EXPO ANALYSIS India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2018 concluded successfully recently in New Delhi with its’ theme of “New Digital Horizons – Connect. Create. Innovate.” IMC has been as a regular platform for global and local stakeholders in the sector to collaborate in the cause of exploring opportunities and leveraging possibilities, with specific focus on South and SouthEast Asia. Addressing members of the press and media on the last day of IMC 2018, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Communications, Shri Manoj Sinha said – “Having participated in the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona earlier this year, I can assure you that IMC 2018 was no less – in terms of substance, scale, and style. The IMC is just a two-year old baby, and it has already acquired a personality of its’ own. It will now be an important annual event on everyone’s calendar.” The mega 3-day event was inaugurated on October 25 by Shri Manoj Sinha, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Communications, in the august presence of Shri Suresh Prabhu, Minister for Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation; Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister for Electronics & Information Technology and Law & Justice, and Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Housing & Urban Affairs. Also gracing the inaugural function were captains of the telecom industry – Shri Mukesh Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Industries; Shri Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman, Aditya Birla Group; and Shri Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman, Bharti Enterprises. The IMC 2018 conference and exhibition was held over a total area of more than 50,000 square-metres, with more than 5,000 delegates in attendance. Delegations from 20 countries participated in the event, which saw more than 300 companies showcasing their latest and best technologies, products, services, and applications. According to the organisers, more than 50,000 curious visitors attended the various sessions and viewed the futuristic solutions on display at the exhibition stalls. An extremely relevant addition at this edition of the IMC was the presence of high-level ministerial delegations from several BIMSTEC and ASEAN countries. Hon’ble Ministers from the European Commission, Cambodia, Myanmar, Nepal, and Lao PDR led their respective delegations, and participated in plenary sessions which were focused on the specific needs, challenges, and opportunities applicable to member countries of these regional forums. The presence of the high-level delegations also offered them an opportunity for bilateral meetings with their Indian counterparts, where topics of mutual interest were discussed, and possibilities of strengthening cooperation were explored. The exhibition stalls covered a variety of interesting possibilities, hinged around 5G, Internet of Things, Augmented and Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Smart City Solutions, Fintech, Health-Tech, Autonomous Cars, and Cyber Security, amongst others.

An interesting feature of this edition of the IMC was the focused attention on the critical Start-ups ecosystem. More than 200 start-ups marked their presence at the event, with their booths displaying ideas and innovations which seek to leverage the potential of digital communications to create and meet ever-changing consumer needs – in areas such as artificial intelligence, integrated services, healthcare, pharma, security, safety, food, sports, social networking, travel, education, and disaster management, among others. As Shri Manoj Sinha, while inaugurating the simultaneous release of 250 startup applications at the IMC 2018 today, said – “The sheer volume and quality of what I see here is amazing. Who knows, we may right now be releasing the WhatsApp and Google Maps of tomorrow!”

The event was also noteworthy for some very remarkable announcements which clearly established the direction of the Indian digital communications industry over the next several years. The Government of India announced the commitment of the industry to rollout One Million WiFi Hotspots in the Country by December 2019. The National Frequency Allocation Plan (NFAP) 2018 was also unveiled at the event. NFAP 2018 frees up a total of 605 MHz spectrum in the 5-GHz band for Wi-Fi services. Several spectrum bands for Short Range Devices and Ultra WideBand Devices have been made license exempt, benefitting the public as well as industry. As Smt. Aruna Sundararajan, Secretary (Telecom) and Chairman, Telecom Commission, Government of India said – “These initiatives provide an excellent launchpad for achieving the goals such as Broadband for All, which are outlined in our recently released National Digital Communications Policy (NDCP) 2018.” In his concluding remarks, the Minister added – “Our Government, under the leadership of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, remains committed to make the digital communications sector a core part of our national infrastructure. The initiatives and reforms we have announced here will provide a strong boost to employment generation and digital economic activity – especially in the rural and semi-rural areas of the country. We are determined to succeed in our endeavours, in partnership with industry, academia, regulators, and startups.” Shri Sinha thanked the Department of Telecommunications and the Cellular Operators Association of India for designing and successfully organising a best-in-class event. Seagate Technology Reports Fiscal Q1 2019 Financial Results

Oracle Rolls Out AI Updates in Its ERP Cloud and EPM Cloud

Seagate Technology reported financial results for the quarter ended September 28, 2018. “In the September quarter, we achieved strong financial results in revenue, profitability and cash flow, reflecting solid execution and positive demand for our products across multiple markets. By delivering competitive cost-effective mass storage solutions, Seagate is a crucial supplier in supporting the Data Age digital transformations that are happening across the storage marketplace. We believe our deep storage industry expertise, leading technology portfolio and focused execution will continue to drive long-term success for the company and deliver value to our shareholders,” said Dave Mosley, Seagate’s chief executive officer. In the first quarter, the Company generated $587 million in cash flow from operations and $410 million in free cash flow, paid cash dividends of $181 million and repurchased 3 million ordinary shares for $150 million. Cash and cash equivalents totalled $1.9 billion at the end of the quarter.

Acer Announces its Financial Results for Q3 2018 Acer Inc. announced its financial results for Q3 2018: consolidated revenues were NT$65.33 billion, growing 7.8% year-on-year; gross profits were NT$6.89 billion with 10.6% margin; operating income was NT$1.17 billion, marking the highest for the third quarter over eight years, with 1.8% margin; earnings before tax were NT$1.19 billion; net income was NT$912 million; and earnings per share (EPS) were NT$0.3. DT: How has been ECS overall performance this year across Indian market? Mr. Bhatt: As we have seen $ getting appreciated recently resulting into bit of slowdown of market, adding to that low availability of CPUs in part of Q3 & major part of Q4 (likely). Fortunately we could anticipate the same in advance & planned our strategy accordingly. We have been able to achieve our internal growth plan using suitable products or targeting specific segment. DT: Please brief about the major collaborations & programs you have concluded so far with your channel partners. What is your future roadmap for promotion activities? Mr. Bhatt: During the year we did a successful channel scheme called “Fly to Computex with LIVA” which was welcomed by all concerns & we plan to further enhance such program in future. We also did few B2B Enterprise & SME event which was not possible without the support of concern channel partner, the theme of this event was “Empowering your Business” where we discuss about their pain area or things they look when considering buying Computing Device. DT: What are your online & offline channel strategies to reach to wider customer base? How do you work with your channel partners to increase revenue and presence?

The agreement was signed in the presence of the IT Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Mr. N. Lokesh. (Son of Mr. Chandraprabhu Naidu). The Collaboration emphasizes the importance of Design in the Tech Industry. Within the framework of this collaboration, Astrum and LKK Designs will delve into joint working projects to promote design and are going to share their know-how on Technology. LKKER Design shall support Astrum on the relevant Technology and Quality standards to develop Design Innovative Technology Initiatives. Astrum with an investment of Rs.100 Cr will set up a manufacturing plant at Tirupathi. Astrum shall extend its portfolio to audio devices, LED lights, accessories for mobile, computer components, gaming controllers. With this venture, near about 1000 new job opportunities will be created.

Sify Technologies Names Arun Seth as Independent Director

TAIT Announces its new Board of Directors for 2018-19 Trade Association of Information Technology (TAIT) recently announced the Board of Directors that will now lead the association to achieve newer goals sand targets. Sify Technologies Limited announced the appointment of Mr. Arun Seth as Independent Director and Member, Audit Committee based on the recommendations of the Nomination and Remuneration Committee of the Board. The appointment was effected on October 22, 2018 and is subject to the approval of shareholders. With his appointment, Sify is now fully compliant with the NASDAQ Listing Rule 5605 on the number of Independent Directors on the Board and Audit Committee. He currently serves as an Independent Director on the board of Jubilant Foodworks (Dominos), Narayana Health, Centum Learning (a Bharti Group co), Usha Breco Ltd, Serviont Global Solutions Ltd and Hunger Inc. Indian Organizations Continue to Be in Early Stages of Cloud Maturity: IDC IDC India’s latest study titled IDC Maturity Scape Benchmark: Cloud in India, 2018(Doc # AP44348118) suggests that more than 93% of the India organizations are still in the early stages of maturity, which in IDC MaturityScape’s model are referred to as ad hoc and opportunistic stages. Compared to the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) markets, with more than 14% of the organizations in the latter stages of maturity (repeatable, managed, and optimized), Indian organizations in the latter stages are lesser (10%). While improving IT security and increasing business agility remain among the top expected benefits of cloud by Indian enterprises, the challenges related to costs and complexities with infrastructure cannot be ignored. To be able to derive maximum business value from their investments in cloud, awareness around potential benefits and challenges is a must.

MSI Honored with CES 2019 Innovation Awards for Its Gaming Products MSI announced that it has been named a CES® 2019 Innovation Awards Honoree for 12 innovative gaming products. Zoho Announces the Winner of Its App Building Contest with FAQ Bot

Zoho organised the final round for CliqTrix, an app-building contest for Zoho’s business communication software-Cliq, at its Estancia Campus in Chennai. College students from all across the country had participated in the competition. Over a period of three months, they built applications on Cliq’s platform using Deluge, Zoho’s own online scripting language. They were provided on-campus and online training by the ZohoCliq team. The winning extension, FAQ Bot - a knowledge exchange system was developed by Mr. Pradeep Kumar and Manoj Sabareesh. M, final year students from National Engineering College, Kovilpatti. The objective behind this bot is to provide a knowledge manager for the team. The bot is entirely built on the ZohoCliq platform and powered by Cliq’s platform storage. “CliqTrix is an opportunity for students to have a hands-on experience of developing applications on a cloud software platform,” said Mani Vembu, COO, Zoho Corp. “While still in college, they can get exposure to software that power successful enterprises.”

India to Rank 12th Worldwide When it Comes to Dangers on Web According to a recent report by Kaspersky Lab, India is ranked 12th world wide for when it comes to the dangers associated with surfing the web. Q3 in India saw that 32.8% of users were attacked by web-borne threats between July- September 2018. Kaspersky Lab products detected 48,093,743 Internet-borne malware incidents on the computers of KSN participants in India. Infection in this type of attack takes place when visiting an infected website, without any intervention from the user and without their knowledge. And this is the number one method utilized by cybercriminals, the one used in the majority of attacks. Protection against such attacks requires an Internet Security class solution capable of detecting threats as they are being downloaded from the Internet and the timely installation of all the latest updates for the browser and its plugins.
