FROM THE EDITOR It’s fascinating how a thought seed can turn into a forest. For a decade, Destination Jeddah, Riyadh, and Sharqiya had been your compass to city living and urban adventures. Championing the rapid changes sweeping the country, and being at the forefront of every paradigm, we’ve decided to relaunch as Destination KSA, a national magazine that is braver, bolder, and better. In lieu of Destination KSA’s new direction, I humbly take the reins of the magazine as Editor-in-Chief from Mrs. Enas Hashani, whose steadfast leadership has been instrumental in the magazine’s success. As a new era dawns on Saudi Arabia, we are experiencing a surge of creativity, seeing uncertainties as possibilities. It is only befitting that the articles we feature reflect who we are today as people and what we can be as a nation. It is with this in mind that our inaugural edition came to be themed, “A Brave New Saudi.” While the phrase shares semblance to a literary classic’s title, our rendition is one that believes in a bright future and looks towards it with a charge of optimism. We’re highlighting how these exciting times have given rise to young, brave Saudis who pave new paths and capture the indomitable spirit of the new generation.

RENAISSANCE TO VISION A proud Saudi academic institution rising to realize the objectives of Vision 2030. Meet Nahda Academy…

Let the vision of Nahda Academy become your vision and watch your child create the future of the nation.

As Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman wrote in his introduction to the 2030 Vision document recently, “All success stories start with a vision, and successful visions are based on strong pillars.” Nahda Academy is the result of a vision; a vision of Ms. Fatima Naghi to contribute to her beloved Saudi Arabia, with a generation of children

who are ambassadors for their country, both locally and globally. Children who are proud of their Saudi cultural heritage and strong enough to take on the responsibility of driving Vision 2030 forward. The strong pillars of Nahda’s foundation include a desire to dramatically change the way

children learn and a determination to ensure they have the knowledge and skills required to lead Saudi Arabia in the 21st Century. We believe that it is vital to teach our youngsters, to be proud, knowledgeable, and informed Saudi citizens who are active members of society. Our nation’s future is in their hands, and we want them to roll up their sleeves and claim their roles. The future for our children is probably the most exciting it has ever been; limitless opportunities are being opened up and environments conducive to maximize learning are being created. What is it, then, that we as responsible educators should be offering these children? As members of Nahda Academy, a community of passionate, lifelong learners, we understand the importance of providing our pupils with the skills required to enter the 21st Century with confidence to successfully secure their future paths and careers.

The future for our children is probably the most exciting it has ever been. We need to ensure that each and every one of them is empowered to become a morally responsible and emotionally resilient member of society, who is armored with the highest ethics; a natural result of immersion within our Saudi culture and Islamic values. We are dedicated to providing first -hand experiences, never in isolation but with clear educational purpose and a connection to prior knowledge. As such, our children will develop their sense of curiosity, fuel their creativity, and nurture their inquiring and growing mind. Being emotionally literate, they work collaboratively with a spirit of mutual respect, and a strong belief in moderation, tolerance and respect. These children benefit from a customized, integrated curriculum; a curriculum of much thought and research that will propel our children into the future. Fully equipped for every situation, these active global citizens will benefit from the security of knowing their true identity as Arab Saudis. We therefore immerse our pupils in Saudi history, culture, heritage and traditions. We then link them with their roots, while also giving high emphasis to our Arab identity in all aspects of our school’s daily life and academic program.

EMPOWERING SAUDIS McDonald’s Serves Up Leadership Opportunities Reza Food Services Co. Ltd. is committed to supporting Saudi Arabia’s 2030 Vision, its story of Saudization beginning over 20 years ago. From the start, the company recognized the importance of hiring Saudis and providing youth with employment opportunities.

The McDonald’s system worldwide is an excellent launching pad for any young person looking to kickstart their career, and in Saudi Arabia, it is no different. They have hired thousands of young Saudis over the years and many of them have gone on to become very successful individuals in their own right. Today, McDonald’s branches in the Western & Sothern Regions employ over 1,200 Saudis across all functions of the business, including Operations, Marketing, HR, and Finance. This will continue as the company grows and leads the industry with regards to Saudi employment. 22 SEP/OCT 2018 PROMOTED CONTENT/ MCDONALDS

We offer both international grade training that is offered as part of the McDonald’s system, but we also offer bespoke training programs designed specifically for our Saudi employees looking to develop and grow within our organization,” said a spokesperson for McDonald’s.

“I’M QUITTING UNEMPLOYMENT… FOR A PROMISING CAREER PATH” The Guest Experience Leader (GEL) Program The GEL Program is a newly created position supporting the McDonald’s hospitality culture being entrenched in all its restaurants. The GEL position is just one of many tools they are utilizing to improve and enhance the overall customer

experience in their stores, and is reserved for young Saudi women looking to enter the workforce and be productive in a fast-growing industry. This is just the beginning of their efforts to elevate and expand their Saudization program.

For those who show high potential and demonstrate the right attitude and values, they have programs such as the Fast Track program specifically designed to speed up development and career paths. This program aims to develop a young Saudi from a Manager Trainee position to a store manager position within 24 months, a process which would normally take up to 5 or 6 years.

children ages 4 to 12 with selfdiscovery. These programs are designed to help develop skills and interests your child might gravitate toward as they grow, and also give them a more productive way to utilize their free time once they’re out of school. Some of these programs involve children’s development in both emotional intelligence and verbal skills. They sharpen skills necessary for deeper communication, as the emotional intelligence program looks inward, while verbal skills would project outward. The programs also have more fun and entertainment-based activities, such as MasterChef classes, physical activities, and creative arts, giving your child an outlet to discover latent talents, skills, or simply things they want to do for fun. The Andalusia Clinics have garnered the trust of parents all around Jeddah thanks to their dedication to children’s health from all aspects – physical, dental, mental and creative. More than just a clinic, they are a community that looks out for your child’s well-being in a way that they can also enjoy.

NUGAMSHI Sweeping Contradictions By Jou Pabalate

A man flitted and flounced over a canvas laid on the floor. His movements are impetuous; tempered with swift deliberate strokes. It was marked with purposeful pauses to reload his weapon of choice, a broom, no less drenched in paint as much his thobe. He gives the impression of an artist lost in the moment, in his performance— sheltered from the cacophony of on-lookers through the music blaring through his earphones. There is intimacy in the act of creating, and Nugamshi, grants those who watch him perform privy to his thoughts and identity. 26 SEP/OCT 2018

Present day Riyadh, Nugamshi paints for us one statement over another, creating converging and diverging narratives along the way. Every now and then, his face would draw a pensive stare, seemingly caught in his stream of thoughts. Nugamshi was born in Qurrayat, and spent most of his childhood in Qassim before moving to Riyadh. His interest in calligraphy was first influenced by his teacher, Nasser Al Harbi, who also discovered his talent for the craft. Nugamshi pays homage to the tradition but pivots towards a contemporary approach to calligraphy. He positions his work at the crevice, marrying it with his love for typography. The latter, an interest taken further by Nugamshi as a graphic designer,

working now as a creative director for a private company. Perhaps what makes Nugamshi’s work stand out is its successful meshing of Japanese techniques, graffiti and the act of painting itself—resulting in a captivating visual and performance piece. His use of unconventional materials was part out of necessity and influenced by Niels Shoe Meulman. “I have tremors, my hand shakes, and that is something that normally would be a disadvantage if you are working with a detailed, technique oriented craft like Arabic calligraphy. However, for me, it was not a limitation, it pushed me to go outside the normal and find my way,” Nugamshi said. DESTINATION KSA 27

Nugamshi’s brand of calligraffiti transcends language barriers, the appeal of it is universal, which the artist attributes to the spiritual connection he creates in every performance. His favorite words to create are Her, and Nun.“whenever I perform, I am representing my identity, introducing my language, but at the same time, the experience itself is universal. Foreigners actually appreciate my art more than Arabs.” Nugamshi has taught workshops on the basics and history of calligraffiti at the YourAOK art organization in Kuwait and presented his video installations in the 2016 Sharjah Calligraphy Bienniale. He performed with his Saudi contemporaries in Washington DC last spring. Calligraphy is an art form marked by discipline, mastery, and an obsession with perfection— Nugamshi’s departure from it extends not just in his execution but in his detachment from his art. “I don’t believe in the past, it ties you down. I only believe in the future. The moment I finish an artwork it is no longer part of my present, and so I destroy it,” says the man, who at one point in his life impulsively chose to be homeless in Hong Kong.

The making of the art is akin to a dance. The words I choose are not random, they are words born out of a monologue, expressed to create a dialogue with the audience Nugamshi

28 SEP/OCT 2018

Just when you thought you’ve had Nugamshi read, he throws you a curve. His artistic signature isn’t the medium and tools he chooses, but the calculated chaos and measured impulsivity that characterizes his every move. He is his art, and his art is he: bold and broad, thoughtfulness caught in reckless abandon.

A BRAVE NEW SAUDI By Jou Pabalate

The Kingdom is on the cusp of a new era, marked by rapid changes, and brave thrusts towards the future. We live in exciting times, where the predominantly young generation takes their rightful place as bearers of progress. We see them rising to the challenge of bridging the Kingdom’s rich culture and history with its pursuit of modernity and innovation. This re-imagined reality and promising vision of Saudi Arabia is best represented by its many pioneers and game changers. They are proud of their identity and embrace their humanity. In choosing to blaze trails in their lives, they are crafting the paths of our Kingdom’s future. Each Saudi on the cover has a creative mind, an indomitable will, and a relentless desire to do something greater than themselves. They are a reflection of what Saudi Arabia is today, they are you. KHALID ZAHID Aesthetic Resonance From Sheikhs on carousels capturing the simplicity of faith, car-door winged dolls sparking hope, to a beating dome installation that rendered him the meta pied-piper of Jeddah, Khaled Zahid is a Saudi contemporary artist who knows how to merge concepts and the familiar together, leaving viewers amused and provoked at the same time. Zahid considers himself a messenger, using art to reflect on local social issues defining the current paradigms in the Kingdom. One such example is the “Beginning/End” installation, a deconstructed pump that meditates the past while looking towards a diversified future. Zahid has exhibited in cities like Moscow, New York, and Abu Dhabi. His artworks have been widely circulated on social media. Case in point, his Amal Doll, became the celebratory symbol of choice when the ban on Saudi women’s driving was lifted. The Holy Decibel he unveiled at the Shara exhibition with 34 SEP/OCT 2018

Ali Chaban, caught the attention of international curators, and will soon be shown at the Sharjah Biennale. It cuts through the noise that overshadows Islam by elevating the conversation to an intellectual level that is explored through a multisensory art experience. Zahid does art in a way that doesn’t feed on typical dissidence but rather, inspires overt dialogue, and here lies his ingenuity: “I don’t cross red lines— you need to think smart as an artist. I walk on red lines to bring and lure people in. Their interest rises when they see you doing something that’s on the fringes. The moment you cross it though, you will lose your audience, the art galleries, and the shows.” Khalid Zahid’s work is set to be displayed in major festivals in the region, and will most likely find its way to the art capitals soon. And through him, the world will discover that there’s more to contemplate about Saudi Arabia than meets the eye. KZ_art

You need to be a smart artist, your work needs to be a balance of two things: you should have a strong concept, a shock factor, but delivered beautifully. Khalid Zahid

RAKAN AL ORAIFI Fervour and Flavors “Sometimes, your passion is ignited when you get thrown into the fire, that’s how I discovered mine —I opened a restaurant straight out of college, and one day, I found myself without a cook, and all I could do was put on an apron and brave the heat of the kitchen.” From a down on his luck restaurateur to becoming one of the Saudi chefs to prepare a Saudi lunch for over 5,000 guests at DAVOS, World Economic Forum 2018, there is no doubt that Chef Rakan has come a long way. Long hours, knife cuts, and skating through slippery kitchen floors is what it took for him to be named Best Saudi Chef 2018 by the Saudi Tourism Excellence Awards, and to be nominated in the Middle East Excellence awards this year. And if you asked Chef Rakan, he’s looking forward to more of it: “Passion gets you started, hard work is what moves 36 SEP/OCT 2018

you forward. Being Saudi is part of who I am but we (as Saudis) are more than the word itself, it is important that we represent our culture, for me I do it through food and how I act as a chef. Be professional, be willing to put in the long hours, keep learning. I am honing my techniques— French, Japanese, Chinese, I come in every kitchen to serve good food but I am also there to become better.” This year, Chef Rakan starred in two cooking shows, for an Abu Dhabi channel as well as the recently relaunched Saudi Broadcasting Channel (SBC). Prior to these, he also competed in Top Chef Middle East. Chef Rakan is working towards one day becoming an executive chef, and eventually opening a restaurant with him at its helm. He is currently a Senior Chef De Partie at Four Seasons, Riyadh. raloraifi

Don’t do it for the money, if you do that you will not make it. Cooking requires passion, being a chef needs dedication. It’s not easy, you will start from the bottom, bruises, cuts, burns-- but I can tell you this, it’s worth it. Rakan AlOraifi

She has caught the attention of stylists the world over, and most recently, Jessie J opened her concert in an Arwa Banawi outfit. She comes in with passion, as many do, but then pairs it with a think big strategy— and so, when she says, “our vision is to export Saudi culture”, it’s more than a statement, it’s a prophecy. A penchant to capture what’s real, and an ability to come up with collections that are multi-versed— universal on one hand, unmistakably Arab on 38 SEP/OCT 2018

another, makes her a force for representation. Her style is best described as androgynous, and her successful attempts at designing for pluralistic identities may just be what attracted collaborators to come knocking at her studio’s doors. Adidas Originals paired up with Arwa to create “P.E,”, the first among her contemporaries to do so. The capsule collection consisted of athleisure wear and her signature suits. Levi’s Middle East tapped her to create a customized trucker jacket. At every turn, the persona she designs for is tangible and clearly defined: the modern day creative woman, transcending borders, turning boundaries into silhouettes. “Our Saudi fashion community is growing, it is making a strong case to be recognized as an industry hub in the middle east. I want to be part of this reality, I have always been proud of my roots and in the near future, I want my first flagship store to be in my country. Saudi is cool, we got this.” Web: arwaalbanawi.com

I grew up in a creative household, fashion was part of my childhood. I was heavily influenced by baba’s Versace suits, and mama’s modest couture. I would take all the Sufrat Salat I’d find around the house and drape them over myself, looking at the mirror. I knew this wasn’t child’s play for me, this is who I wanted to be, what I sought to create. Arwa Banawi

His love for reading quickly diversified into a passion for writing. The latter caught the attention of a teacher, who further challenged him in class and gifted him with his very first dictionary. However, instead of jumping into journalism after High School, Al Omran first pursued a degree in Pharmacy at King Saud University, Riyadh to satisfy his father’s wishes. He was one of the first Saudi bloggers in Saudi Arabia whose writing was accessible to an international audience due to its linguistic medium. It remained an outlet for Al Omran throughout his university years. After presenting his diploma to his family, Al 40 SEP/OCT 2018

He spent a year working for NPR, before returning to Saudi Arabia to be a correspondent for the Wall Street Journal. His writing has also appeared in the Guardian, the New York Times, and now he works for the Financial Times. When asked what led him to a path in international journalism, Al Omran replied, “The way Saudi Arabia was being reported on included many examples of poor writing in the post-9/11 period. CULTURE SHOCK An Illustrated Guide to Saudi Arabia

Being Saudi comes with the caveat of answering the silliest questions from others. Fortunately, we are capable of laughing it off and understand where the assumptions come from... Thanks, Hollywood. Here are some common misconceptions you’ll come across when living in Saudi Arabia:

EXPECTATION

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS SAUDI ARABIA? Dubai is in Saudi Arabia, so are the pyramids of Egypt, and Saudi Arabia is in South Asia, everything in the Gulf is Saudi.

REALITY

SAUDI ARABIA AND UAE ARE TWO DIFFERENT COUNTRIES

Saudi Arabia is a separate and independent state in the gulf. We do travel to the UAE, Bahrain, etc. frequently. Saudi Arabia is strategically positioned, we are near Europe, smack in the middle of the middle east, and also adjacent to Africa and near South Asia making it a great home base for travelers. 42 SEP/OCT 2018

EXPECTATION

“YOU DON’T LOOK SAUDI…”

All Saudis are filthy rich, oil barrel hugging, hillbillies and speak like General Abdeen from the Dictator. English is a widely spoken language. Hence, asking ‘how did we learn to speak good English’? What can we say, we like Ameriki cartoons, because yes, we have TVs too.

REALITY

WE COME IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES—COLORS, TOO.

We are diverse, with different personalities and dispositions in life. The thobe and shamagh is the official national dress of men, and when worn properly, looks dapper. Women do wear the abaya, but covering one’s face is not mandatory. You can see modern style statements, mixing and matching between eastern and western fashion. DESTINATION KSA 43

EXPECTATION

ALL WOMEN IN SAUDI ARABIA ARE SECOND CLASS CITIZENS

Here are the search results for women living in Saudi Arabia: Women have no rights, Saudi women need to wait for their man to take them out for a walk, women can’t work, women only wear black.

REALITY

WE RUN THE WORLD, GIRLS!

We don’t deny that in terms of women empowerment we haven’t reached our full potential. However, this does not take away from the efforts that have already been done to put women on an equal playing field. Your life will not end by living in Saudi Arabia. We have gyms, you can now drive, women can go to the cinemas and run whatever errand they need on their own. Saudi women are now holding key positions in the government and taking on executive roles. They are doctors, engineers, artists, scientists, and more. 44 SEP/OCT 2018

EXPECTATION

DOES THE CAMEL PULL YOUR BMW, OR IS IT THE OTHER WAY AROUND?

As the NO. 1 oil exporting country and because of Lawrence of Arabia, we must have our own oil rigs at home, swim in oil, and live in tents. We all drive Bentley’s (on the desert) and have camels running in our backyard with the oil. Our concept of fine dining is so backward, we think fast food is fancy.

REALITY

BEACHES, DESERTS, AND SKYSCRAPERS

Saudi Arabia, as a unified Kingdom, is 88 years old. In this relatively short span of time, its major cities of Riyadh, Jeddah, and Khobar have evolved with the times. We do have deserts and we have outdoor adventures in them especially in winter. Beaches and water sports can be had in the coastal regions. We have buildings and pavements too. Fact: You will come across camels, and we have camel crossing signs. Just like others have deer, cow, and sheep safety signs anywhere else. DESTINATION KSA 45

THE LIBRARIAN OF QATIF Take a leaf out of Ali Al Herz’s book. By Lujain Alheraiqi

“I would have never guessed that it would get this much attention, to be honest.” Ali Al Herz says humbly, referring to his 30,000 collection of books that he has assembled in his very own household. Al Herz, from the city of Qatif, identifies himself as a bibliomaniac, which is defined as love of possessing and collecting books. It is honestly the most beautiful addiction, according to him. He doesn’t only collect books, but also currencies, stamps, ancient documents, newspapers, and magazines. Before his gathering books era, Al Herz grew up in a farming family. His mom was an avid reader, yet his dad was illiterate. His mother, thus, became his first school. Unfortunately, Al Herz’s father passed away so he had to drop out of school to help his mother. Despite being out of school, Al Herz’s love for books grew as he enjoyed reading books of myths and mysteries. Fast forward to the future, a library grew from a seed. He had 3 halls each named after

a Greek philosopher, illustrating his love of philosophy. They are Socrates, Plato, Aristotle; home to thousands of notable and obscure names in the literary world. Although he never thought it would develop this fast, he believes it aligns with Sharqiya’s development and its growing interest in knowledge and books. “Everything starts small then gets bigger. Except for misfortunes, they start big and then get smaller.” Al Herz says, speaking about his library. While he was mentioning the development of his magnificent “garden of curiosity”, I could not help but ask him about the future he sees for his library from now and onwards. Nonetheless, he said that he wants the library to be a back support for future generations and the youth of our beloved country. “I believe my life consists of many stations. Interests can be interchangeable, from literature to history to religions topolitics to novels to anthropology philosophy.” Al Herz enjoys completing collections and being

up to date with leaders in the community. He emphasizes on that by saying, “Usually, for example, if there’s a specific author, I would get all of his books and organize them. Hassan Hanfi for example, and add all his books. Especially if the authors are influential individuals in society.” Nevertheless, he added up his library up to approximately 30,000 books and 100,000 newspapers and magazines, especially ones from previous centuries and with historical value. Like me, you are probably wondering what kind of genre the book expert recommends to the public. “Every person has a personal interest when it comes to reading books, like, a favorite author, but when it comes to me, I find interest in Russian literature and Philosophy.” But he believes in diversifying interests, of course each individual has their favorite genre, but that should not stop them from exploring new fields. Al Herz speaks of this matter and says, “I have a lot of visitors. Delegations from the country and outside of it. Students. Cultural/ DESTINATION KSA 51

knowledge events and forums. Europe. Different countries. India and Africa. I do not want my library to be just a personal one, but also a public one where different people can benefit from it and share the knowledge. As I have been named before as a cultural/knowledge guide.” Did Al Herz read all of his books? He answers this question with, “No, unfortunately, there is no way for one human to read this many books in a lifetime. Also, my library includes some dictionaries. And with novels, you have to read it from beginning (suspense) to (problem) end (solution).” So it would be a disgrace to put a book down when you are not even done with it yet. He read almost no less than 70% he has read or went over. Especially when he was 14, he ended up memorizing Arabic literature. He read not less than 8 to 10 hours. Al Herz’s advice to those interested in reading is that, “Reading is a wide sea, every individual must practice this exercise. It is like working out, but for the brain. You need to work out physically just as much as you need to do so mentally.” Also, a way to make this new generation more knowledgeable. Al Herz indicates that, “This generation is in fact fond of reading. I recommend students to visit libraries and bookstores more, because it’d plant a seed of love and curiosity for reading when you’resurrounded by books. A lot of book lovers started off that way.” 52 SEP/OCT 2018

SUBCULTURE IS THE NEW CULTURE Breaking fashion stereotypes By Ali Cha'aban

There’s a new wave of street fashion being embraced both internationally and locally, giving people more room for selfexpression through their unique style. We speak to some of our favorite up-and-coming style icons about how this subculture is taking over.

TURKI AL HARBI Founder of Saudi Swag and street fashion influencer Turki Al Harbi speaks to those who are not afraid to be bold, stand out, and lead change. “This younger crowd is brave, more open to expressing individuality. They will lead the fashion industry and introduce a depth to street fashion and the art of fashion,” Turki says. According to him, Saudi Arabia’s prior focus on traditional dress codes and casual wear is a huge factor to our struggle for self-expressionism. “It’s been changing gradually, and I’m optimistic that with our attention to street fashion, we can bring it to a whole new level of selfexpressionism and streetwear.” DESTINATION KSA 55

MAZIN MAIMANI Art director Mazin Maimani takes notice of how Saudis have moved from ‘safe’ followers of trends or major brand names, to combining street style pieces with wellestablished designer items. “More than society embracing self-expressionism, people in

fashion are themselves learning to embrace different styles, appreciating the fact that we don’t all have to be following the same style or have the same taste,” Mazin says. “For a while, fashion in Saudi was categorized as either right and wrong – but there’s no right or wrong in fashion!” DESTINATION KSA 63

GASTRONOMIC INDULGENCE At Pampas and Aubergine

At Assila, a Rocco Forte Hotel, on Jeddah's Tahliya Street, top chefs are serving divine dishes that take guests on epicurean adventures. Two of the hotel’s dining addresses are elevating the scene in the city; with Pampas making a mark as the finest Argentinian restaurant in the city, and Aubergine raising the bar for oriental cuisine.

PAMPAS The Argentine Experience The journey begins the moment your eyes fall upon the restaurant’s dark wood and leather interiors; touches of Argentinian culture surround you through the

artworks and warm décor. Pampas team provides Assila's signature service paired with lively Argentinian hospitality; creating a welcoming and vibrant ambience. The floor to ceiling windows allow for lively evening affairs, promising breathtaking city views from the 17th floor to accompany your dining experience. The menu inspires guests with grilled meats, the freshest produce meticulously plated to perfection—something to excite both families and business diners. A private room is also available, providing guests a choice for intimate gatherings, or a bespoke corporate dining experience.

68 SEP/OCT 2018 PROMOTED CONTENT/ ROCCO FORTE HOTELS

At Pampas’s helm is head chef Lucas Farias, whose culinary repertoire consists of his hometown favorites elevated to fine dining standards befitting of Assila Hotel. Expect to feast on high quality cut steaks, succulent specials like the Pampas Mixed Grill, and a variety of meats and fish prepared on an open Asado Grill. Culinary fanatics are sure to approve of Chef Farias’s personal recommendation: The Great Selection, a plate consisting of both hot and cold foie gras. This creation will satisfy discerning palates, with its clever play on texture, temperature, and flavors.

AUBERGINE Revised Classics On the 20th floor of Assila Hotel is Aubergine, a rooftop terrace restaurant that invites guests to escape the buzzing city life below. This Mediterranean haven, led by Chef Firas Zaben, revives traditional Levantine cuisine with a contemporary twist. Contrary to popular belief; Levantine cuisine is far more complex than meat skewers and lamb chops. As Aubergine reintroduces the Levant culture, Chef Zaben’s menu is the familiar done better, experimenting with flavor profiles and utilizing new culinary techniques. One of which is the mango tabbouleh—an in house creation that uses the sweetness of mangos to complement the sourness of tabbouleh. The result is a salad with an unexpected piquancy that works. Another must-try plate is the Levant Caprese, which replaces the usual Mozarella cheese with the Levantine favorite, halloumi. This dish will appease both eyes and taste buds, with an aerated halloumi that would eventually envelope the salad with a thin layer of cheese. Delectable does not begin to describe the culinary stars of Assila Hotel. The serene but lively atmosphere of its restaurants from daylight to sundown is perfect for business diners, families, or even just a group of friends. In a city where the word “luxury dining” is haphazardly used,

Pampas and Aubergine set themselves apart by being iconic standards in the scene. And for that alone, Assila Hotel rightfully earns its place as the ultimate luxury dining destination.

Connecting with Kenya

In a fast paced life, where our world is transforming into a cyber one, we tend to lose touch with life, nature, one another, and eventually, ourselves. One of the best ways for one to reconnect with himself is through new experiences, and what a better way to do so, than to experience traveling. “I never liked to travel as a tourist. I like to have a main objective while I still get a chance to see the country”, that’s how Rayyan Abdulwahed decided to change the traditional perception of traveling, to an unconventional one. It all started during Rayyan’s first year of Dental School in Jordan. Not wanting to be restrained with the idea of him being a typical, busy dentistry student, he wanted to step away from the average, and be his own kind of unique. Traveling in-between semesters was what he opted for. Thus, he took his first solo trip to Spain, he stayed with a Spanish family, and learned the language, to truly experience the Spanish culture; “my mother was a big motivation to me. She’s the one who made me love languages”.

After coming back, Rayyan couldn’t wait for his next adventure. He took a 5-week trip to France while staying with a French family. “I was the first Muslim, Arab, Saudi they have ever accommodated” although he faced some barriers in the beginning, he realized that it was caused by the lack of Arab travelers. This incident made him want to introduce other nations to our culture. Rayyan traveled to Kenya through a volunteering organization after, where he volunteered at an orphanage for 2 weeks, and taught English, and it was a transformational experience to him, “I saw a part of Kenya that tourists don’t get to see. There were people living in between mountains of garbage; and that really struck a chord with me” he explained with a hint of sorrow on his face. Reflecting back on his trip, Rayyan didn’t believe that he made a significant change, to him, he only provided temporary entertainment for children. Henceforth, after obtaining his bachelor’s degree in Dental Surgery, he traveled to Cambodia for a month; wanting to achieve a purpose beyond just traveling. Through a volunteering organization for professionals, he reached there as a dentist, treating orphans and HIV+ children. Unfortunately, Rayyan faced some challenges while treating patients, due to the limited supplies provided. His time in Cambodia consisted of performing dentistry in the morning, teaching English at a school in the afternoon, and exploring what the country had to offer during the weekends. 76 SEP/OCT 2018

Rayyan then started a post graduate specialization program in Advanced General Dentistry in Riyadh, and during his first residency break, he traveled to China and stayed at a Buddhist monastery for almost a month, living without electricity, eating vegan food, practicing Kung Fu, Tai Chi, and meditation. Rayyan loves instilling the culture of unconventional traveling and experiencing new things, hence, he took his brothers to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Kenya, then they went backpacking in Zanzibar. “I wanted my younger brothers to experience unconventional traveling, and it did kick start something within them”. There were no post-graduation plans; but his passion to give back to the world lead him to Greece for 3 months with only a backpack, while he volunteered as a dentist through HealthPoint Foundation at dozens of refugee camps. He spoke Arabic, English, Spanish and French, and wasn’t only a dentist, but also a coordinator between patients and other volunteers. We all know that the refugee crisis is painful, what we see on news and social media is completely different than being at a camp, seeing, talking and treating them, it was a challenging experience to Rayyan, but worthwhile.

The refugee crisis in ongoing, and unfortunately only getting worse. If you feel like you can help out, don’t over think it. There are countless ways to lend a helping hand. Rayyan Abdulwahid

With an unplanned destination next, Rayyan decided to travel to Colombia, and the most affordable way for him then to catch a flight to Colombia, was to fly from Romania. “I was moving based on feelings. It’s nice to have the freedom of choice, no obligations, enjoying my own company, and not worrying about what’s next”. He took a bus from Greece and traveled to Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Romania for a week, and finally, flew to Colombia. Rayyan spent an average of 4 days at each country, enjoying their history, and many beautiful experiences. Rayyan was lucky enough to get introduced to the people and the culture. In Colombia, everyone was welcoming so he stayed for 2 months. Thereafter a month and a half in Ecuador came next, climbing a volcano for 8 hours, hiking in the amazon, and almost getting bit by a snake, were only snippets of what Rayyan experienced there.

The joys of volunteering 78 SEP/OCT 2018

After, he took a bus to Peru for a 2 months stay, then another bus to Bolivia. According to Rayyan, if you want good coffee, chocolate and Spanish lessons, it is the place to be. Three months in Chile follows, where he experienced paragliding; hiking, camping, and stargazing in Argentina, then he accidentally visited Brazil during Carnival. Before saying goodbye to his journey on backpacking through the world, Rayyan visited the US and UK before going back to Greece and volunteer for 2 months; it was a great ending to a 15 month journey. “How do

I put it in words... I guess I’m an adventurous person, I do get bored easily,” chuckling, “but I like to finish whatever I started, before jumping to the next thing.”

Traveling on a budget tips and tricks from Rayyan 1. Practice common sense, be realistic with where you want to go, and know your budget. 2. Backpack, it’s easier to move around, and teaches you to be minimalistic 3. Stay at hostels, but don’t go too cheap. You can also try couchsurfing. 4. Transportation? it’s time to take buses! Hitchhiking is free too, but you have to be cautious. Web: thewanderingscrubs.com rayyan.abd1

Investing in women-led startups, from Saudi Arabia to Silicon Valley Spark, San Francisco’s largest community of young philanthropists invested in gender equality, and Blossom, the first accelerator for female founders in Saudi Arabia, recently partnered on Invested, a women & entrepreneurship empowerment event, to both inspire and equip the next generation of female leaders. “Female founders received only 2% of venture capital (VC) dollars in 2017, and only 9% 82 SEP/OCT 2018

of venture capitalists in the US are women,” explains Amanda Brock, the Executive Director of Spark, stressing on the need to support even more women in the tech world. Invested set out to give female Saudi students across California access to tools, networks, and resources that would help them succeed with their big ideas. The attendees met with and heard directly from women

who have been changing the entrepreneurship game globally. The event featured dynamic, educational and confidenceboosting TED-style talks, mentorship opportunities from leaders in the field, and strategic networking activities with founders, funders, tech giants, and leading accelerators and incubators from Silicon Valley and the Arab world. Speakers included Caitlin Crosby, Founder and CEO of The Giving Keys; Shannon Spanhake, Founder and CEO of Cleo; Brittany Davis, Director of Deal Flow at Backstage Capital; Tasneem Sabri, Co-Founder of Vela and Senior Program Manager at TechWadi; as well as Abdulrahman Al Turjuman, Section Head of Marketing at SEDCO Holding. Emon Shakoor, the CEO and Founder of Blossom and one of the youngest Saudi entrepreneurs in the Kingdom, expressed her excitement and optimism for Invested, and many more events like it to come. “One of the first and best ways I learned about entrepreneurship was through an event in California. It was the best event of my life; it changed everything for me,” she said. Spark and Blossom are not alone in their mission to prop up current and future female leaders and entrepreneurs from Saudi Arabia. They received tremendous support from sponsors including Google, Silicon Valley Bank, Nour Nouf, SEDCO Holding’s Rowad Riyali, Beauti, Trinet, Saudis in USA, and SACM.

Shakoor confidently affirms, “Today, 70% of Saudi Arabia’s population is under the age of 34. There are more Saudi women graduating college, more Saudi women starting businesses, and research shows that the most successful companies have at least one female founder on the team. This year, Saudi women are not only driving cars, they are driving economies and are paving the way for Saudi Arabia’s future.” Web: blossomsmena.com blossom_mena DESTINATION KSA 83
