SPARTAN RACE Aroo! Aroo! Aroo! Extreme obstacle racing comes to Jeddah. By Jana Bawazeer

Jeddah’s first Spartan Race sprinted right into a sunny Saturday morning, bright and early at the conventionally sleepy hour of 9 a.m. But the atmosphere in King Abdullah Sports City was anything but quiet. Thousands of Jeddahwis poured into the space to take part and join the fun. Participants braced a lengthy and impressive race that included 20 challenging obstacles such as nostalgic monkey bars, an impressive tunnel, and a tricky fun ropeclimbing challenge. For five kilometers, all the participants were fed a healthy dose of 12 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2017

fun and camaraderie. Heats could be run in teams, so as to capitalize on the true purpose of the race: recreation, rather than competition. The fun was by no means exclusive to adults! Children could hop, skip, run, crawl and climb their way through their very own fun Jeddah Juniors race. Needless to say, it was an ideal way to exploit the excess energy that they were gifted with. The successful event was organized extremely well, with obvious emphasis on safety and security.

WHAT IS OBSTACLE COURSE RACING?

Meet the Winners

Although much of race required a lot of work, those who signed up ranged from curious beginners to seasoned athletes. Everyone who crossed the finish line took home a participation medal, and top participants were recognized on the Spartan website.

Three people in particular took home bragging rights and were awarded with prizes. Ivan Gromicho, John Gittings and Giuseppe Merlino took home the top three in the Open Sprint category, while the Elite Sprint saw Hallvard Borsheim, Ail Saeed and Hamad Aziaf in the top three.

Obstacle course racing (OCR), a sport that has enjoyed exponential growth worldwide, aims to challenge the participants’ athletic determination through subjecting them to multiple obstacles. The obstacles usually include activities like

jumping over fire, climbing up walls, throwing a spear: the possibilities are essentially endless. Dedicated sportsmen report viewing a positive mental, rather than purely physical, shift in themselves as a result of continued OCR training.

An Enthusiastic Audience

COURTESY PHOTO

Thousands of spectators came to the event to cheer on their family and friends taking part. There was excitement and hardline sportsmanship humming through the entire venue, courtesy of the crowds, the food, and the music wafting across the stadium. For those who didn’t run the obstacle course, there were a lot of activities and games to enjoy, which resulted in some sweet prizes. Both local

and international businesses made sure to contribute to the experience, with G-Shock, Brainfreeze, and Cup & Couch notably in attendance. The entire event was a refreshing departure from the conventionally laid-back and generally relaxed lifestyle that Jeddah has become known for. Novelty energized the crowds and the participants, and it also prompted people hang around for the entire day.

Spartan Race is just one of the many events being initiated by the General Sports Authority (GSA) to jumpstart its goal of creating a healthier and happier KSA. Expect more this year! Read more about the GSA on page 28

MAJED AL HOKAIR A LEGACY OF FUN

A commitment to entertainment in the Kingdom.

18 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2017

We could have gone into the business of real estate or land development, but it lacked the human element. It lacked the community aspect. — Majed Al Hokair

We sat down with Al Hokair Group’s Vice Chairman, Majed Al Hokair, to discuss his family’s commitment to entertainment in Saudi Arabia. When I was growing up, the name Al Hokair was synonyms with fun. Driving past the colorful façade of Al Hokair Land on Riyadh’s Eastern Ring Road, the urge to jump out the car and run inside would’ve been overwhelming if it weren’t for the fact that eminent death is a direct result of jumping out of moving vehicles. On a recent visit, my DCraised niece Norah claimed that Riyadh is better than DC because we have Minopolis and Sparky’s. Over a generation later, and the Al Hokair name is still associated with fun. Founded in 1975, the group set its sights on becoming the nation’s pioneer in entertainment. They dipped their feet into the proverbial entertainment pool with a park that only had three rides. The entertainment scene at that time was practically nonexistent. This was the first endeavor of its kind in the country. “We had an influx of people coming to the park, from

royalty to everyday people.” The reception this little threeride park garnered pushed the company to invest more in the field. “We partnered with Italian companies to import more games. Now we have over 75 entertainment centers throughout the Kingdom,” said Al Hokair. Al Hokair’s father, Abdulmohsin, was always, as his son put it, “nontraditional.” He has always sought to take the path least traveled. He wanted to pursue things that were related to the community. “We could have gone into the business of real estate or land development, but it lacked the human element. It lacked the community aspect.” What makes this group special is its reach. Al Hokair doesn’t settle for just being in places like Riyadh, Jeddah or Sharqiya, but aims for true widespread presence by investing in smaller cities throughout the country. In the late ‘80s, the group expanded into hospitality. If you’re wondering how successful that endeavor was, we’ll answer you with a question. Have you ever stayed in any incarnation of a Hilton, DESTINATIONKSA.COM 19

Holiday Inn, Novotel, Golden Tulip or a Radisson in Saudi Arabia? If your answer is yes, you, my friend, are also connected to Al Hokair. They have two decades worth of experience and over 40 hotels. “They say a child is connected to Al Hokair from their very beginnings to adulthood. This became our strategy.”

Al Hokair’s vision is to curate a person’s entire experience; from the moment you land, everything from transportation, accommodation, entertainment and even sightseeing. And it looks like Al Hokair is closer to that aim than ever. The launch of their Riyadh red bus tours have been causing quite the stir in the capital, and just so happens to tick the last box: sightseeing. When it comes to the company’s future, Al Hokair is keeping up with the trends in entertainment. With the knowledge that the majority of the country’s demographic is young, Al Hokair is catering to who we, up to recently, liked to call the neglected middle 20 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2017

children of Saudi: too old for the rides but too young for soap operas. “The young generation needs outlets, and needs companies to start considering them.” They’re combining entertainment and physical activity to combat idleness with projects like Sky Zone in Riyadh and Jeddah or Snowy Forest in Dammam, Jeddah, Madinah, Jizan and Riyadh. Al Hokair also sees potential in the Kingdom becoming a health destination and a go-to spot for natural tourism. Many Saudis travel aboard to countries such as the Czech Republic for rehabilitation and treatment, a trend Al

Hokair is hoping to curb by establishing rehabilitation centers within the Kingdom. They’re also investing in nature tourism to share the countries beauty, as well as rekindling national pride. “We hope for more growth, more options, resilience, variety and longevity,“ explained Al Hokair. He states that those qualities are going to be their anchor in the changing face of the Kingdom. “In Riyadh especially with the completion of the metro, we’re going to see drastic shift both economically and socially.” And no one else is more prepared for it than them.

THE EVOLUTION OF Saudi Arabia is about to get a lot more fun! With big productions like Cirque du Soleil and the Lion King set to take place in Saudi Arabia in the coming months, and potential events that will bring in big names like Oprah and Al Pacino, the entertainment industry is going through major changes. Since the General Entertainment Authority (GEA) was created in May 2016, it’s held multiple successful events, but it has an even more ambitious plan for 2017.

When asked his favorite part of his job, he gives an unexpected and thoughtful answer. Pictures – in particular selfies – and family photo albums are what fuels his passion. “A picture is worth a thousand words and it really makes for a great return on all our investment when we see a happy family taking a selfie, laughing and leaving with great memories,” said Al Madani.

MEET THE CEO OF THE GEA Most days, Amr Al Madani, the CEO of the Authority, arrives at his office in Riyadh before 8 a.m. and doesn’t leave until after 8 p.m. That is, on the days he’s not traveling to every corner of the country in search of event planners and performers. Al Madani is a busy man; he oversees day-to-day operations and hears reports from every department within the GEA. He explains that his goal isn’t only to plan events, but to put smiles on faces.

“It gives us hope that our ambition of having more pictures in our photo albums from Saudi Arabia than from elsewhere in the world is a possibility.” Photo albums are filled with scenes of vacations outside the country because in the past, families were forced to cross the border in search of fun. But with the GEA busy planning comedy shows, festivals and concerts in more than 20 cities in the Kingdom, the hope is residents will stay put to be entertained. Proud of what’s been achieved in such a short time, Al Madani explains that more than 150,000 people attended GEA events in just the last few months. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 23

VISION 2030 The General Entertainment Authority is closely linked to one of Vision 2030’s key goals: “To provide cultural and entertainment opportunities to the public, to support local talent and develop projects that will generate job opportunities and grow our economy.”

The GEA's events don’t only generate fun, but also generate money. Under Vision 2030, a clear target has been set to double household spending on recreational opportunities, bumping it up to 6 percent by 2030. For Al Madani, the math is simple. “If they are spending money at home on entertainment, rather than abroad, then that will boost our economy.” As Al Madani points out, if the GEA continues to attract interest and investment from international companies, it'll boost Saudi’s economy and improve its business image globally. Expanding the industry will also translate to more jobs.

One of the GEA’s most recent successful events was Saudi Arabia’s first Comic Con. The event, which featured top international celebrities from popular shows like

JEDDAH MARCH 2017 2017 24 DESTINATION RIYADH

Game of Thrones and Hannibal, was very well attended. Other events include the iLuminate show, an Arab’s Got Talent show, music concerts, and a show featuring Fluffy the comedian.

Follow @Roznamah_sa on Twitter to see the calendar of events and daily announcements from the General Authority of Entertainment.

Although not all events for 2017 have been announced, those that have been are impressive, including a production of Tom & Jerry, the Lion King, and Sesame Street. Other events like unique markets, Monster Truck shows, gamer’s events and poetry nights are all on the calendar too. When asked about the possibility of a movie theater and a big amusement park in the near future, Al Madani wasn’t able to answer directly. He did confirm that protecting and respecting Saudi’s cultural heritage is very important to his team. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 25

“A lot of people in the Kingdom are interested in live theater and concerts. When we leave the Kingdom, we can see shows, but it would be great to be able to see them in our home country.”

“Like many people here, I’d love to see movie theaters open up in the country!”

26 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2017

“I work in the fashion industry in KSA, so I’d like to see more emphasis on fashion, in particular, a Fashion Week event.”

“As a director, I want to see some kind of union or guild for directors that can help me grow and can protect my rights.”

“I think Saudi Arabia is ready for a huge amusement park, like Six Flags!”

“I’m a cyclist, so I’d like to see more cycling paths throughout Saudi Arabia to encourage more people to try cycling and have a safe space to do it.”

When the MP first rolled up its sleeves to start the work, it conducted the first comprehensive study of 10,700 people on sports and physical activity in the country. It was found that Saudi Arabia pales in comparison to other societies. Seventy percent

Changing an entire society’s mindset towards physical activity is a challenge the General Sports Authority has taken on and is fully committed to. The Mass Participation Program (MP), established under the authority’s umbrella, has been creating a strategy to engage the public and build opportunities for residents to lead more active lifestyles.

of the population (ages 15+) admitted to not have engaged in sports or physical activity in the last month and only 13 percent were considered to be living an active lifestyle based on a 30-minutes weekly benchmark. A lot of health issues today are related to inactivity and very poor lifestyle habits. Aligned with Vision 2030, the main initiatives are divided into eight pillars: Schools and universities, community sports groups, private partnerships, municipalities, mass participation events, community-focused coaching and volunteering, communication campaigns, and insights and monitoring.

RECENT ACTIVITIES COMMUNITY SPORTS GROUPS One of the biggest undertakings of the program is to help foster and sustain community sports groups. The first and largest database of groups from all regions has been established, allowing people to find out what options are available, which is hoped to grow further. Groups that were traditionally hard to track down are now readily available, thanks to the MP. To discover other enthusiasts of a particular sport, simply search the hashtag: ‫ مجتمع_صحي_رياضي‬# The MP offers support to new groups and provides them with assistance to get started, conduct activities and increase membership.

PNU, THE ACTIVITY HUB FOR WOMEN Acknowledging that women in Saudi Arabia are eager to get more active, the MP is working on a program at

Princess Nourah University (PNU) that will see various facilities activated in the university. PNU and the General Sports Authority signed a memorandum of understanding to ensure the support of women’s participation in physical activity. Female gyms, outdoor facilities and sports events are all part of the partnership to provide an example for leading an active lifestyle for women.

EVENTS In a short amount of time, the MP has already managed to shake up the social scene of Saudi Arabia and inspire people to pursue healthier activities. The recently concluded Spartan Races in Riyadh and Jeddah are just a sample of what’s in store, with more to come in 2017.

This presents a compelling contrast to the more Arabcentric exhibitions that took place within The Mall and The Home, allowing for an even more multidimensional perspective on the concept of safar, in what allowed it to range from the personal to the literal.

safar as a Theme Beyond the artwork, the initiative successfully capitalized on the theme by appearing in galleries and spaces across Jeddah.

By Jana Bawazeer

The first of February saw the launch of the fourth edition of the annual 21,39 event, operating within the Saudi Art Council’s creative direction. Artwork carefully curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath successfully meshed traditional and contemporary, in a move that mirrors Jeddah’s spirit and commits to the general theme: safar, which means travel in Arabic. The theme puts emphasis on the multilayered notion of travel and the process of discovery it entails.

DECADES OF

ARTWORK Syrian artist finds new inspiration in Jeddah. By Caroline Hillier

For most of his career, Monzer Charaby found inspiration in the colorful streets, charming people and rich history of his hometown of Aleppo, Syria. But after moving to Jeddah, he’s found new inspiration – and has gained new admirers – in Saudi Arabia. Fascinated by history and old architecture, Charaby was immediately drawn to Al Balad. 34 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2017

“When I walk into an old city, I feel as if I’ve taken a time machine and walked into the past,” said Charaby. “I put my hand up and touch the stones because it gives me joy, knowing that for thousands of years, men worked on building this. I enjoy everything that men made with passion, especially old architecture.” After nearly 50 years of painting scenes of Aleppo’s famous historic areas and figures, Charaby’s focus began to shift to Jeddah’s old city.

Upcoming Exhibition: Marahil (Stages)

Since moving to Jeddah in 2012, Charaby held two exhibitions and was overwhelmed with the positive response.

ARTIST PHOTO/CAROLINE HILLIER

His upcoming exhibition, Marahil (meaning “stages” in Arabic) is particularly special because it chronicles his long career by featuring artwork he’s created over five decades. Those who attend the exhibit will be provided with the opportunity to learn

about Charaby’s unique artistic approach and background. “My fellow artists here in Jeddah didn’t know my work before 2012. Artists often ask me what stages I went through before I grew into the artist I am today. This exhibit allows me to show them.”

Monzer Charaby’s show, Marahil, opens at Nesma Art Gallery in Al Rawdah on March 12 and runs until March 21.

Looking back at his older paintings, like the ones depicting professions that are not common anymore, like shoe makers and copper cleaners, Charaby is reminded of his early days as a painter. “When I look back, I feel happy. Ever since I was a student, people showed a great appreciate for my work because it touches them. I’m happy people still react the same today.”

MADEHA AL AJROUSH Scratching the Surface

An interview with the Saudi photographer behind the book “Resurface.” By Jou Pabalate

They say that beauty lies in every turn for those who dare to delve just beneath the surface. Indeed, for Madeha Al Ajroush, a passionate seeker of people’s narratives and a believer of the strong history the Kingdom has, it meant traveling for five years deep into Saudi Arabia’s many deserts in order to capture and document its hidden treasure: petroglyphs. 36 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2017

Despite her successful professional life, Al Ajroush has somehow found the time to pursue her passion for photography. Make no mistake, she knows her way around her camera; in fact, she is considered to be one of the very first Saudi commercial photographers in the city.

Al Ajroush has met wonderful people from different tribes in the Kingdom through her lens and adventures.

Her fascination has always been deconstructing the human psyche and condition. She is after all, one of the leading psychotherapists in the Kingdom. With a private practice that has considerably helped society while attempting to raise the level of awareness, she managed to debunk societal stigmas.

And now, the Columbian University alumnus has completed her third photography book, entitled, “Resurface.” The book focuses on the presence of female imagery in its historical rock art depiction and context. Al Ajroush would find herself traversing and hiking on weekends with Suzan Al Mutawa over the course of

three years, attempting to document and photograph the rocks. The book captures imagery that may have otherwise become forgotten. And because of that, we are given the opportunity to inquire, investigate and decode the meaning behind these works. Web: madeha-alajroush.com Email: madehaalajroush@gmail.com madehaAlajrous

She is also quite the community advocate. At 62, Al Ajroush has been at the helm of various nationwide projects - from being one of the core founders of a local organization helping people dealing with domestic abuse

to helping train trainers to deal with post-trauma cases of displaced Syrian refugees.

My first experience shooting was at a cousin’s wedding and that was a major flop. I didn’t know until the rolls of films were developed that all the prints were black. That’s when I decided to properly take a course on photography in the US. I’ve gone from that wedding to eventually finding my work on Riyadh’s billboards.

Along with sand blowing around from the wind, there’s a buzz in the air at Trio Ranch Country Club. Over the loudspeaker, an announcer calls on the next riders to climb on their horses and head to the course. The few stands are filled, as they usually are for a show jumping competition. But there’s one special, and perhaps intimidating, person in the audience: Dalma Malhas. Malhas, the first Saudi female to compete in an Olympics event, didn’t only make headlines for competing, but for taking home a bronze medal. When she made the podium in 2010 at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, she made history books too. “I move around a lot, but this will always be home. It’s nice to come back to where it all started - kind of like a walk down memory lane,” said Malhas, on a brief trip to Jeddah, from her base in France.

Top trainers and specialized professionals from Europe visit Trio Ranch, where yearly memberships are available. There are also five tennis courts, a basketball court, a café and more.

DESTINATIONKSA.COM 39

Early Beginnings In 1990, before Malhas was born, her mother Arwa Mutabagani opened Trio Ranch, one of Saudi’s first riding clubs. As a young girl, Mutabagani spent summers riding in Europe, and when she returned home, she questioned why there wasn’t a proper riding club. So, with support from her parents, she opened the ranch. She also competed as a show jumper in Europe, despite many challenges.

Dalma Malhas at the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympics.

Even today, show jumping competitions like this are a rare sight in Saudi Arabia, which is ironic, because as Mutabagani points out, Arabia is the land of horses.

Arwa Mutabagani was appointed as the first female board member of the Saudi Equestrian Foundation and is an an official show jumping judge in Italy.

“Arabian horses bred in this land. Horses are so important to our history. Arabs fought and commuted on them,” said Mutabagani.

Passing on the Passion Malhas started lessons at age four. When her mom saw her potential, they moved to Europe, to not miss out on opportunities like Mutabagani did as a young Saudi Arabian female rider. Mutabagani continued to manage Trio Ranch from afar, dedicated to giving young riders proper training and important life lessons. “The sport is not only about horses. You need to have respect for horses and for the people who work with them. You have to be patient and disciplined, qualities also important for daily life,” said Mutabagani. 40 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2017

Arwa Mutabagani

The Road to the Olympics In 2008, Mutabagani was appointed as the first female member of the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee. Two years later, emotional and wired with excitement, Mutabagani jumped up and down in a crowded audience as she watched her daughter win a much deserved bronze medal at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. “The greatest moment of my life is when Dalma won the bronze medal. History was made and that was her day,” said Mutabagani. Knowing it was her daughter’s day, she couldn’t help but share the pride. “It was really my dream come true through her. I had the dream to participate in an Olympic event, but in my time, as a woman, that was impossible. For me, it was sort of my medal, through my daughter.” In 2012, at the London Olympics, Mutabagani made sports history once again, when she led the first ever group of Saudi females at an Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. When Mutabagani and the two female athletes marched into the stadium waving their green Saudi flags, the enthusiasm from the crowd put Mutabagani on a high. The one disappointment was that her daughter couldn’t march with her, as an injured horse meant she couldn’t compete in the Olympics as she was supposed to.

More Hurdles to Jump Over Mutabagani spends much of her time in Europe focusing on another passion, which is breeding horses. When asked her next goal, she jokes she still may make her Olympics dream come true, mentioning that the oldest Olympian to win a gold medal was 64. A little more reserved, Malhas doesn’t reveal her own goals, but agrees that the Olympic Games is every athlete’s goal. “It was an honor to represent my country,” said Malhas.

“As an athlete, during the whole journey, you try to recreate those moments - they are really special and what keeps you going.” Another big driver for Malhas is her mother, who doesn’t only serve as a role model for her daughter, but for all daughters in Saudi Arabia. “Growing up with a reference point like her has helped me in so many ways. I’m really lucky to have her,” said Malhas. Trio Ranch Country Club

HAIRCARE REMEDIES They’re easy and they make all the difference. By Amal Murad

Taking care of your hair starts with NOT washing it everyday. To wash, choose a shampoo that is plantbased and has more natural ingredients such as almond, argan, coconut and vitamins. Unfiltered water can damage your hair, and the climate here

dehydrates your scalp and hair causing dullness and tangles. You can easily fix that by rinsing it with filtered water before you leave the shower. Also, cold water can add a refreshing and shining touch to your hair. You'll step out of the shower feeling refreshed.

MY HAIR IS DRY AT EDGES AND OILY AT ROOTS That is a sign that you need to watch over your diet by eliminating junk food and sugar. Try shampoo without conditioner; apply a few drops of non-sticky rich serum, such as argan or macadamia on your hair, avoiding the roots. Also use a hair mask once a week to moisturize your hair. The hair mask should include avocado, almond or aloe vera.

STAFF PHOTO/MOHAMED FAWZY

Honey is great too, for an extra shine.

I HAVE DANDRUFF

MY HAIR IS CURLY

Olive oil, coconut oil and apple cider vinegar solutions are the best natural way to get rid of dandruff. Apply it to your scalp using finger tips, 20 minutes before your shower, and wash your hair once a week only with anti-dandruff shampoo.

Curly hair needs to be washed using 100 percent sulfate-free shampoo. If your hair is curly, brush it during your shower to maintain its natural curls.

In general, taking care of your hair needs a balanced diet, a silky pillowcase and a really suitable shampoo. It works for all kinds of hair, every time.

Drying curly hair is the trick to maintaining the curls. Simply wrap your hair with a towel and very gently give it a few rubs and apply a natural cream (not oil replacement treatment). Try almond or coconut oil based products.

A daily wash can cause your scalp more dryness and therefore more dandruff.

• INVEST IN PROPER TOOLS Who doesn’t want to use a fancy razor and finish off with a cool wooden horse hair brush?

• AVOID TRIMMING YOUR BEARD WHILE WET Wet hair isn’t the same length as dry hair and you may unintentionally over trim.

We Recommend: Get an electric beard trimmer. Complete sets with combs and brushes are available at Xtra, Nahdi and Whites Pharmacy.

• STYLE YOUR BEARD ACCORDING TO YOUR FACE SHAPE, NOT WHAT OTHERS ARE DOING The good thing about facial hair is that it grows back relatively quickly; so don’t be afraid to experiment until you get the right look.

• WASH YOUR BEARD. YES, WASH YOUR BEARD

• USE BEARD OIL! IT’S A PROVEN CHANGE-MAKER

Beard hair is different than the hair on your head. Try using a conditioner to help soften coarse hairs. Razor bump relief can make a huge difference too.

Moisturizing your skin is also a good step towards healthy facial hair; so when you’re moisturizing your beard, don’t skip your face.

1. Teriyaki Soba with Sirloin Beef Wagamama This one is easily one of my absolute favorites. At Wagamama, the soba noodles were topped with thin slices of tender sirloin beef. Mangetout, bok choi and beansprouts in teriyaki oil add texture to the otherwise smoothness of the noodles and soft texture of the beef. The ambiance at this casual dining restaurant made the entire experience marvelous. Location: Tahlia Walkway (Mamsha) Tel: +966-12-6110019 Price: SR 79

2. Pad Thai with Vegetables Asia Box’s Pad Thai was the first noodles I tried for this roundup, and it’s easily one of the best ones on the list. Rich with flavor, the silken flat rice noodles coil perfectly around the crunchy stir-fried vegetables, egg and tofu. We Recommend: Stir in some of the spicy sauce provided for a zestier experience. FIGURING OUT FOOD LABELS Use nutrition facts to make informed choices about food. By Laura Khalil

These tips and tricks will help you make an informed choice on whether a food product is healthy or not. It is important to note that food products are all different depending on the food category they are in. For instance fruit has a higher level of sugar yet is still healthy 66 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2017

because of the vitamins it contains. In comparison, candy also has high sugar levels, but is not healthy because it is high in fat and sodium and contains no nutrients. It is easiest to read the label top to bottom, starting with the serving size. Then, look at the “calories” and “calories from fat.” Calories indicate the quantity of energy that is obtained from the food. This section is very important if you are trying to maintain or lose weight.

Helpful Tip

As a general rule of thumb for a 2,000-calorie diet, a food product around 50 calories is low, 100 calories is normal and 500 or more is high. Underneath the “% Daily Value*” is the general suggestion of intake for each key nutrient for a 2,000-calorie diet.

PHOTO/LINA MOHAMMED

Have you ever looked at a packaged food item that had a food label you just couldn’t understand? Food labels are tough to decipher, with terms and sections that can be overwhelming.

A QUICK SUMMARY • Cholesterol is important to produce Vitamin C but too much of it can cause arteries to clot and cause a heart attack.

The following section, which includes the percentage of nutrients in the food, is important because high intake of saturated and trans fats can increase the chance of diseases such as coronary heart disease and cancers. Saturated fats increase cholesterol levels, but trans fats are naturally found in food. Therefore it is important to choose food products that are low in saturated fats. In order to maintain a healthy lifestyle, the percentages in this section must remain as low as possible. Still, some nutrients like fibre, protein, vitamins, calcium and iron are vital for your health for different reasons.

• Sodium is a salt that is vital for fluid balance but high quantities can cause high blood pressure. • Dietary Fiber decreases cholesterol levels and is necessary for regular bowel movements. • Protein is necessary.

to maintain energy levels. • Vitamin A is vital for eyesight and healthy skin. • Vitamin C repairs and rebuilds tissue in order for our bodies to heal. • Calcium is necessary to maintain healthy bones and teeth. • Iron helps the production of red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body.

KEEP THIS IN MIND

“Reduced Fat” has 25 percent or less fat than the normal product would, while “Light” indicates that 50 percent of the fat is reduced and “Low Fat” is a product that has three grams or less of fat per serving. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 67

12 MONTHS TO A HEALTHIER YOU Introducing the campaign and its founder. By Tala Hussein

Qualifications

Launching an awareness campaign titled 12 Months to a Healthier You, Mai Kholief, founder of MFIT, looks to introduce efficient and effective methods to fitness and healthy living. Inspired by the tradition of new year resolutions, the campaign aims to change an undesired health habit or daily practice.

I’m a certified personal trainer through NASM: one of the world renowned personal training programs, Calisthenics level 1, CrossFit level 1, and a TRX certification. I’m also looking into finishing a somatic certification for gaining a wellbeing discipline along with other training programs.

Exercises suitable for everyone? I’m a big fan of high intensity workouts. There is something for everyone including cardio, strength and conditioning. High intensity rapidly

decreases fat percentage, and due to their timed element, they naturally push you harder.

How would you describe your philosophy about being fit and healthy? Make it a lifestyle. You can’t be on a diet forever, so you have to make healthy living a lifestyle. Being active doesn’t necessarily mean strict fitness, there is something for everyone. It’s important to understand that just like your job is part of your daily routine, so is being active. mfit_maikholief

Unlike, new year resolutions, which often suffer a low success rate due to their generic composition, 12 Months to a Healthier You breaks down those goals into specified smart goals. Placed according to a timed manner, the goals become reasonably attainable and well-focused.

We spoke to Mai Kholief to gain a deeper background and understanding to her fitness experience. 70 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2017

The whole purpose of the campaign is to grapple with very simple and approachable goals throughout the year (one monthly), ultimately resulting in a higher success rate.

Finding Snow in the Desert By Caroline Hillier

For the first time in my life, I’m skipping the snow and freezing temperatures of a Canadian winter. But after swapping Canada’s cold for Jeddah’s heat, I’ve found myself longing for the season. No, I don’t miss the endless shoveling. I miss catching single snowflakes on my glove and inspecting them before they melt away. I miss the cracking and crunching of ice 82 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2017

under my feet. Most of all, I miss having to go inside to warm up. After opening too many tabs of potential weekend winter getaways, I decided a roundtrip flight for a couple days of snow wasn't worth it. That was until I found out I didn’t have to go far to find a winter retreat. It was waiting in the most unlikely of places: Dubai.

A SKI CHALET IN THE DESERT If you close your eyes and picture a ski lodge, complete with ski slope views and a crackling fireplace, you typically wouldn’t picture it to be in Dubai. But that’s exactly where you’ll find the Aspen Chalets, with authentic alpine designs including wooden beams and flooring, modern antler features, fur throw pillows, snowflake detailing and stone faux fireplaces.

COURTESY PHOTO

Head to Dubai for a winter wonderland vacation.

The Kempinski Hotel at Mall of the Emirates recently launched the newly renovated Aspen Chalets that overlook legendary Ski Dubai. When I walked into the spacious and luxurious chalet, I was instantly transported back to winter. The massive windows provide stunning views of the outdoor scene, complete with skiers on the powdery slopes. I put my hand on the cold glass that separated me and those bundled up for cold weather, and felt as if I was back in Canada’s cold and snowy season.

The impressive three bedroom chalet is set over three floors, and not only has a view of the slopes, but also of the Dubai skyline.

It’s no wonder that Slim Zaiane, the General Manager at Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates, explains the Aspen Chalets already have a high level of repeat guests.

SKI DUBAI SNOW PARK

STAFF PHOTO PENGUINS /CAROLINE HILLIER

Shocked at how cold it felt inside Ski Dubai, I regretted not bringing a hat. The hat wasn’t included in the blue snowsuit rental, which made me blend in with the others on the slopes. At the first and largest indoor ski resort in the Middle East, the temperature never drops below -6 degrees Celsius, so I decided I could do without the hat. The snow isn’t the only thing manufactured at Ski Dubai. The green plastic fir trees

are too. That, plus the men wearing thobes under their long jackets, made for a very unique winter scene. After a day of skiing, sliding and posing by the ice sculptures, it’s relaxing to sit in the Alpine themed chalet with a cup of steaming hot chocolate. Of course, no trip to Ski Dubai is complete without visiting the penguins! After handing back in the rented snowsuit, I headed back to the Aspen Chalet, turned on the relaxing crackling fireplace and curled up on the comfortable couch.

“Many of our guests are extremely well-travelled and used to experiencing the finer things in life. This is why it’s so exciting to see their reactions upon first entering the Aspen Chalets,” said Zaiane. “Children and parents alike marvel at the views and families are able to relax together, safe in the knowledge that our expert butlers will attend to their every need.” There are three restaurants at Kempinski Hotel, each offering a unique dining experience and delicious food. The wellness and fitness facilities features Softouch Spa, a state-of-the-art fitness center, tennis court and two temperature-controlled outdoor pools. A TIME TO CHILL Yanbu Waterfront Even man-made beaches can be good.

STAFF PHOTO / MOHAMMED MIRZA

By Mohammed Mirza

The soft sand disperses as we take baby steps in the cold sea. Calm waves lap the shoreline that is dotted with tire tracks all over, which we later found out to be of the coastguards that patrol the area. Yanbu’s Industrial Waterfront is so well laid out, that it serves as a benchmark for other beach development projects around the country. Designated areas for swimming, landscaped gardens, ample parking and various other amenities, need you ask more? It easily ranks in the top for being one of the best man-made beaches the Kingdom has to offer. Yanbu being a mediumsized city and within it, the Royal Commission which 86 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2017

houses the waterfront being an even more secluded area, the beach provides ample privacy and makes for a textbook picnic spot for families and singles alike. After a spontaneous decision, taken only a few hours before, we found ourselves passing refinery after refinery on route to Yanbu from Jeddah. On one side were the refineries that were lit brightly and on the other, there was the plain darkness of the empty desert. Some refineries even had a fire burning from the top of the boilers, burning byproducts of crude oil that was being refined there. Our car set on cruise control raced past the occasional small

villages and within a few hours, we ended up in Yanbu’s Royal Commission. After an overnight stay, we headed to Yanbu’s famed waterfront. The crowds here were in lesser numbers, the atmosphere more relaxed, as opposed to Jeddah’s beaches.

After sunset, the crowd shifted from the dark seaside towards the parking lot that is lit by street lights; their picnic continues.

Whatever shade there was, was already occupied by families the trees, the secluded tent-like structures and even the shade that came by the kiosks. By a garden next to the beach we ate food we bought from Al Baik. We actually were hoping for seafood but didn’t come across any seafood restaurants in the Royal Commission area, so we ended up relying on the timetested Al Baik. We were told the seafood restaurants were in the Balad area of Yanbu. After lunch, we crossed the landscaped area of the waterfront and made our way across the coarse sand. Perhaps the landscaped area is to expand further closer to the beach as this sand seems to have been sourced for developmental purposes and is not regular sea sand.

We walked on the coarse sand for a long distance before finally reaching the shoreline. We walked through the shallow waters barefoot, there were hardly any pebbles inside let alone rocks or stones. Without any visible vegetation growing in the water, we can safely say that the water was pretty much lifeless, making it ideal for swimming. Even the little ones can enter the water without the fear of getting bitten by crustaceans or getting their feet entangled in seaweed. From volleyball without nets to our own concocted water sports, we had a memorable time playing by the setting sun. The kiosks nearby serve tea and other food items at high prices; they were the only

food options for miles. We had other items to tick off from our list of places to visit in Yanbu, but the weekend was ending and the journey back to Jeddah was in the back of our heads, so we left soon after with unchecked boxes on our places to see list. Being just around three hours away from Jeddah, we found the waterfront to be an amazing picnic spot for those feeling a little more adventurous Yes, there are plentiful beaches en route to Yanbu but it is the location of this particular beach that undeniably makes the trip worthwhile.
