ISSUE 101 JUNE 2017

FROM THE EDITOR

Mubarak Alaykom Al Shahar Jeddahwis! Welcome to our highly anticipated June/ Ramadan issue. This issue of our precious magazine is a favorite to put together. Stories come easy for this month as most of us write slightly reminiscently in Ramadan. As we all know, Ramadan is the perfect time for dates. It is a staple everyday, but did you know this Ramadan is the first one in a while without fresh dates? Yup, it turns out they’ll be in season around the end of the month. If you’re as date curious as we are, check out our interview with Dr. Mohammed Al Nuwairan, the godfather of Saudi dates. In this issue we also paid homage to a few of Jeddah’s most notable mosques to bask in their beauty. How many will you try to visit this month for taraweeh? We can’t wait to go back ourselves. Check out our list and let us know if we missed any of your favorite mosques. At the end of June, we’ll welcome in our first holiday of the year, Eid. We put together a list of recommended activities and gift planning services. This month is a time of spirituality, reflection and family. So keep your family close and self closer.

Find out how Cambridge programmes help students from Saudi Arabia get into universities around the world Cambridge International AS & A Levels are recognised as a passport to success in education, university and employment. They are valued by universities around the world as academically rigorous qualifications that equip students with the skills they need to succeed both at university and beyond. Universities tell us that they value the independent research and critical thinking skills that our qualifications develop, as well as the deep subject knowledge. When we asked some of the world’s top universities, including Yale and Harvard, to tell us what they think about Cambridge qualifications, 98% said they give students excellent preparation for university.

“We think that Cambridge international qualifications are a really good preparation for university study. They allow students to specialise in particular subjects and to develop lots of other skills which are really useful for university study – like communication skills, research skills and problem-solving skills.”

“Cambridge International A Level Chemistry provided me with hands-on experience to build a solid understanding of all other sciences, including physics and biology. Students wanting to join a medical or pharmacy school will benefit from the Cambridge International A Level Chemistry syllabus.”

FATIMA NAGHI

Emerging Educationalist at

NAHDA ACADEMY A conversation with the founder of the innovative Nahda Academy. Fatima Naghi is a Saudi parent and an educationalist with a vision for the ideal school for modern Saudi Arabia. She founded Nahda Academy as a focused effort to innovate the local education system and create deeper learning in children.

What inspired you to start Nahda Academy? I strongly believe that children learn best in an environment where they feel safe to take risks and learn from their mistakes. With this in mind, I wanted to create a school of passionate and engaged learners who enjoy each day of discovery and deep learning.

Our English curriculum is interwoven with Islamic values and Arabic culture. The students at Nahda learn to appreciate the traditions of their family and community as well as understand their place as future global citizens. We offer our students the opportunity to explore the Kingdom as well as travel abroad, and work on projects with students from affiliated schools in the UK. 28 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2017 ADVERTORIAL

How does the Academy help the children thrive as global citizens?

Enrollments at Nahda Academy are currently open for the 2017/2018 academic years; starting with nursery and primary school, for the age group of 3 to 7 years. The school will open to higher age groups from 2018.

What makes Nahda Academy unique compared to other schools in Jeddah?

COURTESY PHOTO

At Nahda Academy our innovative curriculum is based on the most effective learning and teaching practices across the world. In early years, we develop young minds through the well-acclaimed Montessori approach in both English and Arabic. This includes creative thinking and experiential learning in a holistic environment. In junior school they follow the Singapore Math curriculum that has been adopted by most primary schools in the UK and across the world.

What is the Academy’s take on homework? We believe in the importance of family life and quality time

together. We do not assign homework, but parents can access the teachers to give advice and to be able to share their child’s educational journey. Our main request is for parents to encourage their children to speak in Arabic.

Does Nahda Academy encourage individualized learning? Yes, we encourage the children to pursue their interests. Every child is valued as a unique individual. By allowing students to excel at what they are good at and enjoy, we develop a love for learning at an early age. Students are also free to learn at their own pace, each advancing through the curriculum as he is ready, guided by the teacher through an individualized learning plan. This also keeps them from getting bored of school.

The Academy calls itself “an emotionally literate community”. Can you elaborate and tell us why you feel this is important? Nahda Academy is a warm and welcoming learning environment; we care for each other and we encourage and expect the best from our children in all aspects of school life. This is represented in our core belief in an emotional education where positive relationships provide the framework for all that we do. Research shows emotional intelligence to be the key factor for success in a person’s life, be it in their professional, social or home life. Academic excellence on its own is not enough to excel in life. Web: nahda-academy.edu.sa Email: info@nahda-academy.edu.sa Tel: +966-12-6621656 Mob: +966-555165612 ADVERTORIAL DESTINATIONKSA.COM 29

HILTON EMPLOY TALENTED YOUTH

We are Hilton. We are hospitality.

Like clockwork, every morning, the GM of DoubleTree by Hilton Riyadh starts his day by taking a round through the hotel. The GM’s walk is a chance for him to greet all the hotel’s employees before the day starts. After being named best company to work for in KSA, Hilton has chosen Saudi Arabia as a key country to focus their efforts. With many hotels being built in addition to those in operation, Hilton see it as vital that they do all they can to attract young Saudi talent. So, for their youth development week, DoubleTree Hilton invited us to a behind the scenes exclusive. As a temporary employee, I was 30 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2017 ADVERTORIAL

given an all access pass to find out what it’s like to work in a busy hotel. As a temporary employee, I was given an all access pass to find out what it’s like to work in a busy hotel. From the moment you walk through the hotel doors, you’ll be greeted by smiling faces and a good morning from every other passing employee. As cliché as it sounds, it turns out a hotel like DoubleTree Hilton can also feel like home.

DR staff working behind the scenes with the Hilton chef.

If home is where the heart is, then it’s no surprise the hotel has managed to accomplish that feat. Throughout the back corridors of the hotel, the area guests never get a chance to see, the walls are covered with motivational posters and employee accolades. “You are the heart of Hilton” DR staff going through the house keeping process.

is the phrase that greets employees along with heart shapes on almost every wall. For the skeptics who believe that it takes more than a few posters to make a good work environment, whatever it is that the Hilton is doing, it is working. Whether I was working behind the cooking station, the front desk or even housekeeping, every person I came in contact with had a smile and a hello for me. It was not a coerced obligatory greeting. Everyone, no matter where they stand, receives the same genuine greeting. Put my statements to the test, and the next time you’re in DoubleTree approach the front desk and you’ll see what I mean. If you seem

like an approachable enough person, the guys and girls behind the counter might even throw in a couple of jokes with the obligatory and famous check-in cookie. Throughout my time with DoubleTree I learned that hospitality is not just the name of the industry, it’s the rule of thumb, especially here. It’s not just reserved for the guests either; it’s for your coworkers as well. After all, almost every person I ran into had confessed that the camaraderie in the hotel is akin to that of a family. efficiency, product quality, effective marketing programs inside and outside the country, encouraging creativity and innovation, strengthening the collaboration between all parties and leveraging the dates sector as a key source of national income.

How did you end up running NCPD? It was a long journey, 12 years in the making. After earning both my MSc and PhD in Management Science (manufacturing, logistics, supply chain management), I studied many worldwide cases and worked closely with many governments and private agencies in the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. I came back to King Faisal University to work as Assistant Professor at the School of Business, and that’s where NCPD approached me to lead the center.

What do you believe is the role of dates and palm trees in our future? producers inside and outside the country, searching for the best technology and processes worldwide to increase the efficiency of production and the supply chain process.

Why was it created? To develop the dates sector by concentrating on production

I see dates and palm trees as a great source of income for producers and a rewarding opportunity for investors. They will also contribute to the change in our food choices when opting for a healthier lifestyle. I would definitely call it a promising sector.

Who do you see as the champions of the palms

and dates sector? I would say Qasim Province is at the top, followed by Al Ahsa, then Madinah and finally Kharj.

What’s the most important thing you’d learned during your years abroad that you brought back with you? For me personally, I learned to be a lot more patient. I also realized how crucial customer service and commitment was for business.

If your closest friends and family were to describe you in three words, what would those words be? Hardworking, persistent and ambitious.

What’s your favorite aspect about Ramadan? I always look forward to praying taraweeh and socializing with friends and family. I also enjoy the challenge of pushing myself to work harder during the month, knowing how hard it is to keep productivity up during it.

Finally, what’s your favorite type of date? (Laughs) That’s actually a very hard question to answer, but I can definitely say that my favorite dates around the world are Saudi dates. Location: Al Mashariq Tower, Riyadh Web: ncpd.org.sa

ARE YOU FEELING WELL? A deep look into the practice of wellness management.

38 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2017

Dr. Walid Fitaihi is the founder and CEO of the International Medical Center (IMC). He’s also the host of the spiritually inspiring Wamahyay show.

We’ve all heard about real estate management, finance management and human resources management. Practically every aspect of our daily lives has been turned into a management discipline. But, have you ever heard of wellness management (Al Afiyah)?

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF WELLNESS?

There are more than 50 prophetic sayings concerning wellness. Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) encouraged us to “Ask God for forgiveness and wellness, for no believer has been granted a better gift than wellness.” Al Abbas bin AbdulMuttalib said “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, teach me something that I may ask Allah for.’ He (PBUH) said: ‘Ask Allah for wellness.’”

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF WELLNESS?

STAFF PHOTO/MOHAMED FAWZY

Wellness isn’t necessarily about the absence of disease and its symptoms as much as it is about achieving the highest attainable status of physical, psychological and spiritual wellbeing. Your overall health is like an iceberg: what you perceive of your state of wellness or illness at the moment is just the small tip of the iceberg that’s visible. You still have the majority of your actual

level of health or illness hiding below the surface. Symptoms that manifest visibly mean your body is already internally consumed and affected by the illness.

THE PURSUIT OF WELLNESS

Every Muslim is responsible for upholding the trust that God has given them regarding their mind, body and soul. According to the great scholar Al Nursi, it’s the trust that was given to man when heaven and earth refused to bear it: “Indeed, we offered the trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but man [undertook to] bear it.” So, the pursuit of wellness in those areas is the greatest form of upholding that trust any of us could fulfill. My dedicated researches and studies over the past three years – by God’s grace – enabled me to prove in a scientific and religious way that living according to divine guidance leads to the uppermost level of physical, mental, psychological and spiritual wellness (Al Afiyah). In fact, living according to this divine guidance brought to us by the Quran will lead us not only to peak levels of physical, psychological and spiritual wellness in our current reality, but will also lead us to wellness in the afterlife as well.

DESTINATIONKSA.COM 39

This is clearly explained in a single verse of the Quran: “Whoever does a righteous deed, whether male or female, and is a believer, We shall, most surely, cause him to live a good life. Moreover, We shall, most surely, recompense with the very best they ever did.” It is indeed God’s promise that those who pursue wellness in life will be rewarded with the same in the afterlife. Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) has also linked the same by saying: “God, I ask you wellness in this life and the Hereafter.”

Managing your wellness requires… Managing your senses; what you permit your eyes to see, your ears to hear and your tongue to utter. It requires managing your feelings of anger and practicing forgiveness and love, all of which are feelings that heal you before benefiting anyone else. As for feelings of stress, fear, jealousy and hate, these are emotions that harm you before harming and ailing anyone else. Managing your sleeping habits both quantitatively and qualitatively, avoiding bad habits and any forms of physiological or behavioral addiction and maintaining your physical and moral cleanliness and purity. Managing your surrounding environment, your place of living, your friends and your

40 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2017

family. They all have great influence on your mental state and way of life. Managing your body and caring for what you eat and drink quantitatively and qualitatively. That you practice giving, which is crucial and wellestablished as having a very positive influence on your health and wellness. Worship in Islam is a collective term which denotes all that is pleasing and beloved to God, the essential element that must be fulfilled in any deed or action in life to qualify as an act of worship is its accordance with these sacred laws, its conformity with the essence of religion, and the validity of its underlying intent. In fact, it is the prostration of the heart and senses in the real life.

Ramadan Firsts: New Experiences It’s Ramadan, and it’s going to be different for some of us! By Sumaiyya Naseem

Ramadan: our most beloved month of the year. This year, because of life changes and growing up, some of us will be experiencing Ramadan a little differently.

THE NEWBIE PROFESSIONAL Whether it’s your first job or your first Ramadan as a working Muslim, this is a new territory for you. • Relaxed Office Hours: Six hours for the private sector and five for the public sector. • Cut the Caffeine: Go for decaf or gahwa after iftar or during suhoor. • Office Iftar: Some companies have an official office iftar. Don’t be shy to initiate one. •Nap Queen/King: Take a 5-10 minute nap when you feel you’re starting to get tired at work. “Before coming to the Kingdom, I always had to study and work while fasting. If you have office during Ramadan, just have a healthy, fulfilling suhoor and plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

42 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2017

Have a nap when you come home after work, if you can. And, like suhoor, have a healthy iftar; include plenty of vegetables and fruits. You should also avoid going out in the midday sun.” - Wardah Al Shaib

MOM, DAD AND BABY If this is your first Ramadan after welcoming a new member to your family, here are ways to make it most memorable: • Capture Their First Ramadan: What’s cuter than a newborn in jalabiya or thobe with shimagh? Dress up your baby in traditional clothes and do a photoshoot with the whole family! • For Moms: If unable to

keep up taraweeh and reading Qur’an, listen to the Qur’an while you’re taking care of your baby or do tasbeeh. • For Dads: Change nappies, surprise her with suhoor in bed and take over iftar or baby duties whenever she needs you to. • For the Family: You can always offer to babysit if the Mom wants to pray taraweeh and make things easy by sending over food for iftar!

Ramadan with Children Karim and Farah are aged 12 and 10, and they fast despite having school. Our rituals include “Ramadan Shopping” during which we buy decorations and outfits. Every year my children participate in the Barakat Trust Fund Children’s Bazar where they sell their own creative works. We also go and distribute meals in the streets before Iftar. Kids really enjoy this month because they experience the meaning of giving and sharing. We also go for iftar with children from orphanages whenever we get the chance.

FASTING FOR THE FIRST TIME! Fasting for the first time is an experience that made us puff up our chests and feel proud. It earned us a lot of respect in the playground. Many kids are fasting for the first time this Ramadan, and here are ways to make it extra fun: • Eid Countdown: Create an Eid Countdown calendar and hang it where they can put a star for each day they fast, and get closer to Eid day. • Iftar Treats: Surprise them with their favorite dish at iftar. • Taraweeh Treats: Develop their Ramadan traditions by encouraging them to tag along to taraweeh, and take them out for ice cream right after. • Date Duty: Assign them the daily task to stuff dates with almonds or to make sure there’s a date on each plate. • Charity Champion: Help them spread happiness and gain ajr by distributing food and water before maghrib.

KIDS’ RAMADAN GOALS • First Iftar • First Taraweeh • Taraweeh x 5 • Extra Good Deeds • Story Time with Mom and Dad • Helping at Iftar

BLOOM: GIFTS BEYOND THE ORDINARY Give the gift of experience with this non-profit. By Sumaiyya Naseem

46 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2017

It’s Ramadan and with this auspicious month comes the tradition of gift giving. Bloom is a gift consultancy non-profit that specializes in the thoughtful gift of experience. You might know them from their recent collaboration with Medd Café and artist Mohanna Tayeb. While working in the community, Bashayer Waly, founder of Bloom, was struck by the materialistic

and shallow world that we’re living in. According to Waly, most people’s interests don’t go beyond make up, beauty, fashion and weekend plans, and that they don’t think about deeper life experiences. “I realized that maybe with more experiences people would have more chances to develop themselves. So with Bloom we initiate experiences that will help people work on themselves,” explains Waly. “I consider Bloom to be a life message rather than just a business.”

So, how exactly does Bloom work?

“When you become our client, we know that you love someone. We study that person and their lifestyle and habits. When we understand the missing element of their life, we work on that element.” Waly’s clients answer several questions and sometimes even get her in touch with friends and loved ones of the gift receivers. The purely confidential process can include a one on one consultation session, in case the initial personality study doesn't provide enough details. Next, Bloom’s team develops a gift plan that is ready for the client to execute.

“We can execute and deliver the gift for clients who are busy. But we really want them to understand the message behind the gift,” clarifies Waly. Bloom’s experience gifts range from stress relieving spa sessions, swimming lessons, career counseling and coaching classes to a surprise visit or holiday package. Bloom’s clients have responded wonderfully to the service. “Our clients who believe in the message are ready to go that extra mile. They know that when the gift is received, their loved one’s face will bloom with happiness.” It’s this joyful reaction that has inspired the name of Waly’s non-profit. Waly is beginning work with Bloom ambassadors who will spread her message across the Kingdom. Volunteers as young as 12 years of age have joined the Bloom team to help with their creative talents and skills. Bashayer Waly’s message to anyone who wants to give a gift is that “You don’t need material things to feel good about life, or a birthday or graduation.” Web: bloom.sa Email: me@bloom.sa bloomsa

JEDDAH READS: PROSE AND PURPOSE Huda Merchant’s project is making our Jeddah more literary. By Sumaiyya Naseem

After a few years of attending school in India, bibliophile Huda Merchant returned to Saudi and discovered that books were limited and student book clubs were non-existent. To fill the literary gap, she formed Jeddah Reads. With a background in media, and along with the help of Dania Al Masri and Fida Al Hassan of Impact with Deeds, Merchant started the project while she was interning at Youth Initiative Group (YIG).

52 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2017

LIBRARY CARD

“They asked me what I’m passionate about and what problems I see in the society that can be tackled using media.” She immediately chose reading and conducted surveys in colleges and offices to identify and understand why there is a lack of a proper reading culture. After graduating, Merchant sat down with Dania Al Masri to develop a clearer approach, but she faced challenges. “It’s difficult to get a team together,” she explains.

People are quite laidback even though they want to help. As a non-Arab, I find language and culture to be an issue. I want Jeddah Reads to be bilingual because I want it to appeal to everyone, unlike some other book campaigns that only target Arabic speakers. — Huda Merchant

Merchant is busy with several projects including literary events, but still finds time to read. Her advice if you want to read more is to always carry a book, and read in the car.

JEDDAH READS PROJECTS Building School Libraries

A lack in school libraries directly results in children not developing a lifelong habit to read. Jeddah Reads has taken up the project to build libraries in private and public schools, sometimes from scratch. The libraries are designed based on space available and will include bi-weekly or monthly bookish activities. They are currently accepting book donations for this purpose.

The Bibliophiles

A book club for 12-13 year olds who find libraries boring. The book club, which meets at the Impacts With Deeds office, has attracted many young readers. The Bibliophiles’ first book, “Finding Audrey” by Sophie Kinsella, helped them understand anxiety.

#50Readers1Question - Video Series

Each video features one reading related question answered by a handful of readers. The videos offer personal insight and contribute to opening dialogue on reading.

Book Fairies

This is an upcoming collaboration with Emma Watson’s Book Fairies initiative. Jeddah Reads’ book fairies will leave books in Careem cabs, cafes and other public spaces for lucky people to pick up.

Book Club in a Bag

A corporate book club in which Jeddah Reads is going to partner with different companies to encourage employees to read for 15-20 minutes every day. Email: jeddahreads@gmail.com jeddahreads

He aims through his pieces to also educate and spread awareness in the youth. Because of his thorough research and accumulated knowledge, Falemban can be considered a go-to to all things associated to the Hijazi heritage, particularly when it comes to lifestyle and clothing.

The Hijazi Ommah The headwear representation of heritage. By Noura Al Joaib

When it comes to headwear, the omama, or ommah as we say in Hijazi, is not merely a fashion statement. Tracing back to centuries, the ommah (the turban-like head wrap) is steeped in tradition with deep cultural roots. Whether demonstrating the religious position of the wearer, to distinguish the tribe the wearer is from, or a simple fashion tribute, there is no denying the significance of the ommah in our culture. To know more about the history of the ommah, the differences and variations, we sat with renowned photographer Mazen Falemban. Falemban is not 58 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2017

your typical photographer. His arcane interest in the Hijazi culture drove him to make a photography documentation of the traditional Hijazi lifestyle and heritage the center of his exhibits. With already six exhibitions in the past, Falemban is currently preparing for his seventh exhibition, planned to take place July of 2018 in Jeddah’s Al Balad. There’s so much one can learn from art, and that’s what Falemban’s work aspires to achieve. His photography is not merely a method to archive the beautiful and deep-rooted heritage of the Hijazi culture.

Falemban tells us that the ommah can be traced back to our ancestors, and are worn by different groups that make up the community. For instance, religious scholars wear the white Ommah, which is exclusively worn by them making it a differentiator. A distinctive ommah is also worn by head of notable heads of families and mayors. Even craftsmen wear one unique to them. The variations are not just in type of textile and color, but also the way the ommah is wrapped – making it both an art and tradition carried down by generations. When it comes to the types of textile used, there are a number that are popular in the region and are usually imported from the city of Aleppo in Syria, or from India. But the best quality are the ones brought in from Syria. As for the prices of ommah fabric, the prices could range from SR 150 – 3,000. On rare occasions, one may opt for a more luxurious choice, like the Sulaimi silk, and that may reach up to SR 5,000. mmaaff92 mazenfelemban

them, and I guess that led to me starting Chef Tee.”

It was in Boston, while studying in Business school, that Al Amodi discovered her passion for cooking. “We had to stay in lockdown many times because of blizzards. That forced me to cook to pass the time.”

From the Amodi family’s secret molokhia recipe to the fresh catch of the Red Sea, Chef Tee’s approach is to infuse local and Middle Eastern ingredients into her culinary creations.

After graduating from business school, Chef Tee found inspiration on the Food Network. Seeing kids on Masterchef Junior make beef wellington - a technically difficult dish - was also motivating for her. She moved to Paris and joined Ferrandi Paris, a culinary arts school.

Since her return earlier this year, Chef Tee has been observing the local food industry.

Culinary school gave her the practical, hands-on experience that kick-started her career as a chef. She worked as an intern at the L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon, a two Michelin star restaurant, and the Les Climats, a one Michelin star restaurant that serves innovative dishes. Chef Tee learned kitchen hygiene and the endless kitchen hard labor including cutting vegetables, skinning large octopuses, removing shells from cravettes, scaling heaps of fish and working the meat station. “When I came back to Jeddah, I realized I wanted to work on the Saudi dishes that I’d craved in my time abroad. I wanted to be innovative with

What you’ll find at the Chef Tee stand is Saudi food with a touch of the foreign: molokhia pastries, crispy saffron shrimps, mgalgal tacos and more.

“We have a market that’s developing. If we get known for our food, the way we’re sharing Saudi art with the world, it will be something that will show the world we’re more than money and oil. Food speaks to the world.” Whether it’s France or Saudi Arabia, the food industry is a male dominated realm. But recently Saudi women like Chef Tee have been taking the step and entering the food scene with their products. “Women make food with love, and people need that. Saudi women must become more of an effective presence in the food industry.” Chef Tee’s words of wisdom to the Saudi restaurateurs and chefs: “If we introduce restaurants that serve Saudi food, our market will grow.” Mob: +966-565551995 Email: talaamodi@gmail.com chef.tee.sa

12 MONTHS to a Healthier You Add or remove a habit every month. By Mai Kholeif

JUNE HABIT: Guilt free indulgence this Ramadan. This Ramadan, your postiftar eating habits can either help you make massive strides towards your health goal, or it can lead to laziness, and even sickness. Take advantage of this holy month, and be good to your body and health. If you are like me, you will crave any form of dessert after iftar. While this is normal, satisfying your sweet tooth is a dangerous game, but it is not off limits. There are several ways to enjoy a deliscious dessert without jeopardizing your overall longterm health goals.

Remember this: What one person considers “healthy”, might not be suitable for another. Someone who actively avoids gluten may not be too concerned about sugar content, whereas another individual who avoids carbs might still indulge in dairy products. The goal is to pre-assess the dessert against your own health objectives. Middle Eastern desserts are traditional in Ramadan, but, along with other sweets, they are saturated with sugar and fat. These sweets are considered empty calories because they offer very little (if any) nutritional value.

If you make smart choices you won’t have to give up sweets entirely this Ramadan.

88 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2017

STAFF PHOTO/ABDULRAHMAN BA'ALI

Portion Control and Total Daily Intake are your new best friends. Have one small piece of your favorite dessert to satisfy the cravings, but don’t make a meal out of it. Make note of the entire sugar intake of the day, not just per-meal intake.

KEEP THIS IN MIND

Fruit Parfait Recipe for a Healthy dessert this Ramadan:

A small piece of dark chocolate is a great option. You can also opt for other treats with nutritional value, such as fresh fruits or Greek yogurt.

INGREDIENTS: 1 cup Greek yogurt 1 cup of your favorite fruits 1 cup of granola or oats

DIRECTIONS: • Cut your fruits into thin slices. • In serving glasses, or bowls, arrange the layers in the following order: yogurt, granola, yogurt, fruit and so on. • Top it off with a drizzle of honey, a dash of cinnamon and roasted almonds. This delightful treat makes a great & nutritious snack filled with protein, carbs and fats and is quick to put together.

You can have your cake, and eat it too. Here are a few other tips to keep it healthy in Ramadan: • Follow the sunnah when breaking your fast by having dates and water. • Eat fruits on an empty stomach instead of after your meal. • Opt for healthier dessert options. • Stay hydrated. • Eat small meals. • Engage in exercises like brisk walking. • Don’t skip suhoor! SPIRITUALITY

Our Favorite Mosques for Taraweeh They are our spiritual checkpoints in Ramadan. By Mohammed Mirza

Whether you frequent your neighborhood mosques or drive to a special one, they are our spiritual rocks during Ramadan. They are retreats where we pray, reflect and recite Qur’an alongside our Muslim brothers and sisters from all over Jeddah. Especially during the last 10 days of Ramadan, getting a spot to pray inside is tough if one does not reach before isha, as the mosque is extremely popular for its taraweeh prayers. There is a spacious open ground nearby, so parking is not much of a hassle. The mosque is well maintained and the caretakers prepare good arrangements for worshippers.

Imam: Nabil Al Refai

Bin Yamani Mosque Imam: Khateeb

Famous reciter Nabil Al Refai leads the taraweeh prayer here. This mosque stands nestled in one of the lanes of Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Street. From the soulful recitation to the moving supplication, they all add up to make this one of the best places to pray taraweeh prayers in Jeddah. 90 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2017

Taqwa Mosque

Umm Al Khair Mosque Imam: Adil Rayyan

Standing next to the now defunct Watani Superstores, parking is a bit of a hassle as the mosque witnesses a large number of worshippers during taraweeh prayers. Sheikh Adil Rayyan who leads taraweeh prayers here is renowned for his recitation all across the Kingdom and abroad.

King Fahd Mosque Imam: Zahrani

Carrying a striking resemblance to the grandiose mosques of Morocco, King Fahd mosque, with its typical Moroccan architecture, is unlike other mosques in Jeddah. Immense yet graceful, the tile-work and open-air courtyard make for a visual treat. The mosque has sufficient space in the male and female praying areas. Sheikh Zahrani’s supplication at the end of the witr prayer deserves a special mention. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 91

Anany Mosque Imam: Hani Al Refai

Also known as the Golden Mosque, after its large goldencolored dome, the mosque is popular for taraweeh largely because of its imam, Hani Al Refai. It is one of the city’s largest mosques and can accommodate a large number of worshippers. Because of its close proximity to Corniche, families with children can be seen sitting outside listening to the recitation. Sheikh Basfer’s recitation has attracted a lot of worshippers over the years. The colored tiles and elegant mimbar inside add splendor to the mosque. Despite being large in size, the prayer area does get a bit crammed, so it’s better to be early to the prayers here. And, if the weather is good then you can always pray on its courtyard outside. 92 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2017

Shoaibi Mosque

Imam: Abdullah Basfer

Baghlaf Mosque Imam: Darweesh

The mosque is dimly lit on the outside, however, on the inside, it is so brightly lit that it kind of catches the first-time visitors off-guard. It rarely sees large crowds, so it's ideal for those looking for a tranquil and peaceful praying space.

A HEALTHY AND HYDRATED RAMADAN Be kind to your tummy! By Haseena Bano

Like most of us, fasting probably makes it difficult to think about your futoor and suhoor meals beyond opportunities to eat, let alone as ways to try and be healthy. But, did you know Ramadan can be the perfect opportunity to follow a natural lifestyle that boosts up your health?

WATER IS MEDICINE

Pure water is the world’s first and foremost medicine. Keep yourself hydrated with an ample quantity of water and natural fluids (like fresh fruit juices) this Ramadan. You should be very cautious with your fluid intake and how you keep yourself hydrated.

Carbonated drinks like sodas contain processed sugars which is a major cause of obesity.

2. Make sure suhoor has a good combination of complex carbohydrates and proteins.

KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR FUTOOR AND SUHOOR

3. Try to always drink a full

Futoor is meant for eating our favorite foods to maximum capacity and satisfying our cravings after 12-16 hours of fasting, isn’t it? Sort of. You should satiate your hunger but you have to be extra vigilant or else risk developing some very unhealthy eating habits like overeating.

As far as diet is concerned your diet plan should have the following attributes: 1. Limit the salt intake during suhoor.

glass of water at the beginning and end of suhoor.

4. Minimize or cut out all fried foods. 5. Eat in moderation always. 6. Spread out your futoor meal. Break your fast with some dates and water, then take a break of 5-10 minutes before eating some more.

RAMADAN IS ABOUT SIMPLICITY, SO SIMPLIFY YOUR MEALS.

STAFF PHOTO/ABDULRAHMAN BA'ALI

Get creative and try new flavors.

The Man Who Shot King Abdulaziz’s First Photograph

WILLIAM SHAKESPEAR Not the poet. By Mohammed Mirza

Ibn Saud’s (AbdalAziz Ibn Saud’s) army on the march near Habl.

Captain William Henry Irvine Shakespear (1878-1915).

Born in Bombay, Shakespear served in many posts in British India before finally making his way to the interiors of Arabia. Fluent in multiple languages including Arabic and working as a British Political Agent in Kuwait, William Shakespear went on many expeditions to the Arabian heartland. His most famous journey is one wherein he traveled from Kuwait to the Red Sea, mapping and documenting many areas that 102 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2017

were unexplored by Europeans. Prior to this, he even made an overland journey to England traveling through Persia, Turkey and Europe on his Rover motorcar. It was this very car that he used for many of his travels in the Arabian desert. During these expeditions, he became acquainted with King Abdulaziz, who was at that time the Emir of Najd. He mapped and studied the region in great detail and also managed to convince the future King to allow him to shoot his first photograph. This was taken by his plate camera.

Shakespear seemed fond of Ibn Saud, who he described as “a fair, handsome man... of genial and very courteous manner.” The companionship and camaraderie between the two men laid the groundwork for the relationship that was to develop between Saudi Arabia and Britain. Shakespear died in the Battle of Jarrab, he was only 37. Shortly after his death, a treaty drafted by him was signed between Britain and Ibn Saud that gave the Saudi rule in Arabia its first international recognition.

He has his name inevitably etched with Saudi Arabia’s formation years. He played a key role not only by taking one of the first photographs of many places in inland Arabia but also for trying to get Britain to recognize the growing power of Ibn Saud.
