FROM THE EDITOR

Editor-in-Chief Enas Hashani Managing Director Maria Mahdaly Executive Editor Bassma Al Toaimi Destination Riyadh Editorial Manager Jou Pabalate Destination Sharqiya Editorial Manager Noura Al Joaib

GREETINGS FRIENDS, When we set out to prepare this issue, we were filled with both excitement and trepidation. The former is not new when outlining many of our previous issues but mixed with the latter? That was a first. You see, this issue of Destination Sharqiya will leave something almost bittersweet behind. It is with much consideration–taking into account the changing tides, and exuberance over said shift, that we have decided to relaunch our beloved magazines into one, kingdom-wide publication. That said, in your hands you hold Destination Sharqiya’s last issue, along with its sister magazines (Jeddah and Riyadh). The future is bright and so is Destination KSA: a publication that mirrors the Saudi Arabia of today, with its heroes and rock stars, making a dent and a splash, locally and globally. But for today, we have this: prepared with love from cover to cover, starting off with a story on the aweinspiring Hajj season and the remarkable efforts exerted throughout it. We then pay homage to the regions of our three magazines, tipping our hats to the details we love about each one. We also have prepared a guide to the summer, because we all know it ain’t over yet. All in all, it has been a light issue to prepare, but one we prepared with hearts heavy with love. Thank you for reading this far. We hope you stick around for what’s coming next. Eid Mubarak, friends, from Destination’s family to yours. With love.

Enas Hashani, Editor-in-Chief

SOUK OKAZ Celebrating the cultural renaissance of Saudi Arabia. The General Culture Authority (GCA) participated in a variety of events at this year’s edition of the Okaz Market Festival in Taif, from June 27 – July 2. The festival became a platform for engagement, drawing in visitors from all over Saudi Arabia and the rest of the world. The Culture Avenue, which received 78,000 attendees during the festival, consisted of 14 pathways showcasing various literary, artistic, and heritage activities. 10 DESTINATION SHARQIYA AUGUST 2018

Okaz Market is meant to highlight the cultural initiatives of the Kingdom as part of Vision 2030. The most important of these is the empowerment of national talent and the creation of a platform for Saudi creators to share their work with the general public. The GCA has set up a program for all types of creativity through 14 parallel paths, including book support, poetry evenings, film competition, Arabic calligraphy, theater, music, painting, and photography. The aim was to introduce the public to the popular songs of Khobeiti, Mahjur, Rayeh and others whose masterpieces expressed the wealth of Saudi’s musical heritage. HAJJ:

A JOURNEY OF SPIRITUALITY AND DISCOVERY Saudi Arabia welcomes the world. By Noura Al Joaib and Basma Baarma

Ritual. It is a powerful word. It conveys an image of people, coming together with a single purpose; a state of mind fueled by shared beliefs, a place of gravitas, and a sacred sequence of activities with meaning that cannot be explained, only understood. Rituals are common to all the world’s communities, irrespective of their binding factors or sizes; and, they are as varied as the people of the world. The Maori people of New Zealand’s wedding haka is an ancient ritual where the men from the bride’s family stomp their feet and stick out their tongues in a display of respect to the groom, welcoming him into their tribe. This ritual is no less significant than the one that compels three generations of a Saudi family to come together every Friday at the home of the 87-year-old woman whom they all call some variation of “mother”, a generation or two removed. Now, imagine with me, if you will, a ritual whose history spans thousands of years, and whose community numbers in the billions. It is a ritual that compels people who share no common language, who are 16 DESTINATION SHARQIYA AUGUST 2018

spread to literally every corner of this spinning blue sphere we call Earth, and for whom poverty and affluence cease to have meaning; it compels them to come together, in the Holiest of Lands, to reflect on their lives, their faith, and their relationship with humanity, through a series of actions and prayers that test them physically and spiritually. This once-in-a-lifetime ritual transforms those who undertake it, if they are willing; it is the ultimate test of equality and humility. This is Hajj, the journey of pilgrimage and one of the five pillars of Islam. Yet, this is but one side to Hajj. Hajj has, since its beginnings, had another side to it, a critical side, that is often overlooked. While the pilgrims who come from all over the globe are often the focus of Hajj, and rightly so, this ritual would not be possible without those whose privilege it is to serve Allah’s guests. Since before the time of Islam, providing for the needs of pilgrims making the then perilous journey to Makkah, has always been deemed an honor. Ensuring the pilgrims’ security, providing them with food and drink, and, perhaps most critically of all, religious guidance on the intricate rituals of Hajj, has long been a critical priority for each society, caliphate, and nation that has had Makkah contained within its borders. During his reign, King Fahad, Allah have mercy on his soul, adopted the title of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosque, in the ultimate display of humility and service to Allah. This side of the Hajj DESTINATIONKSA.COM 17

ritual has enabled people to perform this holiest of pilgrimages uninterrupted for over a thousand years. The Hajj is a unique ritual. It has remained largely unchanged since the birth of Islam, yet has managed to embrace technology and innovation to introduce convenience to the pilgrims where possible without sacrificing the spiritual development that comes from this ritual. It is through this careful balance of revere for the Hajj and the desire to continuously improve the Hajj experience, that the number of pilgrims exceeded 2.35 million in 2017.

Dr. Bassam Ghulman, Deputy Minister for Transportation, Ministry of Hajj and Umrah

SOURCE PHOTOS/CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATION AND MINISTRY OF HAJJ

Dr. Bassam Ghulman, the Deputy Minister for Transportation for the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, is working diligently to introduce the next critical technological enhancement to support the pilgrims performing Hajj. As the Director General of the Haramain High-Speed Rail Project, Dr. Bassam has been responsible for the development of this 60-billionriyal project, the largest in the Middle East. This network will operate 35 high-speed trains that will shuttle more than 1.16 million pilgrims between Makkah, Jeddah, Rabigh, and Madinah. “Currently,” Dr. Bassam tells us, “to provide transportation services to more than 2 million pilgrims during Hajj and Umrah seasons, we need over 20,000 buses. We’re working towards providing a shuttle service that will reduce this number, and increase efficiency and safety for the pilgrims.”

One of the stations of the Haramain High-Speed Railway Project, which will transport Hajj pilgrims

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will continue to enhance and develop the Hajj experience for pilgrims from all over the world for the foreseeable future, while maintaining the sanctity of Hajj itself. Yet, ultimately, Hajj is a truly personal experience. No two individuals who have ever been to Hajj will tell you the same story, yet they will each tell you that it was a profound experience that changed their lives forever. Whether you chose to attend Hajj this year, or you stand in support of a loved one who is going through this marvelous spiritual journey, or you have chosen to financially sponsor

the pilgrimage of a stranger who can’t afford to pay his or her own way to complete this one-in-a-lifetime ritual (a stranger whom you will probably never meet but whose life you will change forever), or if you have chosen to simply observe the masses of people on TV as they come together in the most spectacular ritual in history, I promise you, that you will be forever changed by this experience, if you allow yourself to be.

Hajj mabroor and Eid Mubarak to you and your loved ones!

CRYPTO WHAAAT? Welcome to the latest buzzword: Cryptocurrency By April Tosch-Jamjoom

20 DESTINATION SHARQIYA AUGUST 2018

Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and Ripple, to name a few other buzzwords. The past couple of months have been very exciting for crypto enthusiasts. Many who invested last year saw monumental gains only to be disappointed by high losses beginning in 2018. As is the tale of nascent markets, volatility will remain high until the market stabilizes.

WILL IT STABILIZE? YES. SO WHAT ARE CRYPTOCURRENCIES? Simply stated, they are units of value that are a natural progression of currency. Cryptocurrencies are virtual, are not backed by any commodities or governments, and operate via an underlying framework known as Blockchain. Consider Blockchain the tracks, and cryptocurrency the train.

Blockchain is a decentralized, peer-to-peer validation system that allows units of value to be sent and received without the necessity of a median. The transactions are recorded in ledgers that are maintained in perpetuity within the network. Saudi Arabia has joined the ranks of Blockchain early adopters. In February, the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority (SAMA) entered in a pilot program with Ripple, a US fintech company, to use

Ripple’s Xcurrent proprietary software to facilitate settling cross-border payments instantly. It is estimated that the adoption of Xcurrent will reduce remittance costs by up to US$400m per year. Ripple has its own cryptocurrency coin XRP, which is ranked 4th among the strongest cryptocurrencies being actively traded. Cryptocurrency trading is still in its early adoption phase. As its lifecycle progresses and more people enter the trading sphere, markets will grow further and stabilize. Saudi Arabia and other governments have been eyeing crypto trading with skepticism. Many countries have attempted all-out trading bans only to later retract restrictions and instead create legislation pertaining to Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs). However, the cat has already been let out of the virtual trading bag with the myriad of global cryptocurrency exchanges that allow for crypto trading to be conducted online, across borders. Regulating authorities have very little muscle in imposing trading restrictions and have no option other than to grudgingly capitulate, which they are doing.

PROCEED WITH CAUTION

from engaging in risky investments that could lead to significant losses. • Do Your Own Research (DYOR) holds true in any speculative endeavor, including this one. However, the Kingdom has stopped short of enacting any cryptocurrency trading bans and has recently hinted at creating a new cryptocurrency in partnership with the UAE. • In addition, Nicholas Maduro, President of Venezuela, recently proposed a new oil-backed cryptocurrency and floated the idea to all OPEC members. This infers that not only is the Gulf region allowing cryptocurrency trading, it is also joining the ecosystem and actively participating in its growth.

THIS IS THE FIRST OF A THREE-PART SERIES EXPLAINING CRYPTOCURRENCIES. FINANCIAL ADVICE IS NOT GIVEN. THOSE INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING IN CRYPTOCURRENCY EXCHANGES ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO DYOR.

•Saudi Arabia has warned against individuals investing in ICOs, to protect its public

PUBLIC ART SPACES: A CITY'S LUNGS How boldness made Sharqiya’s heartbeat By Abdullah Yasawy

Public art spaces reflects and reveals our society and adds meanings to our cities’ uniqueness. Public art humanizes the environment and beautifies spaces by transforming our alleys and neighborhoods into starry nights of art. Cities aspire to have a strong communal identity, it's what sets that particular city from others. As Aristotle once said: “The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” This implies that it’s not entirely necessary for an artist to draw an idea thought for thought, but rather to interpret it from the soul and the meaning it holds to them. As the homegrown Saudi artist Ahmed Buali said: “Art in my perspective is all about colors, love and positive vibes,

what could bring us more together?” Areas with beautiful art expressions tend to break the trend of blandness and illustrate the creative minds of those who reside there. It reinforces the community by giving it a stronger sense of identity and place. Public art is essentially a reflection of time. In a way, it acts as a marker in human history. Early ancient settlers in Arabia understood the importance of art by drawing on cave walls, depicting their daily routines and rituals. Some of these could be found in 1,500 of Saudi Arabia's 4,000 registered archaeological sites. From the times of our ancestors to the early settlers in pre-Islamic times almost 1,000,000 years ago, they all knew that art connected us in one way or another.

GHAREM STUDIO Don’t Shoot the Messengers

Blending into the beige suburbs of Riyadh with high walls and an unassuming gate, lies a sanctuary for artists. Gharem Studio was founded in 2013 by Abdulnasser Gharem, whose name has now become synonymous to Saudi Contemporary Art, and his equally talented brother, Ajlan. Once inside the contrast to its exterior facade is jarring- at 42 DESTINATION SHARQIYA AUGUST 2018

your periphery, you’ll spot Ajlan Gharem’s Paradise Has Many Gates. The mosque-like cage is now used to cover the villa’s pool. On the other side, walls tagged with street art. The studio’s space inspires you to create-- from cork walls stabbed with numerous prototypes and sketches, a music studio, to a salon where artists huddled and locked in a pensive chatter. We realized that this was far more than a workspace, it’s a creative commune that thrives on being organic but at the same time being deliberate. As Abdulnasser Gharem said, “the most important thing is

to develop their careers as artists, they benefit from being in this space and from each other, to collaborate. This is the fundamental thing.” The studio acts as an incubator for artists, providing them with the time and resources they need to focus on their work.

“There are two phases to creating art. The research, by which I mean building the concept, it’s not easy. You need to develop the research, come up with a conclusion, develop it further and take input from other perspectives. The second step is execution; you can find someone who can execute it better than you. You need to find these people. Even in photography or editing. These two parts are so important. That’s why people come here (Gharem Studio) because it removes the pressure. You have the

resources, the knowledge from books, equipment, people to bounce off ideas from – mentors. Any commercial space, not just a gallery, if you produce a beautiful artwork, they will proceed by pressuring you to do shows, because they want you to sell. And its all fake. You need to be away from all this, so you can focus. And gradually build your career. Sometimes we have artists that come in here thinking they are good at drawing, but discover that they are good at filming. Some people plant this idea that you are good at one thing – people love to control people. On the other hand, stay here (Gharem Studio) and discover yourself. It’s like people are trying to inject others to grow as fast they can, and it’s destroying them.”

Gharem Studio also provides an internship program, taking

We need you to grow gradually, because we are looking for the DNA of the artwork that you want to produce. It should be something original, from you. Not just copying someone, which a lot of people do.” in students from all over the region. We asked Abdulnasser what their process is for selecting an artist to be part of an exhibition or the studio itself: “We follow them on social media, as a step. Then we invite them, or go to them. And we start to build a concept and a real relationship. With Ajlan we’ve had him for 9 years, Shahweesh for 6 years, Dafer for 4, and Nojoud for 3. It’s long-term. Not just showing a piece of art.We have a small space, so we need to be selective. Most of the year, we have 20 people working in the studio. We are artists, we DESTINATIONKSA.COM 43

need to produce. And in the end of the day we want to help but if the artist is not qualified, he will be confused. But you will know the talent. I saw Shaweesh’s work with Sara Attar on Twitter. I was in Venice at the time scrolling through twitter, and I called him immediately and told him he needed to join my show in 2012. So prepare yourself.” All of the Studio’s exhibitions have so far been abroad, last year Gharem studio did ten, well-received shows in the US funded by the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture. The program consisted of both shows and talks. We asked why they haven’t exhibited locally and what their role is in developing the Saudi art scene. “you know art has no place. 44 DESTINATION SHARQIYA AUGUST 2018

It’s a global thing. The whole platform, and tools. When you have the right content, a new concept, a new story, everyone will work with you. And that’s what I want to pass to the artists. And the other thing, I don’t think the country is ready yet to show these kinds of ideas. You know the whole art infrastructure is not ready. From shipping to insurance. What we are asking for is called the creative economy.” Abdulnasser Gharem and his creative minutemen are focused on developing their works day in and day out. They also plan to expand their art program and are contemplating opening an extension of their villa. When asked what’s next for them, Shaweesh, Gharem Studio’s creative director replied,

We are always ready with our work because you will never know when you’ll get a call for a show. And it helps that here we work on our art every day, whether it’s research or discussing it. We are looking for the cultural legacy. To make a mark. If you want to leave something. That will take time, and at Gharem, we take it. — Shaweesh

MOHSEN ALDAJANI From Fighter Pilot to Fine Arts Photographer After serving the Kingdom for 20 years as a Royal Saudi Airforce F-15 pilot, Mohsen Aldajani decided to trade in his wings and hunting rifle for a camera. After retiring three years ago, he ventured to capture the natural, often unseen beauty of Saudi Arabia as a photographer, even opening his own publishing house, Artrabia, along the way.

When and how did you discover your love for wildlife photography?

I have been raised as a true Arabian bedouin. My childhood was in the desert, between sand dunes, along sea coasts, and the vast Arabian prairies, if I can call them that. Among our activities those days was hunting, which is my favorite sport. When I joined the military, I had to leave the countryside. I found myself feeling caged in the big cities. One of my biggest challenges during my career as a pilot was being away from my old life. After couple of years, I used the extra time I had to escape to nature whenever I could. I was stationed in Taif then, so I began going to the mountains and valleys surrounding it. I couldn’t hunt since it had become illegal in order to conserve our wildlife. It gave me a chance to appreciate my environment in a different light. So, I decided that instead of coming back empty handed from these outdoor trips, why don't I take photos. I decided to master photography, and it’s been 15 years since.

50 DESTINATION SHARQIYA AUGUST 2018

Is there anything you've learned as a pilot that helped you become the amazing photographer you are today?

Flying an airplane needs knowledge of its systems and a great degree of skill. In my opinion, Photography needs the same. Photography involves understanding the capabilities of your equipment, but a good photographer also needs to present those images in an artistic way. Undertsanding the language of light (which is the most important element to be a successful photographer), and how to use it to your advantage to reveal the best of the image is something crucial. I plan my photo trips as if I am planning my flight; weather check in advance, proceed with clear goals or objectives, etc. Being a pilot involves a lot of reading about different systems, techniques, rules and regulations. Photography may seem to be a narrower field, but

it requires study as well. I read as much as I can from lenses and cameras, to composition, lighting. And with the rise of digital photography, a knowledge of photoshop and other imaging software is also important.

What inspires you? What subjects do you love taking photos of?

A camera replaced my rifle, and now, instead of destroying these fragile habitats, I’m protecting wildlife through my photography books.

Nature in general, from the close-up of beautiful wildflowers to the vast landscapes. Wildlife is also a favorite subject. I really enjoy photographing trees. I would spend days taking photos of mangroves, the opportunities there are endless. I hope to publish a coffee table book about Mangroves someday, and help protect them.

What projects are you working on? I had two solo exhibitions in the past, and I am planning one early next year in Riyadh.

Whether you go with the flow or sleeve it up, one thing you must have this summer is the Little White Dress. As versatile as its LBD counterpart, you can go from sunny day chic to night time chill with just a touch of accessories here and there. #ArabMoney has designers fighting for Khaleeji love.

It therefore makes sense that, with everything going on from a global economic perspective, brands, from high-street to high-end designer, are strategically eyeing the GCC market and our #ArabMoney! From the Oud fragrances of Gucci and the exaggerated Kuwait-esque turbans of Marc Jacobs, to Louis Vuitton’s Gahwa sets and Dolce’s love of Dubai, the Khaleej is definitely on the map as one of the most lucrative markets that designers are catering to.

A quick rundown of our relative GDPs and the promise of economic revival in the Middle East after an economic downturn

reveals all: Saudi Arabia has a GDP of US$ 22,650 per capita, the United Arab Emirates is at US$ 39,480, Qatar at US$ 66,200, and Kuwait at US$ 29,880. Mono brands aren’t the only ones jumping on the GCC bandwagon; major e-commerce retail giants like Yoox Net-a-Porter (YNAP) and Farfetch are coming on board as well. So what does this mean for the GCC? Monogrammed FF hijabs? Baccarat bakhoor burners? Guess we’ll have to wait for what the September runways have to show!

BOOST YOUR WELLNESS WITH @MIDDLEEATS_

TRIP TIPS TO PACK ALONG! Whether you’re taking a 16hour flight to Los Angeles or crossing the border to Bahrain, traveling is healthy for your body, mind, and soul - if you’re doing it right. Here are some tips to keep you on track while exploring all Earth has to offer:

68 DESTINATION SHARQIYA AUGUST 2018

STAFF PHOTO/MOHAMMED FAWZY

By Yasmeen Al Haj

1

PACK SNACKS.

Having nutritious snacks with you is just as important as packing your toothbrush! While you may just buy some from a supermarket upon arrival, this strategy saves you time. Depending on the length of your trip, you could bring precut vegetables or simply throw a few apples and bananas into your suitcase. Other options include nuts, dried fruit, rice cakes, nut butters, or protein bars. Snacking is important because it curbs hunger between meals, sustains your energy between activities (see the April article for more on that!).

2

EAT VEGETABLES WITH EVERY MEAL.

When it comes to eating out while you’re traveling, I highly recommend enjoying local delicacies - especially food you have never tried before. Food is the essence of traveling and you wouldn’t want to miss out on a local culture because you’re worried about how many calories are in your meals. Just make sure that you’re having either a fresh salad as a starter or vegetables on the side to get the extra nutrients and fiber.

3

CHOOSE WISELY.

At the same time, enjoying the food culture doesn’t mean you must eat deep fried food for EVERY meal - this is where practicing balance comes in. Do your best to choose grilled options over fried, or light sauces over heavy ones. You want to avoid feeling heavy for the rest of the day that’s no fun.

4

STAY ACTIVE.

5

KEEP A WATER BOTTLE WITH YOU.

6

ORGANIZE YOUR TIME.

7

DO WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD.

Explore the place you’re visiting by walking places, hiking, or even renting a bike. On the other hand, if you know you’ll be spending your day lounging by the beach or not doing much walking, make some time in the morning to get a workout in. It can be as simple as following a 30 minute YouTube video in your hotel room before jumping in the shower!

It’s easy to forget to drink water especially if you’re traveling to a cold place where you’ll barely be breaking a sweat. Hydrate once an hour even if it’s just a sip and even when you’re not thirsty!

While traveling is exciting and it’s fun to see everything a city has to offer, you should make time to relax and unwind. Make sure that your plan is not too overwhelming, so pick and choose what you want to do. Otherwise you’ll go home and think: “I need a post-vacation, vacation”.

Both physically and emotionally. Once you figure out what that is, start incorporating more of it into your daily routine, so you can really benefit from your vacation, long-term.

If you re-read this it’s actually just a basic guideline to staying healthy during your everyday life. If you find yourself binge eating on unhealthy food during your travels - then you’re probably being too restrictive in your regular day to day life. If you’re dreading being active or exercising - maybe your regular routine is too much and something needs to change. The key to building a healthy lifestyle that you’ll never feel like you need a vacation from, is practicing balance by consistently doing what makes you feel good. Whether you’re at home or globe-trotting, you’ll just be living. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 69
