been mistaken for music to listeners abroad.

As a Bahraini, who is familiar and close to Saudi Arabia, do you think there is a strong poetry presence in KSA?

Mostly, I try to keep up with poets from the older generations and those within my generation. Generally, most of them believe that there is a powerful movement in Saudi poetry. This dates all the way back to the 70s, and it should not be underestimated. Also, the experiences of the recent and current generation of poets do resonate across the Middle East.

Alexander Woodman (right) with the legendary Qassim Haddad

In general, do you think Saudi has produced quality literature and writers within the past few generations?

Like poetry, the new movement in literature is comforting because it shows that the new generations are not willing to settle for more of the same thing. It is especially pleasing to see the new generations showing and developing interest in filmmaking. The art of filmmaking is an enriching visual experience. The Middle East is known as an active society since the olden days. We learned about things through seeing them from an up-close and personal perspective. For example, we learn about literature through oral tradition, prior to the advent of the written tradition. In the late 20th century and beyond, the entire Arabic community began moving towards new forms of cinema and theater. These forms began with the collaboration of writers, actors, painters, musicians, and illustrators. They eventually developed into communities specific to the artists’ professions.

In what ways would you use Saudi Arabia -- as a country, a heritage, and an identity as symbols in your poetry?

It is not easy to personify Saudi Arabia. However, if I had the chance, it would be helpful to see a human experience living in the Arabian Peninsula. I would symbolize Saudi Arabia as a misunderstood human being, who is fully capable of self-expression but is sadly inaccessible to the rest of the world.

How does the new generation, especially young Bahrainis, feel about poetry?

The problems with the readers of the new generation are two folds. Firstly, academic institutions tend to focus on poetry and literature of the old rather than modern works. Consequently, this generation believes there is nothing to seek, because the subject is irrelevant to them. Therefore, they seek online sources. This is a far cry from the poetry currently available.
