February in Jeddah Blue skies, cool breezes, and time to enjoy the great outdoors. My suggestion is to enjoy this issue of Destination Jeddah at an outdoor café or by the beach or even exploring the surrounding desert. .. This month we turn the spotlight on some successful local businesses in a bid to encourage entrepreneurship in our city. The sky is no limit if you have a good product and the determination to work hard towards your goals. Read about FOCKS Creative House, Arabia 500, and Toby by Hatem Alakeem and be inspired! Join us as we explore the Jeddah al fresco dining scene; there are plenty of old favorites as well as some outstanding newcomers to visit. The culinary choices continue to grow along with the population, so don’t miss out on the new tastes out there. I never need an excuse to sample a fresh take on some of my favorite dishes, and neither should you, especially when we’re truly spoilt for choice in Jeddah. Take advantage of our winter weather, whether it’s to exercise, dine al fresco, or enjoy some cool weather clothing… these are the months which you’ll be dreaming about in July!

Reader’s Feedback Miss Enas, Greetings with Love and Peace!!! I would like to give my two thumbs up for supporting the Anti-littering Campaign. Though Jeddah is not my own country I proudly join the campaign for I believe that this is not just about beautifying the city but saving mother nature for the next generation. In my year of stay here, I can say that DJ is the number one informative yet fashionable creative reading material that cares for the reader and the society as well. Looking forward to your next issue. Best Regards, GARY AVILA QUEBEC AYUSTE Salam, I am wondering if the Destination Jeddah magazine is still free or is it for sale? The reason I ask is because last week I was shopping in Danube in Khalideyyah and I saw the new copy of Destination Jeddah when I tried to take a copy the man informed at the magazine stand that it costs 10SR per copy. It doesn...’t seem right that they are charging for a magzine that suppose to be free. Thank you, Cheryl Wroblewski Dear Cheryl, Destination Jeddah is distributed to many points for free, but in limited quantities. When we received several complaints that the regular venues ran out of copies, we decided to provide a regular, solid location where Destination Jeddah will always be there in bigger numbers. Danube was our best option. Deciding to put it up for sale was a two-fold decision. a) Danube’s newsstand policy doesn’t allow for free distribution. And b) Having it for sale guarantees that only loyal readers will pick it up, thus keeping those issues on the stands for a bit longer than the free copies. It’s an opportunity for DJ readers to show their support for our magazine as well. 4

DESTINATION JEDDAH

Dear DJ, I found your magazine very helpful for us who don’t know more about Jeddah. I already had about four copies since I started to like it. Is it possible for you guys to publish some Japanese restaurants in Jeddah from their food, price, and the location? I would be very happy to see my letter in your next issue… Your style is exceptional Keep up the good work. Robert Martinojales Dear Robert, Thank you for your feedback. We’ve featured many Japanese restaurants in the past, & we’ll certainly consider your suggestion about an article which compares Jeddah’s Japanese restaurants according to different criteria. Good idea!

Please send to feedback@destinationjeddah.com

DJ Suggests: Fly a “Friendship Kite”! Littered throughout the Jeddah Corniche are little stalls that sell everything from drinks to toys to ... Kites. So Destination Jeddah suggests, in these days of unusually good weather, that you take advantage of the windy days and head to the Corniche with your best friends or family. All you need is a permanent marker and about SR10. Buy a kite from one of those vendors, (or you can buy a more expensive one from one of the larger toy stores like Toys R Us). Next, have fun assembling it! Once you’ve done that,

and before you try to fly it have everyone sign their name and maybe a message on that kite. Now it’s time to let it soar! Keep in mind that it will probably take a few tries to get it up there, maybe with one of you holding the string and the other running with the kite, but that just adds to the joy and excitement once it’s finally up there! Not as easy as it looks on TV, but tons of fun!

POLL OF THE MONTH Q: Do you turn off the AC when the weather is nice?

yes (72%) No (10%) Sometimes (18%)

Next Month’s Question: Q: What do you crave most when you are out of town? To participate in next month’s poll, visit the Destination Jeddah Magazine page on Facebook.

New recycling bins

Panda, one of the largest chains of supermarkets and hypermarkets in Saudi Arabia, has joined hands with TREWIND to set up environmentally-friendly garbage recycling bins. At present these bins are placed at three Panda locations: Malik Road, Rawda, and Prince Miteb Street. These bins have three separate compartments for disposal of tetra packs, papers and plastics. All the best for the efforts to establish a modern recycling system in the city! But watch out for scavengers.

DJ is glad to see all of the recent efforts that have been made towards guaranteeing road safety in Jeddah, such as the SAHER system. However, another important issue has still gone unaddressed. It is shocking to glance over at the neighboring car at a traffic light and witness one of the following sights: 1) a child driving the car, his family happily in the backseat; 2) children who are not securely strapped into their seat belts, or 3) a toddler merrily sitting on his mother’s lap in the front seat - the most dangerous place in a car for a child! Why is this still happening? Unless they have passed their driving test and have a valid license, children should NOT be driving and parents should NOT allow them to do so under any circumstance. The safest place for any child under 10 is the backseat, and ALL passengers should buckle up each time they enter a car, (yes, even in the backseat!) Let’s try to keep the streets of Jeddah safe for our children and for everyone else by adhering to these simple guidelines. DESTINATION JEDDAH 5

Useful Information Settling In

Navigating Jeddah’s Roads…It Can Be Done!

You’ve settled in at home and at work, but is it the journey between the two that has you worried? Jeddah is a city of the car, so let’s explore your options since your feet can only get you so far. There are numerous car dealerships located on Madinah Rd. - if your budget includes a generous transportation allowance, then this is the preferred route for you. From luxury sedans to sporty coupes to budget-friendly minis, you’ll be able to find a car to suit your driving needs amongst Jeddah’s well-stocked automotive showrooms.

Your Own Set of Wheels

If owning a car isn’t in your plans, then renting one for the duration of your stay is easily arranged, either with a driver or as a self-drive. Many new car rental chains have offices in Jeddah, so check the General Directory of the latest DJ for an up-to-date listing. We recommend Key Rental Car: (02-6856251), Budget Saudi Rental Car (www.BudgetSaudi.com), Hilton dispatch office: (02-6077350) or Abu Diyab Rental Car: (02-6677779). Editor’s Note: A quick check of services resulted in varied responses. Expect to pay SR80-100 per hour and SR800 per day for a driver chauffeured car rental. Rates and services vary and arrangements must be booked 2-3 days in advance. Male visitors holding an international driver’s license and proper identification papers are able to arrange for rentals – women are not permitted to drive in KSA. 8

Taxis

Taxis are easily found and affordable. A taxi off the street will cost about SR25 for a short trip or up to SR50 for a longer one. Expect to pay approximately SR50 per hour for a taxi, metered or not, and agree upon a price before you get in the taxi, if possible. If communication is too limited or unclear, just say, “Shukran/Thank you”, and flag another taxi. Taxi services are improving, however a city-wide, comprehensive taxi service standard is yet to be implemented. For visitors needing to get from a hotel to a destination, ask the hotel lobby front desk or concierge to make arrangements.

Saudi Public Transport Company

SAPTCO provides public transport, including new, full amenity motor coaches between major cities and towns. For tourists interested in visiting other cities like Abha, performing Umrah, or simply travelling to Makkah/ Madinah, these luxury buses are a comfortable way to travel. (www.saptco. com.sa, 800-124-9999).

Editor’s Note: Most taxis are 2006 model cars with clear conventional taxi markings. However, due to upgraded building and facility security in the last two years, taxi access is limited to pick-up and drop-off outside this boundary, and taxi pick-up and drop-off is usually streetside. It’s recommended to pre-arrange and secure transport options one day in advance to minimize being caught in the heat or at a business or facility that is closed. Best bet taxi pick-up and drop-off points are local hotels and large shopping malls. (See our hotel and shopping malls directory.)

Readers’ Settling In Adventures Dear DJ Settling In, A funny thing happened to my husband last Ramadan. As a newcomer to Jeddah, he wasn’t familiar with Ramadan timings. He went to the gym for a quick workout in the early evening, but since he doesn’t understand Arabic, he didn’t realize that the gym staff were announcing that the gym was closing for the evening meal for breaking the fast. When he emerged from the sauna and finished with his shower…he realized that he was the only person in the gym…and that he was locked in! After waiting about half an hour, the security guard returned & quickly unlocked the doors to release him. Hilarious! New settler

Dear DJ Settling In, You asked for our stories about life in Jeddah…well, I have a funny story to relate. It happened in Dec. when my son was visiting – he attends college in America, but loves to visit Jeddah. He was out with some Saudi friends one evening & heard them constantly repeating the phrase “Ana hammes”. He became alarmed that he was unknowingly hanging out with a splinter faction of Hamas. But upon further questioning his friends, he was extremely relieved to learn that they were just saying “I’m excited!” Proves that we all need to improve our Arabic! Amused Mom

Do you have a ‘Settling In’ adventure to share with our readers? Help newcomers avoid the fauxpas you may have made as they adjust to life in Jeddah. Language barriers, rules of the road, cultural missteps...they’re all funny in retrospect. Send in your tales to DJ and we’ll republish them here in an upcoming issue. Our Guests

My Kind of Town By Todd Reisz

I could never claim that Jeddah is my kind of town. Saudi Arabia’s city of the Red Sea, like no other city I’ve visited before, continuously makes it clear –perhaps deliberately – that it’s not about me nor for that matter anything that might be connected to me. Not only do I get the message that the city barely suffers my presence, but it also parades before me roads, systems, countries, worlds that operate outside my assumptions. Jeddah is a nodal point of a world greater than mine. For centuries Jeddah has been the sanctioned harbour of Makkah and the region’s other holy cities – approached by some of Jeddah’s roads physically closed to me. Jeddah maintains an ineradicable position as a port-of-call for millions of people who visit Makkah every year – from the Sahel region of Africa, Bangladeshi estuaries, Pacific isles, the Tajikistani mountains and hundreds of other places that exist only as commanding places in my imagination. 16 DESTINATION JEDDAH

I’ve come closest to these people in the streets and hallways of Jeddah – some of them descend from people who came on pilgrimage hundreds of years ago and never left; others are in my ramshackle hotel’s lobby, restoring their energy before embarking on the rough road to Makkah. Jeddah’s connection to Islam’s core not only secures it a role in the religious map of Islam; it also embodies a logical extension to Makkah’s other historical function (starting well Mohammed’s birth) – a trade hub. A

friend tells me of his mother’s annual lone trip to Jeddah. She would board a plane empty-handed in Damascus and land in Jeddah, perform the Umrah over a few days and then use all of her baggage allowance plus more to haul fabrics, lace, buttons and yarns back to Damascus to fill her stock room. Mohammad was a tradesman, and so are female shop owners in Syria. I started to understand Jeddah working on the publication Al Manakh 2: Gulf Continued. The book was a follow-up to the 2007 Al Manakh which considered the conditions of Gulf cities. For the second one, we decided to cover Saudi Arabia. Jeddah, of course, is not an Arabian Gulf city, it is the ‘bride of the Red Sea’, and its people, (if they are not from somewhere else) are proudly Hejazi. But you can’t begin to characterise Saudi cities without considering Jeddah. At thesame time, once you place Jeddah into comparisons, all generalisations fall apart. Although they may not be entirely reliable, Gulf cities present clear narratives, or visions. Even for the most sceptical of observers, renderings of ambitions for future financial centres and residential neighbourhoods in Abu Dhabi or Doha manage to command at least a moment’s suspension of disbelief. In Jeddah, such romantic bouts of profit promises simply fade from existence. Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi – they all announce themselves with the persuasive crispness of a corporate annual report. Gulf cities proclaim goals and benchmarks and deliver charts, figures, models, renderings, and CNN commercials to make it clear where they aim to go. Gulf cities show themselves on course, like true students of modernism. They make themselves out to be moving linearly. Jeddah, however, defies the linear. Listening to Jeddans talk about their city, it can be difficult to discern if they are telling

you something they find funny or utterly tragic. It’s neither and both, or maybe an entirely different category that doesn’t exist in my language. Ziad Azzam, an architect, described it for me in words that also landed in his piece for Al Manakh: ‘Jeddah defies logic and inflicts pain, yet communicates to the hearts of its inhabitants and visitors meanings of love and belonging.’ Jeddah is emotions that swarm around you, making you elated and incoherent, then overwhelmed with exhaustion. One of the city’s most optimistic moments in decades was the 2009 publication of the Jeddah Strategic Plan, the most recent attempt to bring order to a city that responds more to whim than to will. In language that was somehow sweet and stinging, most people I talked to about Jeddah’s new ‘roadmap’ held some hope that the plan would provide a stable rock to hold onto. Then came the November floods. Hundreds of people were killed, brutally exposing parts of a city that were living on the sham of an infrastructural system. Submerged highways were vast vestibules of rainwater. Homes collapsed as if made of plaster, and roads surrendered to avalanches of red clay earth. For a moment there was optimism – that this would be the turning point;that Jeddah’s leaders would have no option but to give some order to the chaos. Fierce optimism found its way into a moment of despair. As the rainwater dissipated and government officials made at least ostensible attempts at finding those to blame, the Jeddans I know started to settle back into that indefinable talk that settles somewhere between laughter and exasperation, but always with a warm hand for the man who doesn’t belong. An Introduction to

The Power of Belonging;

The Marketing Strategy for Branding by Said Aghil Baaghil

By Natalie L. Komitsky

In his latest book, The Power of Belonging, brand marketing strategist Said Baaghil presents business professionals and inquisitive consumers alike with a new understanding of ‘it’s all about relationships.’ He describes how our emotional perceptions and sensory experiences are involved in our acceptance or rejection of choices in the marketplace. Employing his 20 years of marketing consultancy experience, he shares valuable insights about current marketing practices in the Middle East, with a sharp focus on Saudi Arabia. Baaghil first illustrates the importance of establishing a sense of belonging by exploring the question: “Who owns the brand?” This leads to an in-depth study of the brand development process beginning with an idea, then closely examining the needs, wants and trends affecting consumers in order to connect these factors with the original idea in order to develop the brand. He further explains that it takes careful planning and delivery of a consistent message for any brand to develop from an idea to a part of the target market’s lifestyle. But, if this understanding is achieved, a brand can ultimately belong to the consumer, demonstrating exceptional loyalty to not only its qualities, but to the full emotional and sensory experience that is associated with it. He supports this view with numerous case studies of local, regional, and global business successes. Within this detailed analysis, Baaghil explains how the power of belonging applies to product, price, place, promotion, packaging, positioning, and people across the globe. He illustrates the often overlooked significance 20 DESTINATION JEDDAH

“Brands are not just names or logos. Brands are like humans; they are like you and me. They need to be managed to grow well and thrive.” of individual choices that are made during brand development such as choosing a name, designing a logo, selecting a color scheme when establishing its overall look and feel. Companies like Timberlake, Harley Davidson, and Ralph Lauren’s Polo have expertly delivered invitations to consumers who have gladly joined them in the emotional and sensorial experience created by their brand lifestyles, proving the importance of carefully considering each of these choices and their combined effect. Said Aghil Baaghil is a brand marketing strategy consultant, brand activist, and author. His 20-year progression of marketing strategy expertise, uncompromising brand activism, and dedicated pursuit of innovation has reaped remarkable results, gaining him recognition as the most respected brand strategic marketer in the Gulf region. Among the Ruins of

Domat Al-Jandal

By Ahmed Sahab

This month’s trip was to Domat Al-Jandal in Al Jouf Province in the northern part of Saudi Arabia. The winter weather was clear and beautiful, but slightly cold at night, going down to 10C. We drove 1300kms to get to Sakakah and spent the night in a motel, arriving at Domat Al-Jandal the next morning, only 50km away.

The name comes from the local belief that the town was first settled by Dawma, a son of Ismail and grandson of the prophet Ibrahim. I didn’t know what to expect from this small city, but I was definitely impressed by what I saw upon arrival. The city is amazingly calm and green and contains many historic sites and ancient buildings - it also has the biggest artificial lake in KSA due to a system of wells and ancient irrigation canals known as qanats (a signature piece of irrigation from the great Nabataean empire.) First we visited one of the oldest mosques which dates back to Islam’s 24 DESTINATION JEDDAH

earliest days, Khalif Omar Ibn Al-Khattab’s Mosque. It’s more than 1300 years old and its high minaret has never been rebuilt or even renovated in all that time! It stands more than 12 meters high and was built with jandal stone. Still in use, the mosque has a carved door with red geometric patterns and is wholly unlike any other mosques you’ll see. It was built using stones and clay, with a ceiling made up of wood and palm trees. It has a prayer niche, a pulpit, a prayer room for women and a little well, which was used for drinking and ablution.

DESTINATION JEDDAH 25

The mosque was built alongside a castle called Qasr Marid which is more than 2000 years old, another legacy from the Nabatean civilization. The fortress is amazingly beautiful even though one of the walls is in ruins. A local expert and dear friend, Awwad Al-Faleh, explained the fascinating history of the castle. It was built to shelter 5000 people, which was the population of Domat Al-Jandal back then. Historians date Qasr Marid back to the 3rd century BC, when Queen Zanobia of Tadmor invaded Doumat Al–Jandal and Tayma, but could not conquer the castle. Her famous last words as she departed were, “Marid revolted and Ans Al-Ablag became costly”, (Marid in Arabic means something that could not be conquered.) The site is a must visit if you are in the area because it’s historically interesting to wander among the ruins of a once thriving town on the ancient trade route that linked Mesopotamia, Persia and Syria with Yemen. The famous oasis of Sakakah is still lush, and the city and surrounding areas continue to produce large amounts of wheat, citrus fruit and olives, as well as nourish over half a million mature date palms. Saleem Al-Homsi:

An Artist with Ideals By: Yosra Alkaff, Shaimaa Qadi,& Dina Al Amoudi

Artist, designer, self-made Renaissance Man… all these labels apply to 25 year-old, Syrian Saleem Al-Homsi. His recent work on Sami Yusuf’s CD and music video shot at IMC in Jeddah has placed him in the spotlight as an up and coming designer to watch! He dreams of encouraging local media to reflect both Islam’s high principles as well as harmony of vision in the design sense. As he says, “Never forget that everything you do will reflect upon you as a Muslim.” Q. How do you describe your style in photography? In photography, I am into portraits and photojournalism more than landscapes. In addition, I always try to tell a story through one or a series of pictures. For example, for a recent graduate, I will try to show the whole journey of his school experiences in one shoot or in a series. Or if it is portrait, I like to show the model’s story and feelings. Therefore, I am into learning philosophy so I can translate that in my pictures. I also love the post-photography process of image manipulation. Q. Why didn’t you study design? Because basically there are no well known universities in this field for male students in KSA, unless Dr. Suhair AL-Qurashi accepts me to study at Dar AL Hekma College.

30 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Q. Why is certification important if you have experience?

Knowledge is extremely important knowledge and experience complete each other. Without enough knowledge, creating art is like trying to do a puzzle with a missing piece. Therefore, a designer wouldn’t know the hidden things that can affect the strength of the design. So I am working hard to complete my studies in U.A.E or Malaysia by getting a scholarship in media and photography. Q. What is the project that gave you the most experience? I was blessed to be part of Sami Yusuf’s project with IMC. I learned a lot from Jacob Kusk, the Danish director, and his entire team. He is an example of Muslim

ethics although he is not a Muslim, his determination, patience, and sincerity were his hallmarks. For example, the weather was very hot at that time, and the Danish team was not used to it, yet they worked so hard outside while the Arab team refused to work because of the weather! On their last day, their flight was at 5:30pm, yet due to a tiny image error where the logo in the video appeared pixilated, they stayed with me until 3:30pm – they refused to leave without fixing this tiny mistake. They wanted to submit it perfectly or not at all. That is what I really learned from them and I am planning to apply it to myself. Q. What obstacles have you faced? The biggest obstacle here is that most people don’t understand the value of media and design. Artists, from their point of view, only draw portraits in streets. People don’t consider art as a real job, but instead only for wasting time. Q. What is your next ambition? My dream is to take photos in Gaza.

Chucrallah Fattouh: Transcending Culture Throug h Ar t

By Dina Ismail

Lebanese painter and sculptor Chucrallah Fattouh is an intense individual. When he speaks about his work or his inspirations, his whole manner changes - his hands gesture trying to make a point, his eyes narrow as he passionately discusses his influences, and his demeanor softens when he reflects on his home on the shores of the beautiful seaside city of Byblos, Lebanon. In essence, Fattouh embodies what it is to be an artist. Growing up in the picturesque coastal town of Monsef (Byblos), the ten year old Fattouh began experimenting with colors, shapes and figures. Over the years, this wellhoned talent led him to the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Lebanese University where Fattouh emerged as a post-cubist painter and sculptor.

During his stay in Jeddah, Fattouh explored the city and expressed his delight and admiration both in the rich heritage of the area and the warmth of its people. “It’s such a unique city,” the artist mused. “The years of history and heritage and the beautiful environment have really inspired me to try and translate my vision of Jeddah through the eyes of the locals His paintings, mostly abstracted impressions of figures, are subtle and graceful, but at the same time vibrantly bold, leaving the viewer wanting to create a connection with the work, as Fattouh obviously has with his subjects.

32 DESTINATION JEDDAH

“I want my works to be a medium for discussion or to relay a message. As an Arab, I see the different identities of each country, each made unique by their traditions and people. Fattouh thoroughly researches each country before he visits it, drawing inspiration from its heritage and traditions. For Jeddah, he was drawn to the rawasheen in the old city (Balad). “I feel like the shutters of the rawasheen hold the secrets of the people who lived in those buildings,” he said of one of Jeddah’s unique architectural features. “The Jeddah art scene is so varied and rich. I especially enjoy the works of Abdullah Hamas, who I feel has really translated the heritage and environment of this area in such a modern manner.” In return, Jeddah hopes to see much more of this passionate and unique artist in our fair city. Fattouh’s unique point of view and undeniable creativity provide a new perspective on the unexpected beauty of heritage and tradition.

With Lamar: It’s Your Time

to Shine…

From the Fiori collection

The collections represent the unique personalities of a young woman, while possessing the shared sophistication of her refined taste and chic style. His designs stem from the belief of a young lady’s inner and outer beauty that could light up a room. The Italian jewelry brand embodies her presence through its design and flawless gold. And by utilizing the newest technology in electroforming and metal coloring, Lamar provides unique pieces of colorful enamel that are essential in any fashionista’s closest. With Lamar, it’s your time to shine…

1. Sensei

A girl’s favorite jewelry pieces are the ones with sentimental values; Lamar has created a line for the hopeless romantic. The girl who wears her heart on her sleeve can now wear it around her neck or on her wrist, in the form of elegantly designed precious gold pieces. The pieces make the perfect gifts, whether for a special occasion, like an anniversary, or as a gesture of eternal love. Feminine and ornate, these designs inspire a love affair with gold!

3. Elite

The Middle East often acted as a muse for Sergio to design this collection; He loved the simplistic beauty of the desert and the way sand dunes undulated like the ocean. Lamar has translated the waves of the desert into an art deco-inspired aesthetic, making the collection both contemporary with a classic flavor. Elite is an international traveler. She has been all over the world and loves immersing herself in new cultures, which her wardrobe has stole much inspiration from. Her style is understated chic, making being fashionable look effortless and guaranteeing she’s in vogue no matter which continent she’s on.

From the Elite collection

2. Fiori

The Fiori, or Beautiful Flowers in Italian best represents this line, which is embellished with beautiful colored enamel, is the most organic of the lines. But this has not limited Sergio, who has been influenced by the growth of gothic architecture in his hometown, such as the Cathedral of Modena. Her intricate glass windows can easily be seen in a pair of delicate, chandelier earrings. This line is for the feminine girl who sees the beauty in everything and everyone can easily see the beauty in her.

4. Stella Dora

With sparkling accents on genuine gold, this line is for the girl who loves to be the center of attention. Her confidence makes her comfortable in the spotlight, while her accessories make her feel extra feminine and extra special! From bold statement pieces to vintage-inspired sets, the line consists of a range of styles. Regardless of which ones you choose, they’re sure to be great conversation starters! www.lamarjewellery.com

APPMUST “So what makes this different from Skype?” Difference Between Viber and Skype VIBER

The new wave hitting the Middle East- and the world. Viber is an iPhone application (Android and Blackberry versions coming soon!) that lets you make free phone calls to other iPhone users that have Viber installed. When you use Viber, your phone calls to any other Viber user are free, and the sound quality is much better than a regular call. You can call any Viber user, anywhere in the world, for free. All Viber features are 100% FREE and do not require any additional “in application” purchase.

(1) Skype has video calling whereas Viber at the moment doesn’t have video calling. (2) Skype Client Software could be installed on any compatible device and same username password pair can be used to login and make calls. Whereas in Viber, it currently supports for iPhone only. (3) Address book synchronization is possible in Viber but not in Skype. (4) Skype is using their propriety CODEC , which could use minimum data possible with high quality. (5) IM, SMS, Skype Out, Skype In is possible with Skype but at the moment it’s not possible with Viber. (6) Both use your monthly data plan or WiFi. (7)Both give good quality voice but Viber users in the Middle East report better quality sound. Maybe due to less traffic since Viber is new?

GAME REVIEW Little Big Planet 2 : Only on PS3

An enjoyable story mode, powerful creation tools, and great online features make Sackboy’s sequel a giant leap forward for LittleBigPlanet. Little Big Planet is far away from little, in the terms of what can be done inside this creative, colorful and simply beautiful game. The single player story mode is no shorter than 30 levels of fun-packed adventure, though the real treat is in its online community and content, where each and every player can create his little plant and show off his building and creative skills to the world. * SCEA * Media Molecule * 3D Platformer * Release: Jan 18, 2011 * ESRB: Everyone

Corridor of

Red Sea Coast

Marvels By Hans Sjoeholm

Thirty years of diving the reefs of Jeddah and its surrounding areas have gone by in a flash. In many ways I feel I have only scratched the surface. The passion to discover the jewels of the Red Sea only increases with time, and it is truly an adventure and a privilege to do this at the doorstep of the great city of Jeddah. But “why?” you might ask. Why have I found diving here so special? Allow me to explain. In many ways diving is the opposite of swimming. I love swimming, don’t misunderstand, but that is an activity caught somewhere between the air and water. When diving, you are fully immersed in a different world where every voyage is full of discoveries, excitement and rewards. On 50 DESTINATION JEDDAH

each dive you get to defy gravity, experience tremendous freedom, joy, fulfillment and harmony on these exquisite coral reefs; these cities of life. Diving in many places around the world can be a lot of fun, but the Red Sea is particularly special. The Red Sea forms a 2,350km long stretch of water closed in the north by the Sinai Peninsula and exposed to open ocean at the shallow Straits of Bab al-Mandab (which lies between Djibouti and Yemen in the south). 30% of Red Sea species are endemic, meaning that you can only see them here. Saudi Arabia has an impressive 1,850km long coastline on the Red Sea that has been blessed with huge reef formations and islands.

Red Sea Fusiliers –Caesio suevica, these endemic, curious and approachable filter feeders gracefully roam the waters above the reef.

Many famous diving personalities have frequently visited the Red Sea. Diving pioneers like Hans Hass, who first explored the Red Sea in 1940, expressed his marvels about the Red Sea. I even had the pleasure to meet him here in Jeddah in 1987. Jacques Cousteau visited and dived in Jeddah in 1956. He once said that, “the Red Sea is a corridor of marvels - the happiest hours of my diving experience have been spent there”. Fortunately for us, a nearby section of this corridor of marvel is conveniently located immediately to the west of Jeddah’s seashore, forming a vibrant chain of reefs surrounded by calm and clear water. It is a huge privilege to venture to these nearby reefs to explore shipwrecks and offshore coral colonies. Because the water is so warm all year round,

you can dive here throughout the year and see first-hand the changes each season brings. Witness changes in the habitats and the cycle of life, seeing coral grow and form new spectacular formations, discovering different species and witnessing their changing behavioral patterns. Every creature on the reef goes about their day with the simultaneous goals of finding a meal and a partner, but not becoming a meal themselves. Each creature does this in their own way and some with more flare than others. Frequent visits provide the opportunity to observe schools of juveniles feeding on plankton in the water column. Specimens such as surgeonfish, chromis, anthias, mackerels, fusiliers and DESTINATION JEDDAH 51

Eye to eye encounter with the surreal cartoon like Bluespotted Stingray- Taeniura lymma

A Coral hind - Cephalopholis miniata has an appointment at the cleaner station with the Bluestreak cleaner wrasse – Labroides dimidiatus.

The Giant Sea Fan (Annella mollis ) makes a popular photo subject. It is found on steep exposed seaward slopes at depths of 10-50 meters with large upright fans perpendicular to the current.

triggerfish all abound. Dive long enough and you will identify them at their different stages of maturity, sometimes looking completely different than their juvenile selves. Butterflyfish and angelfish display dazzling colors as they decorate the reefs, while clownfish play around in sea anemones. Puffer fish and groupers hover calmly in place carrying on with their own reef duties.

Watch pairs of eagle rays playfully dancing over the seafloor to the greatest symphony of life, while the surreal cartoon-like bluespotted stingray stir up a huge sand cloud on the seafloor during their feeding, completely oblivious to their surroundings. If you are especially lucky you might come across a pod dolphins playfully approaching, greeting and checking you out.

Some of my favorite scenes are the busy nurseries inside the reef systems, where predators like jacks and trevallys circle to make their catch. In the surrounding azure waters, I have often run into cruising schools of barracudas and tuna either in huge resting formations or zooming about to catch their prey. Ambush predators such as lionfish and the more cryptic stone and scorpion take a different approach. These fish wait, often in hiding or well camouflaged, to ambush the unwary prey.

All of these creatures make up a kaleidoscope of marvelous color and personalities, leaving lasting impressions and memories of joy and respect for these fabulous Divine creations.

The cleaner wrasse earns its meals the hard way. Watch fish queuing up at the cleaner stations for their appointment to be relived from parasites, mucus and injured tissues by the Bluestreak cleaner wrasse which gorges itself on these troublesome morsels. 52 DESTINATION JEDDAH

I have found that diving is often like experiencing a dream. Under water the experiences are surreal and the colors are vibrant. Afterwards the memory is only a pale and faded facsimile. Logbooks and image archives are very useful in getting the most of your experience. They preserve and restore memories of great experiences and friendships. Visiting the denizens of these underwater habitats, these submarine cities of life where every creature plays an important role, is vital to preserving the ecosystem. If you think that you have seen

it all you better try again and rethink the way you are approaching and exploring this wealth of ocean life on your next excursion. Also, if you believe the reef is there for you to revisit and plunder indefinitely, you will likely be disappointed. Our planet is under a tremendous pressure, and change seems to be inevitable. The degree to which that change is a positive or negative one is up to us. We must each do our outmost to preserve our blue planet, unless we want future generations to find that we have squandered the world’s natural treasures. In 1965, the Senegalese environmentalist Baba Dieum said, “In the end we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand, we will understand only what we are taught”. I encourage everyone to educate themselves and teach others about the plight of the world’s underwater environment. As underwater visitors, remember to shoot only with your camera, leave nothing but bubbles, take nothing but pictures and kill nothing but time. See you underwater!

The best-sellers in the sweet category are their pecan tart, apple pie and chocolate caramel. Savory pies have to be pre-ordered, but it’s worth the wait. The best to try in this category are smoked salmon and tomato and cheese. “Our pies are special and exclusive,” says Intissar Bakr, the General Manager. “Pie is not junk food. You can have egg pie which is fulfilling and nutritious. We want to make people aware of this.” Although Pie Sweet Pie takes pride in its pies, it also has on its menu a wide variety of finger foods. Their cupcakes and signature cookies are especially delicious, with outstanding texture and taste. Pie Sweet Pie also caters for parties and events; by expanding their kitchen they are anticipating a steady growth in business. “We want to cater the pies and sell to restaurants too,” says Intissar. The prices for all their items are very competitive. Their pies, available in a variety of flavors are SR7 each and SR79 a dozen, which is quite reasonable compared to other places where pies are sold between SR8-16 each. Black & White… Always in Style When you enter the Shadow Lounge… you enter a different world. Everything here is based on a black-and-white theme: black tables with transparent fiberglass chairs imported from Italy, chefs in black aprons, black-and-white wallpaper, even a black-and-white staircase. The elegant, red barstools add a striking element of drama to the overall theme.

Shadow Lounge is neither a restaurant nor a lounge. It is, as its Assistant General Manager Francis M. Magat, puts it: “a semi-fine dining facility.” The menu is Italian-influenced, with a variety of pasta and pizza preparations to choose from. The food is cooked live in front of you, providing an interesting, entertaining option not seen in many other restaurants. “Steaks and pasta are the favorites here,” says Francis. In particular their steak sauce is unlike any other place in the city and is made using only natural ingredients. Shadow Lounge is open from 8 AM to 1 AM, therefore catering to the breakfast, lunch, and dinner crowd. Although it gets most of its customers during office hours since it is located on Rawda Street in the midst of office and business complexes, after their soft opening in Ramadan, they are all set for a grand opening in February. Shadow Lounge also offers catering services for private events. With an extensive drinks menu of mocktails and hot beverages, there’s plenty of choice to accompany your meal. Mix well, then cool in a separate bowl Shish barak: Thinly roll out the dough, either with a rolling pin or a pasta machine, till a thickness like lasagna or a bit thicker (.2mm) Cut the dough into circle using a 2” round cutter or a Turkish coffee cup. Place ¾ tsp of meat filling into center of circle and fold over to form a semi-circular crescent and seal well. Bring corners together slightly to form a ‘hat’ shape. Continue till filling is finished. Final preparation: Melt the ghee or oil in a large pot, then add the garlic & chopped onion & sauté briefly. Then add Maggi, black pepper, water, tomatoes & tomato paste. Bring to boil. Simmer over low heat for 5 minutes, then add vermicelli and shish barak until shish barak are cooked. Garnish with chopped coriander & serve.

Mystery Diner Teayana A popular local concept, Teayana carries a delicious array of “mana’eesh”, salads, and sandwiches, not to mention a wonderful rainbow of teas that will bring joy to any tea connoisseur’s heart. I personally love their whole wheat dough mana’eesh with za’atar and labneh filling, can’t get enough of it. Mmmm...!

Escargots At La Cusine It is a known fact that Jeddah is a town of foodies and for a restaurant to stay on top as long as La Cuisine has is a real achievement. For all you lovers of French food, this one is for you. The escargots at La Cuisine have been a consistent must-try in the ever-changing Jeddah food scene and for good reason. These delectable delicacies are brought to diners in a decadent mixture of herbs and butter and will truly transport your taste buds to the City of Lights. Presented in a plate with several hollows, La Cuisine’s escargots are a nice change of pace for fine dining lovers in Jeddah. For those looking for something a little different, then escargots, one of many delicious dishes at La Cuisine, should be next on your “to-eat” lists! The only problems I’ve ever faced there were with the service. Normally friendly yet-abit-slow on a regular day, on a busy day, like a Thursday morning, it’s flat out lacking. I was very disappointed with the service at the Corniche Atallah Center branch. Not only did I have to run around to find a waiter willing to speak to me, but when I decided to just take my food take away from the counter the waiter was dismissive, bordering on rude, and didn’t even give me the option of ordering when I walked up to the counter.

“I’d like to order a zaatar and labneh man’ousheh please” - “sorry maam there is a 30minute wait” and then he just walked away from the counter and got busy talking to someone in the kitchen. I called back to him “Ok, I still want it.!” He stopped, looked a bit surprised but then grudgingly rang up my order. I told him I’d be in the cafe next door, just bring it over when it’s done. He flat out refused to, though the seating areas were all connected upstairs and I had just seen one of the waiters do the same task a few minutes earlier because the restaurant was full. No amount of polite convincing could get him to budge. Which leaves me with the question: Why is it so hard to get good service here?! A Spa for Your Body Inside & Out

By Dilara Hafiz

Raw food, daily enemas, juice instead of food…these may not sound like the ingredients for a luxurious spa experience, but it is a recipe for a transformative physical and spiritual retreat. Alternative health experts and proponents of naturopathy believe that physical diseases are due to an accumulation of toxins built up over time in our bodies. Whether from environmental pollution, poor diet, smoking, or stress; toxins are a reality of our 21st century lifestyle.

Why go on a detox/cleanse retreat?

Taking time-out from your hectic life for a dedicated detox will not only help you lose weight, reduce stress, clear up skin and digestive problems and massively boost energy levels, but it may help you process and let go of years of accumulated stress and negative mental patterns – the theory is that as your physical body releases toxins, it also releases the negative energy that you’ve stored up on an emotional and mental level also.

How will you feel after your retreat?

What to expect on a detox/cleanse retreat?

Don’t undertake this challenging process lightly – you may actually feel worse for a few days before the benefits begin to manifest themselves! Allow a week to ten days, or ideally two weeks, to a regimen in order to feel the lasting effects of this reboot to your system. You’ll fast, eat high-fiber, organic or raw foods, drink lots of natural enzyme-based juices, and listen to the signals of your body.

Say ‘Good-bye’ to the common toxicity symptoms of headache, fatigue, allergies, constipation, skin disorders, bronchial congestion, and even certain mental disorders. Think of it as changing the oil or air filter in your vehicle…your body will thank you. Chiva Som Hua Hin, Thailand

“Quote”

“And it is He who spread out the earth, and set thereon mountains standing firm and (flowing) rivers: and fruit of every kind He made in pairs, two and two: He draweth the night as a veil o’er the Day. Behold, verily in these things there are signs for those who consider!” 13:3 Yusuf Ali Translation of the Qur’an

Charting a new path The Path, a new board game launched in the Saudi market by Delaware Group International Limited, a Hong Kong registered company, promises to be “the best game ever made for Muslim children.” Unlike Monopoly or other board games, there is no money or dice involved in The Path. The winner of the game is the player who collects the most ‘Good Deeds’, and raises the most Muslim children. The inventor of the game, Omar Bill Lowrey, an American who embraced Islam in 1988, resides in Jeddah. “I grew up playing all of the Western board games, so I took the best things from them while leaving out the bad things. The object of THE PATH Game is to collect good deeds (Hasanat), not to collect money like in Western games,” he tells DJ. The game is easy to play. It doesn’t require the children to have any special knowledge about Islam, because it is not meant to be an Islamic quiz game. Any child can play and enjoy the game, from about 5 or 6 years and above. There are 24 careers in the game which range from doctor to plumber, 32 different cars, 24 different houses, 56 different Good Deeds to collect, 50 different countries to visit, 50 different shopping tiles to shop for and 70 different Muslim names to name your children. Children move around the board using a spinner – not dice. The game is available in the market for SR149. The Path games are available at Jarir Bookstore, Al Mubah Airport branches, Toys R Us, Fanateer, Top Toys, AB Toys, Bawadi Bookstore, Funoos Bookstore, Abul Qasim Bookstore, Kid’s Campus and Little Book.

The Sound System Music is a universal language that speaks to all cultures of the world, and Muslims have contributed much to this common denominator. Muslim artists of the 9th century used musical notation, named the notes of the musical scale, and developed many musical instruments. AlKindi, a notable musician, was one of the first to realize the therapeutic value of music. Seventy years later, al-Farabi wrote five books on music, one of which, The Great Book of Music, was a masterpiece, the influence of which continued well on into the 16th century.

A Movie That Inspires

An excited crowd gathered at the Marriot Hotel for two segregated screenings of the movie “Napoleon: Life of an Outlaw”. The documentary chronicled the eventful life of Mutah Beale, aka Napoleon – a former member of Tupac Shakur’s rap group, the Outlawz, who later embraced Islam and is now an active da’ee in Shifa Riyadh. The movie outlines Beale’s tumultuous journey, where, as a child he witnessed the gruesome murder of his parents, and later, his stint as a rapper, which exposed him to a life of violence, drugs, alcohol and other forms of vices, and then finally his bent towards Islam and the field of da’wah. “The response was positive and we got great feedback from the crowd,” said Beale, who was present among the audience on both the days to gauge their response as well as to answer their questions. “Most questions were asked about my life in the music industry with Tupac, so I explained to them the realities of that life, which is not a sound way of life as it is in opposition to the way of life that Allah (SWT) has prescribed for us,” said Beale, who has over 40 million record sales worldwide. 82 DESTINATION JEDDAH

DJ caught up with Umm Mu’aawiyah, a student of Islam and an instructor for young Saudis, who was in attendance. “I felt it was done really well for the youth to see what Mutah went through. I liked how they showed how Tupac’s death affected Napolean, and him getting heavier into drugs, pot and suicidal thoughts - he tried to find happiness in material stuff. However, Mutah was still sad, lonely and depressed. So all that shows the youth the reality of the so-called celebrities; it’s not all glitter and glamor. The proof for this is that the whole “Outlawz” group accepted Islam and are much happier and at peace now.” Beale now lives in Riyadh and also runs a clothing line he founded called ‘MIIM’ (pronounced meem), which is short for ‘My Inspiration Isn’t Money’. Using a unique mix of Arabic calligraphy and American urban styles, MIIM Clothing creates designs that are not only fashionable and trendy, but also carry a message of positivity as well. www.miimclothing.com www.lifeofanoutlaw.com

Write Green!

You’ve heard of green power, green living, green transportation…but green writing? Spranq, a Dutch creative communications agency which specializes in graphic design, has come up with ‘EcoFont’, their version of a font which will use 20% less ink when printed. ‘EcoFont’ is based on sans-serif Verdana and each character contains tiny, blank holes which don’t affect the readability of the type-face. “After Dutch holey cheese, there now is a Dutch font with holes as well,” says Spranq. The theory is simple: remove as much black area from a font without adversely impacting its readability. The Arabic version is already in development!

So when it comes to applying green principles to all aspects of your work environment, ‘EcoFont’ joins the arsenal of existing smart practices such as using recycled paper, printing on both sides, and only printing essential documents. The font is free to download and is available for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux. It’ll be exciting to see more innovative and creative eco-friendly ideas enter the marketplace. Green living is not only good for the planet, it’s good fun too. Go to www.ecofont.com to buy & download!

Being eco-friendly is not just about recycling paper and plastic; a big part of it is being eco-savvy: how to reduce your consumption as well as how to escape all the environmental risks that are constantly being brought to light. And what better place to start with than at home? Here are some household appliances that can help you be a little more friendlier to both the environment and yourself: 1. Solar Powered Lights: Put the glaring desert sun to good use by lighting up your yard with solar-powered lights. 2. Atmospheric Water Generator: No, we’re not talking about some sci-f thingamajig.. The AWG really does take water vapor from humid air, condenses it, and makes it safe to drink!

3. Chlorine Filtering Shower Unit: We all know chlorine is a poison ever-present in shower water. Your body actually absorbs 600% more chlorine by taking a shower than by drinking water, making it very important that your water is clean. The Shower Unit filters out chlorine and makes sure your shower water is poison-free.

4. Dual Flush Toilets: Many of us have them, but do we actually know what they are?! Dual flush toilets work to reduce the amount of water gone to waste by flushing. They offer you the choice between a 0.8 gallon light flush (for liquid wastes) and a 1.6 gallon flush (for solid wastes).

This book is a simple, easy read for people who are interested in knowing more about how to be a Muslim living in this world of misconceptions and false information that may cause conflicts within oneself. It takes us into a journey of critical thinking and raises questions on controversial topics such as identity, sense of belonging and the issue of women. It’s the author’s personal experience as a Muslim living in the west and working in the academic world for twenty five years. Many questions were asked regarding his message and what he stands for; therefore, this book comes with simplified answers for these questions. It gives us a better understanding of the current issues, and as Dr.Ramdan says: “Deeply, simply: he, who cannot love, cannot understand”. Whether you are a Muslim or interested about misconceptions of Islam or simply love philosophy and critical thinking, this book would certainly help you. To live this beautiful journey with your mind, soul and “the author of course” * You only need 15 minutes of your time for approximately 20 days. Useful Arabic Words & Pronunciations

Arabic is the world’s 5th most commonly spoken language with almost 300 million native speakers. It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations and belongs to the Semitic group of languages. The three main classifications are: Classical Arabic, also known as the language of the Qur’an, Modern Standard Arabic, used in books, newspapers, and media, and Local dialects, which vary by country and region. Arabic words are constructed from threeletter “roots” which convey a basic idea. For example, k-t-b conveys the idea of writing. Addition of other letters before, between and after the root letters produces many associated words: not only “write” but also “book”, “office”, “library”, and “author”. The Arabic alphabet consists of 28 consonants and three vowels – a, i, u; it is written from right to left. Some of the glottal sounds are unique to Arabic. The Arabic words presented opposite reflect the Hijazi dialect.

Where did this word Which spelling? come from? Did you know that many English words have Arabic origins? Algebra, alchemy, and algorithm are easily identifiable by the ‘al’ which means ‘the’ in Arabic, but how about thise word… Admiral : ‫ أمير البحار‬amīr al-bihār, “commander of the seas”, a title in use in Arabic Sicily and continued by the Normans in Sicily in a Latinized form, and adopted successively by Genoese and French. Modern French is “amiral”. An English form under King Edward III (14th century) was “Amyrel of the Se”. Insertion of the ‘d’ was doubtless influenced by allusion to common Latin “admire”. 90 DESTINATION JEDDAH
