FROM THE EDITOR

When Fashion Takes Over With the region taking a large leap into the fashion world in recent years and with the rising stars of many Saudi designers on board, we have gone from keeping up with the latest trends to creating them. For this year’s fashion issue, we decided to focus on individuals who are already breaking the freshly made mold and marking the international scene with their talent. Fashion is in an expression of self… The choices we make on the outside don’t define who we are, but they do reflect it, and so do our living spaces. A piece of accent furniture, colors and motifs can tell you a lot of about the person who chose them. Just like the jewelry we chose to wear. Enjoy the editorial we did featuring trending jewelry and get inspired. We’ve also tackled trends that are here to stay, including colorful abayas. Break the mold in your own little way by switching over to a brighter abaya. If you want to get your head in the style game, check out our special feature about the evolution of Sharqawi fashion. We leave this heavily fashion featured issue in your hands Sharqawis. And as with the end of every Project Runway episode, we would just like to say: Auf Wiedersehen Sharqiya.

FOR THE SEASON

Saving a bit here and there can make a huge difference. By Amr Banaja, SEDCO

12 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2016

1.The Goal: Why Am I Saving? Think of it this way: What are you not able to achieve because you haven't set a goal? What fun or opportunities are you prevented from pursuing because of the lack of a savings plan?

2. Forget About Daily Visits to Coffee Shops

We just love stopping by Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts and the like. Plan your week and try to limit your visits to once a week if not once every two weeks. Brew your own coffee at home.

SAVING TIPS

3. Get Your Own Food

It’s fun to go grab a quick lunch from restaurants with friends, but it’s not so much fun for your pocket. Homemade food is healthier and better on your wallet.

4. Sign Up For a Reduced Internet Plan

Get yourself an Internet plan that won’t burn your pocket at the end of the month, use Wi-Fi and try using free calling services more often.

5. Shop For Necessities ONLY

If you don’t need shoes now, don’t get any! Shops have a sale every once in a while; wait until then and get whatever you want at a lower price. Don’t get peer pressured and follow the hype.

6. Stay Away From Your Friend’s Lifestyle

Just because your friends are always going out for sushi or shopping doesn’t mean you have to do the same. You can join them without spending much money.

7. Consider a Part Time Job

This will not only ensure you have some money saved on the side but it will also provide you with some valuable experience in the work life.

8. Look For Bargains

Whenever a new phone comes out, the older version gets a major price cut. Apple fans, the iPhone 7 is coming out soon, why not look at the iPhone 6s?

9. Use Your Credit Card Sparingly

It's easy to spend with plastic and much harder to pay later. Use credit responsibly or you’ll be paying later.

10. You Don’t Need a Car

Car maintenance and gas bills on the rise? Try carpooling with a friend. Enjoy the company of friends during the journey.

BUSINESS

Did you always want to be involved in the fashion industry?

My first experience was as my mother’s (a tailor by trade) sewing assistant during my teenage years in France, assisting her every day after class until the economic crisis forced her to close in 2009. But, fate has a funny way of working things out and now she’s my sewing assistant. I owe my success to her for everything she taught me and for giving me this passion for fashion. When I was 14, I was actually able to make my own wardrobe. Schoolmates would compliment me and ask where I bought my dresses. That’s when I knew I needed to become a fashion designer.

Passion for Fashion Sakina Shbib brings her French and Saudi influence to the fashion world.

14 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2016

I’m French by birth and Saudi by marriage. What I like about French culture is the minimalistic elegance; there is something so natural about being beautiful in Paris. Meanwhile, what I admire about the Saudi culture is the sophistication of women and their sense of luxury. My style is the mixture of these two concepts and my goal is to highlight the beauty of women according to their own traditions.

COURTESY PHOTO

How have your cultural backgrounds affected your work?

Tell us about your current collections.

My second collection is a presentation of designs with pure lines, volumes and delicate details handcrafted on high-quality fabrics such as Dentelle de Calais, silk organza, silk satin, silk crepe and silk taffetas. The epitome of luxury is to embellish a fabric.

What is the most important element in clothing design?

The shape and structure are fundamental; they bring harmony to your body. Beauty comes in all shapes, but knowing the right proportions is essential to designing a beautiful gown.

I’m a hopeless romantic, so for my second Haute Couture collection I dove into the world of French writer Marcel Proust, portraying women in a state of seduction and living the first experiments of infatuation, just like his characters in “A l’Ombre des Jeunes Filles en Fleurs.” In this collection, flowers are omnipresent and allegorical: they stand for the fragility and delicacy of all young women in love.

What are you working on for the future? I plan on designing luxury abayas in November. I’m also negotiating with stores in New York to be my official distributor in the United States and I would really like to open a showroom in Jeddah by the end of 2017 as well.

I’m working on my third Haute Couture collection that I will present in January during the next Paris Fashion Week.

LOOK BOOK

What is your design process like?

The most demanding part of designing a couture collection is synchronizing all the processes of production: from the sketching and studio research to the draping and pattern-making, including the sewing, hand-made details, finishing and fittings, all within three months of completion. Private clients entail a mood board with sketches creating a “toile.” Often, one dress takes up to two months. For ready-to-wear, I compromise between the design and details in order to make it more affordable while still keeping the same quality.

16 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2016

It’s still manufactured in my Parisian atelier, but the quick production enables me to reach more customers.

What advice do you have for entrepreneurs and fashion designers?

I believe talent is fundamental for building a strong name, but having a sense of business is equally significant. Success comes when you find this balance between hard work, determination, passion, creativity and networking. It wasn’t school but rather my work experiences at Alexandre Vauthier, Givenchy and Chanel ateliers that gave me the basics on networking and building a strong team.

Your inspiration?

Inspiration is everywhere and timeless elegance is at the heart of my aesthetics, aiming for beauty rather than trend.

Your personal favorite fashion designers?

I have tremendous respect for the work of Yves Saint Laurent. His purpose was perfection and genuine couturier creating exquisite standards of beauty. I also admire the talented designer Elie Saab. His work has produced great inspiration by shedding light on designers from the Middle East. Web: SakinaParis.com (Haute Couture) / SKSParis.com (luxury ready-to-wear) sakinaparis

FASHIONABLE

The evolution of Sharqiya’s unique traditional clothing. By Eman Bukhari

Just as you’re about to step out of the house, all dressed up and ready to go, you hear your grandmother ask, “Is that supposed to be a dress or a abaya?” You laugh, but she’s serious. The looks today’s generation gets from the older generations on what they wear and how they wear it are not looks of disapproval, but that of surprise, and it is important to remember that once upon a time they too were making the fashion statements. The stories around the origins of local garments today are varied, but what we are certain of is the ongoing evolution of Sharqiya’s fashion over the centuries, thanks to its geographic position along major trade routes. With their goods and services, merchants, traders and travelers had also brought their sense of style with them to the region. Some of the different fabrics and designs we see today were imported into eastern

22 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2016

This is also evident in the increasing fashion similarities Sharqiya has with its neighboring Gulf countries than with other parts of the Kingdom, such as the wizar for men, bouknog (black silk see-through chiffon, with gold and silver threading around the edges) for young girls, the designs of a nashel (a loose-fitting dress known for its colorful material) and, of course, the black abaya. Colored abayas are mainstream today in Jeddah, while in Sharqiya the preference is still for black. This local preference has pushed local abaya designers to be more creative with one color, with customized black abayas emerging for different occasions and needs, such as weddings, sports, work or going to the mall. Arabia from different parts of the world, and are unique to Sharqiya alone. Think about how acceptable it has become to wear a sari (the traditional Indian dress) on occasions, if preferred, over local costumes.

Still, today’s fashionistas can learn a few tricks of the trade from their elders, whose work is known for its refined detail. A handmade nashel from the 1930s would have details in gold thread rarely found in such high quality today.

On the other hand, the gentlemen of Sharqiya have proven that attention to detail is not reserved to the older generation. The mainstream Sharqiya thobe might not be in colors, but the white version today conveys beauty through its detailed stitching and intricate collars. The tageyah (the small white skullcap) may be invisible most of the time, but it’s still crafted with great detail.

For some, it’s hard to watch pieces of the past get replaced, especially when it’s something as personal as clothing that reflects cultural identity. But, the designers in Sharqiya have stayed true to local fashion legacies, not replacing creations that defined the people of the region, but rather bringing about change while staying true to the individuality of Sharqawi style in the modern age.

Tell us about yourself. I was born and raised in Dhahran and I’ve been obsessed with fashion ever since I was 5 years old and I had refused to wear the dresses that my mom had chosen and tried to force on me. I ran away and she eventually found me hiding in the corner of our backyard, drenched in tears Now fashion is the reason I wake up every morning with the biggest smile on my face. It’s also the reason people roll their eyes around me because I can’t stop talking about it. As an outlet and to help inspire girls in the region about the world of fashion, I started a fashion and lifestyle

blog, Style Me Sausan, back in 2012.

Were there any barriers to following your passion? A big one was society’s acceptance towards a Saudi female blogger. But, I dealt with it gracefully, grew thick skin and did my best to understand what people didn’t accept in order to find a middle ground and win them over.

How would you best describe your style? Every day I wake up with a different persona. One day I’m a bohemian hipster and the next I’m in a vintage rock t-shirt matched up with

ripped boyfriend jeans. I look for trendy, timeless and comfortable styles that work well with the place I’m in.

What is your take on the fashion industry in Saudi Arabia? Women in Saudi Arabia are determined, educated, well-traveled and have great taste, so I say that the fashion industry is booming. What I dislike is when bloggers here influence followers to dress in highend designers only, which a lot of young women can’t afford. I’m trying to show that everyone can afford and achieve my look. You can wear an outfit from Zara and make it look like a Chanel with just a little creativity.

FASHION HACKS: TRIED & TESTED If something goes wrong, you can always fix it. By Lama Ghazzawi

We gave a few hacks a try, and here’s what happened.

STICKY JEANS Have you ever taken a seat on a bench somewhere and gotten yourself in a sticky situation? Well, it happens to the best of us. This hack claims that rubbing ice on gum will get it right off without any residue. Verdict: This hack works!

34 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2016

CLEAR COAT TO THE RESCUE Feeling that your glasses are a little loose? Well, clear nail polish works like excellent glue to keep things tight. Verdict: This one may not work for all kinds of glasses, but it’s a little something extra just in case.

ZIPPER GONE HAYWIRE Sometimes, zippers have minds of their own. A cool thing to do is use a key ring to keep it up! Put the circular ring through the zipper and drag it up and over the button. Verdict: Totally useful.

SHAVING CREAM FOR YOUR MAKEUP For this hack, all you need to do is rub some shaving cream onto a makeup stain. Verdict: This one didn’t work very well. (Unfortunately)

IRONED COLLAR This hack can be used for almost any item of clothing with a collar. All you’ll need is a flat iron, which will give you more control over the way you’d like the collar to stay. Verdict: Blessing indeed.

THE ART OF

Traditional

Fashion When passion and talent meet traditional elegance. By Tuba Saricimen

With local fashionistas being on the rise, designing and styling with a sense of culture and tradition has been the new trend. We met with two talented designers and entrepreneurs to get a glimpse into their world of traditional fashion.

Eman Abdulla has an unmatched passion for fashion since early childhood, and although in the beginning, her professional career swerved into accounting and finance, Abdulla soon realized that the dream she has for herself lies elsewhere. Taking her talent, passion and mixed cultural background of Bahrain and Morocco, Abdulla launched Lalla Eman in 2010, a caftan line that combines both cultures. Lalla Eman uses the highest quality material and fabrics such as taffeta, French lace and 100 percent silk. Each caftan is hand crafted with custom made Moroccan threads and buttons, which are handcrafted by women all the way from Morocco.

Fashion Codes targets women who appreciate quality and have an eye for beauty. Al Ajmi says, “We love the play of soft and hard by mixing textiles and creating contrasts. Our designs are wearable, easy, and effortless. We design the garment as a whole, as a look, and we consider our client’s lifestyle. However, I can say that our beading and embroidery is our signature style.”

Everything around me inspires me. I could easily be influenced by something around me, or an art piece that would trigger me to start designing embroidery, fabric and cuts. I then start making a proof of that idea, and redo it until it becomes what I had in mind. — Duaa Al Ajmi

PERSONAL PASSION OF AN ASPIRING AR TIST Come see art in everything through the eyes of artist Alyaa Naffa’a.

Tell us about yourself. I’m a very active person with a curious mind. I love social networking and meeting new people with different backgrounds. Although I’m an interior architect working in Saudi Aramco, my real passion lies in art and being an artist. My dream is to travel and discover the world.

44 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2016

What inspires you? I draw a lot of inspiration from my personal experiences. I use art to express my feelings towards them and to share with others the lessons that I’ve learned.

Who’s your favorite artist and favorite type of art? I like Yasmine AlKoheji’s work. My favorite types of art are portraits and abstract art.

What is art to you? Art is more than just a simple canvas or colors; it’s any form you can imagine. I find art geometry, curves and even simple, clean lines. I believe in mixing different patterns and styles to create your own art piece. I see art as a tool towards escaping reality, getting away from the noise and creatively expressing an idea or a feeling.

What do you think of the Saudi art movement? I’m really happy and proud of this movement, while partaking in it is a great honour. Granted, you’ll always face negative people who believe art is a waste of time, thus offering minimal respect towards our talent. Fortunately, I am blessed with a very supportive community, which I am super grateful for.

Which of your work is the closest to your heart and why? I am so proud of my detailed interactive data map. It succeeds at describing me in so many ways, inserting much emphasis on my passion for linteracting with others. It’s also my most popular piece! olyaa_nn

I believe people are opening up, doing more art events and starting to appreciate it, making me very optimistic of the future. — Alyaa Naffa’a

TO THE FUTURE Noura Ismael’s Retrofit business of turning antiques into modern, useable items.

Her family was not supportive at first, mainly because it meant “no money; just burns and bruises.” But she stuck with it and they came around eventually, with her husband even gifting her a Bosch drill for her birthday – who would think a drill would make a girl’s day? Ismael learned all she knows about electrical engineering from YouTube and handson experimenting, so she admits that she’s come to

the point where she needs a workshop and an electrical engineer to help her through the tricky parts. She retrofits only damaged, unwanted antiques, feeling that only a “psychopath” would ruin a good piece. Many antiques are given to her to experiment with while she gets others cheap from secondhand stores such as Mawakeb Al Ajr in Jeddah.

Ismael. “From plants to the sky, nature is great even though it has nothing to do with what I do. I believe you can get inspired by anything.”

“The ideas come out of the blue,” said Ismael. “I walk around with a notebook and pen at all times but never really use them. I would be lying if I said I sketched any of my ideas, but I’ll pull off a raw sketch every now and then.” It takes her anywhere from three days to a month to complete a piece, depending on how much work is required.

Ismael’s passion, however, lies in corporate social responsibility (CSR). She was working as a CSR supervisor at Al Baik in Jeddah before she moved to Dhahran with her husband.

“I draw my inspiration from everything around me,” said

Ismael studied Graphic Design at Dar Al Hekma University (DAH) back in Jeddah and went on to study International Business Management from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.

You can find all her creations on her Instagram account to marvel at their awesomeness and even buy a few.

There’s no denying, however, that Ismael’s real calling is engineering. Her most memorable piece is an old phone that was turned into a clock and LED lamp. _retrofit_

BARAKAH M E E TS BARAKAH REVISITED A local attempt gone international. By Tala Hussein

Considered a taboo of Saudi Arabian society, “Barakah Meets Barakah attempts to tackle the delicate topic of dating and attaining public space yet instilling comedic relief by following the love inspired journey of two individuals situated in the Kingdom, with much emphasis on the social conduct of the city of Jeddah. While earning its one of a kind title, the film is also being recognized amongst international film efforts and is gaining great momentum in the film industry, highlighting its unusual place of origin. 48 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2016

The Kingdom’s unprecedented role in the world of cinema left a group of young independent filmmakers pushing for the country’s cinematic position, defying any public scrutiny and establishing a common forum for both local and international viewers. Completely filmed in Jeddah, “Barakah Meets Barakah” is an entrance to an ethnographic approach towards the medley of lifestyles within Saudi Arabian society, shedding light on regular everyday struggles of its rather conservative nature.

agh

The film is generated as a platform for local Jeddawis offering a humorous depiction of day to day rather than the usual apologetic and victimizing narrative often conveyed within films of Saudi Arabian focus. The company responsible for the film’s distribution, MAD Solutions, announced the finalizing of agreements with the five prominent Arab media organizations including Sayidaty, Aljarida, Al Akhbar, FilFan and Empire Arabic magazine.

While also receiving its much-deserved international recognition, the film will be notably representing Saudi Arabia at the 2017 Academy Awards by competing in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Coinciding with its recent release in Arab theaters, the film has also received considerable acknowledgment from several international film festivals, including the 60th BFI London Film Festival (Oct. 5-16) competing in its Laugh Gala, and the 41st Toronto International Film Festival (Sept. 8-18) competing within the Special Presentations section. Having accomplished a groundbreaking entrance at its world premiere at the 66th Berlinale, where it won the Ecumenical Jury Prize within the Forum section, “Barakah Meets Barakah” succeeds in representing the fluid state of affairs within the Jeddawi experience, allowing the film to become a societal turning point.

Another Audrey Hepburn classic, a tale of a princess in disguise who goes on adventures with a handsome journalist around Rome.

While describing his vision to costume designer Editch Head, director Alred Hitchcock insisted that Grace Kelly’s character “was to look like a piece of Dresden china, nearly untouchable.”

(2013)

Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of the American classic “The Great Gatsby” could be best described as visual excess, and same applies for the costumes. While it is set in the 1920s, Luhrmann’s brief to costume designer Catherine Martin was that it “has to be totally the ‘20s, but you have to find an unexpected fresh way of seeing it.” And that’s exactly how the costumes turned out!

COCO BEFORE CHANEL (2009)

Any favorite foods or products you’ve come across in your travels?

I once worked with Australian Chef Andrew Feilke and the Australian Embassy to promote Tuckeroo Gourmet Foods. Amazing stuff! I’m always on the hunt for similar-quality products to combine into my baking and create unique and wonderful desserts inspired by foreign taste.

What has your culinary education been like?

What advice would you give home chefs who are inspired by your style of culinary style? Don’t aim for any type of imitation, as your talent is slowly discovered by simple exploration. Your learning is initiated by trial and error, which requires patience and dedication in order to find your perfect culinary and artistic representation.

Do you find it a challenge to constantly aim for innovation?

It’s very challenging, especially here in Saudi. I often find myself having to gradually ease people towards some of my more eccentric or modern tastes and ideas, but it’s all worth it for being able to introduce them to these new worlds of flavor by exploring exotic combinations.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE Decodes Mammograms For a more precise and accurate breast cancer risk assessment.

Breast cancer screening is almost for free in KSA, however few women actually take the test. Around 73 percent of the cases are detected in an advanced stage, which minimizes their chances to be cured. The University of Washington published a survey in 2015 under the consensus and funding of the Saudi Ministry of Health and its Institutional

Review Board (IRB). According to the survey, 92 percent of the total 10,735 participants reported never having a mammogram. The MOH and other key players in the Saudi healthcare sector have to consider more aggressive means to inform women about the importance of mammography and the latest technologies in expediting breast cancer detection.

Once ready, plans include making the AI system available to Houston Methodist partner hospitals in Saudi Arabia. HMH is a longstanding partner of a number of leading Saudi healthcare service providers such as King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center and King Fahad Medical City.

Dr. Stephen T. Wong, Chair of the Department of Systems Medicine and Bioengineering at Houston Methodist Research Institute, said that the software intelligently reviews millions of records in a short amount of time, enabling us to determine breast cancer risk efficiently. It is currently under development and evaluation at Houston Methodist but the team expects it to be ready in about a year.

THE FUTURE WITH AI

The AI has the potential to reduce unnecessary biopsies, save physician time, minimize patient discomfort, and provide more precise subtyping of breast cancer for the selection of optimal treatment options. Such an AI system will strengthen women’s trust in early detection possibilities. Web: houstonmethodist.org/global

The AI intuitively translates patient charts into diagnostic information 30 times faster and with 99 percent accuracy. The team used the AI software to evaluate 500 patient mammograms and pathology reports. The software scanned patient charts, collected diagnostic features and correlated mammogram findings with breast cancer subtype. Clinicians used the results to accurately predict each patient’s probability of breast cancer diagnosis. ADVERTORIAL

REAP WHAT YO U GROW

It’s fashion month, so let’s talk about fashionable, edible gardens. By Anaa Mansouri

66 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2016

Local permaculturist, Mohammad Al Saif, is passionate about edible gardens and helped me cultivate my own, restoring my connection to the land.

What principles do you use in your garden? I grew up in Qatif so I use the gardening principles I was raised with, and those I learned later.I also educate people about edible gardens.

My wife’s sister lived in Aramco’s camp for 28 years and had never planted any trees. I gifted them a bundle of fruit trees, which were the “fashionable” thing to have.

Tell us about yourself and how you came into permaculture? I studied in the US and was working in the corporate world for almost 20 years. Then, I reached a turning point: I realized I wasn’t happy. I went to the doctor and he said, “Let me guess: You’re a banker, right? Look at how stressed you are.” He suggested I find another job. When I went home and discussed it with my wife, she knew that gardening had always been a hobby of mine, so she gifted me a course on permaculture with Jeff Lawton in Jordan.

It was eye opening. My family had a 50-acre farm that had been dormant, so I revived it and started networking with the local community, turning my hobby into a profession. It’s a lot more fun spending your day in a yard then in the office!

Mohammad Al Saif in his element.

DESTINATIONKSA.COM

67

WHAT’S YOUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE? I envision getting involved in permaculture design on a big scale in Saudi Arabia. We need more trees for the dust storms and as wind blockers and food sources. We can grow trees without having to waste water if we grow the right types.

Homegrown orange trees.

What’s your greatest challenge? The lack of education. We’re starting something most people don’t know anything about in this country. Schools around the world take their kids out in beautiful environments where they interact with the earth and plant things. I would love to bring kids on school trips to my nursery and teach them how to garden. My six-yearold daughter knows how to compost and plant trees and regularly takes fruits to her classmates. 68 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2016

What would you like to leave our readers with today? There are fruit trees in Saudi Arabia. We have papayas, bergamot oranges and so much more. We buy fruit from the market but we could actually have productive fruit gardens in our houses instead. Gardens change people. It’s amazing stress-relief. It’s spiritual. I don’t just plant trees for people, I sell them an edible garden. Edible gardens are engaging.

Education is central to my mission. In the short term, I have a nursery and I want to educate people and get them engaged because gardens transform you through interaction. I also want to preserve Qatif’s date trees. Growing up, this area was like a forest, but today 80% of the trees have been cut down. As a community we can apply permaculture principles to our native trees and preserve the land. Mob: +966-567462442

ACTERIAL UDDIES

A healthy stomach is a healthy person. By Dr. Rehan Al Taji

FERMENTED FOODS ARE THE RICHEST SOURCE OF NATURAL PROBIOTICS. THESE INCLUDE:

More than 2,000 years ago, Hippocrates said, “All disease begins in the gut.” It’s a piece of wisdom that remains true to this day. Our immune system was the first to come up with the idea of using bacteria to boost our defenses. These bacteria, also known as probiotics (which means "for life”), hold the key, not just for healthy digestion but also for a strong immune system, mental health and so much more. "Many people with health issues, such as thyroid imbalances, chronic fatigue, joint pain, psoriasis, autism, and many other conditions do not realize that these illnesses originate in the gut,” said Dr. Josh Axe in his guide about probiotics. The highest concentration of this good bacteria is found in our gut and is referred to as intestinal flora. Your digestive system alone colonizes about 100 trillion bacteria of different species, 10 times more bacteria than all your body cells. 70 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2016

Our gastrointestinal tract hosts both good and bad bacteria, with a sweet-spot balance of about 85 percent beneficial and 15 percent harmful bacteria. Falling out of balance will lead to all kinds of illnesses and negative effects on the body, but simply by consuming probiotic-rich foods and supplements, you can bring things back into balance.

Raw Cheeses (unpasteurized)

Sour Pickles

Sourdough Bread You can also get probiotic supplements, in the forms of capsules, tablets, powders and liquids.

Keep any eye out for two things: - High CFU counts, anywhere between 15 and 100 billion. - Strain diversity of about 10 to 30 different strains.

FALSE FADS Diet trends you really should stop believing.

Trend #1 Detox diets to cleanse and lose weight.

Whether it’s a juice cleanse, a temporary vegan reset or taking certain supplements, there is little evidence that supports the claim that detoxes actually remove any toxins from the body. Our bodies naturally cleanse themselves through the liver,

72 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2016

feces, urine and sweat. In terms of weight loss, there is no sound evidence to back up the claim that detox diets support weight loss. Although some people may lose weight in the short term while on a detox, whether due to severe calorie restriction or simply eliminating certain unhealthy foods, it is often regained when you start eating normally again.

KEEP THIS IN MIND

Trend #2 Eliminating certain foods for weight loss.

Gluten, dairy, meat and carbohydrates are just a few of the items that some suggest need to be eliminated from the diet in order to lose weight. The truth is, if there isn’t a medical reason – such as celiac disease or lactose intolerance – to cut out a nutrient or food group, doing so is unnecessary and can actually be unhealthy.

It's more likely that weight loss is due to behavioral changes rather than elimination. For example, if you cut out gluten from your diet you will presumably be consuming more fresh fruits and vegetables, which are naturally lower in calories than most glutencontaining foods.

Trend #4 Everyone needs a cheat day.

There is a large social component to eating and when we get together with family or friends, food is usually a part of it. Allowing oneself the chance to enjoy a nice meal with loved ones is perfectly fine, but understanding the concept of a cheat day is just as important. A cheat day is meant to allow you some of the (unhealthy) foods that you love so that you don’t feel deprived.

Trend #3 Foods labeled as “health foods” are always better for you.

A food that is labeled as healthy, organic, natural or even purchased at a health food store does not automatically make it healthy. It is important

to always read your labels and ingredient lists, no matter where you shop. A food product can be labeled as organic or natural and still contain large amounts of sugar, fat and other unhealthy ingredients.

Some people find this very effective while others may not. If done incorrectly, a weekly cheat day can actually reverse your progress made throughout the week. Instead, try having a “cheat meal” so that it doesn’t turn into a whole day of eating in excess and result in weight gain.

FITNESS MYTHBUSTERS Fitness habits you’ve been doing wrong. By Seyma Saricimen

With the constant interruptions of summer and Ramadan out of the way we can finally get back to our fitness goals and clean

up the mess we made to our bodies. Instead of the usual fitness tips that you're bound to read everywhere, I thought it'd be good to

74 DESTINATION SHARQIYA OCTOBER 2016

dispel any negative or flat out wrong information we might have stored in our minds. Let's have a fresh start for our minds and our bodies!

Cleanses don’t help lose weight

Fat does not turn into muscle Fat and muscle are entirely different tissues, so you can’t convert one into the other. Although muscle can’t physically turn into fat, it can wither.

Fresh juices and drinks aren’t a good idea One of the worst forms of nutrition is liquid. Store-bought drinks and coffee are packed with heaps of sugar and little to no nutritional value; stay away! Even health fads like juicing spike up your insulin levels and don’t do much good.

Crunches are not the best way to a six pack

Carbs aren’t the devil Your body’s main source of energy during an intense workout is glycogen which comes from carbohydrates. What’s bad are simple, processed carbs that provide no nutritional value.

You know what burns fat? Eating less and working out more. You might lose a couple of grams from a cleanse but that is usually water weight that is quickly gained back. The body is quite capable at cleansing itself without outside help.

Lifting weights does NOT make you bulky Ladies, your body doesn’t make enough testosterone to build muscle mass the way men do and even men have a hard time. Size comes from a high calorie consumption, which is why bodybuilders have to eat A LOT.

Getting a six pack is more a result of eating a clean diet and reducing body fat than any ab exercise you do.

Scales aren’t an ideal measuring tool Scales don’t consider how much of your weight is lean mass and how much is actual fat, or what kind of fat there is. A person might weigh little and still be carrying unhealthy fat around their organs compared to someone fit and strong weighing much more.

Light and diet foods

Light weights don’t tone

You can’t target areas for fat burn

Foods that are labeled low-fat, light or diet are foods that are processed and useless for the body. They’re also higher in sugar content which spikes insulin levels and causes instant fat storage.

Toning isn’t a thing; you either build muscle or you don’t. Using light weights doesn’t help you get ripped quicker. Eating clean and getting lean does though, regardless of your weights.

Full-body strength training and cardio workouts will help burn the excess fat from places you want gone eventually. Working out will burn overall body fat, but you can’t control where it comes from.

Glimpses

OF MADINA’S PAST History found in a historic structure. By Mohammed Mirza

It would be more apt to call the museum Madina Museum rather than the vernacular that has given it the name Hijaz Railway Museum after the train station it is housed in. Mind you, you won’t be finding any significant locomotives or other steam engine parts here. Though, there is a stretch of the historic track, a train shed

82 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2016

and whatever is left of the locomotive engines on the rear, they remain cordoned off for tourists. The focus in the museum is on the history of Madina in general. The museum covers the history of Madina from once being a small oasis town to becoming the capital of an Islamic empire that was spread

over continents. Constructed by the Ottoman Sultan, Abdul Hamid II, in around 1908 AD, the century-old structure still holds strong and is very well maintained. The railway station contributed to Madina’s development, but was soon put out of service after a couple of years when the first world war broke out.

Facade of the museum.

It was thrown open to the public in 2006 after being shut for almost 90 years. For the residents of Madina, the railway station is known as Istasyun. This was the last station on the Hijaz Railway line that ran from Damascus.

I remember first seeing the structure when I visited Madina years ago when our bus parked in front of it. Our hotel was near the station. I remember it being beautifully lit at night; I thought it was a government office building back then. Fast forwarding years ahead, the museum was in front me and Turkish pilgrims were all around it marveling at the structure their forbearers, the Ottomans, built. Inside, a wide hall housing very few artifacts greets visitors, at the center of which is a downsized model of the station itself. We were lead to a small room connecting the hall that housed traditional clothing of the women of the city; most of them were dresses meant to be worn at weddings. A darkly lit wooden stairway that has a beautifully crafted Turkish window leads to the upper floor.

There we saw what could be considered one of the most remarkable things on display in the museum; a bow that is believed to have belonged to a companion of the Prophet (PBUH), Saad Ibn Abi Waqqas (RA) himself.

The upper floor has a long corridor adjoined by multiple rooms, the kinds you see in hotels. The room probably once functioned as offices for the railways during its heydays. Today, each room is dedicated to a specific piece of history. A room housing arms and ammunition was probably one of the biggest attractions on the floor that had numerous rifles, swords and shields covered in glass cases. Nearby was a room that had minted coins and currency notes from the era of King Abdulaziz. The history of Saudi Arabia, right from the first house of Al Saud is brought to light in a room that has long framed posters on its walls. There is also a room that has old photos of Madina; the rapid modernization of Madina is evident from these photos that were taken less than a century before.

Bow believed to have belonged to Saad Ibn Abi Waqqas (RA)

Once we passed the corridor we reached a hall, though smaller than the one on the ground floor that had old hand written copies of the Quran. There were also gold and silver coins dating back to the Umayyad era right next to them.

Rifles

We then came upon a room on the ground floor that had naturally occurring rare stones that are found in the region including the pink quartz and the agate stone on display. Adjacent to it was the pre-Islamic hall that had ancient pre-Islamic artifacts housed within it.

Pink quartz, flint stone and a stone from the gold mines near Madinah.

A visit to this museum is a must. The tour groups have long been taking visitors to the Qiblatain Mosque and the site of the seven mosques; this museum needs to be added in the itinerary. It sits within walking distances from the Prophet’s Mosque. Turkish tour groups have already started taking their pilgrims to this museum, it’s probably time for other religious tour groups to follow suit. Plus, the entry is free.

Ottoman era artifacts.

The most intriguing thing about them were the ancient inscriptions that seem to the untrained eye to be non-related to the Semitic languages at all. There were also ceramic dishes and incense burners from the same time period that had exquisite motifs painted on them. There is another railway station in the country from the Hijaz Railway line that is open to the public. This one is at Madain Saleh, some 350 kilometers to the north of Madinah.

Caravans to Makkah For centuries Hajj pilgrims arrived through one of these three main caravans.

By Mohammed Mirza

Egypt

The pilgrims in the main caravan came from Anatolia, Central Asia and the Levant. They gathered in Damascus from where they’d set off for pilgrimage, a journey that took them roughly 30 to 35 days. Pilgrims coming from North Africa gathered in Egypt for the second caravan that took a coastal route to the Holy Cities; the journey took about 35 to 40 days.

86 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2016

Pilgrims coming from Persia and Khorasan would gather in Baghdad and form the third major caravan. They would crisscross the deserts of the peninsula to reach the Holy Cities. Pilgrims coming from East Asian countries would normally choose the sea route. They would arrive at the ports of Jeddah or Yanbu from where they continued their journey towards Makkah.

Khorasan

The caravan route was lined with a network of forts and guarded wells, particularly the route from Damascus as it was this route that saw the most number of travelers.

The caravans coming to Makkah were highly organized and stocked with food and goods. In fact, an armed guard led by a commander known as Amir Al Hajj protected the caravans. Armed guards were necessary to prevent raids from Bedouin tribes. The Amir Al Hajj would pay a tribute called Sarr to the tribal leaders whose territory the caravan passed through. Some termed the caravans to be like moving cities, which apart from an armed guard and an Amir, had a judge, saddler, chef, secretary, inspector of weight and provisions and two notaries amongst others. The norm for the caravans would be to march in the night in order to avoid the heat of the Arabian sun during the day. Each caravan was grouped according to the point of origin and would maintain the same positions in the line of march. The opening of the Hijaz Railway in the beginning of the 20th century marked the end of the celebrated caravans, as it facilitated pilgrim journeys coming from far and wide.
