SPEAK IT FORWARD
Pay It Forward, is a social initiative developed in March 2016, by university students who envisioned promoting an important value in our community. The idea is to pass on good deeds from one person to another. In line with this, the Pay It Forward team organized a speakers’ conference “Speak It Forward.” The speakers embodied the concept of giving without expecting anything in return and were brought on stage to motivate and inspire our society to do the same. Alongside the conference was an exhibition with projects and charities to further ignite our sense of giving. 10 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2017

THUMBS DOWN Women Eat Like Everyone Else
We love the fact that the country is progressing. Kudos to the move of letting women drive, and letting women work in sectors where we hardly thought they could. While we know change is clearly here, it seems some establishments still haven’t gotten the memo. There’s something wrong with the idea of making female customers wait at the side of the road for their orders. It’s questionable to instruct women to give their orders through their drivers and refusing to give them face. It’s unacceptable to ask them for their debit card pin codes just because you don’t want them to come in to pay for their food.

THE STARS Mishaal Ashemimry talks about her inspiration and fight for science.
The Unaizah desert is located close to the Saudi city of Unaizah in the Najd province. While unknown to many around the world, this desert is actually very close to Mishaal Ashemimry’s heart. The American-Saudi aerospace engineer and founder of MISHAAL Aerospace, a company based in Miami, Florida in the US that specializes in launch vehicle/rocket development for space applications, recalls the moment during her childhood in Saudi that sparked something in her, “It was dark and cool with the faint whispers of the camels in the distance. I looked up at the sky; it was illuminated with very dense stars. And that’s how I was inspired.”
she’d revisited Unaizah desert, Ashemimry lit up with a smile and said, “I have never been back there since that moment, so I need to revisit. I would absolutely go in a heartbeat.” Ashemimry is based in Miami, Florida, where she founded MISHAAL Aerospace in 2010 to pursue her ultimate dream of building rockets. She is currently looking for investors for her company. Talking about her plans, Ashemimry says, “If things don’t go the way I want them to then I will most likely go back to get my PhD. If things do go well, I’d be really interested in seeing some space related items in the Middle East and Gulf in general. It would be nice to see a space agency or something spacerelated happen here.”
Inquisitive as a child, Ashemimry couldn’t stop asking questions about the stars that had become her biggest curiosity. She wanted to know what the stars were, “The best way to know them is to go to space, and how do you do that? Rockets can take you there.” This childhood curiosity grew into an education and profession. When asked if
However, certain restrictions on American companies would make it difficult for Ashemimry to bring her company here, “There are a lot of policies, especially in aerospace. It’s a very sensitive and regulated field.”

should not let obstacles stop them from achieving their dreams, “You’re going to face some very complex and difficult obstacles along the way, especially as a woman, that may deter you from where you need to go. You just need to focus on your vision. People who face criticism and are put down, they are the ones who get there. They’re the determined ones.” The highlight of Ashemimry’s trip was the event at Dar Al Hekma University where she gave a talk on her work and journey in aerospace, “People seemed very receptive. I felt like they had something to gain from it, which to me is the whole purpose of having a strong online presence.” The young aerospace engineer believes in taking initiative and fighting for what makes your heart beat, “Essentially from a passion perspective, because a lot of the time the world around us can hinder that. What’s interesting to me is that some people are not even aware of these sciences that are out there. When they discover it and like it, they start reading more and it creates this bug, this spark that makes them yearn to learn more.” That spark for Mishaal Ashemimry was looking at the sky in the Unaizah desert, “All I needed was the stars to inspire me. I think all I needed was the stars.” Web: mishaalashemimry.com mashemimry Mishaal Ashemimry

A MODERN-DAY PHILOSOPHER Entrepreneurship, Bob Marley, and the wisdom of Jamal Al Akkad. By Noura Al Joaib
We often feature business owners of either young startups or multi-generational family dynasties in Destination. We often talk about their personal journeys, their struggles, and of course, their successes. However, for every successful business owner, there are hundreds struggling to make it. These men and women deserve a voice. Their stories are just as important as those who have been successful. In fact, their stories may even be more important to you than the business owners that have made it. It is from our failures, and the failures of others, that we can truly learn and grow. So, who will give the silent majority their voice? The moment the door opens, the first thing that catches my eye is his perpetual smile. He looks like a man constantly on the verge of laughter. His eyes convey a passion and drive to help the thousands of entrepreneurs he’s worked with, whose dreams he believes in as strongly as they do. He understands them and feels for them. And more than that, he is here to help them. 14 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2017
This, ladies and gentlemen, is Jamal Al Akkad.
STAFF PHOTO/ ALZAHRA ALDAWOOD
Al Akkad has founded several entrepreneurship-support organizations, lectured on entrepreneurship across the Kingdom, and been an entrepreneur himself. He is articulate, quick to answer, and well-read. By his own accord, he has had a string of failures in his life which he has gotten back up from and persevered to become the national icon of entrepreneurship in the Kingdom that he is today. I asked Al Akkad to sit down with us to give us perspective on the entrepreneurship ecosystem.
Al Akkad exudes an infectious love for life that carries over into everything he does.
The first myth he debunks is that entrepreneurship means starting a business. Entrepreneurship, as Al Akkad eloquently puts it, is a way of thinking that embodies innovation and creativity; it means approaching problems in non-conventional ways with “no taboos in front of your way of thinking.” Taking a creative idea and commercializing it, is another matter entirely, one that requires the entrepreneur to “come down from 50,000 ft. and start with what is doable and practical.” It’s this step that many entrepreneurs neglect, and why many startups fail. However, Al Akkad believes that failure is a necessary step in eventual success. In his love to help people achieve their dreams, he pushes them to learn from their failures rather than fear them. He encourages them to persevere, and asks them to reflect on DESTINATIONKSA.COM 15

their experiences, because he believes in their capacity to find the answers within. Al Akkad admits that he often does not know the answers, but then again, neither does anyone else. He famously quotes Bob Marley: “Don’t let them fool you, or even try to school you.” This is the second myth he debunks: no one knows the formula for success, it is something you must figure out for yourself. And, more importantly, your success will be different than anyone else’s success, so don’t try to be like someone else. 16 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2017
Al Akkad also points out that entrepreneurs in various regions of the Kingdom have unique traits that they capitalize on. For example, Sharqiya has long been influenced by the presence of Saudi Aramco and SABIC; these influences have led to entrepreneurs that are extremely committed and disciplined. Entrepreneurs from Najd, on the other hand, have long been adventurous, brave, and willing to take calculated risks. Consequently, the greatest economic growth in the Kingdom has come from
Najd. Hijazi entrepreneurs have a unique ability to capitalize on and create new markets, as a consequence of a millennium-old heritage influenced by Hajj and Umrah. As such, Hijaz demonstrates the greatest economic diversity of any region in the Kingdom. You won’t find this regional analysis of entrepreneurship in any report or textbook. This is Al Akkad’s own interpretation of a field he has spent his life working in. He has leveraged his knowledge of our history and his experiences to weave a philosophical analysis of the

ecosystem. In fact, if you were to describe Jamal Al Akkad in a few words, it would be that he is a modern-day humanistic philosopher. He believes that our society would do well to reflect more often on our history; there is a lot that can be gained from knowing what we accomplished in our past, knowledge that can foster our belief in ourselves to achieve more in the future. When I ask Al Akkad who has made him the man he is today, who influenced him personally and professionally, he starts with his greatest
personal influence: his mother. With love and compassion, he professes his gratitude to her for raising him to be a fighter with the heart of a poet. He then turns to his professional influence, and says “My Grandfather”, whose name he speaks with reverence and awe. It is from his grandfather that Al Akkad learned to love life, to focus on his own growth, and not to judge others; essentially, the principles that make Al Akkad the man he is today. When I ask him whom he idolizes, he mentions Martin Luther King, Jr., because of
his “I Have a Dream” speech. Al Akkad strongly believes the world needs more dreamers. To illustrate this point, Jamal Al Akkad references King Abdulaziz, who, to Al Akkad, was a dreamer; a dreamer who dreamed of a much better world for his people in the early 20th century. He was a visionary, an entrepreneur in his thinking, and today, we are all living the realization of King Abdulaziz’s dream. Web: Evc3.net Email: jamal@evc3.net Jamalalakkad

The pilot project will be monitored closely to analyse the overall contribution of a digital currency to the sector and possibilities of its further application or termination. The numbers are expected to increase to 58,000 jobs and a GDP of 8.6 billion riyals by the end of 2027. SIGNIFICANCE: Cryptocurrencies are getting a lot of attention worldwide for their benefits, such as low issuance cost and ease of transport.

SUBSIDIZED HOME FINANCE FOR SAUDIS: SUPPORTING HOMEOWNERSHIP
The subsidized housing loan program is an extensive effort by the Real Estate Development Fund (REDF) to encourage home ownership across the Kingdom. The program helps cover the total applicable cost of interest on the loan amount for citizens with an income of SR 14,000 or below. The program will partially cover the applicable cost of interest for citzens earning a higher income. SIGNIFICANCE: By covering the profit margins of the lender, the program offers affordable home finance for eligible citizens, in addition to a fast real estate finance option that takes a maximum of 5 years, as opposed to the average 10year period. A RIYADHI AND HIS TRUMPET Twenty-five year old Mohammed Hakeem on playing sweet notes and all that jazz. By Reema Al Humaid
Tell us about yourself. I’m a Saudi who’s originally from Neptune. I’ve lived all my life in Riyadh. I went to King Faisal School and I recently graduated from Alfaisal University with a marketing degree. I’m a big fan of food and arts. I love cats and jazz. I also appreciate listening to genres like classical, blues, rock, fusion, etc. Music has been a big part of my life and will always be my favorite out of everything else I like or do.
When did you start learning music? It’s been 12 years since I started. I didn’t learn how to play music until I started noticing the patterns of sounds.
24 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2017
I grew up listening to different genres and learned to appreciate how sounds can influence moods. I started singing, whistling and drumming to create sounds. — Mohammed Hakeem
What instruments can you play? My first instrument was a guitar, back when I was 13. My brothers and uncles helped me with playing notes and chords, and reading tabs. At age 17, I used to mess around with my friend’s piano. It’s similarities to the guitar opened doors for playing new melodies. Last year, I tried playing drums and trumpet. The trumpet is not as easy as the other instruments, but it is the most fun out of them all. I had also never thought of playing a brass instrument, up until my friends got me one as a birthday present. It requires a lot of breathing but I enjoy every single breath I put into that instrument. I can play a little bit of Oud, as it’s similar to the guitar, minus the frets, but gives me a different vibe. I can also play the saxophone and clarinet but on a beginner’s level.
country’s music scene has started opening up lately and the majority is accepting it. Music was never wrong or bad, but it can definitely affect a person’s emotions. It’s giving people with hidden talents the chance to learn and express with sound.
What are your future plans in music? To communicate with as many people and musicians as I can here in Saudi and abroad, and compose my own music using different instruments.
What do you think of the music scene in Saudi?
Are the pieces you play original or learned?
I had thought that music would never be appreciated. But the
I’ve always played original songs that my band mates and
I compose. But recently, I’ve been covering jazz standards that are helping me learn new licks and styles.
What is your advice to someone who has just started learning how to play music? Start learning with music theory. RIYADH'S SFX MAKEUP ARTISTS Talk about extreme makeovers by Safa Hassan
Looking to transform your look into one of your fantasy characters? Or perhaps you want to bring your A-game to your next costume party. These artists decided to go beyond the usual and master the art of SFX makeup. Their mad skills are bound to take you to another dimension regardless of the occasion.
HANEEN KHOJ
“ROSE WATER IS MY SKIN’S SECRET WEAPON.” If Photoshop was a person, it would be Haneen Khoj. After graduating from Blanche Macdonald Centre, Vancouver, she volunteered for high league brands like Clinique and Chanel, before shifting to Riyadh and working as a makeup artist at MAC. Besides bridal and party looks, Khoj is passionate about SFX, too. After being inspired by her friend’s galaxy cupcakes, she started recreating the galaxy look on her clients. She loves transforming her clients completely into a bunny, mermaid, an ice queen, or even the galaxy. She happily tells 38 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2017
me, “I do what I do because of my clients; the happiness on their face after the makeup is priceless. And when they come back to me asking for more, it’s the ultimate confidence boost; it creates a deeper emotional connection.”
Haneen’s Tip:
Tone, moisturize and prime, before applying makeup. Using rose water with your moisturizer results in a much smoother look.

RAKAN BINBELLA RAW the Artist “Believe in nothing but elevation, love, light, and Allah.”
STAFF PHOTO/NAWAF ALFARRAJ
By Duha Al Hosainy
40 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2017
Raised in Sharqiya, Rakan Binbella went to the US to study for his Bachelor's. A few degrees and adventures later, he settled in LA, working as a model, actor, singer, and now a designer. We sit with Rakan and get a glimpse of his passion-driven life.
Tell me a little bit about yourself.
I’m a Pisces which means I’m easy-going and adaptive like water. I'll take the shape of whatever jug you throw me in. I’m all about evolving and selfgrowth. I don’t judge; if you're willing to grow as a person, I like to surround myself with people like you.
What do you do?
I experience life, by being observant and receptive. I'm an artist, that's why I name myself Raw the Artist because I'm raw, inexperienced, still shaping myself. I’m always trying out different things and working on new projects. I currently started a brand called Meoji.
What is Meoji?
It’s a streetwear brand with a unique twist. It’s a project I made where I became more a painter than paint. Meoji gives the customer the freedom to choose their own logo by placing the logo inside the clothes, and magnetic pins can
be picked to choose your own style that represents you the best.
What do you do in your free time?
I don’t have a schedule, I just go with the flow. I keep working on different projects whether it's designing for Meoji, vlogging, modeling, talking with my Snapfam or just chilling on the beach.
Who is your role model?
My grandfather affected me a lot, he’s a regular guy but he was always a wanderer. Even though he wasn’t educated he climbed his way up and became a Major General and later on got a PhD from MIT. He was always ahead of everything and saw the bigger picture.
DESTINATIONKSA.COM 41
Tell me about your path in music.
RAKAN BINBELLA RAW the Artist
Music always played a big role in my life. I got intrigued with hip hop because a lot of knowledge and teachings passed down. I’m still experimenting with different genres like jazz and old school RnB. The first piece I wrote was for a critical english class while I was studying engineering. Because it was right before spring break and no one really attends class the professor gave us the option to write anything and submit it as our final project, that’s when words started flowing out of me for two straight hours. I submitted my poem, performed it as my final project and got an A.
Who are the people you’re targeting?
The entire world. That’s why I speak four languages, Arabic, English, French, Spanish and I’m currently trying to learn Mandarin. I want to preach for humanity and that we’re all the same, only flesh, bone, soul and experiences.
What is a piece of advice you want to give to someone who wants to start any project?
Fail. Just go ahead and fail. If you aim to be a perfectionist, you will always be one step behind. As an artist, I think art is not a blessing, it’s something you have to try and diversify, for example if you’re a good painter you’re also probably a good singer or cook. Web: meoji.shop binbella

Saudi-born Paris-based haute couture jewelry designer Nourah Al Faisal launched her own scintillating brand – Nuun – in 2014, and her beautiful creations have grabbed the attention of global jewelry seekers in a big way.

44 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2017
After graduating from university, Al Faisal apprenticed at Georland, a famous high jewelry shop in Paris, learning the nuts and bolts of designing couture jewelry. She then commissioned pieces for over 15 years before finally setting up her Nuun empire, the embodiment of her personal aesthetics heavily influenced by her culture and heritage.

NOURAH AL FAISAL
Al Faisal’s fixation with jewelry developed very early on; she enjoyed visiting the high jewelry shops at London’s Bond Street and Paris’s Place Vendôme with her mother. “I was particularly captivated by the precious metals, the gems, how they’re designed to fit and enhance the human body, and how they express the personality of the people who wear them.”

the neck. “They need to be beautiful but also comfortable. It’s essential to visualize what the piece will look and feel like before it’s made.” So she sticks to a simple practice, her overall design mantra. “I try to simplify as much as possible. I’m not a minimalist by rote, but I don’t like overly complicated designs either,” Al Faisal says.
MANCHETTE HOWLITE BANAJIR BANGLES
Nuun jewels are also influenced by everything else she was exposed to while growing up and things she comes across when she travels. One of her popular creations, Banajir bangles, has a distinctive pattern purely reflective of a traditional geometric pattern often found on the doorways of Saudi houses. When it comes to what women really look for in jewelry they purchase, Al Faisal considers
that it mainly depends on the type of jewelry and what the occasion is. “I believe that women are more drawn to beauty; they go for jewelry pieces that can express their personalities and make them feel special,” she says. “I try to design pieces that I would want to wear myself. Personally, I’ve always given priority to quality over quantity.” To make each piece fit perfectly, she stays aware of how a bracelet will rest on the arm or a necklace around
Showcasing her creations highprofile exhibitions is equally important, as she explains, “It’s important to introduce what I do to a wider audience. Exhibiting designs is part of the creative process. This is where the Middle East comes up since it’s my home. Women in the Middle East have a very strong sense of fashion and a wonderful understanding of jewelry.” Everything has been happening behind the scenes, but now it’s open for all to see, as she has opened a boutique in Paris next to the Bristol hotel. At the end of the day, Al Faisal takes delight in the fact that her jewelry pieces are used to celebrate love and life. It may be a birthday, an anniversary, a wedding or any other special occasion. “Through them, I get to be part of people’s joyful moments,” she says. “I’m a very private person, so my jewelry often celebrates happy private moments. And I want it to stay that way.” DESTINATIONKSA.COM 45

They open at 7 a.m., which for us is the best time to take in some sunshine while reading a book or planning your day - and who doesn’t love a quiet start to the day?! For an even more tranquil morning, the nearby DQ trail will give you solitude, which is perfect for a bit of sunrise before hitting Eggs & Flour for one of their breakfast options. And, not to forget, that oh so good brew they have going. Location: Kindi Plaza, Diplomatic Quarters eggsandflour.ksa

Food is Art. Art is Life. A conversation with Chef Abdullah Abdulrahman Mohammed
Mexican roasted potato
Chef Abdullah is a food stylist and photographer, who took his passion where his mouth is. His talent became apparent from a young age; he was already drawing and dabbling in different arts at 10 years old. In 2009, he pursued his interest in photography.

In 2011, I decided to lose weight and started cooking for myself. I failed many times but worked hard to teach myself, checking online, trying out different things, and reading books about cooking. In 2014, I took a bold step and started working at Steakhouse as a cook. This is where I learned more about food, which helped me with my freelance food photography. In 2016, I started working in Rosh Rayhaan Hotel in Riyadh to gain more cooking experience. Now, I do product and food photography, and I do food styling based on my experience as a Chef.

What's your story?
“Instagrammable” food has become a trend; what one advice would you give people on food photography? Saudi lamb kabsah with a twist
That’s hard to express in one piece of advice, because it’s a complex combination of the art of cooking, styling, and photography. But I can say that mostly you have to pay attention to details like photo toning, the things that will be inside a photo frame should be related to the dish, aim for simplicity, and the main focus should be on the food.
What's the hardest dish to style?
Fine dining dishes, because they involve artistry. As a food stylist you need to work hard and have experience to be able style any dish.
If you get to style one cuisine for your entire life, what would it be?
Saudi cuisine. I would try to make it a bit more modern and suitable for fine dining.

Rock Climbing in Riyadh With Haya Al Jarba Discover a zen and rush 50-feet above the ground. By Jou Pabalate
With Riyadh’s many valleys, mind-blowing cliffs, and boulder formations, rock climbing is a sport that fits right in. It’s a city where the great outdoors can be considered the perfect playground for thrill seeking, nature loving folks like Haya Al Jarba. Al Jarba had a knack for climbing trees growing up. As an active Saudi girl, she found herself dabbling in different sports, enjoying the feel of the pitch or the sound of her sneakers screeching on the basketball court. Hence, when
Zaki, one of Riyadh’s rock climbing pros

a friend invited her to try out indoor bouldering back in 2014, she found herself hooked at first grip. Her trial on the wall quickly turned into a passion. Al Jarba started to go out into the city and met with other rock climbers who became her Friday squad. They would go on weekend adventures around Riyadh, mostly in Wadi Hanifah to conquer different peaks and discover new routes. Eventually, her love for climbing would turn into a vocation of sorts for Al Jarba. She wanted to encourage others to get into the sport. She joined Kore, the first female gym to have an indoor climbing wall accessible to women, where she now teaches rockclimbing.

For those getting into rock climbing, Al Jarba emphasizes on the importance of not taking a solo path towards it. The basics, safety measures, and techniques are important to master before you head out to conquer a route in the valleys. “The best training for climbing is to climb. Falling is inevitable by the way, but we teach you how to fall right.” Once she knows you’re ready, Al Jarba will pull the soft mat from beneath you and take you to your first rock wall. The climbing culture in Riyadh is getting stronger and you will meet climbers and groups out there. Zaki, one of the veterans with jaw
dropping skills in Al Jarba’s group shares, “Rock climbing is not just an individual sport. It requires communication and trust, between the climber and the belay (the one holding the ropes, your life is literally in their hands).” Rock climbing whether indoors or outdoors is a full body workout, but the benefits of it is not limited to getting fit. “For me, rock climbing is also partly meditation. When you’re up there, you don’t think of anything, overthinking can stun even the best of us. You focus. Conquering a wall gives you a sense of accomplishment and that on its own makes the climb worthwhile.”

December is the month of reflection. By Mai Kholief
DECEMBER HABIT: REFLECT
This is when I realized a pattern: most goals people were setting were vague and generic. We often set goals that are too overwhelming and lack a time frame, and when we fail we become frustrated and the cycle continues. It’s important to ask yourself how you can sustain and maintain your goal weight - this is vital to weight loss management. To reach

December is the best time to reflect on the past year, and also plan for the year ahead. This is how 12 Months to a Healthier You was actually born. The idea behind this challenge occurred to me last year, with the hype of New Year’s Resolutions everywhere. I asked my clients and followers what their goals were and what stopped them from reaching them. I realized the most common goal was to lose weight.
A Review of the 12 Months to a Healthier You challenge! January: Cut added sugars by 50% or completely. February: Developed meal planning & preparation. March: Got check-ups done. April: Cut out on the salt. May: Detoxed the right way. June: Learned to indulge in healthier desserts. July: Made hydration important. August: Took 10k steps a day. September: Better sleep, better life. October: Talked about healthy food, active living and Breast Cancer Awareness. November: How to reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes.
optimal health and fitness, you must change your lifestyle, which includes eating habits and exercise. Breaking down goals into more manageable and smaller chunks will make it easier and more sustainable. Signing up for the 12 Months to a Healthier You challenge should have, by now, taught you consistency and patience. You should also have learned how to make overall lifestyle changes. But let’s not forget about our mental health. Self-reflection in the form of prayer, meditation, relaxation and deep breathing is an effective way to calm your mind and nurture your spirit. The pace of today’s world makes self-reflection more difficult, but a mere 5-10 minutes a day can calm your mind. Looking within helps us define our happiness; you can do this by thinking about things in life that you are grateful for. A little self-reflection will help you understand how much joy and peace we can have in our lives if we only learn to recognize it. For those who joined us on this journey, whether through our articles in Destination Jeddah or via monthly campaigns on Instagram, how was your experience? Did breaking down the habits make it easier & more achievable? Happy New Year! Email: mai.kholief@mfit.fit mfit_maikholeif

Walking through the Ruins of Khaybar A journey through time. By Mohammed Mirza
There’s so much to see in Saudi Arabia – for instance, after spending a night in Madinah and two hours of driving north out of the city, its famed date farms blurred in the distance to give way to the arid desert and eventually the town of Khaybar.
Taking a by-lane off the highway, we reached the old part of the city – a bewildering sight as the road snakes through dark ruins that have bountiful palm trees growing amongst them. The city used to be a major food basket for neighboring regions. 72 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2017

The ruins are preserved well, despite some of them being almost 1,500 years old. Khaybar once housed fortresses, with powerful families controlling each one. Today, it is hard to identify the fortresses, but seeing the sturdy construction of the
remains, we can only imagine their impregnability. The town didn’t seem to have a proper layout – the roads were just wide enough for cars to pass through and the dwellings were built in random clusters. These clusters were, at times,

should definitely be on a Saudi bucket list. The place is resplendent with history, the kind that somehow stays with you for long. Just when we were about to leave, we saw a tourist bus stopping by, and as they stepped out of their buses their faces had much the same bewildered look that we had when we first entered the city. The dark basalt rocks – likely sourced from the volcanic fields of Harrat Al Khaybar nearby – that the houses are made of give the town a distinctive and somewhat eerie look. The whole town can be explored on foot in an hour. Some even explore it whilst sitting comfortably in their air-conditioned cars, but to get a real feel of the place, an onfoot experience is required. The author shopping in Hofuf, 1978
OLD HOFUF For a long time now, even before arriving to Saudi as a 22-year-old engineer on my first assignment, I was captivated by the ancient oasis town of Hofuf. It is mentioned in the Bible, and I had read that the old market hadn’t changed much for millennia, so it was one of the places I looked forward to visiting in the Middle East. In 1978 and 1979, I lived in Abqaiq and worked on Aramco construction sites for a US contractor. During that period, I visited Hofuf seven times. On our one day off work (Fridays), different friends would join me on forays in the Eastern Province in a borrowed company pick-up truck without 74 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2017

An hour’s drive south of Abqaiq was the oasis of Al Ahsa, with its vast groves of date palms, bisected by narrow roads. A short distance from Hofuf’s crowded streets, it provided shady picnic spots and an irresistible opportunity for a quick swim in the cool, clear waters of its irrigation canals. A bit farther, Jebel Qarah, with its silent caverns and steep, dusty trails, rewarded climbers with spectacular vistas in all directions. Coming from suburban California, I found Hofuf to
be an eye-opening experience. I would wander and lose my way in the labyrinth of narrow alleys of the old Qaisariah Souq. The same old silversmith greeted me on several visits. I would sift through his bucket full of what appeared to be ancient silver ornaments, pendants, rings, and bracelets. On one occasion, I purchased a triangular, Bedouin-style pendant mounted with a large red, semi-precious stone and a row of small silver balls on short chains dangling from the bottom. The price after vigorous bargaining: SR 90. Around the corner, we chanced upon fruit vendors and the “women’s market” with its
