Our Fashion section features abayas and thobes from some of Jeddah’s top designers. If your wardrobe just needs a creative update, consider adopting the turban in any fabric or color, which accents your outfit – you’ll stand out in style. Ramadan with its emphasis on helping the less fortunate is also a wonderful time to renew your commitment to honoring the environment…so ‘green’ your iftars and eliminate needless waste.

THOUGHTS TO P O N D E R

Know your legal rights to live peacefully in Jeddah Do you know your rights? For example, if you were involved in a car accident…what would you do? You should always wait for the police to arrive and write down the details of the accident - the police officer will then decide which driver was at fault. However, there is a perception that the authorities may treat foreigners differently from Saudis. Even though it is supposed to be equal between locals and foreigners, the

priority is usually given to the Saudi driver. Since 2011, Saudi Arabia has begun to seriously address the issue of human rights violations, except in two areas concerning religion. The right of freedom of religion and the inter-marriage between Muslims and non-Muslims both remain controversial topics. However, women are taking a step forward as they have recently been granted the right to vote in municipal elections.

Thumbs up to... Efficient Ambulances

We have recently heard reassuring reports of the public ambulance service being extremely efficient and professional. This should go without saying of course, but they dismally haven’t had a decent reputation. What happened was that after calling 997, two cars, one small faster car and a large ambulance arrived in less than ten minutes. A team of 3 fully equipped and trained professionals and their higher-ranking leader swiftly acted and handled the patient with the utmost care. They allowed a family member to ride with them as they, almost nerve-rackingly, sped through the city and passed all the red lights. By the time their work was done they left a significant impression, the team was kind and ethically sound and were the type of people who could be trusted.

Thumbs Down to... The Fire Department

With all the recent road and drainage improvements in Jeddah, there still remain important safety measures, which should be prioritized. Although the Emergency and Police are rapid first responders - the Fire Department still needs to work on their speed. They’re usually too late to reach a location due to the lack of fire stations in some areas. An apartment in Tahliah district was recently on fire and the family immediately called for help, however it took the rescuers 20 minutes to get there. In the meantime, the entire apartment was in flames! Safety is the concern when lives are at stake - each district in Jeddah needs to have at least one fully staffed, well-equipped fire station. 8

Ramadan Myths & Facts By Angelic Salha

Along with the first sighting of this month’s crescent moon comes the period anticipated by Muslims worldwide: Ramadan. The month of Ramadan is a time for peace, reflection and fasting. Here are a few myths and facts about this holy month.

Myth

Myth

Fact

Fact

Myth

Myth

Ramadan requires complete fasting for 30 days.

While the holy month does require Muslims to fast (the fast is also known as sawm), it is only done during the daytime hours. Many Muslims eat suhur (the meal eaten before daybreak) and iftar (the evening meal when Muslims break their fast). Basically, eating before sunrise and after sunset are the parameters of the fasting period.

Everybody fasts no matter what!

Fact

While Islam requires fasting during this time, not everybody is required to participate. Young children, seniors, pregnant women, diabetics, others with medical needs and travellers are exempt. If possible, a person is expected to make up the lost time when they are able by fasting at other times of the year, or feeding the hungry or helping the less fortunate in any way possible.

Myth

Ramadan falls at the same time every year.

Fact

Ramadan actually takes place at a different time every year. This is due to the Islamic lunar calendar, which follows the phases of the moon. During the ninth month of the (Hijri) year, the first crescent moon (Hilal) is when the holiday begins. The local news announces it so that people can start their Ramadan. 18 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Muslims fast because the religion says so. While fasting is the fourth pillar of Islam, there is a lot more to Ramadan than just abstaining from food and drink. Ramadan is a time for prayer, reflecting upon the religion, cleansing the spirit, remembering others who are in poverty and the less fortunate, and spending time with family and friends. Ramadan is considered the holiest time of the year.

Ramadan requires Muslims to only abstain from food and drink.

Fact

While some people abstain from food and drink, others additionally cut out everything that can distract them from their religious devotion. This can include listening to music, watching TV and. Many Muslims also read the entire Qur’an during this time. Ramadan is about cleansing the body and soul while strengthening the spiritual connection with God, family and community.

Myth

Using toothpaste during the daytime in Ramadan is not allowed.

Fact

There is no problem in that as long as care is taken that nothing is swallowed, just as it is legislated for the fasting person to use the siwak (tooth stick) in the beginning of the day as well as at the end of the day. “It is a means of purifying the mouth, pleasing to the Lord.” (Bukhari, Sawm, 27).

Myth

We should STOP eating and START fasting after the first fajur (dusk) calling.

Swallowing your own saliva is forbidden during fasting.

TIPS for Non-Muslims Non-Muslim Tips for Ramadan

• Cars park everywhere during Iftar, so understand that a 2-lane road could be completely blocked with parked cars outside a mosque.

There are usually two Muslim prayer callings. The first calling is to announce prayer time, then the second calling is for people to start praying, but in Ramadan fajur prayer has two callings to alert people. The first fajur calling is to tell people that fasting begins soon and the second is for people to actually stop eating and drinking in order to start their fasting. After the second calling, people pray fajur just like the rest of the five prayers.

Saudi Arabia is an Islamic country, however many non-Muslims live in or visit the Kingdom. Here are some handy tips to navigate this special month. • Ramadan is based upon the lunar calendar so the dates change from year to year. Travellers can find this information beforehand and adjust their plans accordingly. Residents can find out the days in local papers, radio and TV. • Learn the Islamic “dos & don’ts” of the holiday. You are not required to participate in the Islamic laws, but you should understand what is insulting to Muslims while they are fasting. Business will take things into account and usually provide food/drink for non-fasting individuals. • Non-Muslims are not required to fast, however, it’s expected that they respect their Muslim friends and neighbours’ beliefs. Muslims will appreciate it if you don’t eat, drink or smoke in front of them during their fasting time. • Don’t get upset that your neighbours eat and socialize after midnight. The day begins after Iftar (sunset) and it is normal to see people up all night visiting friends and relatives in order to partake of the social connections important during Ramadan. 20 DESTINATION JEDDAH

There is no problem in swallowing one’s saliva and there isn’t any difference in opinion between the People of Knowledge due to the difficulty and impossibility of guarding against that.

• Don’t walk around in provocative clothes, especially in your work environment or when attending an iftar feast. During Ramadan, this type of clothing is insulting because fasting for Muslims is about abstaining with all five senses. • Most restaurants are closed during the daytime except catering places where you can place an order for later pick up.

Sheikh Sahl Zain Yassin:

Balancing Faith and the Future of Society By Amber Shahid

Profile: Who: Sheikh Sahl Zain Yassin What: An Imam and headmaster of Jeddah Knowledge School’s boys’ section Education: BA Islamic Law – King Abdul Aziz University, MA Education Administration, PhD Marriage Counseling Family: Happily Married with three children 22 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Sheikh Sahl Zain Yassin, 41, is the Imam of the Sultan Mosque, the Head Master of the Boys Section at the Jeddah Knowledge School, and a marriage counselor. He fulfills his diverse roles with his underlying faith and a commitment to the betterment of Saudi society. His passion for religion is coupled with his emphasis on education; he feels that a healthy society can only flourish with tolerant, educated people of faith. Yassin enjoyed growing up in a large family with his 10 siblings in Madinah before his father moved to Jeddah for business. He began his formal education in Jeddah, however, at the age of 15 he enrolled himself with Sheikh Abdullah Basfar in order to fulfill his longstanding wish to memorize the Quran. After only one year, Yassin completed his goal – he considers this his greatest achievement to date. In addition, Yassin acquired the ‘Sanad’ designation, which certifies the accuracy of his Quran recitation. He is renowned in Jeddah for his accurate and melodious Quran recitation. His recitations are available on YouTube and two audio formats (one recorded studio version and a Taraweeh recording.) Yasin always has had a passion for Islam; he switched from Engineering to Islamic Law for his bachelor’s degree from King Abdul Aziz University. He went to America for his Master’s in Education Administration and a PhD in Marriage Counseling. Yassin views his role as a ‘Sheikh’ as a person who connects the people with Allah by conveying His message and helping them attain the right balance in life. “A Sheikh’s role is very comprehensive. It is not just leading the prayer, but also educating the society – a peaceful society. He should be educating the people to help them

fight the difficult times with faith. Enlightening the people, uniting them and preaching to them are the central roles of a sheikh. It is a cultural call because the excessive use of media and social media is leading people to isolate themselves,” he adds. Yassin believes that a Sheikh should be open-minded and welcome people’s suggestions in order to help society to flourish. Talking about Ramadan, Yassin says it is like a gas tank, which should be filled with faith for the rest of the year. “One should make the most of it by gaining more Islamic knowledge and hasanat, getting closer to Allah and tying a strong relationship with Allah. Looking into the real meaning of meditation, reading Quran, indulging in different virtuous deeds and worshipping during Ramadan and carrying it through for the rest of the year can help in maintaining the right balance in life. It is disturbing to see people flipping the daily routine in Ramadan, staying up the whole night and sleeping the whole day. It is becoming cultural. It is understandable, but people are missing the beauty and essence of the fast this way. People want to be called ‘fasters’ without even going through the difficulties of fast. This needs to be changed,” he comments. Being in the field of education, Yassin is on the front-lines of the crucial task of encouraging the right balance between an Islamic and a formal education.

A Day in the Life: Everyone is claiming to have 5:30 am: Out of bed maintained the balance between 7:00 - 4:00 pm: At work after dropping the two, but its very difficult to find such schools. HOW TO HAVE A

FABULOUS

RAMADAN SUMMER!

By Rayan Khayat

Our favorite month of the year, Ramadan, is usually filled with as much joy as it is with piousness, and this year, we’ll experience the unique circumstance of it overlapping with another favorite time, our summer vacation. For many, it’s the only time they have off so they’re planning to have a good time, and even though Ramadan has its commitments, it’s usually a merry time when families and friends gather and there are so many different happenings around town - so the reasons it will be a great summer are even doubled! Here we’ve put together a list of creative ideas that will hopefully make this Ramadan Summer more unique and exciting!

Get in the kitchen with the family! Bake and cook your favorite Ramadan dishes and finally learn the recipes. Compile them into a handy booklet to distribute to the rest of the family. Have something completely different for ‘futoor,’ create or buy something unique that you and your family haven’t tried before. Overall, have more large gatherings with friends and families, don’t over think the requirements, getting together is more important. Invite friends’ and families’ kids over for a traditional evening with lanterns, ‘fawazeer,’ sweets and traditional clothes.

5 6 7

Creatively decorate the house with Ramadan themed ideas. Keep a large Ramadan calendar and cross off each night with stickers or markers. Get together for large game night tournaments such as cards or ‘keram.’ Get into activities that aren’t physically strenuous such as painting, drawing, crafts, photography, and projects that are Ramadan themed. Create albums of Ramadan memories.

8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15

Have a ‘Tash ma Tash’ marathon and watch your favorites. Get involved with charitable organizations and come up with innovative benefits for those in need. Spend the whole day at the beach. You can have a barbeque ‘iftar’ or sahoor,’ and swim at the pool later in the evening. Sign up for the different art or cooking classes that are available.

Take advantage of the late shopping hours and invest in a new wardrobe or new interiors. Why not visit the (Medfa’) the ceremonial cannon fired at the beginning of Ramadan. Go downtown and visit Al-Balad with some friends. Take a weekend trip in a big group to Al-Medinah, Makkah, Abha, or Al-Taif. DESTINATION JEDDAH 37

Haya Couture Back to Basics

For the well-dressed Saudi woman, no outfit is complete without donning an abaya to leave her home. While abaya designs have evolved over the years – there is no one who has perfected the art of combining elegance with simplicity more than Haya Al-Rajhi. Her innovative use of incorporating the kimono style along with sumptuous satins to line or accessorize the basic black abaya have propelled her designs to the forefront of Jeddah’s designers. She started her journey in 2001 with a push from her friends who strongly believed in her creativity. Haya joined a local exhibition to showcase her new line and her designs have been in demand ever since. After her first line was launched, her abayas have become a well-known trademark among Jeddah’s fashionistas. Haya pours her energy and efforts into each item; each abaya has her own special touch which makes her line popular and unique. She was one of the first abaya designers who reintroduced the ‘mashlah’ and recreated the abaya with a traditional Saudi, yet modern look. To Haya, quality comes before quantity. This attention to detail makes her abayas stand out from the rest. Because of her reasonable prices, people don’t pay much attention to how to handle it from washing and pressing it, however, she uses the best material, that’s why treating each piece with care is important. Turban Fashion By Halah Gandeel

The Original Turban

The History of the Turban Turbans have been a cycled trend of fashion long before its use as the hijab that we know today. Our Muslim ancestors originally wore the turban as a form of protection from the hot sun and desert sand. As a part of their religious attire, they always left the forehead exposed to allow it to touch the ground during prayer. The colors of the fabrics ranged in accordance to class, education and occasion. By the late 18th century, western trade with India introduced the beginning of the turban as a glamorous fashion accessory, a style pinoeered by Marie Antoinette, Whether you choose to wear it as a form of Hijab or simply a fashion accessory, the turban has made its trendy way through our modern era. 44 DESTINATION JEDDAH

How to tie a Turban Ilustration by Rayan Khayat

[You can use a scarf or experiment with different kinds of fabrics, as long as it’s square shaped]

Fold the fabric in half to make a triangle You can keep your hair down or tie it in a bun like this.

Hold both ends of the triangle and pull them on opposite sides, keeping the middle tucked underneath.

Place it back to front with the middle angle of the triangle on your forehead.

Tie the ends firmly on the front.

Pull the ends sideways and tie them at the back to secure the entire twist. Pull the extra piece of fabric on the front upwards and tuck it in. DESTINATION JEDDAH 45

Mouth-Watering

Middle Eastern Sweets By Angelic Salha

“Life is uncertain; always eat your dessert first.” - Ernestine Ulmer The Ramadan iftar table is incomplete without a variety of Middle-Eastern desserts. No matter how health-conscious or weight-conscious you are…Ramadan is the time to indulge your sweet tooth. Family favorites as well as gourmet innovations grace the tables of Jeddahwis at this time of the year. Many of these dishes are internationally famous and are appreciated all over the world.

KUNAFAH:

BASBOUSA:

Kunafah is a traditional Arabic shredded pastry soaked in butter, baked, and then marinated in sweet syrup. The pastry usually incorporates white cheese such as Nabulsi cheese, fresh cream (quishta), banana, green pistachios, or nuts. Sugar syrup is poured on the pastry after baking.

This traditional dessert, which is also called Nammoura in Lebanon, is made with semolina as a main ingredient, baked, then drenched with sugar syrup. Almonds and lemon juice are an important part of the traditional recipe. Basbousa is usually available in two flavors. The original type is usually topped with almonds. The other type is mixed with coconut flakes.

DJ RECOMMENDS:

-Banana-filled Kunafah - Al-Samadi and Bait Al-Kunafah (Kunafah House) -Cheese-filled Kunafah - Al-Mahawi and Bait Al-Kunafah (Kunafah House)

HALAWAT AL-JUBN:

MAMOUL:

This is another Ramadan favorite. Originally from Lebanon, this delicious sweet is made from cheese (unsalted akawi cheese or mozzarella) mixed with semolina, sugar and rose water and is then stuffed with quishta (fresh cream). This chewy cheese dough is wrapped around quishta and garnished with rose blossom, pistachios, and sweetened with sheera (sugar syrup).

There is a quote that says, “Cookies are made of butter and love.” This saying describes mamoul perfectly! These delicious Arabic cookies are always served on the happiest occasions. They are usually round or oval shaped, filled with dates, pistachios, or walnuts, and topped with powdered sugar. They can also be filled with almonds or figs. To tell the difference between the fillings, each type is made into a different shape. The walnut-filled ones are shaped in the form of a dome with a rounded top, while the date-filled one takes the form of a dome with a flat top and the pistachio-filled one has a relatively elongated oval shape.

DJ RECOMMENDS:

Al-Mahawi and Halawani Ikhwan Note: Making it at home is a bit of a hassle and the store bought version is also really good and sometimes tastes better.

DJ RECOMMENDS:

If you can get your hands on the homemade version of Mamoul, then you are in luck! Sometimes you can find them at stands in shopping malls or bazaars.

BAKLAWA (BAKLAVA): The most internationally known MiddleEastern sweet is baklawa. It’s a rich sweet pastry made of layers of filo pastry brushed with melted butter that’s filled with chopped nuts, baked, and then sweetened with syrup or honey. There are many different types depending on the filling. There is baklawa pistachio, baklawa walnut, finger baklawa, mini roses, bird’s nest, and burma baklawa.

Fasting Through all Our Senses By Angelic Salha

“O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint.” Surat Al-Baqarah Verse 182 Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection and worship. Muslims are expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam and to avoid obscene and irreligious sights and sounds. Fasting traditionally means eliminating food for a given time period as a way to clean out the body and give it a rest. So what about our other senses? Is fasting just about eating and drinking or does it go deeper than that? Fasting feeds the soul and cleanses the body; it’s the perfect detox for the system and its spiritual reasons are what actually make the difference. Fasting helps explore one’s relationship to food and to one’s Self. It pushes to resistance of all temptations and purifies both thoughts and actions. Fasting is known to redirect the heart away from worldly activities, its purpose being to cleanse the inner soul and free it from harm. It also teaches Muslims to practice self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate; that’s why actions of charity (Zakat) are highly encouraged.

72 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Usually we think that we only “eat” through our mouths, that our meals are the only “food” our bodies get. However, what we hear, see, touch and smell - all these things are taken into our bodies as nurtures. Food brings us health of the body, so do pure sights, sounds and other stimuli bring us health of the mind, heart and soul. Therefore, when we undertake a fast, we must purify the food that we take in through our eyes, ears, nose and hands as we are of the food that we take in through our mouths. Fasting through our senses completes our fast but what about our soul? Isolating our mind from what ever surrounds us is a great start… Our brain is our main tool, its what keeps us up all night and distracts us all day when it’s fully occupied. Releasing these thoughts helps ease our confusion. Giving our main tool a break is what brings our soul to peace. So by purifying our bodies from food, our heart from darkness and our mind from vagueness we reach to our ultimate harmony. Islam religion is a peaceful and easy religion to practice. After understanding the guidelines of it, you’ll find that it’s not so hard after all. By completing the fasting pillar you’ll understand the real value of this amazing pillar that won’t deprive you from the things you love yet it will make you put your priorities before your worldly needs.

How to Have a Great Ramadan Abroad By Rayan Khayat

Spending Ramadan at home traditionally equates to watching Ramadan TV serials, socializing with the same group of family and friends, and basically reliving every Ramadan, which has gone before. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with celebrating this month in the customary manner…but spending the Holy month in a different place has the potential to be unique, especially if you are already vacationing abroad. Every year Muslims all around the world celebrate and fast during Ramadan, and it’s just a matter of finding fellow fasters and the right restaurants to recreate the Ramadan experience. Here are some tips to make the most out of your far-off Ramadan Summer. If you’re alone or in a small group, try meeting up with others you perhaps distantly know or even with new people. It’s easier to fast when you’re with others; Ramadan is not a time to isolate yourself. Look up nearby Islamic cultural centers for information, activities and events. No matter where in the world you are – you can find a mosque or Islamic cultural center. If you are feeling nostalgic, try and recreate the atmosphere of Ramadan at home as much as possible through decorations, traditional incense “bukhoor,” or putting on Arabic TV channels.

76 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Find a Middle Eastern restaurant, (Lebanese, Moroccan, or even Iranian or Afghani) and see if they have Ramadan specials. It will be a great fallback to enjoy some Arab cuisine and atmosphere, plus you may strike up an acquaintance with fellow fasters/travelers. Find an exotic food store if you have access to a kitchen and cook your favorite Ramadan dishes. It’s a chance to learn some of your family’s special recipes! Find a relaxed, friendly spot that stays open late, where you can hang out, enjoy the evening ambiance, and have a late dinner or early ‘sahoor.’ Don’t over exert yourself – Ramadan is not the time to attempt to conquer Mt. Everest or hike the Grand Canyon! It is preferable to go somewhere with pleasant weather where you don’t have to do too much physical activity; stick to walking in the shade and rest frequently.

Keep your energy up according to your schedule. Eat light snacks throughout the evening. Hydrate yourself before and after the fast; dehydration and headaches don’t have to be a hallmark of Ramadan with the right preparation and forethought.

In Islam, it is permitted for Muslims to not fast if they are travelling during Ramadan. However, if they have the ability to fast, then it is preferable to do so. Muslims have the opportunity to make up for the days they missed when they have returned home. DESTINATION JEDDAH 77

Beauty Tip ! Tip: To fully remove mascara, wrap a cotton pad in a tissue THEN saturate it with eye makeup remover. Wrapping the cotton pad in tissue prevents the cotton from leaving lint behind. Hold the pad over your eyes for five seconds, and then gently rub them left and right. Finally, wash your face with your usual facial cleanser. Don’t forget to use an eye cream afterwards.

Q&A Q: I hate it when my eye makeup runs. What can I do to prevent this?

A: Eye makeup can run for several reasons the weather, watery eyes or just oily skin. To create a dry, grease-free surface, remember that before applying any kind of liner, prep your upper and lower lids with a microscopic amount of foundation and then set it with a translucent powder (colorless powder). After you have applied the liner, dust again with a bit of translucent powder – which will hold it all in place. If you don’t like layering on foundation and powder, set your liner by tracing powder shadow in the same shade directly on top of it. For super-long lasting liner, try this: Stroke on a pencil liner first, apply powder liner or eye shadow over that, and then top it all off with liquid eye liner. Works like a charm.

Slimming down

BEFORE EID By Rayan Karkadan

Ramadan is here, and we’re supposed to be eating less, losing weight and looking all good for Eid right? I wish! The reality is, for some reason, we tend to over eat, go to endless dinner parties and all Eid plans are usually aborted by day 3 or so. But we at DJ want this year to be different, and take you hand in hand to break this vicious cycle and get you looking great for your Eid vacation! There are simple things you could do to lose a ton of weight in this holy month. So strap yourself in and follow us as we give you 5 ways to start slimming down during the month of Ramadan

THE CHEF NEEDS A REF Wouldn’t it be wonderful if every time you cooked you could have a referee that would call a foul every time you did something that caused you to gain weight? Since that won’t happen anytime soon, let’s go over some simple ways to adjust the ways we cook to help us lose weight. We all love our samboosa. Try doing them in the oven instead of frying them. 30 days of less oil will make a big difference on the scale. If you must, another idea is to use frying spray, which is low in calories (almost 1 calorie only). Think about how many foods we fry in Ramadan, and how much weight we could save with these simple adjustments. Finally, when eating ‘fool’ (mashed beans) try using brown bread, and use olive oil instead of regular oil or ghee on the beans. Very simple but effective changes that you’ll thank us for later.

TIP: Use frying spray for oven baked samboosas (It’s almost 1 calorie only).

EATING OUT AND ABOUT

QUIC KES

T WAY We all love the family atmosphere HEAL TO STAY T of Ramadan and how the holy EATIN HY WHEN G OU month brings members of the TI ORDE R GR S TO family out of their busy lives I L FOOD LED and back together. What better O S ALAD R way to do that than eating out at S. one of Jeddah’s beautiful restaurants. Good news is that eating out doesn’t always mean unhealthy weight gain if we’re careful and make the right choices while still enjoying delicious food and laughs with the fam. The quickest and most common way to eat out and healthy is choosing grilled foods. Take a trip to Halawani Cuisine and order anything from shish tawooq, lamb or mixed grill. Start it off with a tabboolah or fattoush and have some fresh juice. Or if you’re visiting an international franchise (Chillis, Applebess, etc.) order one of their large Caesar salads with the dressing on the side. Or try ordering a grilled platter with no sides or additions. Keep it simple, fresh and most of all delicious and enjoyable!

BREA YOUR KING FAS DATE S AND T TO THEN WATE R P YOUR RAY, GIVE , S STOM THE F EELIN ACH G OF F

Due to the functioning of satiety centers in the brain, a person usually feels how full they are 20 mins after they ULLN ESS start eating no matter how much or how little is eaten. So if you pace yourself and break your fast with just some dates, water, laban or coffee then pray and wait a bit, you’ll be able to asses how full you are and decide whether to continue eating or not.

PUT THE MUTE ON “TOOT” Ever since I was born, Ramadan has been tied to a certain red, sweet cold drink served at breakfast. I’m sure you know that we’re referring to the ‘toot’ raspberry drink, Vimto or other similar drinks. While we all enjoy its tasty pleasure, there is a small detail you need to know if you’re trying to stay healthy and fit for Eid. Ok, a big detail! The reality is that all this drink consists of is water + sugar + artificial colors. There is no natural component, and all the extra sugar is sure to make you gain weight and look less like what you’re aiming for. While it might be difficult to let go of a tradition, keep in mind it’s a sacrifice you must commit to, to get that shape and health you want in time for the holidays. A simple solution is to get 3 or 4 varieties of freshly squeezed juices from special places all over Jeddah. You can mix and match as you please and they are quite delicious!

TIP: To stay healthy and fit, always consider freshly squeezed juices.

THE 20 -MINUTE RULE: PRAY THEN PLAY In Ramadan you will find that some families eat a couple of bites, drink some water and then pray Maghreb and continue with their meal afterwards. Other families eat right after Maghreb at once. While this is usually left up to tradition you might want to think about how you’re eating. The first way is actually better. Here is why:

20-MINUTES ACTIVE TO LOOK ATTRACTIVE Many of us find it difficult to make time in our Ramadan schedules to exercise. But we’ll let you in on a little secret that will probably convince you to move around a little more. Exercising during fasting hours = almost 4x your exercise on regular days. That’s right! Running, walking, cycling, swimming or rope jumping for just 20 mins while you’re fasting (before Iftar preferably) will burn the amount of fat and weight you would burn in an hour on regular days. The reason behind this is that the body has little blood sugar while fasting, so it quickly shifts to burning fat right away for fuel during fasting hours. If you really want some great results, we suggest you exercise twice a day: 20 mins before iftar, and 30 mins during the night. You will not regret this when you look in the mirror come Eid!

TIP: Exercising during fasting hours =

almost 4x your exercise on regular days. So there you have it! 5 easy adjustments you can make that will make a bigger difference than you will ever imagine. Don’t worry; we don’t want anything in return, except for you to feel amazing, fit and healthy in your new Eid clothes. So keep eating, keep living, keep moving and enjoy the compliments. Happy holidays in advance, and Ramadan Kareem and Eid Mubarak DESTINATION JEDDAH 85

3. Ensure that both your Ramadan meals contain easily digested protein and, depending upon body composition goals, some complex carbohydrates and essential fats. Ramadan isn’t a synonym for sugar and processed food abuse, so go for natural fats and unprocessed options. Figs They are a great source of fiber and can support healthy blood sugar levels.

increases good cholesterol while lowering bad cholesterol. It’s better to add it to food after it has been cooked.

Train to win, eat to get Lean and get in your best ever shape as fast as humanly possible

is after breakfast (your first meal of the day). If you are due to follow a meal with a hard workout, something like a whey shake with essential fats, an apple and a handful of nuts would be great.

4. Don’t even try breaking world records in the

gym during Ramadan, bear in mind that our energy levels won’t be the same. My advice would be to keep your training very simple and fun - focus more on maintenance work.

5. Workout duration during Ramadan

should be kept short. Get your workout done in under an hour - preferably aim for 45 minutes of good work.

6. Make sure that you drink plenty of

water during the time that you are allowed to drink. Try as much as you can to keep yourself HYDRATED. A good goal for a 90kg man should be about 3 liters of water between sunset and sunrise.

7. I’ve seen people getting into a major panic

before Ramadan, thinking that their hard earned results will go down the drain. It is very possible to benefit from good nutrition, supplementation and exercise during the holy month. Follow these simple rules and you won’t get it wrong.

Greening Your Ramadan

Green Living

By Angelic Salha

“Now, behold! Your Lord said to the angels: I am placing upon the earth a human successor to steward it.” Surat Al-Baqarah Verse 30

Muslims have had the responsibility to be ‘Green’ and environmentally friendly long before these terms became as common as they are today. Islam encouraged people to take care of their environment and all its creatures from its earliest roots almost 2,000 years ago. It advised Muslims to be moderate and embrace the ideal of ‘less is better.’ Ramadan is a welcome reminder to appreciate the basic blessings of food and water, it’s also a chance for Muslims to strengthen their faith and reconnect with God and His creations. By ‘greening’ your Ramadan, you’re actually practicing the commands in the Qur’an. Hundreds of verses in the Qur’an describe how nature, clay (the earth), and water, are a part of us and in need of preservation, which means that Muslims are supposed to protect the Earth’s provisions from which they survive. Numerous ‘hadith’ (sayings) of a true environmentalist, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), also teach us to have a deep and longstanding respect for the natural world. Preservation is therefore more than a good policy recommendation – it is a commandment from God. The whole idea of being a Muslim activist is taking control of what you use, what you eat, what you do, where you go, and what you affect. And Ramadan is the greatest training ground for consciously making better choices as consumers and being more earth-friendly.

How to Green your Ramadan: 1. Eliminate Waste Buy less, use less, and then recycle what’s left behind. As it says in the Qur’an: “Eat and drink, but waste not by excess, for Allah loves not the wasters.” Surat Al-’Araf Verse 31 This advice applies to everything: food, water, clothes, books etc. Don’t go overboard during Ramadan – shop wisely.

2. Eat Locally For breaking fast, or ‘iftar’, there is tendency for people to overeat, but try to keep things to a minimum, as you never eat as much as you think you will. Never shop when you’re hungry – you will over-estimate how much you need and end up making too much! So, cut out a third of what you planned to make and remember that you don’t have to stuff yourself to feel full. Try to change your routine and purchase local, organic food, therefore supporting your local economy.

3. Reduce Energy Consumption There are many ways to reduce your energy consumption throughout Ramadan. Whether with electricity or transportation, you can always use less. Turning the air conditioner on only when you are at home or sleeping will reduce your energy bills. Closing blinds, turning off lights, and using fans to circulate air will also keep your home cool. Instead of taking your car to the mosque, consider walking and remember that you are blessed for every step you walk to the mosque, not every mile you travel in a car.

4. Green at Work Remind your colleagues of fasting-inspired ethics such as reusing the blank side of printed papers and recycling cups and packaging. Suggest purchasing more eco-friendly stationery such as recycled envelopes and staplers. Simple things like replacing bulbs with low energy ones will reduce electricity bills; during the summer heat, everyone will want air conditioners, but opening up windows occasionally is healthier for the mind.

5. Use Less Water Although it is important to remain hydrated during Ramadan, don’t waste your money on bottled water because it wastes energy. Be careful when making wudhoo, the Prophet made wudhoo with only half a litre of water and taught Muslims to conserve water, even at a running spring.

6. Spread the Message Ask your imam to do a khutba (sermon) on the issue of caring for the environment. Conveying the basics of stewardship and encouraging Muslims to become more aware of their environment and the impact their behaviour has on the world is a necessary reminder that everyone has a role to play, right here and right now. ‘Greater indeed than the creation of man is the creation of the heavens and the earth.’ Surat Ghfir Verse 57
