DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2016

FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome to our social responsibility issue Sharqawis! With spring comes spring-cleaning. And we, my dear Sharqawis, need to clean up more than our dusty corners. We as a community need to collectively clean up our act. It is each of our social responsibility. This is the issue where we shed light on some of our community saviors. These fighters struggle on our behalf to either pave the way for us or help us carry unseen loads. Check out our special feature for a pan KSA solute to some do-gooders, from individuals to companies. It features people who have contributed significantly to each respective region in their own way. Our business section, however, is dedicated to Saudi pioneer and trailblazer Deema Al Yahya as she recounts her journey as a Saudi female first, from obstacles to victories. Living better is a community effort. We all need to pitch in and help propel each other forward. If there’s one thing we know about us Sharqawis, it’s that we stick together. Let’s show them how glue works, and band together. Three cheers to unity Sharqawis!

We decided to skip a big wedding and donate all the money to families living in Djibouti.

10 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APRIL 2017

Almost a year ago, a picture of a girl who had donated all her wedding money to people in need in Africa had went viral on social media and was broadcasted all over the news. Today, Buhaisa Al Arabi tells us how this was one of the most precious moments of her life.

to call it, in Djibouti, Africa. My husband and I decided to skip having a big wedding and donate all the wedding money to families living in a village in Djibouti. Later on, when we visited there, everyone was very welcoming and kind to us. We helped to develop the water system and water supply of the village and to rebuild some of the houses of those families.

YES, SHE CAN A historic event highlighting Saudi women. By Hajer Al Alwan

Thanks to the patronage of Princess Lamia bint Majed, CEO of Alwaleed Philanthropies, Saudi Arabia recently had its very first Saudi Women Conference at the King Abdulaziz Center for National Dialogue in Riyadh.

The conference held two panels: one about the evolving role of Saudi women in the business market and the challenges they face today, and the other about the role of Saudi women in the media.

Adwa Al Dahkeel continues to inspire crowds.

Under the theme of Saudi Women Can, the conference highlighted Saudi women’s achievements and growth through history in education and the job market. More importantly, the event hosted several Saudi women icons, from entrepreneurs to mountain climbers and inventors to journalists, which filled the space with an inspiring and compelling energy we all drew from and went back home feeling very empowered.

Speeches were given by the likes of Cherie Blair, lawyer and wife of the former prime minister in the UK; Joelle Tanguy, Director of the 12 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APRIL 2017

Strategic Partnership Division at the United Nations; and guest of honor Monique Villa, a journalist and CEO of the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Thomson Reuters Foundation and Alwaleed Philanthropies partnered and initiated the first women’s course on journalism in Saudi Arabia called Reporting Women, where a number of Saudi women journalists were selected to receive extensive advanced training on reporting strategies and tactics. The course encouraged them to take on the market of journalism on a larger and more in depth scale.

BE INDISPENSABLE Meet the first Saudi woman leader at Microsoft Arabia. By Areeb Al Shathri

Tech pioneer Deemah Alyahya is what we like to call an OG. She fell in love with computers before the Internet was even introduced to Saudi. For the millennials reading this, she fell in love with the bulky machine that only showed green letters against a black screen. Now that’s real love, my friends.

Deemah Alyahya

At 12-years old, Alyahya had a clear life goal: “I wanted to be Bill Gates, or at least work with him.” After graduating high school, although she had dreams of studying artificial intelligence, the reality of her situation necessitated scaling back to the only major she could find that was related to her interest: computer science.

Working at the bank ignited new interests in her, including an appreciation for Tadawul (Saudi Stock Exchange). When she applied for a position, she was turned away because they didn’t hire women. Undeterred, she kept applying until salvation came in the 14 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APRIL 2017

form of then King Abdullah’s decree to open up the doors for women in all industries. Still, even after applying again, she was rejected because they didn’t have the right facilities to accommodate women. Taking matters into her own hand, she crafted a strategy for their tech department and submitted it with her latest application. “This is what I can

do,” Alyahya explained. “I told them that even if they didn’t want to hire me, they’re free to use it.” Her persistence and vision earned her the position she wanted. After Tadawul, Alyahya went on to run the E-Services Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, securing yet another “first” trophy. The struggles and obstacles never

old girl finally had her wish of working with Bill Gates – though indirectly – come true. She began her journey with Microsoft as a Professional Development Resource Manager for about a year before earning her latest “first” trophy; being promoted to Executive Director of Developer Experience and Digital Innovation.

Alyahya chose the high road at every turn and fought for her right to be there, using her ideas and her work to speak for her. One fateful day, she received a phone call from Microsoft offering her a position. The 12-year

She was the first Saudi woman in a leadership role in Microsoft Arabia. Alyahya urges our readers that fighting for something shouldn’t be about conflict, but rather about proving your worth. Show – don’t tell – others how

valuable you are. She also urges women, especially those interested in the tech industry, to get ahead of the curve. Choose areas and fields where there is a shortage, build up your skills and leave them no option but to hire you. To encourage the efforts of women seeking a career in technology, Alyahya facilitated, through a partnership between Saudi Hollandi Bank (now Alawwal Bank) and Microsoft Arabia, the Women Spark initiative that helps teach tech-driven women the skills that are needed in the job market to make them indispensable. wavered, though. “I would call people and they’d hang up the moment they heard my voice,” she said. Alyahya was faced with skepticism at every turn and colleagues wouldn’t take her seriously because they would assume she was a quota hire. She often wasn’t allowed to attend meetings, and in some cases had to have a male escort present with her.

NAHDI’S NABDAT AMAL

The 5-year corporate social sustainability initiative is an energetic agent of change.

Nahdi, the leading Saudi pharmaceutical retailer, is well known for its socially responsible health initiatives. CEO Eng. Yasser Joharji, recently announced the launch of Nahdi’s 5-year Corporate Social Sustainability Strategy, known as the Nabdat Amal (Beat of Hope in Arabic).

Arabia’s Vision 2030. The CEO commented, “We aim to support the goals of the vision with our 5-year strategy. We want to empower people with knowledge and belief in both their capacity and ability to improve their quality of life, through effective health awareness programs.”

THE THREE MAIN PILLARS OF NAHDI’S CSR STRATEGY

NABDAT AMAL

Our Past The Health pillar creates substantial shift in patient knowledge and chronic disease management. “Ya Ana Ya Sukari” (I Challenge Diabetes) is a program that was launched in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and Joslin Diabetes Center, the largest in the world. NABDAT AMAL

Our Present The Wellness pillar promotes healthier lifestyles, improved nutrition and fitness to decrease obesity rates across the country. Programs include Wazin Hayatak (Balance Your Life) and the Billion Step Challenge, in cooperation with the General Presidency of Youth Welfare. NABDAT AMAL

Our Future The Mom and Babe pillar focuses on maternal and infant wellness and health. It bridges the knowledge gap of nurturing the child’s growing mind and body.

Nahdi’s community focus began years ago with the goal to enhance business performance and improve accessibility to medication. Nahdi’s influence has only grown over the years. The pharmaceutical giant’s Corporate Social Sustainability is a business approach that contributes to current and future generations, to create healthy and livable communities and to meet the triple bottom line, “People, planet and economic impact.” Sarah Turkistani, the head of health community service commented, ‘’Although our Corporate Social Sustainability Plan is structured with local population’s insights to address problems in the country, the challenges it seeks to tackle are not unique to Saudi Arabia. In fact, they are global priorities. The United Nation’s 2030

Agenda, commonly known as the Sustainable Development Goals, will drive action over the next 15 years in areas of critical importance to humanity and the planet. Of the 17 goals, Nabdat Amal is supporting efforts toward Goal 3, which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all ages.” Joharji comments, “Our work here is critical. The impact we aim to achieve will not come easy. By living our values and acting with purpose, we at Nahdi are creating meaning within our own story and changing the face of health and wellness across Saudi Arabia.” By 2020, Nahdi plans to transform health and wellness and touch the lives of 5 million people. CARRYING THE TORCH OF A LEGACY

18 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APRIL 2017

“We were almost like twins, but born 11 months apart,” said Hana’a Iskander, about her brother Hamza Iskander, who recently passed away at the age of 25.

Hamza’s Fight

I got the feeling that I was not like them. So I started helping families of cancer patients instead, because that was something I understood. — Hana’a Iskander

Cancer was not her brother’s first fight; Hamza, sick since he was a baby, had to get a prosthetic valve at age six. Despite having a difficult early life, he stayed positive and through a Facebook page called Heart Society, Hamza sought out other patients to lend them a listening ear and a supportive shoulder. Later, when he was diagnosed with cancer, he maintained his positivity. “He would find cancer patients and research their cancer before visiting them,” Hana’a recalled.

PHOTO/RAYAN NAWAWI

After he passed away, Hamza’s family received a call from an orphanage in Jeddah. It turned out he had been visiting the orphanage every two weeks, just to spend time with the children. Hana’a played an important role in his campaigns by organizing multiple projects and using her background in graphic design to create the logo. However, she maintains that she felt like an outsider during meetings with cancer patients. That changed when she found out she had stage four angiosarcoma. “Subhan Allah, I feel like Allah gave me cancer so I could continue Hamza’s work after he passed away, because I need to feel their pain.”

Current Projects

Now, Hana’a is working harder than ever to carry their projects forward. Perhaps the most important of which is her brother’s dream of a cancer support center. She explains, “It’s everything a hospital doesn’t have. It’s basically the fun part of being a cancer patient.” The main purpose will be to help families and patients transition from the initial shock of diagnosis, to acceptance. Hana’a adopted this as her graduation project so she could remain devoted to the cause while pursuing her degree in architecture. A project that’s nearing fruition is the cancer support room in Dar Al Hekma. “The university provided us with a room that we are furnishing with activities, like a PC and board games. It’ll be a very clean room because cancer patients have sensitive immune systems. A nurse will also be present.” Hana’a is working on many smaller campaigns, like Smile for Hamza and the Bandana Campaign, to raise money for her brother’s cancer support center. When Hana’a asked her brother, “How will I survive?” his reply summed up the sense of social responsibility we should all embody: “Embrace who you are and survive by helping other people. Don’t think about how you’re going to survive, help other people survive and you’ll forget about your worries.” hanaaisk

“Is there any place for us?” When Christine Boyd arrived in Dhahran six years ago, she asked this question to every family with a special learning needs child she met. Having three sons with autism, it was difficult for her family to cope without proper support facilities in the area. “No, we’re all on our own,” the families would tell her. Compelled to take action, the Boyds decided to start a support group to finally answer their own question in a positive way and call it “A Place 4 Us,” (AP4U). “The organization we founded is not just for children with autism, but for children with all types of special learning needs.” In December 2013, AP4U was recognized by Saudi Aramco as an official group, but could only serve families within the Aramco camps.

After founding the organization and running it for two years, Brett left it in the good hands of Dr. Karen Rigamonti, the current president of AP4U. 20 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APRIL 2017

COURTESY PHOTO

“Now, AP4U has a monthly event at a park in Dhahran Hills where there are games and fun activities for the children with the help of volunteers,” said Brett Boyd. “It gives the parents an opportunity to relax and enjoy the park while their children have fun.”

Dr. Rigamonti is a mother of three children, one of whom is intellectually delayed, has a visual impairment and is autistic. She is very passionate about the cause and has done a lot of philanthropy and worked on many school and community boards. She holds MSc degrees in public health and business, and does a lot of leadership development, facilitation and coaching for caregivers of people with disabilities or chronic health problems.

I don’t think anyone is disabled, as much as they are dis-abled; they are not as able as someone else, but we all have our abilities and weaknesses — Dr. Karen Rigamonti

“I always find myself working with special needs groups to better their abilities to comingle in society, and I strongly believe that every individual is unique, including my son,” said Dr. Rigamonti. “Although he cannot read and write, has a delayed response, and does not necessarily have meaningful conversations, he still has many strengths and can teach people a lot about life.”

STAFF PHOTO/HAJER AL ALWAN

“We’re working with other self-directed groups here to get the children involved with the community, because my dream is for everyone to feel included regardless of race, religion, education or even ability,” said Dr. Rigamonti. The support group has monthly lunch meetings where parents meet with special guest speakers. AP4U speeches have been both live and on Skype, and speakers include Harvard Medical School professors and doctors, as well as local specialists and physicians. The presentations are usually followed by Q&A sessions and discussions. Email: krigamonti@gmail.com

By Rawan Nasser

How did you begin your volunteering journey?

It all started with one of my university professors, Dr. Izdihar Al Hariri, who worked at the Saudi Reading Society. She was looking for volunteers to share in the organization’s mission to encourage children to read and learn from a young age. It was my first experience and I loved it. After that, I started signing up for events with Ithar for organ donation, breast cancer awareness, Ithra programs, Giving Hands and many others.

What are the causes or events that draw you in the most?

I never pass up volunteering opportunities that promote early cancer detection and cancer awareness.

We heard your volunteering specialty is face-painting. Why’s that? When I draw a butterfly or a Spiderman mask on a child’s face and see their little smiles, all my stress from the day melts away and I’m able to

22 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APRIL 2017

enjoy the moment with them. It’s such a simple activity but it means the world to them.

How do you manage your time?

I set my goals for the week and schedule social activities around them. Balance is key so I always set one day to rest and I make sure that I’m spending enough time with friends and family during the weekend. Once you establish a system for yourself, it makes it easier for people to understand and even support your efforts.

I lost someone dear to me because of cancer and through the work I feel that I am both honoring their memory and helping to educate people about the importance of early detection. — Nouf Al Blushi

What are some challenges that you faced? When I first started, my parents didn’t like that I was working for long hours without pay. “What are you getting out of this?” they would ask. But, in time, they came to see that it was important to me and that it was my way of giving back to the community.

What advice would you give people who want to start volunteering?

If you volunteer, do it with the purpose of making people happy, spreading the word on an important cause, or improving the conditions in your community. As exhausted as you may feel during the experience, it will reward you with the satisfaction of having done something useful with your day. NoufAlrashid

STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA ALDAWOOD

When Nouf Al Blushi began volunteering in 2013, she did not expect it to transform her life. Today, she is a regular participant at annual awareness campaigns and charity events. Even with a full-time job with Saudi Aramco’s media productions team, she still finds the time to volunteer with different organizations.

It was amazing how an increasing amount of people were as excited as I was and got involved for the purpose of doing a good deed. — Turki Al Romaih

By Hajer Al Alwan

Turki Al Romaih is an artist and muralist with a fresh style that’s unique to Sharqiya; a business student with a savvy mind for opportunities; and the founder of Takween, a charitable initiative that began last Ramadan and is taking off in big ways. “I never knew it would get this big,” said Al Romaih. “Thanks to everyone who got involved, we were able to raise SR 32,000 and paid the debts of three imprisoned Saudi men who were able to spend Eid Al Fitr with their families.”

How did it all start?

Last Ramadan, an idea nestled deep into Al Romaih’s mind and would not release him until he accomplished it. The idea was to create a way of giving a helping hand to others that was out of the box. He wanted to sell art and use the profits to help poor families in the region during the holy month. First, he started contacting charitable organizations and associations. “I wanted to know where every halala went,” said Al Romaih. “It was important to me and this filtered out many organizations that I approached. I wanted to be able to use the profits 100

Down Syndrome Charity Association (DSCA) celebrates its 15th official birthday this year, and we believe they deserve 15 years worth of standing ovations for what they've done. DSCA began as a push from parents and interested parties to supplement the growing need for specialized centers. They became fully operational after a four-year trial run. Their aim is to develop and provide training, information and support to families of children with Down Syndrome. To get there, DSCA provides early intervention classes, classes to prep for educational initiation, domestic training, individual sessions and a training program to prepare early childhood teachers. Basically, they teach parents how best to approach their children, as well as empower children with Down Syndrome to be a part of society and help them create meaningful and special encounters.

If you cannot sponsor someone, show your support by donating money or toys (check the list of appropriate toys on their website) or by volunteering your time to the charity association. Web: dsca.org.sa 26 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APRIL 2017

I N C O N V E R S AT I O N W I T H PRINCESS NAJLA BINT AHMAD Atharna preserves traditional crafts and cultural heritage. By Sumaiyya Naseem

Princess Najla, an academic at heart, pursued a degree in Anthropology at Durham University. She then worked at the National Museum in Riyadh, and completed an internship at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. It was 28 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APRIL 2017

at UNESCO that she saw the importance of international organizations working to preserve cultural heritage. However, she felt that she could add the most value on a smaller scale where her background in anthropology and local cultural knowledge would allow her to create the most impact. Later, while working at Turquoise Mountain, a charity founded by Prince Charles, Princess Najla discovered how the culture of postwar Afghanistan was being rebuilt by the preservation

of its crafts and artisans. She said, “Turquoise Mountain has done an incredible job of training and aiding artisans in Afghanistan, and now they are working closely with the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities to research on the crafts industry in Saudi.” The quality of these artisanal pieces are clear; they have even been commissioned by hotels such as The Connaught in London. However, the prestige aspect is not what Princess Najla finds important. She recalls, “As long as the crafts are being sold, used and continuously needed, we have done our job well.” DESTINATIONKSA.COM

Many people buy traditional looking products. While it’s great that people are taking an interest in their heritage, a true impact is made when we also support the local, traditional artisans. It’s not just about the end result of how something looks in your home, but about the people, the story and the historical skill set that went into the creation of it. — Princess Najla bint Ahmad

Atharna was born when Princess Najla realized the need for someone to connect Middle Eastern crafts with a wider audience. With this in mind, she began working with local artisans operating on two levels: independently and in affiliation with organizations like the Jordan River Foundation and Art of Heritage. When working directly with artisans, Princess Najla visits them, builds a 30 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APRIL 2017

relationship with them and ensures that their craft is both local and functional. She believes it’s important to work directly with them. “Personal conversations with the artisans enable us to understand and communicate to the world the authenticity of the crafts and the history behind them.”

as poor artisans you need to feel bad for and help to survive. We showcase them for who they are; artists and fair trade businesspeople, who have created a livelihood for themselves with their hands. These traditional skills they have are incredible. It’s something I wish I could do.”

Princess Najla speaks very passionately when she says, “We’re not showcasing them

with craftswomen I ask them if they have taught their skill to their daughters, and the answer is usually no.” Princess Najla explains that the younger generation doesn’t see a sustainable future in the traditional crafts trade. Without projects like Atharna, the preservation of our cultural heritage would be at risk.

“You get to know the stories behind the crafts and how they came to be. The artisans give you the narrative behind it, and it’s more important because it makes you realize that if you don’t support their work, you don’t believe in the story behind it.”

To protect this cultural narrative, the Princess collaborated with Brown Book Magazine, an organization that shares the beliefs, ideas and future that she sees for Atharna. “We created an online journal where we explore Middle Eastern culture, either by looking at it directly or by using the crafts as a lens.” She maintains that this journal is more important than the online store that is launching soon. “If people don’t learn about the culture and care about it, they won’t invest in the product.”

It’s essential to acknowledge the steady disappearance of traditional crafts. She comments, “When I work

Atharna’s online store will make Middle Eastern crafts more accessible to all. Princess Najla, who is currently pursuing her Masters degree at Cambridge, says her dream is to one day be able to sit in a room and say, “Everything here is made by artisans and supported by Atharna.”

SPOTLIGHT: Short Saudi Film Newly produced “Tongue,” screened at the Saudi Film Festival. By Rawan Nasser

We sat down with the film’s young director, Mohammed Al Salman, to learn more about the process of creating a film and what this creative outlet means to him. As a 26 year-old graduate of KFUPM and Colorado School of Mines, Al Salman has shifted his career from electrical engineering to the risky business of making films, a passion that grew with him from a young age.

Director Mohammed Al Salman

Where did your journey start with filmmaking and what was the first film you worked on?

What can you tell us about your second film? The story of “Tongue” revolves around a simple farmer who is battling a number of issues and 32 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APRIL 2017

finds himself being led down a path that puts him face to face with his darkest fears. The film was shot over a period of five days and we focused predominantly on the visuals and presenting a new, authentic experience for the viewers.

Where did the idea for the film come from? I was visiting a farm in Al Ahsa and the beauty of the area captured my imagination. I knew I wanted to film something there. I had been interested in cults at the time, the anthropology of magic to be more precise. The history of magic in different cultures fascinated me and I decided to explore this topic through film.

What was the significance of the location in the film?

Isn’t magic a controversial topic to delve into?

We wanted to capture a certain time in our history, when life was simple and people were not as distracted as they are today. We shot many scenes outdoors because there were lots of captivating elements: a randomness that only nature is able to produce.

We are presenting it as a dark comedy. Besides, this is a topic that we often discuss in society. In any family gathering you will find people reciting stories about scary incidents that they swear happened, while others think is nonsense. The purpose of the film is to reflect a piece of our culture, to pose a question and let the audience answer it for themselves.

Hussain Alyahya plays the main character Khalil, who is shown here in one scene in the film.

I was fortunate to have a passionate and hardworking crew. Without their creativity and hard work this film would have never seen the light of day. — Mohammed Al Salman

In “Eyes Like Mine”, the author wrote Nora Watts as a complex indigenous woman with a dark past. The story follows Watts as she finds out the daughter she gave up for adoption 15 years ago has gone missing. Watts feels torn between not wanting to get involved and knowing that she may be the only one who can find her. Watts takes up the investigation and her past is unraveled in the process. “Eyes Like Mine” proved to be an intense study of Watts’ dark character, to the extent that the missing girl’s storyline becomes secondary. Nora Watts is a leading female character that is “nobody’s sidekick”, as Kamal pointed out in an article. The novel’s strength also lies in its uncovering of the social issues surrounding indigenous women in Canada, a topic we almost never see in crime fiction.

MODESTY GOES MAINSTREAM Designers from Saudi Arabia showcase at London Modest Fashion Week.

We’ve wanted to enter the market in western countries and this is the first step to going globally. Sara Rayess

By Caroline Hillier

It’s not common that models walk down runways in the UK wearing hijabs. But that’s exactly what happened at the first ever London Modest Fashion Week (LMFW) in February. The event is proof there’s a modest fashion revolution underway that’s not only taking the Middle East by storm, but the western world too. Two labels based in KSA – Foulard and the Art of Heritage – showcased their beautiful work at LMFW.

FOUL ARD As models dressed in Sara Rayess’ designs stepped onto the runway, her heart raced from a mix of excitement and nervousness. But at the end of the show, when she emerged from backstage to walk down the runway herself, feelings of pride took over.

As a teenager, Rayess strolled through malls and browsed online to find fashionable scarves to match her outfits but she wasn’t happy with the options available and started to design her own scarves. 42 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APRIL 2017

Veil Validation

In 2011, Rayess, who is Syrian-German and was born and raised in Jeddah, founded and established Foulard (which means scarf in French). Her scarf collection represents more than fashion and beauty. She weaves in her identity and religion into each piece of fabric.

“Representing my religion in a good way has always been my aim. I’ve always wanted to encourage girls to get into hijab and dress in a good way to represent their religion,” said Rayess. Noting that ‘modest fashion’ is less about style and more about a lifestyle, Rayess balances fashion with religion. “I want to redefine the meaning of ‘veiled women’ since some think that a veiled woman has to dress ugly rather than stylish, so I want to change this idea. Even if you wear a scarf, you can be very trendy and even go crazy with your fashion and style!”

Midnight Collection At LMFW, Foulard showcased its haute couture scarves. Inspired by the texture and movement of flies, the highend scarves are for special occasions like weddings. Foulard’s collection is available online and is also in a retail store in Chelsea, England. With many existing customers in the United Kingdom, Rayess’ plan is to eventually expand even to North America. While scarves have been her main passion, she plans to branch out and start designing and selling her own clothes. Stay tuned! Web: foulardstore.com Foulard_f

BE A GOOD HOST A three-step solution to entertaining.

There is nothing worse than arriving late to a party and finding nowhere to sit. It automatically makes your guests want to hurry out. It’s always better to have too much seating, allowing people to spread out, as opposed to too little seating and forcing people to squeeze or stand. I highly recommend a mismatched look to your seating. This will make your pieces more versatile, and it means you can use them again in different configurations. And don’t be afraid to go bold with seating types either.

What defines a space of entertainment is its ability to invite people in and make them feel welcomed. The best way to do that is to make sure everything they need is available.

ORGANIC IS THE NEW BLACK Quick look at local Rayana Organic Farm. By Lina Al Faris

58 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APRIL 2017

Rayana Organic Farm is the Balghunaim family farm in Al Ahsa. Fahad Balghunaim has been working for years to build his own farm. Always environmentally conscious, he even decided to go organic. With the help of his daughter Amal and after two years of work, Rayana Organic Farm was certified by The Saudi Organic Farming Association and has acquired Kiwa BCS Organic Certification for 10 years.

You can buy some of their products online through Khodarji.com (only in Riyadh for now) or the W99l app, or you can contact them directly by phone or email. They offer home delivery in Riyadh, Al Ahsa, Qatif, Khobar and Dammam and they ship to all regions in the Kingdom. “I see it in my daughter,” said Amal Balghunaim. “When we get up in the morning, she picks her eggs and we cook it together for breakfast. Knowing that she is the one who got the eggs, she’ll grow up with respect about where food comes from. She’ll appreciate the story, the environment and what it has to offer for us. When you care for something, it gives back.”

Today, Rayana Farm is a well-developed organic farm, producing a variety of grains, vegetables, herbal plants and dates. Still, it’s very challenging maintaining a regular farm, let alone an organic one. There’s a lot more planning involved with organic farming, and simple tasks have to be done more carefully, such as manually removing weeds. Also, while conventional farmers use pesticides and toxic chemicals to fight insects and viruses, an organic farmer would use plant-derived products to fight such problems.

The Balghunaims are very committed to organic farming and to supply the community with clean and healthy products which makes them very conscious about the methods they use. One of Rayana’s philosophies is having a relationship with their customers and community, educating them on what organic food is all about. They encourage people to come and see the farm in action, including the harvesting, the animals and all the labor involved. DESTINATIONKSA.COM

12 MONTHS to a Healthier You Add or remove a habit every month. By Mai Kholief

TOPIC OF THE MONTH:

Shake That Salt Habit

60 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APRIL 2017

As part of the “12 Months to a Healthier You” campaign, April is all about eliminating salt from your diet.

be sharing some tips on how to avoid exceeding your maximum daily intake unknowingly.

It shouldn’t be news to anyone that a high sodium diet raises blood pressure, which in turn may lead to numerous health issues. No need to worry! I’m not just here to highlight some of the effects of sodium over-consumption, but I will

According to the American Heart Association, an adult’s ‘ideal’ daily sodium intake should not exceed 1,500 mg. To put that into perspective, 1,500 mg of sodium is less than ¾ of a teaspoon. We are not just talking about salt from a salt shaker, the ideal daily intake also covers the salt that’s already

DID YOU KNOW

in many of the foods we eat. Not only do manufacturers add salt to packaged foods to enhance taste and flavor, but also do so to prolong shelf-life. This makes economical sense, and could be the reason why packaged foods are usually less expensive, but unfortunately our health ends up bearing the cost. Let’s use this month to begin taking control of how much salt we include in our diet. I have to be honest, it won’t be easy. Research tells us that salt intake releases dopamine, which leads to an endless

spiral of craving more and more salt-ridden foods, which ultimately leads to thirst. Feeling thirsty wouldn’t be a problem, if we always turned to water. This isn’t the case. Guess what? Diet sodas are also full of sodium! Supermarket Tips: The first thing to do when buying any packaged item? Read the label. When buying nuts? Go for unsalted. Looking for a snack? Grab some fruit or vegetables. Try substituting with different spices such as cumin, black pepper, oregano and cinnamon to enhance flavors.

When we make a conscious effort to quantify how much sodium we consume, and ensure it does not surpass the ideal daily intake, we should immediately experience positive effects. The positive effects include feeling slimmer, and less bloated as less sodium means less water retention. Gradually, your taste buds will begin to appreciate the natural flavor of foods, without the need for added salt. And, before you know it, the only time you’ll reach out to grab some salt, it’ll be for that relaxing day at the spa.

NEIGH-BORHOOD ANIMAL Arabian horses rewriting world history. By Eman Bukhari

The Arabian Peninsula is known for its beautiful Arabian horse breed, and a discovery in 2010 deepened the relationship between the region and horses. An archeological site belonging to the Al Maqar civilization was discovered, with pieces that reflect the culture and lifestyle of the people who inhabited the land around 9,000 BC. The most valuable piece is a model of a horse’s head that rewrote history.

Legends and poems have been passed down for centuries celebrating the beauty of horses and talents of riders. Today, it might seem like modern cities left no room for interacting with these magnificent creatures. However, such a deep rooted cultural practice cannot be removed so easily. Within Sharqiya’s cities and among its fast highways are stables that offer lessons and training from basic riding to show jumping and dressage.

64 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APRIL 2017

SOURCE PHOTO/ ARCHIVE.ARAMCOWORLD.COM

Before its discovery, it was believed that the domestication of horses first took place in Asia around 4,000 BC. The rein carvings on the head told archeologists that the domestication of horses began at least 4,000 years earlier than previously thought, right here in the Arabian Peninsula.

Horse riding is not just a deep rooted cultural sport; its benefits on health and wellbeing are tremendous. With such benefits, we might soon find th e sport back in the mainstream in the region.

It has a positive impact on your posture, core, back and abdominal muscles. It’s an isometric exercise, where you use certain muscles to stay in the same position. It is also a mental exercise as much as a physical one, as you coordinate, balance and align yourself with the horse’s movement. Through this, you learn about yourself, and your confidence grows as you form a relationship with the animal, making it a beneficial sport for youth and child development.

Horse riding can be its own form of therapy, known as Equine-Assisted Therapy (EAT), where it’s used to help individuals with ADD, anxiety, autism, dementia, depression, trauma, behavior issues and other mental health issues. The reason for the horse’s positive impact on human emotions and development is that they reflect human emotions and respond to them.

SPIRITUALITY

Wait, O Aishah, for Allah loves kindness in all things. By Zahra Anwer

66 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APRIL 2017

These were the words spoken by the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) to console his wife, Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) when she got angry at a group of people who had said to him: “Assaamu alaikum” (death be upon you).

The mercy, kindness and gentleness of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) was the reason why people entered Islam. If it wasn’t for these, he would have put off the people around him, and they would have never taken interest in his message.

HOW TO BE A DECENT HUMAN BEING ONLINE

Here are some things to remember when we’re online:

1. ALWAYS SPEAK (OR TYPE) ON THE SIDE OF KINDNESS

We have hundreds of friends online, the diversity means varying opinions and posts that we won’t always agree with. While social media encourages us to engage, always keep in mind that “how” we comment is half of the message. So choose your words wisely and always side with empathy. The Prophet (PBUH) said: “and (saying) a good word is also a charity.” [Al Bukhari and Muslim]

2. COUNTING PEOPLE’S SINS DOESN’T MAKE YOU A SAINT Never rebuke others, list their mistakes publicly and go as far as calling people names like kaafir. Determining whether someone is a kaafir or a faasiq is not up to you. It’s

up to Allah and His Messenger (PBUH). Having a bitter tone and behavior only pushes people away from the message. Most importantly, we have no right to judge others.

3. TROLLING TROLLS MAKES YOU A TROLL

The issue sometimes is we don’t have a fundamental education in our own religion. We don’t always know that our deen makes us civil, makes us decent, makes us patient, makes us patient and not reactionary. It gives us control over our emotions and prevents us from becoming behind-the-scene critics that are more concerned with commenting than constructing. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “A true believer is not involved in taunting, or frequently cursing (others) or in indecency or abusing.” [Tirmidhi]

AS MUSLIMS, NEVER LET DISAGREEMENTS TAINT YOUR CHARACTER. It is encouraged to serve the deen, be involved in dawah, help others people through Islamic values, but for that you need to learn the basics. The solution is relatively simple: Unplug every once in a while, get involved in your communities, help and serve your people in real life.

Things to Experience in

ABHA

The 2017 Arab Capital of Tourism By Mohammed Mirza

1

See the Landscape from the Tallest Peak of the Country Reaching a whopping height of 9,843 feet, Jabal Souda is widely believed to be the tallest peak in the Kingdom. Once atop this peak, you’ll forget for a moment that you’re in Saudi Arabia. Rugged yet beautiful mountains pervade the backdrop, misty clouds comb the hills and snaking roads pass through the precarious mountainscape. 74 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APRIL 2017

Feed the Hamadryas Baboon These baboons are native to the region. They dwell in the mountain ranges and can be found in hordes on the outskirts of Abha. Feeding these baboons is a popular pastime for tourists. These mammals eat almost all types of food that is given to them. You can even give them a closed water bottle and see how they open it and drink it or watch how they open a packet of biscuits and enjoy its sugary coating.

3 Understand Asiri Architecture In and around Abha, every now and then one will come across pockets of age-old houses, some of which are over 300 years old. These houses used indigenous construction techniques as per the raw materials available at their disposal. Today, some of these houses have been renovated to allow for modern amenities like air conditioning systems and electrical cables to be installed, which makes for an interesting sight of how the past is integrated with the present.

4 Eat Fresh Produce From the Farms

There are also dedicated markets in the city that sell produce sourced from these farms.

Abha’s farms are unique. While much of Saudi Arabia is known for its drip irrigated farms, in Abha crops are grown on terraced farms. As Abha receives a decent amount of rainfall, the farmers capitalized on this particular farming technique that allows them to fight surface runoffs and retain water at the same time. The farms, however, end up looking like a series of steps. Eating the fresh local produce from them should definitely be on a bucket list for all visiting Abha.

5 Dine by the Clouds at the Green Mountain It’s more like a hill rather than a mountain that sits right in the core of the city. There is a restaurant on top of the hill that offers breathtaking views and is at times surrounded by fog. It is one of those places where the location presides over the food. At night, the hill is lit by a green light, hence the name ‘Green Mountain’.

6

Clinging to a cliff face, this village is found in one of the last places where one would expect to find habitation. It is commonly believed that a location like this was used to settle so as hide from the invading armies of the Ottomans. Hide it did and did it well, remaining a mystery for a long time. Today, the only means to access the isolated abode is via a cable car that plunges 300 meters downwards to the base of the village. 76 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APRIL 2017

7 Go Souvenir Shopping at Abha’s Traditional Souks Traditional markets are still a crucial part of daily life in Abha. Be prepared for some interesting finds in these souks. From culturally inspired paraphernalia

to Asir’s prized honey, the souk alleys hold many secrets. For tourists, the favored souk is the Tuesday Market or Souk Al Thulatha as it’s referred to locally. Every Tuesday, traders gather here and sell most things that Abha is famous for.

If the Kingdom were to have its own 7 wonders list, this village will definitely be on it. Nestled deep in the Asir Mountains some 57 kilometers from Abha, Rijal Alma evokes the feel of it being stuck in time as a good portion of the heritage village is in much the same condition as it once was. Walking around Rijal Alma feels like going back in time, with only small details like cars that remind you of the time. The village is accessible from the cable car that extends from the Souda National Park complex or one can take the snaking road down the cliff side from Jabal Souda. DESERT CAMEL POWER

By Sumaiyya Naseem

We have great news for offroading enthusiasts: Nissan Middle East has discovered the Desert Camel Power. It’s a radical new concept that will eventually bring much advancement to understanding off-road performance. For a start, the concept developed by Nissan will revolutionize the way vehicles are evaluated for desert performance, using a scientifically proven formula.

There have been endless discussions about inherent off-road capabilities of SUVs in the Gulf, the Desert Camel Power brings clarity to the table. Just like horsepower can be calculated scientifically, so can Desert Camel Power. This raises the prospects of an at-aglance indication of whether the vehicle is fit for the desert. Want a car that can perform off-road? Just check the Desert Camel Power. The engineers also worked with scientists in the field of metrology to find ways to measure Desert Camel Power.

IN BAHRAIN

HIDDEN SIDE OF BAHRAIN Check out the island’s surprising spots. By Ahmed Almulla

There are many hidden gems in Bahrain that I love exploring and sharing with others. Not your typical fare, but rather out of the way spots that each offer their own unique experience.

FARM LIFE I began my exploration with this beautiful farm that’s located just behind Bahrain Fort in Karbabad, growing everything from cabbages and potatoes to onions and more. The farm is publicly accessible with no entry fees and you can witness firsthand the hard work that farmers endure to harvest the land. You can also get some fresh vegetables and fruits from one of the booths located in front of the farm.

STAFF PHOTO/AHMED ALMULLA

Sunsets are especially magical and you can use the opportunity to even do some horse-riding if you want.

Opposite the farm is a seaside village called Karrana with a spectacular view of the whole city of Manama. Don’t pass up some of the local street food, including the highly recommended harees.

FOREST FUN

On another day, I explored the Ras Sanad Mangrove Forest. Although the site is in dire need for more attention, it was an excellent place to experience some solitude and serenity. The site is accessible to the public and there are no marked signs but you can easily find the location on the map. Once there, you’ll marvel at the giant mangroves that run across a small water spring in the middle of nowhere. Up ahead in the distance, there is an old mosque and a few farms that make this place a perfect spot to enjoy a peaceful sunset.

BAYS AND LAGOONS

Finally, I want to share with you the wonders of Bahrain’s natural reserves. First up, there’s Tubli Bay. Here you can appreciate the beauty of the sea and enjoy some very underrated birdwatching. Seagulls, flamingos and so much more to watch and pass the time in nature. Another excellent natural reserve is Dohat Arad Lagoon and it is open to public for free at all times. Here you can enjoy a lovely time with the family or get some exercise in by walking their rounded 3-km pathways.

Bahrain is such a beautiful place to be, and exploring these hidden gems has its own rewards. For me, it was the solitude and the sense of appreciation to the surrounding environment. This experience is invaluable and I recommend all readers to try it!

As human species, we possess the determination to continue our journey in life and achieve a
