ENID HS The Quill | ENID, OK IMPACT ON IMPACT Generous laser cuts make the Glitter UV-coated endsheet shine. Silver sparkles over the water droplets of the fountain is a great effect, adding movement and shine that peeks through the cover. “Out of the Blue” is a double reference to the year and to Enid’s school colors.

BLANCHARD HS The Lion | BLANCHARD, OK POWER PERSPECTIVEOF Laser cuts don t have to be perfectly straight. The Blanchard staff chose a bumpy angular slash to pull off a ripped-paper effect. The matte look of the begscreatewith(whichrepeatedfrontmetallicoutsideSuede-laminatedcontrastswithgoldinkontheendsheetandthethemewordalignsnicelythefrontlid)toacoverthattobeopened.

THOMAS A. EDISON HS The Talon | ALEXANDRIA, VA SHOW YOUR SCHOOL Two cuts are better than one for Edison. With cutouts of the theme statement and for the windows in an architectural graphic of the school building, the staff went intricate with its lasercut cover. The endsheet behind is sturdy, creamy white paper, which shows through the cuts without adding any clutter to the clean look.

OLATHE NORTHWEST HS Evermore | OLATHE, KS UNFOLD PERFECTTHELOOK Blue is for blueprints, and it’s their school color. A careful plan with extra time is required for this type of cover, but the payoff is so worth it. The magnetsstructurewrap-aroundincludestokeepthe flap in place. Inside, readers find information that would typically be found on the title page and a brief table of contents. The Tiger | CANTON, OK MAKE IT SHINE Making 100 years extra special, this staff chose a schoolspirited book with all the Startingtrimmings.witha matte black, grained cover material, then adding two colors of foil on front, back and spine, and finally, including a laser-cut and foil-edged “C,” the school produced an impressive volume buyers will treasure for years to come. The endsheets feature historic black-andwhite photos dating back to the 1960s, including the original school building, which is positioned under the laser Throwbackcut. photos and mods are throughoutsprinkledthebook.

TACTILE TOUCHES Everyone loves a little texture on a yearbook cover. In this case, the Rex Putnam High School staff chose a Brush grain on their full-color litho cover with Gloss UV to make the theme statement pop. The three colors and transparency applied to the fonts add dimension as Thewell.grain provides a tactile aspect to the entire cover, but skips the areas where the Gloss UV appears. It’s an easy and effective way to level-up your cover design.

TEXAS Literally and figuratively, the Texas High staff set out to wrap up the 2021 school year. (And maybe put it behind them.) Even without the belly band, the willandwordsFlippingthemebeletsbrightsgreeninside,dynamic,themulti-colorembossedgradientoncoverhintsatthecolorfulpagesbutthemutedcontrastingtheofthebellybandusknowtherewillalotoflayerstothisandthecoverage.totheback,thereversedirectionyouknowthisbookbeapage-turner.

The staff chose many details to make the book feel a little bit throwback — and a little modern. The cover is full-color printing on Frost Linen with Gold foil on the front and spine and includes the horse photo to represent their Charger mascot and schoolcolor purple. Fonts were chosen specifically to represent their previous yearbooks, and the dividers are black and white with a silhouetted full-color layer for the main subject, mixing the idea of old and new.

It’s a golden opportunity. What better way to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary than with gold-gilded page edges?

XAVIER PREPARATORYCOLLEGE Xav ierian | PHOENIX, AZ WRAPPED IN LUXURY Adding allure to their cover, the Xavierian staff chose to wrap their book in a translucent vellum dust jacket printed with white ink. The abstract leaves printed on the vellum hint at the theme Bloom Within which is supported by the pastel watercolor graphic printed in full-color and coated with Suede lamination. Spectrum foil on the word “within” adds an extra touch to this elegant cover.

IT EVERYTHINGMATCHES When your theme is “Black Out,” it makes sense to design a cover that’s black — with more black. The minimalist cover with its simple debossed and embossed theme statement, and a hit of Gloss UV, gets an extra boost from the black page edges. Combined with a printed metallic silver endsheet, the package is complete.

WELLINGTON HS Precedent | WELLINGTON, FL THE SKY’S LIMITLESS A droplet pattern of Silver Glitter UV makes the starry sky twinkle on this litho cover. Front and back endsheets get the same treatment over full-bleed black. It’s such a cool effect accomplished easily with assistance from an HJ cover artist. Here, the school purchased a stock thegradientpalettecanTheUVpatternconvertedillustration,photo/graphicandtheartistagraphictoalayerforthecoating.eyedroppertoolhelpfindthecolorwithinthepresentedbyphoto/graphic.

PEMBROKE PINES CHARTER HS Prowler | PEMBROKE PINES, FL WHO IS “WE?”

THE BIG 5 0 Making 50 special, the Aeneid staff created a gold and white quarterbound volume, making use of a standard white cover material and contrasting with a Metallic Brushed Gold material. Gold foil on the front lid makes the theme font, school crest and 50 shine. Touches of black silkscreen ink on the crest and accent font add more contrast. And, a gold ribbon bookmark adds an extra special touch.

Thermo UV hides faces that make up the “WE” of Pembroke Pines Charter High School on this inventive cover. A gradient of the school’s maroon color contrasts white embossed lettering on the front, and a version of the cover art debossed in black on the back makes the theme clear. Black lettering on the front and back endsheets has a hit of Gloss UV as well.

CYPRESS BAY HS The Storm | WESTON, FL SHINE AND GLOW With Silver Glitter UV on the stars at the top, Photochromic UV adds a special touch to the stars that are barely visible at the bottom. When this book hits the sunlight, the theme type and surrounding stars turn gold. This special effect let the school know that this particular book is “Like Never Before Debossing the theme completes it.

BISHOP CATHOLICMOOREHS Moore Memories | ORLANDO, FL COLOR EVERYTHINGCHANGES “Living” transforms on this cover the moment you expose it to the sun, thanks to Photochromic UV. It’s almost like the book comes to life. The embossed elements and Gloss UV over the color bars add to this impressive package.

FARRAGUT HS The Admiral | KNOXVILLE, TN WHO DOESN’T LOVE A REVEAL? Hidden underneath a glossy black coating, The Admiral staff placed a variety of photos to match their theme — Thermo UV coating reveals the photos with heat and friction. (You rub the cover with your hand to make the photos “appear ) This book also features silver gilded edges. On the back lid, a semi-hidden photo collage is similar to the effect created on the front lid.

It’s tradition. Seniors at Ridgewood High are treated to a special cover, and it always includes this metallay impression of their school. differentstudents(Underclassreceiveabook.)

CENTENNIAL HS The Claw | FRANKLIN, TN TRY NOT TO TILT IT We love this lenticular. When tilted, the cover reads, “Try Not to Hear Us” and the masked faces switch to unmasked faces. Just like the theme, you ca n t not read the cover — or not get the connections to the 2021 experience once you did. The theme copy explains how everyone at the school had to raise their voices to be heard (especially while wearing masks) and refuse to be silenced. From hosting their own prom to andsupporthomecoming, reworkingthestoriesthethemetimetimeagain.

The theme is revealed on the endsheets and in the opening. The interesting thing about this approach is that using the same die year after year means they don’t have to order or pay for a new one. And, of course, it’s something the seniors look forward to.

Adding a chenille letter to the cover of any yearbook means the book will shout school spirit. Chosen just for that reason, the Jabberwokk staff wanted every reader to know that spirit was the one certain thing in the 2021 school year. Other features of this cover are the debossed letter “D” made to house the tipped-on letter; special-order Sleet foil for the theme, front lid and spine copy; and a litho-printed, purpleand-black pattern, which adds depth to the cover.

CHAMINADE PREPARATORYCOLLEGESCHOOL Cardinal | SAINT LOUIS, MO FOIL FOR THE WIN Even with the mask graphic silkscreened over the maroon cover material, the traditional school crest in Gold foil stands out beyond the theme. The old-plusnew combo leads into the opening copy, which calls out the school’s ability to adapt and overcome in order to make the year as normal as elements.aroundEnglishrubembossing,Thepossible.coverincludesovertoneonthefoilandLinengraintheprinted

FELIX VARELA SENIOR HS Crotalus | MIAMI, FL MAKE A NOTE OF IT Linen cover material over plexiglass takes on a rippedpage look, as the endsheet is printed to look like aged parchment. Together with the Gold foil and cream silkscreen ink on the spine, it takes on the look of a classic keepsake. The staff’s “288-page love letter” to the school, themed “Dear Varela,” also features Gold foil on the front endsheet and picks up the “torn-page graphic” for use throughout.

DUBLIN HS Gaela Mor | DUBLIN, CA WINDOW WONDER

The plexiglass of this cover construction creates a window revealing the second half of the theme statement “Exactly Like Nothing Else Gloss UV over boxes and outlines adds shine and texture to the Anti-Scuff Matte litho cover

WHARTON HS The Felidae | TAMPA, FL SEVEN STORIESSPECIAL Tip-ins are one way to shine a light on an element of coverage unique to your school or year. In Wharton’s case, with the theme “You Know Our Name But Not Our Story,” the tip-in section inserted after page 48 holds seven profiles they wanted to emphasize. Those stories were labeled as “no longer untold.” Larger-thannormal photos and special-order, cream paper make this special section sing. Keeping the size to the full page height but trimming the width short makes it tuck neatly within the book.

BASHA HS Grizzly Gamut | CHANDLER, AZ THE ONE WITH THE LASER CUT Going all in with a Friends theme, the laser-cut front endsheet adds an extra bit of pizzazz and commitment to reflect the look of the iconic sitcom. Under the frame cutout, the title page reveals all of the essential information as well as a repeat of the theme, “We’ll Be There For You ” The cover includes a mixture of Friends oriented icons as well as icons representing milestones important to the school.

EAST LIMESTONE HS Warpath | ATHENS, AL LAYERED COVERAGE

The Breakfast Club, and the drawing overlapping the photo underneath helps to add to the vibe. Doodles continue on dividers, and a handwriting font used as an accent helps carry the look through the book.

First, the cover sports Blue foil, and then the front endsheet picks up the Band of Brothers” theme in Gold foil. Not only does this approach add more real estate for student faces and voices — in this case, 21 additional photos — but it’s fun! In many schools, a homecoming or spirit week gatefold tip-in is traditional, and this is a new twist on that idea.
