USS Arthur W. Radford Plans Move Forward
Plans to scuttle a retired U.S. Navy destroyer as part of a threestate artificial reef system just 30 miles from the Ocean City Inlet, has been moved to April 2011 as final preparations on the vessel continue and the window for suitable weather starts to close. The USS Arthur W Radford will be the largest ship sunk on the East Coast as an artificial reef. This wreck will be an exciting addition to the local and national dive industry. It will lay in approximately 140 feet of water with the top deck of the ship around 60 feet deep allowing for the whole range of divers from recreational to the technical. Dive News Teen Writer Brianna Darcy Awarded Scholarship
Dive News teen writer and diver Brianna Darcy was awarded a $1000 scholarship from the Women Divers Hall of Fame and Ocean Pals through their Marine Careers Program, a part of Beneath the Sea Dive show. The Marine Careers Program’s scholarship is one of the few that are available for Brianna’s age, 14 years old, however according to her dad Bill, once Brianna turns 16 a “world of scholarships will open up for her” and she can’t wait. The scholarship will be awarded during the Women Divers Hall of Fame lunch at this years’ Beneath the Sea Dive Show to be held March 25 – 27 at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, New Jersey. Blackbeard’s Sword, Found! Archaeologists Discover Pirate Treasure Off North Carolina Coast
It’s likely Edward Teach didn’t need much to scare his enemies. Better known as Blackbeard, he boasted a thick mass of facial hair so intimidating that it got immortalized in history. Archaeologists now suspect they’ve found one more clue behind the pirate’s menace: Blackbeard’s sword. These include fragments of a gilded hilt and pommel, possibly of French design. The shipwreck has been worked on since 1997.
The Frogmen Volunteers
The Frogmen Volunteers originated in 1988, as an offshoot of the Gillmen, for the purpose of giving the terminally ill children at The Hole In The Wall Camp an opportunity to try SCUBA in the camp’s own pool. After working through all the medical concerns, they received permission to take the kids underwater to a maximum depth of six feet. Today’s campers are limited to a depth of three feet and there must be one certified diver for every two children. There are from 50 to 80 kids who want to try SCUBA every time the volunteers go to the camp. Please give some time to this worthwhile cause which brings so much joy to kids who need all the joy they can. The Hole In The Wall Camp is located in Ashford, CT off Route 44. Dive industry says good-bye to cornell
P
aul Cornell, (1956 – 2011), a northeastern diver with a love for the Detroit Red Wings, passed away suddenly of pancreatic cancer Feb. 4th. Paul worked for the New York State Department of Transportation for many years and was an avid scuba diver. Paul became a certified diver in June 1985. He joined NYSDA and became the Digest

Editor in 1988. Each month, Paul told the special story of diving in New York State. Paul also served a NYSDA President from 1994 to 1999. He was a YMCA and SEI SCUBA Instructor for the past 13 years, taking over instruction in the Gloversville area after the death of Archie Stewart. Paul was a founding member, president and newsletter editor of the Adirondack Aquanautical Society, which he helped form 21 years ago. In 1992, he was named NYSDA’s Diver of the Year, for his service, dedication and promotion of the sport and in 2010 Paul was named Diver of the Year by Beneath the Sea. This was one of his proudest moments. Paul was actively involved with NY State agencies and departments in preserve site planning and management, and in 2009, Paul was appointed by Gov. Paterson to the Hudson River-Black River Regulating Board, which controls the flow of the upper Hudson River. He organized NYSDA conventions; worked with Joe Zarzynski on the Lake George Bateaux Project and the 1758 Radeau Project, set up crews and monitored the Wreck of the Champlain preserve site in Lake Champlain near Westport, NY, and has been a volunteer in the area for more than twenty years. He was a member of the New York State Divers Association and the Adirondack Aqua Nautical Society. A service was held on Feb. 7 at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home in Gloversville, NY. ■

the passing of a friend
J
ames A Boyd, (1941-2010) a long time diver and friend has passed away. Jim died on Friday, Dec. 31, 2010. Jim was a good friend to many people in the railroad and diving community. He worked for Carstens Publications where he served as editor of Railfan and Railroad magazine from its inception in 1974 through to his retirement in 1998. Jim always enjoyed diving and after several years of informal heavy gear diving with close friends he started the North East Diving Equipment Group. Over the years he contributed a lot to the sport including
the Memorial Day and Labor Day Dive Rallies. For his services to the Historical Diving Society, Jim was awarded the first E.R. Cross Award in 1994. He was one of only a few recipients to receive the award personally from E.R. Cross. Jim is survived by a sister and nephew in Dixon, Illinois. Beneath the sea 2011 T
he arrival of the month of March is greatly anticipated at the Long Island Divers Association, as it signals the impending start of a new dive season and all of the wonderful events that come with it. One of the biggest events of our calendar year is Beneath The Sea, the North American continent’s largest scuba diving exposition. Held annually for over 35 years, Beneath The Sea is attended by over 14,000 divers, who come to visit nearly 400 vendors from around the world. Guests also have the opportunity to attend workshops, seminars and parties galore. In addition to features such as a Public Safety Divers Conference, the Diver of the Year Awards Banquet, Women’s Diver Hall of Fame inductions, David Doubilet the International Underwater Film Festival and way too many other events to list here, guests enjoy a three day celebration of all that is great about the sport of scuba diving. Naturally, the focus of the Long Island Divers Association is all that is great about local, meaning Northeast, diving. Our participation at Beneath The Sea is all about what is going on here in our own back yard. This year’s BTS display will feature loads of artifacts recently recovered from Northeast shipwrecks, carefully preserved and displayed for the entire world to see. Notable among them are the bell recovered last year from the Andrea Doria by local divers Carl

Bayer and Ernie Rookey, and the seven and a half foot tall auxiliary helm recovered from the Ayuruoca, expedition style, by the team from Captain Joe Mazraani’s dive boat Tenacious. The Tenacious team was a who’s-who of Northeast wreck diving talent, including local legend and LIDA member Pat Rooney. Our display will also include artifacts that we have located in local museums as a result of our research on the HMS Sylph, including a musket that is believed to have come from the Sylph that was recovered by the crew of a steam dredge working near the wreck site in the late 1920’s. This artifact was located in the attic of the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum. We also located the Captains sea chest during a visit to

the Southampton Historical Museum. The chest, complete with the Captain’s name engraved on a brass plaque on the cover, washed ashore at the time of the shipwreck in January of 1815 and remained in private hands for many years before being donated to the museum. We would like to thank Zach Studenroth, Southampton Town Historian and Director of the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum, and Tom Edmonds, Director of the Southampton Historical Museum for allowing us to display these irreplaceable historical artifacts. The time that we have spent in local museums as part of our research has been incredibly rewarding. If you have not spent any time in one of your local museums recently you owe it to yourself to go check them out!
Also included in our display, in cooperation with Bob Rusnak and the Historical Diving Society, will be a JIM Suit from the 1970’s. A JIM Suit is what is commonly called an “atmospheric suit” which means that while a diver is wearing it in the water, much like a small personal submarine, the diver is never exposed to more than one atmosphere of pressure. Featuring a self contained rebreather system, 72 hour dives to 2000 feet and more were possible, with no decompression obligation! This suit comes to us courtesy of Oceaneering Int., a world leader in submersible systems. It was retired in 1980 and has been on display at the Living Seas at Walt Disney World since 1981. I can’t wait to take it for a spin in Lake Ronkonkoma!

Also on display will be a prototype of the next generation of atmospheric suit, called the Exosuit, courtesy of Phil Nuytten of Nuytco Research Limited. This incredible piece of equipment is actually a form fitting submarine that you can actually swim in! The suit is capable of withstanding the pressures present at well over 1000 feet (2000 actually), but for safety reasons you should try not to exceed 1000. The Exosuit features fully articulated joints and a rebreather system rated for 85 hours! It can

be equipped with boots for walking on the ocean floor, fins for swimming, or a surface powered propulsion system for hours of deep sea work. Bob Rusnak and the Historical Diving Society will once again be a major presence at Beneath The Sea, with displays of vintage commercial, military and civilian diving gear from around the world. Of particular interest will be a replica of the underwater diving helmets used in the epic underwater film “20,000 Leagues Beneath the Sea”.
There will also be a raffle to win a brand new, fully functional, US Navy Mark V diving helmet made by the DESCO Corporation. This could very well be the best $5 that you ever spent! We have spent a lot of time talking about the display that we will have at Beneath The Sea, but there is also some very exciting news about this year’s event that we would like to share with you. Every year since 2000, the Women Divers Hall Of Fame has presented its incoming inductees at the Diver of the Year Awards Banquet. This year’s inductees are a deserving group, but two of the ladies are very near and dear to our hearts. Congratulations go out to Captain Maureen Langevin of Dive Voyager Productions, and Deborah Whitcraft of the New Jersey Maritime Museum. “Captain Mo” is a film videographer and producer, scuba instructor, boat captain and a really great friend to the Long Island Divers Association. She and her husband Steve have presented numerous productions at our annual Film Festival, and have produced several productions about LIDA activities. In fact, Dive Voyager Productions will be presenting a documentary on our research into the loss of the HMS Sylph at Beneath The Sea on Saturday afternoon. Deborah Whitcraft is the President and Curator of the New Jersey Maritime Museum. We went down to check out Deb’s museum at the unveiling of the Stolt Dagali anchor display last year, and I have to tell you that it is one of the most impressive facilities that I have every seen! Bright, clean, airy and open, once inside you may never want to leave. The museum is home to thousands of historical documents pertaining to Northeast shipwrecks and maritime history, and a tremendous display of artifacts dating back hundreds of years. Not only that, the museum is open free to the public all year ‘round! Deb’s work in creating the museum, along with her work

THE (UNDERWATER) GARDEN STATE By Michael Salvarezza and Christopher P. Weaver
The water was completely black. Although we had descended through clear, almost tropical water, a few minutes of digging in the muck had thrown up clouds of inky dark mud and visibility was now completely obliterated. With our eyes useless in this curtain of silt, we used our fingers to feel along the bottom. In this surreal atmosphere, our ears easily picked up the sound of tinkling glass from all around us. We were bottle diving on the wreck of the Asfalto, an unknown wreck sitting in 95 feet of water, 16 miles southwest of New York’s Jones Inlet. The Asfalto is a low-lying wreck, about 300 feet in length thought by some to be a barge that sank on March 12, 1932. And despite the ease with which the bottom is silted up, many divers flock to this site for the opportunity to discover antique bottles of every shape and size. The wreck lies close to the site used by garbage barges years ago to discharge their cargo and in the decades since its sinking, it has become a magnet for old-fashioned bottles of all types rolling down a small underwater slope. Today, this site is a treasure trove of fascinating artifacts. Its just one of the many special underwater sites that New Jersey holds in store for divers exploring her waters. All along the 130-mile coastline of the Garden State, divers can explore a wide variety of wrecks of every time period in American history. And for shore divers there are plenty of adventures to be found within swimming distance of land. For divers, the words “Jersey Shore” have a totally different meaning! Shark River Inlet is one of New Jersey’s premier shore diving hotspots. Located in Avon-by-the-Sea in Northern New Jersey, Shark River Inlet is a small tidal river inlet with stone jetties or bulkheads on both sides that offers diving opportunities in several locations along the jetties and upstream in the river. Like all New Jersey shore dives, visibility can vary from a few feet to 15 feet. Divers exploring these waters will find an abundance of Anemones, Crabs, Lobsters and bottom dwelling fish. For local divers, Shark River Inlet is not to be missed. There are similar sites up and down the New Jersey coast but a favorite for divers in southern New Jersey is the Holgate Jetty. Located on Long Beach Island, this cement block and rock jetty offers divers opportunities to look for Lobster, crabs and other crustaceans along with schools of blackfish. In the late summer and early autumn, Holgate Jetty is often home to tropical fish making their way up the Gulf Stream and divers looking to stock their home aquariums flock here to find these wayward treasures. And for the truly stout of heart, look for the occasional Bull Shark or Thresher shark that can sometimes be found patrolling these inshore waters. While New Jersey’s shore dives can be rewarding, the excitement of exploring the shipwrecks offshore is unequaled. Because of the shipping lane approaches to New York City, ships have been sinking in these waters for centuries. Accidents, weather related tragedies and wartime activity have sent ships of all types to the bottom. Some estimates of the total number of wrecks offshore from New Jersey are between 4000 and 7000! Many of these shipwrecks are accessible to divers. For example, The RP Resor was a 445-foot tanker, which sank in 130 feet of water on February 28, 1942 after being torpedoed by the 14

NORTHEAST DESTINATION U-578. After a massive explosion, the RP Resor burned for several days and the flames were visible from the beaches at Asbury Park. It finally sunk beneath the waves and today the wreck, which is deteriorating each year, is one of New Jersey’s most prominent wreck dives. The wreck of the Varanger lies 35 miles offshore from Sea Isle City, another victim of a torpedo attack from a German U-boat in 1942. The Varanger was a tanker loaded with 12,750 barrels of oil and was inbound to New York from Curacao when she met with tragedy, sinking in 140 feet of water. The Varanger, like the RP Resor, is often blessed with exceptional visibility and abundant marine life. Bergall, Sea Bass, Pollack and Eels are plentiful on this wreck. The Stolt D’Agali was a Norwegian steel-hulled tanker that collided in a dense fog with an Israeli luxury liner, the Shalom, in 1964 on Thanksgiving Day. Both ships survived the collision, but a 140-foot section of the Stolt’s stern was sliced off and promptly sank. Today, this section of the ship is one of the most popular New Jersey dive sites. Rising from 130 feet of water to 65 feet, there is ample profile and plenty of picturesque wreckage to explore. The Stolt D’Agali often boasts clear water and plentiful marine life. On one dive, we sat transfixed on the top of the wreck while a pair of 8-foot Mola Mola circled us within
touching distance for the better part of 45 minutes! Interested divers can also catch a glimpse of history by visiting the Museum of NJ Maritime History where they can see the recovered anchor from the Stolt. Nearby to the Stolt D’Agali is the wreck of the USS Algol. The USS Algol was intentionally sunk on November 22, 1991 as part of the New Jersey Artificial Reef program. Sitting in 140 feet of water, but reachable in 70 feet, the Algol presents exciting opportunities for divers of all skill levels. For properly equipped, trained and experienced divers, there are excellent penetration dives to be made on this enormous wreck. Although the wreck was prepared for safe diving prior to its

NEW JERSEY sinking, the accumulation of silt over the years makes any penetration potentially dangerous without the proper training! Divers exploring inside the wreck will find many pieces of equipment left intact, while divers swimming outside along its superstructure will find a wreck completely covered in marine life. Another fascinating part of the artificial reef program in New Jersey is the DelJerseyLand inshore reef site. Lying in water equidistant from Cape May, New Jersey, Ocean City, Maryland and the Indian River Inlet in Delaware, this is a cooperative regional effort first permitted in 2006. Today, in addition to the Gregory Poole, a retired 175-foot Navy vessel that was sunk as part of the reef in 2007, the reef consists of a number of retired Brightliner New York City subway cars. Plans to further expand the reef are underway with the anticipated sinking of the USS Arthur W. Radford, a 563-foot destroyer last deployed during Operation Enduring Freedom that will become the longest vessel ever sunk intentionally in the Atlantic Ocean when it is eventually sunk in these waters. Other popular wrecks often visited by the New Jersey and New York based charter boats include the Bald Eagle, a broken up barge in 90 feet of water, The Texas Tower, the remains of a sunken Air Force radar platform, The Gulf Trade, an oil tanker sunk in 90 feet of water, The Pinta, a freighter sitting on its side on 90 feet of water and the Tolten, a Chilean freighter sunk in 95 feet of water after being torpedoed in 1942. With so many choices, a New Jersey Wreck diver can spend a lifetime exploring sunken maritime history in these waters and never run out of new adventures! Whether you are a nautical historian, an artifact hunter, a lover of marine life or an underwater photographer, New Jersey offers something for everyone. FROM FISHING TRAWLER TO FISH HAVEN: THE MANDY RAY

For divers, Long Island’s waters are known for shipwrecks. Some of these wrecks are famous for the challenges they present: The USS San Diego, Coimbra, U-853 and, of course, the Andrea Doria represent some of the more difficult wrecks to dive in these waters. Experienced, well-trained and adequately equipped divers should only visit these shipwrecks. But for divers of almost all levels, there are some beautiful wrecks within reach. In October of 1998, the Mandy Ray, a 126 foot fishing trawler became the latest addition to the Shinnecock Artificial Reef. This reef, a collection of small shipwrecks, obsolete armored vehicles and other assorted material, lies just two miles south of the Shinnecock Inlet in waters ranging between 80 and 95 feet in depth. All told, the extent of this reef is about 35 acres (680 yards by 250 yards). The sinking of the Mandy Ray was the end result of hard work between the owners of the dive boat Jean Marie (Ken and Jean Marie Jastrzebski, who tragically died in a car crash in 2005) and the DEC and the Cornell Cooperative Extension, who joined together to arrange for the sinking of this vessel.
Recently, we set out on a warm, summer day from the Ponquogue Marina aboard the dive vessel Sidekick, a 6-pack offering in shore and offshore wreck diving charters throughout the season. After a short, 25 minute run to the site we were ready to go diving. The Mandy Ray sits upright and is basically intact. Divers reach the wreck in about 45 feet of water and have to strain to reach 92 feet of depth in the sand if they find themselves in some of the small washouts alongside the wreck. Swimming over the top of the wreck, the wheelhouse, the bow and the stern section all make for a captivating dive for both experienced and novice open water divers. Visibility on this wreck is generally quite good, although it is subject to the same variable Atlantic Ocean conditions that all wrecks in our area experience. After circumnavigating the wreck on the outside, we decided to venture inside the wheelhouse, a very picturesque location with ample openings and plenty of ambient light. There are some interesting swimthroughs and we spent about half of our dive inside this beautiful little shipwreck.

Along the way, we spotted Black Sea Bass, schools of Blackfish, Bergall and even a large Conger eel poking its head out from a small compartment deeper inside the wreck. Indeed, the irony of the situation struck us: The Mandy Ray was now home to the same fish life that she once was in the business of hunting! The Mandy Ray is a perfect introduction to the world of Northeast Shipwreck Diving. Because of her location, the trip to the site is quick, the boats leave at a reasonable time in the morning and they return you to shore in time for a late lunch. What more could you ask for? The Host for this anniversary year International Film Festival will be David Doubilet. David spends his life photographing the underwater world, doing so since he put his Brownie Hawkeye camera
in a rubber anesthesiologist’s bag at age 12. Fascinated by our constantly changing seas, his personal and professional challenge is to photograph the essence of our oceans from the smallest plankton to the largest predators, creating that special image which makes a difference. David is an author/photographer for National Geographic Magazine who has contributed over 70 stories since his first in 1971. He is a feature columnist, contributing editor, author of books on the sea. His years of world travel and photography has give David a wealth of experience and the stories that are companion to such experience. David Doubilet will come to Beneath the Sea’s Saturday Night Film Festival as Host and weave together a unique evening of shining celebrity. This year Howard and Michele Hall return to Beneath the Sea’s stage after, in this writer’s opinion, a too long absence. This husband and wife team of natural history filmmakers and photographers

Feodor Pitcairn Feodor Pitcairn began photographing wildlife while in his teens. Since 1967, he has worked predominantly underwater, constantly perfecting his portrayal of marine animals within the context of their underwater seascape. In 2008, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. opened the largest exhibit in its history, the Sant Ocean Hall. A keynote feature of the hall is the Ocean Odyssey presentation – eight highdefinition projections that wrap 200 feet of the halls upper bay.

Leandro Blanco Leandro Blanco is an underwater photographer who listens carefully to his internal motivations. In Leandro’s case, he hears music. This night he will present “Demons of the Deep.” Narrated by tonight’s Host, David Doubilet, they will take us on a dive in a surrealistic abyss, reminding us of how Salvador Dali might have created the oceans had God given him their artistic dominion. the general well-being of the ocean. It is as if, with the passing of the Captain, more than one voice was needed to translate the oceans roar. The Captains son, Jean-Michel Cousteau – Beneath the Sea will honor him as their Diving Pioneer this year. Jean-Michel’s first dive was on his father’s regulator in 1945 when he was 8 years old. He owns a dive resort in Fiji, founded the Ocean Futures Society, a marine conservation and education organization, conducts research, and develops marine education programs. Today, Jean-Michel Cousteau is working on a documentary highlighting the epic and disastrous 2010 Gulf Oil Spill off the coast of Louisiana. A producer of over 70 films on the oceans, he appeared in Spongebob Squarepants Movie. In Finding Nemo, Jean-Michel interacts with characters from the film, and look for him in the IMAX documentary film Coral Reef Adventure. Pierre-Yves Cousteau, Captain Jacques Cousteau’s son, is the dynamic young voice of The Cousteau Society. His current project and the focus of his being at Beneath the Sea is his creation of Cousteau Divers. Fabien Cousteau Fabien Cousteau’s official biography begins with a reminiscence of growing-up on the salt-stained decks of his grandfather’s ships, Calypso and Alcyone. Larkin High School teams up with Rogest and Our World Underwater
“Think globally and act locally”. This is the philosophy of internationally renowned marine artist, Ron Steven, better known as Rogest in the art and diving world. There is no better place to put those words into action, than in the Midwest at the culturally diverse Larkin High School (LHS), where glimpses of the outside world and opportunities for exposure outside the community are extremely limited. SDI Master Instructor and S.T.A.R.S. International founder Kevin Vaughn derived a creative method to introduce life skills, marine education, and art through collaboration with Rogest. The developmental needs of the students and the outreach of Rogest have come together this year in parallel to a 2-year agreement with Larkin High School to host a unique mentoring program that beckoned Rogest’s support. By combining this unique scuba mentoring program with the art world and marine education the opportunity has been created to reach many people worldwide to encourage them to protect and conserve the world’s oceans. Colleen Gallagher, a nurse in the ICU and also a spear fisherman, started her charity called Diving for a Cause. She had witnessed a friend spearfish, take the fish and give back to the local community. She wanted to do the same so she created DFAC. Now Gallagher uses her extra money, along with the help from host countries, to subsidize the costs for divers to travel to destinations and give back to the local communities with fish. She also wanted to give back locally so DFAC joined with the local dive club on the east coast at the Hatteras and they are raising money with a spearfishing event in July for Cystic Fibrosis. dive industry loses noted oceanographer Richard A. Cooper will be awarded the Diver of the Year award at the Beneath the Sea show in Secaucus New Jersey, Saturday, March 26, at the film festival.

oted Oceanographer Richard A. Cooper, Ph.D. passed away Jan. 28th. Richard “Dick” was an oceanographer and Professor Emeritus at the University of Connecticut. Early in his career he was a biologist at the National Marine Fisheries Service in Woods Hole, Mass. where he led the Manned Undersea Science & Technology group. During this time he was involved with many of our nation’s first experiments in saturation diving and undersea habitation. In 1982, he received the prestigious NOGI Award for Diver of the Year in Science. Dick was also a former director of the National Undersea Research Center at the University of Connecticut where he implemented research programs using underwater vehicles across New England, the Great Lakes, and in places around the world. He founded the High School Aquanaut Program that created oncein-a-lifetime opportunities for hundreds of high school students and teachers in ocean sciences. Starting in the mid-1990s, Dick became director of the Marine Sciences & Technology Center at UConn for 10 years where he was instrumental, among other things, in the construction of two new stateof-the-art research and education buildings in addition to the university’s flagship research vessel, the R/V Connecticut. He was the founder and driving force behind Ocean Technology Foundation and the SeaBase1 Corp. Most recently, Dick was nominated for Diver of the Year award from Beneath the Sea. On his behalf, the Cooper family is expected to accept the award during a ceremony in March. ■ 24

ometimes you just have to push on even when others can’t see what you see… this is something one young woman with a passion for the underwater world and family travel learned by trial and success. Now, 11 years later Kids Sea Camp President and Woman Scuba Diving Hall of fame diver Margo Peyton not only gets to share her vision quest but also has gotten to see it soar beyond her wildest dreams. What began as one scuba mom’s quest for family dive adventure drawn out on a restaurant napkin has now become a legacy. Kids Sea Camp, corporate based in South Carolina, provides families with ocean oriented adventures in exotic dive destinations and liveaboards around the world. Those signing on for the sea based eco adventures are treated to a full week of dive events and educational programs for families with kids age 4-16. Families are treated to 7 nights worth of accommodations, diving, meals, whale shark safaris, Mantas, white water rafting, zip lining, sailing, surfing and many other activities and fun. The adventures cater to both adults and kids. Kids take part in PADI diver and other Specialty courses all while learning about the ocean’s. Families come bacl each year to dive with each other and meet new families with kids that dive. “When I began years ago, not many resorts could understand the concept 26
of catering to kids,” Peyton said. “The resorts didn’t look at kids as an incredible worthwhile clientele that would grow their client base for years to come. I had to do the foot work and show the value for the destination as a whole that kids aren’t difficult or costly and could benefit them for today and tomorrow.” Peyton says now with her ability to fill their resorts for 2-3 solid weeks every year with families, they resorts get it, and they love the fun change of pace with kids. Kids Sea Camp has really blossomed. Peyton says. “We have contributed to over 4,000 certified PADI youth divers and thousands of specialty certs for and adults. Kids Sea Camp was given an Emmy award for best educational kids programs with Kids Guides,” “It has been stated by Rainer Jens a National Geographic writer, who attended with his family, to be one of the best family adventures ever. The main objective of Kids Sea Camp is to promote and educate with a strong focus on conservation. This is accomplished while providing a safe family friendly place for families to enjoy the underwater world together. Kids attending the camp are challenged and motivated while having fun in their age appropriate programs. Students share encounters with multiple marine animals and activities guided by a staff dedicated to teaching in safe professional hands on setting.

Diving in Ohio rocks; not only in that good old fashioned musical way like in the American Music Hall of Fame in Cleveland, but also in the solid way like from the water filled remnants of rock quarries. The numerous Midwestern quarries that gave up their souls to pave the Ohio roadways, making it easier for divers to get from one dive site to another, for which we are all appreciative. Yep…Ohio definitely rocks! Scuba diving is big in Ohio. I don’t really know if it’s because there are so many local places to dive or if it’s because so many local divers are active that they discover, create, and/or proliferate so many dive sites; but whatever the reason, you have a wide assortment of dive sites to choose from. Lakes, quarries and in one case, even salt water allow divers to experience many underwater environments in Ohio. Starting from north to south here are a few I have come across. Nelson Ledges Quarry Park Nelson Ledges Quarry Park is near Garretsville. Bass, blue gill, fresh water 28 28
jellyfish (too small to sting), crappie, and catfish all make their home here. There is a cabin cruiser to dive as well as hundreds of interesting rock formations. Local clubs have Halloween and treasure dives at Nelson Ledges and it is a family outing favorite as well. White Star Park White Star Park in Gibsonburg is an 800-acre park that has a 15-acre lake. The lake is 40 ft. depth going down to 50 ft. in the center. It also sports one hole at 60 ft. and another at 80 ft. Besides a sunken cabin cruiser, there is a Frito Lay truck, a phone booth, sail boat, other small boats and a car that needs some repair plus a good wash and wax. Portage Quarry Recreation Club Inc. MIDWEST DESTINATION silo also goes up 55 ft. under the water’s surface. The max depth is around 70 ft. and three sides of this quarry have carved stone ledges. Zebra mussels have cleared up the water and dive club members from Milan, Michigan have put together an underwater navigation course. D.A.N. has an annual barbeque here in July. Gilboa Quarry Gilboa Quarry in Ottawa is a 14-acre limestone substrate that has a shallow side 5 to 65 ft. deep. The non-shallow side dips down to 130 ft. A Grumman plane and a Sikorsky helicopter are home to paddle fish, koi, trout and turtles. D.U.I. has an annual D.O.G. rally at this site. Gilboa often serves as a certification and training site for local instructors. Natural Springs Natural Springs, formerly known as France Lake, is near the southern Ohio city of Paris. Here you may encounter bass, catfish, blue gill, grass carp, and freshwater jellyfish. Circleville Twin Quarries Circleville Twin Quarries, brought to you by Todd’s Scuba, encompasses 10-acres of water. It has a school bus and a Cessna 421B. Call ahead if you want to dive here to make sure that the gate will be unlocked. This is a fairly new dive site so folks are still exploring. Many of the parks and quarries have small fees and waivers to sign. Some have camping, cottages, RV, or other overnight facilities. Many also have dive service centers and gift shops. Some have semi enclosed gearing up areas while others have heated changing rooms including access to hot showers. If all this isn’t enough for you,

The lake averages only 62 ft. deep and has hundreds of historical shipwreck sites as well as some nice islands. The underwater preserve around Kelly’s Island sports three vessels. The Hanna, a scow schooner, went down in 1886 in only 3-8 ft. of water and is an interesting dive while the F.H. Prince, a propeller steamer, floundered in 5-18 ft. of water and sank in 1911.
Other popular ships to dive along the coast include the Mecosta, a 281 ft. long wood propeller steamer approximately 9 miles from Cleveland. Near Port Clinton rests the 135 ft. long prison ship Success in 16-20 ft. of water. The Success was a teak wood Barquetine and burned then sank in 1946. The ribs and keel are still visible. The

60 ft. long ship the Detroiter sank in 20 ft. of water in the 1980’s just inside the same area. A few years ago using side sonar, divers located the Anthony Wayne near Vermillion, Ohio. The 155 ft. long side-wheel steamer sank in 1893. According to records it was carrying passengers, wine, and livestock. It was also said that she had gold on board and in the captain’s safe. The Anthony Wayne is in 50 ft. of water. Now for an interesting dive adventure in salt water; according to my sources, local divers get to help out at the Cincinnati Zoo in the salt-water manatee exhibit. What could be more rewarding than helping out with an 8 to 15 ft. long sea cow that can weigh up to 3,500 lbs.? Sounds like an adventure to me. For other aquatic adventures locals can also cross the state line and visit the Newport Aquarium in Kentucky and be part of the D.I.V.E Program. The real name is Dive Interactive Volunteer Educational Program. You can help out by preparing meals, cleaning habitats, working with fish, and working with visiting tourists almost all simultaneously. Other out of state dive sites include Summerville Lake in Indiana which can drop down to 300 ft. near the base of the dam, but averages around 20-50 ft., Dream Lake at Hidden Paradise Campground which boasts 4-5 ft. long paddlefish, Phillips Quarry near

Muncie which drops down to 55 ft. with lots of fish and algae covered objects and France Park in Logansport, Indiana where you can find a 1940’s school bus, a pickup truck and other assorted objects people have donated over the years. So as you probably can tell by the great number of local places to dive, the only excuse not to dive in Ohio and the surrounding area is in the winter when the
snow is too deep. However, the water clarity may be over 70 ft. of visibility in the winter, so even then, divers in Ohio can be found in the local quarries and lakes utilizing their drysuits. When the mild weather returns however, the boat dive charter operations begin again on Lake Erie and the annual cycle continues. Perhaps this helps explain why the local divers dive so much and why diving in Ohio rocks. ■

I
’d heard stories. I had an idea formulated in my mind, but in the end Bonaire was not at all what I expected…it was more… much more. Bonaire is an island located in the southern Caribbean. It is relatively small and isn’t so much a part of the Netherlands in terms of statehood but instead is a special municipality of the country in the same way that Guam is a territory of the United States. The dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles took place in October 2010 so the islands are just now getting used to their new status however they have hit the ground running in terms of promoting themselves. Bonaire, Aruba and Curacao make up a group referred to as the “ABC islands of the Leeward Antilles” and here, diving is huge. Located just 30 miles from Curacao and 50 miles north of Venezuela the area enjoys calm weather most of the time making it great for exploring. The island of Bonaire itself is 24 miles long and 3-7 miles wide with its highest point, Brandaris Hill, sitting just 784 ft. above sea level. The climate on Bonaire was a bit of a surprise for me personally. I had expected to find lush vegetation and while there was some green it was actually more arid. The yearly average temperature is 82 degrees while the water temp sits at a bath water warm 80 degrees. The sun shines year 32
around with only 22 inches on average of rainfall making this a diver’s delight in terms of great diving weather. It was tropical at the same time it was desert, a bit of an oxymoron for me. I had never experienced that before. It was an amazing new experience. Divers flock to Bonaire for its pristine reefs and diverse marine life. The waters around Bonaire are set aside as an official marine park making the diving an opportunity to see the environment untouched and unspoiled. The area has been legally protected since 1979. The viz is exceptionally clear. Underwater photographers usually have Bonaire at the top of their bucket lists. My trip focused on the marketing and infrastructure of the area so I was able to see both the diving end and the travel end of Bonaire. Staying in different properties during this trip allowed me to really get a feel for what traveling and staying in Bonaire was really like. Even though I felt like a bit of a gypsy diver, I was still welcomed with open arms at each leg of my journey. The Bonaire Tourism group as well as many local dive businesses played host to me and other journalists during the trip. Although the political system is changing due to the dissolution, the Dutch are currently beginning to make a big investment there. My first stay was the Caribbean Club Bonaire and I was not disappointed with

this initiation into Bonaire travel diving. Caribbean Club Bonaire is a part of a larger bunch of hotels that make us the ever popular Buddy Dive Resorts. Located north of Kralendijk at the foot of Bonaire’s hills Caribbean Club Bonaire is a friendly resort as well as affordable. It sports a restaurant, bar, two swimming pools, an on-site dive shop/activity center and a wide range of room types. If you are a lone traveler they have basic studios and if you want to travel in the ultimate style you can stay in one of their luxurious two-bedroom cottages overlooking the waters of the Caribbean Sea. There are kitchens in the one-bedroom cottages and the studios are equipped with the utensils and equipment you need to prepare a meal. One of the things I noticed was that most of the accommodations on Bonaire appeared to offer in-room kitchens. The second place I stayed was the Sand Dollar Condominium Resort located where the beaches are only 50 yards from the edge of a vast diving wall that stretches for miles along southern Bonaire’s protected shoreline offering divers a unique and easily assessable dive right out the door. Visibility for divers in the area of the Sand Dollar is often 80-100 ft. Because the Sand Dollar Condominiums has such great shore dives they advertise that you can go back over and over with “zero charge for your shore dives”. The rooms at the Sand Dollar were pleasant and the folks who are there to Northeast & Midwest Dive News MARCH 2011

make sure you have everything you need are attentive and on top of their A game. The next place I stayed were the Den Laman Condominiums located on the waterfront two miles north of main town, Kralendijk. This property offered all the comforts a visiting diver could ask for. Fully air-conditioned apartments decorated with European flair offered fully equipped kitchens as well as a dining area and a living area with LCD-TV and surround sound system. Not a bad place to put your feet up after a day of diving. I also stayed at Divi Resorts. I always have a great time at a Divi Resort and there are seven of them in the ABC islands. I stayed at the Flamingo and rooms were nice. This property was an older resort and has recently been remodeled; they did a grand job. Located along the west coast of Bonaire just steps from the capital city of Kralendijk this resort is a 10 minute walk into downtown as well as a 20 minute walk in the other direction to some wonderful local shore dives. There were quite a few very interesting amenities on Bonaire but perhaps the most intriguing for me was the Buddy Dive drive thru air fill station. You simply put your tanks in back of your vehicle, pull into the air station; they pull them out and fill them. You don’t have to tank your tanks into anything and you in and out with even more

time to dive. I loved it! Bonaire is very serious about their environmental causes. There are a lot of green campaigns throughout the island. For instance, waste reduction campaigns encourage visitors to take home their used batteries instead of disposing of them in Bonaire’s landfill. Resorts and restaurants are encouraging reusable water bottles filled with Bonaire’s reversed osmosis water and they no longer sell bottled water also reducing the load on the landfill. In the way of clean energy Bonaire is taking an active role in developing wind turbine energy. The DutchGerman consortium EcoPower Bonaire BV announced the signing of a contract with
the Water and Energy Company of Bonaire to build and operate a sophisticated new sustainable wind-diesel power plant. The power plant will supply the island with 10 megawatts of wind capacity supplemented by 13 megawatts of (bio)diesel power. Being eco-friendly is an important part of the Bonaire culture and they are making tremendous strides in ensuing that they are doing everything they can to be good stewards of the environment. The island is easy to get around. There is only one road that wraps all the way around the island so if you keep heading in one direction eventually you’ll find your way back to where you began. that you get a vehicle. The island is not huge but you still need a vehicle to get around. I normally don’t offer specific travel advice but I will suggest this, consider using an agency to book your trip. If you do so they take care of it all including the vehicle. For me this takes the worry out of the trip and I can just enjoy myself. I was given a tour by the Tourism department which was fun and interesting. I would suggest that you build at least one day into your trip to see the above the water sites however I can’t say enough about the diving. The Marine Park is approximately 2700 hectares and extends all the way around Bonaire. The reefs are incredibly well preserved, offer an amazingly diverse marine community and it is said that Bonaire’s fish population is the most diverse in the Caribbean and ranks among the best in the world. Needless to say you won’t run out of things to explore here. So if you are looking for a place where the accommodations are friendly, affordable and comfortable while the diving is exciting, fun and adventurous, Bonaire and the ABC Islands are where you may want to hang your tanks. I had a great time and already have plans to head back as soon as I can. Trust me, once you’ve spent some time in Bonaire it won’t just become a memory but instead will be one of your regular stops. ■

n the 17th Century exploring Spaniards landed on Bonaire and with them they brought donkeys to help with the hard labor of taming the local environment. What resulted from the donkey implant was the development of a new local resident…Bonaire donkeys. Donkeys have now been living on Bonaire for hundreds of years and while most of the residents appreciate these hard working animals, there were some that instead chose to abuse them so in 1993 Dutch Nationals, Marina Melis and her husband Ed Koopman, established a donkey sanctuary on Bonaire for sick, wounded and orphaned donkeys. The Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire just south of Kralendijk, now offers a sheltered, protected life to all the donkeys of Bonaire. Dive News Network publisher Rick Stratton who recently visited Bonaire really appreciated the work that Melis and Koopman are doing. “I think it is really cool that the people of Bonaire are caring for all their residents,” Stratton says. “The work that these folks are doing for the donkeys is a good example of what we all should be doing throughout the work…caring for all of the planets’ residents.” Currently there are more than 400 donkeys living in Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire and they are provided with food, drinking water and medical care and have plenty of room and freedom. The Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire is a small, registered non-profit organization that is entirely dependent upon gifts, donations and the work of volunteers, so they are always looking for help. The Scap
The Scap is a cap for cool scuba dive cats that on a glance looks like a bandana, but when you touch it, you realize that the Scap is something functional besides looking fashionable. It’s made of 1.5mm neoprene. Like any other bandana, it keeps your hair from getting tangled on a dive or if you are like me, it protects your head from the sun’s rays while above and below water. The Scap also reduces heat lost from your head. Little soft rubbery bumps help keep the Scap in place throughout a dive. NASE-FUN, THROUGH responsible and real-scuba instructing done right
D
ivers want to dive. They have to learn but when it is all said and done the diver will ask himself one question and one question only…did I have fun? The National Academy of Scuba Educators (NASE) worldwide not only want to help divers learn to dive but they also want to help them answer that all important question with a resounding yes!. Founded in 1982 in Lubbock, Texas, NASE focuses on what they consider to be the obvious approach to training divers. Their philosophy began with four basic principles and today, they continue to hone their methods to develop the best way to train divers. Executive Director Scott Evans says that the four principles are the key elements to how NASE works. “Our training organization is dedicated to providing state of the art technology, up-to-date educational materials and the best support to scuba professionals around the world,” Evans says. “Our philosophy is based on first, making it fun because that’s really why divers sign up. Our focus is on discovering how to have fun underwater while learning to dive safely. Second, making the training through; NASE’s competency based approach to diver training does not dictate what the instructor will cover or how many sessions it will supposedly take before a student has “learned.” Instead, our student-centered approach to diver training specifies what, when and how well students will be able to perform realworld diving skills in order to be certified. Third, making it real; diver training should be based on the way the world’s best divers actually dive — not on how a group of self-

NASE helps make sure this example will do everything possible to create safe and environmentally responsible divers.” Evans adds that the NASE motto is to, “fundamentally change the way the world learns to dive” by providing innovative training materials and methods. He says that NASE has an instructor base throughout the world to support of their mission. “We just released on new eLearning Open Water Diver course and focused on redeveloping the rest of our materials in that same format. Our materials must be top-notch and have ability to delivered through a variety of platforms.” Evans says that developing a training system that will provide comprehensive way to teach all levels of diving. Competency based allows instructor to have freedom to teach and provide a client-centered course. “Our blended learning (each course will have a portion online and a printed manual) allows instructors to choose which option best suits their clients. We are well aware that there are still quite a few people out there who want that book in their hands. For this reason we will print our materials in small runs so that we can always update them quickly always offering the most current material. In the end this is all about offering state of the art training that leads divers to the real reason they wanted to dive in the first place…to have a great time.
