KITCHEN STORIES Journey into the hearts of Sharqiya’s kitchens

ISSUE 22 OCTOBER 2017

FROM THE EDITOR

HERE’S YOUR ULTIMATE GUIDE TO FOOD. People from different cities around the world would make the claim that food plays a huge role in their culture, and we Sharqawis are no different – our daily lives, social and professional interactions, and major or minor events revolve around the creating, sharing, and enjoying of good food. And why not? After all, as the saying goes, “Laughter is brightest where food is best.” In our annual Food Issue, we celebrate not only our love for food, but the relationships that surround our consumption of it. In Kitchen Stories, we peek into the hearts of Sharqiya’s kitchens through stories that, hopefully, will invite you to rethink what food means to you. This issue, from the Business section all the way down to our Travel section, is filled to the brim with restaurant and food suggestions, food in business, finds and explorations, and snapshots of our unique Sharqawi food culture. In preparing this issue, we came to realize what we always knew to be true: after all is said and done, kitchens are truly the heart of one’s home. Eat well, laugh often, love abundantly.

and reaching the position of a superintendent, Abdulrahman Al Ojaimi retired early at the age of 50. With an insatiable curiosity and desire to get involved with anything and everything since he was a kid, Al Ojaimi has a good deal of general knowledge that he’s willing to share. Right after retirement, he started doing what he’d always wanted to but couldn’t find the time for. “About a year and half ago, my daughter recommended that I start talking about sociology and share general experience and information on Snapchat

since there are not many people who do this out there.” In a few months, Al Ojaimi found himself growing famous and was encouraged to keep going by his followers. “I talked about consumer subjects and found myself heard and watched by millions of people, and was even invited to TV shows!”

I feel very proud of what I am doing. My main goal is to clarify issues for consumers in the business market and also to try to help in correcting some social issues. — Abdulrahman Ojaimi

Soon, Al Ojaimi created his own YouTube channel Al Ojaimi Dailies, where he’s uploaded more than 350 clips on different topics. Al Ojaimi encourages younger people to get involved in the stock market by starting small and growing slowly, or even consider having a small business alongside their regular jobs. But mostly, Al Ojaimi teaches us the impact of being informed and introduces to us the generosity of spirit that comes from giving back to the community any way we can. Abdulrahman Ojaimi a.alojaimi

BUSINESS

A MODERN DAY DYNASTY A sit-down with Al Othman Holding’s CEO, Abdulmohsen Al Othman By Dalia Darweesh

Al Othman’s dynasty began when Sheikh Mohammed Abdulla Al Othman founded a Trading and Contracting Establishment in 1967. This establishment specifically focused on finding the most talented contractors in the area to work with. During the late 22 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2017

‘60s, there was an upwarddownward cycle within the contracting business, that lead to having many contractors leave the industry and head to other fields outside of the contracting business such as the manufacturing sector within the dairy industry, amongst others.

Sheikh Al Othman has then decided to shift their focus to target new industries to diversify and expand within different sectors. In 1982, Nada, the Agricultural Production & Processing Company, was established with 1,000 Friesian cows and 4 trucks, to become one of the largest, leading producers, manufacturers and distributors of fresh dairy product, fresh juice, and long life milk suppliers in the region, until our current day and time. Nada products are also exported to Bahrain, UAE and Kuwait.

STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA ALDAWOOD

WHO’S WHO

Al Othman Holding Companies include: Nada, Takween, IMCO, Gotech, USG, Al Mohamadia Compound, Nada International School, CET, SSBS, AMO & Partners Engineering Co, RAVSCO, Kempinski Al Othman Hotel, FDLC, Al Othman Travel & Tours, Al Othman Office Tower and Al Othman Wood Industries, and MOC.

With “every sip counts” as their motto, it’s no wonder Nada has rapidly grown into success. Throughout the years, Nada has managed to produce the best dairy products that are made with 100% fresh milk. Currently, they have 20,000 cows on their farm and believe that the well-being of their cows is an essential factor to monitoring the quality of the dairy products produced. With Al Othman’s plans of diversifying and expanding, the second generation of Al Othman’s journey began when there was an industrial expansion within the company. It was then that, Sheikh Mohammed’s son, Abdulmohsen, has joined the establishment as a CEO, alongside his brothers to add on new projects and businesses. Thus, it was the appropriate time to create “Al Othman Holding Company,”

which included the several businesses that Al Othman Company owns, under one umbrella. Consequently, Al Othman has turned into this well-established dynasty that we know of today. We had the pleasure of sitting with Mr. Abdulmohsen, and asking him how his day, as a CEO, looks like. “I start really early in the morning. I am normally at the office around 6:30 or 7 am.” He starts his day with reading the latest news then moves on to checking his emails. “It is best to start work early in the morning, to start fresh” From 9 am onwards, he begins his meetings internally, and later takes a small half an hour break for lunch. When the workday is over, he heads back home to spend time with family “and I try to do some sports.” Occasionally, he would go out for social or business dinners. Finally, “I watch the news first, then sleep as early as possible if I can.” Additionally, Mr. Abdulmohsen shared with us important information regarding stepping into a business within the food industry. He applauds the younger generation for becoming very enthusiastic about operating businesses within the food industry. However, being enthusiastic about a business idea is not enough to achieve a successful business model.

“My first advice is to ensure that you pay attention and carefully study every move you make before starting a business.” It may take longer than a year to execute a business idea if an individual doesn’t do enough research. Consequently, his second advice was to spend the right amount of time with collecting all the necessary information through research. “The area and location of the business, in addition to knowing the current market’s needs, are essential factors when going into the food business industry. And finally, move smart.” Each person deals with their work life and the pressures that they face daily, differently. “Challenges are always my motivation. The more I am faced with challenges or difficulties within the work place, the more it is exciting for me to tackle on more tasks”. Mr. Abdulmohsen explained. Al Othman Holding Company holds various businesses within that are wildly diversified. From a strategic point of view, they are currently in the process of grouping these many businesses under subumbrellas (anchors), and food is one of them, in addition to the oil and gas industry. Baked for Success Sharqiya’s favorite family-owned bakeries By Dalia Darweesh

The art of perfecting baked goods is not as easy as it sounds, but these local bakeries in Sharqiya made it happen. Throughout the years, these prominent family-owned bakeries have built a brand name and a presence for themselves. They went from having a dream to turning it into a reality. Here is an overview of three family bakeries in Sharqiya, and their development throughout the years.

Dammam and Medina, Aryaf wanted to expand further. They started distributing within the Eastern Province and planned to also include more branches. Their current distribution cities are 12 in total, including Dammam, Khobar, Al Hasa, Riyadh and Jeddah. To keep up with the fast-paced development in Saudi, Aryaf’s central factory was established in Dammam back in 2005.

Aryaf Bakery produces a wide range of breads in addition to pastries, sweets and different cakes for special occasions. Their clients include big names such as Saudi Aramco, Saudi and foreign airlines, in addition to a large number of franchised restaurants. They also offer catering services for functions including weddings and special events. Tel: +966-13-8200295 Web: aryaf.com

Their journey started out with two bakeries – Qassim Bakeries in Dammam, and Aryaf Bakery in Madinah. In 1990, Aryaf was included under the umbrella of Al Majdouie Group, to meet the growing demand for bakery products and desserts in the Eastern Province. Al Maameer Bakeries and Sweets

Their continuous development and innovative methods and technique through manufacturing has made the bakeries stand out until this day.

The idea of Al Maameer Bakeries and Sweets originated, developed and then was established in 1995. The purpose was to provide outstanding baked goods and delicious assortments to the Eastern region, with savory and sweet pastries, breads,

cakes and Arabic desserts such as baqlawa. Al Maameer has gained a successful presence within the Eastern province through the services and baked goods that they provide in their showrooms within different locations, one in Khobar and two in Dammam.

FOR THE LOVE OF FOOD (and the City) The love affair between people, food, and places.

Abdulaziz's favorite order: Chicken and Waffle

By Dalia Darweesh and Noura Al Joaib

When you combine a passion for gastronomy and a love for a city, you get magic; local joints that satiate and satisfy. You also get a sense of pride. Saudi talents working hard to give the towns they love something special. “Khobar deserves it”, one of them tells us. We had a sit-down with the owners of these local joints to learn more about this love affair.

MORNINGS TASTE SO MUCH BETTER NOW

Picture this: bright pastel colors, diner-style interiors, top hits sung in 40’s and swing style playing in the background, and the likeness of a cat you probably have encountered at one point in your life, painted all over the walls. Welcome to Seven, where happiness could start as early as (believe it or not) 7 am. When I first heard about this place, I could not conceal my excitement. A diner specialized in brunch you say? now. What I could not have anticipated was that, behind the menu brimming with the yummiest fusion dishes, there are three Saudi men, all heart and hardwork, behind Khobar’s newest breakfast/ brunch spot. Three friends united in passion, differing in skillsets, are the owners: Asim Al Harthi, The Culinary Director, Omar Bakhurji, The Engineer, and Abdulaziz Al Damegh, The Marketing and Administration Guru. Seven was conceived, designed, and developed, by

Saudis. Down to the creation of the menu and curation of the coolest playlist ever. Proud yet? The passion of food lead the way – and the necessity of creating something extraordinary set the tone. “We believe that food is a major entertainment venue in our community, so it is critical to set a satisfying ambiance for customers. This is reflected in the interiors, service and most definitely, the food.” With that, the three gentlemen are striving to deliver a full experience.

But why Khobar? “Khobar is deserving,” Asim tells us, “it belongs to everyone. Hence, the city deserves to reflect its eclectic inhabitants.” In the Tri-City area of Dammam, Dhahran, and Khobar, the latter has become the ultimate destination for dining, shopping and leisure. The recent ramp up in the art scene has added depth to the city. From exhibitions to pop-ups, Khobar has become the most uplifting city to people of Sharqiya. “Introducing a great brand needs a city that will elevate and emphasize on all the characteristics we offer. And that’s why we use the hashtag #KeepKhobarWeird in order to stress on the importance of prevailing this city-theme, and we encourage 28 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2017

follow Khobarees to spread the message and introduce unique concepts to an already unique city.” Though the success of Seven is already apparent, it was not an easy journey. Two years in the making, this labor of love and pride began with an inspired conversation. Months of research, testing and approaching different entities, supplier, while roaming Khobar looking for locations, took place. After all that hard work, “voila! Seven is here”, they tell us. “The menu was a risk. We introduced items that were not common in the area but people of Khobar are adventurous. We also ensured that there was enough diversity to suit all tastes.

But what next? With something this good, we definitely don’t want them stopping. “The sky’s the limit!” After introducing Seven to Khobar, with no clue how it will be received, the partners and friends are humbled and proud by how well Seven has been received.“Khobar needs great concepts and we have in our pipeline a few others to be introduced with expansion plans to the GCC.” Combining passion and market insight is the main ingredients to the realization of Asim, Omar, and Abdulaziz’s vision. A vision to fill Sharqiya with reasons to smile. Location: Salaheddin Al Ayoubi St., Khobar eatatseven

We definitely welcome feedback. That’s the only way we can progress.” And speaking of quality, the team behind Seven are proud that all their dishes are the culmination of local goods. “We don’t want to start importing ingredients. We want to make sure we deliver consistency and by using only local ingredients, we can maintain a quality we will always be proud of.”

ONLY THE BEST

Most pizza places offered to us, in our current day and time, are categorized as fast food pizza stores. However, 8portions had a different vision. They wanted to add a new and unique concept to pizza-making in Saudi, through presenting their specialty pizzas in a healthier way.

WHERE COFFEE AND PEOPLE ARE THEIR INTEREST

Abdulrahman Almasary, who shared an interest, and a huge love for good coffee. “We live and breathe coffee.”

You can smell the freshly grounded coffee hanging in the air as soon as you walk into Qaf on an early morning. For a coffee lover, there’s nothing better than starting your morning with a cup of a strong, freshly brewed java.

This interest was the common reason that brought this group of Sharqawis together and it was also what inspired them to start a coffee roasting business and coffee shop in Sharqiya.

That was the vision of five friends based in Sharqiya; Abdullah Alkhudhair, Ahmed Asiri, Hasan Alkhudhair, Abdulraof Almulhim, and 30 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2017

What does food mean to you? By Noura Al Joaib

I often think about what it will be like to grow old. I imagine myself as an older woman, with my husband of 55 years holding my frail hand in his own, surrounded by three generations of my descendants at an enormous dinner table. I envision eclectic and traditional dishes side by side, with dozens of people talking over each other in an effort to be heard by the person sitting next them. I imagine the youngest of my grandchildren struggling to get a bite of food into her mouth with her plastic spoon, determined to do it herself and refusing all attempts to help her accomplish this labor of pride, much like I am probably 32 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2017

doing, being an 85-year-old woman. When I think of that future, I can’t help but smile; who wouldn’t want to be surrounded by so much love. Love. It is the one emotion that we can never have too much of. It’s possible to be too happy, or too excited, but never too loved. Love is the driving force of our existence; it is what makes our lives worth living. To many, food issimply a means of acquiring the nutrition we need to grow. I disagree. I believe that food is much more than that; it is a deep and profound expression of love. Whether it’s a father learning to cook

just to give his daughter a dining experience “like in the movies”, or a mother laboring to sell her home-cooked food to provide a better life for her family, or simply a lifechanging conversation, food is an expression of love that transcends time, culture, and can redefine the meaning of family. What follows are personal stories that our writers have been kind of enough to share, experiences that, I hope, will invite you to rethink what food means to you, and to reflect on how much love you have in your own life via this universal experience.

Hassawis know how to party! By Hajer Al Alwan

Food is celebrated in Middle Eastern cultures like nowhere else. Certain foods bespeak for certain seasons and occasions. And when I say “celebrated”, I mean something along the lines of “shared” with loved ones and neighbors. I know this is true when it comes to how things go back home in Al Ahsa. One of the top foods that come to mind whenever I think of certain occasions is beloved Mamrous before the wedding day.

STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA AL DAWOOD

As a child, I always dreaded social settings that included more than five people being in one room, and I grew up still dreading them. But there’s one exception to that. It is family gatherings that took place in our huge family farm prior to weddings, aka “Mamrous Day.” As a kid, I knew what that meant. Alongside spending long hours in the pool, playing hide and seek among palm and lime trees, and climbing that massive hazel tree facing the white and purple stairs that lead to the hall in our farm, there’s the joy of taking part in the cooking process of Mamrous by the elder women in the family. Where a huge pot (that would fit a 7 yearold) is placed outside and all the ingredients which mainly consisted of flour, dates and water are shoved together and left to slowly cook.

What is Mamrous? Mamrous is usually made from pitted dates, butter, whole wheat flour, cloves, cardamom, and nutmeg. It has a crumbed consistency and brown in color.

Everyone takes part in the process, from children to older women in the family. At the end ofthe day, the fresh Mamrous is put in equal amounts in containers to be distributed to all the family households and neighbors’

and friends’ houses. Up until today, whenever we randomly get containers of Mamrous delivered to the house, I know someone’s weddingis close in the neighborhood, and something happy is about to happen! DESTINATIONKSA.COM

Because it isn’t Eid if there’s no Ma’amoul By Noura Al Joaib

One of the most consistent and vivid memories I have of Ramadan is the night before Eid; my cousins and I would be called to my grandmother’s house, Taita as we all call her, to undertake a most sacred ritual: making Ma’amoul. Every year, for as long as I can remember, that night spent on the kitchen floor of my strongwilled aging grandmother’s home was how I said goodbye to Ramadan. The kitchen table would be pushed to one side, plastic would cover the floor, and Taita would assign us tasks. She would give us directions in a stern voice in between telling us the story of how she had learned to make Ma’amoul 60 years ago back in a little village in Lebanon where she grew up, a story she told us every year, but one that we were always eager to hear again. The highest praise Taita could give, was to assign the coveted task of dough duty. We would ask her how she felt leaving Lebanon to come to Saudi Arabia with a man she barely knew at the time, my grandfather, God rest his soul. As we filled the dough balls with the fillings of our choice (Taita always insisted on sticking to the classics: 34 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2017

As we worked late into the night, the smell of rosewater would hang in the air, and we would all be covered in flour and powdered sugar, Taita included. Taita would be the first to taste the completed Ma’amoul, and we always got her nod of approval, which led us to believe that we were the best Ma’amoul makers on Earth.

dates and walnuts), Taita would share how lonely she felt, but how determined she was to build a home with my grandfather, who had left his own hometown in Najd to make a life for himself and his young wife in Sharqiya. We pressed the dough into special molds of carved wood as one of my cousins would inevitably ask Taita how she felt as a Lebanese woman in Saudi Arabia, to which the poor offender would get a look from Taita that could freeze lava, followed by slow measured words from her that she is Saudi. The rest of us would snicker at having drawn Taita’s ire before she would snap at the rest us to get back to work, which we would appear to take seriously, while she smiled when she thought no one was looking.

As Taita got older, it became harder for her to make Ma’amoul at home. Still, she insisted on doing it herself, rejecting pleas from her grown children who told her they could easily provide with store-bought Ma’amoul. No, she would rebuff. Her children and grandchildren would celebrate the holidays with homemade pastries, as they had always done. As the years passed, I often wondered why she didn’t take up her children, my mother and uncles, on their offer; maybe it was that she simply preferred the taste of homemade Ma’amoul, or maybe it was her way of preserving a heritage that is from a past almost forgotten. On the eve of Eid a few years ago, when I saw Taita give her nod of approval, I finally understood. Seeing my cousins sitting together on the kitchen floor, covered in flour, laughing, talking, and ultimately just being together, I realized Taita had been teaching us to love each other, she just happened to use Ma’amoul to do it. The entrepreneurial spirit of mothers By Alzahra Al Dawood

When you think about simpler times, your thoughts usually take you back in time. When my mother was even younger than I am today, she used to support her family in every way possible. The support wasn’t merely in knowing how to cook and clean—skills expected from women of her time—no, she took a step further. By breaking away from the conventional, my mother started her own business to

support her family financially. How, you may wonder. Simply: She started her very own “mini market”, or as they call it: “bastah”. A bastah is when you lay cloth on the ground, cover it with items, and sell to passersby. She initially began selling candies and other snacks. Influenced by the culture and local taste, she upped her game and introduced bajilla (fava beans) and nakhi (chickpeas) to her basta. These legumes were low in cost and affordable, and are labeled nowadays as super foods due to their high value of nutrients. My mother used to wake up early in the morning to start the preparation to cook a kilogram of each legume. The bajilla and nakhi were served in small cups or bowls and covered according to one’s preference with a variety of toppings such as chopped tomatoes, leek, ground cumin, vinegar and hot chili sauce. In my hometown of Sihat, many people can still be found today selling cooked legumes on the side of a road. More often than not, I stop whenever I come across one to purchase a cup of nakhi. Not only because it’s one of my favorite snacks, but because I find myself wondering: what brings this person out here today; or, whom does this person love so much that they are willing to spend hours, often out in the heat, just to make their loved ones’ lives a little bit better.

Not your traditional Saudi love story. By Mariam Al Ghareeb

meal for lunch, but this did bother me. I wanted to experience the regularity of a family dinner, “just like the movies.” I approached my father regarding this dream of mine and the next day, he hurried to my aunt’s house carrying nothing but a pen and torn pages from my notebook to learn how to prepare a proper meal. I do wish that I was there to fascinate over him learning something new but as far as I know, he loved every minute of that experience and expressed utter joy in recreating the dish as he came home with a hoard of spices, a bag of rice, and fresh chicken.

I grew up learning that art, in its own grand scheme, is entirely effortless when compassion takes center stage showcasing that cooking, is indeed, love made visible. For instance, when I was young, there were times I would hurriedly run to the kitchen to find a plate of peanut butter, apricot jam, and cheddar cheese with pita bread on the side waiting for me on the dining table. While devouring my sugary breakfast, I’d find my father squeezing the flesh of a healthy-looking orange for

me from the corner of my eye while my mother would be in the drawing room, caking her face away. The imagery of all of this is far more complex than a spread of Nutella on plain-white bread, for it would always be the clocks in time that would frustrate my parents regarding their inflexible working hours and the time to prepare a meal for me before my stomach would begin to sing – thus, introduced the reliance on fast food. I’m not going to lie and say that I hated having a happy

I remember seeing his eyes glued on the notes he took and setting every single ingredient carefully as if he were to create a masterpiece of some sort. The happiness as he created the dish was contagious to everyone, as was his work in progress, for it was the intent that made the dish look and taste absolutely delicious. Though my father presumed that his first dish was merely beginner’s luck, I felt that cooking was a personal art form of his to which he never discovered until he had no other choice but to. Through all of this, he feels that he is nothing more but an ordinary man who is simply fulfilling his duties as every father should but, in my eyes, he is a man who decided to wear his cape backwards and call it an apron. Your traditional Saudi love story. By Dalia Darweesh

Growing up in her hometown in the heart of Riyadh, by the age of 17, my mother got married to my father who’s from Madina. Because of my father’s work circumstances, they were obligated to move all the way to the Eastern Province to start their new life there. My mother was and still is an excellent cook, since she learned it from my grandmother. However, there was a colossal difference between the Najdi (Central region) food that she grew up having, and the Hijazi (Western region) food that my father was used to. 38 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2017

At the beginning of their marriage and right after their honeymoon, both my mother and father were nostalgic, and they were yearning for home. Luckily, when they first moved to Dhahran, my mother got to know some of her neighbors, and one of them happened to be from Makkah. One morning, my mom decided to surprise my dad and cook his favorite Hijazi dish for dinner. He always talked about Saleeg and how much he missed having it. After all, what’s more comforting than your family’s love and food. On that morning, and as soon

as my father left to work, she called her neighbor and asked for the recipe and tips on how to perfect this dish. Hence, the result was scrumptious. That day, even though she still missed her family, sharing that meal with my father while he felt the love in every bite as happiness filled his eyes, was enough for her. They both felt home, away from home. What is Saleeg?

Saleeg is a traditional dish that originated in the Hijazi (western) region of Saudi Arabia. It is white rice cooked with broth, butter, milk, and topped with baked chicken.

You can take the Saudi out of Arabia but… By Noura Al Joaib

It’s the late ‘70s and our protagonist, Abdullah, has just set foot in Portland, Oregon. In a time when many of his generation seized the opportunity to pursue a higher education abroad, Abdullah was full of hope to begin this new and exciting chapter of his life. But aside from the promise of a brighter future, the United States during that decade had a lot to offer this teenager from Qassim. Vinyls were discovered, carrying the tunes of Zeppelin, Abba, and the Rolling Stones. Harrison Ford movies. Trans Ams. Afros. Boy, did he embrace it all. This young man of limited English found himself. And then it kicked in, homesickness. He started calling his family three times a week instead of once. He listened to the few cassettes of Arabic music he’d brought with him till he wore them out. It helped, but still he yearned for the sights, sounds, and smells of home. And the food. Oh the food. He missed it. Margoog. Jareesh. Klaija. His mouth watered for them, but he was so far away. So our protagonist decided to take on the challenge. A call to his mother provided him with the recipe he needed. A few days of hunting for the right ingredients followed. And then, he began. The process had to be followed exactly, quantities

for each of the hunted down spices had to be precise. Sweat beaded his forehead. He hadn’t thought it would be this difficult. A few hours later, came the moment of truth as the first bite of Kabsa made its way into his mouth.

The smell, the taste, they were exactly as he remembered. And for a few moments, he believed it: he was home. Today, Abdullah, my father, is renowned throughout the family as the best Kabsa chef, just minus the afro. DESTINATIONKSA.COM

Why Biryani means forever By Filza Siddiqui

The mixture of spices fills the air. My father and brother come back from Friday prayer and we all sit down to enjoy a plateful of biryani while discussing random topics and sharing a laugh. This is the distinct memory I have every time I look at biryani, and trust me, I have looked at biryani a lot in my life. I mean, it’s hard to escape it.

From a low-key get together to a full-blown wedding; whatever the occasion may be, you always expect the king of Pakistani cuisine to make an entrance. Honestly, at this point, biryani has definitely become a household staple. I don't think there is a single Pakistani on the planet who has not had it. Biryani consists mainly of chicken and rice

but can differ in a variety of ingredients in various regions. From the masala-seeped potatoes to the fiery chicken taste, this traditional dish is a mouthful of zest and spice. It reminds me of the love and comfort of home and happiness. Even with a room full of different people, the look and aroma of the dish quickly makes me aware of a possible Pakistani present in the crowd. It makes me feel a sense of belonging, pride for my country, and the love for my family. Best Biryani in Town? Mast Biryani Location: Prince Nayef St. and 18th St., Khobar

12 MONTHS to a Healthier You Add or remove a habit every month. By Mai Kholief

TOPIC OF THE MONTH: BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH As part of the 12 Months to a Healthier You campaign, we pay respects to all breast cancer fighters, survivors, and caregiver families and friends.

The leading causes include obesity and chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, being overweight or obese after menopause increases breast cancer risk. Before menopause, ovaries make most of estrogen, and fat tissue makes only a small amount. After menopause, most estrogen comes from fat tissue. As a result, having more fat tissue after menopause increases the chances of being 56 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2017

There’s no sure way to prevent breast cancer, but there are things you can do that might lower your risk. While you can’t change some risk factors such as family history/genetics and aging, there are lifestyle factors you can control. Breast cancer is known to be more common in women, typically after menopause, but there is a very rare, less than 2% chance of men being diagnosed with the disease.

DID YOU KNOW Eating foods rich in vitamins & minerals may also decrease the risk of breast cancer. A diet rich in fiber, antioxidants, fruits and vegetables, and low in sugar, trans fats and processed meats and foods is highly recommended.

diagnosed with breast cancer. Moreover, women who are overweight tend to have higher blood insulin levels, which have been linked to breast cancer. The link between weight and breast cancer is complex, but it’s highly recommended that you stay at a healthy weight throughout your life by balancing your food intake with physical activity and avoiding excessive weight gain. Adults are recommended to get at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week (or a combination of these), preferably spread throughout the week. Cancer screening exams and tests at an early age are also recommended if there is family history of cancer. It is important to go for exams such as mammograms after the age of 40.

You already know that diet and exercise will impact your health positively and there’s no denying the health benefits! Incorporating a healthy and active lifestyle will surely reduce your risk for serious, life-threatening diseases, so why not give it a try? DESTINATIONKSA.COM

60 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2017

Tell us more about yourself.

I started sketching at a young age. In my third year of high school, I had a teacher who once asked us to start sketching anything we wanted and to express ourselves. When I showed her my piece, she told me that I had the vision of an artist, which made me take art more seriously. Only a year ago, I began stepping out of my shell and experimenting with painting on canvas. Making pencil sketches is within my comfort zone. Thus, painting on canvases was a major shift for me. I became more attached and enthusiastic about painting, and people became even more interested in my art.

Who is your favorite artist?

Vincent Van Gogh. He’s got a favorite quote of mine, and it goes like “I dream my painting and I paint my dream.” This quote speaks to me on so many levels as I can stare at his beautiful art for hours, especially his painting The Starry Night.

When did you first realize that creating was something you had to do? In the past two years I relied on observing the work of artists I look up to. Last year, I launched my own collection, which was inspired from meditating and appreciating life’s beauty.

What are you trying to communicate through your art?

I try to paint the beauty that I see in life. My art is for people who are interested in nature and its beauty.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I’ve received is from my mother. She told me that I shouldn’t pay attention to all the negative comments that are meant to

put me down, and that I should just focus on the art I make and learn from my mistakes.

What inspires you?

I love nature, and it inspires me. My interest in nature surpasses my interest in living elements (people). There is something about nature that is serene and peaceful, that gives me the right motivation to paint. When I paint something inspired from nature, I feel like my art speaks best for me.

What do you want to be remembered for?

I want to be remembered for my art. I want for whoever sees my paintings to think of beauty and positivity, because that is what I try to reflect with my art.

If your loved ones were to describe you in three words, what would those words be? Passionate, adventurous, and an art lover. ghaliaa.art

Hungry for TV? Try not to binge watch! By Nadia Sakkal

As much as we love to eat, we also love to look at other people create and indulge in delicious dishes. Here are food-related movies and shows that make us all wonder, “Why didn’t I become a chef?” Food for a living, anyone?

Movies Chef

Julie & Julia

“You’re never going to be happy cooking for someone else,” says Carl Caster’s exwife while he’s on the verge of losing his job as head chef. He realizes it’s true and soon starts his own tacos food truck. I found this story hilarious, and also contemplative – we’re all on our own path to redemption, it just depends on how willing we are to break the “normal” circle of life to get there.

Ever wonder if you had a previous life? Julie Powell wishes she would’ve been Julia Child in the past. Though separated by time and space, their mutual passion for cooking, fearlessness and lots of butter, helps them accomplish goals. And both seem unable to finish anything they start, perhaps something many of us who have a tendency to abandon personal missions can relate to.

2017’s Most Exciting Thriller Readers are either loving or hating “Into the Water”. By Sumaiyya Naseem

“The Girl on the Train” was a thriller sensation a couple of years ago, and with a movie starring Emily Blunt talk of Paula Hawkins’ debut did not die down for a long time. Hawkins’ next book “Into the Water” was a highly anticipated release this year. I loved her debut when I read it back in 2015 because it helped me get out of a massive reading slump. Since then I’ve read plenty of crime fiction 64 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2017

and thriller novels to know that “The Girl on the Train” was an exciting read but not a personal favorite. So I approached “Into the Water” gingerly, unsure of whether I’d love it or hate it. It didn’t help that there were so many mixed reviews online. “Into the Water” is a literary thriller and it’s a slow burner. The novel follows several characters that live in a small town with a river running through it. The river is a source of great intrigue and mystery in this story because it’s where witches were persecuted centuries ago and several “troublesome”

women drowned. The main protagonist is Jules Abbot who has returned to the small town after the apparent suicide of her sister Nel Abbott whose daughter she now has to take care of. The sisters had a faling out in their teenage years and a large chunk of the novel follows Jules’ anguish over not being able to reconcile their difference before Nel’s death. Although I’m a little tired of the troubled women trope in crime fiction, my interest was piqued by the mystery surrounding the Drowning Pool and the women who died there, and I give credit

LIBRARY CARD

to Hawkins’ writing for that. What was the story of the women who died? What about the people they left behind? A version of what happened to them is explored in an alternate narrative within “Into the Water”. These are sections from Nel Abbott’s controversial project on the Drowning Pool that had managed to stir hostility in the community. But was it the reason she died? As I waded deeper into the novel the murky and sinister undercurrents of the story gripped me. Hawkins’ atmospheric writing deserves a lot of credit for the experience of reading this thriller; it’s smooth and saturated with haunting descriptions and details. Perhaps one thing readers should be wary of is the cast of characters; there are too many perspectives in the book and it can get confusing. None of the characters are people you would like, but yet I felt eager to see the stories intersect. Overall, “Into the Water” is a quiet thriller with an anticlimactic ending that will not make your heart race, but it will make you weigh in on human nature. Suspense-lovers might want to skip this one, but if you’re appreciative of literary thrillers then this will be a satisfying read.

An introduction to quintessential Bahraini treats By Noura Al Joaib

If you’ve ever been to the darling island of Bahrain, then you must have made your way to Muharraq, Bahrain’s 3rd largest city. Muharraq is known for its winding, narrow alleyways and the abundance of beautiful traditional Bahraini houses. For centuries, the city was also the Arabian Gulf’s pearling capital. A cultural hotspot steeped with

history, Muharraq has a lot to offer visitors and those who call it home. Today, we’re introducing something else the city is known for: Food!

Two essential treats loved and found in almost every house in Bahrain: Halwa and Mattay.

HALWA

(more popularly referred to as Halwa Bahrainiyya) Thanks to trade and close commercial ties with different countries, halwa found its way to the island of Bahrain. This sweet delicacy originates from Tanzania, and was introduced into the Gulf, more specifically Oman and Bahrain, more than a century and a half ago. Bahrain rapidly became popular for its take on halwa and enhancement on the original recipe. For anyone who has never had the pleasure

FLAVORS OF: MUHARRAQ

of trying it, halwa is a jellylike sweet prepared with corn starch, saffron and various kinds of nuts. Muharraq is known for halwa thanks to the Showaiter family based in Muharraq itself, who have created a dynasty synonymous with halwa on the island, refining the recipe until it became recognized even beyond the Gulf. Today, halwa still remains an integral part of local Bahraini hospitality. It comes in different colors depending on ingredients added to it, with toppings that range from almond shavings to crushed pistachios. It is best served

with Arabic coffee, to balance its sharp sweetness. Visitors to Bahrain always try to make a point of buying halwa to take back home. Now where is the best place to get yourself some of that local decadent goodness?

We love Hussain Moh’d Showaiter Sweets, where a range of different flavored halwa can be sampled before buying. Innovative flavors and the classic favorites are both available. Web: showaitersweet.com Location: Sheikh Hamad Ave, Muharraq, Bahrain showaiter_sweets

MATTAY

Another national favorite that is also perfected in Muharraq is mattay, originally a snack mix from the Indian subcontinent. It consists of a variation of seasoned dried ingredients such as fried lentils, peanuts, chickpea flour noodles, chickpeas, flaked rice, fried onion and curry leaves. It’s served either mild or spicy, depending on your preference. There is no shortage of mattay-selling shops all around Bahrain, but Muharraq is guaranteed to give you the best and freshest. SAFFRON

Price: SR 70 (for 2-3 people)

While you’re out exploring Muharraq and all it has to offer, make sure you grab a traditional Khaleeji breakfast. And no one does it quite like Saffron by Jena. Located in an old restored home in a narrow alley in the heart of Muharraq Souq, this gem is not the easiest spot to find, but it sure is worth it. Order the breakfast platter (great for sharing) and enjoy an assortment of

shakshouka, foul, beans, balaleet and more. A total of 9 items is served within the platter with a side of bread. Don’t forget to ask for karak (cardamom tea with milk) to finish off your meal, while listening to old Khaleeji music playing softly in the background. Location: Boomaher Ave, Muharraq, Bahrain saffronbyjena
