FEELING RIYADH’S PULSE IN

LOMAR AND ONQOUD’S NABD By Johara Almogbel

Stepping into Raffles Institute, we are automatically greeted with thought-provoking imagery. A shmaagh, both stiff and fluid, is hung on the wall opposite a gorgeous fuchsia print of Arabic calligraphy exiting mid-movement from a man’s head. Next to them, an embroidered photo of whirling dervishes patiently waits for people to recognize its genius. A group of wooden geometric circles rounds it out nicely. It’s eclectic. We’re impressed and we hadn’t even managed to make it past the reception area yet.

Wandering around the second gallery, it’s apparent Lomar and Onqoud’s collaboration is thus far shaping up to be a wonderful creativity fair. Asides from the group art exhibition, which featured the work of 19 artists using different mediums, Nabd also hosted multiple activities including a local designs showcase featuring works and products by local designers, workshops for adults and children, and art talks that exhibited Saudi artists and initiatives.

capturing Saudi’s collective pulse through the different perspectives around us.

As a creativity fair, Nabd aimed to unleash the artist within everyone and help them build their creative confidence by introducing them to new ideas and points of view.

The fair was inaugurated by Loai Naseem, designer and founder of Lomar, and was attended by a number of socialites and social media influencials including poet Saeed Al Manea, social media icon Mohammad Al Nehait, and members of Telfaz 11 team.

Nabd’s beginning needed a theme that focuses on

With that in mind, “Wejhat Nathar” was chosen as the theme for this year. The beauty behind ‘point of view’ lies in the fact that it is one of the most essential parts of the human experience; it is something we are all familiar with because we all have a viewpoint. (Especially here in DR, where we like to share that viewpoint with everyone as many times as possible).

BUSINESS

FINANCIAL PLANNING WITH REEM ASAAD Investing 101 In fact it takes enormous amount of discipline and perseverance if one was not trained to “behave well” with money at an early age. But what’s next? A rule of thumb is that inflation (the increase of price of goods and services) eats into our savings. In simple words, as time passes, the “purchasing power” of our money declines and we are no longer able to purchase the same amount of goods or services at the same price a year ago. So, in order to combat inflation, the savings must be invested appropriately in order to preserve (or gain) value.

But how do you go about this? SOME OF THE MOST COMMON QUESTIONS HERE INCLUDE: • How do I invest? • What is a good investment for me? • Should I opt for real estate or stock? • Which stocks should I select? • What do you think of gold as an investment? These are just some of the questions. Most investing starters get ahead of themselves, which is what the @Nasi7atReem initiative deals with frequently. 16 DESTINATION RIYADH MARCH 2015

We often talk about the benefits of saving and accumulating money in a bank account or at home. This is a great starting point to building wealth.

The investing process can vary in complexity but there are rules and guidelines too. SO IF YOU ARE A STARTER IT WOULD HELP TO FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

your investment 1 Identify objective: In other words,

determine your goal. Why do you want to invest? The first obvious answer is to grow your wealth (or “capital appreciation” in finance lingo). There are other goals including obtain regular income, maintain liquidity, and preserve capital against inflation. Each one of these goals will be analyzed further to detect if it is really suits your needs and lifestyle. A professional adviser can help you through this exercise.

horizon: This 2 Investment is the total time period an

investor expects to “be in” the investment. This is very important when determining suitable tools and selection.

Required return: It’s about 3 the percentage return

that an investor wishes to achieve in any given investment plan. This can be different from a realistic expected rate of return.

Risk Tolerance: This is about 4 how much risk you can

bear in order to achieve the stated goals. An investor’s tolerance to swings in the value of an investment varies from one person to another. The answers to all these questions constitute a preliminary “Investor Profile” which can be further tuned to design an optimal investment plan. In the coming issues, I will zero in on more details related to the “Investor Profile.”

The Author: Reem Asaad is an inspirational Saudi woman. She is a wife, mother, writer and financial adviser. Asaad was ranked the third most powerful Arab Woman in 2012 by Arabian Business Magazine. Email: Nasi7atreem@gmail.com @Nasi7atreem

“MY SISTER MADE ME DO IT!” LATIFA AND SHEIKHA AL SUDAIRY, A TALE OF TWO SISTERS

The Sudairy sisters are a perfect example of what empowered Saudi women can achieve with the right mix of courage, curiosity for life and siblings who push each other out of their comfort zone. By Jou Pabalate

“It was a turning point from being sisters to also being friends. Friendship plays an important part in how we now are towards each other; as I think it does for any siblings. You learn to really trust each other and get to know yourself as well in the process.” Latifa, 35 and Sheikha, 32 are the eldest of five children. Despite their generational gap, their siblings, Haifa, Najla and Mohammed are also

18 DESTINATION RIYADH MARCH 2015

STAFF PHOTO/MOHAMMED DEGHAISHM

Latifa and Sheikha were born two years apart in the US before moving back to Saudi Arabia, where their childhood was spent in the northern city of Al Jouf. When they reached high school age, the two were sent to boarding school. These years had a tremendous impact on them both. Concerning her time away at boarding school with her sister, Latifa shares:

some entrepreneurs would opt to land themselves at the top of the pole, Latifa had the insight and gusto to work from the ground up. “I went and did it all, from stocking and inventory, merchandising and being a sales lady in the store.”

determined to create their own life paths. Being part of the Sudairy family tree entails a certain legacy and privilege —but as Sheikha was quick to point out, their parents instilled in them the importance of hard work and creating their own individual successes: “We have a lot of things to be grateful for, Al Hamdullilah, but we were raised in a way wherein we knew the value of hard work. Our mom and dad would always ask the question, ‘What do you want to be? It’s not a matter of ‘if you would work…’ but simply, ‘when you start to work’.” As a result, Latifa and Sheikha both found professional success, albeit in different forms. One rose to the challenge of entrepreneurship and became the leader of the family-run retail firm, EYAT. The other went on to serve the larger community through her work at one of the oldest and most trusted non-profit organizations in the Kingdom, Al Nahda Charity Organization. Though the career paths of these two sisters diverged, one went into the commercial world of retail, while the other pursued charity work, it’s important to remember and inspiring to know that each played a critical role in the other’s career choice.

Latifa Al Sudairy A Luxury Fashion Trail Blazer Latifa started working at a very young age. At 19, she took a job in the treasury finance department of Saudi British Bank, while simultaneously studying at the Institute of Public Administration. When her father, Dr. Salman Abdulrahman Al Sudairy established EYAT, Latifa got on board and helped build the company from the ground up. She is now serving as the Operations Manager and Chief Buyer for the retail firm. Since its inception, Latifa has taken a hands-on approach to learning the ins and outs of the family business. While

As Latifa fondly recalls, the story of Lati Boutique all started with a dress that came her way through her sister. Sheikha, a grad-student at the time, came back from New York with this gorgeous Anna Marie Couture dress. “It was the first time I had heard of the brand. It was beautiful and, to top it off, reasonably priced. The following winter break, she brought home more dresses from other designers. The numbers on the price tags made sense. You wouldn’t think twice about buying them.” And so the idea began to develop in Latifa’s mind. The idea which eventually became the luxury boutique we know today. A shop was established where you are treated like a princess, while buying stunning dresses that are reasonably priced.

DESTINATIONRYD.COM 19

“We were taking a walk through a garden in Spain when Latifa suddenly said, ‘You should open a flower shop!’ It was so out of nowhere but it got me thinking.” Sheikha laughs, “It’s not that I ended up becoming a florist, I really don’t want to be an entrepreneur but just the idea of doing something else, something out of the box. It gave me that motivation I needed.”

Sheikha Sudairy A Champion of Women Empowerment Sheikha, from an early age, has always wanted to serve the community and give back. It’s what inspired her to take up politics for her undergraduate education. For a time though, she took on a job in investment banking, a lucrative career but it left Sheikha wondering what more she could do. Just as her choices had inspired Latifa, Sheikha gained the courage to step out of her comfort zone from her older sister. It seems that the sisters had, without planning it, entered into a partnership of reciprocal positive reinforcement.

20 DESTINATION RIYADH MARCH 2015

Sheikha didn’t use that motivation to open up a flower shop. Instead, she earned a masters degree in Psychology. When she finally returned to Riyadh, an unexpected encounter, made possible through an event Latifa was participating in, introduced Sheikha to the Al Nahda Charity Organization. Sheikha candidly shares that growing up; she was a shy girl who would rather stay in the background. It’s quite interesting how the Chief Project Officer is now a vision of confidence and a role model for Saudi women professionals.

The Power of Two Eventually, Latifa and Sheikha, who are both big on social responsibility, found a way to apply their professional interests to a worthy cause. Lati Boutique became the first Saudi fashion retail store that offered a unique CSR program that allows its customers to directly impact the causes they believe in. After each purchase, you are given tokens, which you can drop into jars that represent the different programs of Al Nahda – Education, Awareness and Training. When asked what program she is most keen on supporting, Latifa admits, “I love and believe in all the causes we promote, although I do have a soft spot for awareness campaigns. We really need to do more to raise awareness of certain issues. So, yes, when I’m manning the store, you’ll see a lot of tokens dropping in that jar.”

Your wedding day is probably the most important event in your life, if only because it’s absolutely about you and in our cruel cruel world, events are usually about other people as well. And because it’s a day that you should be enjoying to the max, we at DR think it’s time for Riyadhis to break out of the wedding rut we’re in. It’s time to be fresh! It’s time to be light! It’s time to be fun and let your hair down! It’s time… for a morning wedding.

HER

ESSENTIALS

Choose a sleek looking camera, like the Fujifilm X20 (found at Qomra).

THE RED LIPSTICK One of the first things a bride should pack is a red lippie, no matter where she’s traveling. It’s the easiest way to look instantly ready, appropriate for any occasion and best of all; it weighs as light as a feather. We love the Rouge Allure lipstick from Chanel in Pirate. Chanel.com

AN LBD: Don’t forget the Little Black Dress. It’s a lifesaver! You can wear it to a romantic dinner or a late lunch. Be inspired by Audrey Hepburn’s classic dresses in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. DR loves this black The Row plisse dress on Net-a-Porter.

Wherever you’re going, don’t overpack. Try to maximize your space and avoid wrinkling by rolling each item of clothing tightly, and then pack them snugly on top of each other. Stuff your socks inside your shoes—not only will this save you space, but it will help your shoes retain their original shape. Pack smaller items like underwear, bathing suits, and toiletriesin clear plastic bags to save them from getting misplaced between your clothes.

THE CLASSICS: Pack a pair of blue jeans, a classic white shirt and navy striped espadrilles if you’re on your way to a hot destination. Otherwise pack the new ankle boot kitten heel and loads of oversized jackets. Moda Operandi has a wide range of jackets from new designers.

SKINCARE: Skincare is the most important item in a new wife’s life. Pack the necessities only and stick to tried products. DR loves Rodin Olio Lusso - an oil that adds radiance to any type of skin. This face oil has a huge fan club from the fashion and beauty industry insiders. We find it travel-friendly and skin saving on longhour flights. We love the simplicity of this black Marni coat.

Ankle Boot Kitten Heel

FRAGRANCE: Smell like the way you want to be… Spritz Byredo’s Flowerhead – a floral fragrance inspired by the founder Ben Gorham’s heritage and his own imagined Indian wedding. Its notes include angelica, cranberry and lemon. Or use their newest romantic fragrance, 1996, inspired by a photograph of a young girl entitled Kirsten 1996 taken by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin that year.

HIS

ESSENTIALS +

Crew Neck Jumper

SUIT: A well-cut dark suit, preferably from Tom Ford. Visit Tom Ford’s boutique in Centeria Mall for a custom made suit.

THE CLASSICS: A White Button Down Shirt and classic jeans. There’s very little that won’t go with a button down shirt. Worn with a suit for a more casual look, under a crew neck jumper or over a bathing suit, this is the most versatile item in any man’s wardrobe. For classic cut jeans choose Levi’s, preferably a vintage cut just like this one on sale on MrPorter.com SKINCARE: Investing in a good aftershave and a moisturizer is essential. We love Aesop's Moroccan post shaveing lotion for a smooth 'manly' finish.

FRAGRANCE: Experiment a lot with fragrances but trust your instinct as you choose your personal fragrance. We love Tom Daxon's Absolute.

AISHAH AL BANAWI

Remember the Name! By Abdulaziz Salah

42 DESTINATION RIYADH MARCH 2015

Tell us about your musical dream and what led you to choose Arabs Got Talent.

Someone once told me, “In the eyes of the public, your success will seem like it happened over night. However, only you know how many years you put into your dreams and how hard you’ve worked.” I have been chasing these musical waves for a very long time. I have been part of a rock band, played shows in the LA music scene and signed an indie label. I have been nurturing this dream, taking care of it and now I’m letting it fly. This constant journey has shaped who I am today.

Being featured on Arabs Got Talent has been on my list for quite some time, and I am beyond thrilled to be representing Saudi Arabia.

PHOTO/LINA MALAIKA AND MARCEL SEVERINO

Aishah Al Banawi recently hit the screens through Arabs Got Talent and completely left us wowed! We were given the pleasure to learn more about her.

What experiences led you to dive into music?

I was four when my mother took me to an audition for the role of Trouble in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles. It was my first onstage experience alongside some of the world’s most incredible opera singers. A Russian opera singer, Galina Gorchakova, played my mother on stage. I still get the chills when I think about her voice; how she sang her vibrato with such poignant vocal ability that it left the entire audience in awe. This moment was my first epiphany. I began observing and developing an ear for different musical genre, and it felt like I could see music in real life. I remember watching Fantasia by Disney, and how every visual movement paralleled a certain sound. Without music, life is rigid and dull. It’s not so much as how I got into it, but more how it found me.

Tell us more about your personal life.

I enjoy prayer, meditation, connecting to nature and clean eating. People initially see me as playfully energetic and outspoken, however, I am an introvert at heart. Malibu is one of my favorite places to nurture spiritual practices.

What message do you plan to get across as a musician?

I just want people to feel alive and happy. And I want them to love themselves, because I have a lot of love for them.

What kind of music are you working on currently?

I am working on some new musical material and writing a lot about my days in Saudi, which taught me a lot about myself. I can’t seem to put down my pen when I remember all of the incredible times I had in my beloved city; the roads, driving in those bright city streets, having tea and prayer with family, discussing deep profound ideas about life with awesome people. I am a student at Columbia University in New York City. It is a nice balance from stage to classroom.

Where do you plan to take your music?

Presently, I am thrilled to be participating on Arabs Got Talent. I visualize myself studying at school while recording and performing. When I study well, I perform better, and when I sing my heart out I study better. And if a record deal presents itself along the way, I am up for the challenge.

What are your thoughts on the music scene in Saudi?

When I lived in Saudi, there was a lot of underground music going on which has now started to emerge more into the open. I am so excited that this music scene is evolving and expanding. It’s an opportunity for us musicians to get together and connect in a beautiful way. Aishahmusic

Yousef and Soraya

By Johara Almogbel

In the budding art scene of Saudi Arabia, artists like Soraya Darwish and Yousef Alshaikh are a rarity. With an awesome eye for talent, a passion for the arts and the willingness and energy to fully support it, both artists are a driving force to be reckoned with.

44 DESTINATION RIYADH MARCH 2015

And, best of all, they have one of the most adorable back stories we have ever heard of! We got the opportunity to sit down with them and get the behind the scene details about ... well. Everything. Behold, some magic!

STAFF PHOTO/MOHAMMED DEGHAISHM

SAUDI ARABIA’S ART POWER COUPLE

How did you two meet? Y: Back in late 2009 I

started a number of small collaborative side projects on Facebook. Soraya was one of the first people to join one of the projects. That was the beginning of our friendship and the very first milestone in building a beautiful relationship! Our first proper outing together was to the magical Albalad district in Jeddah, which to this day has a special place in my heart.

S: Back when Facebook was

hip, this was the platform for connecting with people. I was also a member in DeviantArt. com and, if I remember correctly, he liked my work and sent me a friend request on Facebook. I participated in a couple of online collaborative activities he created and I recommended his page to a friend. Next thing you know, we both went to an exhibition by the British Council at Beit Bant at Albalad in Jeddah.

What do you think of each other’s art?

Y: What I love most about Soraya’s artwork is how honest it is. She has such a way with expression that is very piercing and raw. I hope to one day be able to express myself in such a personal and honest way!

S: I’ve always admired

Yousef’s love for experimentation. I never met any artist like that before and it really inspired me. I try my best to encourage him to make time to create because he is most alive when he does. I honestly believe his art is awesome and I do try very hard not to let my jealousy get to me!

How would you define the artistic aspect of your relationship?

Y: We are both artists at heart and everything we stand for relates to empowering selfexpression in each other and others around us. Our life at the moment revolves around Onqoud, a creative incubator. Onqoud is all about bringing creatives together, so you can imagine most of our days are spent working on art that shapes both our professional and personal relationships. S: Since his first visit to

Jeddah, Yousef would always bring an artistic gift with him. He draws silly things to make me laugh and I always loved that! It’s always interesting to see the look on people’s faces when they’re going through my very dark sketchbook and suddenly come across a funny drawing of a cat saying “I love you.” I love telling people that

this is what Yousef does to cheer me up and it’s one of the main things that made me fall in love with him.

How do you click outside of art?

Y: Great question! Because most of our days are spent submerged in creative work, whenever we get free time we tend to spend it enjoying each other’s company doing simple things like sitting on the Corniche, spoiling our cats or watching a funny movie. S: We love playing games like the guessing game where one thinks of something and the other has to guess it by just asking questions. Another one we’ve been playing recently is Truth or Truth rather than Truth or Dare.

How did Onqoud come to life?

Y: For me, it started at university when I cofounded Shayirha, a student club for sharing design ideas. I knew I wanted to take that passion and make it a central part of my life. Luckily, in 2012, Soraya, Mariam and some other friends joined a startup incubation program at KAUST VentureLab, where they planted the seed behind Onqoud, and shortly after that I joined as one of the co-founders.

DESTINATIONRYD.COM 45

S: In a nutshell, it was

developed at KAUST’s VentureLab in 2012. For 3 months I continuously asked Yousef for business advice since he was more knowledgeable. It only made sense that he should join Mariam Hamidaddin and myself to make the great team that we are today! When I first pitched the idea, VentureLab team was not sold. However with each week, their belief in Onqoud grew. Onqoud continues to be one of the alumni referred to as a proof of VentureLab’s success.

What’s your biggest inspiration?

Y: Seeing passionate people.

It doesn’t matter what it is that you are passionate about. If I see you being passionate about something I will feel inspired.

S: I hate to admit this but I’m

an Instagram addict. I think the reason for my addiction is the fact that I’m following so many inspiring people. Instagram continues to be one of the main keys to endless knowledge about healthy food, yoga and fitness.

What kind of mediums do you work in?

Y: I am very passionate about experimentation. I love all mediums equally, but if I had to specify a medium I enjoy the most, I would say it’s “new media,” which is the intersection of art and technology.

46 DESTINATION RIYADH MARCH 2015

S: I would say my favorite

medium depends on my mood, really. For instance, when I edit a photo on my phone, it’s usually a quick release for me and I get to share that form of expression on my Instagram.

Do you remember your first artwork?

Y: I’ve started dabbling with art and making stuff in general a long time ago so it would be difficult to say what exactly was my “first” artwork. My first exhibited work was a piece called “Processed by Hierarchy” which I exhibited in Istanbul back in 2010 as part of Edge of Arabia’s Transistion exhibition.

S: I can’t say I do, but it

depends on what you consider an artwork. I do remember our 1st grade teacher asking us to draw the four seasons. She never made sure we wrote our names, so when she put them together in booklets for us to take she mixed up students’ drawings. Obviously I’m still upset about it because I still remember that the four drawings my mom saved are not all mine. I don’t even remember the teacher’s name, but I do remember this isolated incident. Thankfully I did get the snowman I drew and he’s survived for 20 years! Onqoud

INSTAGRAM PICK OF THE MONTH

On the Chopping Block: Madhouse Cookies By Johara Almogbel

The baked goods business trend seems to be shifting towards cookies. We’re so ecstatic about this that we decided to try out the first cookie business we could find. Madhouse Cookies has a catchy name, and the guy behind it has promised he uses nothing but the best ingredients for his creations. We can definitely attest to that from what we have tried. Our favorites are: The Midnight cookie with its perfect combination of chocolate with a hint of citrus zest, The Ghost cookie, a coconut white chocolate cranberry cookie that was so good we ate a whole bunch without realizing, and The Sneaky cookie which comes with a hint of a lovely surprise. This jury was quite satisfied. Case happily dismissed!

Marks and Spencer Café

By Johara Almogbel

Let me put it straight: it’s tough trying to find good bagels in town. Fortunately, we’ve hit upon a jackpot of hidden baked goods. It was a dangerous adventure, requiring that we cross the treacherous trails of Hayat Mall and gain entry from the sentries of

time and space to go into Marks and Spencer. But we found bagels, fresh bagels, in Riyadh. We also discovered homemade shortbread and donuts, chalkboard signs, and - and this is our favorite bitready-made pies in the food hall.

The seating was serene, with standard chairs and couches dotting the place and a general hushed atmosphere all around. The fresh baked goods were all worth the trip.

YOU’VE GOT TO TRY Rossopomodoro: A TASTE OF ITALY

Tucked Away: Hummus Rukn Zaki

By Faris Al Yahya

YOU CAN small: SR 6 ORDER FOR TAKE AWAY IN big: SR 10 extra large: SR 20 Location: Al Muhandis Musaad Al Angari Street next to Orubah Road, right in front of Al Khaleej Schools.

There’s little we don’t love about Rossopomodoro. They usually start you off with a bruschetta (which is great!), and some calamari (which is average). We also ordered the margherita, quattro formaggi and basil mozzarella pizza. The dough, tomato sauce, and cheese quantity were all perfect, possibly the best pizza in Riyadh, hands down. As for dessert, we had the fried dough balls covered in Nutella, which is the closest you could get to heaven in Riyadh and we refuse to be convinced otherwise.

The only thing we don’t like about the place is that there isn’t enough light filtering into the restaurant, so that should let you know how much we like the place. The service is great! Definitely recommended.

Hello again, fellow food adventurers! I understand your quest for hole in the wall places with cheap yet authentic food around Riyadh. In this issue, I’m going with a regular small falafel shop that opens between 5 - 6 a.m. The place is best known for their hummus, which is proudly displayed on their sign. Their hummus is one of the best I’ve tasted. It contains boiled chickpeas, chopped parsley, sumac (which is a very important ingredient to me personally) and a lot of virgin olive oil. The hummus is then served with a large piece of fresh flat Arabic bread. It does get stuck annoyingly in your teeth, but that’s solvable with water. It will definitely get you fully satisfied, set your standards high, and have your taste-buds alert for good hummus. DESTINATIONRYD.COM 55

MAKI-ING YOUR WAY THROUGH RIYADH

We’ve trekked all over the city checking out the top maki and sushi dens this side of the plateau, from old-school joints to raw-fish newcomers. Drum roll please… By Jou Pabalate

DR Recommends:

For the adventurous, try the Otoro – Blue fin tuna, foie gras, kinpaku, Hamachi – Yellow tail, nikiri soya, yozukosho. Flavor seekers, go for the Beikoku – soft shell crab, scallion, sambal mayo, garlic, ginger or the familiar, Tempura Roll.

56 DESTINATION RIYADH MARCH 2015

When Yokari debuted last year, there was a short moment of silence then a resounding applause from the foodie community (at least in our heads there was). Their extravagant raw fish emporium is luxury at its best, with some of its ingredients imported directly from Japan. The Yokari style Nigiri selection is the finest you’ll find in the city and we will totally put our money where our mouth is on this one. There’s no denying that Yokari is on the expensive end of Japanese dining in the city but it’s definitely worth every riyal.

Established in 1986, it is the Godfather of Japanese dining in the city. Tokyo has evolved throughout the years, from a more shabby than chic spot at the far side of the city to the now casual dining den on Oruba street. We would have to admit that their sushi and maki rolls

have gotten smaller in serving lately but with the same tasty quality. If you’re going for an easy night out with friends or family, it’s still the cozy place that makes you feel Big in Japan (while in Riyadh). DR Recommends: Go for the inverted maki rolls and if you’re looking for more value with your money then it’s best to get the sushi platters or mix maki combos.

DR Recommends: You can’t go wrong with the crunchy rolls! The volcano maki is for folks who love a kick (like a wasabi ball hitting your tonsils kind of kick).

The newest addition to the Japanese scene, Nozomi is an English franchise that has enjoyed success. The ambience is as fancy as it comes, reminiscent of a Manhattan or London Sushi lounge. Our editors insist on noting that the black cod tempura maki is

the star of its menu. It’s the right amount of crispy and soft and we wish we had ordered three of it. The crunchy toro maki roll was the second best.

The DR Anti-Recommendation: (Yes, we had to pull that out of our black hats), their spider roll was dry and lacked any texture. It tasted like sushi you left open in the fridge overnight. We do say axe it from the menu. 5. SAMURAI Faisaliah Mall 4. SUSHI YOSHI Exit 5 and Dabab St.

The DR team was divided on this one but it got enough points for showing culinary creativity with its maki and sushi menu. It may have also helped that they have SUSHI ETIQUETTE 1. Pick them up using chopsticks or fingers. Both are correct. 2. Dip the fish or sushi side up, not the rice in the soy sauce.

Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away” and Naruto Shippuden showing on their TV sets constantly. If you’re not a hard core sushi fan, this is the place to go because they give you modern adaptations and varieties.

The only food court joint to make it in our list, Samurai is our pick for convenience, quick service and decent sushi. It’s good for satisfying your craving especially if you’re nearing the end of the month

3. Put the whole sushi portion your mouth. It’s actually bad etiquette to bite it in half and leave some on the plate, especially if it’s the rice.

GETTING READY FOR YOUR BIG DAY!

So you are getting married and you want to look amazing on your big day, but you have no idea where to start, what to eat and where to find the time. I have one word for you …KISS! By Rob Seagreen Fitness Director at Arena MMA and Fitness Center

Firstly, sort out your food. Balance your intake and supplement it with a decent workout. Avoid processed foods, refined carbohydrates and SUGAR! The Zone Diet is a simple way of eating that gives you the flexibility you need to stick to it. It is separated into equal blocks of protein, carbohydrates and fats.

62 DESTINATION RIYADH MARCH 2015

A block is a unit of measure used to simplify the process of making balanced meals. 7 grams of protein = 1 block of protein 9 grams of carbs = 1 block of carbs 1.5 grams of fat = 1 block of fat

This assumes that there is about 1.5 grams of fat in each block of protein, so the total amount of fat needed per block meal is 3 grams of fat.

When a meal is composed of equal blocks of protein, carbs and fat it is 40 percent of its calories are from carbs, 30 percent from protein and fat.

KISS stands for Keep It Straight and Simple. Don’t try and complicate your goal. There is so much on TV and in magazines that try and lure you to the “unique way” of achieving your goals. Fact is, if you want to achieve your dream, you need to chase it. I am going to give you a shortcut.

ZEN IN THE CITY

Riyadh’s Top Spas I’m sharing my spa adventures with all of you, men (yes, I recognize you’re stressed too) and women in dire need of some pampering. By Jou Pabalate

AL MANAHIL CENTER (Women Only)

Tucked at the heart of the Diplomatic Quarter is one of the first women centers in the city. Their spa and beauty salon has been around for years and despite not being the most accessible place in our list, it does have a long list of loyal followers.

Al Manahil Center

Location: Diplomatic Quarter Tel: +966-11-4881069

DR Recommends: If you live outside the DQ, you can still easily access Al Manahil by telling the guards at the gate. While I hesitate to give you my favorite masseuse’s name (it’s already difficult as is to get an appointment with her), I do so as a public service—look for Siva when you make your reservation. I would personally recommend the Aromatherapy massage (SR 350 per hour) for people who want things light and relaxing.

Its quiet location makes it conducive for anyone who wants to do an overnight stay just to have a change of scenery. Location: Al Balaghah Rd., near Oruba St. Tel: +966-11-4807799

DR Recommends: The ayurvedic massage is amazing and you should try their Nepalese body scrub at least once (you’ll want it over and over again). Their oriental massage, which I do hope you get to have in their Japanese inspired treatment room, makes me go ohm (and snore shortly after).

TYPES OF MASSAGES

Getting a massage is like ordering a meal. You should get a massage depending on you feel your body needs. Here’s a list of the most popular ones on spa menus to help you get started:

Shiatsu Shiatsu is a form of Japanese bodywork that uses localized finger pressure in a rhythmic sequence on acupuncture meridians. Good for first timers.

HOT STONE SPA (Women Only)

A personal favorite, Hot Stone is one of the first spas that opened in Riyadh that didn’t look like a clinic. A health and beauty center, it’s a one stop shop for women.

Hot Stone Massage Heated, smooth stones are placed on certain points on the body to warm and loosen tight muscles and balance energy centers in the body. Ideal for people with muscle tension.

Deep Tissue Massage Deep tissue massage targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. Be warned, this massage will actually make your body hurt a day or two after.

Location: Takhassussi St. Tel: 920009698

DR Recommends: The hot stone massage (there’s something oddly relaxing with all the clickity-clacking) or the Swedish massage. Look for Rosa or Sally. Full body massage price starts at SR 350 per hour.

Thai Massage Thai massage aligns the energies of the body using gentle pressure on specific points. Expect to be stretched, moved and bent by your masseuse.

Swedish Massage Therapy Consists of long smooth strokes, circular kneading motions and some applied pressure using oil. Best choice for first timers.

Aromatherapy Massage Uses one or more essential oils to address specific needs. The massage therapist can select oils based on the experience you want to have.

Nouman Ali Khan

Why don't we all take advantage of the Internet to learn more about our own religion, and grow closer to Allah – online?

68 DESTINATION RIYADH MARCH 2015

By Maryam Al Dabbagh

This article is about one of the most dynamic and knowledgeable speakers to emerge in recent years: Nouman Ali Khan. His many online lectures on subjects as diverse as Qur’anic tafsir (decipher), ethics, and adjusting to the intricacies of modern life as a Muslim, have millions of views and thousands of subscribers. This popularity does not only result from his energetic personality and often-hilarious delivery, but also from his singularly thoughtful treatment of the subjects at hand. Khan, who

does not describe himself as an Islamic scholar but as an Arabic teacher, has a background that allows him to sympathize and connect with today’s youth in a unique way. He spent his early years in Saudi Arabia, where he first studied Arabic, and returned to his homeland of Pakistan before immigrating to the United States as a junior high school student. The resulting culture shock cracked a huge fissure in his sense of religion, even leading to considering himself an atheist, before he renewed his faith and

began an even deeper and more intensive study of the Arabic language of the Qur’an under several knowledgeable teachers. Today, this background, combined with an instinctive sense for how best to engage audiences, has led him to becoming one of the most well-known speakers on modern issues that trouble the Muslim community, both in the US and worldwide. He engages his audiences, both online and offline, by cracking jokes one moment and turning solemn the next as appropriate, while discussing subjects most self-professed scholars shy away from. His videos on Qur’anic tafsir are exceptional in focusing purely on Arabic linguistic analysis: a sophisticated

symbiosis of grammar and morphology, the roots of Arabic words, and tying it all together. This brings about a newfound perspective that even native Arabic speakers will often be unaware of. Each of his tafsir videos brings about a renewed appreciation for the intricate subtleties of meaning in the Qur’an. Now the head of the Bayyinah Institute, he leads the yearly Bayyinah Dream Program, a nine-month in-depth study of Arabic through the lens of the Qur’an conducted in Dallas, Texas. For those who can’t make it to Dallas, and for whom YouTube videos are not enough, the Bayyinah Qur’an Intensive offers subscriptionbased rigorous tafsir and Arabic courses online that anyone can benefit from.

Khan, one of the most well-known speakers on modern issues that trouble the Muslim community

When coming across the verse, “Do they not reflect upon the Qur’an, or are there locks upon their hearts?” (47:24), we often have the uncomfortable feeling of not quite knowing how to answer for ourselves. With Nouman Ali Khan, the answer is that much more within grasp. True reflection on the Qur’an only comes with the genuine pursuit of knowledge; Khan’s endeavors, with Allah’s grace, can enable us all to do just that.

HOW MARRIAGE Can Enhance Your Productivity By Raghad Abied

One of the most important relationships we have in our lives is the one with our spouse. Unfortunately, it seems like we are facing a crisis as the rate of divorce has increased in our Muslim community. It is particularly alarming that divorce increases in the first year or two of marriage, indicating that the couple may have lacked in-depth knowledge of what marriage entails.

70 DESTINATION RIYADH MARCH 2015

The consequences of marital dissatisfaction are indeed far-reaching and have been correlated to high rates of depression, weak physical health and poor work production. Many people spend a lot of time and money preparing for a wedding that lasts a few hours. But how many people actually prepare for the marriage itself?

Since marriage plays an important role in enhancing one’s productivity, here are a few steps in the formula towards a productive married life: Marriage has been described beautifully in the Qur’an as: “And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts). Verily in that are Signs for those who reflect.” (Chapter 30, Verse 21)

How can we find this love and mercy? How can we live in tranquility?

Marriage is a two-way street.

It is not that each person puts in

50-50

but rather both husband and wife need to put in

100 PERCENT

1. Educate Yourself • Learn about the etiquette of seeking a spouse, what is permissible to do and what is impermissible. • Research the questions you should ask him/her. • Learn about your responsibilities and rights over each other. • Pay an Islamic bookshop a visit for reading material on this chapter in life.

2. Decide on Desired Characteristics • Make a list of characteristics you want your spouse to have. Keep in mind that you are not perfect and cannot expect your spouse to be as such. • Recognize traits or values that he/she must have and the areas you are willing to compromise, as no one is completely flawless. • Review this list and make sure it is realistic. Reflect on your own self, what qualities do you have to offer?

3. Consider a Potential Spouse • Consult family and friends for help. • Ensure you or your family speak to this prospective partner’s close friends and family to gain a complete and truthful insight of the person. • Reflect upon his/her character traits, values, expectations, goals/dreams and your compatibility.

4. Pray Istikhara

(The Guidance Prayer) • Pray Istikhara for counsel and guidance. • Seek your parents’ approval and blessing. You have to make sure they agree with your decision. Finally, having come this long way, place your trust in Allah when you have made your decision, and it will be the start of a productive chapter in your lives.

CROATIA Romans, Ottomans, Venetians, Habsburgs and Hungarians; it seems everyone and anyone has invaded Croatia through the ages. However, this year sees the former Yugoslavian state celebrate two decades of peace and in July mark two whole years in the European Union. Start off in the capital Zagreb, a city made for strolling amongst the Austro-Hungarian and Communist style architecture taking coffee breaks in quirky cafes.

Armed with a Zagreb card (free transport and discounts across the city) you can visit one of the many elegant galleries, pop into the Mimara museum to stare at a Rembrandt or appreciate the nation’s greatest sculptor at the Mestrovic Atelier, before spending the evening hanging out in buzzing Tkalciceva. SAUDI ARABIA’S NATURAL WONDER JABAL QARA By Mohammed Mirza

The eastern province of the country is replete with nature’s marvels and tales of bygone times. To experience them for ourselves we decided to visit the most conspicuous of them all – Ali Baba’s mysterious caves at Jabal Qara. Whenever I see photos of Petra, I always find myself awestruck by the auburn mountains rather than the rock cut dwellings. I recently came across similarly colored mountains in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, and wait, it doesn’t end here. It even has a labyrinth of caves and caverns running through it! Jabal Qara (Cave Mountain) is made up of calcareous sandstone, marl, clay and sedimentary rocks. The intricate cave network consists of long passages, spacious 78 DESTINATION RIYADH MARCH 2015

chambers and exquisite rock formations. To visit Jabal Qara, I traveled over 1,400 kilometers from Jeddah to the palm oasis of Al Ahsa. The region is a major agricultural hub which boasts of over 3 million date palms that produce a half million tons of some of the best dates in the world each year. The mountain, which is home to the cave network, sits at around 20 kilometers from Al Ahsa’s capital, Hofuf. The provincial capital is well connected by national highways to major cities such as Dammam and

Riyadh and it also has its own domestic airport. Once in Hofuf we made our way through dense date farms on the outskirts of the city, with the road getting narrower and the trees getting denser as we progressed. Just before we reached Jabal Qara, auburncolored rocky hills started to appear in the landscape amidst palm trees. It was a bit difficult to find. Our navigation apps were malfunctioning and we got lost in the dirt tracks that ran by the farms. Yet in the end we ultimately managed to reach it. We saw the marvelous Jabal Qara rising amidst dense palm trees. The surrounding areas of the mountain are going through major beautification works, making the place more tourist friendly; with lights being installed on pathways, railings being put up on the pavements and a restaurant being built near the entrance of the caves.

Upon entering the dark and narrow entrance of the mountain, we found that it had surprisingly cool air blowing through it on a hot day. The caves are said to be cold in summer and warm during winter, making it a favorite hangout spot for locals. We then walked through tall, linear cave passages and narrow ravines, which led us to a d ark cavern that had bits of light piercing through shafts. It almost seemed like a set of an Indiana Jones movie, truly picturesque!

Locals say that this is the den of Ali Baba - from the popular folktale “Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves.”

The caves are of an uneven height, so stairs have been installed at some places. We climbed a long flight of stairs onto an elevated sunlit portion of the caves. As we continued exploring the place, the caves got progressively narrower and darker. We then came across a crack in the cave so narrow that we barely made through it and reached a den.

There were tourists walking up the slippery slopes of the mountain to the mountaintop, from where there’s a better view of the oasis. But we had to visit other places in Hofuf before sunset thus didn’t have time to make the strenuous journey to the top. With little time left on our side we briefly explored the intriguing rock formations outside the caves.

As we continued to explore the labyrinth, we constantly found ourselves reaching dead ends. It was then we realized that we have reconnoitered the entire place and hence, decided to head back. After finding our way back from the dark maze-like caves we got an amazing view of the innumerable palm trees that inundated the mountain.

It was a bit difficult to find, our navigation apps were malfunctioning so we got lost in the dirt tracks that ran by the farms. Yet in the end we ultimately managed to reach it. We saw the marvelous Jabal Qara rising from the midst of dense palm trees.

We saw all sorts of rock formations outside the caves. Some looked like mushrooms while others were like sore proverbial thumbs. Surreal and majestic, Jabal Qara is truly one of nature’s miracles. Seeing the constant flow of tourists coming from far and wide across the country and the developmental works being done in the vicinity of the caves, it seems like Jabal Qara is all set to be the biggest tourist attraction in the eastern part of the Kingdom. HOW TO GET THERE Once in Hofuf get on to the main arterial road of the city, King Fahd road, and head east. Once the palm groves start appearing on both sides of the road look out for a roundabout. From this roundabout take the second exit. Proceed for exactly 1.2 kilometers and take a right followed by the first left. Continue following this road until you come across a roundabout. At the roundabout take the third exit. Proceed on this road until you come across a deadend. Take a right from there, followed by the first left and you will be on Al Mansoura Road. Keep heading straight for approximately 4 kilometers and you will find the entrance to the caves on your left. Park your car there and walk along the tourist path that leads to mouth of the caves.

A TRIP TO HISTORIC SAUDI:

WADI AL MITNA LOST IN TIME Most people move towards cold and natural areas of Taif like, Al Shifa and Al Hada, but little is known about Wadi Al Mitna.

there is a small mosque with low ceilings. It is completely singular when compared to modern mosques, as it has no air conditioning or proper flooring. History narrates that during his tenth year of being a Prophet, Muhammad (PBUH), journeyed to Taif to gain support of the tribes of Hawazeen and Thafiq. However, the three chieftains of these tribes treated him harshly, setting off vandals on him who pelted him with stones till he bled. After leaving the city, he took refuge in an orchid where the owners allowed him to rest. It was here that the angel Jibreel (ASWS)

Wadi Al Mitna is a less explored historical area of Taif, and those who are aware of its name know not of its story. Located in the south of Taif, it can be accessed through Taif’s main Wadi Waj Street. There are two old mosques along Wadi Al Mitna, under the supervision of Saudi Tourism and Antiques. Many people are seen around there, hiking the mountain and wondering about the place and its historical significance. The mountain is fenced, and at the opening, located on the left, 82 DESTINATION RIYADH MARCH 2015

descended and asked the Prophet if he wished he could command the two hills to collide and destroy the entire town. Despite being treated callously, the Prophet (PBUH) refused, saying that if they do not accept Islam someone in their descendants would. The hut where the Prophet (PBUH) rested has been turned into a small mosque now and people who have heard about Wadi Al Mitna are often seen visiting it.
