We are so pleased to feature the work of Dennis Mullen, noted for his underwater and nature photography, this month on our covers of Northeast and Midwest Dive News. His photography exhibit “Ghost Ships of the Wisconsin Schooner Coast” opened at the Door County Maritime Museum in April. The exhibit will remain open until July 5. The exhibit is described as a virtual dive experience through Mullen’s photography. Mullen is an accomplished diver, with more than 1,000 dives logged. He works closely with the Wisconsin based Neptune’s Dive Club. Along with his extensive Great Lakes experience, he returns every winter to dive the waters of Bonaire, off the coast of Venezuela. Mullen’s sophisticated photographic style incorporates subject, surroundings, composition and exposure to create compelling images. www.dennismullen.com

elcome to the June edition of Northeast/Midwest Dive News. Our Magazine is chalk full of information about the local dive community as well as the diving world at-large. We are excited about this edition and are ready for Spring to finally get here. We know everyone is tired of the snow and crazy weather. I, for one, can’t wait to get into some great diving this year. I was able to spend some time at the beginning of May traveling around the eastern seaboard and wow, what great folks! I was treated with kindness and fed so much food that my wife is going to now have to put me on a diet. Let me just say the northeast really knows how to treat their guests. I really appreciated every second of it. So, here we go again. In this month’s edition we are visiting the Empress of Ireland. Join us as I talk to some of the experts about this incredible piece of history and we explore the great ship that, although it saw more loss of life than the Titanic, took a backseat in the history books. This edition also will see us visiting Land of Lakes, Wisconsin, with writer Mike Hughes. Hughes will showcase some of the area’s shipwrecks and tell readers why they need to consider Wisconsin diving as one of their stops this summer. Finally, join us once again as we explore the Philippines. Over 7000 islands make up this divers Mecca with ship and plane wrecks

A 20-year veteran of the St. Clair County Sheriff Dive Team, John Makuch, has passed away. He suffered a heart attack May 1 during training. John wore many hats serving on the Clay township board and diving with the Trotter team. John was an assistant dive chief and on the team’s board of directors. He was also certified in search and rescue diving, ice diving and in 2009 earned his dive master certification. He was a United States Coast Guard licensed captain and taught dive team members navigation, boat handling and sonar operation. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Eileen; a daughter, Ann Marie and her fiancé Craig, and a son, John. Anchor Bay Scuba, Fair Haven, Michigan, Don, myself and all the divers who knew him will miss John and his memorable personality. We will also miss his willingness to always lend a helping hand. His friendship will be deeply felt in the Midwest dive community. Please share this with our fellow divers when you get a chance. Thanks, Mickey Wrona

New York State Underwater Blueway Trail Project
The New York State Underwater Blueway Trail Project is searching for potential dive partners to participate in the project. The UBT will include the Village of Lake George (Lake George), Villages of Freeport (Atlantic Ocean), the cities of Dunkirk (Lake Erie), Geneva (Seneca Lake), Oswego (Ontario Lake) and Plattsburgh (Lake Chaplain). Initially, they will be starting with Geneva and Oswego. This project is to document, promote and preserve shipwrecks and other underwater cultural resources in New York waters and establish underwater scuba trails through dive sites. New England Cold Water Divers Live up to Their Name
In April, despite the forty-four degree water temperature and rain at Morton Park, in Plymouth, Massachusetts, nine volunteer divers joined together for the New England Cold Water Divers’ Club’s eleventh annual Dive for Earth Day underwater cleanup bringing up 70 lbs. of debris from beneath the water’s surface. Seascapes USA Earth Day Beach Cleanup & BBQ
On April 23 Seascapes USA celebrated Earth Day as a launching point for the 2011 diving season. The event took place at Prybil Beach in Glen Cove and included a free BBQ and Beach Clean Up. Sea Gypsies host 3D Presentation
The NYC Sea Gypsies is proud to host a long awaited 3D presentation of never before seen footage by Evan Kovacs June 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Eamonns (9 E. 45th St. 2nd Flr. NYC). Women Divers Hall of Fame Collects Recipes & Stories for Scholarships

Underwater Hockey Teams Pucking Around
The Underwater Hockey League has just completed the Atlantic Coast Championships in Underwater Hockey. The competition was held at GMU last weekend with 13 teams including one from Quebec, Canada. Well folks, it’s that time of year again. You know, when we start talking about the upcoming dive season as if we had not been diving all winter long. Yeah, right. Hopefully, you have been out with us over the winter and are looking forward to being able to shed a layer or two of undergarment as your dive season continues. If you truly are waiting for the weather to turn and the water to warm, it’s here! Sunday, May 1 saw the Long Island Divers Association joining Mike Carew of Captain Mike’s Diving and a host of local divers at the 2nd Annual Orchard Beach Clean-Up, Clambake and BBQ. This year the event was scheduled a couple of weeks later than last year, and we were rewarded with a beautiful sunny day (again!), but this time water temperatures broke the 50 degree mark. Unfortunately, I forgot my camera at home, but looking around through the crowd of celebrity divers I spotted Polina Reznikov, who graciously agreed to document the event. O
n July 31, 2011, the New England Aquarium Dive Club and The Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) will host the 10th annual Northeast Great Annual Fish Count (GAFC) event. The celebration will be centered at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester, Massachusetts. GAFC dives are planned at seven shore locations around Cape Ann, along with
dives at Nubble Light, York, ME. There will be a picnic, free raffles and door prizes. Every diver who submits data upon returning to the picnic area will receive one entry into the grand prize raffle drawing. We are expecting more than 150 divers to participate in the day’s celebration. The New England Aquarium Dive Club, Inc., which began in 1975, is one of the world’s oldest, largest and most active

In 2001, the acclaimed REEF Fish Survey Project and the Great Annual Fish Count was introduced to New England’s scuba-diving community. During our 9th Annual GAFC event held July 24, 2010, 98 divers conducted 116 fish and invertebrate surveys at 7 locations around Cape Ann and southern Maine, making this the largest single day GAFC event held in the United States for an unprecedented ninth year in a row! I
n the ice cold waters of the St. Lawrence Seaway a ghostly form sits in the emerald waters. A dive destination for many seeking the adventures of the past, the wreck of the Empress of Ireland has an almost mystical reputation. The subject of many articles and, in 2003 an expedition which became the book, “Dark Descent”, the Empress is shipwreck royalty at its purest. The story of the Empress of Ireland begins where it ends on an evening in May 1914. Like many other voyages, the 14,500-ton ocean liner was on a routine crossing of the Atlantic. Built for the Canadian Pacific Railway Co. in 1906 by
the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. of Glasgow, she was one of the largest passenger steamships operating at the time. On that fateful night she was carrying passengers and there was nothing in the air that would have indicated this night was different from any other. But it would be. In fact, it would be the most notorious night in the ship’s history. The Empress headed out into the open waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. A 6,028-ton coal carrier named the Storstad maneuvered in such a way that the ships ended up colliding with each other. Over 1,000 passengers’ and crew members’ lives ended that night and the big ocean liner sank to the bottom of Seaway.
Although more passengers perished on the Empress than on the Titanic, history has seen fit to give the Empress less of the limelight. Today divers continue to explore the mystery of the tragic wreck. At the time of the accident, Canadian Pacific, the company who owned the Empress, hired divers to dive the wreck and recover what they could. More than 200 bodies, the purser’s safe, the mail sacks, and some of the precious silver ingots aboard were recovered. After the initial divers it would be over half a century before divers would once again descend into the darkness to explore the Empress. But once the dives began, the adventures also began. Andre Menard began an expedition to find the location of the Empress which, over the years, had been lost. Armed with a basic idea of the area the Empress sank in, Menard located the ship. Experienced Syracuse diver Peter Perrault, and his fellow divers Ronni Gilligan and Fred Zeller, were the first divers to dive to the Empress again. Today, the Empress of Ireland serves as a dive destination for divers who hold both advanced experience and an adventurous soul. It is dubbed a technical dive due to the currents and because the ship is mostly still intact, allowing divers to explore inside the wreck. The Empress has claimed the lives of many divers who have not had the experience, skill or training to safely dive the site. Divers get lost inside, blown off from the current, have panic attacks, decompression injuries and air embolisms. The Empress is not for the new or beginner diver. Tyler Bradford of Advanced Diving & Expeditions based in Toronto agrees the Empress is a technical dive and he should know because his company does technical training and visits the Empress more than any other company. “We run expeditions to many of the more advanced dive sites globally,” says Bradford. “Our love affair with the Empress of Ireland began in 1998. Divers are intrigued with the history of the ship but also are amazed at the shape the shipwreck is in. Each year we do at least three trips to the Empress and some years, as many as eight. It is considered a pinnacle dive.” Bradford says dives to the Empress are especially rewarding because of the historical significance. “You’d be hardpressed to find anywhere else in the world an intact passenger ship that has had such

an impact on history,” Bradford says. “More passengers were lost on this ship than the Titanic yet it is not as well known. The wreck gives divers a sharp look at what the grand ships of its day were like back then. The decks are accessible and after 97 years to have so much of the ship intact is amazing.” Bradford says the conditions with which divers are faced when they dive the Empress also add to the dive. “It is technically a shallow wreck with the port rail at 85 ft. and the bottom at 150 ft. but the depth fluxes because there is a 16 ft. tide differential depending on when you choose to dive the wreck. The wreck provides many challenges but they are adventurous ones. We require divers to have a minimum of a decompression certification before we will take them to the Empress because there are environmental conditions that are challenging. The water is cold, the viz is often a challenge and sheer size of the ship can be disorienting.” Bradford says the size coupled with the low viz can be dangerous. “The bow anchor is enormous and the starboard prop is 25 ft. across,” Bradford says. “A diver lands on the hull and they are on a steel wall that is 65 ft. tall and 550 ft. long. The size in tandem with the viz makes it easy to get disoriented and this makes unknowingly swimming into the wreck a possibility. A diver can look up and suddenly find themselves inside the wreck not knowing just how to get out. There are stories of how people have gotten disoriented and suddenly found themselves deep within the wreck. It is so big a diver could end up in a lot of places with no clear way out or a guide line leading them out.” Heather Knowles, co-owner of 10-year-old Northern Atlantic Dive Expeditions says the Empress is a huge request for them. “People are interested because it is a piece of history they can actually touch,” Knowles says. “This was a significant tragedy for Canada but divers from all over the world want to see it. There are not many intact passenger ships of this type that are accessible to sport divers which makes this dive truly amazing.” There is an extraordinary book about the Empress of Ireland written by Kevin McMurray, author of “Deep Descent”, a book about diving 16

DIVEHEART’S 3RD ANNUAL SPLASH INTO SUMMER FUNDRAISER A SUCCESS O
n May 1 there were two things worth celebrating in Illinois, Diveheart’s 10th anniversary and their 3rd Annual Splash into Summer fundraiser and both were a raging success! Held at Ballydoyle Pub and Restaurant, the fundraiser featured a drawing with a grand prize worth $1000 (a Visa gift card) and the grand prize winner was Dave of the Triton Scuba Club. M
y great ancestor, a Naval Officer in the French Navy, first fell in love with this land of lakes when he acquired a homestead in Fon du lac, Wisconsin around 1798. This was right after the French had supplied a navy to help the colonies in their struggle against the King of England in the war that culminated with the Declaration of Independence some time in early July 1776. I tend to think my ancestors would have gone no farther west than Milwaukee,
Wisconsin had another French naval officer by the name of Jacques Cousteau brought to fruition the invention of the Aqualung regulator a mere 150 years earlier or so. The reason I think so is because all the great and little lake diving would have kept my ancestors too busy to think about heading out west. There really are two classes of lakes in and around Wisconsin; there are two fresh water seas, and a separate category for all the other lakes. The two major fresh water seas include Lake Superior and Lake
Michigan. Many a ship has found their resting place at the bottom of these two great lakes. Freshwater, unlike saltwater, preserves wrecks for decades and decades and this makes the area an adventure-aminute for divers. The Wisconsin Historical Society has made 18 laminated maps representing historical wrecks, such as the schooner Lucerne which sank in 1886 in 25 ft. of water and the steamer Sevona in 1905 in 20 ft., in Lake Superior. Maps of wrecks include the schooner Hetty Taylor in 1880 at 100 ft. as well as the paddleboat

MIDWEST DESTINATION Niagara, the Louisiana, and Pilot Island not to mention hundreds of others. Modern wrecks in these two bodies of water include the SS Wisconsin, built in 1881, 48 years old when it sank 6.5 miles SE of Kinosha, Wisconsin. It went down November 29, 1929. The steamship was just over 200 ft. long and carried iron castings, boxed freight, and 1929 era automobiles. If you anchor mid-ship and descend down the line you will come to an open hatch. Inside the compartment are an Essex, a Hudson, and a Chevrolet touring car. It’s a penetration dive to tour the car show, so it definitely requires wreck diver training. Like any dive on the lake, you have to be prepared for stray fishing lines below the surface and wind and wave action by the time you return to the surface because of changes in weather. The surface temperature may be 80 degrees in the summer, but expect 55 degrees the deeper you go. If the water dips in the 40’s keep an eye out for Chinook and Coho salmon. Jerry Guyer ,owner of LenDer Charters out of Milwaukee, says the diving on Lake Michigan, as well as other lakes in Wisconsin, always surprise divers. “They just can’t believe how clear the water is,” says Guyer. “I get a kick out of hearing divers whom we take out on our charter talk about the clarity.” Guyer also runs Pirates Cover Diving, a dive shop he started 32 years ago. “I started diving over 48 years ago,” says Guyer. “I have seen a lot of changes in the lakes diving and all of it has been good.” Guyer adds the Great Lakes are not the only good diving to be had in Wisconsin. “Devils Lake is a real good dive for beginners; it has good clean water, lots of fish and is located by Madison, which isn’t too far from here,” Guyer says. “Red Granite Quarry is popular too. Pier in 73 ft. of water. This 1928 steel hull steamship is 204 ft. long. “The Mack” was a car ferry before the bridge over the Straits of Mackinac was built. It’s only 50 ft. down to the top deck by the smoke stack, making it readily available to divers who don’t like to dive too deep. The Milwaukee Car Ferry built in 1903 was 338 ft. long. She went down in 90-120 ft. of water with 25 railroad cars, including two loaded with bathtubs, one with cheese, etc, and 52 passengers on board. She has a sister ship in a Michigan museum and her story was portrayed recently on the Discovery Channel by The Undersea Detectives.

The Prins Willem V, “The Willie”, is a 250 ft. long Dutch freighter that sank in 1954 at 93 ft. of depth resting on its starboard side. It’s one of the most popular wreck dives off the coast of Milwaukee. Be sure and take a dive light along to peek inside. There are dozens of wrecks to dive there. Guyer takes a large number of divers out to Prins Willem. “I do about 50 charters a year,” says Guyer. It is three miles out in 75 ft. of water; it has all the right conditions. But there are a lot of wrecks still in the Lakes that have not been discovered. I have found 24 wrecks in the last five years; all new wrecks.” As for the rest of the lakes, Lake Wazee

in Jackson County at 355 ft. is the deepest inland lake in Wisconsin. This former iron quarry has several thermo clines depending on the time of year. While the surface may be at 70 degrees, at 30 ft. it may be 40 degrees, and at 60 ft. of depth the temperature may be down to 34 degrees. Lake Wazee is also known for it petrified forests and fish cribs, which are log cabin like structures filled with rocks. These structures give small fish a chance to hide and swim between the cracks and gaps and survive predation by larger fish. Greg Such of Shipwreck Adventures, a retail dive shop and charter business in Two Rivers, Wisconsin says Lake Wazee is one his business gets asked about all the time. Such has owned the shop for over 7 years now and he himself has been a diver for over 20 years so he understands what divers are looking for. “The diving in Wisconsin lakes offers great shipwrecks,” Such says. “We spend a lot of time on the shorelines of the lakes where there are a large number of shipwrecks. The wrecks are what got me into technical diving.” Such says one of the nice things about Wisconsin shipwrecks is they are accessible for all levels of divers. “We take people out to the wrecks that are at every stage of their diving experience,” Such says. “The preservation of the wrecks is amazing because of the cold water. People come back in from a dive and they can’t say enough about the vis either and it has grown better over the years. One night about a year ago we took a group out for a night dive and one of the divers was just amazed that he could still see the bottom of the dive charter from 100 ft. below.” Many of the dive-able lakes in Wisconsin were quarries that filled in slowly with water, or filled in so fast some of the original mining equipment can still be found at the bottom of the lake. Devils Lake in Baraboo is only 48 ft. deep, but it is surrounded by massive 500 ft. cliffs and two sandy beaches which add to its character. Lake Owens at a maximum of 96 ft. deep is adjacent to a national park and resort recreational area. Most of the lakes mentioned are home to walleye, bass, black crappie, sunfish, northern pike, panfish and crayfish. Wisconsin dive clubs like to spice up the lake diving experience by including group events. At the southeastern Urge to Submerge event, diving clubs enjoy a good lake clean-up followed by a Pirate Festival at Lake Wazee. Mountain Bay has their annual quarry blast at a private quarry. I should mention that Badger State Dive Club in Milwaukee is the oldest dive club in the state. Buccaneer’s Dive Club has been an active dive club since 1970. The one thing all of these clubs have in common is a great place to play – the lakes of Wisconsin – and they all echo the same sentiment. If you love to dive, they have just the lake for you. ■

T
he Philippines is truly a wonder of natural beauty. Made up of over 7,000 islands (from the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park to the hidden coves of the islands), life has opened its arms here and invited everything in. Home to an abundance of fish, plant and coral life, the Philippines shows divers an experience the likes of which can’t be found anywhere else on earth. Over seven hundred species of fish, 12 species of sharks and close to 360 different types of hard and soft coral beckon divers from all over the world - many not only put it on their bucket list but they take great pains trying to come back over and over again. This is a Mecca for divers, scientists, explorers and photographers. In February 2010, I got the chance to see what the excitement was about. I traveled to the Philippines on a FAM trip and was treated to some of the most incredible diving! I stayed at the Atlantis Dumaguete. My adventure secured the Philippines as a personal favorite dive spots.

Just a short 45 minutes away from the resort by boat is Apo Island, one of the signature dive areas in the Philippines. A volcanic island covering 12 hectares, Apo Island is 7 kilometers off the southeastern tip of Negros Island and 30 kilometers south of Dumaguete City. Atlantis Dumaguete includes two island dive trips during a 7 night vacation at the resort and Apo Island is typically one of those. The 3 dive day with two morning dives followed by lunch on the island and then a 3rd afternoon dive offers divers a chance to see coral mounds and experience wall dives that have been known to blow your mind. Divers return to the resort about 4 p.m. and are then able to make the Mandarin Fish dive or the night dive. I was able to dive this area a lot and I have to say that it is now on my top dive sites list. In fact, I enjoyed the diving so much I did 18 dives in four days. I really felt a spiritual connection to the diving in the Philippines; it was all so intensely beautiful. The second island I visited in the area, nicknamed Isla del Fuego or the “Island of Fire”, Siquijor is the third smallest province
in the country. Often associated with mystic traditions, I was never bored there with 23 dive sites in total around Siquijor and most divers do three to four dives a day. Paliton Wall is a spectacular wall dive that starts at 7 ft deep and leads down to over 40 ft. The dive has great vis and the wall has a large overhang and a cathedral cave opening that reminded me why this place is nicknamed a Mecca. Soft corals and fans cover the surface of the wall. Divers are treated to fusiliers, mackerels, anthias, lionfish and glassfish. The Sunken Island is a sea mount that rises to within 10-12 ft. of the surface and then dives down to 35 ft. Turtles, barracuda and even eagle rays are regulars here. Dumaguete also sports an artificial tire reef built from old tires and laid just off the beach in front of the resort, and was created by marine biologists at Siliman University in 1977. As one of the world’s first tries at creating an artificial reef, the dive spot has done well. Once useless tires, the collection now serves as home to thousands of species of sea life and is used by the University as an ocean going lab. Divers from all over the

a diver. Boozer conveys exactly how I felt when he says that the resort is not a resort that just offers diving but is, instead, an allinclusive scuba diving resort. “Atlantis is a scuba diving resort and we are interested in taking divers diving,” Boozer says. “We have a PADI course diver who runs a safe operation and all of our dives are led by a professional. We typically take out six divers, dive guide and one boatman on every dive. It is more like a live a board schedule to be honest as we typically offer up to 5 dives per day including a night dive. I have been a lot of places and these are some of the warmest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and working with. I love it here.” The resort is 30 minutes away from Dumaguete City so you are close to the city yet cradled in a private oasis. The resort was wonderful, great food from a Filipino chef with German training (as he grew up in Germany). The rooms are already very comfortable; however, Boozer tells me that they are making even more changes in order to serve their guests. “We have 38 rooms now and we just opened up another suite with ocean view and an office space.” Boozer says. “We will soon open up a second suite that will be designed to be a luxury suite; it is quite large with a living room and all the normal amenities – it’s all about the comfort of our guests. There are going to be two or three more of the same in the near future. We are constantly expanding so we can offer the experience to more people.” If you are looking for a place to spend a couple of weeks doing non-stop back to back dives that will provide you with a new and different experience every single time, the Philippines is where you want to head. Who could resist 7000 islands surrounded by who knows what! ■
