Happy birthday Saudi Arabia! What better way to commemorate the founding and unification of our fine nation than with an ode to its history and the milestones that will be ushering us into the future. Thank you for everything KSA.

12 DESTINATION SHARQIYA SEPTEMBER 2016

Saudi Arabia is the 13th Largest Country in the World

Saudi Arabia spreads across 2,149,690 square kilometers of land. In contrast to other countries, it is the largest in the Middle East, about the size of Western Europe and one-quarter the size of the United States.

National Day is Always September 23

King Abdulaziz is the founder of modern Saudi Arabia and he led and participated in all major events leading to the unification of the country on September 23,1932.

Saudi Arabia is the Cradle of Islam

The Holy Quran was revealed to the Prophet (PBUH) in Makkah and Madinah, beginning about 610 AD. This alone made the Kingdom a very important location for the Islamic community, and a yearly destination for Hajj and the cradle of Islam.

Largest Oil Producer, to this Day

From the mid-20th century, the discovery of vast oil deposits propelled it into a key economic and geopolitical role. Saudi Arabia is the world’s largest repository of petroleum, having about one third of the world reserves of it. This made the Kingdom into one of the most important allies in the world.

King Faisal Abolished Slavery

Some of the major accomplishments of Saudi Royalties include King Faisal’s abolition of slavery in 1962. He also took a stand for women and the importance of education.

Al Amriyah Gallery, located in Khobar, is the life-long collection of the late treasure hunter, Mohammed Al Amer. The gallery is home to various historical artifacts distributed across 21 halls. Also check out the Al Ahsa National Museum, a smaller yet just as interesting collection of items from different time periods.

Castles and Palaces

Tarut Castle is one of the most popular historical ruins in Qatif. Also be sure to check out Qasr Darin, another historical castle famous for pearl trade. In the area of Al Ahsa, there is the Ibrahim Palace, now converted into a mosque and museum. Another popular spot is the Sahod Palace.

In 1985, Prince Sultan Bin Salman became the first Saudi, first Arab, and first Muslim to travel in space when he rode aboard the U.S. space shuttle Discovery for a seven-day mission.

No need to worry about maintenance and repairs since they are taken care of by the property landlords.

No capital building. Your rental payments are economically irreversible. However, no exposure to the real estate market and no anxiety on price volatility.

WHERE ART MEETS REALITY An absolutely lovely chat with interior designer Nebras Aljoaib.

DESCRIBE THE NEBRAS ALJOAIB DESIGN IDENTITY IN THREE WORDS. "Timeless, tasteful and artistic."

By Norah Al Eisa

I loved everything related to art and design growing up, so I decided to pursue a degree in interior design. I felt then, and strongly believe now, that as an interior designer, I get to be a designer, a painter, an artist, a furniture-maker and buyer, a contractor and a decorator all at once.

16 DESTINATION SHARQIYA SEPTEMBER 2016

Tell us a bit about the first project you worked on as a freelance interior designer.

I worked on two residential projects in parallel: the Abu Dhabi project and the Man Cave project. Both were super challenging but made me realize that I was on the right track and I would be doing this for the rest of my life.

You’ve previously defined your work studio as a multifunctional design space, not an office. Can you tell us more about that? I don’t like the word office; it's rigid and boring. When I first began looking for a space to move my business to in order to both expand my operations and horizons, I was adamant in finding a space that would leave me inspired. Interiors

What made you decide to pursue a career in interior design?

play a big role, definitely, but location and structure were very important as well. Once I had found the right spot and designed and decorated it, I had the studio of my dreams.

designers have the flexibility to move around the studio to any area that brings out their creative best, may it be in front of the wide windows or in a quiet corner.

The studio comprises of operational areas for design work, but there are many nooks and open spaces to be utilized for showcasing as well as small events. Also, my

Have you considered doing collaborations?

Yes I've considered it. I would love to collaborate with an architect or jewelry designer someday.

What sort of project would you like to collaborate on? Can you give us examples? I’d love to collaborate with an architect on a furniture line. As for jewelry, I’d love to bring together different elements using materials I'd use in my spaces, like earrings out of marble and brass for instance or bangles out of wood and wire.

WHICH COLORS, TEXTURES AND FURNITURE PIECES DO YOU MOSTLY GRAVITATE TOWARDS? COLORS I usually start with either black or white and gradually add a scheme of neutrals. Then I accent the space with pops of color, blue being my alltime favorite.

TEXTURES

Do you prefer doing commercial or residential projects?

Commercial because they give me design freedom mixed with reasonable timeframes, plus I get to go all out.

What design magazine do you hope to see your work in? Architectural Digest.

Your top business advice to creative entering the design industry? Perseverance.

18 DESTINATION SHARQIYA SEPTEMBER 2016

I love layering and patterns. As for texture I usually go with raw against refined.

FURNITURE I am all about mixing old with new. I don’t like overly-themed spaces. My design aesthetic revolves around creating a space that is artsy, effortless, easy on the eyes and most importantly, gives off the feeling that it’s a collection brought together over the years. Steps to Elevating CSR

The question often asked: How can CSR become relevant within the organization? By Amr Banaja, SEDCO Holding Group

20 DESTINATION SHARQIYA SEPTEMBER 2016

1. Clarity on Goals

When setting up a corporate strategy function, make sure your goals are clear. In the short run, this will help align the stakeholders, and in the long run it’ll help you see the progress.

2. Alignment From the Top

Due to operational costs, the CSR practitioner will face hurdles if the CEO and board of the company are unaware of the long-term value of CSR.

CSR LITERATURE 3. Stated Values

To ensure that CSR is part of a company's DNA, it needs to be embedded in the stated values. Stated values answer questions about the safety and environment of the workplace.

4. Embedding the Value of CSR Within the Organization

Here are five ways to effectively embed CSR in your organization: • Make sure your top leadership clearly articulates the company’s commitment to corporate citizenship. • Make sure you have the right structure for executive officers to manage and monitor the company’s citizenship strategy and performance. • Engage your stakeholders. • Develop comprehensive CSR reports. • Link compensation to attainment of CSR goals and targets.

5. Strong Corporate Governance

Corporate governance calls on corporate boards and managements to actively engage stakeholders to face

today’s economic, social and environmental issues, both short and long term.

6. Stay Connected

Most young consumers and employees in this day and age are socially conscious and think that companies should support the environment and community. They are likely to maintain their relationships with responsible brands.

7. Aim to Create Collective Impact

Follow these two steps for results. • Coordinate your efforts so that each stakeholder can participate without overlap or repetition. • Always make sure there is constant communication between the various stakeholders, along with easily shareable and measurable performance indicators.

8. Never Give Up

By the year 2100, the world population is expected to double reaching over 14 billion. It is our duty to act responsibly to sustain what we have today for the future generations.

Get involved in the worlds of business and CSR. By Sohila El Saadany

“The Purpose Economy: How Your Desire for Impact, Personal Growth and Community is Changing the World” Aaron Hurst, Founder of Taproot Organization, argues that developments across the country may seem unrelated, but will result in a pattern of growth that drives the economy forward. “Making Change Stick” (Harvard Business Review Studies) The book helps readers improve problem-solving skills and tackle unfamiliar territory in the vast business arena. “Corporate Social Responsibility: Doing the Most Good for Your Company and Your Cause” Companies are expected to give back to society through charities, so this book delves deep into why this is not only useful for communities but for the business itself. “Social Responsibility and Business Ethics” This book in Arabic explains the importance of ethics to business growth. WORKING MAMAS What to do when you have to juggle baby and work.

By Eman Bukhari

There’s great admiration for mothers with full-time jobs (on top of their already fulltime job of being a mama). It’s obviously overwhelming, but a few tips can help create a supportive system to ease the load.

22 DESTINATION SHARQIYA SEPTEMBER 2016

From the start, let your first day back to work be towards the end of the week, giving you time to ease in and adjust slowly. The first three years come with the major question: who will take care of your child while you’re at work? Unless you have a nanny at home, the answer is usually a daycare. When researching spots, always

consider the following: the place’s hygiene, the staff’s qualification and the nannyto-child ratio. Also, are the activities stimulating enough and are the hours flexible? As for regular communication, many daycares today even have social media accounts and can send you updates on how your child is doing. Early on, a daily routine for your child decreases anxiety

IN AND LISTEN Recognizing and tackling the signs of bullying. By Lama Ghazzawi

People get bullied at every age for being different; having different accents, nationalities, colors, opinions, social status and financial income are all things that will get you bullied. The worst part is: no one officially does anything about it. It’s all part of growing up and ”standing up for yourself.” There aren’t many programs at schools explaining what bullying really is and how to deal with it. Children go home without shoes, with bruises, black eyes and scratches. They can even not show any symptoms but still seem so distant and quiet. In this case, emotional trauma is a definite link. 24 DESTINATION SHARQIYA SEPTEMBER 2016

In an interview with Sara Al Sudairy, the owner of Kids Talents, she shares the importance of building a child’s character at a young age. Stories of the Prophet (PBUH)’s kindness and compassion are always being told, but it is never made clear to children how to connect them to real life situations.

STAFF PHOTO/NAWAF ALFARRAJ

The camp hosted an antibullying campaign prepared by Princess Norah University students. It taught children exactly what bullying is and helped them figure out for themselves the correct ways of dealing with it. This is an important step that shouldn’t be skipped, because as much as you tell people that something is wrong, they have to be put in the situation in order to realize the impact it could have. And that is exactly what the program did for students; it made them realize just how much of bad effect bullying could have on people, but it does that in a simple, understandable manner for children. As a mother, Al Sudairy also talked about making things clear to children. Telling them right from wrong at a young age, showing them exactly how to deal with different people and situations. All of this leads to bigger understandings in life. This being said, a good way to avoid bullying is to make other positive activities

available and continue proper supervision. This alone will drastically reduce the level of bullying between children and create a more creative, united environment where everyone gets a chance to add something special.

Bullying is a topic people tend to avoid talking about. But, what if it’s happening to people you love while you don’t even know about it? Web: kidstalentsksa.blogspot.com akidstalentsksa doingitwithluv

College-Life Hacks Don’t be the stereotypical frazzled college student; follow these tips to stay organized. By Deema Al Bugmi

SYLLABUS

KEEP A PLANNER

If you’re a visual person, a planner will go a long way. It will lay out all the things you need to get done during the week. A good tip is to sync your calendar to your laptop to your phone. Color-coordinate your work according to its category such as school, work, or to-do.

34 DESTINATION SHARQIYA SEPTEMBER 2016

DOWNLOAD YOUR SYLLABUS

If available, log in and check out the lecture slides ahead of time. Download/print and go through the syllabus for each course. This will help you get an idea of what the content and assignments will be about. By doing so, you will be prepared for any questions thrown your way in class.

DON’T PROCRASTINATE

I’m guilty of procrastinating, so I know just the trick to help you avoid this nasty habit. Set yourself some dedicated study time. Turn your phone off, disconnect from the Internet and give your work your undivided attention for two hours. If you need more time, take a 15-minute break in between.

5

Struggles Every College Student Knows

1. 8 a.m. classes

FIVE MINUTES FOR CLEANING AND ORGANIZING

You will be amazed at what you can do in five minutes. Just set a timer and do some basic organizing chores: put papers in the right folders, delete those extra files you don’t need on your laptop and so on. It’s a simple way to always stay de-cluttered.

No comment. Just, sigh.

2. What is sleep? Getting good grades, having a decent social life and sleeping well seem to always be in competition in a balanced life. For some reason sleep is always the first out the window.

SLEEP WELL

I saved the most important tip for last. We always seem to overlook sleep and view it as a choice rather than a necessity. Sleeping well is not only crucial to your performance, but it’s also very important for your health. To get a good night sleep, set a sleeping time and stick to it no matter what. Customize when to sleep according to your schedule, but always ensure to get at least seven hours of rest.

4. Difficult professors You must’ve come across that particular professor that you just can’t seem to please. You can have William Shakespeare write a paper for your English Literature course and they still won’t like it.

5. Hell week 3. Getting grouped with slackers When you have to carry the workload of three other people because no one wants to put in the work.

Hell week is when even Satan sits back cheering on the professors. It’s when all midterms, assignments and projects are due IN THE SAME WEEK. Not cool at all.

SMALL

WONDERS Young author, wise words – Sadeem Al Nahdi.

My name is Sadeem and I’m 11 years old. I’m from Jeddah, but I live in Saudi Aramco, Dhahran. I study at Dhahran Ahliyya Schools and my hobbies are reading, swimming and creating artworks.

Can you tell us about your book?

My book is called “I Will Always Keep My Promise.” It talks about a very important lesson every mother should teach her children about honoring promises and not spreading personally-shared secrets to others. 36 DESTINATION SHARQIYA SEPTEMBER 2016

Tell us about yourself.

What inspired you to write this book?

In first grade, my friend shared a big secret with me and I was not supposed to tell it to anyone. But, because I was young and I did not know the value of keeping a secret, I told everyone about it, which made my friend mad at me. That was the end of our friendship.

What was your experience working with the illustrator like?

I was so glad that Myra Al Mir was my illustrator because she added a lot of excitement to the story.

How was the publishing process like?

The process was not easy at all. People think young writers cannot write properly. I believe young writers are capable of writing if their environment supports them.

don’t tell me.” Also, the major key to write is to read. Read stories daily and discuss what you read with adults.

Any advice for parents?

My advice to all parents is to make sure your child never misses a day without reading. At the same time, don’t force them to read. Try to combine what your child already loves with reading or within the stories.

You favorite books or writers?

I love “Charlie and The Chocolate Factory” and “Matilda.” I’ll read anything by Roald Dahl or Dr. Suess. sadeem_alnahdi

Who is your target audience?

Any child 6-12 years old.

Do you have any writing advice?

First, try to write down every idea that pops in your mind. You can write from your imagination or based on a situation that happened to you. Then, draw an outline to determine the characters, setting, main problem, solution, summary of events and the moral lesson. After that, start adding extra details to grab attention. HAIR

US OUT The Defensive Playbook Hair-saving hacks for the girl who likes to play in the sun. By Areeb Al Shathri

48 DESTINATION SHARQIYA SEPTEMBER 2016

With this local heat, our friendly sun will do more than just kiss the ends of your hair for that signature beach dweller look. It will launch a full-blown attack on your most vulnerable soldiers… your hair.

The Best Offense is a Good Defense

Tips to Remember

If you can’t find hair sunscreen, just dilute skin sunscreen with water and put it in a spray bottle.

First Aid

Sunscreen… yes, that’s right.

Some stores may carry heat/ sun protection for your hair. Whenever you’re preparing to do battle with the sun, armor your hair with a few sprays and your soldiers will thank you for it.

Your tarha is your best friend.

Covering your hair whilst out in the sun is a must, and luckily for us it’s pretty much mandatory. If a tarha isn’t exactly appropriate dress code where you’re going to be, switch it up with hats or caps.

If you don’t have any of these masks or oils and don’t feel like going out, you can replace them with almost anything with moisture including conditioners. Seriously though, your kitchen probably has seven different substitutes. You have no excuse.

Hair, like the rest of your body, needs moisture. Without it, your hair becomes dry, frizzy, damaged and easily breakable. Treat your hair with masks or oils overnight to help restore some of your lost moisture. We recommend using coconut oil or, our favorite, argan oil.

Landmines to Look Out For Heat styling your hair in this weather is essentially the equivalent to shooting your own foot. Your hair is already sustaining too much heat damage from the sun to handle your flattening iron’s friendly fire. If your hair desperately needs to be styled switch out of the iron with your blow dryer, and only use it when your hair is a little damp WITH heat protection spray.

If you have bleached or dyed hair these recommendations become commandments unless you want your hair to turn green or fade away.

CRAZY ABOUT CAFÉS We get the lowdown on running cafés with Nizar Aloufi, owner of Dallat Al Faris. By @saudifooodie

How did you start with the idea of a café?

Successful businesses are the ones that have high demand and are frequented every day. So I decided to invest my time and experience in establishing a traditional coffee shop with modern touches. I wanted it to capture the essence of historic and contemporary Khaleeji life through every element of its design, from walls and ceilings to furniture and utensils.

What is your vision for your business?

A worldwide Saudi brand that serves Arabic coffee and traditional desserts and dates in a luxurious and comfortable atmosphere. We want Dallat 56 DESTINATION SHARQIYA SEPTEMBER 2016

Alfaris Café to increase awareness about Khaleeji culture throughout the world and to make our delicious Arabic coffee easily accessible to anyone.

What's your secret to keeping customers coming in?

A wide variety of products and great service is our key to keeping our customers satisfied and earning their loyalty. Our dedicated partnerships with creative Saudi entrepreneurs adds an exclusive array of treats and delicacies. We’ve had great marketing campaigns with our partners, including our five-day campaign with Careem and Karak Day, which had proved to be very popular.

What were the three most important things to get your business up and running? Passion for my vision, patience and good communication skills.

What’s your experience in balancing your personal and professional lives?

It gets really complicated! I have another full-time job, I’m married and a father. It’s not easy to dedicate time to every aspect of life, and sometimes I have to make sacrifices. Support of family and friends helps. They are always there during tough times, and I can rely on them for advice.

Antique wooden decoration.

STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA ALDAWOOD

What advice can you give to those wanting to open their own café? There’s no one good formula that guarantees success. Still, keep this in mind: Having a great idea is not enough. You need passion, patience and a positive outlook at all times. Above all else: It starts and ends with hard work and believing in your vision.

What are you working on right now?

We recently opened our second branch in Al Ahsa and are planning to expand and increase the type of services and products. It’s definitely time to find someone to manage day-to-day operations at the cafes. It will give me time to work on expanding beyond the Kingdom.

What is one mistake you’ve made and what did you learn from it?

I wasn’t careful in selecting my business partner. That was a very tough life lesson. Now I make sure the people I work with are trustworthy and are the right fit with the right skills. Location: Prince Sultan Bin Fahd St., Khobar dallatalfaris

Did you know that your morning coffee grinds make excellent body scrubs? The many lives of a food item is something that’s not always considered. So don’t just throw away your leftovers. I’ve found a couple of food recycling options that will make the most out of your food waste and help you save time and money.

64 DESTINATION SHARQIYA SEPTEMBER 2016

Food Prep

Ever have a dinner party where you're left with an abundance of food that you just don't know what to do with? Two words: food prep! Leftovers make great on-the-go meals and save you a lot of time and energy. Lay out some airtight containers and, depending on your leftovers, start preparing your on-the-go meals. You can either go the basic route and just divide up the remains into the containers or you can get creative and make new meals! Easy example: Leftover chicken makes a delicious chicken salad or chicken sandwich. These prepped meals will come in handy as work/school lunches and save you from ordering out when you’re too lazy and hungry to prepare meals.

Sometimes the food you have left over isn't edible, such as banana peels, egg shells, bones, etc. Can’t do anything about making that edible, but let me introduce you to the secret of your new green thumb: food composting. This is the process of breaking down organic elements to create a final compost that can be used to fertilize soil and improve growing conditions. Visit awfr-sa.com to learn more about how to compost and the benefits to it.

APPLY PRESSURE TO DIGEST A handy guide to improving your digestion through acupressure.

HOW TO DO ACUPRESSURE: By Dr. Rehan Taji

Unhealthy eating habits and growing addiction to canned and ready-made meals has led to increased incidents of hypertension, obesity, diabetes and cardiac-related health hazards. It has also disrupted our digestive system, triggering problems like indigestion, bloating, constipation, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), acid reflux (heartburn), diarrhea and more. Traditional Chinese medicine has long understood

66 DESTINATION SHARQIYA SEPTEMBER 2016

the worth of good digestion. A 16th century doctor named Yu Jia Yan wrote: “If the stomach is strong, life will be healthy; if the stomach is weak, life will be unhealthy.”

Performing acupressure on yourself is very simple:

Tied to that, modern medicine has accepted the effectiveness of acupuncture in effectively regulating the digestive system and strengthening its ability to break down food, absorb nutrients and eliminate waste, all of which helps you prevent problems.

• Use four levels of pressure, gently pressing deeper each time.

• Apply pressure on an acupressure point using the tip of your index finger, beginning lightly.

• At the deepest level, massage the area in a circular motion for at least 30 seconds.

HEALTHY SUPERMARKET

GUIDE Use these tips to make healthier choices as you navigate through those aisles.

1. Plan Ahead

Before going to the supermarket, plan your meals for the week and make a shopping list. Also, don’t go grocery shopping when you are hungry because that can make us more susceptible to overbuying and temptation.

68 DESTINATION SHARQIYA SEPTEMBER 2016

2. Shop the Perimeter

Concentrate on buying most of your food from the outer aisles of the store. This is where fresh foods like fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, and dairy are often kept. Limit the foods from the center aisles as these are generally more processed.

3. Buy Available Produce

Let’s face it, kale is very difficult to find. Luckily, you can get a ton of nutrients from other more readily available vegetables. When shopping, choose colorful fruits and vegetables for different colors mean different nutrients.

KEEP THIS IN MIND

WHERE TO BUY WHAT I frequent a variety of places that each offer their own specialties:

4. Buy Organic

Choose organic as they have no pesticides, no hormones and are non-GMO (geneticallymodified organisms). When unable, stick to foods on the clean 15 list (least contaminated with pesticides) and avoid the dirty dozen (most contaminated).

5. Limit Processed Foods

Highly-processed foods are stripped of nutrients and high in calories and artificial ingredients. These include white breads and pastas. Go for minimally-processed foods like whole-grain bread and canned goods that don’t have added salt, sugar or preservatives.

AL OSRA

Best selection of freshly baked breads. They also occasionally stock fresh kale.

TAMIMI

Excellent organic produce section. The general organic section of the supermarket also has a good selection of grains, flours and canned goods.

DANUBE

They have the largest selection of organic packaged products. Filled with organic grains, seeds, nut butters, coconut oil, milk alternatives, sweeteners and healthy snack bars.

ABAZEER

6. Always Read Labels

Ignore everything on the package except the food label and ingredient list. If the ingredients are a paragraph long, the product is likely not very healthy. Avoid ingredients that you can’t pronounce and wouldn’t cook with yourself.

7. Ingredients to Dismiss

If you come across any of these ingredients in packaged foods, don’t buy them: High fructose corn syrup, aspartame, MSG (monosodium glutamate), hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils along with food dyes.

Here you’ll find more specialty organic products, such as miso paste, dried seaweed, dried mulberries and freeze-dried fruit. BREAKING THE CHAINS

OF TRADITIONAL FARMING By Anaa Mansouri

Maher Al Buti is a Hofuf local who owns not only one of the oldest organic farms in the country but also one of the only nonprivate organic farms that produces to the public in Sharqiya. He received his organic certification in 2009 and has been producing organic produce every season since.

70 DESTINATION SHARQIYA SEPTEMBER 2016

Why did you decide to adopt organic farming? I was specifically interested to get off the addiction to pesticides and chemical fertilizer. As farmers we are slaves to that industry and all the money we make goes into buying chemicals that pollute the water and food and strip the soil of its nutrients. There was a governmental initiative to increase awareness about organic farming that showed me how to break free from the industry.

Do you face any challenges with organic farming? It’s a lot more work and our production dropped more than half in the first five years. The transition was also costly so we had to adjust prices just to break even. Also, the market doesn’t value organic. People may find it too costly to eat organically. This is how organic produce should be, expensive but long-lasting (in this case, what’s long lasting is your good health).

COURTESY PHOTO

Learn about one man’s passion to provide healthy produce for us all.

Has organic farming affected your water consumption? Definitely. Over the past seven years my water consumption has dropped from 45 minutes of watering a day to just 20 minutes. My electric bill was slashed from SR 3,000 to SR 1,200 a month. My soil has more essential nutrients, needs less water and consumes less electricity.

Any other benefits? Let’s talk bugs. Chemical fertilizer invites an invasion of bad bugs to the soil and inflates produce (stretching its skin too thin like a balloon). This allows bugs to break the skin easily, creating a cycle of attracting more bad bugs. Organic farming has led to thicker-skinned organic vegetables, deterring those bugs and also bringing in new ones I had never seen before that are actually beneficial to the soil.

Why don’t you sell your produce in local grocery stores? Most chain stores want an exorbitant rental price that kills my profit. However, I have been able to sell in LuLu Hypermarket. Otherwise I offer weekly boxes of vegetables to subscribing customers that pay up front for the whole season.

Al Buti on a tour with guests.

Is there anything you want to leave our readers with? Pay a little higher for groceries and skip the doctor bills. Prevention is the best cure.

What’s your season of productivity like? Our regular season spans from November to June. For Weekly Box Subscription: Mob: +966-546446108

FROM LUQMAN THE WISE Follow Luqman’s (RA) example described in the Quran.

Parenting Tips

1. Teach them to worship Allah alone. “And [mention, O Muhammad], when Luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allah. Indeed, association [with him] is great injustice.” [31:13]

2. Teach them to be dutiful to their parents.

Luqman Al Hakim was known for the excellent advice he gave when it came to parenting.

“And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years.” [31:14]

3. Teach them to be grateful. “Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.” [31:14]

4. Teach them that Allah is well-Aware of their good/ bad deeds. [And Luqman said], “O my son, indeed if wrong should be the weight of a mustard seed and should be within a rock or [anywhere] in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Indeed, Allah is Subtle and Acquainted.” [31:16]

5. Teach them to establish prayer and be patient. “O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination.” [31:17]

6. Teach them not be boastful, arrogant and proud. “And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone selfdeluded and boastful.” [31:18]

7. Teach them to walk and talk humbly. “And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys.” [31:19]

liha Ra

By Ma

Thikr is the singular of athkar, which means to remember Allah verbally or non-verbally. Remembrance of Allah is one of the greatest acts of worship and best acts of obedience. Shaikh Abdulrahman ibn As Sa’di said, “The phrase thikrAllah includes everything by means of which a person may draw close to Allah,

74 DESTINATION SHARQIYA SEPTEMBER 2016

such as belief (aqeedah), thoughts, actions of the heart, physical actions, praising Allah, learning and teaching beneficial knowledge, etc. All of that is remembrance of Allah.” (Riyaadh Al Nadhrah) Al Nawawi said, “Thikr is encouraged in all situations, except in situations referred to in the sharee’ah.

For example, it is makrooh (discouraged) to remember Allah (verbally) when sitting to relieve oneself, when having intercourse, during the Friday sermon (for the one who can hear the voice of the khateeb (orator), when standing during the prayer, at which one should be focusing on the recitation, and when one is drowsy.

The type of remembrance I’m talking about is the thikr apart from prayer.

1 Command

of Allah

“So remember Me; I will remember you...” (02:152) “…and exalt (Allah) with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and during periods of the night and at the ends of the day, that you may be satisfied.” (20:130) “And mention the name of your Lord [in prayer] morning and evening.” (76:25)

2 Means of

Protection From Every Evil

The Prophet said, "Allah says, 'I am as My slave thinks I am, and I am with him when he mentions Me. If he makes mention of Me to himself, I make mention of him to Myself; and if he makes mention of Me in an assembly, I make mention of him in an assembly better than it. And if he draws to Me a hand-span length, I draw near to him a forearm's length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him in a hurry.'” (Ibn Majah)

Aa’ishah said, “The Messenger of Allah commanded me, or he commanded to use ruqyah to deal with the evil eye.” (Bukhari)

3 Sins Get Wiped

Out – Gain Rewards, Rise In Levels

“…and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.” (33:35)

4 A Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH)

The Messenger of Allah said, “I seek the forgiveness of Allah and repent to Him one hundred times each day.”(Ibn Majah) He also said, “The example of the one who celebrates the Praises of his Lord in comparison to the one who does not celebrate the Praises of his Lord, is that of a living creature compared to a dead one.” (Bukhari)

5 A Means of Success

“And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah often that you may succeed.” (62:10)

6 A Source of Contentment

“Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.” (13:28) Web: aateam.org theislamicteam

EXPLORE KSA

Experience the Other Side of

FARASAN In case you’ve had enough of its pristine beaches. By Mohammed Mirza

To find artifacts, you’d need to take a closer look into the archipelago, comprising of 84 islands. From remnants of the Roman Era to ancient burial sites, all are dotted over various parts of the islands. For most tourists today, the most easily accessible historic sites are the ones that are the most apparent and closest to the main island. The beaches, the nature and a bit of snorkeling are what most tours have to offer. You’ll probably have to explore these places on your own.

78 DESTINATION SHARQIYA SEPTEMBER 2016

STAFF PHOTO/MOHAMMED MIRZA

The Farasan Islands have been earmarked for their clear seas, virgin beaches and coral reefs, but many are unaware of the islands’ rich history. Though the written sources on Farasan Islands are limited they do suggest that the archipelago has played an important role in maritime trade from the early Roman period.

AL QASSAR VILLAGE The construction of the fort dates back to the 18th century and it has seen a number of skirmishes since. There is a long-standing well right next to the fort; it’s highly likely the residents of the fort used it as their main source of water.

Dating back to the Roman Era, this deserted village is one of the oldest inhabited sites on the islands. The houses in the village are made from coral and mud that has hardened into solid rocks.

Restoration has taken place at the site and it forms one of the biggest attractions on the islands, mainly due to its proximity to the biggest resort on Farasan and the seaport.

Next to the village is an ancient Kedmi site that has large A two-meter high wall surrounds each house, which is geometric stones resembling Roman columns. generally one or two rooms.

OTTOMAN FORT Standing atop an elevated ridge of coral-stone on the outskirts of the main town, this Ottoman fort is strategically located from where you can see a good portion of the island’s seas. The fort has just one big hall inside, and it’s more of a fortification due to its small size. It’s a representation of local architecture as it was constructed using locally found construction materials. The walls are made mostly from coral rocks and the roofs using palm fronds.

BEIT AL REFAI Dating back to 1922, Beit Al Refai was built by a well-known pearl merchant, Munawar Al Refai. The house is considered to be the archetype of Farasani architecture. The intricate work on the gypsum walls in this building is unlike any other in the Kingdom. The ceiling of the exquisite majlis is engraved with colored ornaments. Similar to Beit Al Refai is the house of Hussein Bin Yahya Al Rifai, which is also on Farasan Islands, though lacking in grandeur when compared to the former.

AL NAJDI MOSQUE Pearl merchants were one of the richest members of the society on the Farasan Islands. Like the houses they built, the mosques that were funded by them are also most noticeable. The Al Najdi mosque was constructed by Ibrahim Al Najdi, who was one of the biggest pearl merchants on the island. Surrounded by houses on all sides, the mosque sits inconspicuously in a densely packed neighborhood.

The walls of the mosque are decorated with plaster-recessed ribs and each window on the qibla wall is topped with gypsum-decorated arches. The wooden mimbar and mihrab are said to be brought from India and are adorned with colorful decorative ornaments.

Hajj Zainal KSA’s Hero of Education More about Saudi’s first school. By Nora Alourfi

Hajj Zainal was so dedicated to his cause that he didn’t even wait to get a permit to formally open the school; some of the school’s students had their first lesson in one of the houses in the Old Jeddah district. Hajj Zainal’s funds also came from his own pocket. Indeed, his wife went to the extent of selling her own jewelry just to raise enough money to finance the school. Eventually, after the establishment of the Kingdom, King Abdulaziz himself supported Al Falah.

82 DESTINATION SHARQIYA SEPTEMBER 2016

Hajj Zainal spared no efforts in making the school the best it could be - and cared deeply about its students. For some graduates, Al Falah School wasn’t the end of the journey, since it sent its exceptional students to Egypt and India to continue their studies. Al Falah’s alumni have gone on to accomplish remarkable things. Among them are Prince Mish’al Bin Majed,

governor of Jeddah; Hisham Nazer, former oil minister; and Abdulwahab Abdulwasie, former minister of Hajj. Of course, it is impossible to name them all as it is said that half of the fathers of Jeddah have graduated from Al Falah. Truly, Al Falah School and Hajj Zainal have left a longlasting mark on Saudi society. COORDINATES 21°29'13"N 39°11'21"E
