Samsung’s Smartphone Sales Declined 14% in the Q3 2018 In the third quarter of 2018, Samsung experienced its biggest decline since Gartner has been tracking smartphone sales globally. Samsung’s Galaxy S9, S9+ and Note 9 struggled to revive demand in 2018, and its revamped midtier and entry-tier smartphones continued to face huge competition from top Chinese brands who grew market share in key markets, such as India. In the third quarter of 2018, Chinese brands Huawei and Xiaomi, helped drive global smartphone sales, according to Gartner, Inc. Overall, sales of smartphones to end users grew 1.4 percent in the third quarter of 2018 to reach 389 million units. “If we had taken both Huawei and Xiaomi out of the global smartphone vendors list, smartphone sales to end users would have declined by 5.2 percent,” said Anshul Gupta, research director at Gartner. “Led by low-price smartphones, enhanced camera features and high-quality resolution displays, top Chinese mobile phone manufacturers boosted their sales across emerging markets in the third quarter of 2018.” While sales of smartphones are slowing down for most mobile phone manufacturers, Huawei saw demand for its smartphones grow by 43 percent in the third quarter of 2018 (see Table 1). Huawei remains the No.1 smartphone brand in Greater China and in the top 3 among many European markets. “The gap between Samsung and Huawei continues to shrink, as Huawei expands aggressively by investing in branding and distribution in the emerging markets of the Middle East, Asia/Pacific and Africa,” said Mr. Gupta. “Huawei is, for example, aggressively positioning its affordable Honor series smartphones to drive the shift from feature phones to smartphones in those markets.” In the third quarter of 2018, Samsung experienced its biggest decline since Gartner has been tracking smartphone sales globally. Samsung’s smartphone sales declined 14 percent in the third quarter. Samsung’s Galaxy

S9, S9+ and Note 9 struggled to revive demand in 2018, and its revamped midtier and entrytier smartphones continued to face huge competition from top Chinese brands who grew market share in key markets, such as India, and their expansion into regions beyond Asia/Pacific continues to take away opportunities from Samsung. Apple’s performance was flat in the third quarter of 2018 (0.7 percent growth). “Apple’s iPhones are facing a saturated premium smartphone market, with slowing growth rates and increased competition in China,” said Mr. Gupta. “Apple’s new flagship smartphones, announced in September, will be key to defining Apple’s overall iPhone unit sales in 2018. Initial channel checks suggest that the Xs Max is outselling the Xs model, and we also see the Xs Max as a critical addition for the Chinese market where Apple has been losing share.”

THE FUTURE: 5G AND FOLDABLE SMARTPHONES With global smartphone sales decelerating significantly, the attention of mobile phone manufacturers is moving to new technologies like 5G and foldable form factor to differentiate

the user experience on smartphones and generate new user value.

“While 2019 will mark an important year for more R&D and testing/trials of varying 5G technologies, it is unlikely that 5G will be seen in mobile devices in significant volumes before 2020,” said Roberta Cozza, research director at Gartner. “We expect 5G mobile phone sales to total 65 million units in 2020.” In addition, several vendors, such as Samsung, Huawei and LG, are expected to launch new foldable form factors in 2019. “Beyond the initial interest these devices will be expensive and with usability trade-offs initially,” said Ms. Cozza. “It will take time for vendors to build a strong ecosystem of software, and to get developers on board to generate attractive and innovative user experiences around foldable smartphones.”

“OUR MARKET FOCUS FOR THE 2019 WILL BE AROUND EXPANDING BUSINESS IN US”

INTERVIEW

Today businesses are very focused about having best-in-class technology solutions to boost their growth. Attaining maximum growth is the need of today’s market landscape. Technology is being proven as a biggest helping hand to achieve such goals. Technology is evolving very rapidly and daily we see new innovations taking place globally. Maveric Systems is helping market players in operating their businesses seamlessly with innovative solutions. To know more about how technology is helping businesses to grow, read below the recent interaction with Ranga Reddy, CEO and Co-founder, Maveric Systems.

RANGA REDDY, CEO AND CO-FOUNDER, MAVERIC SYSTEMS.

DT: WHAT WILL BE THE MAJOR TRENDS IN INDIA FOR TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION OR DEVELOPMENT IN BANKING SECTOR? Mr. Reddy: The coming year would witness significant traction in Banks warming to technology led financial firms in payment, NBFC and micro finance and the techfins in the areas of customer on-boarding through digital means, digital payments, credit decisioning and segment aggregators for SME and personal lending. While this would be on the business side, there would be a substantial scale-up in RPA investment in reducing operations cost in both retail and commercial banking. The quality of these executions will determine the front liners in the years ahead. Behemoths need to watch out and move faster if they were to retain their place. Fintech Innovation funds by these banks should emerge too either to invest or acquire desirable start-ups in one of the above-named areas. DT: HOW HAS BEEN THE YEAR 2018 SO FAR FOR YOU? Mr. Reddy: In 2017-18, Maveric Systems successfully transitioned from being a singlefocus company with an assurance-only model to one that is technology-driven with specialised competencies in cloud, data & analytics, API and microservices, and driven towards enabling clients’ customer-centric tech adoption initiatives. The revenue for FY 2017-

18 stood at 210 crores and 24% of our revenue comes from data and customer experiencerelated digital services (75 crores). We have been experiencing a growth of 30 crores per month from existing customers. In 2018 we have seen delivery units being strengthened to create opportunities for consultative delivery with regards to step-changes and continuous improvement with existing clients. We established a Digital Delivery Centre in Singapore to enhance delivery impact of the company’s digital, data and core banking competencies in the region. In the first 6 months of 2018, we added 5 new logos to our repertoire. Also, Substantive investments were made in strengthening leadership across business lines in Digital, Data, and T24. Our challenges too have been along the same lines of upskilling and getting new talent in scale across the new technology areas. DT: WHAT IS YOUR OVERALL ROADMAP TO ESCALATE YOUR GROWTH FURTHER IN CY 2019? ON WHAT PRODUCTS/SOLUTIONS YOU WILL BE FOCUSING IN 2019? WHAT ALL INVESTMENT YOU HAVE PLANNED TO BOOST THE SUPPORT ACROSS ALL REGION? Mr. Reddy: Our commitment to scale operations through deeper customer engagement and sharpening focus remain unchanged. Our market focus for the 2019 will be around expanding business in US, specifically Dallas and New York, Singapore, and Dubai. Rather

than a general market focused expansion, we are driving it based on a decided prospect list. We are also working towards geographical expansion in terms of talent, with our efforts concentrated towards establishment of a delivery base in Warsaw, Poland. DT: HOW DO YOU ASSURE YOUR BUSINESS PARTNER BEST AFTER SALE SUPPORT? Mr. Reddy: Maveric subscribes to a customer intimacy model wherein we are committed to multi-level engagement with chosen clients led by insight and impact. Our guiding principles are: •

Client-focused delivery organization for our priority and key customers

Collaborate with customer through insight-led engagements and contextualized solutions that not only address their current needs, but also future needs

Develop and equip ourselves in line with these needs, and even make investments accordingly in technology and talent.

Create exceptional impact through proactive step changes (differentiated change in delivery that drive value as well as induce a culture of innovation along every step of the way)

HP RETAINS LEADERSHIP POSITION IN OVER ALL PRINTER MARKET IN INDIA Government’s strict regulation on the Refurbished Copier market through tight monitoring and increased seizing of illegal units at major ports gave an impetus to the original Copier market. The refurbished market has always been an eyesore for original copier vendors and with its partial closure, they are getting ample opportunities to expand their customer base by targeting the users of these machines with attractive pricing schemes.

India HCP market posted quarterly shipments of approx. 1.1 million units in 2018Q3, a Quarter-on-Quarter growth of 25.6 percent, as per latest IDC Asia Pacific Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker, CY2018Q3. While there was a Year-On-Year decline of 1.7 percent, it can be primarily attributed to the strong demand for laser printers post GST implementation last year. Inkjet printer shipments grew by 5.5 percent Year-On-Year with a contribution of 55.3 percent to overall India HCP market, the highest ever recorded. Growth in inkjet printer shipments was led by Ink tank printers which recorded Year-On-Year growth of 12.9 percent. While the overall laser printer market declined Year-On-Year, due to the government’s efforts on enforcing restrictions on the refurbished copier market, the laser copier market registered a healthy Year-On-Year growth of 37.5 percent. “Shipments in 2018Q3 were driven primarily by the online channel segment in preparation for the sales events in the run up to the Diwali Festival. Unlike the previous years, 2018 was marked by the increased focus of e-commerce players on the Printer category. Having realized the success of mobile phone, accessories and the various white goods categories in previous such online events, both HCP and e-commerce players were fairly confident of replicating it with Printer category as well this year.” says Bani Johri, Market Analyst, IPDS, IDC India. Government’s strict regulation on the Refurbished Copier market through tight monitoring and increased seizing of illegal units at major ports gave an impetus to the original Copier market. The refurbished market has always been an eyesore for original copier vendors and with its partial closure, they are getting ample opportunities to expand their

customer base by targeting the users of these machines with attractive pricing schemes.

HP Inc. (Excluding Samsung) maintained its leadership in HCP with a market share of 39.4 percent and a 22.7 percent quarter on quarter growth. It increased its promotional activities by launching schemes for retailers centred around product display and visibility. In the inkjet segment HP retained its 2nd position with a share of 32.5 percent. On the Copier side, HP shipments grew by 25 percent quarter over quarter due to demand from the corporate and Government segment.

Canon recorded year on year growth of 24.5 percent and maintained its 3rd position in the HCP market with the help of its Inkjet and the Laser Copier segment. In the copier segment it maintained its leadership position with 28.4 percent unit market share. The Government’s stricter regulations on the RC market coupled with Canon’s increased focus on corporate segment helped to maintain its dominance in copier market. In the Inkjet market, Canon saw a strong year on year growth of 55.2 percent because of addition of new channel partners and change in channel strategy, which included attractive channel distribution and schemes, as well as strong push for online sales. Canon especially focussed on its Ink tank models through channel schemes.

IDC India Market Outlook: Epson remained at 2nd position in the overall HCP market by clocking 20.7 percent quarter on quarter growth and it also continued to hold its leadership in inkjet segment with a unit share of 40.2 percent and a 21.8 percent quarter on quarter growth. The growth is primarily attributed to Epson’s increased shipment to the online channel and LFR stores. The sales of a few top selling models picked up amidst the upcoming product portfolio refresh.

“Post festive season, market is expected to continue the year on year growth momentum in 2018Q4 owing to strong consumer and SMB demand. Ink tank printers will continue gaining traction and compensate for decline in shipments of laser printers. Government’s continuous efforts on crackdown of reconditioned copier market should also translate into strong demand for original laser copiers,” says Nishant Bansal, Research Manager, IPDS & PC, IDC India.

INDIAN DIY MARKET: GROWTH AND CHALLENGES FOR MARKET PLAYERS The Do-It-Yourself (DIY) market is a key market for growth of PC penetration in India. According to the current market scenario and some market reports, it will continue to grow in future as well. There are certain factors that are supporting this market growth in tier I & II market, people are now more aware of the technology and they modify their PC/Desktops with the help of different components.

“Do-It-Yourself in India has been more of a creative business. I would call it a skilled market where the businesses have matured in their understanding about computers and in fine tuning their actual performance, with a budget. Over the years, we see that the PC DIY concept is slowly catching the attention of the enthusiasts. They have evolved from the ageold culture and have more of a structured way of conducting businesses by using modern tools of promotions and customer acquisitions” said Vishal Parekh, Marketing Director, Kingston Technology & HyperX – India. He further added, “Be it due to the use of unbelievable colour schemes, the radical system designs or even budget-based builds, the assemblers or DIY’ers have seen a lot of

success in the recent past. We are seeing a move of this market towards higher customization and options according to their customer requirements. What is working for them, according to us, is the variety of PC components that brands like Kingston and HyperX are making available. Today, there is a lot of room to play with the specifications, case designs and price points to match the set budgets. Kingston has been supporting system integrators for finding the best price points with our products in India and helping them out with suggestions on best compatibility. We understand their need to outperform and provide customer delight and have been working with them for creating a win-win situation.”

“For ECS India DIY is of strategic importance. Though with recent dollar appreciation and shortage of some key component has hit the growth in last couple of months. DIY is only market which provides customized solution & any company looks at them for introducing newer technologies to the market. DIY market has evolved & offering newer technologies to end-client sooner & at affordable price.” says Rajshekhar Bhatt, Country Manager, ECS.

“The DIY market in India is facing some challenges in the recent years due to the proliferation of Smartphone, which are doing basic computing applications for most people. On the other hand, the higher end of the PC market (Gaming, productivity, and industrial application) is growing, so there is a lot of potential for future growth in India outside the entry level consumer PC” added Sunil Grewal, Director, GIGABYTE Technology (India) Pvt. Ltd. “As GIGABYTE we are ready for that challenge. Our portfolio offers strong solutions in professional verticals such as “Brix” (Mini PCs) that are applied in various professional applications mainly in corporate and government sector. revenue and presence. Today, brands need to support their channel partners by offering training programs to educate them about new technologies.

There are several challenges for DIY market in India as this market is still in the nascent stage. The market players are trying to capture the large market especially in the metro cities. Below is the excerpts of industry leaders about the major challenges exist in the market for DIY community.

“As you know, we are a strong lifestyle technology brand that believes in its channel network. We have a lot of knowledge sharing with our distribution and channel partners about vital information on the market and expected product or pricing trends. We have created a variety of support mechanisms for our partners to feel comfortable and focus on their core processes” added Vishal Parekh, Kingston Technology & HyperX – India. “Like ‘Kingston Celebrations’, one of our recent successful schemes, we motivate our partners to perform better and improve their share. Also, we offer various training programs aimed towards educating them about the new technologies – like 3D NAND used in SSDs, our latest innovations and existing products. Our product launch events, gaming community meets, media announcements are also playing pivotal role in educating the channel partners and industry stakeholders. At Kingston, we are also helping our channel partners to understanding the DIY market and process so that they can advise our customers to buy a perfect solution for their technical needs. We take relentless efforts in synergizing the eco-system between the component market, channel partners, system integrators and the gaming community. Furthermore, if the Channel Partner faces a problem with a product, he can either approach the distributors or our service centres.”

“The PC DIY market is booming in the metro cities with their ability to offer a complete package, customized as per the end user’s requirements. However, most players in this segment are still trying to get a grip beyond their regional boundaries into the tier 2 cities” added Vishal Parekh, Kingston Technology & HyperX – India. “We understand that this space needs a direction and help from brands to grow. To bridge this gap, we are consciously providing support for them to gain confidence in newer regions, in terms of understanding our products, certain degree of pricing and availability. We are also working towards creating demand for the DIY community existing in the tier 2 cities, by strengthening our distribution and channel partner services in that region. Ltd. commented, “Every challenge can become an opportunity. This year we have launched a number of SSD models, as well as memory (RAM), a gaming cabinet, several keyboards and mice, as well as SMPS. Our AORUS and GIGABYTE eco system now offers almost every PC component except the processor. We believe that way we are able to grow during times of challenge and beyond.” “We always educate our channel partners to up-sell with newer technologies & solution around this & we have been able to do so with our LIVA mini PC & SoC based Motherboards (means Processor on board)” stated Rajshekhar Bhatt, ECS.

Brand Support to Channel Partners

“We support our partners with lots of marketing and education on local level, in most parts of India. We also have a great service infrastructure with 6 service centers (hubs) in T1 cities as well as over 50 collection centers in T2 and some T3 cities, covering most of India and ensuring great quality of repair and fast turnaround times along with consumer satisfaction. Our channel partner as well as the end consumer can rest assured that in the unlikely event of a service case, we have them covered. That gives confidence and security, and benefits for mutual long term growth” said Sunil Grewal, GIGABYTE Technology (India) Pvt. Ltd. Rajshekhar Bhatt, ECS added “Demo program for new products, desired marketing tools, training program, end client education program (Empowering Your Business with LIVA & ECS) through right mind share of partners.”

“Drones: A Predominant Technological Innovation in Indian Construction

T

echnology plays a pivotal role in shaping Indian construction industry. One new-gen technology that is gaining interest in the construction industry is the usage of drones. It is poised to serve as an effective medium towards building smart cities in a cost-effective, faster and safer manner with optimum utilisation of skills and efforts. It is expected that in the next 10 years, the use of drones in construction will register a manifold growth and will play a leading role in futuristic buildings. According to a recent industry report, India is one of the fastest growing markets for UAVs and by 2021, the Indian UAV market is expected to reach USD 885.7 million. The usage of drones in the construction industry, has seen a 239% growth year-over-year globally, higher than any other commercial sector. In India too, the growth is set to increase manifold. In the present scenario, it is very crucial for India to realise the aerial revolution that can be brought about by the proper utilisation of drones which have emerged as a highly viable commercial tool globally. As a matter of fact, the most notable sector of economy being benefitted by drones is construction. There’s no denying on the fact that there is an unstoppable rise of commercial drones; a market set to be worth billions over the coming years. There are numerous safety and legal implications that one should be aware of, as well as the differences between the commercial and personal use of drones. Despite increasing adoption and regulation, there is still tremendous growth in the use of drones in construction. Drones can add significant value to a project throughout its lifecycle.

Authored by Mr. AV Antao, Chief Operating Officer, Synergy Property Development Services

Highly cost-effective in topographical surveys A drone carrying out standard survey and inspection activities is undoubtedly a significant cost-effective approach, as it removes the need for any kind of monetary or physical efforts put in for the surveys. As an example, for a typical topographic survey, the use of a drone can help to reduce costs by approximately 50%. Ensuring completion of projects The use of drones completely eradicates the need of shutting down active work sites for the concerns of maintaining and inspecting work like pipeline or flare stacks, which can be carried out safely under UAV supervision. Drones also monitor site activity and provide a comprehensive overview of the site through land surveying. Therefore, it is highly efficient in reducing the timeframe for the process of construction leading to a speedy delivery of the projects. Reducing risk and keeping people safe

The areas where drone technology will benefit the construction process: Improvised quality and thermal imaging The quality of the scans and aerial imagery provided by the cameras mounted on top of the drones are undeniably superior. Drones equipped with high-resolution thermal cameras serve as an excellent investigative tool for a host of building-specific applications and energy efficiency audits, including roof insulation inspection. They can also graphically depict energy inefficiencies and identify wet insulations in the roof or elsewhere by displaying temperature variations within the building. Drones integration with BIM Drones have proved themselves to be an asset for data-driven approach and thus can effectively undertake numerous tasks to aid the BIM (Building Information Modeling) workflow. Giving an aerial perspective in the creation of the initial BIM, drones also provide scalable point cloud scanning and photography at different stages of construction.

12 I

I DECEMBER 2018

Drones help in minimising the possibility of risk by being monitored to perform a task. The UAV technology thus helps in supporting the drive towards zero incidents onsite as it takes away some of the risks from the construction activities like the need for labourers to work at heights when inspecting assets like bridges. UAVs and drones are effective in conducting safer, faster and more accurate inspections instead of safety managers, who physically conduct the site walk-throughs to identify potential hazards. Compact and intelligent results Acute 3D software can dramatically enhance productivity by turning a simple series of digital photos taken with a smart camera. When these cameras are mounted on drones they give a 360-degree overview of the project into a 3D reality mesh model. The result is a compact, intelligent representation of the asset in its current operating context. This also eases out the task for engineers and designers allowing them to work on an up-to-date 3D model for their enhancement and maintenance plans. Drones are tools that will play a fundamental role in ensuring that the construction industry can deliver huge and complex projects with a better finishing and on-time results.

Segment Highlights Consumer PC market recorded an overall shipment of 1.45 million units in 2018Q3, which is a 33.9 percent increase over last quarter. India PC market forecast: “While the excitement at the premium end of the market will remain and expected to grow further, IDC expects overall India PC market to decline due to Intel chip shortages and also on account of post Diwali slowdown of the market. After careful evaluation, Western Digital selected Oracle ERP Cloud, which has allowed it to seamlessly extend its onpremises applications to the cloud and establish a modern business platform that can seamlessly scale to support its future expansion plans and new technology innovations.

The Trade Association of Information Technology (TAIT) recently hosted an insightful panel discussion as part of their ‘Market Adda’ initiative. The event brought together industry veterans from across the IT Ecosystem, to discuss and share insights on how IT retailers and traders can survive the competitive online marketplace and evolve their business. Held at the Avion Hotel, Vile Parle, the event was a major success, with members passionately participating in Q&A’s and engaging with speakers post the event. Sophos Announces Lateral Movement Protection to XG Firewall to Stop Advancing Cyberattacks Sophos announced that its next-generation Sophos XG Firewall now includes lateral movement protection to prevent targeted, manual cyberattacks or exploits from infiltrating further into a compromised network. The SophosLabs 2019 Threat Report discusses a rise in targeted ransomware. With the SamSam ransomware campaign estimated to have earned more than $6.5 million, it is not surprising that criminals are attracted to this method. In these attacks, cybercriminals target weak entry points and brute-force Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) passwords. Once in, they move laterally, working one step at a time to steal domain admin credentials, manipulate internal controls, disable back-ups and more. By the time most IT managers notice what’s happening, the damage is done. “Many organizations are set up to protect against automatic bots, but not interactive, human-driven attacks. If active adversaries get into a system they can ‘think laterally’ to troubleshoot roadblocks, evade detection and move around. It’s hard to stop them unless the right security measures are in place,” said Dan Schiappa, senior vice president and general manager of products at Sophos. “Most lateral movements happen on the endpoint, which is why synchronizing security is important. Attackers will attempt to advance using non-malware techniques, such as exploits, Mimikatz and privilege escalation. The network needs to know to respond and automatically shut down or isolate infected machines before anyone or anything spreads further.”
