Outdoors

As the weather remains cool for the last few months and vacations are over Jeddahwis are settling back into the usual rhythm of life in Jeddah. With that, hopefully people get to enjoy the outdoors a little bit more and take advantage of the unique activities the Red Sea offers. Few people associate Jeddah as one of the world’s great outdoors locations, but Jeddahwi’s make the best of what of what is available. Whether it’s by jogging in the afternoons or planning beach trips in the evenings to avoid the slowly building sweltering heat of summer, Jeddah always has something in store for everyone. We were lucky enough to have some truly exceptional people visit us here in Jeddah this month. From the eloquent US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham-Clinton who spoke at Dar Al-Hekma College; to painter French Ronan Olier who traveled the Hijaz and the Gulf painting what he saw in beautifully watercolored sketches. Not forgetting the Red Bull Air Force team who dazzled the audiences gathering in Al-Hamra to watch the 12 teams participating in the 7th International Skydiving Competition. We always want to find places that provide a strong service back to the community and Al-Aseel stables does that with its dedication to helping disabled children both have fun and develop physically and mentally. Not everyone is as familiar with Jeddah as long time residents. Many are just joining the Jeddahwi family, so we’ve included a handed list of where to find furniture in town: following last months article on the essentials of settling down in Jeddah. Lastly, Word On The Street is one of our newest sections which can’t function without your help. Tell us what you think of certain things in Jeddah; specific things in the magazine you either like or don’t like or just voice your opinion about anything you want. Destination Jeddah is about the city of Jeddah as well as it’s people. Who knows we might feature your idea as a story one day. Enas Hashani Editor-in-Chief editor@destinationjeddah.com

Happy happy - reading DJ one tends to feel that everything is just perfect in Jeddah and that there is nothing left to improve. No place is utopia, and we should have the courage to criticise what doesnt work, and the creativity to offer solutions and suggestions to make it work. Not every restaurant in Jeddah is superb, not every event fantastically managed, and not every destination well-kept and organised. It is in our own best interests to accept that, not shy away from it. Facing the truth doesnt belittle Jeddah, but opens our eyes to the many ways we can make it an even better place to live. Let us accept that there is still work to be done. I hope that next time I come to Jeddah and pick up a DJ magazine, I will find it radically improved, much more exciting. Best of luck, Safia Dear Safia Thank you for your constructive input, it is much appreciated. DJ magazine is a city guide and as much as we love this city, we never claimed Jeddah was a utopia. The mystery diner column and our Jan., issue are testimonies to that. We also choose to address issues we feel need fixing with a call-to-action: like our antilittering campaign, the donation campaigns, and the green living section. But as a city guide, we like to keep a positive outlook on the city and recommend to our readers what we think would be enjoyable to them and what would enrich their lives in the city. DJ Team

During my time in Jeddah I have had the pleasure and displease of eating at several of the local and international food establishments in this great city that I love so much. Of course being an American here is something special to be able to eat at a place that sort of makes you feel at home at times. One such place is (Joes Diner) in the Khaledeya Area next to the Danube on Al-Rawdah. By far I feel that they serve the best hamburgers and hotdogs, even beating Fuddruckers hands down. Even though Fuddruckers lets you add your own toppings, nothing beat the taste and general atmosphere of (Joes Diner). Then again you can’t beat the price either. While the accommodations are smaller you have that dinning experience of being at the real Chicago Joes located in Chicago, Illinois USA. Just under a hundred miles from where I live in Michigan, every few months we would load up the car with the kids and head to Chicago to buy my wife her Philippine foods and stop off at one of the many places to eat. So let me tell you if you’re not a fan of (Joes Diner) you are missing some real good food. Also have them make you a hot dog with coleslaw on top, try it once and you will be coming back for more. .... In closing, I really enjoy reading “Destination Jeddah” each month with the great stories of Jeddah and places to visit. I was in Jeddah from 1994 to 2001 and had recently returned back some 8 months ago. When I first had picked up Destination Jeddah I was amazed at how well written and informative it was as a matter of fact I try to get extra copies for my co-workers and my boss to look at. Keep up the great work and hope to see it expand as I am here. Kenneth Potter

POLL OF THE MONTH What’s your favorite Italian restaurant in Jeddah?

Thumbs up to... Panda supermarkets Exact change is not something many people expect to get back once they do a large amount of shopping at once. Thankfully Panda supermarkets have come up with an idea to benefit the less fortunate. Everytime you purchase something from one of the Panda chains you are given the choice to donate the decimal portion of your bill to the Jumaiya charity for disabled children. We congratulate Panda for being proactive in helping take advantage of Saudi Arabia’s unique financial blessings to help those who really deserve it.

Thumbs down to...

As populations around the world increase every year, the effort to keep people moving along at a smooth pace grows along with them. In many cities these efforts are visible and noteworthy. Yet as every day passes in Jeddah, traffic becomes perceivably worse and worse and very little is being done to curtail this, to many’s dismay. We blame not-only the Jeddaah Municipality but also to the traffic authorities for not fulfilling their part of making the city run more smoothly. The municipality is at fault for not improving the roads but the traffic department is at fault for not organizing the roads more effectively and mobilizing police to areas that have the heaviest traffic. Jeddah itself is at a disadvantage since one popular activity is going for an aimless ‘cruise’ in the car which only excacerbates the traffic problems and traps more people in the web of automotive agitation. After the Municipality’s 20-year plan launched last year, only a few bridges which act as little more than elevated speed bumps, have been built. They are useful but solve less little of the problem. Now that summer is approaching the authorities should be concerned as to how they can help us all enjoy Jeddah a bit more.

Getting furniture sorted By Sobia Javed

Continuing last month’s feature, we’ve brought you some more tips for life in Jeddah as an expat. For those of you who have just managed to secure an apartment – congratulations! The next step – Furniture! Every month we bring expats some tips for life in Jeddah. Once you’ve secured yourself a place to stay the next step is the dreaded furniture shopping. We’ve put together some handy tips on the best places to find furniture to fill your new home.

Air Conditioning Units

The scorching heat means that the first thing you need to buy is air conditioning units. They are reasonably cheap, starting from around SR1000. Split air conditioning units are a lot more aesthetically pleasing and quieter than traditional air conditioning units. However those will cost you around SR3000.

Cooker

There is a cooker to suit every budget, from the electric mini unit that goes on your tabletop, to a full-blown six-burner stainless steel device. Gas cookers require a separate gas cylinder that will set you back about SR100, and SR10 to fill up. Depending on use, you probably only need to fill up once every three months. It’s recommended that you get your microwave and fridge from the same shop that you purchase your cooker from in order to get you more bargaining power.

Pots and Pans

Surprisingly, some pots and pans and other kitchen utensils are cheaper in Carrefour or Hyperpanda than in outdoor markets. You also have the option of IKEA.

Bedroom Furniture

You can buy beautiful bedroom furniture in Jeddah at relatively low prices. A full set, consisting of a king size bed, mattress, large wardrobe, two bedside tables, a dressing table and chair plus a mirror will set you back around SR2500 for something on the plain and simple side. For something a little more elaborate, be prepared to pay around SR4000.

Majlis

To give your apartment a truly Middle Eastern vibe, invest in an exquisite majlis (low sofa). These are relatively cheap and you can get one custom made to suit your exact requirements. Starting prices are SR200 per meter. If you’re looking for more Westernized options, places like Habitat and the numerous furniture stores on Rawdah St. carry more modern furniture. Of course, the obvious choice is also IKEA

Rugs

You can find rugs at most souks. One handy tip would be to settle on the type of furniture you want before buying a rug. Get the wrong kind of rug and your entire living room or bedroom could clash with it. 8

Water Heater

Although the weather is still warm in the winter you may still require a water heater, if your apartment does not have one already installed. In the morning the water can be a lot colder, especially if you’re one for an early morning shower to start the day! There are a small variety of heaters and cost close to SR300 including fitting and delivery of a 50-liter tank with the relevant accessories.

Washing Machine

There are two types of washing machines; top loading and front loading. Which you take is really up to your own personal preference; however generally the top loading washing machines are cheaper but they use up more water. Remember to check whether your detergents and washing liquids are suitable for your machine!

Because there are so many different places selling similar items we’ve listed a few souks and outlets below with a brief description. You might have also noticed that generally, shops selling certain items tend to be clustered into concentrated zones around Jeddah. For example, you will come across dozens of stationery shops located on one section of a road, and on another section of a road, you’ll find what seems like hundreds of mobile phone shops, or shops selling water heaters. It is the perfect remedy for the bargain hunter in you, as you can compare prices from shop to shop at ease.

‘On a Budget’ Souks Harie Swarij

Located in south Jeddah, this souk is located not far from the industrial area. Any taxi driver should know where this is so do not hesitate to ask. This souk has everything from pots to TV’s and cookers. It also has a ‘used items’ section for those on a tighter budget. This is a very large souk so expect to spend most of the day there and be prepared for a lot of walking!

Souq Ghurab

Located in Al-Baladiyah St., this souq is packed with lighting shops. Everything from

indoor to, down lighters to uplighters and chandeliers, can be had at a fraction of brand name prices.

Mahmood Saeed

This is near the bicycle roundabout in AlFaisalliyah Dist. You’ll find a large variety of sofas, tables and other lounge accessories can be found here. There is also an extensive variety of shops selling rugs of various colours and sizes. Excellent for low-cost bedroom furniture which looks a lot more expensive than what you pay! The majority of shops here offer great package deals like a bed with a matching cupboard, bed-side tables and a dressing table. DESTINATION JEDDAH 9

Stores Centre Point : The store on Prince Sultan St. within the Dome Mall is their larger branch. Downstairs is clothes and upstairs is their Home Centre with household items. Many items are similar to IKEA, with very competitive prices. www.centrepointksa.com SACO : This is on Andulas Rd. near the intersection with Falasteen St., not far from Hardees. This store may initially look like a warehouse, but SACO also stocks home gym equipment, as well as garden and office furniture at extremely reasonable prices. www.saco.com.sa Giant Panda/ Carrefour : Although you’ll generally recognise these two as fixtures in your weekly grocery shopping, they also stock a limited variety of electrical items and household goods, such as air-conditioning units, cookers, washing machines etc.

‘BLOW The Budget!’ Stores eXtra : This large electronic store is located on Prince Sultan Street and Abdullah Sulaiman Street. They stock a large variety of electronic items. www.extrastores.com 10 DESTINATION JEDDAH

IKEA : An international store located between the Al Faisalliyah and Al Aziziyah areas. You may find it a bit tricky to get to at first but it’s worth the journey. Some of their offers are really good however a few of their products seem a bit expensive in comparison to their stores in the Western part of the world. They stock a large range of items suiting most budgets and it’s definitely worth visiting for smaller household items. www.ikea.com.sa Riyadh House : A good source for office

furniture as they stock an extensive range of desks and office chairs. Desks vary from your common large Chinese desks to more modern glass selections. They also have a variety of office chairs on display including comfortable leather executive chairs and some rather funky modern office chairs too. www.rhc. com.sa

Habitat : Habitat stocks an exquisite range

of household furniture in both classical and modern styles. It is well recognized for it’s high quality products and customizing services so don’t expect anything lacking in quality from the moment you enter. www. habitat.com.sa

Before you go on your shopping spree, here are DJ’s TOP 5 TIPS! Top Tip #1: Decide on your budget, and stick to it! Top Tip #2:

Streets

Remember – haggling is the best way to get a good deal. Don’t just accept the first price that you are given. Ask politely for a discount, especially if you are buying multiple items from the same shop.

Medina Rd.

Top Tip #3:

Sultan St.

You don’t have to buy on the spot. One (sometimes risky) tactic is to tell the shopkeeper that you are going to think about it, and make your way out of the shop. Most of the time, the shop keeper will call you back or shout out a price to you. Then, you turn around, smile and accept the offer! (If it’s a good one).

If you are after designer furniture, you will find over a dozen furniture stores between the Sari St. intersection and the Quraish St. intersection on Madinah Rd. Many of these are stocked with designer furniture at designer prices - it would not be unusual to spot a dining table for SR10000. Need a lamp or a chandelier? Sultan st. is packed with shops selling specialised lighting for manageable prices even if you’re on a budget. There are also a few stores specialising in office furniture and couches.

Rawdah St.

If you aren’t worried about shelling out a little bit extra to furnish your new home, Rawdah St. is packed with both western and local upmarket stores. So, there we go. A lot of information? Yes. But with Destination Jeddah being the perfect size to slip into your handbag or man-bag, you can take it with you when you go shopping to use as a reference. What’s more, after all that hard work shopping, you can locate a lovely restaurant listed in DJ and finish your day with a welldeserved meal.

Top Tip #4: Make sure you get everything in writing. If you are getting goods delivered to your apartment and installed professionally, make sure this is written on the receipt, and ask for a FINAL price including all of this. The last thing you want is for the delivery driver to ask you for money on the day of delivery or the installation guy refusing to install anything unless you pay him. Top Tip #5: Try not to pay the full amount at once. Negotiate with the vendor to see if you can pay half of the money upon delivery and/ or installation. If the shopkeeper agrees, make sure your deposit is WRITTEN on the receipt.

Happy shopping! DESTINATION JEDDAH 11

Ronan Olier: Jeddah through a few brushstrokes By Michael Bou-Nacklie

Sitting patiently, his back straightened and his eyes concentrating on the horizon, Ronan Olier, a French painter from Brittany, paints what he sees but with his own distinctly vibrant style. Olier was in Jeddah on a two week invitation from the French Consulate General where he traveled around the region to paint different landscapes. His work has taken him from the bustling seascapes of his hometown to as far as Vietnam and now the Hijaz region. During his visit he instructed a painting workshop on Feb. 17, organized by Fainak at Lenotre CafĂŠ at the Park Hyatt Marina in Al-Hamra Dist. An art teacher for almost 35 years, Olier has taught everything from plastic sculpting to architecture painting.

12 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Olier spent two weeks in Jeddah painting various landscapes that he saw including downtown areas like Al-Balad.

On average, Ronan said his paintings take two hours each to do, with many of the details painted on site and the rest filled in later using a photograph to aid his memory. In his thick French accent, Olier said he was pleased with the level of artistic dedication and the enthusiasm the workshop participants brought to their work. “Especially the younger ones, normally it’s very hard to keep them enthusiastic about painting. Usually you’ll have to give them new sheet after new sheet for them to start something new once their attention wanes on what they are doing,” he said, a smile creeping across his weathered cheeks as he flips through a notebook with his ink-stained fingers. “It’s really gratifying for an old teacher like myself to see.”

Olier looks over the portfolio of workshop participant, Abdullah Bogis, in order to suggest how to improve his techniques as an artist.

Rushing from person to person, he devoted his entire attention to each painting put before him. Giving quick tips so as to not become too involved in his pupil’s paintings, Olier was as helpful as they wanted: even adding his own touch to demonstrate techniques he wanted them to implement.

Skydiving

over Jeddah:

Redbull Air Force comes to town By Michael Bou-Nacklie

Falling into any job is difficult for most people. But for the four members of the Red Bull Air Force, who spent a week flying down over Jeddah, it couldn’t have been easier. All four of the sky divers have similar stories of how they began a career in skydiving. Sean MacCormac, Jeff Propenzano, Omar Al-Hegelan and Othar Lawrence experienced the free fall thrill that comes with skydiving and knew right away that they wanted to do this forever. “The easiest way to describe it, is something everyone has experienced before,” You know when you’re a kid and you stick your hand out the window and you feel the air rushing over it. (Skydiving is) like that but over your entire body. It’s different from when you fall off a ladder or when an elevator bottoms out. You don’t get that same full body resistance.” Their stay in Jeddah was part of the Seventh International Skydiving Champions with 16 teams from around the world. The final jump was made up above the Jeddah Fountain shortly after 5PM when the fountain is at full strength. “What most people don›t realize is that… after the first initial couple of seconds of exiting the aircraft, you don’t feel as though you’re falling,” Al-Hegelan said. “You feel 14 DESTINATION JEDDAH

A member of the team from the UAE approaches the landing platform. Al-Hegelan described the feeling of jumping out of a helicopter as closer to floating than falling.

as you feel like you’re floating. The visual perspective from 10,000 feet, 8,000 feet, 7,000 feet, looks pretty much the same. So you’re not getting a ground rush so you don’t feel like you’re falling instead you have this floating sensation. It’s not like being in roller coaster where you feel your stomach coming up to your throat and you feel this uneasy queasy feeling. Not at all, it’s this very natural floating feeling.» Throughout the week the Air Force team (who were not part of the competition) performed aerial stunts using canisters of hot smoke which attached to their shins released a cloud of colored smoke to mark their stunts in the air so they can be seen more clearly from the ground, Propenzano said. They also did Free Flight Jump, Wingsuit jumps and base jumps. Each these employ different techniques but base jumping was the greatest crowd pleaser. Lawrence leaps from a the helicopter and deploys his shoot at from ground level at what seems like the very last moment to the delight of the crowds.

Hillary Clinton speaks at Dar Al-Hekma College By Michael Bou Nacklie

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Saudi Arabia as part of her tour of the Gulf and stopped at Dar Al-Hekma College to have a brief discussion with students. Clinton told the New York Times she hoped the discussion would have focused more heavily on women’s rights. She said “American media presents a very unidimensional portrayal of Saudi women,” focusing on the black veils most wear, the NYT reported. Students were allowed to ask pre-screened questions to the Secretary of State but afterward, many expressed their confusion as to why the topic of women’s rights was not addressed. “Maybe because it was Hillary Clinton, people wanted to ask her about issues bigger than whether Saudi women can drive,” said Duaa Badr, 18, a freshman management student. Her tour of the region was part of her foreign policy push to pressure Iran into ceasing its nuclear program. She accused Iran of sponsoring terrorist groups around the world including inside the Kingdom as well as pointing out that Iran’s behavior should raise concerns for its regional neighbors. “If you were the leader of a country that’s a neighbor, or further away watching as Iran lobs longer-range missiles... and hearing them say that they are going to go forward with enriching uranium, discovering a secret facility that they never disclosed to anyone, violating their obligations to the (UN) and the (IAEA), you’ve got to ask yourself why are they doing this?” 18 DESTINATION JEDDAH

While in Jeddah, Clinton met with the Organization of the Islamic Conference on Feb. 16 to introduce Rahed Hussein, US President Barack Obama’s appointee to the OIC. After a 30-minute meeting behind closed doors with OIC Secretary-General Ekmeledin Ihsanoglu, she later formally introduced Rashed Hussein as US special envoy to the OIC. The secretary-general further highlighted the positive strides that the US and Muslim nations are taking and referred to Obama’s speech in Cairo as a genuine vision of future collaboration between the West and the Muslim world, reported the Arab News. Hussein said he was hopeful his appointment would bring the US and the Muslim world closer and bridge whatever gaps remained.

DAR AL-HEKMA GRADUATING EXHIBITION: The 35 graduates of Dar Al-Hekma’s design program put their final projects on display, exploring topics ranging from gender-mixing to the status of human rights. The graduates operated under a theme of pushing social change, galvanized by projects like Rawaa Bakhsh’s ‘Insaniya’ which questions the development of human rights. The central design focus was based on the metaphor of Kashida which is a typographical term based on the idea of having strength in numbers. In this case the exhibition refers to the strength of designers banding together to promote a point of view.

JEDDAH Atelier By Silwan Eshki

Jeddah’s art scene has seen a recent surge in popularity with people frequenting galleries, bazaars and community events more often. With this renewed interest, artists have come out from every corner of Saudi society to forge a brand new art scene. A few of these artists are expatriates working to contribute to the growing local artistic community. Eli Acheson is a British woman who has dedicated most of her paintings to describe, explain and illustrate the beauty of her experiences in Saudi Arabia.

26 DESTINATION JEDDAH

At her exhibition organized by Jeddah Atelier and entitled “An Artwork in Every House”, Acheson presented several pieces of her work. Jeddah Atelier has always been in favor of supporting community programs through arts and creativity. One of Acheson’s inspirations is the conservatism and male dominance in Saudi society. At first glance it seemed as if Acheson only paints objects, however that isn’t the case. Using oil paints on canvas she uses diluted and light colors to paint what she sees. She said that the environment in Saudi Arabia along with the atmosphere

seriously affected the way she paints and colors her paintings, including her speciality: sand dunes. Bringing out the golden essence of the sand and the heat of the sun reflection, Acheson’s creations make for a unique and inspiring reflection of Jeddah life. She will host her Saudi Gallery in Alameeya in May.

Giving disabled children new life By Michael Bou-Nacklie

Several times a week children suffering from disabilities, ranging from cerebral palsy to autism, get a chance to exercise their mind and body with the help of horses at Al-Aseel stables.

“Everything we do here that looks like fun is actually work,” said program coordinator Judy Houry. People who do not have control of their body, or cannot move their body freely, are unable to exercise their muscles she said, so with horses they can move their muscles with very limited effort. “The movement of the horse is nearly identical to a human being. Someone in a wheelchair for instance, their organs never get to move, because they’re sitting all day... put them on a horse and every single muscle is being moved, every single organ is being moved.” She said one student who has next to no muscle control simply lays down on the horse. After just a few days of being on horseback Houry said the girl’s mother called her and told her that the girl’s breathing had become better than it had since she was born. Part of the therapeutic riding involves finding items while being escorted on horseback as

well as holding hula hoops and fruit baskets above their heads. All these exercises are designed to spur cognitive and muscular development in the children who are suffering from cerebral palsy. The program operated by Open Jeddah Skies is a nonprofit which recently received a donation from AVON to sponsor 10 students for a year.

Do you remember as a little girl wanting to be

just like your mother? Wishing you would one day get to have her beautiful shiny hair? Or her feminine long nails? You would wear her clothes and spray her expensive perfume so you could not only look like her, but also smell like her too. Well, Kamelia Kamel is not just playing dress up anymore. Instead, she’s a young lady taking her mother’s legacy and turning it into a 21st century interpretation that is sure to have all the girls wanting to dress-up in her boutique’s timeless pieces. Tifa boutique is a tribute to Kamel’s mother, Latifa Hmidi, one of Saudi Arabia’s original fashion pioneers. Latifa, or “Tifa,” - as her family and those close to her affectionately called her - was a style icon and brought renowned design houses to the Kingdom in the early 90’s. In step with her mother’s legacy, Kamel has stocked Tifa with handpicked items from visionary designers. The boutique carries a

variety of items, from the coveted costume necklaces of Fenton Jewelry, to the flowing silk skirts and cascading cocktail dresses by Brian Reyes and Saudi designer Razan Alazzouni. Kamel demonstrates, through her brand choice, her ability to fuse together contemporary fashion with the classy sophistication that her mother famously embodied. For example, the online boutique Net-a-Porter’s One Vintage collection, composed of restored one-off pieces from the late 19th century to the ‘70s, fantastically combines the past with the present. By magically transforming the delicate fabrics into contemporary, wearable designs. One Vintage is reflective of the Tifa woman: one who is able to both appreciate the complexity of the eclectic origins with the modern simplicity of the cut. Each piece from the quintessentially European brand, features romantic antique blouses and chic bohemian tunics, possessing a unique bit of history much like Tifa boutique itself and its strong heritage. Your Personal Electro-Stylist By Marriam Mossalli

Fashion is organic. It has always evolved and in the twentyfirst century that translates to a lot more than just your purse or shoes. Today, the definition of accessories has advanced to encompass the everyday gadgets we can’t live without—our iPhone, iPod, and of course, our MacBooks! These items have become extensions of our personalities and we now want them to reflect our style accordingly. Meet your personal stylist: i.zone. Differentiating itself from other electronic boutiques, i.zone offers fashion-conscious items that are at the forefront of their industry, not just in terms of technology, but also in terms of style. Just check out the Jawbone headsets: sleek and stylish, they turn heads without compromising function. They are the technological equivalent to a pair of diamond earrings, eye catching and envy inducing. Speaking of expensive, if you’re into even higher-end tech-fashion, i.zone carries the ultimate collection of electronic luxury and funk: the DEOS Diamond earphone covers. Exclusively designed by a team of fine jewelry experts, the bespoke covers fit your Apple accessories, transforming a familiar item into an haute couture display of personal style. Now that’s the definition of modern luxury! But what makes i.zone so en vogue? Well, first of all, it’s part of a very select group of official Apple Premium Resellers in the Kingdom. Buying a Mac product from anywhere else would be like buying a knock-off Louis Vuitton from downtown… and we all know how much of a fashion faux pas that is!

Second, i.zone is not only fashion-forward, but industrially-forward as well. It’s always coming out with the latest gear before anyone else. Just take a look at the new Monster HeadBeets by Lady GaGa. Not only are they high-performance products, but they have a hefty amount of fashion credibility: what more could any electronic trendsetter want? No longer is technology measured merely just by performance, visual appeal has become just as important. At i.zone, it’s not just about ram and gigahertz, but merging fashion and exclusivity. So whether you’re a hardcore fashionista or just a lover of all things technological, the only way to show how in step with style you are is to wear it on your sleeve - your phone, iPod, and computer too! P.S. Put me on the waiting list for one of those iPads and a funky cover for when they do come out. For store locations, check out the DJ map!

TechTamer’s Gadgets

Hi, TechThamer here. I love gadgets and new technology designed to make everything a little bit easier. From Star Wars toasters to the latest smartphones, I’m all over it. If it blinks, bleeps or whistles I’ve probably seen it and played with it a little. Here’s a small selection of stuff that’s caught my eye this month.

Nokia X6 “Comes with Music” - SR2500

Now here’s an interesting new toy. Many other companies taking a stab at creating a producing touchscreen phones have come with styluses that get lost or when you try and use more than one finger on the screen it all grinds to a halt. The new Nokia X6 looks like your traditional slider phone but you wont find any buttons on this bad boy. It has a 5MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics which isn’t usual for a phone. Although it wont be available until March for about SR2500 it will give you access to four million tracks for free. You heard me, free. Part of the purchase goes to paying for a 12 month subscription from Ovi Music. Once the license expires you still get to keep the music. Interesting right? I know I wouldn’t mind free music packed into a phone that’s all pretty awesome.

Transcend Ski Goggles - $350 350 (around SR1,300)

I’m no sports fanatic but even I can appreciate just how fantastic this is. Zeal Optics has brought some much needed nerdiness to the world of outdoor sports. These goggles look like something straight out of science fiction with their ability to display real time data on heights, speeds and other statistics of a run down a snowy hill. The goggles packed with all sorts of goodies include: GPS and more sensors that you could shake a stick at. They also simplify navigation with three buttons located on the right temple area: up/forward, select and down/backward. In the ad, ZO announced that all sorts of new bits would be included in the next versions ranging from: caller ID, buddy tracking, trail maps, night vision and loads more. It even uses intelligent composition to frame images up with rule of two thirds so it frames things as close to how a professional would. It can also mount up to any tripod. Available at MeMega

Steering Wheel Remote Control - SR150

For those of us who don’t own a car fancy enough to have stereo system controls attached to the steering wheel, now there’s something that’ll let the rest of us feel just as cool. The Steering Wheel Remote Control attaches to your steering wheel using a velcro band, letting you do everything from change the volume to skipping tracks. It has a built in Bluetooth capability and supports redialing as well as voice dialing options. Not only that but it has a built in FM transmitter and a SD/MMC card slot as well as a USB port. Using CVC technology, it claims to remove any excess noises and echoes.

iPad - $499 (N/A in Saudi yet) Starting at

$499 (N/A in Saudi yet), it’s decently priced for something of this type but I had hopes it would be the competition for the netbooks that PC manufacturers make. But Apple however wanted to make this look like the senior citizen friendly iPhone. All in all not a total waste, it’ll be useful for those who need to show high-resolution images like photographers and graphic designers. It would have been nicer had it been equipped with a CD drive so you could install software more complex than a simple app. Check out apple.com for more information

LULÙ Defining the Lulù collection as glittering would probably be an understatement. It is an architecture of light and color. Lulù is dedicated to those who can have uncompromising desires, with no false modesty. It features a plethora of white Topazs, blue Topazs and Amethysts on which – as if that were not enough – a cascade of diamonds has fallen. Every ring, every earring is so overflowing with gemstones that even the gold mount disappears. But what is really special about Lulù jewels is that, even before being worn, they convey a contagious, irrepressible and precious ‘joie de vivre’. Available only in Pomellato boutique : Jeddah –Stars Avenue Mall– King Abdul Aziz Road Tel: +966-2-2754484

Jeddah's original outdoor activity

50 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Photos by Michael Bou Nacklie

Long before Jeddah and the western region of Saudi Arabia became the commercial hub of the region, it was famous for something less complex. The Red Sea is still one of the most biodiverse in the region and the ancient Jeddahwis took full advantage of this. Many of the coastal towns developed as fishing towns, using coral stone for everything from cooking utensils to foundation stones for the old homes in Balad. Many local fisherman still practice the same methods of fishing which their fathers and fathers before them implemented to bring fish to the market and home.

52 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Even though the Red Sea is at risk of overfishing and pollution a days outing can still get you some interesting catches. One technique fishermen use, is they drop anchor next to shallow corals. Since corals are the building blocks of life in the sea there are always rich communities of fish surrounding them. This attracts both fishermen and predatory fish like the toothy barracuda. DESTINATION JEDDAH 53

It's no secret that fishing is a waiting game. Often seagulls and other birds linger around fishing boats hoping to catch scraps. Many times smaller fish caught are cut up and used as bait to catch bigger fish so the gulls end up having the leftovers from the bait thrown out to them.

54 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Many fishermen spend the day out on the sea. Casting lines, waiting, casting some more and trying their luck. This form of fishing is extreme labor intensive and time consuming. Fortunately the Red Sea still has plenty to provide for local fishermen even if giant fishing ships still dot the horizon. Most of the catches are often groupers or Coral Groupers easily identified by their bright red color and spotted body. DESTINATION JEDDAH 55

Fortunately the Red Sea still has plenty to provide for local fishermen despite the giant fishing ships dotting the horizon. Most of the catches are often groupers or Coral Groupers easily identified by their bright red color and spotted body. The Red Sea is still a fragile ecosystem and it needs our help in keeping it clean and healthy. Remember that when you are in the Red Sea you are in the home of another creature so be careful and treat it with respect. Keeping the Red Sea vibrant with life is everyone's responsibility.

Menus in wooden sleeves along with plants flanking every part of the restaurant give you the sensation that this place is dedicated to giving you something fresh. Which in large part is true. The friendly and attentive staff really aim to satisfy customers at whatever cost and seem to sincerely welcome any feedback on the food and service.

With a little work on the food, Olio could easily trump Jeddah’s older Italian favorites. The service, decor and menu variety all hold the beginnings of what could truly be a great restaurant. Express Your Yummy Feelings! By Serene Feteih

No one can deny that cookies are one of the simple pleasures of life. Maina Khoja, co-founder of Skitchen and Minimoonz, shares her delicious journey from a simple idea that started from home. “The idea of Minimoonz first came out in 2004, when my husband suggested turning my passion of making cookies into some solid business,” Khoja said. “I was known for my secret cookies recipe and my cookie jar was the most demanded gift from family and friends. My husband then encouraged me to take it further and spread it to mass levels. In 2005, I started Minimoonz out of my home as an occasional yummy gift. In 2007, we started selling all-year round, and in 2008 we opened our first shop.” “We faced the challenge of adjusting the recipe into a commercial/mass-ready recipe to justify business profitability; but decided not to! Moreover, we insisted on selling cookies the same day they are baked. “Minimoonz offers gourmet taste and creativity in using cookies as a means to express feelings and emotions, hence the slogan: “Your Yummy Feelings”. The brand introduced several new ideas to our culture such as using cookies as replacement to 62 DESTINATION JEDDAH

occasional gifts. The gingerbread man, “Zanjabillo”, concept has also spread widely since creating more than 500 unique designs of their own. Their basic menu includes hero cookies and on-display Zanjabillos; you can have them anytime you pass by the shop. “That is 60 percent of our business; special orders form the remaining 40 percent.” The word Minimoonz describes the cookie after the first bite, it looks like a little crescent or moon. It’s a unique name that stands out and aspires to appeal to sweettooths everywhere.

Mr. Kumpir We are always on the lookout for uniquely different location for our Tucked Away section. Mr. Kumpir is exactly that.

Mr. Kumpir is a Turkish franchise rich in potato goodness and all that potatoes entail. Kumpir (Turkish for potato) has a wide range of items to choose from, all incorporating a piping hot potato as the base of the meal. Mystery Diner Potato Gratin

By Waleed Alqurani

* Alqurani is a chef at the Yanbu Movenpick Hotel.

Often associated with French and central European culture, potato gratin is a popular dish found around the world, especially in the Middle East. Not ideal if you’re looking to save on calories, it is often served to accompany a meat dish.

Ingredients

1 kg potato 50 gm parmesan cheese 100 gm whipping cream 20 gm minced garlic 20 gm butter with 50 gm Flour 3 tbsp oil Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation Method: 1. Chop potatoes into equivalent slices. Stir fry the minced garlic till it turns yellow. Then, add the sliced potatoes into the pan and stir-fry for few minutes. 2. In another pan, melt the butter with the

flour on medium heat. Then pour them, the whipping cream, some water, salt & pepper and half the serving of the parmesan cheese then stir continuously.

3. Put the entire mixture into the Pyrex, and

then add the remained parmesan cheese on the top. Finally leave the mixture to bake in the oven for 25 minutes at 160F, cook uncovered until the top is brown.

China Gate Much to my dismay, this place only changes it’s menu once a week, according to them. However if you go there the next week and you’ll find that it’s basically the same, other than two or three things that have been changed. About the only thing that I go there for are the spring rolls. If you get in before 6PM you can save SR10, on Saturday to Wednesday. I would not want to spend more then that for the same food, even on the weekends when they want to charge you SR45. The service is generally average but they do have one waiter that I had deduced was really bored as all he does is sort of march from the counter to the door and back again. Being single here and knowing that they have a family section, I find it odd that there are often families in the men section. So what is one to do in this situation? So if you’re really hungry and want to get full quick, try China Gate. However, I don’t recommend you eat there more than once a month unless you want the same taste over and over again. I must also say that the food does not really taste like any Chinese food that I have tasted abroad. It’s more like a mix of Indian, Chinese, and something else in between.

“No Way BA/AA”: Cloudy days for airline industry? By Dina Ismail

Ever-growing world of travel:

Air France/KLM extend Amadeus distribution agreement until 2 0 1 3

By DJ Staff

Amadeus, a leader in the global travel distribution solutions industry, and Air France – KLM, the largest airline in Europe, have extended their full content agreement until December 2013. This means that Amadeus travel agents will be able to access fares, schedules, and inventory relating to more than 74.8 million seats and 90,000 flights operated annually by Air France and KLM. The agreement between the two has also been expanded to cover all global Amadeus users, rather than the previous restrictions to European agents. “For travel agencies in Saudi Arabia this means that through Amadeus they will have access to all Air France-KLM group content on a worldwide basis. As the preferred technology provider to travel agencies in Saudi Arabia, we are committed to offering long-term full content partnerships with the world’s leading airlines thereby allowing travel agents to be competent and productive in their line of business,” said Nashat M. Bukhari, General Manager, Amadeus Saudi Arabia. Amadeus, which employs over 8,900 employees representing 123 nationalities, expressed their delight in being able to provide travel agents worldwide efficient access to the services and fares of key airlines. Among those specified were British Airways and Virgin Atlantic who have committed to three year agreements with Amadeus as well as Iberia and Lufthansa and Swiss who have both made five year agreements with the organization. 72 DESTINATION JEDDAH

As of February, the BA/AA merger has been granted preliminary approval by the US Department of Transportation. Since the 2008 announcement that airline industry giants American Airlines and British Airways were planning a merger, an uproar within the industry has ensued, among those who believed the alliance between two of the world’s largest airlines reeked too heavily of a monopoly. However, talks of the possible merger gained new fuel when it was announced the alliance had been given the green light by US regulators. The merger would allow BA and AA to cooperate on pricing and services for key transatlantic routes. They would have to give up take-off/landing slots at Heathrow International Airport. The agreement has ruffled the feathers of one of the largest high-flyers in the industry. President of Virgin Atlantic, Sir Richard Branson, has denounced the merger, claiming, “If their proposals were approved, BA/AA would have a monopoly, or nearmonopoly, on some of the busiest and most profitable routes from Europe and they would effectively be able to behave as one airline.” Virgin Atlantic’s “No Way BA/AA” campaign provides consumers with templates to send to the European Commission or US Department of Transportation to protest the merger. According to Reuters, American Airlines’ parent company, AMR, has argued that “there is no risk of a monopoly because more than 40 airlines (that) fly between Europe and the United States. Travelers will have greater access to cheap fares and smoother connections.” Does this merger herald the end of competition within the industry or is it just the bigger, better way of doing business in this economic climate?

Travel Smart: Find the bigger, better deal By Dina Ismail

Calling all travel bargain hunters! The large expat population of Jeddah is an extremely well traveled lot. We know how to scout out the best packages for our travel needs simply due to the amount of practice we’ve had. However, even the most travel-savvy among us could use a little help now and then and that is where travel websites come into the equation. Travel websites alert us to the bigger better deal, at prices most of us didn’t even realize were available. It just takes patience and a little luck to find the right deal for you. Hopefully, some of the websites listed below will point you off the beaten trail and into travel bargain paradise.

www.vayama.com

Vayama’s slogan is: International Travel Solved. Sounding good to you? That’s because Vayama focuses exclusively on international travel. It’s a great resource to find under the radar deals and packages that are otherwise difficult to find on websites that focus on American/European travel. It also allows you to check/uncheck other travel websites around the web in order to compare prices. Sounds pretty “solved” to us.

tucantravel.com

Tucantravel.com offers deals and packages for the “alternative” traveler. Looking for adventure? Discovery? How about just a package guaranteed to save you some riyals? Tucan Travel is a great resource to find unique package deals in the Middle East, and other regions.

expedia.com

Expedia is probably the wise traveler’s best resource to compare prices across several airlines. It offers you a simply interface for flight, hotels, car rentals, and package deals. It’s a reliable resource no matter where you’re departing from or arriving to. International-traveler friendly, Expedia compiles prices from a variety of sources, leaving the final say up to you. *Tip: When booking flights from websites like expedia.com, make sure to check the sites of the actual airlines as well! Travel websites sometimes add a little bit extra onto the original prices of the flights. Now that these resources are at your disposal, there is no excuse not to make the smartest travel deal possible. Happy Traveling!

Turning

“Litter Into Art”

In an effort to raise awareness about environmental issues the British Council organized the “Turn Litter into Art” in cooperation with Friends of Jeddah Parks in order to show that trash is in fact reusable for something creative. The activity is divided into two stages with the initial stage, on Feb., 14, focusing on collecting discarded plastic and paper items from locations across Jeddah. The second stage, to take place from March 6-10 at Al-Faisal Sports Park, and participants will create different artistic creations of their choice. Forming new eco-friendly behaviors is simply a process of time, repetition and growth. There may be a period of adjustment as you turn certain habits into BETTER ones. All you need is an alternative. Every month we’ll be suggesting new alternatives and ideas for you in this box. After a long day of checking e-mails and ignoring requests from strangers remember to switch off your computer at night. It may be a nuisance waiting those extra few seconds booting it back up the next day but according to the Department of Energy you could save up to SR337 ($90) on your annual bill. It is also recommended you shut off your monitor if you wont be using it for 20 minutes and the whole system for two hours of disuse. Turn off lights in rooms you aren’t using. If you ever got lectured by your Dad about leaving the lights on he wasn’t just being stingy. Lights form up to 11 percent of electricity bills and if you switch off the lights youll be extending the life of your light bulbs. Recycle your mobile phone. Make sure to clear the phone’s memory and the SIM card if left inside. You can recycle your mobile at Nokia Care Center on Palestine st. opposite Rabia. Plastics and leftover chemicals often seep into the ground at landfills damaging the ground as well as underground water reserves. Instead you can make your own household detergents. That annoying drip, drip from the faucets and the grumbling toilet is costing you more than just your sleep. On average a leaky faucet that drips 60 times a minute drip up to 90,000 times a day using up to 21 liters per day. That’s equal to 41 baths. Go grab that wrench now. Putting down a doormat outside your entrance will collect toxins and dirt that would ordinarily be tracked into your home.

Gadgets Bedol Water Powered Clock.

Don’t be fooled by the fun look of this clock. It has a serious side, too. It can actually help save the planet. Powered by a splash of water and a dash of salt, it keeps perfect time with no batteries. Sounds like magic, but its just simple science. Electrodes harvest energy from the water. A clock that improves the environment inside and out. We also recommend that cut a lemon in half and squeeze some lemon juice into the water tank. This procedure will enhance the power generated by the clock and make it work more efficiently.

Friends of Jeddah PARKS By Serene Feteih

Over the past decade, Jeddah has grown tremendously. With this boom, indoor entertainment and activity choices have also grown along with huge shopping malls, restaurants, cafes, and amusement parks all over the city. But what about outdoor options? Sports, activites, or a simple walk in the open air. Isn’t that a basic need and a right for anyone? 80 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Green parks are an essential part of growing up, especially in a city where children tend to lose touch with nature if not provided regular exposure to it. In it’s ongoing development, the rise of Jeddah’s huge shopping malls and non-ending choices of restaurants and cafes lacks a much more needed basic right for that younger generation of population…green parks and open-land spaces. That’s what three mothers thought when they formed the non-profit organization, Friends of Jeddah Parks. It started with the simple premise that every child has the right to play in a safe and healthy outdoor environment near their home. These mothers teamed up with businessmen, professionals and volunteers to pursue an ambitious vision to create open space parks in every neighborhood in Jeddah starting with areas which were in the greatest need.

Al-Thaalba District, known as the third most dangerous area in Jeddah. Not anymore. “The park location was once an empty piece of land with broken glass, garbage, and used syringes scattered for neighborhood children to see,” said Mohammed Fayez, chairman of the FJP Board of Directors. “Today, the same location is now a dream come true for the neighborhood. Feuding families have reconciled, marriages were formed and the crime rate dropped significantly according to the police. Most importantly, residents were selected by fellow community members to manage and maintain the park. Residents turned into citizens with civic responsibility towards the park, their neighborhood and

After tremendous efforts in collaboration with the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry and eight long years to gain approval, FJP inaugurated its first park, Faisal Sports Park on Mar., 31, 2007. It was named after the late Faisal Zahid. His father dedicated the park to the neighborhood residents to honor the memory of his son, who had a passion for sports. It’s located in DESTINATION JEDDAH 81

themselves. Faisal Sports Park remains almost brand new even after 3 years of operation and up to 800 visitors (daily).” The second FJP project is transforming a huge parking lot two minutes away from Faisal Park into Amira Public Park. It took a year of designing and was officially opened on Dec., 30, 2009. With an open green area of 33,000 sqm for families and children, this park is the first of its kind in Jeddah with an amphitheatre, a fenced playground, a 500 m running track as well as a dedicated tent-topped area for occasions. Three different entrances lead into this park with each gate named after one of the families that have donated and participated in the making of Amira Park. Information and security points are also available. “We base our park designs 82 DESTINATION JEDDAH

on research and surveys conduct with neighborhood residents in order to understand their needs and wishes,” Fayez explained. “We intend to open many more parks starting with the less privileged areas. One park at a time.” One of the main factors behind the success of FJP projects is the proactive support of the Jeddah Municipality to get through the necessary logistics. If you are interested in volunteering, donating or starting similar projects of your own, please visit www.fjpsa.org.

Useful Arabic Words & Pronunciation It’s known worldwide that pronunciation is one of the most challenging steps in learning different languages. For example, Arabic has many dialogues, slangs and accents. Some of these dialogues can’t be understood by all Arabs. The most common dialogue is the Egyptian dialogue and the Lebanese dialogue. In this article we will try to show our reader some of the Traditional Saudi dialogue. To illustrate that, we added a picture of a throat to show the pronunciation of different Arabic Letters.
