FROM THE EDITOR

GOOD VIBES ONLY Breezy weather is here – are you feeling happy, Jeddawis? We’ve collected all our positive energies to bring you another Good Vibes edition of Destination Jeddah, hoping to leave you feeling happy and inspired. 2017 has been an incredible time for the Kingdom, with impactful changes happening at every turn, and our special feature highlights some of the significant ones, to celebrate this new era for Saudis. We’ve packed this issue with stories that we loved working on from an exclusive look at the beautiful new Corniche and our local community of thrill-seeking motorcycle enthusiasts, to a conversation with business leader Jamal Al Akkad. For many of you, the new year signifies the beginning of a new chapter in life; minimalism and veganism are two lifestyles that we’ve explored this month. Take note, maybe you’ll find your goal for 2018! I hope the year has been good to you, and that the coming one is even better. Let’s set the tone by giving it the best, most positive versions of ourselves.

Huawei Takes KSA By Storm An interview with Vice President Pablo Ning DJ’s recent conversation with Pablo Ning, Vice President of Tech Investment Saudi Arabia at leading electronics brand Huawei, was enlightening to say the least. The Huawei brand arrived in the Kingdom 16 years ago, but it was three years ago that they entered the consumer electronics market. Ning talked to us about the major findings of their research.

Instead of imposing all their products on the market, Huawei supplies what the customer needs. Ning explains it’s part of their corporate culture – to add value to the customer’s consumption of technology. Or, as their slogan says, Building A Better Connected World. Huawei's studies show that

Saudis are more active during nighttime (from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.)

than during the day,

We discovered that Saudis tend to spend 5 to 6 hours a day on their mobile devices. The Saudi youth particularly are active on the internet. The latest Mate Series was incredibly popular here, especially because of its long battery life. — Pablo Ning

Huawei managed to enter a market that was new and different compared to what they were used to, but they did extensive research of the market to learn about Saudi culture and consumer behavior and demands.

with high consumption rates on Instagram and Twitter, an indication that they likely take pictures without much natural light. This is where the Huawei Nova comes in, equipped as it is with Leica lens, known to be among the best.

SOCIAL STARS at TEDxAlhamraa

The stage belonged to the inspiring women of Jeddah. By Sumaiyya Naseem

November’s Tedx AlHamraa Women event was a motivational highlight for Jeddawis, and also for delegate students of Al Hamraa School, who got the opportunity to interact with and interview some of their favorite locals. Hosted at Waad Academy, many inspirational Jeddawi women took to the stage to address important social issues and matters that affect our society. The talks were beneficial for a variety of reasons: from getting people a step closer to their goals to giving them insight in dealing with the emotional baggage 14 DESTINATION JEDDAH DECEMBER 2017

of life. TEDxAlhamraa beautifully instilled a sense of optimism, self-awareness, and social responsibility. It was a much-needed event that gave attendees the reflective boost they need to end the year with a positive spirit. Destination’s own Maria Mahdaly was one of the speakers at TEDxAlhamraa. Mahdaly’s thoughtful idea helped people realize the power that is in their hands, as individuals and a community, to be a medium – every one of us has a message to spread to the world.

Maria Mahdaly

Founder of Emkan Education Basma Bushnak spoke about the negative stigma attached to divorce and how her personal experience affected her life. Bushnak’s podcast Iqleb Al Saf’ha (Turn the Page) offers a moral support system for women dealing with divorce. Another voice of optimism was Asma Fatani, a woman who has fought to achieve her goals and helped her audience see how they could do the same. Khayra Bundakji, co-founder of the youthful Mstdfr podcast, gave a cheerful and uplifting

talk about authenticity of the self and defying gender stereotypes. Nouf Hakeem, creator of The Lighthouse Concept, spoke on selflove and acceptance. The idea of self-love is all about confronting the ill feelings one might have about themselves. Hakeem inspired the audience to face their true emotions and make peace with their true self. The star of Saudi film Barakah Meets Barakah and the founder of The Other Story Project, Fatima Al Banawi, addressed the issue of our cultural

identity and how it’s negatively affected by the portrayal of Arabs in western media. Meanwhile, Amal Dokhan added a little bravery to the evening by asking the audience to try something new; each member of the audience drew the person sitting next to them in ten seconds. The prompt dared them to do something they might otherwise have hesitated to attempt. Many more hardworking women lit up TEDx Alhamraa Women with their ideas. More power to them!

Tasmeem Art & Design Fair An intersection of art, architecture, and interior design

The Saudi Art Council’s latest initiative, Tasmeem Fair, was an artistic tribute to architecture and interior design. The exhibition, which ran from Nov. 18-28, featured a number of architects and interior design professionals who constructed evocative art installments and pieces. The theme of Tasmeem was to reflect on the multidimensional spaces that we inhabit, and to celebrate the intersection of surface forms and the internal layers of life. The line-up of artists included Malak Masallati, Payman Moshfeghi, and Ahmad Angawi. Angawi showcased Shai (meaning object), a series of multi-purpose furniture designs composed using three basic kinds of plywood units that were arranged to form platforms, seats, and shelves. This one’s for lovers of Islamic art and geometric patterns.

The Pavilion by Amar Omar Alamdar

The Pavilion by Amar Omar Alamdar was the Tasmeem exhibit we kept going back to. The breathtaking exhibit is an experience carefully curated by Alamdar. “The Pavilion is a metaphor for the beauty of architecture that is disappearing and our heritage that is fading away. My exhibit presents stages that will entice you to feel and contemplate,” he explained. Experiencing the philosophical depth of The Pavilion begins when you set your eyes on the tantalizing fabrics that form its walls. Alamdar elaborated, “The concept starts with the delicate fabrics and the powerful image (of architectural structure) that they represent. Their

transparency creates an illusion where things appear to be but are not there.” Alamdar’s Pavilion encourages visitors to reflect upon every pattern, motif, or detail chosen by the artist. “Entering The Pavilion is a nostalgia-driven experience. It’s a look back at our heritage and history. I am a cancer survivor, and when I created The Pavilion, it was from a place of appreciation, for life and nature.” With the detailing and thought that went into the making of the Pavilion, Amar Alamdar has established himself as a prominent and introspective artist and interior designer. WHO'S WHO

REACH FOR

THE STARS Mishaal Ashemimry talks about her inspiration and fight for science.

The Unaizah desert is located close to the Saudi city of Unaizah in the Najd province. While unknown to many around the world, this desert is actually very close to Mishaal Ashemimry’s heart. The American-Saudi aerospace engineer and founder of MISHAAL Aerospace, a company based in Miami, Florida in the US that specializes in launch vehicle/rocket development for space applications, recalls the moment during her childhood in Saudi that sparked something in her, “It was dark and cool with the faint whispers of the camels in the distance. I looked up at the sky; it was illuminated with very dense stars. And that’s how I was inspired.”

she’d revisited Unaizah desert, Ashemimry lit up with a smile and said, “I have never been back there since that moment, so I need to revisit. I would absolutely go in a heartbeat.” Ashemimry is based in Miami, Florida, where she founded MISHAAL Aerospace in 2010 to pursue her ultimate dream of building rockets. She is currently looking for investors for her company. Talking about her plans, Ashemimry says, “If things don’t go the way I want them to then I will most likely go back to get my PhD. If things do go well, I’d be really interested in seeing some space related items in the Middle East and Gulf in general. It would be nice to see a space agency or something spacerelated happen here.”

Inquisitive as a child, Ashemimry couldn’t stop asking questions about the stars that had become her biggest curiosity. She wanted to know what the stars were, “The best way to know them is to go to space, and how do you do that? Rockets can take you there.” This childhood curiosity grew into an education and profession. When asked if

However, certain restrictions on American companies would make it difficult for Ashemimry to bring her company here, “There are a lot of policies, especially in aerospace. It’s a very sensitive and regulated field.”

should not let obstacles stop them from achieving their dreams, “You’re going to face some very complex and difficult obstacles along the way, especially as a woman, that may deter you from where you need to go. You just need to focus on your vision. People who face criticism and are put down, they are the ones who get there. They’re the determined ones.” The highlight of Ashemimry’s trip was the event at Dar Al Hekma University where she gave a talk on her work and journey in aerospace, “People seemed very receptive. I felt like they had something to gain from it, which to me is the whole purpose of having a strong online presence.” The young aerospace engineer believes in taking initiative and fighting for what makes your heart beat, “Essentially from a passion perspective, because a lot of the time the world around us can hinder that. What’s interesting to me is that some people are not even aware of these sciences that are out there. When they discover it and like it, they start reading more and it creates this bug, this spark that makes them yearn to learn more.” That spark for Mishaal Ashemimry was looking at the sky in the Unaizah desert, “All I needed was the stars to inspire me. A MODERN-DAY PHILOSOPHER Entrepreneurship, Bob Marley, and the wisdom of Jamal Al Akkad. By Noura Al Joaib

We often feature business owners of either young startups or multi-generational family dynasties in Destination. We often talk about their personal journeys, their struggles, and of course, their successes. However, for every successful business owner, there are hundreds struggling to make it. These men and women deserve a voice. Their stories are just as important as those who have been successful. In fact, their stories may even be more important to you than the business owners that have made it. It is from our failures, and the failures of others, that we can truly learn and grow. So, who will give the silent majority their voice? The moment the door opens, the first thing that catches my eye is his perpetual smile. He looks like a man constantly on the verge of laughter. His eyes convey a passion and drive to help the thousands of entrepreneurs he’s worked with, whose dreams he believes in as strongly as they do. He understands them and feels for them. And more than that, he is here to help them. 32 DESTINATION JEDDAH DECEMBER 2017

This, ladies and gentlemen, is Jamal Al Akkad.

STAFF PHOTO/ ALZAHRA ALDAWOOD

Al Akkad has founded several entrepreneurship-support organizations, lectured on entrepreneurship across the Kingdom, and been an entrepreneur himself. He is articulate, quick to answer, and well-read. By his own accord, he has had a string of failures in his life which he has gotten back up from and persevered to become the national icon of entrepreneurship in the Kingdom that he is today. I asked Al Akkad to sit down with us to give us perspective on the entrepreneurship ecosystem.

Al Akkad exudes an infectious love for life that carries over into everything he does.

The first myth he debunks is that entrepreneurship means starting a business. Entrepreneurship, as Al Akkad eloquently puts it, is a way of thinking that embodies innovation and creativity; it means approaching problems in non-conventional ways with “no taboos in front of your way of thinking.” Taking a creative idea and commercializing it, is another matter entirely, one that requires the entrepreneur to “come down from 50,000 ft. and start with what is doable and practical.” It’s this step that many entrepreneurs neglect, and why many startups fail. However, Al Akkad believes that failure is a necessary step in eventual success. In his love to help people achieve their dreams, he pushes them to learn from their failures rather than fear them. He encourages them to persevere, and asks them to reflect on DESTINATIONKSA.COM 33

Dreamers are the most human of us all. Everything starts with a dream.

their experiences, because he believes in their capacity to find the answers within. Al Akkad admits that he often does not know the answers, but then again, neither does anyone else. He famously quotes Bob Marley: “Don’t let them fool you, or even try to school you.” This is the second myth he debunks: no one knows the formula for success, it is something you must figure out for yourself. And, more importantly, your success will be different than anyone else’s success, so don’t try to be like someone else. 34 DESTINATION JEDDAH DECEMBER 2017

Al Akkad also points out that entrepreneurs in various regions of the Kingdom have unique traits that they capitalize on. For example, Sharqiya has long been influenced by the presence of Saudi Aramco and SABIC; these influences have led to entrepreneurs that are extremely committed and disciplined. Entrepreneurs from Najd, on the other hand, have long been adventurous, brave, and willing to take calculated risks. Consequently, the greatest economic growth in the Kingdom has come from

Najd. Hijazi entrepreneurs have a unique ability to capitalize on and create new markets, as a consequence of a millennium-old heritage influenced by Hajj and Umrah. As such, Hijaz demonstrates the greatest economic diversity of any region in the Kingdom. You won’t find this regional analysis of entrepreneurship in any report or textbook. This is Al Akkad’s own interpretation of a field he has spent his life working in. He has leveraged his knowledge of our history and his experiences to weave a philosophical analysis of the

ecosystem. In fact, if you were to describe Jamal Al Akkad in a few words, it would be that he is a modern-day humanistic philosopher. He believes that our society would do well to reflect more often on our history; there is a lot that can be gained from knowing what we accomplished in our past, knowledge that can foster our belief in ourselves to achieve more in the future. When I ask Al Akkad who has made him the man he is today, who influenced him personally and professionally, he starts with his greatest

personal influence: his mother. With love and compassion, he professes his gratitude to her for raising him to be a fighter with the heart of a poet. He then turns to his professional influence, and says “My Grandfather”, whose name he speaks with reverence and awe. It is from his grandfather that Al Akkad learned to love life, to focus on his own growth, and not to judge others; essentially, the principles that make Al Akkad the man he is today. When I ask him whom he idolizes, he mentions Martin Luther King, Jr., because of

his “I Have a Dream” speech. Al Akkad strongly believes the world needs more dreamers. To illustrate this point, Jamal Al Akkad references King Abdulaziz, who, to Al Akkad, was a dreamer; a dreamer who dreamed of a much better world for his people in the early 20th century. He was a visionary, an entrepreneur in his thinking, and today, we are all living the realization of King Abdulaziz’s dream. Web: Evc3.net Email: jamal@evc3.net Jamalalakkad

A NEW FINANCIAL ERA FOR SAUDIS Four major developments in Saudi finance By Amr Banaja, VP of Corp Comm and Marketing, SEDCO

THE FUND OF FUNDS

Saudi Arabia is no doubt a major contributor to new business ideas and enterprises in the Middle East. The Kingdom has launched Fund of Funds as a major financial boost to SMEs. This program is an investment fund backed by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, with a capital capacity of SR 4 billion. The Fund of Funds is expected to actively engage the private sector in the Kingdom, directing government support towards domestic investment in SMEs and boosting their access to capital by investing in venture capital and private equity funds. SIGNIFICANCE: This move is expected to increase the country’s GDP by a grand SR 400 million, and provide around 2,600 jobs by the end of 2020. 36 DESTINATION JEDDAH DECEMBER 2017

by the rightful beneficiaries who require financial support.

DIGITAL CURRENCY TEST RUN FOR SAUDI BANKS

Saudi Arabia is one of the very first nations globally along with the UAE, Sweden, and Estonia to pursue the establishment of a national cryptocurrency. The virtual currency will be implemented and traded only between banks as of now. The pilot project will be monitored closely to analyse the overall contribution of a digital currency to the sector and possibilities of its further application or termination. The numbers are expected to increase to 58,000 jobs and a GDP of SR 8.6 billion by the end of 2027. SIGNIFICANCE: Cryptocurrencies are getting a lot of attention worldwide for their benefits, such as low issuance cost and ease of transport.

THE SAUDI CITIZEN’S ACCOUNT PROGRAM: BY SAUDI FOR A SAUDI

The Saudi Ministry of Labour and Social Development has launched the Saudi Citizen’s Account Program earlier this year. The program will ensure that the benefits are received

SIGNIFICANCE: The aim is to ensure the financial stability of all Saudi citizens and families and to cushion them from the side effects of the current economic reforms being carried out by the Kingdom.

SUBSIDIZED HOME FINANCE FOR SAUDIS: SUPPORTING HOMEOWNERSHIP

The subsidized housing loan program is an extensive effort by the Real Estate Development Fund (REDF) to encourage home ownership across the Kingdom. The program helps cover the total applicable cost of interest on the loan amount for citizens with an income of SR 14,000 or below. The program will partially cover the applicable cost of interest for citzens earning a higher income. SIGNIFICANCE: By covering the profit margins of the lender, the program offers affordable home finance for eligible citizens, in addition to a fast real estate finance option that takes a maximum of 5 years, as opposed to the average 10year period. The Jeddah Waterfront A brand new corniche experience By Basma Baarma

Rejoice, Jeddawis! The new Jeddah Waterfront is a sight to behold. The Jeddah Municipality has revamped our precious Corniche, taking it to the next level. Bigger in size, better in services, and fully catering to the people’s needs, the Waterfront will soon be opening its doors to the public. The new project is divided into 7 different, color-coded sections that stretch along a 4km radius. Each one includes a special feature that makes them standout. For instance, a walk around the Nawras will tell you that it is the biggest of them all. It proudly houses the famous Nawras sculpture and the first hanging bridge that extends as far as 650 miles, connecting the Corniche to Prince Faisal bin Fahd Rd. Tawheed’s unique feature is

the Tawheed sculpture and the newly renovated Tawheed mosque. With two different beaches in its area, the Rimal is aptly named. Between the beaches is a children’s water park, and each beach has 2 shower buildings for the convenience of visitors.

COURTESY PHOTO

Lu’lu’, the second biggest, has all the greenery you could possible want. With a museum also situated there, a touch of culture by the sea is exactly what you’ll get. To fix the issue of being so close, yet so far from the sea (the actual water), a dock is available with rental boats should you feel like taking a turn around the water.

The Waterfront's playgrounds are themed – one area has a collection of different game stations from police cars to ambulances, all aiming to educate children on emergency protocols, and another one is space-themed and teaches about space.

Take a walk or cycle on the new foot bridge connecting the Corniche to Prince Faisal bin Fahd Rd.

Since Jeddah is known for its fishing, it isn’t surprising that they named one of the areas Sayyad. An impressive A jetty with comfortable seating for families to enjoy sea

jetty stretches into the sea and includes two beaches, open for swimming, shaped like a crescent island. Meanwhile, Khaleej has a relic of Jeddah; the ship sculptures all fixed up and ready for a close up. While different areas contain features that set them apart, what they do have in common are the facilities that are provided: wi-fi, charging

stations, as well as seats with built-in chargers, food shacks, state-of-the-art lavatories and restrooms, walkways, and playgrounds for children. The Jeddah Waterfront’s modern design and highquality facilities is sure to make the gorgeous new Corniche Jeddah’s coolest – and latest – hangout for families and friends. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 45

Riding in the Kingdom Gear up. Riding season is here.

The deep rumble coming from exhaust pipes, the thump of the engines, wrapped in leather or shoulder-padded jackets, patched vests, gloves, helmets and protective boots, the motorcycle riders are definitely going to be parading the streets of Jeddah more often than the past months, turning heads and allowing their machines to establish a lifestyle that is considered a minority.

Today, motorcycles aren’t just less expensive and a more convenient means of transportation. It has evolved into a symbol of freedom, an expression of individuality and another way of making trips more exciting. It might come as a surprise to some, especially those who aren’t aware of the sub-culture, but Saudi Arabia actually has its own community of Motorcycle Enthusiasts. Depending on your style preference, like sport bikes, cruisers, all-terrain adventure bikes or motocross, it’s easy to find like-minded groups that welcome you into their tightknit, family-oriented circle. According to Sarry Shabban, one of Saudi’s veteran riders, there are plenty of upcoming events and activities since the community has been growing in recent times. Shabban has ridden all over Saudi

Arabia’s roads, constantly travelling cross-country on his motorcycle. In his own words, “I ride because it’s my way of meditating, whenever I’m wearing my gear, feeling the wind against my face and twisting the throttle on the open roads, it’s like complete tranquility. I highly recommend everyone to give it a try.” Local dealerships offer training courses for first-time riders to further enhance riding skills and minimize the possibilities of accidents. They also have the means to guide you into participating at a more complex and advanced Riding Course such as the MotoGym Khana and the TopGun. Community events and social gatherings are organized every now and then for all bikers of different backgrounds to get together. Earlier this year, the 1st Jeddah Bike Week was launched in King Abdullah Economic

The Kingdom offers wide roads in between deserts, curvy back roads of mountains and a lot of dry land waiting to be experienced by twowheelers. Being on a bike is a different experience, like bikers always say: If I have to explain it to you, you just won’t understand. So if you’re tired of spending your days caged in your vehicle, cooped up in the office or simply bored of the daily hustle and bustle, do yourself a favor and get away on a motorcycle for a mini-vacation. You might find yourself looking forward to the weekend for adventurous rides across the country or in your city. 48 DESTINATION JEDDAH DECEMBER 2017

KNOW YOUR COFFEE KNOW., a Saudi company that organizes creative workshops led by international guest trainers, aims to inspire people to practice their hobbies and introduce them to new experiences. They held the Barista Skills Masterclass in October, inspired by the recent boom of coffee shops all around the Kingdom, and which I attended. “20% of the air you breathe is made by the coffee plants alone!” declared Barista trainer Balint Szabo, as we sat around tables in a cozy café called Ristretto. The air was thick with the aroma of freshly brewed espresso as our barista took us on a journey of the mysterious origin of the coffee beans.

Kaldi reported his findings to the abbot of the local monastery, who made a drink with the berries and found that it kept him alert through the long hours of evening prayer. The abbot shared his discovery with the other monks at the monastery, and knowledge of the energizing berries began to spread all over. As word 62 DESTINATION JEDDAH DECEMBER 2017

moved east and coffee reached the Arabian Peninsula, it began a journey that would bring these beans across the globe, beginning with Yemen, Persia, Egypt, Syria, and then Turkey. As demand for the beverage continued, there was fierce competition to cultivate coffee outside of Arabia, and it was stolen, pirated, shipped. War was waged, fortunes made and lost. New coffee economy nations were established. The famed Brazilian coffee owes its existence to Francisco

de Mello Palheta, who was sent by the emperor to French Guiana to get coffee seedlings. The French were not willing to share, but the French Governor's wife, captivated by his good looks, fell in love and gave him a large bouquet of flowers before he left – buried inside were enough coffee seeds to begin what is today a billion-dollar industry. By the end of the 18th century, coffee became one of the world's most profitable export crops. And also the most popular after crude oil.

Coffee can be traced back centuries to the ancient coffee forests on the Ethiopian plateau. It was there, legend says, the goat herder Kaldi first discovered coffee when, after his goats ate berries from a certain tree, he noticed that they became so energetic that they did not want to sleep at night.

Saudi-born Paris-based haute couture jewelry designer Nourah Al Faisal launched her own scintillating brand – Nuun – in 2014, and her beautiful creations have grabbed the attention of global jewelry seekers in a big way.

After graduating from university, Al Faisal apprenticed at Georland, a famous high jewelry shop in Paris, learning the nuts and bolts of designing couture jewelry. She then commissioned pieces for over 15 years before finally setting up her Nuun empire, the embodiment of her personal aesthetics heavily influenced by her culture and heritage.

NOURAH AL FAISAL

Al Faisal’s fixation with jewelry developed very early on; she enjoyed visiting the high jewelry shops at London’s Bond Street and Paris’s Place Vendôme with her mother. “I was particularly captivated by the precious metals, the gems, how they’re designed to fit and enhance the human body, and how they express the personality of the people who wear them.”

the neck. “They need to be beautiful but also comfortable. It’s essential to visualize what the piece will look and feel like before it’s made.” So she sticks to a simple practice, her overall design mantra. “I try to simplify as much as possible. I’m not a minimalist by rote, but I don’t like overly complicated designs either,” Al Faisal says.

MANCHETTE HOWLITE BANAJIR BANGLES

Nuun jewels are also influenced by everything else she was exposed to while growing up and things she comes across when she travels. One of her popular creations, Banajir bangles, has a distinctive pattern purely reflective of a traditional geometric pattern often found on the doorways of Saudi houses. When it comes to what women really look for in jewelry they purchase, Al Faisal considers

that it mainly depends on the type of jewelry and what the occasion is. “I believe that women are more drawn to beauty; they go for jewelry pieces that can express their personalities and make them feel special,” she says. “I try to design pieces that I would want to wear myself. Personally, I’ve always given priority to quality over quantity.” To make each piece fit perfectly, she stays aware of how a bracelet will rest on the arm or a necklace around

Showcasing her creations highprofile exhibitions is equally important, as she explains, “It’s important to introduce what I do to a wider audience. Exhibiting designs is part of the creative process. This is where the Middle East comes up since it’s my home. Women in the Middle East have a very strong sense of fashion and a wonderful understanding of jewelry.” Everything has been happening behind the scenes, but now it’s open for all to see, as she has opened a boutique in Paris next to the Bristol hotel. At the end of the day, Al Faisal takes delight in the fact that her jewelry pieces are used to celebrate love and life. It may be a birthday, an anniversary, a wedding or any other special occasion. “Through them, I get to be part of people’s joyful moments,” she says. “I’m a very private person, so my jewelry often celebrates happy private moments. And I want it to stay that way.” DESTINATIONKSA.COM 69

MINIMALISM, ARE YOU UP FOR IT? The trend that says you can’t buy happiness. By Sumaiyya Naseem

Have you been feeling overwhelmed lately? Do you feel you have too many commitments in your life? Minimalism, a trend worldwide, might be the lifestyle change that you need to make.

leaves you with nothing but two t-shirts and a lot of white space. It’s a process that helps you keep the important things in your life, and do away with all the unnecessary bits that might be causing you stress without realizing it.

Magic of Tidying Up at the forefront of the campaign. It’s a guidebook for anyone who wants their living space to be a positive contributor towards their health and wellbeing. You can actually get trained to become a KonMari consultant; as a consultant you would apply the KonMari method

to guide your clients through tidying up their spaces. Mai Hakeem is a local of our city who’s currently a KonMari consultant trainee and a de-cluttering consultant. According to Hakeem, there is a fine difference between de-cluttering and minimalism. “De-cluttering is clearing your personal space, including your phone and emails, to make space for things that bring you joy,” she explains. In her work as a de-cluttering consultant, Hakeem works with her clients to clear up their spaces. While minimalism involves the act of de-cluttering, it’s not exclusive to it. Hakeem clarifies, “Minimalism is about having a renewed energy that helps you realize that you actually need limited possessions in your life. In this way, minimalism saves your time, money and energy.” It applies to all aspects of life.

#PROJECT333 Project 333 is an invitation to dress with 33 items or less for the duration of 3 months. The items would include clothing, accessories and jewelry, outerwear and even shoes. Sleepwear, undergarments and workout clothing are not part of the 33 items. Once you’ve selected the pieces, you have

to box up the rest, tape it and put it out of your sight. The Takeaway: Project 333 will help you think about your behavior towards fashion. It will reveal how much you were buying compared to what you really need. The challenge can help you discover a fashionable lifestyle that’s sustainable and saves a lot of money.

THE MINIMALIST MEAL A minamalistic diet will help you feel more active and energized.

Minimalism in diet is easier to approach when you admit to yourself that food is not entertainment. Sticking to foods that will nourish your body and give it strength is the basic formula. Typically, this kind of diet does not include unnecessary carbs, sugar, gluten, dairy and anything that is processed or packaged. The Takeaway: It’s likely that you will drop the extra pounds and live a healthier and more satisfied life. By eliminating processed and packaged food you will produce less nonbiodegradable waste.

SHIFT YOUR PARADIGM Lama Al Ghalayini on transforming your life

In her book on spirituality Beautiful Paradigm For Life, Lama Al Ghalayini tells the story of an old man sitting outside the walls of a great city. Travelers would ask him, “What kind of people live in

80 DESTINATION JEDDAH DECEMBER 2017

this city?” and the old man would ask them back, “What kind of people live where you come from?” If the travelers answered, “Only bad people,” he’d reply, “Continue on; you will find only bad people here.” And if the travelers answered, “Only good people,” the old man would say, “Enter, for here too you will find only good people.” Al Ghalayini uses this story to introduce the concept of Paradigm, which she says are like “mental glasses”; when you have incomplete paradigms about yourself or life in general, it’s like having the wrong prescription glasses – it affects how you see everything else. She further explains, “If we want to make significant changes, we must alter the way we perceive things, as our perception determines our attitude, our behavior, and our relationships with others.” This, she asserts, is a crucial step towards personal development.

Personal Development in the Kingdom

As someone who has worked for more than 15 years on empowerment programs and personal development, Al Ghalayini has seen improvements in Saudi Arabia. “When I began in 1999, personal development was a vague concept and initiatives that improve awareness and perception were uncommon. There was more focus on classical psychology – personality disorders like depression or anxiety, and less on positive reinforcement. Now, people, especially the youth, who make up 46% of our population, prioritize their well-being and aim to maximize their potential. There’s more acceptance towards selfdevelopment programs and more interest in creating a path to life effectiveness.” The Kingdom’s Vision 2030 has also placed importance on this with one of its themes: “A vibrant society that leads a fulfilling life,” a vision that, according to Al Ghalayini, encourages citizens to pursue a positive mindset and achieve a balanced lifestyle by promoting a higher level of social and psychological well-being.

Empowering Society

Al Ghalayini started Orbits Development Empowerment Consultancy (ODEC) in 2001

to empower those who want a more fulfilling role and innovative presence in society, especially women. Their motto “Attitude is everything” asserts that changing our internal attitudes can help us change the external aspects of our lives. “Our program helps women eliminate negative assumptions that hold them back from their true potential, encouraging them to become the master of change rather than a victim,” she explains. “Our latest program Paradigm was designed based on the 3 Ps of a mental programming model – positive perceptual programming – which supports positive perception in our mentality.”

We become what we think about the most, so send positive commands to your mind – feed it with bright pictures. We can expect a growth in positive culture in our society. — Lama Al Ghalayini A master trainer in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), PMA (Positive Mental Attitude), EQ (Emotional Intelligence), CORT for Creative Thinking, and Time Line Therapy, Lama Al Ghalayini is a solutionfocused practitioner, transformation mentor, author, columnist, and researcher in positive psychology. DECEMBER HABIT: REFLECTION

This is when I realized a pattern: most goals people were setting were vague and generic. December is the best time to reflect on the past year, and also plan for the year ahead. This is how 12 Months to a Healthier You was actually born. The idea behind this challenge occurred to me last year, with the hype of New Year’s Resolutions everywhere. I asked clients and my followers what their goals were and what stopped them from reaching them. I realized the most common goal was to lose weight.

A Review of the 12 Months to a Healthier You challenge! January: Cut added sugars by 50% or completely. February: Developed meal planning & preparation. March: Got check-ups done. April: Cut out salt. May: Detoxed the right way. June: Learned to indulge in healthier desserts. July: Made hydration important. August: Took 10k steps a day. September: Better sleep, better life. October: Talked about healthy food, active living, and Breast Cancer Awareness. November: How to reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes.

optimal health and fitness, you must change your lifestyle, which includes eating habits and exercise. Breaking down goals into more manageable and smaller chunks will make it easier and more sustainable. Signing up for the 12 Months to a Healthier You challenge should have, by now, taught you consistency and patience. You should also have learned how to make overall lifestyle changes. But let’s not forget about our mental health. Self-reflection in the form of prayer, meditation, relaxation and deep breathing is an effective way to calm your mind and nurture your spirit. The pace of today’s world makes self-reflection more difficult, but a mere 5-10 minutes a day can calm your mind. Looking within helps us define our happiness; you can do this by thinking about things in life that you are grateful for. A little self-reflection will help you understand how much joy and peace we can have in our lives if we only learn to recognize it. For those who joined us on this journey, whether through our articles in Destination Jeddah or via monthly campaigns on Instagram, how was your experience? Did breaking down the habits make it easier & more achievable? Hope to hear from you, and happy new year! Email: mai.kholief@mfit.fit mfit_maikholeif

It will definitely satisfy both the thrill-seeking driver, and provide comfort and excitement to all passengers. The panoramic grid roof is one of the GTC4Lusso’s standout features – it extends over the backseat and keeps the inside temperature consistent, even in harsher climates.

Upon resting eyes on this beauty, you can see that there is a clear distinction from Ferrari’s well-known shape. The body’s style offers an elegance combined with the signature sporty look. The interior of the car, inlaid with luxurious leathers, introduces the brand new Dual Cockpit; the front passenger can enjoy the benefits of becoming a co-driver with dials that offer functions and entertainment.

Our day with the Ferrari wrapped up with a long drive around the streets of Dubai, with the Ferrari GTC4Lusso gliding down the roads like it was right at home. Story by:
